After a hundred years, psychical research (and experimental parapsychology) are still regarded as pseudosciences. Despite sceptical attacks, however, work continues: the results cannot be lightly dismissed. Evaluation of this work demands philosophical attention, since there are large metaphysical assumptions made, and the experimental results are vulnerable to logical criticism. The supposed kinds of paranormal phenomena are anatomized, and the current terminology criticized. Broad's basic limiting principles are examined, and the extent to which psychical research might threaten conventional science is considered. The metaphysical foundations of psychical research are examined. Psychical research takes a dualist view of human beings, although its experiments are behavioristic. Survival of death is assumed to be a matter susceptible to empirical verification. These assumptions are critically examined. I argue that ESP neither gives us knowledge, nor is it a form of perception. Although psychical researchers interpret their results in causal terms, this is illegitimate. Backwards causation, therefore, need not be canvassed as an explanation. As the basis for a scientific discipline, spontaneous cases are inadequate, as they involve underdescription (lack of detail) and overdescription (tendentious exaggeration). Observational cases, given the absence of theoretical explanations, and. the prevalence of fraud, also fail as science. Hume's arguments on testimony, and modern versions of them, are considered. Experimental parapsychology fails because ESP and PK seem to occur without conscious awareness or significant physiological signs, and in a way that transcends space and time. There is thus no way that science can gain a grip on them. Without a theory and a mechanism, there is nothing but a series of statistical quirks. The proposed models do not mesh in with the experimental results. Paranormal forces, if they existed, might contaminate all scientific work, and no one could ever know. Taken on its own terms, psychical research is impotent to undertake the task it has set itself.

In December of 1896 William James (1842-1910) penned the preface to The Will to Believe & Other Essays in Philosophy, announcing his novel philosophy of radical empiricism. Nearly one hundred and twenty years later, the metaphysical themes of his mature radical empiricist writings (e.g., his 1904-05 writings posthumously published as Essays in Radical Empiricism) continue to dominate the interpretations of the secondary literature. “William James’s Early Radical Empiricism: Psychical Research, Religion, and the ‘Spirit of Inner Tolerance’” offers a revisionist reading that prioritizes the epistemic, moral, and social elements of James’s early radical empiricism in light of his concerns expressed in the 1896 preface. By focusing on a close textual analysis that aims to historically and thematically re-situate James’s radical empiricism within the context of his major and minor work in the 1880s through the late 1890s, I argue for a supplemental interpretation that emphasizes James’s epistemic sensitivity to the plight of the perceived “irrational” other. This project demonstrates that not only is James’s early radical empiricism concerned with epistemological matters of fact and perspective, but also their social and moral implications. It suggests that an alternative narrative is uncovered if we attend to particular historical, philosophical, and religious themes that reveal themselves as focal points of James’s work in the 1890s, particularly in the year 1896. By historicizing his 1890s defense of the epistemic underdog I develop the narrative that James’s early radical empiricism embraces all experience and that this is illustrated by his genuine interest in the point of view of the believer, the marginalized, and the “irrational” other.

The aim of this thesis is to show that, despite a number of critics who either frowned upon or ignored W. B. Yeats's psychical interests, consideration of his mediumistic encounters between 1911 and 1916 is indispensable to the study of his art. Indeed, Yeats's unpublished records of seances and his other spiritualistic papers often present us with his direct sources of inspiration and point towards an understanding of their subsequent elaboration in some of his celebrated works. Chapter 1 and 2 ('Yeats's Spiritualistic Papers' and 'Yeats as a "Spiritualist" and "Psychical Researcher"') supply general information as regards unpublished material and describe Yeats's involvement with medium's, 'controls', and 'spirit-visitors'. Chapter 3 ('The Words-upon the Window-pane as an Example') deals with Yeats's spiritualistic sources and their dramatic elaboration in his seance-play, his only work where he made direct use of a spiritualistic setting and of the typical personae who frequent seance-rooms. Although Yeats's other works are discussed-in a chronological order, this play is given priority here, for it contains some major, themes and motifs which pervade his art. Chapters 4 and 5 ('Responsibilities: A First Attempt', and 'The Wild Swans at Coole: Ghostly Presences') deal with Yeats's attempts to introduce some major aspects of his psychical interests into his poetry by 'invoking' his dead and by adopting the persona of a medium in poems such as 'To a Shade' and 'In Memory of Major Robert Gregory'. Chapter 6 ('"Ego Dominus Tuus": Yeats, Leo Africanus, and the Process of Self-transformation') deals separately with 'Ego Dominus Tuus', another poem from The Wild Swans at Coole, in relation to Yeats's encounter with his 'opposite', the 'ghost' of Leo Africanus, and his formulation of the concept of the 'Daemon'. Chapters 7 and 8 ('Spiritualistic Scenarios in Michael Robartes and the Dancer' and 'From The Tower to Last Poems') examine Yeats's later use of theme's, motifs, and central situations particular to spiritualism and psychical research. Finally, the Conclusion suggests that, although Yeats's psychical investigations did not answer the 'great question whether the soul be immortal or not', his mediumistic encounters provided with images, symbols, and scenarios which enriched his art and often determined his literary tactics.

This dissertation examines the co-emergence of psychical research and modern professionalized psychology in the late nineteenth century. Questioning conservative historical accounts assuming an inherent incompatibility of these disciplines, this thesis argues that from the early 1880s to ca. 1910, it was often difficult if not impossible to draw a clear distinction between psychology and psychical research. Chapter 1 forms the integrative framework of the thesis through a historiographical review of changing attitudes to ‘occult’ properties of the mind in natural philosophy from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. Chapter 2 provides a study and comparison of concerns and epistemological presuppositions of the instigators and leading representatives of psychical research in England, France, Germany and the USA. Chapter 3 outlines competing methodological maxims in early experimental psychology, explores the work of the Society for Psychical Research in England and psychological societies conducting psychical research in Germany, and discusses the active involvement of the ‘father’ of modern American psychology, William James, in psychical research. Formulations of transcendental-individualistic models of unconscious or subliminal cognition by Carl du Prel in Germany and Frederic W. H. Myers in England, which informed the mature psychological thought of James in America and Théodore Flournoy in Switzerland, are discussed as landmarks in the history of concepts of the unconscious. Chapter 4 presents case studies of early professional psychologists repudiating psychical research from the territories of fledgling psychology, identifies recurring rhetorical patterns in these controversies, and connects them to wider cultural and historiographical developments studied in Chapter 1.

In the mid-1890s the London based Society for Psychical Research dispatched researchers to the Scottish Highlands and Islands to investigate an extraordinary power of prophecy said to be peculiar to the residents of these remote regions. Described in Gaelic as the An-da-shealladh or ‘the two sights’, and given in English as ‘second sight’, the phenomenon was most commonly associated with the vision of future events: the death of neighbour, the arrival of strangers into the community, the success or failure of a fishing trip and so forth. The SPR were not the first to take an interest in this pre-visionary faculty, rather they joined a legion of scientists, travel writers, antiquarians, poets and artists who had made enquires into the topic from the end of the seventeenth century. This thesis examines the remarkably prominent position enjoyed by Scottish second sight in the Victorian popular imagination. In seeking to appreciate why a strange visionary ability was able to make claims upon the attention of the whole nation where other folk motifs were consigned to the realms of specialist interest only, this project charts its migration through a series of nineteenth-century cultural sites: mesmerism and phrenology, modern spiritualism and anthropology, romance literature and folklorism, and finally psychical research and Celtic mysticism. Binding these individual case studies together is a cast of shared actors - Walter Scott, Catherine Crowe, William Howitt, Marie Corelli, Andrew Lang and Ada Goodrich Freer - and a focus on their common investigative and creative cultures. My interest is with how the power of second sight, once defined as a supernatural occurrence tied to the geographically distant and mysterious Scottish Highlands, comes to be transformed by the close of the nineteenth century, into a supra-normal facet of the psyche, potentially accessible and exploitable by all.

