In a changing digital world, organisations need to be effective information processing entities, in which people, processes, and technology together gather, process, and deliver the information that the organisation needs. However, like other information processing entities, organisations are subject to the limitations of information evolution. These limitations are caused by the combinatorial challenges associated with information processing, and by the trade-offs and shortcuts driven by selection pressures. This paper applies the principles of information evolution to organisations and uses them to derive principles about organisation design and organisation change. This analysis shows that information evolution can illuminate some of the seemingly intractable difficulties of organisations, including the effects of organisational silos and the difficulty of organisational change. The derived principles align with and connect different strands of current organisational thinking. In addition, they provide a framework for creating analytical tools to create more detailed organisational insights.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present design principles for holistic design of online degree programmes (ODPs) in higher education (HE). The study adds to previous research on online programme design by examining how the digital competence and pedagogical strategy of a HE organisation can inform holistic ODP design.Design/methodology/approachThis paper presents a case study placed in the context of a Finnish applied HE organisation. Design-based research (DBR) process is used to create holistic design principles for new ODPs. Theoretical framework for the study is digitally competent organisation (Kampylis et al., 2015) and pedagogical strategy is innovation pedagogy (Kettunen et al., 2013).FindingsDesign principles for pedagogically informed holistic design of ODPs are presented as a three-tiered model comprising organisational, pedagogical and ODP layers. Each layer includes various principles for holistic design to integrate an organisation's pedagogical strategy in a digitally competent context to create quality ODPs.Research limitations/implicationsThe paper presents a case study from a HE organisation in Finland, but results are applicable to a wider global audience.Practical implicationsAs a contribution to practitioners, this paper presents a three-tiered holistic design of ODP in HE organisation, where the design principles are categorised in organisational, pedagogical and ODP design layers. In addition, suggestions to managers, instructional designers and educators are made for the holistic design of ODPs.Social implicationsBuilding the sense of community in ODPs and offering continuous support in pedagogy and technology are valuable for the well-being of the staff, students and the wider society.Originality/valueThe paper draws relationships between holistic design of ODPs, digital competence and pedagogical strategy. The paper provides managerial and operational viewpoints to managers, administrators and educators of HE organisations that plan to create new ODPs with a holistic focus on the educational organisation, its pedagogical strategy and digital competence. Recommendations for further development, possible applications and research of ODP education are made.

Purpose The aim of this paper was to explore digital preservation requirements within the wider National Geoscience Data Centre (NGDC) organisational framework in preparation for developing a preservation policy and integrating associated preservation workflows throughout the existing research data management processes. This case study is based on an MSc dissertation research undertaken at Northumbria University. Design/methodology/approach This mixed methods case study used quantitative and qualitative data to explore the preservation requirements and triangulation to strengthen the design validity. Corporate and the wider scientific priorities were identified through literature and a stakeholder survey. Organisational preparedness was investigated through staff interviews. Findings Stakeholders expect data to be reliable, reusable and available in preferred formats. To ensure digital continuity, the creation of high-quality metadata is critical, and data depositors need data management training to achieve this. Recommendations include completing a risk assessment, creating a digital asset register and a technology watch to mitigate against risks. Research limitations/implications The main constraint in this study is the lack of generalisability of results. As the NGDC is a unique organisation, it may not be possible to generalise the organisational findings, although those relating to research data management may be transferrable. Originality/value This research examines the specific nature of geoscience data retention requirements and looks at existing NGDC procedures in terms of enhancing digital continuity, providing new knowledge on the preservation requirements for a number of national datasets.

Анотація:
The Covid-19 pandemic has brought with it dramatic environmental changes, forcing organisations to adopt digital technologies on a wider scale, under significant time pressure. While the pandemic tested the agility and resilience of organisations, team dynamics and the implications of virtualisation on collaboration and creativity have become increasingly important for research (George et al., 2020) as the daily working routines in which employees have been embedded in for decades have become disrupted. The abrupt move to “working from home” that the pandemic created is arguably the most significant organisational design change in our lifetimes. Organisations are now asking how the virtualisation of work has impacted on the collaboration and communication necessary for driving innovation behaviour, and what strategies are available to develop remote innovation solutions. In this study, we explore organisational culture theory against the backdrop of digitally transforming innovation development as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. This multi-layered model offers a useful framework for thinking about processes that foster innovation. By doing so, we investigate how organisations have adapted their approach to remote, collaborative innovation from the perspective of nineteen industry experts. The purpose of this study is to present the determinants of organisational culture to develop digital innovation in a hybrid working environment. Our findings reveal twelve distinct variables across the artifacts, values, and assumptions required to ensure digital innovation. These findings have implications for theory and practice, as it provides organisational leaders with a strategic understanding as to how a remote innovative culture can be developed, and subsequently exploited.

A questionnaire administered to UK library directors obtained responses to the key areas of organisational structures, communication, the management of electronic/digital information, skills, learning and development, teams, leadership and the degree of change in the roles of senior and middle management.

Анотація:
Purpose Information security management (ISM) is proving to be an important topic in the modern world; in environments that will rely a great deal on digital technologies, such as smart cities, ISM research is of high importance and needs to be well analysed. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach This paper indicates the criticality of ISM for smart cities through the literature, then focusses on top organisational factors influencing ISM in smart city organisations, which are embraced and justified from the literature. Findings This paper highlights the need for more research around ISM in the context of smart city organisations, also ISM-related organisational factors that are expected to most influence smart city organisational performance. Research limitations/implications This paper is proposed to influence more research in the area of ISM for smart cities among the research community. Additional research is also expected to further validate and examine the selected organisational factors. Originality/value This paper presents new information on ISM in smart city organisations, the lack of research in this area, and the criticality of the highlighted issues, creates high value for the conclusions and findings of this research. The paper also highlights top organisational factors that are expected to influence ISM in smart city organisations.

