Summary: The present article relied upon interpersonal theory ( Sullivan, 1953 ), the interpersonal circumplex model ( Leary, 1957 ), resource exchange theory ( Foa & Foa, 1974 ), and the meta-constructs of agency and communion ( Bakan, 1966 ; Wiggins, 1991 ) in the attempt to explicate a theoretical and measurement model of social support. The Support Actions Scale - Circumplex (SAS-C; Trobst, in press ) provides a circumplex measure of social support whose psychometric characteristics are comparable to the best circumplexes reported in the literature. Empirical findings using this recent measure are summarized and interpreted with respect to an interpersonal theory perspective.

Circumplex representations of data have enjoyed widespread popularity in personality and social psychological research. In this article we review the conceptual assumptions implied by circumplex representations and we discuss the limitations of traditional statistical methods for testing these assumptions. A relatively nontechnical overview of a new covariance structure modeling approach to testing circumplex structure is provided. The use of this approach is illustrated with two published data sets. The advantages and disadvantages of this approach relative to more traditional statistical approaches are discussed. The conclusion is that the covariance structure modeling approach has significant advantages in that it provides a closer conceptual match to the theoretical assumptions of circumplex representations, supplies information more directly relevant to circumplex representations and permits more precise and flexible testing of hypotheses derived from circumplex representations.

The circumplex model of affect claims that emotions can be understood in terms of their relative positions along two dimensions, namely pleasant-unpleasant and active-sleepy; and numerous studies of small samples of music have yielded data consistent with this. The present research tests whether the energy and beats per minute (proxies for the arousal dimension) and popularity as expressed in terms of sale charts (a possible proxy for the pleasantness dimension) could predict scores on six moods in 143,353 musical pieces. Findings concerning energy were clearly consistent with the circumplex model; findings for beats per minute were consistent though more equivocal; and findings concerning popularity yielded only limited support. Numerous relationships between popularity and mood were indicative of the commercial market for specific genres; and evidence demonstrated considerable differences in the mood scores between genres. In addition to the circumplex model and aesthetic responses, the findings have implications for music marketing, therapy, and everyday listening.

Summary: Social competence is an alluring, yet elusive, construct. The purpose of this article is to examine social competence in relation to a model of interpersonal behavior, the interpersonal circumplex. The circumplex can serve as descriptive taxonomy for social competence constructs; it also gives rise to a set of analytic methods useful for validating particular measures and analyzing item characteristics. The value of the approach was demonstrated in studies done on an array of self-report measures. The results suggested that most social competency measures can be reconceptualized as some blend of Dominance, Extraversion, and Friendliness. When linked to interpersonal theory, the circumplex model provides an integrative framework for understanding social competence, and a springboard for generating and testing relevant hypotheses.

This study were preformed for two purposes. The first is to develop a Korean vocational interest inventory based on Holland theory(short version) and second is to investigate of Holland's hypotheses(circular order and circumplex). With a sample of 149 high school students(male 58, female 91) and 224 college students(male 132, female 92), the main results were as follows. First, the scale which developed as 72 items in this study has shown acceptable reliabilities and construct validities, that is, this short form interest inventory could be used to verify student's vocational interest in conjunction with existing inventories. Second, the radnomization test using RANDALL(Tracey, 1997) has shown that the circular order hypothesis were supported. Third, in the results of confirmatory factor analysis, the modle that Holland's circumplex hypothesis was not adapted, has had better fit(TLI, RMSEA) than the model which Holland's circumplex hypothesis was adapted. Forth, the results of MDS showed the RIASEC interest types could be explained well through Sociaility and Confirmity of Hogan(1983). In summary, Holland's circular order hypothesis was supported but the circumplex hypothesis was not supported to Korean student's data. Finally, the implications and limitations were discussed.

