Summary: The present article relied upon interpersonal theory ( Sullivan, 1953 ), the interpersonal circumplex model ( Leary, 1957 ), resource exchange theory ( Foa & Foa, 1974 ), and the meta-constructs of agency and communion ( Bakan, 1966 ; Wiggins, 1991 ) in the attempt to explicate a theoretical and measurement model of social support. The Support Actions Scale - Circumplex (SAS-C; Trobst, in press ) provides a circumplex measure of social support whose psychometric characteristics are comparable to the best circumplexes reported in the literature. Empirical findings using this recent measure are summarized and interpreted with respect to an interpersonal theory perspective.

Circumplex representations of data have enjoyed widespread popularity in personality and social psychological research. In this article we review the conceptual assumptions implied by circumplex representations and we discuss the limitations of traditional statistical methods for testing these assumptions. A relatively nontechnical overview of a new covariance structure modeling approach to testing circumplex structure is provided. The use of this approach is illustrated with two published data sets. The advantages and disadvantages of this approach relative to more traditional statistical approaches are discussed. The conclusion is that the covariance structure modeling approach has significant advantages in that it provides a closer conceptual match to the theoretical assumptions of circumplex representations, supplies information more directly relevant to circumplex representations and permits more precise and flexible testing of hypotheses derived from circumplex representations.

The circumplex model of affect claims that emotions can be understood in terms of their relative positions along two dimensions, namely pleasant-unpleasant and active-sleepy; and numerous studies of small samples of music have yielded data consistent with this. The present research tests whether the energy and beats per minute (proxies for the arousal dimension) and popularity as expressed in terms of sale charts (a possible proxy for the pleasantness dimension) could predict scores on six moods in 143,353 musical pieces. Findings concerning energy were clearly consistent with the circumplex model; findings for beats per minute were consistent though more equivocal; and findings concerning popularity yielded only limited support. Numerous relationships between popularity and mood were indicative of the commercial market for specific genres; and evidence demonstrated considerable differences in the mood scores between genres. In addition to the circumplex model and aesthetic responses, the findings have implications for music marketing, therapy, and everyday listening.

The principal aim of this research programme was to examine multiple components of competitive tennis players’ emotional responses to pre-performance music. To this end, four objectives were defined: First, to develop a grounded theory (Glaser & Strauss, 1967) of players’ use of music to manipulate emotional state; second, to examine the impact of altering music tempo and intensity on players’ affective and behavioural responses; third, to identify neural origins for these phenomena; and fourth, to elucidate the role of motoneuron excitability in behavioural responses observed. These objectives were realised in four interrelated studies. First, 14 players provided quantitative and qualitative interview, questionnaire, and diary data to detail their use of personally emotive music; a grounded theory and associated model were consequently developed to facilitate future research and practice. Participants used music to attain five broad emotional states, including psyched-up; this was associated with faster tempi and louder intensities (volumes). Study 2 was conceived to examine the effects of manipulating these variables on 54 players’ affective and behavioural states, using measures based on Russell’s (1980) affective circumplex and reaction times (RTs). Faster tempi elicited higher valence and arousal, loud intensity yielded higher arousal and shorter RTs; and higher arousal was associated with shorter RTs. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was utilised in Study 3 to identify neural bases for 12 participants’ emotional responses to the same music manipulations; emotion-processing, visuomotor and sensorimotor structures were activated under high-arousal conditions. Transcranial magnetic stimulation and electromyography were used in Study 4 to investigate changes in 10 participants’ corticospinal excitability as a result of listening to purposively selected music; optimised music elicited higher arousal and reduced corticospinal response latencies. The foremost contribution of this thesis is to show that music variables may be carefully selected and/or manipulated to maximise performance-facilitating emotional responses to music in tennis.