In this study, we summarised the human resources practices for the development of Operator 4.0. Operator 4.0 is the worker operating in an Industry 4.0 organisation. Such organisations introduce novel digital technologies—including Big Data, robotics, and the Internet of Things—along the assembly line. Operators 4.0 can manage Industry 4.0 technologies, and Industry 4.0 technologies also support their activities. Some studies illustrate the enabling Industry 4.0 technologies for this role and the various qualitative benefits for Operator 4.0. However, organisations encounter issues to prepare traditional manufacturing workers for this novel role, which implies a drastic change in training and designing jobs, particularly for the qualitative aspects of the work organisation and human-computer interaction. Moreover, traditional manufacturing workers do not possess the proper digital skills to manage complex Industry 4.0 technology. Thus, there is a lack of study that illustrates what organisational practices are used to develop an Operator 4.0. Human resources management is the organisational function devoted to these challenges, such as a lack of a skilled workforce in handling high-tech technologies and employee retention. It provides human resource practices to develop workers for their role. Therefore, we addressed this gap by conducting a systematic literature review to summarise the used human resource practices for the development of an Operator 4.0. The results show six human resource practices for developing an Operator 4.0: staffing, job design, training, performance appraisal system, knowledge management, and compensation. We concluded by proposing a research agenda to advance this research stream.

Purpose This paper asks how the introduction of “smart” digital technologies might affect the goals that can be attributed to telecare for older people, by those coordinating its provision. Design/methodology/approach A total of 29 in-depth, qualitative interviews were conducted with local authorities, housing associations and other organisations coordinating smart telecare provision, as well as telecare manufacturers and suppliers. Interviews were analysed by using qualitative thematic analysis. Findings The analysis reveals discrepancies between the goals and outcomes of smart telecare provision, according to those coordinating service delivery. This study concludes that the goal for smart telecare to be preventative and cost-efficient may be complicated by various organisational and operational challenges associated with coordinating provision. Originality/value New, “smart” telecare technology for older people stands apart from earlier, user-activated or automatic devices. It may have distinct and under-researched organisational and ethical implications.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of the pilot implementation of an industry-specific web portal as an IT resource on textile SMEs organisational performance. Using a resource-based perspective, portal delivery functionalities, considered as non-physical IT resources, are analysed using the dimensions of portal usefulness, portal interface, and service-oriented portal functions on SMEs users’ perceived outcomes of organisational performance. Design/methodology/approach – Qualitative and quantitative approaches are used to explore the research hypotheses. Data were collected using field interviews and survey from senior executives of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Taiwanese textile industry. Findings – Results indicate that the service-oriented portal function dimension, consisting of portal maintenance service, B2B function, and cloud computing, significantly influences organisational performance. Unexpected findings, such as the negative impact of greater industry benchmark information on perceived SME performance, deserve further investigation. Research limitations/implications – The study extends the theory and knowledge on the resource-based view and its implications on e-business organisational performance of SMEs. The study also offers findings relevant to the design of portal sites for SME administrators and information service providers. Limitations of the research include a small size and the industry-specific data limiting the generalisability of the findings. Practical implications – Research results practically serve as informative indicators for policy makers, information service providers, and SMEs executives to evaluate feasible elements for web portal design in traditional industry. Findings from this study may help portal service providers in designing better web portal functionalities for SMEs. Originality/value – This study contributes to the IT business value literature by identifying the linkages between industry-specific portal delivery functionalities and perceived organisational performance through the examination of portal usefulness, portal interface, and service-oriented portal function for textile SMEs.

Information technology and communication (ICT) plays an important role as a catalyst for organisational development and innovation. However, old information systems that are known as legacy systems often expose organisations to the risk of business failure. These systems are not only impeding the advancement in technology strategy but also hindering the organisations’ business competitiveness. Nevertheless, legacy systems are essential in supporting critical functions in organisations including the public sector and could not be scrapped easily. These systems need to be given a new strength through modernisation to continue providing the best service in line with global trends. Modernisation is a complex task that involves several related aspects. In the context of the public sector, legacy systems involve a complicated information relationship, environment, and culture, while ensuring the citizens are of high priority. The implementation of a digital government represents the transformation of the public service delivery to the citizens that emphasises a citizen-centric design. This study, therefore, aims to address this concern by reviewing the factors involved and suggesting a guideline in the form of a conceptual model to assist in the modernisation of legacy systems for a citizen-centric digital government. Data from the theoretical study were analysed using content analysis. The results show that the legacy systems’ modernisation comprised four main aspects, namely human, process, product, and organisation aspects, with related factors and elements. This model contributes as a reference for the public sector and provides overall guidance in performing legacy systems modernisation.

It is predicted that there will be more people over the age of 65 than under 5 by 2050 in developed countries. In recognition of the needs of an ageing population, there is a growing field of research in HCI focused on engaging older people with digital technologies. This thesis contributes to the field of ageing in HCI through a community-based participatory design investigation into the challenges and opportunities for older people to engage with digital tools in their everyday lives. We demonstrate how the commitments, practices and values of participatory design can be used to better understand and foster engagement between digital tools and older people through the support of community-based organisations. This is achieved through two case studies. The rst study with a traditional computer class at a local day centre. The second with a London-based intergenerational running club. The research reflects on and examines the details and decisions of the learning and adoption process across these two studies. We expand our view beyond the digital tools to the influences and situations that contribute to older people's attitudes and usage. Through the lens of participatory design and communities of practice we discuss the considerations of values, problem-solving, and identity that can potentially be transferred to other non-traditional digital learning environments for older people. We provide recommendations and reflect on our challenges to serve as guidance for other researchers engaging in similar participatory work `in-the-wild'.