Circumplex of Identity Formation Modes: Theoretical Assumptions and Empirical Verification The article presents theoretical assumptions and summarizes the results of research on the Circumplex of Identity Formation Modes. The model was created as an attempt to synthesize knowledge on identity formation gathered in the stream of research initiated by James E. Marcia (1966), based on the Erik H. Erikson’s (1959) theory of psychosocial development. In the model: (1) the key concept is the identity formation mode, (2) traditional categories of exploration and commitment have been redefined and used as basic axes to distinguish eight identity formation modes, between which relationships are precisely defined in accordance with the rules of the circumplex model, (3) due to redefinition of exploration and commitment, the model can be used in research on personal identity in various developmental periods, and (4) the place of identity variables in the personality structure has been precisely defined. Circumplex of Identity Formation Modes was introduced to international literature and research on its verification and usefulness was conducted (Cieciuch, Topolewska, 2017; Topolewska, Cieciuch, 2017; Topolewska-Siedzik, Cieciuch, 2018, 2019; Topolewska-Siedzik, Cieciuch, Strus, 2019).

Se quiere emular las emociones porque psicólogos y neurocientíficos han demostrado que son indispensables en el proceso de toma de decisiones, y esta es la tarea de todo controlador. Se exponen cuatro campos de aplicación para esta invención, en los cuales la autonomía y la adaptación son esenciales. Además, ocho modelos computacionales de las emociones son referenciados, dado que involucran la cognición; se concluye que es necesario hacer ajustes para incluir uno de ellos en una estrategia de control. Por esto se formula, como aporte del artículo, el uso del modelo circumplejo del afecto; este etiqueta a la combinación de dos variables como una emoción humana.Palabras Clave:Modelos de las emociones humanas, los procesos de decisión, Circumplejo modelo de afecto, control autónomo. AbstractIn this paper we propose the design of a new control strategy for dynamic systems based on human emotions. Since psychologists and neuroscientists have demonstrated that emotions are indispensable in the Decision-Making-Process, and decision-making is the work of every controller, it is our desire to emulate emotions in the systems design. Here we deal with four areas of application for this invention in which autonomy and adaptability are essential. As well, eight emotion computational models are referenced. Given that these involve cognition, it is concluded as necessary to make adjustments to include one of these in a control strategy. For this reason, this article formulates the use of the Circumplex Model of Affect, a model which labels a human emotion as a variable. This study investigated the construct (structural) validity of Holland’s circumplex model of vocational personality types in Africa. Data were obtained on the general occupational themes of the Strong Interest Inventory for 28 countries. These countries were classified into three different geographic regions (Eastern Africa, Southern Africa, and Western Africa). The randomization test and circumplex covariance structure modeling were used to investigate the fit of Holland’s circumplex model across these regions. Results provide preliminary evidence for the generalizability of Holland’s model in the African context. Inspection of the angular locations of the six vocational personality types in two-dimensional space indicated slight disordering of the types in the Eastern Africa region and the correct ordering of the types in the Southern and Western African regions. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Assessment of interpersonal dispositions (e.g., traits, problems) commonly employs self- and informant-report measures that conform to the two-dimensional interpersonal circumplex (IPC) model. Here, we adopted the IPC and interpersonal theory as a framework for mapping the universe of content of interpersonal influence. Although there are existing measures of influence tactics used in influence research, this literature is divided among disciplines with varying construct definitions and no unifying theory. Here, we define interpersonal influence as the conscious maneuvering of one’s behavior to engender desired responses from others in interpersonal situations. The current article details the construction and validation of the Interpersonal Influence Tactics Circumplex (IIT-C) Scales in two samples ( Ns = 862, 608). The 64-item IIT-C assesses a comprehensive taxonomy of interpersonal influence tactics conforming to the structure of the IPC. Circumplex structure of the IIT-C was confirmed and replicated. Using the structural summary method for circumplex data, associations with other IPC measures, existing measures of influence, normal personality traits, and pathological personality traits supported the validity of IIT-C scores. The IIT-C assesses a theoretically based and empirically derived set of interpersonal influence tactics and provides a common language for integrating distinct streams of influence research by conforming to the IPC.

