Повний текст джерелаThe purpose of this study was to examine the effect of presentation mode on community college students' ratings of a choral performance and self-perceived level of engagement with the music controlling for age, gender, and previous musical training. The following research questions were explored: (a) what effect, if any, does presentation mode have on participants' ratings of the quality of a choral performance; (b) what effect,if any, does participants' age, gender, or previous musical training have on participants' ratings of the quality of a choral performance; (c) what effect, if any, does presentation mode have on participants' ratings of their engagement with the music during a choral performance; (d) what effect, if any, does participants' age, gender, or previous musical training have on participants' ratings of their engagement with the music during a choral performance; (e) why do participants rate the quality of a choral performance of one presentation mode higher than others, if at all; and (f) why do different presentation modes make participants feel more or less engaged with the music, if at all. Community college students (N = 71) enrolled in four music appreciation courses at two community colleges rated their perceptions of the performance quality and their level of engagement with the music on four-point Likert-type scale for three presentation modes. Participants provided written responses explaining their ratings. Quality and engagement ratings were analyzed using a three-way repeated measures MANCOV A controlling for age, gender, and years of training. Results indicated that presentation mode was a significant predictor of participants' ratings of quality (p < .001) and level of engagement (p < .001). There was a significant within-subjects effect (p < .05) for age and quality, and between-subjects effect (p < .05) for years of training and engagement. Qualitative data were analyzed, coded, and themes were identified. Themes included focus of attention, environmental factors, technology, and preference affected perceptions of quality. Technology and perception of performance quality affected level of engagement. It was concluded that the presentation mode used to present a listening experience to community college students had a significant effect on students' perceptions of performance quality and level of engagement with music during a listening experience. Moreover, students' perceptions of quality and engagement were most often related to a variety of factors the influenced their focus of attention during the listening experience.

Повний текст джерелаThis study comprises the investigation of self-introduction e-mail messages sent by individuals who want to take part in two group-discussion lists created for the purpose of practicing English and addressing issues related to this particular language. By focusing on a many-to-many communication environment, this study aims at: (a) presenting the classic and contemporary concepts of community, and discussing which conceptual features allow the establishment of online communities; (b) confronting the interaction that emerges from face-to-face and electronic communication contexts; (c) analyzing whether data conveyed in self-introduction messages depict the engagement between the writer and the text produced as well as the role performed by the writer in the interaction; and (d) identifying which attributes of the personal and social data put across indicate the senders social identity. As for the theoretical foundations, the discussion about online communities includes a description of group-discussion lists both in terms of their internal organization and of the interactive behavior of their members. The analysis of the self-introduction e-mail messages is based on the notion of roles performed in interaction and on the concept of social identity construction (Goffman, 1959, 1963, 1967). The constitution of the users identity is inspected through the investigation of some specific lexical itens (I, me, we, and my), and their collocation. The outcomes of this investigation suggest that group-discussion lists may be conceived of a group of people who, by sharing common interest. Furthermore, the senders identity is grounded on the personal and social information provided by his/her self-introduction discourse which also reveals his/her social biography.

Since APRANET, the predecessor of global internet, came into being during the 1960s, the advancements of networking technologies over the decades have created online communities such as MUDs, BBS, and newsgroups that allow users in different locations to exchange messages and share information. Nowadays, there are even wiki websites that invite all users to edit any page or to create new pages, and Yahoo! Answers, a community-driven knowledge market website where users can submit their questions and answer questions asked by other users. With such a variety of digital communities, individuals choose their own favorites to interact with others. Especially in recent years, with personal blogs, online photo albums, and micro-blogging taking the lead, more personalized features such as the display picture and user name, deep profiling, avatar and even personal page, are integrated into online discussion forums for individual users to freely present themselves. On the other hand, there are Wikipedia and MIT OpenCourseWare, both web-base collaborative projects that invite the collaboration and contributions of users identifying with their founding goals. Based on these observations, this thesis takes personal and social perceive into account. The research adopted self-presentation and social identity as the factors that can affect community member’s participation, commitment, and knowledge contribution in the online communities. As hypothesized, community member’s participation can motivates their commitment and knowledge contribution to the community. Furthermore, community member''s identification with the online communities fosters their participation and commitment while community member’s self-presentation, reflecting the degree of their participation and commitment though, has no direct relation in making any knowledge contribution to online communities.

This thesis wishes to demonstrate in how far faith in the Trinity as community of Father, Son and Holy Spirit can contribute to a fulfilling human communal life on social networking sites. In conversation with the three theologians Jürgen Moltmann, Leonardo Boff and Gisbert Greshake, a concept of the Social Trinity and its implications on human communal life is being elaborated. In a second part, the new possibilities and the gravest shortcomings of human interactions on Facebook are depicted. Finally, it is asked, in how far the findings of the theological discussion can be fructified in the specific context of social networking sites. In three different aspects it will be elaborated, in which the believer can find, through his or her incorporation into the godly community, a new perspective for his social context and a helpful resource to counter the shortcomings of human communal life on social networking sites.