Experts predict that more than one billion people will adapt to the lifestyle of digital nomads until 2035. Digital nomadism is a new lifestyle and employment oportunity and arises from the combination of reliable and affordable technology and the increasing mobility of employees. Digital nomads spend at least a few months per year abroad, change their destination frequently, and earn their living with digital jobs. Retaining and developing these digital nomads are one of the biggest challenges for companies in the future. They have to find new solutions to match labour supply and demand in the digital era. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the strategic posture of corporate organisations towards digital nomadism and to develop suitable design principles to successfully integrate digital nomads into the corporate environment, which has not been research yet. The derived research aim of this study is threefold. The first objective is to identify and analyse the motivational drivers of corporate organisations to integrate digital nomads. Second, this thesis aims at clarifying the nature of potential challenges while integrating digital nomads. Third, design principles for corporate organisations are developed to propose a smooth integration process of digital nomads. Due to a lack of theoretical and empirical insights, a qualitative, explorative approach was employed to achieve the established research aims. Accordingly, nine interviews with digital nomads and companies employing digital nomads were conducted. The analysis of transcripts reveals two major motivations of corporate organisations to integrate digital nomads, namely (1) Proactive Motivations and (2) Reactive Motivations . Similarly, there are two main categories of challenges for corporate organisations to integrate digital nomads, namely (1) Organisational Challenges and (2) Social Challenges . These corporate motivations and challenges were enriched by digital nomads’ perspectives to create a more sophisticated picture. Finally, five design principles: (1) Corporate Culture, (2) Career Planning, (3) Govern ance, (4) Performance Measurement and (5) Tools at Work were derived to help corporate organisations to successfully integrate digital nomads. This study contributes to both theory and practice by bringing more clarity to the understanding of this newly emerged phenomenon.
Os especialistas preveem que, até 2035, mais de 1 bilhão de pessoas se adaptarão ao estilo de vida dos nómadas digitais. O nomadismo digital constitui um estilo de vida e uma oportunidade de emprego novos, emergindo da combinação entre a tecnologia acessível e de confiança e a crescente mobilidade dos trabalhadores. Os nómadas digitais passam, pelo menos, alguns meses por ano no estrangeiro, mudam o seu destino com frequência e ganham a vida com trabalhos digitais. A retenção e o desenvolvimento destes nómadas digitais apresenta-se como um dos maiores desafios para as empresas no futuro. Estas veem-se obrigadas a encontrar novas soluções para harmonizar a oferta e a procura de trabalho na era digital. O objetivo da presente tese é a investigação da postura estratégica das organizações empresariais relativamente ao nomadismo digital, bem como o desenvolvimento de princípios de conceção adequados que permitam integrar com êxito os nómadas digitais no ambiente empresarial, assunto que ainda carece de investigação. O presente estudo possui três objetivos de investigação daí resultantes. O primeiro objetivo é a identificação e a análise dos fatores catalisadores no seio das organizações empresariais que as levam a integrar os nómadas digitais. Em segundo lugar, a presente tese visa esclarecer a natureza dos potenciais desafios aliados à integração dos nómadas digitais. Em terceiro lugar, são desenvolvidos princípios de conceção para organizações empresariais, no sentido de propor um processo de integração harmoniosa dos nómadas digitais. Devido à ausência de perspetivas teóricas e empíricas, optou-se por uma abordagem qualitativa e exploratória, a fim de alcançar os objetivos estabelecidos para o presente estudo. Nesse sentido, foram realizadas nove entrevistas com nómadas digitais e com empresas que os empregam. A análise do conteúdo das entrevistas revela duas motivações principais por parte das organizações empresariais em integrar nómadas digitais, designadamente, (1) Motivações proativas e (2) Motivações reativas. Da mesma forma, existem duas categorias principais de desafios colocados às organizações empresariais ao integrar nómadas digitais, designadamente, (1) Desafios organizacionais e (2) Desafios sociais. Estes desafios e motivações por parte das empresas foram enriquecidos pelas perspetivas dos próprios nómadas digitais, para criar uma imagem mais sofisticada. Por último, são apresentados cinco princípios de conceção: (1) Cultura empresarial, (2) Planeamento da carreira, (3) Governação, (4) Avaliação do desempenho e (5) Ferramentas de trabalho, que visam ajudar as organizações empresariais a integrar com sucesso os nómadas digitais. A contribuição do presente estudo é tanto teórica como prática, ao tornar mais clara a compreensão deste fenómeno recente.