A família deve ser entendida como um sistema, cujos elementos se encontram em constante interacção entre si e com o exterior, que mantém o seu equilíbrio ao longo de um processo de desenvolvimento (Sampaio & Gameiro, 1985). A mudança é uma constante no processo contínuo de construção de um sistema, sendo que o que precede a esta transição é um momento de crise que provoca stress, do qual o sistema procura recuperar (Celani, 2012). Qualquer família, seja ela adoptiva ou não, depara-se com momentos de crise com os quais tem de se reorganizar. Contudo, as famílias adoptivas possuem algumas especificidades decorrentes do processo de adopção que poderão provocar momentos de grande crise. Deste modo, o objectivo do presente estudo será compreender o impacto da adopção no seio de uma família, procurando obter um olhar sobre o funcionamento familiar nas famílias adoptivas. No sentido de dar resposta à finalidade deste estudo, desenvolveu-se uma investigação que utilizou uma metodologia qualitativa, utilizando como instrumento de recolha de dados uma entrevista semi-estruturada. Assim, a amostra do estudo é constituída por seis famílias adoptivas, sendo que as entrevistas foram feitas apenas às mães, excepto uma das entrevistas que foi feita ao casal em conjunto. Os participantes tinham idades compreendidas entre os 38 e os 60 anos (M = 49 anos), sendo que todos pertencem ao Distrito de Lisboa. A análise dos resultados permitiu verificar que a adopção, e todos os períodos passados por uma família adoptiva, parecem contribuir para algumas alterações ao nível do funcionamento familiar. A variável que parece ter mais influência na existência de um funcionamento familiar mais problemático é o motivo da adopção, sendo que as famílias cujos motivos de adopção se prendiam com questões de infertilidade ou dificuldades em engravidar apresentam níveis de funcionamento familiar mais desequilibrados.
The family should be understood as a system, whose elements are in constant interaction among themselves and with the outside, which keeps its balance throughout a developmental process (Sampaio & Gameiro, 1985). Change is a constant in the continuous process of building a system, and what precedes this transition is a time of crisis that causes stress, of which the system seeks to recover (Celani, 2012). Any family, whether adoptive or not, faces a crisis with which they have to reorganize. However, adoptive families have some specificities resulting from the adoption process that may cause moments of great crisis. Thus, the aim of this study is to understand the impact of adoption within a family, trying to get a look at family functioning in adoptive families. In order to meet the purpose of this study, a research was developed utilizing a qualitative methodology, using as an instrument of data collection a semi-structured interview. The study sample consists of six adoptive families. Only the mothers were interviewed, except in one of the interviews that was made to the couple. Participants were aged between 38 and 60 years (M = 49 years), all of which belong to the District of Lisbon. The analysis of the results has shown that the adoption, and all the hardships experienced by an adoptive family, appears to contribute to some changes to the level of family functioning. The variable that seems to have more influence on the existence of a more problematic family functioning is the purpose of adoption, such that the adoption within families whose motives were attached with issues of infertility or difficulty in conceiving present more unbalanced levels of family functioning.

O objectivo deste estudo é tentar perceber como é o funcionamento familiar, e comparar as famílias com filhos adolescentes que tenham Ideação Suicida, e que estejam em tratamento. O estudo é constituído por 3 famílias, (jovem com I.S, mãe e pai), que estão em acompanhamento psicológico nos hospitais da cidade de Lisboa. A recolha de dados foi feita através de entrevistas. As entrevistas foram feitas separadamente para se ter acesso a mais informação e deixar cada participante mais à vontade. Formando-se assim um triângulo de comparação entre filho, pai, mãe. Para se perceber o funcionamento nestas famílias, a análise foi feita com base no Modelo Circumplexo dos Sistemas conjugais e familiares (Olson, 2000), que é particularmente útil para diagnósticos relacionais focando-se em três dimensões essenciais à compreensão do funcionamento familiar. As três dimensões são: a coesão familiar, a flexibilidade familiar e a comunicação familiar. Identificando - se assim se há comprometimentos ao nível destas dimensões nestas famílias. Não se consegue tirar destes 3 casos uma conclusão de que as famílias com comunicação negativa vão ser desagregadas ou aglutinas, mas percebe -se que a comunicação quando falha interfere mais na coesão do que na flexibilidade.
The aim of this study is to analyse the functioning in families with adolescents with suicidal ideation who are receiving psychological treatment and to compare those families. 3 families participated in this study (an adolescent with suicidal ideation, mother, and father), all of whom are receiving psychotherapy at different hospitals in Lisbon. The interviews were conducted separately so as to have access to more information and put each interviewee at ease, thereby creating a comparison triangle between adolescent, father, and mother. In order to better understand how the families function, an analysis based on the Circumplex Model of Marital and Family Systems (Olson, 2000), was made. The aforementioned model, which focuses on three essential dimentions – family cohesion, family flexibility, family communication - for the comprehension of the family, is particularly useful for relational diagnoses. We sought to identify whether there were problems in the families in regards to the three dimensions mentioned above. We were not able to conclude that families with negative communication are going to be disaggregated, but could conclude that lack of communication has more impact on cohesion than flexibility