Hallucination was always the ghost story's elephant in the room. Even before the vogue for psychical research and spiritualism began to influence writers at the end of the nineteenth century, tales of horror and the supernatural, of ghosts and demons, had been haunted by the possibility of some grand deception by the senses. Edgar Allan Poe's stories were full of mad narrators, conscience-stricken criminals and sinners, and protagonists who doubted their very eyes and ears. Writers such as Dickens and Le Fanu continued this idea of the cheat of the senses. But what is certainly true is that, towards the end of the century, hallucination took on a new force and significance in ghostly and horror fiction. Now, its presence was not the dominion of a handful of experimental thinkers but the province of popular authors writing very different kinds of stories. The approaches had become many and diverse, from Arthur Machen's ambivalent interest in occultism to Vernon Lee's passion for art and antiquity. Henry James's The Turn of the Screw (1898) is the most famous text to pose a question that was, in fact, being asked by many writers of the time: reality or delusion? Other writers, too, were forcing their readers to assess whether the ghostly had its origins in some supernatural phenomenon from beyond the grave, or from some deception within our own minds. This thesis explores the many factors which contributed to this rise in the interest in hallucination and visionary experience, during the period 1880-1914. From the time when psychical research became hugely popular, up until the First World War often considered a watershed in the history of the ghost story and literature in general something happened to the ghost story and related fiction. Through a close analysis of stories and novels written by Robert Louis Stevenson, Vernon Lee, Henry James, Arthur Machen, and Oliver Onions, I attempt to find out what happened, and even more importantly why it happened at all.

This dissertation reports a research project conducted as part of the Doctor of Practical Theology professional doctorate programme at the University of Birmingham. The research explored how the perceived needs of older people in an Anglican Parish Church might be more adequately understood and addressed through an Action Research strategy. Initial investigation by means of focus groups led to the design and implementation of a short course for people over 55 through which they could share their practical wisdom about how to age well. The course is described and reflected on in detail as the key action within this Participative Action Research process. The research adopted a strengths-based philosophy and was influenced by the approach of Asset Based Community Development. Emergent theory from reflection on practice include non-essentialist, general and specific experiences of ageing which are related back to pastoral ministry. The findings suggest some ordinary ways in which older people can be enabled to adopt a positive attitude, overcome obstacles and challenge a deficit model of ageing. Theological reflections explore issues of normalizing ageing, the ethic of abundance, fullness of life, and a Christian theological anthropology which holds ageing to be a Creation good.

This thesis will show that, in its original form, “The Turn of the Screw” acted as a monument to the intellectual unity shared between Henry James and his brother William. Through evaluating James’ biography, memoirs, and letters with William, this thesis will illustrate the subtle collaborative inspirations that initially helped James write the first twelve-part serial edition of “The Turn of the Screw” for Collier’s Weekly, which ran from January 27, 1898 until April 16, 1898. I will also demonstrate the effect of William’s philosophy and his death on the revisions James’ made to his story as published in the twelfth volume of his New York Edition (NYE).

This study aims to understand the experience of people suffering from mental disorder. The patients are enrolled in a mental health ambulatory clinic in the city of Natal (RN). Mental disorders are growing rapidly in the contemporary world and are a source of intense mental suffering. Besides patients being strongly marked by a history of isolation and prejudice, they have been the target of real atrocities committed in the name of preservation of a supposed normality. The understanding and treatment of this disorder is influenced by cultural and historical inferences, depending on the period in which it is experienced. Semi-directed Interviews were conducted with a group of users, with the emphasis on giving voice to their uniqueness and individuality, highlighting how each one perceives his or her own experience. These were recorded and later transcribed by identifying the core of meanings. The results were analyzed under the gaze of the Humanist Phenomenology Existential perspective, which aims to unravel the phenomenon, without truths from volatility, highlighting the existence of the mental disorder as a way of living, being permeated by suffering mental and influenced by social problems, assuming contours very particular to each individual. Some progress has been perceived, even by users, with respect to the change of paradigm in the way of care, but still there is a consistent emphasis on medical and drug use. The changes point to the need for offering services to replace the asylum hospital model, and in addition to accept the bearer of mental disorder as a citizen, a bearer of rights who should be accepted and respected by society. Despite the pain expressed and its close liaison with suicide, their reports are full of perspectives and attitudes of confrontation facing life, pointing to new possibilities to be, recreating itself
O presente trabalho tem como objetivo compreender a experi?ncia de pessoas portadoras de transtorno mental, atendidas em um ambulat?rio da rede substitutiva de aten??o e cuidados em sa?de mental da cidade de Natal (RN). O transtorno mental vem sofrendo um crescimento vertiginoso no mundo contempor?neo, sendo fonte de intenso sofrimento ps?quico. Al?m de fortemente marcado por um hist?rico de isolamento e preconceito, tem sido alvo de verdadeiras atrocidades cometidas em nome da preserva??o de uma suposta normalidade. A compreens?o e tratamento desse transtorno recebe interfer?ncias da cultura e do per?odo hist?rico em que est? inserido. Foram realizadas entrevistas semi-dirigidas com um grupo de usu?rios, com o prop?sito de dar voz ? sua singularidade e subjetividade, valorizando a forma como cada um percebe a sua pr?pria experi?ncia. As mesmas foram gravadas e posteriormente transcritas, identificando os n?cleos de significados. Os resultados foram analisados sob o olhar da perspectiva Humanista Fenomenol?gica Existencial, que aponta para o desvelar do fen?meno, sem partir de verdades aprior?sticas, destacando a exist?ncia do transtorno mental enquanto uma possibilidade de ser, permeado pelo sofrimento ps?quico e influenciado por quest?es sociais relevantes, assumindo contornos muito particulares para cada indiv?duo. The increasing search for the psychological attendance, express in the waiting list in the clinics, clinic-school and in the private clinics, beyond the increase of the choice of psychology as professional career among the pre-college students, allows us to reflect about the place that is occupied by the Psychology, nowadays. The main focus of this study is the clinical Psychology, an area of psychology. The interest in to deepen the reflection regarding of the place that the psychologist and his acting had been assumed in our society, emerged from our own actuation as clinical psychologist. Reflections concerning the suffering of man of our time, accompanying our inquietude while researcher and made us question about the actuation of clinical psychology, nowadays. This research aimed to understand how the clinical psychologists perceive their practice, attempting to get appointments regarding of what is to be clinical psychologist in contemporaneity, more specifically, in the face of the psychic suffering. Based on a phenomenological perspective of research were accomplished semi-structured interviews and a discussion group with clinical psychologists. From the obtained results, we arrived to the following conclusions: a) the most of participants considered the academic formation of the psychologist insufficient and far from social reality; b) the speeches revealed that there is still a relation between the practice of clinical psychologist and the medical model of attendance. Nevertheless, was observed a change in the new psychologists conception of clinic, but is still in development; c) in the most of speeches, we founded consensus about the idea of that the social context which the contemporaneous world lives, had generated new demands of suffering; d) the clinical listening is considered the specificity of the clinical psychologist. We believe that this study had been contributed to fomenting the discussion about the academic formation of clinical psychologist and, the concepts and models of clinic that now base the actuation of the professionals that are inserted on the work market