Uppsatsen har som syfte att identifiera utmaningar som medborgarmedverkan medför inom en offentlig verksamhet vid utveckling av offentliga digitala tjänster. Utifrån dessa utmaningar diskuteras potentiella möjligheter som uppstår när utmaningarna klaras av samt vilken roll IKT och Government 2.0 har i dessa utmaningar och möjligheter. Vidare diskuteras även Participatory Design som tjänstedesignansats utifrån identifierade utmaningar och potentiella möjligheter vid utveckling av offentliga digitala tjänster. Uppsatsens teoretiska referensram redogör främst för forskningsämnena e-Government och Government 2.0 samt tjänstedesignansatser så som Participatory Design och User-Centered Design, samskapande och vikten av att involvera användare. En fallstudie har genomförts i en svensk kommun för att öka förståelsen om medborgarmedverkan vid utveckling av offentliga digitala tjänster. Genom förståelsen av kommunens kontext identifieras nio olika utmaningar: Utmaningar: Arbete för öppenhet och transparens mot medborgare Skapa mångfald i utvecklingsprojekt Identifiera fler faktorer, utöver mångfald, för en lyckad medborgarmedverkan Sprida kunskapen om vilka faktorer som är viktiga för lyckad medborgarmedverkan Tillfoga sig kunskapen om hur man når ut till medborgare på bästa sätt Motivera medborgare till att medverka (kommunicera vilket värde medverkan ger för varje enskild medborgare – dvs. kunna svara på frågan ”Varför ska just jag medverka i detta projekt?”) Bibehålla medverkande medborgare Öka datakunnigheten hos medborgare och andra aktörer Använda IKT och Webb 2.0 till dess fulla potential Dessa utmaningar ligger sedan till grund för potentiella möjligheter. Mycket av detta sköts i dagsläget digitalt i varierande form så som mail, chatt och intranät med sociala flöden. I vissa fall kan olika metoder för kommunikation bli överbelastade medan andra blir åsidosatta, alla metoder har några positiva aspekter som kan används för att eventuellt underlätta den digitala kommunikationen inom företag och organisationer. Denna studie undersöker just detta, hur sköts intern kommunikation inom företag och organisationer idag och hur kan de positiva aspekterna av det integreras i en lösning. Genom intervjuer med anställda inom olika företag och organisationer specificerades hur kommunikation kan skötas idag, vad det finns för krav på kommunikationsmetoderna samt deras positiva respektive negativa egenskaper. Med intervjuerna som grund genomfördes en skissprocess där olika förslag vägdes emot varandra. Det förslag som presenteras är det som uppfyllde största antal krav och integrerade flest positiva aspekter.

Indigenous Knowledge Management Systems are being developed in order to preserve, process and retrieve knowledge. Unfortunately, most of the systems available do not take into account the different cultural ways of organising and sharing indigenous knowledge. Current technology trends and developments have hardly been informed by African indigenous and rural knowledge systems. Either substantial modifications are necessary in adapting technology to the requirements of indigenous knowledge systems, or those systems are inadequately represented through technologies. This dissertation explores different options for organising video recorded indigenous knowledge, in the pursuit of maintaining local communication patterns and practices. Furthermore, methodological perspectives on the challenges and aims of designing products suited to rural practices and conceptualisations in Southern Africa will be explored. We pursue an explorative study following and action research approach. The evolutionary design of our indigenous knowledge management system is informed by a series of interactions, reflections, discussions and prototype evaluations with a pilot community in Eastern Namibia. We have extracted themes out of the discussions and interactions to inform our design and the development of a digital knowledge organisation.

Today’s enterprises are operating in a highly complex environment with rapid disruptions from different areas such as technology, regulations or market, all of them capable of bringing the entire industry upside down. And many large organizations are adopting agile software development methods as part of their continuous push towards higher flexibility and shorter lead times. Agility, however, introduces challenges and problems for the engineering of enterprises, yet few reports on organizational alignment in this regard are available in the literature. This problem of alignment between business/operations and IT has been around for as long as computers have been introduced to the work offices and is still today an important issue for enterprises of any kind. This thesis, therefore, tries to investigate the lack of insight or fragmented knowledge regarding organizational design or architecture of modern enterprises in both academia and industry. The purpose of this thesis is to explicate the challenges and recommendations found in research papers, industrial whitepapers and interviews in order to propose guidelines for achieving better alignment. The goal of this thesis is to provide an inventory of available researches in the area of Business and IT Alignment (BITA) and organizational science in order to help suggest a basis for future research. For this purpose, a Design Science Research (DSR) strategy has been followed in combination with a literature review accompanied by two rounds of interviews as a means for data collection and evaluation. The artefacts resulting from this thesis take the form of fifteen guidelines extracted using coding analysis from the literature review and a first round of interviews at a major Swedish vehicle manufacturing enterprise. The guidelines were subsequently evaluated in a second round of interview with an industry expert reviewing the correctness and usefulness of the guidelines. The results of the evaluation proved that guidelines were useful for both the academia and industry experts. Hence, enabling the author to claim that a tentative proposition has been achieved.

Detta problem med anpassningen mellan verksamhet och IT har funnits så länge datorer har introducerats på arbetsplatserna och är än idag en viktig fråga för organisationer av alla slags. Denna avhandling försöker därför undersöka bristen på insikt eller fragmenterad kunskap om organisationsdesign eller arkitektur hos moderna företag i både den akademiska världen och såväl industrin. Syftet med denna avhandling är att beskriva de utmaningarna och rekommendationerna som finns i forskningspapper, industriella vitböcker och intervjuer för att föreslå riktlinjer för bättre anpassning. Målet med denna avhandling är att tillhandahålla en inventering av tillgängliga forskningar inom området Business and IT Alignment (BITA) och organisationsvetenskap för att kunna föreslå en grund för framtida forskning. För detta ändamål har en Design Science Research (DSR) strategi följts i kombination med en litteraturstudie åtföljd av två intervjuomgångar som ett medel för datainsamling och utvärdering. Artefakterna som härrör från denna avhandling har formen av femton riktlinjer extraherade med hjälp av kodningsanalys från litteraturstudien och en första intervjuomgång hos ett stort svenskt fordonstillverkningsföretag. Riktlinjerna utvärderades därefter i en andra intervjuomgång med en branschexpert som granskade riktigheten och användbarheten av riktlinjerna. Resultaten av utvärderingen visade att riktlinjerna var användbara för både akademin och branschexperter. Därför gör det möjligt för författaren att hävda att en preliminär proposition har uppnåtts.

