The essays in this symposium on the work of Dirk Hartog encompass meditations on legal positivism and the histories of slavery, civil rights, and women’s rights as well as contemporary analyses of spousal abuse and the dependency of adult children. That wide range of subjects, approaches, and concerns might be puzzling were it not for the wide substantive, methodological, and theoretical range in Hartog’s own oeuvre. Hartog’s work has been so generative for other scholars because of his simultaneous engagement with history and law, with fact and theory, with the whole sweep of the nineteenth century and the most minute detail of a person’s life. In describing in this introduction what makes Hartog Hartog, I emphasize the unique blend of professional commitments and personal sensibilities he brings to his work: the sensitivity with which he approaches history; the humanity with which he treats his historical subjects; the dexterity with which he analyzes the law; and the sophistication with which his human and legal stories yield up jurisprudential insights. I also, respectfully, disagree with Hartog himself on the essence of his work. Where he laments that he exists in a “muddle in the middle”—writing histories of a problematic “inbetweenness”—I see him as making the messy lived reality of legal history cognizable to modern reader. His work reveals the simultaneity of multiple and overlapping legal regimes as they shaped and were shaped by the human needs of real people.

Conservation translocations have become increasingly popular for ‘rewilding’ areas that have lost their native fauna. These multispecies translocations are complex and need to consider the requirements of each individual species as well as the influence of likely interactions among them. The Dirk Hartog Island National Park Ecological Restoration Project, Return to 1616, aspires to restore ecological function to Western Australia’s largest island. Since 2012, pest animals have been eradicated, and conservation translocations of seven fauna species have been undertaken, with a further six planned. Here, we present a synthesis of the innovative approaches undertaken in restoring the former faunal assemblage of Dirk Hartog Island and the key learnings gathered as the project has progressed.

Conservation practitioners require cost-effective and repeatable remotely sensed data for assistive monitoring. This paper tests the ability of standard remotely piloted aircraft (DJI Phantom 4 Pro) imagery to discriminate between plant species in a rangeland environment. Flights were performed over two 0.3–0.4 ha exclusion plot sites, established as controls to protect vegetation from translocated animal disturbance on Dirk Hartog Island, Western Australia. Comparisons of discriminatory variables, classification potential, and optimal flight height were made between plot sites with different plant species diversity. We found reflectance bands and height variables to have high differentiation potential, whilst measures of texture were less useful for multisegmented plant canopies. Discrimination between species varied with omission errors ranging from 13 to 93%. Purposely resampling c. 5 mm imagery as captured at 20–25 m above terrain identified that a flight height of 120 m would improve capture efficiency in future surveys without hindering accuracy. Overall accuracy at a site with low species diversity (n = 4) was 70%, which is an encouraging result given the imagery is limited to visible spectral bands. With higher species diversity (n = 10), the accuracy reduced to 53%, although it is expected to improve with additional bands or grouping like species. Findings suggest that in rangeland environments with low species diversity, monitoring using a standard RPA is viable.

Female sea turtles are promiscuous, with clutches of eggs often sired by multiple males and rates of multiple paternity varying greatly within and across species. We investigated levels of multiple paternity in loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from three rookeries in Western Australia by analysing polymorphic species-specific genetic markers. We predicted that the level of multiple paternity would be related to female population size and hence the large rookery at Dirk Hartog Island would have higher rates of multiple paternity than two smaller mainland rookeries at Gnaraloo Bay and Bungelup Beach. Contrary to our prediction, we found highly variable rates of multiple paternity among the rookeries that we sampled, which was unrelated to female population size (25% at Bungelup Beach, 86% at Gnaraloo Bay, and 36% at Dirk Hartog Island). Approximately 45 different males sired 25 clutches and the average number of sires per clutch ranged from 1.2 to 2.1, depending on the rookery sampled. The variance in rates of multiple paternity among rookeries suggests that operational sex ratios are variable in Western Australia. Periodic monitoring would show whether the observed patterns of multiple paternity for these three rookeries are stable over time, and our data provide a baseline for detecting shifts in operational sex ratios.