A Psicologia cl?nica, uma das representantes das ?reas da Psicologia, ? o foco de maior aten??o nesse estudo. O interesse em aprofundar a reflex?o a respeito do espa?o que o psic?logo e sua atua??o vem tomando na sociedade atual, surgiu da nossa pr?pria atua??o como psic?loga cl?nica. Reflex?es sobre como, e do que sofre o homem hoje, acompanharam nossa inquieta??o como pesquisadora e nos fez questionar a atua??o da Psicologia cl?nica atualmente. Contexto: Ao longo do século XIX, investigações sobre a natureza de fenômenos psíquicos/espirituais como transes e supostas aquisições de informações indisponíveis aos canais sensoriais normais geraram grande debate, mobilizando médicos, cientistas e intelectuais. O professor francês Allan Kardec (1804-1869) foi um dos primeiros pesquisadores a propor uma investigação científica dos fenômenos mediúnicos, tornando-se um influente intelectual na Europa durante a segunda metade daquele século e no Brasil a partir do século XX. Todavia, seu método de investigação é amplamente desconhecido ou mal interpretado. Objetivos: Identificar e analisar o método de investigação empregado por Allan Kardec em suas investigações das experiências mediúnicas. Método: A pesquisa se concentrou na leitura e na análise, no idioma original, de toda obra publicada por Kardec: seus livros e os doze volumes da Revue Spirite: Journal d'Études Psychologiques. Foram obtidos e analisados documentos originais inéditos de Kardec. Fontes secundárias foram utilizadas como ferramentas de interpretação e de contextualização do trabalho de Kardec. Resultados: Kardec levantou e testou diversas hipóteses para explicar os fenômenos mediúnicos: fraude, alucinação, forças físicas, sonambulismo, inconsciente, clarividênica, transferência de pensamentos (telepatia) e espíritos desencarnados. Concluiu que todas estas hipóteses eram necessárias para explicar a totalidade das experiências chamadas de mediúnicas. Todavia, por concentrar sua atenção naquelas experiências que ele considerava envolver a comunicação de personalidades desencarnadas (espíritos), buscou desenvolver um método para obter informações úteis e confiáveis sobre a dimensão espiritual do universo. O objetivo de Kardec era naturalizar o domínio espiritual, fazendo dele um objeto de investigação racional e empírica para identificar as leis naturais que regeriam as supostas relações entre espíritos desencarnados e a humanidade encarnada. Por meio do estudo dos processos de investigação e de elaboração das teorias de Allan Kardec para os casos específicos das chamadas sensações dos espíritos logo após o desencarne e para o caso da possessão, percebe-se a busca de uma ampla e diversificada base empírica, bem como a construção progressiva e a reformulação de teorias explicativas. Conclusão: As investigações sobre os fenômenos psíquicos e mediúnicos preenchem uma importante lacuna, ainda negligenciada, da história da ciência e da medicina. Allan Kardec foi um dos pioneiros desses estudos ao propor a naturalização da dimensão espiritual e sua subsequente investigação empírica e racional. Uma melhor compreensão de seus métodos pode expandir nosso conhecimento sobre as relações entre ciência e espiritualidade no século XIX, bem como oferecer contribuições para os estudos atuais sobre o tema.
Background: During the nineteenth century, investigations on the nature of psychic / spiritual phenomena such as trances and supposed acquisition of information not available through conventional sensory channels generated intense debates which mobilized physicians, scientists and intellectuals. French educator Allan Kardec (1804-1869) was one of the first researchers to propose a scientific investigation on psychic phenomena, thus becoming an influential scholar in Europe during the second half of that century and in Brazil in the twentieth century. However, his method of investigation is largely unknown or misunderstood. Objectives: To identify and analyze the method employed by Allan Kardec in his investigations on psychic experiences. Method: Our research focused on the reading and analysis of his complete works – books and twelve volumes of the Revue Spirite: Journal d'Études Psychologiques – all of them examined in the original language. We have also obtained and analyzed unpublished and original documents which belonged to Kardec. Secondary sources were used as tools for interpretation and contextualization of his works. Results: Kardec formulated and tested several hypotheses in order to explain mediumistic phenomena, among them, fraud, hallucinations, physical forces, somnambulism, unconscious clairvoyance, thought transfer (telepathy) and disembodied spirits. He concluded that all of them were necessary to explain the totality of experiences called mediumistic. However, by concentrating his attention on those experiences that he considered involving the communication of disembodied personalities (spirits), he sought to develop a method to obtain useful and reliable information about the spiritual dimension of the universe. Kardec’s goal was to naturalize the spirit realm, regarding it as an object of rational and empirical scrutiny in order to identify natural laws that would govern relations between alleged disembodied spirits and the embodied humanity. Through the examination of his research processes and the development of his theories such as on the sensations of the spirits soon after disembodiment as well as on possession, we have come to realize that his work was grounded on a broad and diverse empirical basis and that the formulation and reformulation of his explanatory theories were continuous and progressive. Conclusion: Investigations on psychic and mediumistic phenomena fill an important gap, still neglected, in the history of science and medicine. Kardec was one of the pioneers of these studies when he proposed the naturalization of a spiritual dimension and its subsequent empirical and rational inquiry. A better understanding of his methods may expand our knowledge about the relationship between science and spirituality in the nineteenth century as well as provide input to current studies on the subject.