There has been increasing interest in open innovation in academic research as well as industry application since the concept was introduced in 2003. The concept got much attention because of its economic benefits and novel means for facilitating innovation. This thesis aims to adapt the concept of open innovation to the university environment, in order to foster innovation in the development process for intellectual property (IP) derived from academic research activities. It contributes to the literature on open innovation adapted to the university context, i.e. open collaboration on the development of intellectual property towards a commercial ready stage. In order to investigate the potential of open innovation in the university environment, a focus group was conducted. In addition, the business process of Quirky Inc. was analysed as an example to better understand how open innovation works in the business context. The results of the study’s data analyses inform new opportunities for interventions in universities towards fostering different approaches to IP development as research outcomes. Further, it reveals interventions that can promote open innovation approaches in the university’s context more generally.

The view on business strategy has changed significantly over time. In the past, a functional-level strategy prevailed in which IT strategy was subordinate to, and needed to align with a deliberate business strategy. Recently, the rapid development in digital technologies has left no industry untouched, and digital transformation has become an enabler and differentiator for businesses. Therefore, IT strategy transcends the view of alignment and moves towards a fusion of business and IT strategies, which is coined as digital business strategy. But its alignment with organisational design is yet to be realised to achieve sustainable business performance, particularly in the Saudi water industry. In Saudi Arabia, the water industry is undergoing a program of privatisation, large-scale restructuring and tremendous digital transformations to meet the needs of stakeholders (i.e. the government, shareholders, employees, partners, customers and society). This industry is fragmented within the public and private sectors wherein Saudi water companies are responsible for the supply of potable water, collection and treatment of wastewater and have government mandate to reorganise using new digital technologies, which would benefit the industry and be financially, socially and environmentally feasible for all. However, the water industry has had little research in the use of digital business strategy and its alignment process with organisational design that will lead to sustainable business performance. Therefore, the question is what extent the digital strategic alignment between digital business strategy and organisational design factors enhances sustainable business performance? Drawing on information processing view and knowledge-based view, this research aims to explore the impact of digital business strategy on organisational design factors, namely, structure, processes, people and rewards, to identify the success factors needed for digital strategic alignment that improves sustainable business performance in water companies. The research adopted the Star model of organisational design (Kates & Galbraith 2007) that includes these factors and used a qualitative approach with two case studies (Saudi public and private water companies). Qualitative data were collected using interviews, focus groups and document analysis, in addition to reviewing the existing literature. The data were analysed using a content analysis approach with a computer-aided open-access tool (QCAmap) developed by Mayring (2014). Through this study, 24 propositions were developed, 18 critical success factors (CSFs) were explored, and six criteria and nine metrics for sustainable business performance were identified. The 18 CSFs were divided into three groups—strategic, organisational and digital factors. Strategic factors include a shared digital strategic vision, shared digital strategic objectives, top management support, knowledge integration, simultaneous incremental–comprehensive development, digital partnerships management, quality management with key performance indicators (KPI), and change management. Organisational factors include agile structures, shared digital units, task redetermination, unified digital processes, unified digital flows of information, renewed digital skills and knowledge and digital governance in addition to the existing organisational design factors (i.e., people and rewards). Digital factors include integrated digital solutions, digital centralisation, and interoperability and compatibility. Together all help shape the novel digital organisational design to achieve digital strategic alignment. Thus, this study developed a Digital Strategic Alignment Model (DSAM), which includes all CSFs for the digital strategic alignment process that ensures sustainable business performance. Three factors, namely, renewed digital skills and knowledge, change management, and quality management with KPIs, support people and rewards in the existing organisational design literature as they influence organisational design factors to improve performance. The other (additional) 15 CSFs can be considered as novel knowledge contributions to elaborate the organisational design theory in the context of digital business strategy and sustainable business performance. However, there remain other factors to consider. Therefore, this study emphasises on future research in that these CSFs need quantitative investigation using survey to test how these CSFs affect the triple bottom line of sustainability. Practically, it informs managers that achieving digital strategic alignment is key to process improvement that benefits organisations, employees and users.

Experts predict that more than one billion people will adapt to the lifestyle of digital nomads until 2035. Digital nomadism is a new lifestyle and employment opportunity and arises from the combination of reliable and affordable technology and the increasing mobility of employees. Digital nomads spend at least a few months per year abroad, change their destination frequently, and earn their living with digital jobs. Retaining and developing these digital nomads are one of the biggest challenges for companies in the future. They have to find new solutions to match labour supply and demand in the digital era. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the strategic posture of corporate organisations towards digital nomadism and to develop suitable design principles to successfully integrate digital nomads into the corporate environment, which has not been research yet. The derived research aim of this study is threefold. The first objective is to identify and analyse the motivational drivers of corporate organisations to integrate digital nomads. Second, this thesis aims at clarifying the nature of potential challenges while integrating digital nomads. Third, design principles for corporate organisations are developed to propose a smooth integration process of digital nomads. Due to a lack of theoretical and empirical insights, a qualitative, explorative approach was employed to achieve the established research aims. Accordingly, nine interviews with digital nomads and companies employing digital nomads were conducted. The analysis of transcripts reveals two major motivations of corporate organisations to integrate digital nomads, namely (1) Proactive Motivations and (2) Reactive Motivations. Similarly, there are two main categories of challenges for corporate organisations to integrate digital nomads, namely (1) Organisational Challenges and (2) Social Challenges. These corporate motivations and challenges were enriched by digital nomads’ perspectives to create a more sophisticated picture. Finally, five design principles: (1) Corporate Culture, (2) Career Planning, (3) Governance, (4) Performance Measurement and (5) Tools at Work were derived to help corporate organisations to successfully integrate digital nomads. This study contributes to both theory and practice by bringing more clarity to the understanding of this newly emerged phenomenon.