Scales to assess the eight octants and two axes of the interpersonal circumplex (IPC) using items from the revised NEO Personality Inventory were introduced by Traupman et al. Item changes in the revised and renormed third edition of the NEO instrument (NEO-PI-3) have affected item content in all eight octant scales, underscoring the need to reexamine the IPC scales. The current study examines the circumplex structure of the revised octant scales in the NEO-PI-3 and their correlations with the Dominance and Warmth scales of the Personality Assessment Inventory in 568 undergraduate students. The data show perfect fit to circumplex structure, suggesting equivalent or better assessment of the IPC with the NEO-PI-3 octant scales. Convergence of the eight octants with the Personality Assessment Inventory interpersonal scales further supports their saturation with interpersonal content and appropriate location within the IPC.

The Inventory of Interpersonal Problems 32 (IIP-32; Horowitz, Aiden, Wiggins, & Pincus, 2000) is a brief, 32-item, self-report questionnaire used to screen for interpersonal problems. While studies of the IIP-32's psychometric properties have been conducted in other nations, and studies have examined the psychometric properties of the IIP-32's circumplex structure, no studies have examined the factor-analytic structure in the United States since the original standardization sample. The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the IIP-32 in American college women for the first time and explore its structural validity as a circumplex measure and its concurrent validity with measures of attachment. The current study found that internal consistency estimates and interscale correlations were generally high and confirmed the proposed circumplex structure. In addition, concurrent validity was evidenced by confirming theorized relations between attachment and the IIP-32 subscales. However, IIP-32 subscales were limited with regard to divergent validity.

Summary: Participants (n = 168) rated acquaintances' personality using the NEO Personality Inventory - Revised (NEO-PI-R; Peer Rating Form) and the Impact Message Inventory (IMI) to examine the relationship between the interpersonal circumplex and Big Five models of personality. Results support the predicted finding that the NEO scales of Extraversion and Agreeableness load most strongly on the circumplex regions of Friendly-Dominance and Friendly-Submissiveness, respectively. Unexpectedly, the NEO domains of Neuroticism, Conscientiousness and Openness (to a lesser extent) also show projections onto circular structure.

The structure and change of the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems in the German Circumplex version (IIP-D; Horowitz, Strauss, & Kordy, 2000 ) were examined in a study of 393 Swiss psychotherapy outpatients. Replicating results by Vittengl, Clark, and Jarret (2003) , interpersonal problems showed a three-factor structure (Interpersonal Distress, Love, and Dominance), with the latter two factors approximating a circumplex, both before and after therapy. Interpersonal Distress, Love, and Dominance changed with therapy. Structural stability, patterns of change, as well as intercultural generalizability of IIP assessments are discussed.

Current literature suggests that family involvement has an impact on firm innovativeness, but it is not able to explain in which conditions. Adopting a curvilinear model, (Olson’s circumplex model of family) this research demonstrates that the family's cohesion and flexibility levels play a significant role in the relationship between family involvement and firm innovation propensity.This paper also provides evidence for the theory that previous research limitations are due to the fact that they posit a linear relationship between family involvement and innovativeness. Instead, the Circumplex curvilinear model shows a better fit for explaining the family involvement impact on innovation propensity.

Summary: Eight interpersonal scales, developed within the Italian lexical context, were tested with respect to different kinds of validity. The observed continuum of interpersonal attributes corresponded to, in terms of content, Wiggins' circumplex (substantive validity). Several tests, performed across different subsamples, showed that the scales conformed to circumplex properties (structural integrity). Correlational and regression results indicated some concurrent validity with the IASR-B5, CPS, and 16 PF measures of personality dimensions. The results demonstrate the validity of the developed scales, thereby suggesting their potential utility for measuring the interpersonal dimensions of Dominance and Love/Nurturance in the Italian language.

Using a grounded theory method of inquiry, this research developed a question-based framework that integrates the WH questions (what, why, when, where, who, and how) with knowledge types (structural, declarative, and procedural) and context (objective and subjective). From this integration, 3 different styles of communication (directional, analytical, and relational) and 6 associated modes of communication (procedure, action, concept, theory, metaphor, and story) emerged. These styles and modes of communication are organized around a circumplex structure, which is further dimensionalized by the WH questions. This framework is referred to as the Question Wheel of Communication, which reflects the circumplex, or circular, ordering of questions.