This research has resulted of investigations appeared from our work experience as psychologist in a prison of the state Rio Grande do Norte. It deals with the meeting with prisoner in the search for the rescue of the human being dignity, discovering the being that finds annulled by backwards of the prison. The current debate on the prisoners in Brazil has as focus the creation of efficient strategies in the combat to the criminal acts, not being worried in understanding the historical and social conditions in the context in which such acts develop. Our objective was to reach an understanding of the experience of the prisoner in the situation of freedom deprivation in Natal (RN) city. Its significant social relevance meets in emphasized thematic which intends to be revealing of the not-said one of these citizens. The epistemological space and the vision of adopted human being support in the humanist ideas of the Centered Approach in the Person and construct self, central nucleus of the personality theory proposal by Carl Rogers. We opt to the phenomenological method as way of access to the singularity of the experience of each one of the participants, supporting us in the strategy of the narrative as expression of the lived world. The results had pointed that the investigated experience is through suffering, that is, the way to be in the world of prisoner in the situation of freedom deprivation is felt by him/her as difficult to support. This reality is had by him/her as difficult to control, having a negative emotional repercussion for the self, leading the citizen to the alienation of his/her existential flow in these circumstances. The reflections produced in this work take us to consider that the punishment practices on behalf of a normalization of the behavior, linked to the recovery idea, do not meet to the intention of the arrests, that come demonstrating to the inefficacy of the objectives shown in the law as well as the loss of the human being dignity
Esta pesquisa resultou de indaga??es surgidas a partir de nossa experi?ncia de trabalho como psic?loga numa institui??o penitenci?ria do estado do Rio Grande do Norte. Trata do encontro com o apenado na busca pelo resgate da dignidade humana, desvelando o ser que se encontra anulado por tr?s das grades. O debate atual sobre o apenado no Brasil tem como foco a cria??o de estrat?gias eficientes no combate aos atos criminosos, n?o estando preocupado em compreender as condi??es sociais e hist?ricas presentes no contexto no qual tais atos se desenvolvem. Nosso objetivo foi alcan?ar uma compreens?o da experi?ncia do apenado na situa??o de priva??o de liberdade na cidade de Natal (RN). Sua significativa relev?ncia social encontra-se na tem?tica abordada que pretende ser reveladora do n?o-dito desses sujeitos. O espa?o epistemol?gico e a vis?o de ser humano adotados ap?iam-se nas id?ias humanistas da Abordagem Centrada na Pessoa e no constructo self, n?cleo central da teoria de personalidade proposta por Carl Rogers. Optamos pelo m?todo fenomenol?gico como via de acesso ? singularidade da experi?ncia de cada um dos participantes, apoiando-nos na estrat?gia da narrativa como express?o do mundo vivido. Os resultados apontaram que a experi?ncia investigada ? de sofrimento, ou seja, que o modo de estar no mundo do apenado na situa??o de priva??o de liberdade ? sentido por ele como dif?cil de suportar. Essa realidade ? tida por ele como dif?cil de controlar, tendo uma repercuss?o emocional negativa para o self, conduzindo o sujeito ? aliena??o de seu fluxo vivencial nestas circunst?ncias. Tema de interesse durante os séculos XVIII e XIX, assim como início do século XX, os chamados fenômenos psíquicos reuniram os esforços de boa parte da elite intelectual da época, principalmente no que diz respeito aos estudos da consciência. Figura importante que integrou esses debates foi William James, um dos fundadores da psicologia norte americana. Em um primeiro momento, ele recorre a Janet e à Escola Francesa tomando por base a ideia do automatismo psíquico e da dissociação da consciência. Seu interesse pelos fenômenos relativos ao self dos indivíduos levou-o, entretanto, aos estados alterados de consciência, nos quais a pessoa seria capaz de ultrapassar o poder de síntese da consciência que lhes é constitucional. Desse modo, James passa a recorrer a Myers e à sua teoria do self subliminar, que aponta para a possibilidade de um espectro psíquico transcendente. Abrir-se-iam, assim, possibilidades para o estudo dos fenômenos psíquicos, bem como das experiências religiosas e místicas, principalmente da mediunidade que, a partir da ideia do self subliminar, fugiria ao domínio do patológico. Tendo em vista o que foi apontado, o presente estudo busca compreender o self e suas alterações em James, através de uma análise conceitual, levando em consideração as publicações psicológicas do autor sobre o assunto.
The so-called psychic phenomena were a subject of interest during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as well as in the early 1900s, and drew the attention of a significant part of that period’s intelligentsia, specially those who were interested in the study of consciousness. William James, one of the founding fathers of North American psychology, was an important name that joined those debates. Initially, he turned to Pierre Janet and the French school taking into consideration the concepts of psychic automatism and dissociation of consciousness. However, his interest in phenomena related to the self in individuals led him to observe altered states of consciousness, in which a person would allegedly be able to go beyond his power of synthesis, a fundamental trait of the mind. Therefore, James resorted to Frederic Myers’ theory of the subliminal self, which considers the possibility of a trancendent psychic spectrum of experience. Considering that concept, new perspectives other than the pathological were thus made available to the research of psychic phenomena, as well as mystical and religious experiences, including mediumship. Taking all that into consideration, the present study aims at understanding James’ theory of self and its alterations through a conceptual analysis, considering his psychological writings on the subject.

Literature on marriage shows that in the span of a single generation it has become the norm for both spouses to work outside the home. The inception of dual career marriages in the 1970s has created challenges and complications in the marital system as women break traditional gender roles in families and lead the way toward equality at home, just as they do in the industrial world. Black South African communities are no exception to this trend. The theoretical framework of social constructionism was used to identify the ways in which the participants construct their identities as Black professional women in dual career marriages. In-depth interviews were conducted with 11 Black professional women in dual career marriages to identify the discourses that construct their marriages, their autonomy in marriage and how their construction of autonomy influences their construction of marital satisfaction. The study found that cultural and Christian discourses inform the ways in which the participants construct marriage, autonomy and marital satisfaction. Although the participants construct themselves as empowered and autonomous individuals, particularly in the workplace, they construct themselves as less autonomous within their marriages despite their expressed need to be seen as equal partners. As a result of their dual identities the participants consciously adopt different behaviours in different contexts and in this way reproduce dominant constructions of women.

Background: Critical race theorist, Eduardo Bonilla-Silva (2014), states that the racial climate in the United States has shifted away from the more overt forms of racism towards a race-neutral and (Bobo, 2011; Lentin, 2011; Plaut, 2010; Smith et al., 2011) color blind ideology (Alexander, 2012; Emerson & Smith, 2000; Omi & Winant, 2014; Smith et al., 2011; Wise, 2010). According to Gushue and Constantine (2007), “The conscious or unconscious minimization, denial, or distortion of race and racism is known as color blindness” (Neville et al., 2000; Neville et al., 2001). This erroneous perspective is detrimental (Atwater, 2008) to the organizational structure of the United States (Emerson & Smith, 2000), especially the Christian [church] (Bonilla-Silva, 2002; Yancey, 2010). In the state of Mississippi, approximately 170,000 (UMData, 2017) Black and White individuals identify as United Methodist. This racial composition is unique to Mississippi because Blacks make up a large proportion of the population (Census, 2010). However, little to no research has been conducted to examine the colorblind racial attitudes of adults in The United Methodist Church (UMC) or to evaluate current anti-racism programs in Mississippi’s UMC. According to The UMC’s official website, no formalized evidence-based program exist that both teaches and trains its members to be engaged in racial justice. Therefore, the development of an intervention that investigates color-blind racial ideology (Neville, et al., 2013) from a critical race theory framework is needed. Program Description: Counter Narrative is a faith-based program, set to be implemented spring of 2018 in The UMC. The program challenges three notions: racism is no longer a problem, Christians should be colorblind, and that the church is silent about racial injustices. It has three components: Revising the Narrative (anti-racism workshops), Rewriting the Narrative (cross-racial training program), and R2 (race relations task force). Aim: Engage adults in constructive dialogue around race Explore and examine participants personal attitudes, behaviors, and language towards race colorblindness Educate participants about the historical context of racism and racial equity in America and The UMC Equip participants with the resources and skills to build authentic cross-racial relationships and to become racial justice advocates Methodology: Revising the Narrative—6 anti-racism workshops will be held in one year, for approximately eight hours each. Each session will be co-facilitated by individuals trained in anti-racism and will include a worship service, an overview of the social principles, history of the church’s commitment to eradicate racism, content knowledge, and processing exercises. Evaluation: Pretest/posttest survey will be administered with multiple follow-ups. Rewriting the Narrative—31 sessions (Training, Social Events, Service Learning, and Diversity Workshop) will take place over one year. Evaluation: Pretest/posttest survey will be administered and focus groups will be conducted. R2—12 meetings will be held, once a month for two hours. Also, participants will receive at least 14 hours of anti-racism training. Evaluation: Pretest/posttest survey will be administered and in-depth interviews will be conducted at the end of the year. Long-Term Objective: Reduce racial colorblindness and racial tension between Black and White Christians.

