Numerous scholars have documented a dramatic increase in incumbency advantage in US congressional elections and also state legislative elections over the past four decades. For example, Gelman and King show that incumbents in the House of Representatives now receive about twelve extra percentage points solely as a result of holding congressional office during the campaign; the comparable figure for most of the first half of this century was only 2 per cent. This advantage of incumbency has made members of the US House and many state legislators nearly invulnerable to electoral defeat.

Abstract The characteristics of the scale-deposit layers that form on and protect steel surfaces eroded- corroded at elevated temperature, i.e., composition distribution, morphology, deformation, thickness, porosity, mechanical integrity, were determined and related to metal wastage at various laboratory test and in-service conditions. It was found that in the outer part of the scale layer either straight bed material or a mixture of it and iron oxide can form. Near the scale-metal interface, the bed material content of the layer was markedly decreased and it primarily consisted of iron oxide.

Abstract Waste-to-Energy (WTE) and biomass-fired power generation systems are gaining in popularity worldwide as a means of cleanly disposing of waste and generating needed power in the same operation. Due to the variety of components in the feedstock, conditions vary greatly in the combustion sections of these systems. Municipal solid waste (MSW) often contains significant quantities of plastics which introduce halogens and halides into the environment when burned. Their presence greatly increases the corrosion rate of iron-base materials, thus, necessitating the use of higher nickel alloys.