Zusammenfassung. Der interpersonale Circumplex (IPC) ist eines der am besten erforschten und ausgearbeiteten Modelle zur Beschreibung und Messung von Persönlichkeit. Die hier vorgestellte Interpersonale Adjektivliste (IAL) bildet eine empirische Umsetzung des theoretischen IPC-Konzeptes zur Messung individueller Unterschiede im interpersonalen Stil. In vier Studien (N1 = 216, N2 = 202, N3 = 353, N41 = 334 & N42 = 314) wurden acht Skalen mit jeweils acht Adjektivmarkern konstruiert, mit exploratorischen und konfirmatorischen Analysen auf ihre Circumplex-Struktur geprüft sowie an den revidierten deutschen und englischen Interpersonalen Adjektiv Skalen (IAS-R[dt.]; Ostendorf, 2001 ; IAS-R; Wiggins, Trapnell & Phillips, 1988 ) validiert. Ihre strukturelle und psychometrische Güte und bedeutsame konvergente und divergente Beziehungen weisen die IAL als verbessertes Parallelinstrument der IAS-R(dt.) aus.

Zusammenfassung. Übermäßige Communion (UC) ist durch Überinvolvierung in die Probleme anderer Menschen und Vernachlässigung eigener Bedürfnisse zu Gunsten der Bedürfnisse anderer gekennzeichnet. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde die UC-Skala von Helgeson und Fritz (1998) ins Deutsche übertragen und in drei Studien validiert. Die deutsche UC-Skala war zur Originalskala konvergent und vergleichbar konsistent, jedoch faktoriell komplexer. In der interpersonalen Konstruktanalyse wurde die vorherrschende thematische Qualität der UC-Skala im interpersonalen Eigenschafts- und Problem-Circumplex als submissiv-freundlich ausgewiesen. Überinvolvierung in die Probleme anderer und Vernachlässigung eigener Bedürfnisse ließen sich auf Item-Ebene im interpersonalen Eigenschafts-Circumplex differenzieren. Das Fünf-Faktoren-Modell klärte 22% der UC-Skalenvarianz auf und hing differenziell mit Überinvolvierung und Vernachlässigung eigener Bedürfnisse zusammen.

The relationship between interpersonal distress and psychological health was investigated using a sample of 185 college undergraduates. Subjects completed the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (a measure of interpersonal distress), the Personal Orientation Inventory (a measure of self-actualization), and the Miller Social Intimacy Scale (a measure of interpersonal closeness). The mean of scores on the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems was compared with the mean of the clinical sample reported in 1988 by Horowitz, et al. The measures of psychological health were correlated with the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems total and with the octant scales of the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems-Circumplex version. The measures were also projected onto the circumplex to summarize their interpersonal connotations.

Zusammenfassung. In der vorliegenden Studie wird die Konstruktion eines Fragebogens zur Erfassung von interpersonalen Persönlichkeitseigenschaften mittels berufsbezogener Verhaltensweisen auf der Grundlage des Interpersonalen Circumplexes dargestellt. Der Interpersonale Circumplex (IPC) gilt als adäquates Modell zur Abbildung von Persönlichkeitseigenschaften, die sich auf zwischenmenschliches Verhalten beziehen. Bisher wurde der IPC zwar in verschiedenen Anwendungsfeldern untersucht, aber noch nicht in den organisationspsychologischen Kontext übertragen. Im Rahmen einer circumplexorientierten Reanalyse von Daten, deren Ursprung im Fünf-Faktoren-Modell der Persönlichkeit liegt, wird aufgezeigt, dass eine Operationalisierung des IPC anhand von berufsbezogenen Verhaltensweisen (Acts) möglich ist. Hierzu wird zum einen auf konzeptionelle Expertenbeurteilungen (N = 10, davon 4 je Act) sowie auf empirische Ergebnisse bei einer gemischt studentisch-beruflichen Stichprobe (N = 278) zurückgegriffen. Zum anderen wird die strukturelle Konstruktvalidierung anhand einer studentischen Stichprobe (N = 241), vorrangig Wirtschaftswissenschaftlern, demonstriert. Der resultierende Fragebogen soll in der Personalpsychologie als sozial und ökologisch valide Alternative zum klassischen Messverfahren, den revidierten Interpersonellen Adjektivskalen, Verwendung finden.
