The transfer of the governing seat of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church to the capital of Ukraine, though not equal to the Church's exit to “Greater” Ukraine, but prompts an analysis of the respective possibilities of the heir to the baptism of Vladimir. This is what the Head of her Church calls her, emphasizing essentially the main motive behind the decision to move her residence. In his "Address on the Construction of the Temple of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Kiev." Lubomyr Husar stressed that the UGCC, as "part of the Kyiv root", is now free in a free state. There is now an opportunity "to return the heart of our Church to the capital city of Kyiv, from where it was born, from where it was removed by cruel circumstances."

The article analyses the activity of Ukrainian church embassies in the Russian state in the second half of the XVII – early XVIII century, based on the materials of two leading Kyiv cells – the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and the Mohyla Academy at the Kyiv Brotherhood Monastery, which had special privileges. The main goal for the Kyiv-Pechersk monasteryʼs leadership was to preserve the title of the laurel and the right stauropigy, as well as the canonical submission to the Patriarch of Constantinople at that time. The priority of Kyiv Mohyla Academy was a confirmation its status as a higher educational institute and its material support by the Russian government. To defend these rights in conditions of Russian centralism was the main task of special monastic commissioners, who performed the duties of church advocates, defenders of their monasteries. The article concludes that due to the high level of education, organizational skills and diplomatic trust of Ukrainian church messengers, they managed to achieve significant success in defending the main interests of Kyiv cells – the special status for Pechersk Monastery and the right of a higher educational institute for the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. The mission of Ukrainian ambassadors of the 60-ies of the XVII century had an important church-political significance. They had forced the leaders of Russian state to realize the rejection of Ukrainian clergy of the Moscow protectorate and detained the subordination of the Kyiv Metropolitanate for twenty years.

The article analyzes the charters of the Kyiv metropolitans, archbishops of Kyiv and Chernihiv as act materials on the history of the Greeks of Ukraine in the second half of the 17th – 18th centuries. On the basis of source study and comparative-typological analysis, their evolution and significance for the church structure of the Nizhyn Greek Brotherhood, which was under the authority of the Metropolitan of Kyiv and the Archbishop of Chernihiv up to the end of the 17 century, and from the beginning of the 18 century it was subordinate only to the Kyiv metropolitanate, is considered. From the very beginning of the Greek settlement in Nizhyn, the church authorities looked positively on their needs and provided them with all possible assistance. Evidence of this were the numerous charters, universals, orders, “oprichna letters” of the Kyiv metropolitans, archbishops of Kyiv and Chernihiv, orders of the Kyiv Orthodox Consistory Church. Most of them were published in the collection of acts by Professor A.A. Fedotov-Chekhovsky, which was published from the archives of St. Michael’s Church in Nizhyn. The collection contains Greek and Slavic texts of 24 charters of Orthodox Greek and Ukrainian hierarchs of 1680-1784, which gave the Greeks the right to establish their own church brotherhood or confirmed such a right. Textological and source analysis of A.A. Fedotov-Chekhovsky’s publication and five universals given to the Nizhyn Greeks by L. Baranovich, published by an unknown author in 1865 in the “Chernihiv Eparchial News”, and M. Storozhevsky’s materials has revealed textual and chronological differences.