The fields of family studies and child development share many similar concepts, yet the relationship between the two is rarely tested. This study is an exploratory examination of the conceptual similarities between the Circumplex Model of Family Functioning (Olson, Sprenkle, & Russell, 1979) and the Maccoby and Martin (1983) model of parenting typologies. Adaptability in the Olson model is conceptually similar to the demandingness/control dimension described by Maccoby and Martin, while cohesion is conceptually similar to the warmth-hostility dimension. It was hypothesized that each parenting type would exhibit specific family functioning styles. Participants were recruited through ten area day care centers. Thirty-five mothers and twenty-four fathers participated. Self-report and observational methods were used. Parents were administered FACES III and the PARI at group meetings at the respective centers. Seventeen families agreed to participate in an at-home session, where two observational game-tasks, the Guess the Rules game to measure adaptability and the Kvebaek Family Sculpture Task to measure cohesion, were completed. Analysis of variance, correlation coefficients, and chi-square statistics were used to test the hypothesized relationships. Two anomalous findings occurred: almost half the parents described their families as chaotic and over half the parents were typed as uninvolved. These findings influenced the results. The results suggest some support for the conceptual similarities between the models. Correlations between the FACES and PARI subscales were low but significant, suggesting adaptability and authoritarian control, as well as cohesion and hostility-rejection are related. ANOVA results suggested that the parenting group means for the FACES subscale scores were significantly different, and in directions that support the model. Parents who described themselves as permissive perceived themselves as the most adaptable and parents who perceived themselves as uninvolved perceived their families as the least cohesive.

Abstract A working environment which elicits positive emotions in employees is vital for employee retention, engagement and productivity. Wearable sensors provide the means to objectively measure the emotional responses of employees in the workplace in real-time. The study aim was to perform a preliminary investigation into the validity of two multimodal systems to classify employee’s emotional responses to positive, neutral or negative video stimuli: (1) using wearable electroencephalography (EEG) in combination with video-based facial expression analysis (FEA), and (2) using a wearable galvanic skin response (GSR) device in combination with video-based FEA. Five office employees each watched three short video clips at three time points during their regular work shifts while wearing EEG sensors on the forehead and GSR sensors on the middle and index fingers of their non-dominant hand with their face in view of a webcam. Russel’s circumplex model of affect was used to determine participant’s emotional responses to the video clips. The GSR device showed greater accuracy than the EEG device at detecting arousal responses to the video stimuli, with agreement, precision, and recall values of 87%, 100% and 80%, respectively, compared to 53%, 62%, and 80% for the EEG device. The FEA/EEG and FEA/GSR circumplex models were both able to accurately detect positive emotions elicited from video stimuli with levels of agreement and recall greater than 73%. Precision for the FEA/EEG model to detect positive stimuli was lower due to misclassification of 40% of both negative and neutral stimuli as positive. Precision values for both circumplex models were very low for detecting negative emotions. The results suggest that the EEG and GSR devices may be capable of detecting arousal when used alone, and detecting positive emotions when used in combination with video-based FEA in real-time in the workplace.
