OBJECTIVES/SPECIFIC AIMS: The 2 primary objectives were to (i) insure that Scholars can effectively communicate the translational impact of their research to a lay audience and (ii) assess the benefits and efficacy of having community, as well as faculty members, judge the translational impact of KL2 Scholar’s poster presentations. An explicit secondary goal was to further the engagement of community members in CTSI-sponsored translational research. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: CTSI’s Education, Community Engagement, Discovery and Translation, and Translational Workforce Development Cores created the translational impact questions and evaluation sheets. The Community Engagement and Office of Discovery and Translation recruited community judges from their respective networks and they were assigned to relevant studies. Scholars were provided with the judges scoring template in advance. After the Research Poster Session, the KL2 Scholars evaluated the quality of their presentations and the impact of having feedback from Community Judges. The Community Judges evaluated their perceived “added value” to the research presentations and their interactions with the Scholars. Both Scholars and judges completed evaluations of the poster presentation and judging process, performed on a 5-point Likert scale. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: KL2 Scholars felt that the community impact judges provided valuable feedback on their research (3.8/5) and were satisfied overall with the poster session (3.4/5). In evaluating their own presentations, Scholars tended to rate themselves higher (4.2–4.6/5) on the clarity of their translational impact presentations than the community judges rated the Scholars (4.1–4.2/5). Scholars also rated themselves somewhat higher in the quality of their dealing with any ethical issues and their dissemination plan (4.0/5) than the community judges (3.8/5). Judges were very positive and felt they brought value to the experience (4.2–4.4/5). DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: Community judges added qualitative value to the Scholar presentations based on the Scholar and community judge evaluations and based on comparison based on prior year poster sessions. Documenting the degree of impact of the combination of this proscribed poster format and community-judging process awaits future assessment of Scholar presentations before and after the next annual poster presentation.

This paper examines trends in potential 'primary care' presentations at emergency departments (ED), comparing these with other ED presentations and to primary care attendances in the community. The study draws on EDIS data (Emergency Department Information System), which, at December 2005, covered 76% of attendances in New South Wales, and from Medicare Australia MBS data. Annual counts of potential primary care presentations to EDs are compared with those of other ED presentations and to primary care presentations in the community. Changes in the percentage of ED presentations that are potentially for primary care are examined, as are changes in the percentage of total primary care presentations seen in EDs. Trends in age standardised presentation rates are also calculated for each of the three series. Primary care presentations at EDs increased marginally in the period under consideration, as did primary care presentations in the community. There was a substantial increase in other ED presentations. The proportion of ED presentations potentially for primary care decreased over the period. The proportion of primary care presentations seen in EDs and the proportion seen in the community changed little. Decline in the proportion of potential primary care presentations to EDs may have been impacted by new guidelines for the application of triage categories in 2001. However, trends over time do not show acute alterations and they continue to hold for the subsequent period after introduction of new guidelines. Primary care presentations at EDs are not responsible for recent changes to ED overcrowding in New South Wales, at least not for hospitals covered in the EDIS database. Future research might consider more specific trends in rural EDs.

Abstract The SHARE Network (Supporting Healthy Aging Resources & Education) is a Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program serving older adults in a large urban, underserved community. For 4 years, one objective of the SHARE Network has been to increase health literacy while fostering positive change in older adults through “Healthy Aging” presentations. Led by geriatrics subject experts, these presentations cover a wide range of important health topics for older adults at a variety of community-based organization (CBO) partner locations. Rapid Cycle Quality Improvement (RCQI) efforts to enhance this programming include surveying audience members after a presentation, then sharing results with CBO partners at monthly meetings to review popular topics, participant demographics, quality of presentations, suggestions for improvement, etc. These recurring RCQI meetings have proven critical to maintaining a robust healthy aging curriculum and network engagement across a variety of organizations and interests. Analysis of participant survey data demonstrates the strength of QI efforts and includes a qualitative analysis of open-ended responses. To date, 153 presentations have been held with 2,704 attendees and 1,470 respondents, 86.3% of whom planned to make a health change after attending the presentation. Qualitative analysis of these behavior change plans reveals that 82.6% are proactive behaviors versus restrictive behaviors, and that diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes are most common. This program, and its RCQI approach, serves as a successful model for aligning the educational objectives and priorities of network partners, while ensuring relevancy and cultural competency in promoting positive healthy behaviors in the older adult community.