The essence of opposition of the Ukrainian church elite to the Russian centralism of the Synodal period (1721-1786) and analyzes its role in defending the rights and interests of the Orthodox Church are described in the article. The formation of Synod in 1721 opened in a new period in the history of the Orthodox Church in the Russian Empire, and in Ukraine in particular. The task of this institution, established on the European model, was to unify church life and to offset its local features according to the program outlined by the Spiritual Regulation at the behest of Peter I. The activities of Synod came into sharp contradiction with the privileges of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine, which it continued to enjoy from the time of its subordination to the Moscow Patriarchate. The Metropolitan of Kyiv was deprived of its decisive status, and its superiors - the title of Metropolitan and the right of free election. The restoration of these rights became the main task for the Ukrainian church elite. Under the reign of Empress Anna Ioanivna, the clergy made a major effort to restore the economic rights of the Church, undermined by the release of Hetman Danylo Apostol in 1728, which, however, were fruitless. The reign of Empress Elizabeth began a new era in the autonomous aspirations of the Ukrainian church elite. In response to the petition of Kyiv Bishop Rafail Zaborovskyi, the Metropolitanate of Kyiv was returned to its former status, and ts head - the title of Metropolitan. At the same time, the attempts to restitute the clergy property rights, as so as the restoration of the jurisdiction of the Kyiv Metropolitanate were unsuccessful. The reign of Catherine II, whose main purpose was the complete centralization in all spheres of the Russian Empire and the secularization of church property, became the most difficult and acute period of confrontation with the Russian imperial regime. The Ukrainian church elite, headed by Metropolitan of Kyiv Arsenii Mohylianskyi, tried to use the preparation of the New Code Commission to assert its rights. This has been proven by petitions to restore the status of the Kyiv Metropolitanate and clergy rights. However, the Commission did not complete its activities and the relicts of the autonomy of the Ukrainian elites were finally buried.

Not so long ago, that is 20 years ago, when I arrived in Kyiv, the development of the Catholic Church was very relevant. The great gift that we have received is freedom of religion. Thanks to this gift, all denominations have equal rights, although not equal opportunities. But not much was known about the Catholic Church, and then, then, there were also pressing questions about whether this Church has a prospect of development, and whether it needs, for example, in Kyiv, to return two temples.

The article explores the diaries of the Kyivan Metropolitan Serapion (Alexandrovsky) as a historical source, written by him in 1804-1824. They serve as one of the main sources for studying the development of church building in Kyiv at the beginning of the nineteenth century. These diaries were studied by historians in the nineteenth century, but were only partially published. At the same time, they retain a significant amount of information related to the daily life of the city, the status of certain church monuments, church building, etc. Metropolitan paid particular attention in his diaries to the state and development of the Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery. During 1803-1822, Serapion (Alexandrovsky) (1747-1824) served as Metropolitan of Kyiv. He simultaneously performed the functions of the archimandrite of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Historians paid him little attention to him. About him wrote E. Bolkhovitinov, V. Askochenski, Ph. Ternovsky, V. Ikonnikov, D. Blazheiovsky and others. After Serapion's death, there were a few tabs of personal diaries. In them, the Metropolitan recorded his daily activities and impressions of the events that took place with him and around him. His diaries were the subject of scientific research in the nineteenth century. The greatest interest is the information concerning the state of Lavra caves in the early nineteenth century. These are the records of the Metropolitan on emergency situations and the elimination of their consequences. Emergency situations on long caves obviously did not arise. Information about the temples over the caves tells about the construction works, and only occasionally - in connection with other events or situations. The diaries also contain curious information about the caves. Metropolitan Serapion can also be considered the first tour guide in Kyiv. Lavra caves appear in diaries as one of the main locations of Kyiv as a city. And to this day they still remain unexplored. They are stored at the Institute of Manuscripts of the Central Scientific Library National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine of V.I. Vernadsky. Especially a lot of space in the recordings was given under the description of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Often in these messages are mentioned from different sides and Lavra caves. The study distinguishes three types of information about the caves: a description of their condition, a description of temples over them and information of a tangential nature. There is a special interest Metropolitan Serapion in the caves. Indicates the variability of the information recorded in his diaries. Emphasizes its religious character. At the same time, it is noted that the caves were an important geographical location of the life of the population of the city of Kyiv. The purpose of the study is to introduce new information on the history of the caves of the Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery to the scientific circulation. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, systemicity, science, concreteness, comprehensiveness and objectivity.