My research on Victor Brauner’s work in the first two decades of his affiliation with the Surrealist group in Paris re-establishes the role played by the Romanian Jewish artist in the definition of automatic Surrealist procedures of painting and mixed-technique objects that relied upon a new and unconventional understanding of the occult. In the three chapters of this study of Victor Brauner’s work in the 1930s and early 1940s, I analyse key notions, such as the fantastic, animal magnetism, and the occult practices of art making in a Surrealist context. The fantastic is discussed in the first chapter of the thesis from a literary perspective with political connotations in Surrealism, which resulted from a debate engaged in nineteenth-century French literature on the issue of the marvellous versus the fantastic. Due to the Surrealists’ interest in the fantastic a new category emerged, the fantastic art, which is examined in this first chapter in connection with Brauner’s artworks in the 1930s. The incursion into the fantastic, with focus on the premonition of the painter’s left eye loss in his artworks of the 1930s is completed with an approach to spiritualism that had a revival at the time. The second chapter of the thesis investigates the doctrine of animal magnetism and the state of magnetic somnambulism in eighteenth-century scholarship and shows how this experimentation had influenced the development of a new branch of the science, metapsychics or psychical research at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth one. I take into account and demonstrate that these outdated and modern domains of enquiry into the unknown and beyond reality were appealing to Surrealists, in particular to Brauner, due to their research into unconscious processes of the mind. I argue that through the attainment of a condition similar to the one of the somnambulist in sessions of magnetic sleep, the Surrealists aimed to generate automatic procedures of painting and object making. In the third chapter of the thesis I discuss Victor Brauner’s technique of drawing with a candle, or le cirage, as an automatic procedure of art developed in connection with the occult. This final part of the thesis makes also manifest the association of Brauner’s artworks in the early 1940s with practices of the occult in the near and centuries before past.

This thesis is an ethnography of Anglo-Indians in Calcutta. All ethnographies are accounts arising out of the experience of a particular kind of encounter between the people being written about and the person doing the writing. This thesis, amongst other things, reflects my changing views of how that experience should be recounted. I begin by outlining briefly who Anglo-Indians are, a topic which in itself alerts one to complexities of trying to get an ethnographic grip on a shifting subject. I then look at some crucial elements that are necessary for an “understanding” of Anglo-Indians in Calcutta: the work that has already been done in relation to Anglo-Indians, the urban context of the lives of my research participants and I discuss the methodological issues that I had to deal with in constructing this account. In the second part of my thesis I explore some crucial elements of the lives of Anglo-Indians in Calcutta: the place of Christianity in their lives, education not just as an aspect of socialisation but as part of their very being and, finally, the public rituals that now give them another way of giving expression to new forms of Anglo-Indian becoming. In all of my work I was driven by a desire to keep close to the experience of the people themselves and I have tried to write a “peopled” ethnography. This ambition is most fully realised in the final part of my thesis where I recount the lives of three key participants.

Drawing from observation, autoethnography, ethnographic research and audio-taped interviews, this thesis explores the complicated and emotionally charged relationship between homosexuality and Christianity. The current culture war being waged in the media between the Religious Right and members of the LGBT community often results in the isolation and rejection of those who would define themselves as gay Christians. This thesis explores the role of the Bible as it informs and catalyzes this war and other foundational beliefs used as weapons in this rhetorical conflict. Additionally, this thesis analyzes the current battle between the church and the social movement for change in light of the historical battles fought over similar movements. The rhetoric of Christianity, specifically Fundamentalist rhetoric, has been emphatically defended and then dramatically changed in every such battle. Is this a possible resolution for today’s current battle? The thesis explores the historical basis and current application of rhetorical effects on this conflict through the author’s insight as a veteran of both worlds, interviews with major players in the battle such as Randy Thomas and Kristin Tremba of Exodus International and interviews with people who step on the battlefield everyday as pastors, congregants or observers in the fight. With each interview or rhetorical analysis, the viability of dialogue between these two groups is questioned and investigated.

According to the research purpose and outcome of analyzed data, following points are concluded: 1.The realization and interpretation of life meaning in Christianity are affected by their pre-understanding of Christianity. 2.The realization and interpretation of life meaning in Christianity are affected by their identity status and religious orientation of Christianity. 3.Although the reception of life meaning in Christianity is multidimensional, the major interpretation of Christianity meaning is focused on themselves. 4.It is hard to realize the ultimate meaning of life, the influence of Christianity to their life meaning is mostly remained on the meaning of the moment. 5.The content of their life meaning in Christianity is not obviously related to their racial identity. According to the result and conclusion of this research, some specific suggestions are provided to the Christian adolescent counselors and researcher interested as a reference to the field of practical and academic.

This paper is an examination of the role of gender in the "fin-de-siècle" scientific investigations and theoretical work of the British Society for Psychical Research (SPR). Focusing specifically on the SPR's investigations into the séance phenomena of the well-known American medium Mrs. Leonora Piper, I examine how Piper's cross-gendered séance "performances" were considered desirable within the context of late-Victorian psychical investigations, despite their transgressive potential outside of the confines of the séance. Piper's masculine séance "performances" fulfilled the masculine code of behaviour that was integral to the SPR's scientific investigations, and investigators' participation in the production of Piper's masculine trance identities during the séance reveals that specific kinds of masculine identities were enacted at the "fin-de-siècle" that served the important purpose of asserting the legitimacy of the scientific process. Although Piper's séance "impersonations" of men who shared SPR investigators' scientific concerns were tremendously influential in determining the SPR's conceptual language and intellectual direction, investigators were careful to suppress the potentially subversive effects of these "impersonations" in order to preserve the integrity of Victorian beliefs about the stability and naturalness of gendered identities. In order to contain Piper's "impersonations," investigators appealed to a psychological explanatory framework that described Piper's trance personalities as subconsciously produced romantic creations; The SPR's psychological work describing the subconscious mind's tendency to produce a number of different selves was a radical and quintessentially "modern" assertion of the "normal" individual's potential to exhibit characteristics whose gendered associations were at odds with the individual's anatomical sex. At the same time, the SPR's psychological explanation of Piper's "impersonations" acted as a conservative means to preserving traditional Victorian understandings of sexual difference since it dismissed cross-gendered trance; "impersonations" as fictive (and hence unreal) creations. Despite the conservative effects of the SPR's explanatory framework, the significant presence of Piper's male "impersonations" and SPR investigators' active role in making these cross-gendered "performances" possible offers insight into the erosion of Victorian understandings of sexual difference in a variety of unpredictable quarters at the turn of the century.