AbstractOver 80% of CTSA programs have a community advisory board (CAB). Little is known about how research discussed with CABs aligns with community priorities (bidirectionality). This program evaluation assessed researcher presentations from 2014 to 2018 to the CABs linked to our CTSA at all three sites (Minnesota, Arizona, and Florida) for relevance to local community needs identified in 2013 and/or 2016. From content analysis, of 65 presentations total, 41 (63%) addressed ≥1 local health needs (47% Minnesota, 60% Florida, and 80% Arizona). Cross-cutting topics were cancer/cancer prevention (physical activity/obesity/nutrition) and mental health. Results could help to prioritize health outcomes of community-engaged research efforts.

Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of community-based case management in reducing hospital admissions for older people. Methods Five databases were searched from inception to March 2018. Trials were included if: (1) participants were community-dwelling adults aged ≥65 years; (2) intervention was community-based case management for ≥3 months; (3) outcomes related to hospital admissions; and (4) the design included a control group. The quality of evidence was independently assessed by two reviewers using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale and the Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. Data were analysed descriptively and using meta-analyses where possible. Results Nine trials (n=5468 participants) were included in the analysis. Meta-analysis found community-based case management did not reduce hospital admissions (standard mean difference –0.09; 95% confidence interval (CI) –0.27, 0.10), but did reduce emergency department (ED) presentations (mean difference –0.26; 95% CI –0.51, –0.01). Conclusion Community-based case management intervention may be effective in reducing ED presentations for older people. What is known about the topic? Although community-based case management is common in Australia, little is known about its effectiveness in reducing healthcare utilisation for community-dwelling older people. What does this paper add? The results indicate that community-based case management may decrease the number of ED presentations among older people. What are the implications for practitioners? Patients with high ED presentation rates may benefit from community-based case management to reduce the number of unnecessary ED presentations.

When users present themselves in a social networking community, they are called on to create profiles that are representative and portray a desired image. In this paper, we examine the profile creation process. We explore what self-presentations are desired and how these presentations are created by having people rate their profile along personality dimensions after completing each attribute field in a mock social network-like profile. Findings indicate that people hope to convey personality traits through their online profiles and that they are able to create profiles they feel match their desired self-presentation. Free-form profile attributes best enable desired self presentations of traits, and only a few of these attributes are needed for sufficient self presentation online.

Social identity is a key construct to understand online community life. While existing online identity studies present a relatively static conception of identity, grounded in user profiles and other personal information, in this paper the authors investigate more dynamic aspects of identity, grounded in patterns of social interaction in Facebook community life, drawing on social science research on identity theory and social identity theory. The authors examine the tensions experienced by people between assimilation and differentiation with respect to group identities and role identities. The study provides a framework for understanding how users construct self-presentations in different online social interactions, actively managing identity, rather than merely declaring it in a relatively static profile. The authors speculate on how social computing environments could more effectively support identity presentation.

Artificial Intelligence for Engineering Design, Analysis and Manufacturing has accomplished a lot, but we still have far to go in building a community. I was reminded of this earlier this year when I attended a workshop on a topic within the scope of AI EDAM's coverage. In addition to engineers and educators, workshop speakers included a linguist studying languages used by professionals, an ethnographer studying CAD users and a psychologist studying innovation. All three social scientists started their presentations essentially the same way:

Background: Patient and community engagement in under-resourced communities is a key issue for precision medicine research. We report proceedings from a community-academic partnered conference in Los Angeles to promote community understanding of precision medicine and generate engagement recommendations. Methods: Planning group review of planning, presentations, and audience discussions from facilitator notes and participant survey data from a one-day conference.Findings: Community-academic planning broadened community participation and presentations. More than 80% of survey participants indicated they would participate in the national precision medicine initiative, and most were willing to share diverse sources of data. Discussions identified trust concerns related to historical research abuses, data privacy, potential effects of findings on health care, personal safety, research procedures, the time-frame for benefit, and confusion about different initiatives. Concerns were balanced by belief in science to improve health. Recommendations included a community partnered participatory approach with support for local community and academic teams to engage stakeholders with written/online resources and partnered workgroups addressing key concerns. Conclusion: Conference participants expressed high willingness to participate in precision medicine studies, but discussions highlighted trust and transparency issues and suggested community partnered research with local capacity building.Ethn Dis. 2018:28(Suppl 2):503-510; doi:10.18865/ed.28.S2.503.

ObjectivesTo identify the availability and variability of learning opportunities through patient presentations on an acute medical placement at a teaching hospital.DesignA prospective study evaluating all acute admissions to the Acute Medical Unit over 14 days (336 hours). Clinical presentations and the day and time of admission were recorded and compared with the learning outcomes specified in the medical school curriculum.SettingAn Acute Medical Unit at a London teaching hospital.Outcomes(1) Number of clinical presentations to the Acute Medical Unit over 14 days and (2) differences between the availability and variation of admissions and presentations between in-hours and out-of-hours.ResultsThere were 359 admissions, representing 1318 presentations. Of those presentations, 76.6% were admitted out-of-hours and 23.4% in-hours. Gastrointestinal bleeding, tachycardia, oedema and raised inflammatory markers were over three times more common per hour out-of-hours than in-hours. Hypoxia was only seen out-of-hours. Important clinical presentations in the curriculum such as chest pain and hemiparesis were not commonly seen.ConclusionsThere is greater availability of presentations seen out-of-hours and a changing landscape of presentations seen in-hours. The out-of-hours presentation profile may be due to expanded community and specialist services. Medical schools need to carefully consider the timing and location of their clinical placements to maximise undergraduate learning opportunities.

Abstract Much of the past research conducted with tribal communities was coined "helicopter research," because researchers would enter the community, gather data, and leave the community, never to inform communities how the data was used or published, creating mistrust. Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) is a research approach conducted as an equal partnership between community members, organizational representatives, and researchers that serve as guidelines for researchers working collaboratively with communities. This symposium will offer a panel of presentations highlighting research studies with tribal communities that honor and respect tribal sovereignty in addressing health and wellbeing among their older adults. The panel presentations will consist of presentations on dementia caregiving, generativity and successful aging, social support and diabetes management, elder-centered research methods.

OBJECTIVES/SPECIFIC AIMS: Over 80% of CTSA programs have a community advisory board (CAB), an effective strategy to increase community engagement (CE) in research. Little is known about how the research discussed with CABs aligns with community priorities (i.e., bi-directionality). This program evaluation assessed the health topics presented by researchers to the CABs linked to our CE Program at all three Mayo Clinic sites (MN, AZ, and FL) for relevance to local community needs. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Two coders classified Mayo researcher presentations to our CABs from 2014-2018 for relevance to needs identified in the local 2013 and/or 2016 County Health Needs Assessments and specific topic(s); with high levels of agreement (Kappa=0.90). RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Overall, of the 65 presentations 41 (63%) addressed one or more local health needs (47% MN, 60% FL, 80% AZ). Cross-cutting health topics addressed at 2 sites were physical activity/obesity/nutrition and mental health. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: Findings were shared with our CABs to obtain input on future directions. The FL and AZ CABs are systematic in seeking out or initiating research projects that address local health needs, an approach the MN site is interested in adopting. Ultimately, it is important to demonstrate improved health outcomes with CTSA-based CE research strategies. Understanding community health needs and depth of researchers in those areas may help to focus priorities for demonstrating such outcomes.

