Abstract Alloy performance is considered following laboratory exposure to synthetic molten slags developed from vanadium pentoxide alone, or as an 80-20% mixture of vanadium pentoxide and sodium sulfate. Test samples were exposed isothermally for times up to 100 hours at 900 C (1652 F) under flowing oxygen. The performance is characterized in terms of corrosion damage as determined from gravimetric, metallographic and conventional analytical procedures. Electronoptical techniques were of value in resolving the morphologies. Accelerated corrosion was found in the presence of the vanadic slags.

Abstract UNS S20910, also known as XM-19 according to ASTM A276, is an austenitic stainless steel used in several industrial applications including oil and gas, chemical, nuclear and cryogenic industry due to its combination of high strength and excellent corrosion resistance. In solution-annealed condition, UNS S20910 shows strength levels significantly higher than conventional austenitic stainless steels.