The article is about the study of the history of one of the unique architectural monuments of Kyiv – Stt. Peter’s and Paul’s Church (early 17th century) and its bell tower (mid-18th century). The church was only one example of the Gothic architecture in Kyiv preserved till 1930s. At the same time, it was only one Kyiv’s Rome-catholic (Dominican) temple which survived through the anti-Polish war in 1648–1654 had being transformed into Orthodox church. The author tries to trace the process of construction and reconstructions of the temple and its bell tower and understand how the buildings looked like during different periods of their existence and which transformations they underwent during 17th – 19th centuries. The author uses rare images of these buildings and descriptions of contemporary witnesses as sources. The analysis of similar buildings of the same time also helped to the author in hypothetically reconstruction of the previous views of the church and the bell tower. As a result of the research, the author concludes that originally the building of the Dominican Church of St. Nicholas (later the Orthodox Stt. Peter’s and Paul’s Church) had the form of late Gothic architecture. In the middle of the 17th century. the building was reconstructed in the forms of European Baroque and in 1744th – 1750th the temple was redesigned in the forms of Ukrainian Baroque style. Analyzing the architecture of the bell tower of Stt. Peter’s and Paul’s Church (as well as the architecture of other baroque bell towers in Kiyv) the author concludes that this building never had three tiers, contrary to popular belief among historians. The author argues that none of the churches in Podil (historian district of Kyiv near the Dnieper river) had no more than two tiers in18th century. This is confirmed by images of this district of Kyiv at that time. The author suggests that the third tier could be mistakenly called a large baroque dome of the bell tower, which burned down during the fire in 1811 and was replaced by a classicism style one.

This dual unity of the OCHS has been and remains a testament to its universal character, which is inherent in the entire Catholic Church.

"Bishop of the Kyivan Church" is a work whose purpose is to show what should be the bishop of this Church based on the documents adopted by the same bishops at various synods of 1589-1891. From this, an interesting canonical work proves that the person of the bishop can be multifaceted as the main unifying and ecclesiological factor of the Church of Kyiv. The monograph also shows what a great gap exists in the canonical science of the Kyivan Church. It will not be possible to find appropriate answers to many topical church questions (including the problem of identity), if canon law as a full-fledged scientific industry does not develop in Ukraine.

The study consists of an introduction, three chapters, ten subsections, conclusions, a list of sources and literature (80 items), appendices. The total volume of the work is 65 pages. At the present stage of the existence of the Ukrainian state, the theme of the church remains relevant. The most noteworthy are studies devoted to the diverse development of the three largest Orthodox denominations in Ukraine – the UOC, UOC-KP and UAOC in the 1990s. We have attempted to make a comprehensive and historical analysis on this topic. The study aims to analyze the main aspects of the development of the UOC, UAOC, and UOC-KP in Ukraine during the first decade of independence, based on a review of a wide range of literature and sources. In the first section of the master's thesis, the state of scientific development of the topic in historiography and the source base of the researched problems were analyzed. The second section examines the development of the Orthodox Churches during the period of statehood. The formation of a religious network began in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The third section examines the peculiarities of the development of Orthodox denominations in Ukraine and the relations between them in the first post-totalitarian decade. The All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations played a major role in one of the main interfaith advisory bodies. The conclusions of the work summarize the results of scientific research and specify its results.

Анотація:
The third part of the book investigates how the Sophia image visualizes the concept of the Hagia Sophia church as a symbol of Orthodoxy. It analyses the structure of the Wisdom image and its different iconographic details as references to constructed Orthodox churches and their mural decoration. Its title is ‘Identity’ because it also investigates what was meant by Orthodoxy in Rus—how and primarily against whom its true faith was defined—and how this idea of Orthodoxy was visualized. This analysis begins with a reconsideration of the debate between the Latins and the Orthodox over the Eucharist that led to their Schism in 1054. It discusses the relevance of anti-Latin polemics against the unleavened bread of Eucharist (azymes) for the development of Orthodox apse decoration from the eleventh century onwards and highlights the importance of the eleventh-century mural decoration of Slavonic Sophia churches at Ohrid and Kyiv in this process.
