Groups of neonates who are usually treated at hospitals that provide specialized pediatric care are not adequately classified by the use of diagnosis-related groups (DRGs). Therefore, a set of revised DRGs, pediatric modified DRGs (PM-DRGs), have been developed. Use of PM-DRGs substantially improves the classification of neonates in the following ways: a single pediatric modified major diagnostic category has been defined to include only and all neonates (patients younger than 29 days of age when admitted to the hospital); deaths and transfers of newborns are no longer combined into a single g

The legal ramifications of diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) on the health-care system in general and on pharmacists in particular are undetermined. As pharmacists continue to play an increasing role in therapeutic decisions, their exposure to malpractice suits will continue to rise. Pharmacists' liability in medical malpractice actually began prior to the introduction of DRGs, with the adoption by many states of “generic substitute” laws. Situations that can lead to judgments against pharmacists are reviewed. The majority rule of joint and several liability is explained. The conclusion that “DR

The evaluation and reimbursement of hospital use by means of diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) may have a major impact on the utilization of regional neonatal care. Medicare has already implemented the DRG system and other payors, including Medicaid, Blue Cross, and commercial insurance, are also considering adopting it. Under this approach, neonates are assigned to one of seven DRGs, each of which is reimbursed at a relatively fixed rate. The escalating cost of medical care in most industrial countries has given impetus to several different strategies designed to impose limitations on cost and introduce efficiency into health care systems. In the United States of America, legislation was passed in 1983 to introduce a system of prospective payment for Medicare hospital expenditures. This change was a departure from the previous cost based reimbursement method and was based upon a categorisation of medical conditions into discrete groups termed diagnosis-related groups (DRGs). The introduction of diagnosis related groups (DRGs) as a basis for funding in the United States has revealed several shortcomings in current DRG systems. Overall, DRGs have proven to be poor predictors of cost, accounting for approximately one third of the variation in cost and length of stay for surgical DRGs and falling to less than 10% for medical DRGs. Their ability to contain costs also remains uncertain, with savings associated with reductions in length of stay being offset by increased readmission rates. Given the increasing commitment of government to casemix approaches to funding it i

SynopsisThis paper examines the link between diagnosis and length of psychiatric in-patient stay. Up to now the main method of predicting the use of in-patient services has been to use diagnosis-related groups (DRGs), primarily in the USA. Previous findings have revealed that DRGs generally predict less than 10% of variation in hospital stay. Psychiatric DRGs are considered to lack homogeneity and are too broad. Nevertheless, diagnosis, as an indicator of resource utilization, is now on the agenda in the UK and a study which examines the link between service use and diagnosis per se is called

This work applies decision tree analysis to construct a classification sensor for Taiwan’s diagnosis related groups (Tw-DRGs) of medical specialties. Inpatient expenses of 2009 in a national health insurance database were transformed to the SQL database analytic software for analysis and classification. DRG code is selected by the principal diagnosis code with the operating room procedures code. Selecting the combinations in accordance with National Health Insurance inpatient diagnostic related groups TW-DRG Classification Manual, resulting in repeated DRG codes. The advent of a non-cost reimbursement system has served as an impetus for the re-examination of the methods by which infectious processes are treated. This system prospectively sets payment rates for illnesses that require hospitalization. Diagnostic-Related Groups (DRGs) are the basis of this new system. DRGs attempt to link reimbursement to the broad category of clinical diagnosis by separating diagnoses into nearly 500 groups; each with a defined reimbursement rate. This rate does not substantially vary with regard to the length of hospital stay, the number of diagnostic tests performed or

Objectives/Goals: This study aims to evaluate the performance of a third-party artificial intelligence (AI) product in predicting diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) in a community healthcare system. We highlight a use case illustrating how clinical practice leverages AI-predicted information in unexpected yet advantageous ways and assess the AI predictions accuracy and practical application.