For foreign students, the ability to speak as a member of the university community through appropriate presentations and discussions is important. However, it is not easy for foreign students to perform questions and expressions suitable for the discourse situation, and speaking research is mainly focused on presentations, and there are not many studies on questioning activities. However, in a presentation situation, learners are more required to discuss and listen than to present. However, the skills required for learners in a presentation situation are more demanding, such as discussing and listening, than presentation skills. Therefore, in this study, a web-based question method was selected as a way to strengthen audience activity. The effect was verified by comparing the results with the questionnaire method. Through this, a method for audience activity education, which has been neglected in the academic Korean speaking education, was proposed.

ObjectivesThis study aimed to describe mental health emergency department (ED) presentations among young people aged 8–26 years in New South Wales, Australia, and to identify key characteristics associated with higher risk of ED mental health re-presentation.Design, setting and participantsRetrospective analysis of linked ED data records for mental health presentations between 1 January 2015 and 30 June 2018.Main outcome measuresThe main outcome was the total number of mental health ED re-presentations within 1 year, following initial presentation. Count regression models were fitted to estimate factors associated with higher likelihood of re-presentations.ResultsForty thousand two hundred and ninety patients were included in the analyses, and 9713 (~25%) re-presented during the following year; 1831 (20%) presented at least three times. On average, patients re-presented 0.61 times per 365 person-days, with average time until first re-presentation of ~92 days but greatest risk of re-presentation within first 30–60 days. Young people with self-harm or suicidal diagnoses at initial presentation were more likely to re-present. Re-presentations were highest among young people <15 years (IRR 1.18 vs ≥20 years old), female (IRR=1.13 vs male), young people residing outside of major cities (IRR 1.08 vs major cities) and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people (IRR 1.27 vs non-Indigenous).ConclusionsED mental health re-presentation is high among young people. We demonstrate factors associated with re-presentation that EDs could target for timely, high-quality care that is youth friendly and culturally safe, with appropriate referral pathways into community-based primary and mental healthcare services.

Abstract Although behavior change is largely thought to occur on the individual level, maintenance of health behaviors also depends upon factors at the community and population levels. As discussed in earlier presentations, health behaviors can be influenced by social support, environmental context, and population-level policies. For example, maintaining a physical activity regimen is made easier when an older adult has access to a safe environment, support of family and friends, and/or ongoing access to a program that is continuously offered, or sustained, at a local community center. This presentation will focus on the importance of discussing sustainability when considering long-term maintenance of health behaviors. Specifically, this presentation will use examples from the evidence-based Fit & Strong! program, now being offered in 32 states, to explore sustainability of programs at the participant and community level and will provide an overview of barriers and facilitators faced by community organizations.

Not only presenters but also participants can affect the process of online classroom presentations, including the discussion in question-and-answer sessions. Sometimes, several EFL learners who participate in online classroom presentations do not actively join the discussion by asking the presenters questions, suggestions, or objections. Various reasons may affect the issues, including the challenges the participants face. Therefore, this study aims to determine the challenges of EFL learners as participants during online classroom presentations. The participants were 23 sixth-semester students from English Department, Universitas Tidar. The researchers used descriptive qualitative methods and questionnaires as instruments to collect and analyze the data. The researchers found that 61% of the respondents often and sometimes joined the discussion, and 39,1% of the respondents rarely joined the discussion. The researchers conclude that many students actively join the discussion in question-and-answer sessions, but the number of students who did not actively join the discussion is relatively high. The reasons are the challenges faced by the EFL learners related to the low confidence, anxiety, and noise from the presenters and the participants during online classroom presentations. Based on the data, the students prefer using the chat box to the microphone to join the discussion.