Dit is boonop vir die pastor moeilik om in hierdie leefWereld die sieke se gevoelens te begryp. Meer uitsonderlik is dat dit vir enige pastor moeilik is om die tradisionele beskouing en belewenis van die sieke in sy eie kultuursituasie te verstaan. Daar is egter min materiaal oor die siekte-belewenis van die Pedi beskikbaar aangesien daar oor die algemeen min navorsing gedoen is. Pastorale sorg aan siekes vereis dat kennis geneem moet word van die kulturele agtergrond asook godsdiensbeskouing. Teen hierdie agtergrond is die doel van hierdie studie om 'n raamwerk van die denke van die Pedi-siekes te verkry waarby die siekepastoraat kan aansluit. Daar is bevind dat betekenistoekenning van die meeste respondente grotendeels binne die kulturele raamwerk van die Pedi-tradisie plaasgevind het. Hierdie bevinding is belangrik vir die siekepastoraat aangesien daar by sekere begrippe aansluiting gevind kan word. Die navorser het ook probeer om vanuit die betekenis van die subjekte se belewing van siekte 'n beperkte aantal riglyne vir 'n sensitiewe kultureel georienteerde siekepastoraat te noem.
This study explores the field of pastoral care of the sick within the frame of the sick person's traditional environment. This research study was only directed at the Pedi. Little material exists on the Pedi's experience of sickness because of the general lack of research. Furthermore, pastoral care of the sick demands specific notice of the cultural background as well as their religious views. Bearing this in mind the purpose of this study is to find a frame work of the Pedi's thought to which the pastoral care could be linked. With the help of qualitative methodological research, in depth interviewing, participation and observation the researcher tried to obtain a frame work of the Pedi's experience of sickness within their traditional situation. Through the means of the qualitative emperical research strategy these stories were described. It is found that most respondents emphasise the meaning of their sickness largely within the cultural framework of the Pedi tradition. This is important for pastoral care because on these thoughts pastoral care could link up.

A Research on the Strategy of Mission through Video Media in Taiwan Christianity – An Application in the Rehoboth Holiness Church Student: En Lai Yeh Advisor : Dr. Dai Wenjun Abstract Taiwan’s public media thrived after 1987 when the martial law was lifted; in 1988 the press restriction was lifted; in 1992 broadcasting and television license was opened to the public; the media market was once monopolized by Kuomintang (KMT), administration and military was opened to private or public capitals. Various religious communities also took this chance and established their television stations. In this era of exponential growth of information, people are making use of various media tools to seek materials for personal needs, while the early reading habit is increasingly overtaken by the interest in multimedia. As such Taiwan Christian Church must keep up with this development of a new form of information transmission. Nowadays, on-line media thrives on multimedia records, and timely delivery is no longer a challenge. The new media has transformed Taiwan’s media landscape by overcoming the impediments from the requirement of traditional media appliances and personnel or the dependence on advertisers. Personal media can also serve as an information release platform. New media help people obtain information even more quickly and readily, redefining the media industry in Taiwan as a whole. The questions to be addressed herein are, how Taiwan Christian Church shall cope with the shift in media form to make different resources available to its members, and tap into various on-line video platforms to cater to their personal needs, and how the Church shall engage potential Gospel audience. In light of this, some conclusions and suggestions are drawn to be shared by the community. The writer approached this research by way of qualitative survey plus in-depth interview and focusing on eight churches and organizations of Taiwan Christian community using multimedia in their missionary undertakings. Based on an analysis of the interview results, a contemporary strategy and overview of multimedia missionary practices proper for Taiwan Christian community are drawn for reference. Over the study, a total of five conclusions or suggestions are drawn as follows: 1. key roles are needed in promoting multimedia missionary practices; 2. churches need to take the chance and embrace the movement of new media; 3. it is important to engage followers in the participation of multimedia missionary undertakings, and shape its influence by building up both the quality and quantity of multimedia products; 4. it would be instrumental to bridging virtual spaces and real entities if more extensive applications of multimedia are used to build connection with the audience; 5. there is the need to transform the approach to multimedia missionary undertakings and to go beyond internal communication within churches. The initiative “fairlangen.org – fair leben in Erlangen” (fair living in Erlangen) campaigns for global justice. Its activities are based on a holistic understanding of mission. Through networking, fostering public relations, educational work and specific campaigns, the initiative supports local commitment to global justice. Its main focus is the promotion of fair consumer behaviour. This MTh dissertation offers a missiological reflection of the initiative fairlangen.org, which is the author‘s action research project. Firstly, it establishes the missiological grounds on which local commitment for global justice can be understood as a part of holistic mission. This is concretised by actions to promote fair consumer behaviour, with an emphasis on Fair Trade. On this basis, the specific segment of fairlangen's practical activities are analysed using qualitative methods, and reflected upon in missiological terms. This study concludes by giving new impulses to other missionary projects that are planning to campaign for global justice.
Die Initiative »fairlangen.org – fair leben in Erlangen« setzt sich auf der Grundlage eines ganzheitlichen Missionsverständnisses für globale Gerechtigkeit ein. Durch Netzwerkarbeit, Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, Bildungsarbeit und Kampagnenarbeit fördert sie den lokalen Einsatz für globale Gerechtigkeit, vor allem fördert die Initiative ein gerechtes Konsumverhalten. In der vorliegenden Masterarbeit wird die Initiative fairlangen.org, die das Handlungsforschungsprojekt des Autors ist, missiologisch reflektiert. Dazu wird zunächst erarbeitet, wie der lokale Einsatz für globale Gerechtigkeit als ein Aspekt von ganzheitlicher Mission missiologisch begründet werden kann. Konkretisiert wird dies am Engagement zur Förderung eines gerechten Konsumverhalten – mit einem Schwerpunkt auf Fairem Handel. Davon ausgehend wird die Praxis des Handlungsforschungsprojekts fairlangen.org in diesem Bereich mit qualitativen Methoden untersucht und missiologisch reflektiert. Als Fazit der Untersuchung können Impulse für andere missionarische Projekte formuliert werden, die sich für globale Gerechtigkeit einsetzen möchten.

This study is an inquiry into discourses which influence gay people's lives. Foucault's ideas regarding knowledge, power, discipline, discourse and sexuality form the epistemological background enabling a social constructivist-deconstructive analysis of these concepts in relation to the problem of homosexuality. The theological origins of influential discourses form the focus of one chapter. Additional discursive fields - such as psychology, education, the military and legislature - are also investigated. Besides the research initiator, three other participants shared their experiences of being gay in a conservative religious context. The narrative analysis spawned five themes of discourse ranging from homophobic discourses - which invite oppression into silence - through reverse-discourse, to those discourses which encourage free expression of gayness. The study seems to support a Foucauldian view that there are various influential power-relations which contest for the right to define human sexuality. Judging from the study, homosexuals do not appear to be powerless or completely silenced at all.

abstract: This study analyzes competing forms of Protestant Christianity within the Bible Belt of the Upper South (Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina). On one hand, a conservative “culture war” version of Christianity has dominated the South, and deeply influenced national politics, for almost fifty years. This form of Christianity is predicated on white supremacy and heteropatriarchy and regulates religious, as well as sexual, gender, and racial norms. On the other hand, an emerging movement of those once socialized in the culture war version of Protestantism is now reconfiguring the regional traditions. Through ethnographic fieldwork, qualitative interviews, and historical analysis, this study explores the ways these post-culture war Christians are navigating and negotiating relations with family, church, and politics and society more broadly. This work argues that Protestantism in the Upper South is being re-landscaped from the inside by individuals staying within the tradition who seek to reorient regional, national and religious identities. This study goes beyond generalizations about changes in American religion to shed light on the specific motivations, conflicts and dynamics inherent in shifts in lived religion in this particular region. In so doing it also contributes to deeper understanding of processes of religious change more generally.