O nomadismo digital constitui um estilo de vida e uma oportunidade de emprego novos, emergindo da combinação entre a tecnologia acessível e de confiança e a crescente mobilidade dos trabalhadores. Os nómadas digitais passam, pelo menos, alguns meses por ano no estrangeiro, mudam o seu destino com frequência e ganham a vida com trabalhos digitais. A retenção e o desenvolvimento destes nómadas digitais apresenta-se como um dos maiores desafios para as empresas no futuro. Estas veem-se obrigadas a encontrar novas soluções para harmonizar a oferta e a procura de trabalho na era digital. O objetivo da presente tese é a investigação da postura estratégica das organizações empresariais relativamente ao nomadismo digital, bem como o desenvolvimento de princípios de conceção adequados que permitam integrar com êxito os nómadas digitais no ambiente empresarial, assunto que ainda carece de investigação. O presente estudo possui três objetivos de investigação daí resultantes. O primeiro objetivo é a identificação e a análise dos fatores catalisadores no seio das organizações empresariais que as levam a integrar os nómadas digitais. Em segundo lugar, a presente tese visa esclarecer a natureza dos potenciais desafios aliados à integração dos nómadas digitais. Em terceiro lugar, são desenvolvidos princípios de conceção para organizações empresariais, no sentido de propor um processo de integração harmoniosa dos nómadas digitais. Devido à ausência de perspetivas teóricas e empíricas, optou-se por uma abordagem qualitativa e exploratória, a fim de alcançar os objetivos estabelecidos para o presente estudo. Nesse sentido, foram realizadas nove entrevistas com nómadas digitais e com empresas que os empregam. A análise do conteúdo das entrevistas revela duas motivações principais por parte das organizações empresariais em integrar nómadas digitais, designadamente, (1) Motivações proativas e (2) Motivações reativas. Da mesma forma, existem duas categorias principais de desafios colocados às organizações empresariais ao integrar nómadas digitais, designadamente, (1) Desafios organizacionais e (2) Desafios sociais. Estes desafios e motivações por parte das empresas foram enriquecidos pelas perspetivas dos próprios nómadas digitais, para criar uma imagem mais sofisticada. Por último, são apresentados cinco princípios de conceção: (1) Cultura empresarial, (2) Planeamento da carreira, (3) Governação, (4) Avaliação do desempenho e (5) Ferramentas de trabalho, que visam ajudar as organizações empresariais a integrar com sucesso os nómadas digitais. I läroplanens första kapitel beskrivs skolans uppdrag, som delvis handlar om att undervisningen ska anpassas utifrån elevernas tidigare språk och kunskaper. Likaså nämns digitala resurser vid ett flertal tillfällen i läroplanens kursplaner, bland annat som verktyg för kommunikation och lärande (Skolverket, 2016b). Hur kan digitala resurser användas för att stötta kommunikation och lärande? Studiens syfte är att bidra med kunskap om digitala resursers roll i den dagliga verksamheten för nyanlända elever genom att undersöka, ur ett designdidaktiskt och systemteoretiskt perspektiv, hur arbetet med digital teknik möjliggör språk- utveckling och lärande. Studien är en fallstudie som genomförts med kvalitativa intervjuer och observationer. Rektor, verksam lärare och fem nyanlända elever i årskurs 3–5 har deltagit och bidragit med data till studiens resultat. Klassrum och fysiska artefakter har observerats. Resultatet visar att digitala resurser skapar möjligheter och underlättar undervisningen, men de digitala resurserna kan inte ersätta den muntliga interaktionen som sker mellan lärare, elev och språkstödjare. Det visar också att olika hinder kan uppstå i arbetet med digitala resurser, däribland organisatoriska hinder som kan vara svårt att påverka. Digitala resurser är och ska ses som ett komplement både för kommunikation och lärande.

The book is divided into five sections. The first, dealing with the origins, starts from the scientific bases of the evolution of telecommunications in the nineteenth century (Bucci), addressing the developments of scientific thought that led to the revolution of the theory of fields (Morando), analysing the birth of the three fundamental forms of communication – telegraph (Maggi), telephone (Del Re) and radio (Falciasecca) – and ending with the contribution made by the Italian Navy to the development of telecommunications (Carulli, Pelosi, Selleri, Tiberio). The second section, on technical and scientific developments, presents the numerical processing of signals (Rocca), illustrating the genesis and metamorphosis of transmission (Pupolin, Benedetto, Mengali, Someda, Vannucchi), network packets (Marsan, Guadagni, Lenzini), photonics in telecommunications (Prati) and addresses the issue of research within the institutions (Fedi-Morello), dwelling in particular on the CSELT (Mossotto). AbstractThe article focuses on the value of group discussions both as a method of organisational development and as a method of empirical social research. These two perspectives are discussed as a “double meaning”, which often occurs simultaneously in different forms. The concept of “multi-stakeholder dialogues” takes up this challenge. Following on from this, dimensions of the design and research of group discussions will be discussed. The contribution relates to the subproject “Multi-stakeholder Dialogues and Qualitative Evaluation” of the joint project “#ko.vernetzt”. The subproject had the task of accompanying, structuring and researching organisational development in a networked educational institution with dialogue formats. A total of nine dialogues were conducted with different groups of participants, six of which were analysed using qualitative methods. The research perspective is based on a concept of organisations from a praxeological perspective and an understanding of organisational culture as collective conjunctive experience. Thus, the object of qualitative research is the reconstruction of typical modus operandi of the processing of requirements. The results show that structural deficits in educational organisations are reproduced and reinforced by digitisation.