Background: Patients who receive early palliative care consults have clinical courses and outcomes more consistent with their goals. Nurses have been shown to be advocates for early palliative care involvement and are able to lead advanced care planning discussions. Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess whether after a brief educational session, nurses at a suburban, community hospital could demonstrate knowledge of palliative care principles, would want to independently initiate end-of-life conversations with patients and families, and would want to place specialty palliative care consults. Design: Four 1 hour presentations were made at 4 nursing leadership council meetings from November through December 2015. Anonymous pre- and post-presentation surveys were distributed and collected in person. Setting/Participant: Nonprofit, suburban, community hospital in Maryland. Participants were full-time or part-time hospital employees participating in a nursing leadership council who attended the presentation. Measurements: We compared responses from pre- and post-presentation surveys. Results: Fifty nurses (19 departments) completed pre-presentation surveys (100% response rate) and 49 nurses completed post-presentation surveys (98% response rate). The average score on 7 index questions increased from 71% to 90%. After the presentations, 86% strongly agreed or agreed that nurses should be able to independently order a palliative care consult and 88% strongly agreed or agreed with feeling comfortable initiating an end-of-life conversation. Conclusion: Brief educational sessions can teach palliative care principles to nurses. Most participants of the study would want to be able to directly consult palliative care and would feel comfortable initiating end-of-life conversations after this educational session.

BackgroundIt is estimated that 28.9% (17.8 million) of the UK population live with a musculoskeletal (MSK) condition. They are a major cause of morbidity, and a significant reason for presentation to primary care.AimThe primary aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of MSK conditions presenting for consultation in general practice. The secondary aim was to determine specifically which MSK conditions present most frequently in general practice.MethodA total of 545 consultations were reviewed at an urban community general practice, which included evaluating morning consultations over a 1-week period taken from each of January, April, July and October 2018. This encompassed all morning consultations from all GPs present. The number of MSK consultations were recorded and, within that, the different presentations and their management plan.ResultsA total of 115 of all consultations were regarding an MSK presentation yielding an overall prevalence of 21.1%. The commonest MSK presentations included the lumbosacral spine (18.3%) and the knee (17.4%). Re-presentations of original condition accounted for 73.9% of all MSK consultations. Steroid injections were administered in 33% of knee related consultations.ConclusionThis study demonstrates that MSK presentations account for a large proportion of GP workload. There are no current mandatory training requirements in orthopaedics as part of the GP curriculum. Structured MSK education for GPs is important and would reduce the burden of re-presentations, particularly that of the lumbosacral spine and knee. Competency in joint injection is also a valuable skill for GPs.

This article describes the development of an Internet-based instructional platform, which aims to guide EFL college students in learning and practicing oral presentation skills. Genre-based instruction and insights from L2 pragmatic instructional research inspired the platform's design. The instructional units in the online platform engage learners in a comparative analysis of rhetorical and language features at both expert speaker and learner speech levels and scaffold the learners in utilizing these features to deliver practice presentations. Documenting the four EFL students' experiences using the platform, the user reports show how the guided tasks expanded the students' understanding of ‘good presentations.' For learners whose language-learning goals are directed towards participating in a global community, it is suggested that key factors in developing web-based oral presentations materials are corpus selection and pedagogical tasks, which consider the learners' subjectivity in determining rhetorical and pragmatic norms.

A commonly accepted theoretical paradigm in the research and practice of effective learning and teaching is constructivist. Researchers and practitioners in the higher education community attend educational technology focused conferences to share their findings, seek feedback and collaboration, or challenge. Although researchers may espouse constructivist methods in their learning designs, this model is not adopted in their presentations. Often a more traditional transmission approach is used with the presenter inflicting many content heavy slides on an increasingly passive audience. The COERSEA model (context, outcomes, engagement, resources, support, evaluation, alignment) comprises seven principles that can be applied to the design of any presentation be it a lecture, seminar or conference paper. The model compliments current trends in online learning design and represents a constructivist approach to presentations that engages participants in a shared learning experience. The model has been successfully applied to a number of topics and contexts at conferences, seminars and workshops.

