Digital edition, creation, and design bring the computer's extraordinary flexibility to the act of creation. The near absence of penalty for experimentation can be, however, both a blessing and a curse. Although the unprecedent flexibility of the computer encourages exploration of artistic ideas, it also can be a factor of great distraction to the artist. A great challenge for the development of graphics softwares today is, thus, to take advantage of computer's unprecedented flexibility, while offering to the user the adapted level of control that she or he is looking for. The difficulty when designing such adapted system is highly influenced by the expectations users place on the job performed by computers. As the computer places itself in the role of an assistant in the creation process, we expect it to be 'smart enough' to deserve this place. Usually, we do not accept well when the result of such assistance is not satisfactory. Nevertheless, the level of expectation, and consequently, satisfaction, is not the same for all users. Novice users tend to be less exigent and are often happy when the computer help them to create interesting results without the need of a strong user intervention. Professional users, on the other hand, usually have different needs. They are looking forward to softwares that are good enough in automatizing tasks, but also that provide intuitive controls to manipulate their results. For these users, the bigger is the impact of the work generated by the computer in the final result, the more these tasks are subjected to have control parameters. In this thesis, we demonstrate that the computer can be placed as an incomparable assistant into the visual creation process once well-adapted interaction systems are provided. Adaptation is thus an important aspect because, in different levels, users want to be able to have the control over the result in order to give their touch and express their creativity. The thesis presents two different scenarios demonstrating that controllability plays a major role in expressiveness: a real-time technique to cluster a dynamic 3D scene in order to achieve an automatic, yet controllable output that can then be used as input to any rendering style; and a number of adaptations to a drawing vector graphics primitive called Diffusion Curves that constrain and control the creation of complex color gradients. The thesis proposes, on one hand, mathematical and computational well-adapted representations to provide the user with different levels of control over algorithms of expressive rendering in order to manipulate two- and tridimensional scenes; and, on the other hand, to reproject this technical support into user-friendly software solutions

This research is concerned with synthesized images and visual realism as knowledge generation tools for CAAD (Computer Aided Architectural Design). The research goal is to document and validate contained visual realism in synthesized images to the architectural project elaboration process. The validated hypothesis is a « correlation » of irradiance and radiance values with the degree of visuel realism of synthesized images. As a practical outcome, this work proposes an evaluation methodology of visual realism based on irradiance and radiance values estimation with Radiance System. This protocol defines the programs and parameters to be used and their sequence to generate synthetic images. Furthermore, the protocol includes a files transfer procedure from formZ to Radiance System.

Our work joins in the theme of the help(assistant) the conception(design) of software architectures. We propose a model allowing to formalize styles of architecture. The model allows to develop in a incremental and joint way two documents: a formal description of the architecture and a history of the conception(design). The description of the architecture is without ambiguity and can be validated by means of existing tools. The history of the conception(design) allows to understand(include) the way the architecture was elaborated. This understanding facilitates its evolution and its re-use. Our model uses the formal language BINGOES as language of architectural description. The basic concepts and the criteria of evolution of the architecture are described by means of plans BINGOES. Based on a relation of behavioral equivalence of the algebra of process, the correction of architecture, maybe verified. We described architecture customer-waiter(-server) of a system of armament AEGIS from our plans and verified his(her, its) correction. Our model is based on the Proflat model. Under the Proflat model, any evolution of a conception(design) is to make by application of an operator of development. We consider that the rules(rulers) of conception(design) supplied by a style are constraints concerning the description of components, connectors and configuration of architecture. We use them to guide a conception(design). In our model, these rules(rulers) are described in the form of operators' library(bookcase) to be applied by the architecture

A supply chain is a set of companies that manufacture and distribute products to consumers. We study the “bullwhip effect” that is propagated therein by modelling each company as an intelligent agent. This effect is the amplification of the variability of orders placed by companies, as one moves away from end-customers. Firstly, we model each company in a Québec wood supply chain as an intelligent agent, in order to propose two decentralized coordination mechanisms reducing this phenomenon. Simulations of this multi-agent system show that our mechanism is efficient for a supply chain as a whole. Secondly, additional simulations are used to build a game, which we analyze with Game Theory. We verify here that companies have no incentive to cease unilaterally from using our two coordination mechanisms (Nash equilibrium).