AbstractTravellers with visual impairments may face substantial information gaps on their journeys by public transport. For instance, information displayed in trains, as well as on departure boards in train stations and on platforms, are often not available in acoustic or tactile form. Digital technologies, such as smartphones or smartwatches, can provide an alternative means of access. However, these alternatives do not guarantee that the user experience is comparable in value, quality and efficiency. The present case study details a participatory design process, where travellers with visual impairments co-designed a mobile app. The goal was to tackle information gaps on journeys by public transport and to learn how participatory design can facilitate the provision of comparable experiences for users with disabilities. Travellers with visual impairments were involved in a collaborative process in all project phases, including problem identification, technical feasibility, proof of concept, design and development. Participatory design contributed to a thorough understanding of the user perspective and allowed the app to be optimised for the needs of travellers with visual impairments. Furthermore, co-design proved to be an effective method for fostering awareness and knowledge about digital accessibility at all organisational levels.

In this explorative research social engineering attacks were studied, especially the ones that failed, in order to help organisations to become more resilient. Physical, phone and digital attacks were carried out using a script following the ‘social engineering cycle’. We used the COM-B model of behaviour change, refined by the Theoretical Domains Framework, to examine by means of a survey how Capability, Motivational and foremost Opportunity factors help to increase resilience of organisations against social engineering attacks. Within Opportunity, social influence seemed of extra importance. Employees who work in small sized enterprises (<50 employees) were more successful in withstanding digital social engineering attacks than employees who work in larger organisations. An explanation for this could be a greater amount of social control; these employees work in close proximity to one another, so they are able to check irregularities or warn each other. Also, having a conversation protocol installed on how to interact with outsiders, was a measure taken by all organisations where attacks by telephone failed. Therefore, it is more difficult for an outsider to get access to the organisation by means of social engineering. This paper ends with a discussion and some recommendations for organisations, e.g. the design of the work environment, to help increase their resilience against social engineering attacks.

Purpose – Tourism accommodation facilities with workstations for remote work enable stays and business activities. Different contexts of modern tourism and the hospitality industry affect the development of this innovative form of accommodation offer supported by technology, often called “workspitality”. The presented concept is the subject of the research which the authors are conducting with the aim to detect the preparedness of the hospitality industry, namely small private entrepreneurs, to respond to the challenges of competitiveness. Methodology – The methodology includes scientific analyses of the potential for affirmation of innovative accommodation concepts “workspitality” tourism product. The research design included metasearch as well as original scientific processing of data obtained through a structured questionnaire. Methods include statistics as well as qualitative methods, including focus groups and creative thinking techniques and impact the formation of conclusions which point to new scientific knowledge. Findings – The findings point to the conclusion that supply providers should learn about new competitiveness potential, so the education relating to offer organisation and investments could provide solutions to the quality organisation of the specific offer. Contribution – The paper represents a valuable contribution to an understanding of the organisation and innovation of receptive offer in tourist destinations. The research results, as well as the obtained knowledge, could affect the perception of the decision makers i.e., accommodation owners and managers, about the importance of adjustment of existing structures and facility equipment in accordance with demand preferences. The adjustment to the new demand preferences targets competitive advantage and business results. The research results reflect on the formation of scientific knowledge in the area of organisation of accommodation offer, as well as on the consideration and identification of its key elements.

Introduction. In Uruguay, the Ibirapitá Plan provides a tablet for every low-income retired woman. That motivated the research of old women’s information behaviour related to access and use of inclusive information for overcoming their disinformation. This work has the following purposes: (i) contributing to research focused on knowing and interpreting the role of social mediators and old women in the processes of access, search and appropriation of information using the Plan’s tablets; (ii) investigating users' needs of local information; and, (iii) offering such information in a participatory design of a digital solution for tablets by an interdisciplinary team. Methods. A mix of methods was applied using a questionnaire and mainly qualitative methods: in-depth interviews with qualified informants and trainers, observation of tablet-distribution workshops, focus groups and validation workshops of the digital solution designed for tablets applied in two capital cities and two small towns with the collaboration of community organisations. Analysis of the results.The analysis of the results is presented according to five dimensions of analysis and the questions that the research seeks to respond to. Discussion and conclusion. The affirmations and experiences raised regarding the technological device open a wide range of challenges to overcome and learning opportunities both for tablet users and for the production, content management and future designs of search interfaces.

It is estimated that as many as 1.5 billion people globally do not possess any form of identification [1]. Most of these people currently live in Africa and Asia. The lack of identification prevents them from accessing the basic rights and services afforded to them. In healthcare, proof of identity is required to access basic health services, and accurately monitor one’s diagnosis and treatment. This enables health care facilities to provide quality services. Without any identification, governments and development organisations cannot cater to the basic needs of these individuals. This is a key factor in the increased adoption of digital information systems in healthcare. These systems assist with validating patients’ identities. Additionally, these systems store information about patients’ medical history to allow for more effective treatment practices [2]. Digital information systems have proven to be more reliable than paper-based systems currently used in many health facilities in developing countries. Health service providers are now seeking ways to integrate these systems into their daily operations. Electronic health record systems could potentially solve many problems these facilities face. This includes issues related to data management and patient identification. These systems, when paired with biometric technologies, can remove the need for patients to carry physical identification to gain access to medical services. This would be a great benefit to rural communities. It could also assist with reducing the prevalence of fraud in these communities. Cases where individuals make use of stolen identification cards and multiple identities to access health benefits are known to occur in these areas. Existing biometric identification solutions are not designed specifically for the rural environment. Therefore, an open source biometric patient identification system was developed. The system was developed specifically for a hospital located in a rural setting. The aim was to leverage off existing technologies, and adapt it accordingly to suit the conditions faced by health service providers in these areas.