Retrospective analysis was undertaken on the 1996-2001 data extracted from the NT Module of Caresys and the Hospital Morbidity Data System. There was a 4.6% decrease in total presentations to the five public hospitals but a 9.4% growth in the population during the study period. Substantial differences in emergency presentation patterns were found between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal patients. There were more Aboriginal presentations than non-Aboriginal presentations for all age groups except for 5 to 19 years and 70 to 74 years. Analysis based on the national triage scale showed the higher needs of older adults with the 60 or over age group accounting for the majority of presentations, and Aboriginal presentation rates exceeded the non-Aboriginal presentation rates in most triage categories. Re-attendance within seven days at the emergency departments occurred predominantly among Aboriginal patients regardless of age group. The analysis has highlighted several emerging demographic patterns. The issue of non-urgent visits by Aboriginal patients occupying a large portion of the emergency department utilisation also needs to be addressed.

Scientists and educators travel great distances, spend significant time, and dedicate substantial financial resources to present at conferences. This highlights the value placed on conference interactions. Despite the importance of conferences, very little has been studied about what is learned from the presentations and how presenters can effectively achieve their goals. This essay identifies several challenges presenters face when giving conference presentations and discusses how presenters can use the tenets of scientific teaching to meet these challenges. We ask presenters the following questions: How do you engage the audience and promote learning during a presentation? How do you create an environment that is inclusive for all in attendance? How do you gather feedback from the professional community that will help to further advance your research? These questions target three broad goals that stem from the scientific teaching framework and that we propose are of great importance at conferences: learning, equity, and improvement. Using a backward design approach, we discuss how the lens of scientific teaching and the use of specific active-learning strategies can enhance presentations, improve their utility, and ensure that a presentation is broadly accessible to all audience members.

To curb high rates of alcohol-related violence and injury in Indigenous communities, alcohol management plans (AMPs) were implemented in 2002–2003 and tightened in 2008. This project compares injury presentations and alcohol involvement from two Indigenous Cape York communities, one that entered full prohibition and one that did not. Aclinical file audit was performed for the period 2006–2011, capturing changes in alcohol availability. Medical files were searched for injury presentation documenting type of injury, cause of injury (including alcohol), date of injury and outcomes of all presenting injuries for the time period 1 January 2006 to 31 December 2011, capturing the major changes of the 2008 AMP restrictions. Findings indicated injury presentation rates were higher in both communities before prohibition than afterwards andreduction was more pronounced in community 2 (prohibition). Ongoing research is imperative, as this area is characterised by a near-absence of evidence.

Abstract As the number of older adults in the U.S. and China continues to increase, promoting healthy aging is essential for individuals, family, and society. Both countries face many similar issues due to their aging populations, including prolonging healthy life expectancy and providing quality of care. However, the change in demographics brings with it unique challenges for both the U.S and China. This forum invites scholars and researchers from these two countries to share their knowledge and insights on promoting healthy aging and improving care for older adults. This forum includes five presentations and one-panel discussion. Two presentations will focus on long-term care (LTC) in China, one is to forecast the needs of LTC in the next five decades, and the other is to evaluate the current LTC needs and discuss LTC policy. Using the data from the Health and Retirement Study, the third presentation aims to re-conceptualize spousal caregiving as a dyad-level phenomenon and provides a dynamic view of the spousal caregiving experiences. The last two presentations will focus on promoting healthy aging through clinical interventions. The fourth one is to evaluate the effectiveness of adaptive computer-based cognitive training among community-dwelling older adults in China. The last presentation provides some examples of using pragmatic clinical trials to improve the care of older adults in skilled nursing facilities in the U.S. After the five presentations, the three panelists will provide feedback to the presentations and share their views on healthy aging with the audience.