The white-winged fairy-wren (Malurus leucopterus) exhibits striking plumage colour variation between the Australian mainland and two islands (Dirk Hartog Island and Barrow Island) off the coast of Western Australia. Adult males on the mainland are bright blue with white wings and adult males on the two islands are black with white wings. To examine evolutionary relationships within this species, we sequenced 980 base pairs of two mitochondrial genes from 34 individuals from both islands and five mainland sites. Birds on Barrow Island were the most genetically distinct. Specimens from Dirk Hartog shared a unique character with, and were most similar to, birds from the Western Australian mainland. The black-and- white-plumaged subspecies from the two islands were not each other's closest relatives. Mapping of plumage evolution produced two equally parsimonious hypotheses: (1) black plumage arose from blue plumage convergently on the two islands, or (2) black plumage arose from blue plumage once and was followed by a re-evolution of blue plumage in mainland Western Australia birds. Levels of genetic differentiation in this species were low but genetic differentiation was discovered between morphologically identical eastern and western populations of the mainland subspecies, which is evidence for a current barrier to gene flow on mainland Australia.

Conservation translocations are increasingly used worldwide to prevent extinctions and support ecological restoration projects. These translocations involve a lot of uncertainty, particularly when species are introduced to ecosystems where they have not previously coexisted. Many historical translocations in Australia and globally have failed due to insufficient baseline data and inadequate post-translocation monitoring. Contemporary translocations can aim to improve translocation outcomes by increasing baseline data collection and developing robust post-release monitoring for translocated species. The development of environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques has facilitated the collection of information from environments with minimal disturbance to species. The advancement of such passive monitoring techniques has allowed for increased ability to monitor and study cryptic and rare species. The Shark Bay rufous hare-wallaby (Lagorchestes hirsutus bernieri) and the banded hare-wallaby (Lagostrophus fasciatus) were introduced to Dirk Hartog Island (DHI) from founder populations on the Bernier and Dorre islands in Shark Bay, Western Australia, as part of the Dirk Hartog Island National Park Ecological Restoration Program. Once found across large areas of south-west and central Australia, the populations on the Bernier and Dorre islands are the last natural populations of the two species due to habitat loss and predation post-European colonisation. As the rufous hare-wallaby and banded hare-wallaby have not been previously recorded on DHI, there was uncertainty regarding their successful establishment on the island and their potential interactions with each other and other species involved in the restoration program. The diets of rufous hare-wallabies and banded hare-wallabies were investigated through the DNA metabarcoding of scat samples from three islands in Shark Bay, Western Australia. This researched aimed to assess dietary overlap and the potential for resource competition between the two hare-wallaby species. Additionally, the difference in diet between the founder populations to their post-translocation diets on DHI were analysed as an indication of dietary flexibility and adaptability to environmental changes. The diets of both species of hare-wallaby were found to be broad, containing taxa from multiple plant families including invasive weeds. On DHI there was a high degree of overlap in the diets of the two species, indicating a risk of resource competition. The diets of the translocated populations differed significantly from the founder populations, which demonstrated flexible foraging behaviour and signified that rufous hare-wallabies and banded hare-wallabies are excellent candidates for future translocation projects on other islands and within mainland reserves. This thesis is the first study to define and compare the diets of the Shark Bay rufous hare-wallaby and the banded hare-wallaby using scat DNA. The understanding of diet is fundamental to ecology and an essential consideration in restoration projects involving new species interactions. The findings from this research can benefit the fulfilment of translocation success criteria related to species establishment and health targets for the new populations. By demonstrating the dietary breadth and flexibility of Shark Bay’s hare-wallabies, this thesis exemplifies the utility of scat DNA in supporting the conservation of translocated fauna.

The aim of this thesis is to broaden knowledge about the possibilities of using modern stubble plough with minimum tillage in agricultural production. In order to evaluate the work of selected indicators stubble machines was based small ? plot experiments at selected station. The experiment was evaluated lumps, depth of tillage and crop residue incorporation of selected machines. Further economic evaluaiton was carried out operating costs of used machines. The use of machines were evaluated according to the results obtained reccomended in agricultural practice.

In January 1942, President Roosevelt set up the National War Labor Board to reduce strikes, control wage inflation, develop national policies for union-management relations, and resolve disputes between labor and companies for the duration for the war. This chapter explains the dire situation facing the United States and its allies in the winter of 1941-42, how the NWLB came into being, the board’s members, and the backgrounds and outlook of the young economists and attorneys who did the bulk of the board’s work. Philip Murray, the president of the Congress of Industrial Organizations and the Steelworkers union, called the staffers “the Labor Board boys.”