The paper attempts to substantiate the possibility of maintaining the efficiency of elderly staff through the formation of a mechanism focused on preventing and overcoming the risks of medical, biological and behavioural nature. The authors give a definition of the mechanism that allows one to maintain the desire and the ability to continue productive activities. The characteristics of success potential of aged staff, that are different from those of other age categories, have been identified. The triad of phases in the vital labour cycle is characterised from relevant medical and biological points of view, organisational requirements as well as individual challenges and needs. The biological component of human life is presented through the markers of its dynamics. The work – private life balance components have been explored. The main reasons of role conflicts substantiating the imbalance of elderly workers’ work and private life have been identified. The risks of weakened competitiveness of elderly workers and reduction of their endurance capacity have been characterised. Some concepts for mitigating the situation of work – private life imbalance through time management, health management and social support have been developed. The influence of medico-biomedical risk factors on retention of elderly employees’ performance has been demonstrated. The reasons causing risks in achieving ageing staff’s success have been grouped, and the subjects initiating these risks have been identified.

The RAMI4.0 model consists of three axes; the Layers axis, the Hierarchy axis, and the Life Cycle Value Stream axis. This model unifies the various aspects of I4.0 to allow data generated from manufacturing and business activities to be shared effectively. The Manufacturing Chain Management software aims to provide a platform where all three axes and their associated data are tightly integrated and can be used to provide I4.0 connectivity as well as insights into the manufacturing supply chain. A data framework is proposed whereby the data from these activities can be collected and used to make more insightful decisions about an organisations value chain, value stream, and the life cycle of their product portfolio. The MCM platform is aimed at SMEs, which generally has lesser financial ability to invest into I4.0 technologies. Hence, the MCM platform is designed to be flexible and scalable whilst maintaining compliance with international I4.0 standards. Loviisa NPP has two VVER 440-type pressurised-water reactors. The automation renewal project started in the beginning of 2005 when Fortum signed a contract with a consortium of AREVA-NP and Siemens AG. The functional concept of the new I&C is defined in terms of task categories. In normal operational conditions the nuclear power unit is controlled by normal process control functions. Also safety-related preventive protection functions may be activated. Reactor protection functions are activated in operational transients and in accidents. Also diverse manual and automatic backup of the Reactor Protection System is foreseen. After an operational transient or an accident the operators steer the plant to a safe state using plant shutdown or accident management functions. The new control systems and Man Machine Interface (MMI) will be implemented using safety and non-safety digital control platforms and user interfaces. In addition to these conventional non-digital platform with dedicated MMI will be provided to control selected critical functions. Loviisa NPP is using Emergency Operating Procedures (EOP) designed together with AREVA-NP, EdF and Fortum consisting of event and state oriented procedures. This set of procedures is being adapted to a functional concept of the new I&C together with AREVA-NP and Fortum. The rules for organisation of operation with different EOPs and MMIs and the principles and methods of computerization of the EOPs are defined. The rules for organisation of operation with different EOPs and MMIs are designed taking into account requirements set for different task categories and criticality of the actions to be performed by the operator. Priority to the safety MMI is given in case of critical actions. Conventional MMI is used if fast operator response is required. The principles and methods of computerization of the EOPs are consistent with the concept developed for the French EPR and also for the new Chinese plant. This concept takes into account the N4 plant feedback. One of the main targets of the EOP computerizations is to keep the design of operation and support screens close to the present ones.

Its striking architecture owes much to its Gold Rush past which has also given it a diverse cultural heritage. The creative industries, while not well recognised as such, contribute well to the local economy. The many festivals, museums and library exhibitions attract visitors from the metropolitan centre of Victoria especially. The Bendigo Creative Industries Hub was a local council initiative while the Ulumbarra Theatre is located within the City’s 1860’s Sandhurst Gaol. Many festivals keep the city culturally active and are supported by organisations such as Bendigo Bank. The Bendigo Writers Festival, the Bendigo Queer Film Festival, The Bendigo Invention & Innovation Festival, Groovin the Moo and the Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival are well established within the community. A regional accelerator and Tech School at La Trobe University are touted as models for other regional Victorian cities. The city has a range of high quality design agencies, while the software and digital content sector is growing with embeddeds working in agriculture and information management systems. Employment in Film, TV and Radio and Visual Arts has remained steady in Bendigo for a decade while the Music and Performing Arts sector grew quite well over the same period.

The MIMI project was initiated by the DSI in partnership with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), the HSRC and UKZN. The purpose of this initiative was to develop an innovative tool capable of assessing and measuring the innovation landscape in municipalities, thus enabling municipalities to adopt innovative practices to improve service delivery. The outcome of the implementation testing, based on the participation of 22 municipalities, demonstrated the value and the capacity of MIMI to produce innovation maturity scores for municipalities. The digital assessment tool looked at how a municipality, as an organisation, responds to science, technology and innovation (STI) linked to service delivery, and the innovation capabilities and readiness of the municipality and the officials themselves. The tool is also designed to recommend areas of improvements in adopting innovative practices and nurturing an innovation mindset for impactful municipal service delivery. The plan going forward is to conduct learning forums to train municipal officials on how to use the MIMI digital platform, inform them about the nationwide implementation rollout plan and support municipal officials to engage in interactive and shared learnings to allow them to move to higher innovation maturity levels. The virtual launch featured a keynote address by the DSI Director-General, Dr Phil Mjwara; Prof Mehmet Akif Demircioglu from the National University of Singapore gave an international perspective on innovation measurements in the public sector; and messages of support were received from MIMI partners, delivered by Prof Mosa Moshabela, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) of Research at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and Prof Leickness Simbayi, Acting CEO of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC).