Abstract Family and friend caregivers of persons with dementia from underrepresented and traditionally underserved backgrounds are significantly underrepresented in dementia and caregiving research despite heightened disease risk, poorer outcomes, and disproportionate use of services within these populations. Efforts to develop and disseminate methods that foster greater inclusion of underrepresented caregiving populations in research are essential to ensuring that culturally specific understandings, priorities, and needs of these groups are systematically understood and addressed. In this symposium, we present a variety of studies that illustrate successful efforts to include dementia caregivers from underrepresented backgrounds in research. Two presentations focus on African American caregivers, one on caregivers residing in highly under-resourced areas, one on Latino caregivers, and one on sexual and gender minority (SGM) caregivers. The first presentation describes a capacity building approach through African American faith communities to develop a research registry and address informational needs regarding dementia. The second presentation focuses on eliciting African American caregivers experiences of crisis events. Presentation three describes a coalitional, community-informed approach to engaging caregivers in highly under-resourced areas to investigate experiences with post-acute care. The fourth presentation describes a community-network approach to implementing a text-message based support intervention among Latino caregivers; and the fifth presentation illustrates the utility of digital methods for engaging SGM dementia caregivers. Collectively, these presentations demonstrate a variety of approaches to engaging dementia caregivers from underrepresented and traditionally underserved backgrounds in research that are specific to individual communities and local contexts – as well as the findings that result from these efforts.

Surgical conditions affecting the abdomen in children can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality if they are not recognised and managed appropriately. It is therefore important that the correct diagnosis is made quickly, and the appropriate intervention is initiated in a timely manner and, if necessary, rapid transfer is made to a specialist paediatric surgical facility. This article provides an overview of the different surgical presentations encountered in children, and outlines the most important points in the history, examination and management of such cases, whether encountered in the emergency setting or in the community. Two illustrative case studies have been included to demonstrate how these emergencies may present in clinical practice.

Abstract Arts programming can address chronic conditions prevalent among older adults. An overview of an implementation of the revised nationwide Opening Minds through Arts (OMA) program anchors the symposium. The paper reports an implementation by an area university and an eldercare facility to recruit and train student volunteers to collaborate with persons living with dementia, and create paintings for a public exhibition. The Arts for a Lifetime Program used bi-weekly student led programming in a long-term care community; the paper includes an overview of materials used throughout the program and reports resident preferences for materials. A report of results of an ethnographic investigation of the impact of creative aging fine arts programs on older adults adds information about how participation might influence the older person’s self-esteem or perceptions of aging. The presentation about creation of music modules investigates the potential of music therapy for the promotion of healing for older adults managing pain. The final paper describes the methodology lessons learned from ARTmail, a community engaged study of the benefits of a structured participatory arts program for older adults with memory symptoms or cognitive impairment. Presentations in this symposium inform identification and development of opportunities to create and engage in meaningful experiences with older adults.

Abstract Gerontology education and the goal of “geriatric competence” are considered invaluable within the field but barriers exist in communicating ideas and training needs across areas of specialization. The main challenge of higher education institutions throughout the world is to develop professionals capable of understanding and responding to the current issues of diverse aging populations. The specific focus of the presentation will be the examination of aging education “themes” within and across different conference sections’ presentations in GSA conference proceedings across the last six years. Specifically, this presentation will review the outcomes of qualitative content analyses from several GSA conferences’ research presentations regarding the role of education across different disciplines in the gerontology field. Thematic analysis of several past years GSA conference programs of 2013 through 2019 yielded some of the following education-related themes (sample): theme #1: community education for clients, practitioners and applied service providers, theme #2: intergenerational educational mentoring/programming among researchers and practitioners in the field, and theme #3: professional knowledge updating for geriatric professionals. The implications for increasing emphasis on ongoing geriatric education for all professionals in the field and those they serve (older adults, families, and community members) will be discussed. This presentation offers insights regarding trends in educational issues within the field as well as the unique valuation of gerontology education within different areas of field specialization. The importance of examining different areas of specialization exists because different aging-related disciplines can share knowledge and resources in providing an integrated array of educational and training options.