The lighting design of interior or exterior architectural buildings or urban spaces in general, is a recent activity that nowadays undergoes profound changes from the conception to the realization. In this work, it is shown that computer aided simulations of the principals of light propagation as well as their visualization by image systhesis can provide precious support to lighting design. In particular, the novelty of this PhD work is two fold: - First, for an application point of view. The lighting design of the "Cour Carrée du Louvre" was the first project in its kind where a new lighting concept and a unique technology were invented and simulated before the in-situ realization. Through this application, it is shown how complex a lighting design can be, not only for a technical point of view by also for an architectural point of view. - Second, from an engineering point of view. Part of this work, contributed to the developpement of the first image systhesis software with which several lighting concepts were tested. The theorical background upon which this software is based as well as its functionalities are described

Starting from a survey of algorithmic methods for automatic artistic creation, our works deals with adaptations of these methods to provide accessible art creation forms, focusing on music and computer drawing.the development of accessible computer software requires some constraints. Following these constraints and using adapted automatic art production systems, notably based on artificial ant colony algorithms, we developed two computer programs. The first one is a virtual music instrument, allowing most people to play music and providing and automatic accompaniment. The second one is a drawing workshop with generative methods-based tools provide complex results from simple actions. This PhD thesis details the development of this two programs and their evaluations, with real users meetings

Encouraging seniors to stay at home as long as possible is associated with a higher risk of social isolation. Extensive researches have established the strong relationship between social isolation and health, considering social engagement as an important component influencing psychological well-being and self-esteem of elderly people. In other words, aging well at home cannot be reduced to the management of physical and cognitive frailties and technologies should also tackle the quality of life of the elderly by fostering their social interactions especially for those who are living alone. We postulate that ICTs could alleviate elderly loneliness, in order to cope with their social frailty. However, designing appropriate services and ensure their adoption by the elderly remain open questions, which we try to provide answers at both methodological and instrumental level. We propose an approach to design services for the elderly based on the participation of the future users as part of a "Living Lab". We illustrate this approach by our participation in a European project aiming at developing and evaluating Social TV services. The objective is to foster social interactions among peers to enhance or restore social ties, with the goal of increasing psychological well-being and self-esteem of the elderly living alone

This thesis explores the use of sketching and annotation for the 3D modelling of specific complex phenomena (such as hair, trees, clothes etc. . . ). We introduce a methodology based on three core ideas. First - that prior knowledge of the nature of the object being modeled can be used to help interpret the sketch. Second - that the workflow should match that of a traditional artist, with rough global features being sketched before detailed local ones. Third - that sketching can often be seen as annotating an underlying structure, and that this structure can be inferred from silhouettes, reducing the amount of input required from the user. We illustrate the methodology with example interfaces: for designing clothing using various levels of prior knowledge, for modelling hairstyles and for modelling clouds and trees
Mignard-Debise, Lois. "Tools for the paraxial optical design of light field imaging systems." Thesis, Bordeaux, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018BORD0009/document.
Light field imaging is often presented as a revolution of standard imaging. Indeed, it does bring more control to the user over the final image as the spatio-angular dimensions of the light field offer the possibility to change the viewpoint and refocus after the shot and compute the scene depth map. However, it complicates the work of the optical designer of the system for two reasons. The first is that there exist a multitude of different light field acquisition devices, each with its own specific design. The second is that there is no model that relates the camera design to its optical properties of acquisition and that would guide the designer in his task. This thesis addresses these observations by proposing a first-order optical model to represent any light field acquisition device. This model abstracts a light field camera as en equivalent array of virtual cameras that exists in object space and that performs the same sampling of the scene. The model is used to study and compare several light field cameras as well as a light field microscope setup which reveals guidelines for the conception of light field optical systems. The simulations of the model are also validated through experimentation with a light field camera and a light field microscope that was constructed in our laboratory