This thesis deals with religious interpretations of psychotic illness. In the theoretical part, the psychotic disorder is first briefly defined and several stimulating psychological interpretations are outlined. An overview of the history of the relationship of psychology and religion follows. The next chapter summarizes some religious interpretations of psychosis. The focus of the work is on the research part. It is a psychological qualitative research, which shows how three Christian-oriented mentally ill women with psychotic symptoms interpret their own illness. The case studies are then compared in a separate chapter, entailing a slight generalization of the results. At the end there is a reflection on the limitations of the research.

The general view of educators at all levels of education as well as trainers in industry, that learners do not have the ability to use their knowledge inter-curricular and holistically in their lives prompted the study. A very superficial study that was done in 2000, regarding the same problem, acted as the starting point for this study. The main purpose of the study was to determine the reasons for the general perception by educators that learners do not use their embedded knowledge in an inter-curricular manner. It also aimed to determine the most effective facilitating styles and methods that would help the learners to develop the skills to learn with the main aim to achieve learning that lasts and not just learning to pass. The use of deconstruction as a learning activity forms the biggest part of this qualitative action research project which was based on the main principles of the hermeneutic approach namely, communication followed by interpretation in order to reach understanding. The principles of narrative therapy were also used in the project. The hermeneutic approach followed in this study also allows the reader to walk the road with the participants as a narrative, first person reporting style provides rich background information regarding all the participants of the study as well as the contexts in which the actions took place. The reader will also be able to feel the closeness that existed between the educator and the learners who were part of this study.

This thesis addresses pervasive ways in which New Zealanders thought about Jesus during the years from approximately 1900 to 1940. In particular, it considers ways that he appeared within discourse, contexts in which he was especially invoked, and ends for which he was employed. It examines Jesus as a religious icon, but also as a reflexive tool for examining the place of religion in New Zealand culture and society. In this sense, it addresses Jesus as a phenomenon of social and cultural history. The thesis draws on a wide range of sources and methodologies, and is organised thematically into chapters that highlight predominant images of Jesus and important contexts that helped shape them. It considers Jesus in the languages of doctrine and devotion, social reform, and for children. It further assesses images of Jesus' masculinity, and representations of him as an 'anti-Church' prophet. The overarching argument is that Jesus constituted an increasingly important focal point in New Zealand religiosity during the period under investigation. Especially within Protestant Christianity, Jesus became a more important discursive focus and acquired new status as a source of authority. This movement reflected wider social and cultural shifts, particularly related to understandings of the nature of society and notions of personality. The increasingly Jesus-centred orientation of Protestant religiosity was fundamentally an attempt to modernise Christianity and extend its reach into the community. In particular, Jesus was invoked as the simple core of Christianity - the attractive essence of 'true religion'. Jesus-centred religiosity provided evidence of a changing social and cultural situation, demonstrating that religious language and ideals could be sensitive indicators of such shifts. The rise of Jesus as a focal point in religion was a response to change that reoriented Protestant Christianity in the process.

Probe into religious life in the Czech Republic would certainly be beneficial for the Czech sociology and religious studies, her research and treatment would not necessarily have to be based on several years of research activity. Due to the type of work I have therefore decided to focus on selected Czech city whose religious life might yield representative results. The task was daunting. The main stumbling block appeared to be time-consuming and the amount of data required for processing. The entire probe is based on socio-anthropological empirical research to not even bring religionistic theological knowledge, although it is clear that their job does not shirk. In culturologistic context is the focus of interest in the work of churches and religious associations as a subculture, their inner and outer life, forms of communication with the urban community and defining against her and against other religious groups. In this context attention is paid to the question of how different religious groups perceived their predominantly atheistic environment. Processed results should bring both the synthetic evaluation of the religious life of the city selected as the more general conclusions about the importance and possibilities of life in contemporary Czech society and last but not least, the conclusions...

This work is concerned with healing practices that are created within a participatory framework in pastoral theology. It works in post-colonial and postapartheid times in South Africa following on from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The thesis looks to forms of participation with both victims and perpetrators of apartheid. It seeks to challenge singular identities of victims and perpetrators, whites and blacks, which are bound up in juridical practices that are embedded within binary forms of identity. It exposes some of the problems associated with the splitting of a subject from an object of enquiry. The research concerns a journey with a group of Mothers who lost their sons and husbands to the violence of the apartheid state. It is also a journey with some of the perpetrators who were responsible for the elimination of these men. It seeks to deconstruct identity in order to find alternate descriptions of people, both the victims and perpetrators that are not constructed within a binary oppositional form. This is worked with ideas from the social construction movement particularly ideas relating to relational responsibility. The research attempts to create a safe enough context for accountability, vulnerability and healing to take place within a participatory frame of pastoral care. It works with post-modern theology and some of the philosophy of Derrida, Foucault and Levinas.

This study explores the religious responsiveness of the rural Khmer in the location of Snoul, Kratie in Cambodia. After setting a methodological framework, both missiologically and empirically, a historical overview and religious developments are presented. With the methods of qualitative social research, the religiosity of the rural Khmer is elicited, by using the religious dimensions of rituals, experience, knowledge, meaning of life and ethics as described by Glock. The empirical results demonstrate that religious experience is central to the religiosity of the Khmer, through which they hope to achieve joy, peace and success. The religious experience is, however, twofold. One is focused on the present life; the other is future-oriented. Reflecting the empirical findings missiologically, it will be argued, that the missional encounter to the religious context requires a holistic approach: a narrative theology, spiritual encounter with evil powers, and an incarnational ministry as good news to the poor.
Diese Arbeit untersucht die religiöse Ansprechbarkeit der ruralen Khmer in der Lokation Snoul, Kratie in Kambodscha. Nachdem die methodologischen Voraussetzungen, missiologisch als auch empirisch erörtert sind, werden ein historischer Überblick und die religiösen Entwicklungen dargelegt. Mit den Methoden der qualitativen Sozialforschung und anhand der Dimensionen von Glock wird die Religiösität der ruralen Khmer eruiert, die das Ritual, Erfahrung, Wissen, Sinn im Leben (Ideologie) und das ethische Verhalten betreffen. Die empirischen Ergebnisse zeigen, dass religiöse Erfahrungen zentral für die Religiösität der Khmer sind, in der nach Freude, Glück und Gelingen (FGG) gestrebt wird. Die religiöse Erfahrung ist aber zweigeteilt: Die eine auf die Gegenwart fokussiert, während die andere zukunftorientiert ist. In der missionstheologischen Reflektion wird festgestellt, dass eine missionale Begegnung mit dem religiösen Kontext, einen ganzheitlichen Zugang verlangt, welche sowohl eine narrative Theologie, eine geistliche Begegnung mit den bösen Mächten und ein inkarnatorischen Dienst als das Evangelium für die Armen, beinhaltet.

The division of labor in households is an important topic in marital relationships. Families are not static; they are in a constant state of change. Employment, individual family members’ schedules, and religious beliefs can impact how couples divide household tasks. This particular study draws on in-depth interviews of four married couples from American Baptist churches to explore how couples within this type of church divide household tasks. The interviews focused on the management of second- and third-shift household tasks, as well as childcare. The purpose of obtaining this information was to see if the way American Baptist couples handle second-, third-shift duties, and childcare is more consistent with general population couples or more consistent with Evangelical/Conservative couples. Husbands and wives were interviewed separately to obtain individual thoughts and opinions. The interviews revealed that when it comes to second-shift tasks and child care, American Baptist couples are more in line with general population couples. As far as third-shift duties, Evangelical, general population, and American Baptist couples are all currently handling in very similar ways with the female performing the majority of third-shift tasks.