Abstract Community-dwelling people with dementia and their caregivers face increasing challenges to active social participation as the condition progresses. Potential difficulties include disclosing the condition, navigating through available support and sustaining interpersonal relationships. Dementia-friendly support services and interventions targeting caregiving dyads can promote social participation. Interventions serve as a communication channel for the dyads to engage, interact and partake in their community. Technology as a facilitator is gaining momentum; increasing evidence suggests that technological solutions contribute to promoting social health for people with dementia and family caregivers. Patient and public involvement and rigorous evaluations of solutions are needed to ensure successful implementation of dementia-friendly technologies. This symposium, presented as a part of the Marie-Curie Innovative-Training-Network action, H2020-MSCA-ITN, grant agreement number 813196, comprises four pertinent presentations. The first presentation outlines the effectiveness of technological interventions to improve social participation of older adults with and without dementia, and barriers and facilitators these interventions present. The second presentation describes disclosure decisions faced by dyads and Patient and public involvement findings on how an existing empowerment intervention supporting disclosure decision-making can transfer to an online environment. The third presentation reports on findings from a study evaluating a tablet-based activation system designed to engage caregiving dyads in social sessions. The final presentation lifts the focus towards how existing online environments can be adapted through dementia-friendly privacy policy agreements, and thereby support social participation of this user group online. Our discussant, Jane Flanagan, synthesizes the presentations and leads a discussion of future directions for policy and practice.

Abstract Recruitment of diverse community-dwelling persons living with dementia (PLWD) and their caregivers (dyads) into randomized controlled trials (RCT) is challenging, time consuming and expensive. This presentation will describe community outreach efforts used over a one-year period to recruit dyads of PLWD and their caregivers in Healthy Patterns RCT. Community outreach yielded 296 inquiries, such that people expressed interest in joining the study. Of the 296 inquiries, almost all (95.6%) identified as African American, and 91(30.7%) consented to join the study. Presentations at senior centers yielded the highest number of inquiries (n=148), followed by staff presence at various community events such as health fairs and senior galas (n=145) and referrals (n=3). We found that community outreach was an effective recruitment strategy to generate inquiries among diverse PLWD and their caregivers to enroll in Healthy Patterns. We will discuss these strategies and provide suggestions for recruiting diverse dyads into clinical trials.

The Annual Clinician Scientist Trainee Symposium (CSTS) gathers the local medical research community at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, including research trainees at the medical student, resident and fellow levels. Trainees showcase their current and upcoming work, and leaders in the community impart their perspectives on the importance and future of research in medicine. At the 4th Annual CSTS, perseverance and cautious optimism emerged as the characteristics that trainees should foster through their future careers as clinician scientists. This was echoed by the challenges and encouraging findings presented by trainees, who conducted their work as part of research projects within the MD, MD/PhD and clinical investigator programs. The four oral presentations and 10 three-minute thesis presentations covered the full breadth of medical disciplines across the spectrum of translational medicine, from fundamental sciences through knowledge translation. The CSTS concluded with the keynote presentation by Michael Strong, current president of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, who gave a glimpse into his decades-long path of overcoming and overturning dogmatic views in the world of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis research, demonstrating how roadblocks in research can become an impulse for stronger science.

Purpose Patient dependence on an emergency department (ED) for ongoing, non-urgent health care is a complex issue related to poor mental and physical health, disability, previous trauma, social disadvantage and lack of social supports. Working Together to Connect Care is an innovative program that provides an assertive community case management approach coupled with an ED management plan to support people who frequently attend the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital ED. The program, which is yet to be fully evaluated, currently helps to manage a large number of patients with a wide variety of complex needs. To demonstrate the scope and capabilities of the program, the purpose of this paper is to present a series of case studies of patients who frequently attended the ED and subsequently became program participants. Design/methodology/approach A series of five case studies is used to illustrate the variety of patient characteristics and available management pathways. Outcomes, including rates of ED attendance, at five months after program commencement are also described. Findings The variety of characteristics and experiences of the patients in the case studies is representative of the program cohort as a whole. Program participation has resulted in improved patient outcomes as demonstrated by crisis resolution, housing stability, engagement with primary health care and reduced frequency of ED presentations. Originality/value A personalized, integrated-care management approach is both flexible and effective in responding to the complex needs of five patients who frequently attend EDs.