In the main section, we introduce new tools for modeling three¬dimensionnal objects for computer graphics. They allow interactive modeling of smooth shapes such as organic-looking shapes (animals, human bodies) and help animating and texturing them. A complex object is created by applying a succession of fusion and twist deformations to a simple object. The fusion tool allows deformation of the shape of the object by merging it with a simple 3D-shape (sphere, ellipsoid,. . . ); the object is deformed so that it embeds the simple shape. The twist tool allows creation of articulations which can be used to animate the deformable object. In a second section, we introduce a non-photorealistic rendering algorithm. It produces images having the appearance of a traditional cartoon from a 3D description of the scene (a static or an animated scene). The 3D scene is rendered with techniques allowing to outline the profiles and edges of objects, to color uniformly the patches, and to render shadows (self-shadows and projected-shadows) due to light sources

Energy performance analysis of new buildings strongly relies on simulation tools. They optimize the design by facilitating building performance analysis during the design phase. However, there are several limitations, among which one of the main is the lack of reliable connections between Computer Aided Design (CAD) and simulation tools. This is particularly critical at a time when the concept of Building Information Model (BIM) is widely applied and the CAD models are becoming richer. This thesis proposes to take advantage of the potential of BIM in order to contribute to emerging approaches for a reliable and seamless interconnection between building information models and simulation environment input files. This would result into significant benefits, both from the cost-effectiveness (analysis is performed more effectively) and the reliability (simulation models strictly comply with design models) points of view. However, to implement such approaches, several barriers have to be considered. The first is the need for a common, standardized BIM language. The second is the definition of adequate and standardized extension mechanisms, to customize BIM for simulation-specific purposes. The third is the provision of software tools, for effective and reliable BIM to simulation models transformation. The first barrier is likely to be overcome through the advent of the buildingSMART Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), which is widely recognized as a standard BIM exchange format in the construction industry. However, with respect to the second barrier, the IFC remains a wide-purpose modelling language and as such, fails to address many domain-specific issues, like e.g. energy simulation. This limitation has been acknowledged by buildingSMART, who have delivered novel methodological tools to allow for domain-specific customization of IFC. The main one is called the Information Delivery Manual (IDM). The aim of our work is the implementation and evaluation the BuildingSMART framework IDM/MVD to interconnect BIM (IFC) and energy simulation. This study led us to propose a pivotal model (BSM for « Building Simulation Model») based on an analogy with model driven engineering approaches. We also have developed a software prototype, which includes a set of mapping rules that automates the translation process between the IFC model and the simulation tool. In the scope of this study, we targeted the COMETH simulation tool (a simulation engine based on the French thermal regulation RT2012) but our results can easily be extended to additional tools

This thesis deals with the design of a computer framework dedicaced to animation by the physical mass-interaction CORDIS-ANIMA networks. Genericity and modularity of CORDIS-ANIMA having been still largely proved, the design and the implementation of such framework have to face with other theorical and practical problems that are discussed here in order to include every function that are required for an interactive creation of models and the communication inside a global chain of production of animated pictures. This thesis ends on the report of various situation of use in pedagogical, research and creation contexts

Simulation tools as means to facilitate setting up a production have become very common in industry and, therefore, in education. Among several significant problems, like pedagogical issues, the cost of equipment acquisition and the adaptability of students to the multitude of Computer-Aided Manufacturing, it is raise in education the problem of selecting software in order to ensure maximum effectiveness of teaching process and students learning. This research study was designed to investigate a methodology to select CAM software that could be effective as a support of CAM learning in university, taking into account different features of CAM learning. We determine the student effectiveness in learning factors of CAM software and further, determine the relationship between the different main factors. The research was conducted using a questionnaire submitted to 50 students attending the second academic year of Mechanical Design and Production. The study provides results from empirical test of these relationships and provides criteria for evaluation simulation of software in education