In South Africa the death of a significant caregiver is a haunting possibility. Violence, crime, road accidents, HIV/AIDS, cancer, diabetes and substance abuse are household words that describe some of the causes of "untimely deaths" of parents who still have young, school-going children. These children carry their bereavement with them to school. The challenge of standing with them lies not only with their caregivers, but also with staff and children in our school community. In co-authoring conversations with children in our school who have experienced bereavement and loss, this qualitative study used research as co-search to uncover children's preferred knowledges and spiritualities about coping, hope, care and communities of concern. This study used therapy-as-research and participatory action research-as-therapy in what developed into a network of caring communities for the participants, caregivers and therapist.

This dissertation examines the experience that women have of the church. Work was done with groups of women in the Eastern Cape to hear their first hand experiences on this subject. A study was also made of the experiences of women as recorded in other parts of Africa and the world. South African women are situated within the broader context of society, thus also matters pertaining to this broader context were examined.The situation facing South African women in society and within the church is complex and difficult. In the final chapter, rather than looking at how women could change external structures, the focus is on women paying attention to themselves. The great importance of women honouring themselves, and giving themselves priority, and that of developing a spiritual practice that is nurturing and relevant to their lives, were suggested as a prerequisite for effective change on a wider level. An emphasis was thus put on the inner world of the woman, where, it is argued, many South African women need to experience a revolution. That women need support in this journey was stressed, with the participation in women's groups seen as being transforming for women.

The modifications of its depictures in medieval art /Diploma thesis/ Prague 2011 − Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Education, Department of art education, 179 pages . Diploma thesis is focused on thematic antithesis Madonna and Pieta and the modifications of its depictures in medieval art. The intention of work is to present theoretical knowledges of art history in kontext with art education and to describe the limits od educational work with religious topics. The first part presents the concept of cultural christianity and its position in czech curiculum. The second part presents historical study focused on iconografy of Madonna and Pieta, and the modifications of Madonna and Pieta in medieval ithalian painting in 13th and 14th century. On the knowledges of theoretical study is based educational project for grammar school students. Vizual problems of this the project are tested in specific artistic work. The research deals with the losses the 7-11 year old child in die single parent family may experience. The research has been conducted from a practical theological (pastoral) perspective. The goal of the study was to investigate and elaborate upon the various losses the child may experience on a physical, cognitive, social, spiritual and an emotional level. In order to complement and verify the literature study, empirical methods of research were utilised. Focus groups were conducted within the framework of Gestalt Play Therapy. Parent interviews were used as an additional method of research. It became apparent, as a result of the literature and empirical studies, that the loss of a parent (whether by divorce/ abandonment/unmarried status/ death) affects the child on all levels of his/her development. Guidelines for the support of such a child are suggested.
Die navorsing handel oor die verlies(e) wat die 7-11 jarige kind in die enkelouergesin mag beleef. Die navorsing geskied vanuit 'n prakties-teologiese (pastorale) perspektief. Die doel van die studie was om die verliese wat die kind op fisiese, kognitiewe, emosionele, sosiale en geestelike vlak mag ervaar, te ondersoek en omskryf. Om die literatuurstudie aan te vul en te verifieer, al dan nie, is daar van empiriese navorsing gebruik gemaak. Fokusgroepe het plaasgevind binne 'n gestalt spelterapeutiese raamwerk. Oueronderhoude was as nog 'n wyse van ondersoek gebruik. Vanuit die literatuurstudie en empiriese navorsing het dit duidelik geword dat die verlies aan 'n ouer (vanwee egskeiding/ verlating/ongetroude status/ sterfte) die kind op al die vlakke van sy/haar ontwikkeling beinvloed. Riglyne tot ondersteuning aan hierdie kind is voorgestel.

The purpose of this study is to critically analyse selected scholarly views on the visionary experiences during Jesus’ baptism. Modern scholars have different opinions about the reports in the New Testament on Jesus’ baptismal visionary phenomena. Some scholars interpreted the events as Jesus’ actual seeing or vision and others accept it as literary creations by the authors, to make sense of the reports on seeing and hearing that are hard to understand. Reports like a Spirit descending in the form of a dove are extraordinary for most people and pose interpretive challenges. The two distinct trends identified in the study of visionary experiences are those who take the text on the visions literally and those who see them as literary creations. There is a new trend in biblical scholarship, which is comparative and invokes insights from cross-cultural research in order to understand the accounts of the visions as altered states of consciousness (ASC). These views are also presented, compared and evaluated selecting three major views from modern New Testament scholars. Among the scholars identified, who take the baptism visions literally, are Dunn, Meier, Marcus, Hurtado, Borg and Webb. The scholars selected, who consider the baptism visions as literary creations, are Sanders, Crossan, Miller and Strijdom. The scholars, who contributed to the new development in interpreting the texts on visionary experiences as ASC, are Pilch, Davies and DeMaris. Pilch uses the theoretical model of ASC and understands it differently from those used by Davies and DeMaris on which they base their interpretations. A scientific explanation of ASC is built from theories about how the brain and culture, together, create certain states of consciousness. All these views are analysed based on the scholarly interpretations from the three definitive trends in the visions research, comparing the caretaker versus critical at a meta-analysis level.

This qualitative study focuses on the stories of a bereaved couple living with the death of two of their children. The effect of the children's death on the parents is explored, as well as the way in which the parents live with the death of their two sons. The stories of the bereaved couple show their courage and resilience in continuing with their lives, maintaining their bond with their deceased sons and trying to make meaning of their death. As a study in practical theology and pastoral care one aim of this study was to help transform the lives of the parents for the better. In one of the chapters of the research report a study of some literature on bereavement and the death of children is presented. Dominant cultural discourses about death, bereavement, grief and mourning are discussed, as well as voices protesting against these discourses.

Individuals can be deemed weaklings within the family relations by social discourse that claims that the value of a human being is measured by his productivity and mobility. Parkinson's disease in its turn has a paralysing effect on the mobility of the physical body. The above-mentioned social discourse on the one hand and Parkinson's disease on the other hand become a dominant story that "paralyses" the individual. During research someone who has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, related how she wrote an alternative story. This person, who practices a reformed spirituality, wrote an alternative story by using Christian faith language, which, in the end, halted the marginalising effect of Parkinson's disease. In this study the concerned participant had the opportunity to share her genuine experiences and her application of Christian language of faith to manage Parkinson's disease.

This qualitative participatory action research project examined how the spiritual dimension in pastoral therapy served as a life-giving resource to facilitate healing and growth in the lives of three Christian female university students. A postmodern epistomology, social construction theory and a contextual feminist theology informed the praxis of pastoral narrative therapy. The themes of subjectivity, meaning, religious development and religious experience were the focus of this study. Narrative practices were engaged in to utilise spiritual talk in the co-construction of an alternative relational identity with the research participants. The theory of religious development is discussed from a social constructionist perspective with an accent on a personal relationship with God as central to the developmental process. The religious experiences of the participants contributed to a spiritual awareness of being connected, in a dynamic way, to God, that transformed the clients' perceptions of problems and ways of addressing problems in their lives.