This thesis deals with the influence of informatical technology over the concept of "work of the mind", which is to be protected by copyright law. Computer-generated creation is the final result of data processing and at the same time, a recent means of expression for creating works. Does the new creation necessitate any protection? If it does, how to achieve it? The analysis of qualification gets organized. The first chapter aims at demonstrating the independence of the result obtained in relation to its creation software. The second tries to assimilate computer-generated creation to legal categories named by legislators and applies the rule of equality for protected works. The next chapters defines the new work in relation to the material protected by copyright law. The last one, finally, explores the essential quality of originality in the copyright law, a key criterium allowing the indinspensable need for protection. In fact, computer-generated creation requires an objectification of all classic signs of recognition concerning works protected by copyright law

We propose in this thesis a way to validate mobile applications by using a technique based on simulation. Thus, we tackle the problems of the test execution which is difficult to implement. In particular, testing for such systems must take into account the mobility of tested processes, which makes it difficult to maintain contact points between testing and tested processes. To solve these difficulties, we define an architecture allowing to simulate several configurations of an environment of agents. The approach by simulation makes it possible to define without limitations the test environment Around the simulation tool (SAM), we propose a way to express the checking of behavior during the execution. For that, we provide a language of control and observation which makes it possible to express the tests to be carried out on the implementation under test. The language (JOR) and the semantics of observation suggested are voluntarily uncoupled from the initial goal of testing. The objective is to profit that one is in a context of simulation to allow all types of definable activities on the tool. Thus, the approach by simulation we suggest is resolutely open in order to allow at the same time the validation by testing and the design and checking of prototypes

Medical imaging and its exploitation by computer methods provide new tools for surgeons in order to increase their precision during interventions. This thesis. St~d!es the preoperative planning step of tumor thermal ablation. The aim is to develop mtmtIve and automated tools to assist the selection of an optimal operative strategy, specifie to each intervention. We propose an original approach inspired by declarative modelling in CAD. This approach considers basic planning rules defined by experts as data, possibly modifiable and adaptative regarding their use. In this goal, we propose a constraints definition language in order to express them in a simple way. We also developped a generic solver that adapts itself to defined contraints. The sol ver detects the solutions set associated to each case and proposes optimal intervention strategies. We have also developped sorne interface tools in order to provide to the surgeon an intuitive planning software, displaying precious information for the choice of an operative strategy

Fire is a difficult natural phenoma to reproduce in computer graphics. Last years, convincing models based on physics werre designed, but they remain expensive. However some applications require real-time frame rates : video games, virtual environments such as archaelogical sites etc. . . Few real-times approaches were proposed, but they really suffer from a lack of realism, because of all the approximations they realize. In this context, we tried to develop a real-time model which is also visually realistic. We focused on “domestic” fires : candles, oil lamps, torches, camp fires, etc. . . These flames are interactively animated thanks to an optimized fluids simulation. The main contribution of our approach is the use of textured NURBS surfaces to visualize flames. We also introduced mechanisms to give a good control over the simulation. Moreover, we proposed a new lighting method with a photometric solid to represent flames illumination. Last, we considered animation of plentiful flames. To reach this goal, we introduced levels of detail both in the animation and in the rendering stages, according to the distance from the sources. These levels of detail can also be useful to adapt the accuracy of the model in respect of resources or applications purpose

[The aim of that thesis is to show the benefits of integrated expert systems in Computer Aided Dwellin Design (CADD) systems. Design is an intricate ill-strcutrure problem. So, because of that complexity, rhe designers organise tehmselves and th design process in oreder to fnd what HA SIMON told the « Satisfectum » : a ssatisficing solution to design problem but not an optimum. But actually the CADD systems are lilited to the representation (calculation, lay outs, …) of the project under design. By integrating expert systems, CADD system will get a king of « intelligence » and will have a better understanding of the users needs. In order to verify that idea, a new CADD system has been built : X2A-SE. It incudes two kinds of expert systems : - deductive on « intelligent » interfaces between designers and classical CADD tools, - heuristic evaluation tools for aproximated calculations. These expert systems have been intregated to a classical CADD system. But they can also work alone out of that system. In our work we have developped the thermal design components of those tolls. ]