This chapter focuses on the birds in Bermuda. Prior to 1600, it is estimated that half a million pairs of devil birds bred on Bermuda, making it, in essence, a gigantic seabird colony. The cedar trees that covered Bermuda were endemic and low-growing; they tilted in high winds, uprooting and leaving small cavities beneath. The birds used their black beaks, which ended in a graceful hook, to dig twelve-foot burrows beneath the trees, and used their webbed feet to push the dirt out behind them. The sailors called it the cahow after its sound. It would be centuries before it would emerge as a species of gadfly petrel — a sleek-bodied, hollow-boned soarer with three-foot-long, paddle-shaped wings. In 1906, Dr. Louis Mowbray, who would become the first director of the Bermuda Aquarium, found a live bird in a hole on one of the Castle Harbor Islands; he classified it as a Peale's petrel from New Zealand, blown off course. A decade elapsed before an ornithologist realized that Mowbray's live bird was actually the real thing: a Bermuda petrel.

A semi-empirical analytical formulation of the induced velocities generated by the fuselage shell of the HART II wind tunnel model in the volume around the rotor is derived from computational fluid dynamics velocity data. The operational conditions investigated range from vertical descent, shallow descent, level flight and climb to vertical ascent and from forward to quartering flight. The analytical induced velocity model can directly be used to account for the inflow at the blade elements and also allows for analytical or numerical integration of rotor wake convection to compute the associated displacements of rotor blade tip vortices travelling downstream within this velocity field. The model's influence on the major flow field variables around the rotor disk and the wake trajectory is demonstrated. Since the method is generic it is anticipated that the effect of any kind of fuselage can be accounted for this way and it may be used within any comprehensive code for blade element aerodynamics, within prescribed wake codes and even free-wake codes for influencing the wake convection.

Abstract Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) causes leaks and plugging of fire protection sprinkler system (FPS) components, often within months of installation. MIC affects all types of FPS and system components and is accompanied by other forms of corrosion, principally those related to the action of oxygen. The principal source of microbes, oxygen, inorganic and organic nutrients for microbial activity are materials left in the FPS during construction and make-up water. Water is added to most FPS frequently, thereby adding new microbes, nutrients, and oxygen on a regular basis. MIC in FPS can be very severe due to microbial and chemical formation of deposits and a generous supply of oxygen, especially to the areas of the FPS closest to the make-up water source. Proper diagnosis and treatment of MIC in FPS requires biological and chemical analyses of water and deposits from the FPS and make-up water to the FPS. Pipe samples from various locations in the FPS should be examined to determine the distribution and severity of MIC and the chemical nature of deposits and corrosion products. These data will provide information necessary to determine what type of treatment, if any, is necessary to keep or return the FPS to fully functional and safe status. New FPS should be treated to remove oils, dirt, and other materials which harbor bacteria, provide food for microbes, and shield bacteria from the action of biocides. FPS having existing, advanced deposits and corrosion should be cleaned to remove these materials. All FPS should be equipped with a device to deliver anti-microbial and oxygen scavenging chemicals to the FPS and all water entering the FPS. Traditional treatments using oxidizing biocides such as chlorine, even at levels far in excess of those required to control microbial growth in waters, do not control microbes or corrosion in FPS pipes and, in fact, contribute to generalized corrosion. This is due to the inability of the biocides to penetrate oils, dirt, and other materials on the internal surface of the FPS components. Tetrakishydroxymethyl phosphonium sulfate (THPS), a biocide used in other industries, has proven to help clean oils, etc. from the pipe surface, kill all MIC bacteria, and eliminate oxygen in water added to the FPS. These actions lead to control of microbes, slimes, deposits, MIC, and oxygen-related corrosion. THPS also has very favorable environmental and toxicity profiles which should make its use in FPS acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction over FPS and water suppliers.

Abstract Test results are presented involving axial rubbing of a test rotor with an overhung disk to investigate test results cited by Den Hartog [1]. Point rubbing was introduced via a rod on the inside (motor-drive side) and outside faces of the overhung disk for multiple operating conditions (running speeds below and above the critical speed) and multiple shaft configurations. For supercritical running speeds, no change in the response spectrum was observed. For subcritical running speeds, a slight increase of response at twice running speed was observed. “Face” axial rubbing was introduced by forcing a contact between the outside face of the disk and a flat surface. Rubbing at running speeds below the critical speed produced: (i) a small backwards component at the running speed frequency, (ii) a large backward-whirl component at twice running speed, and (iii) a very large, twice-running-speed, forward-whirl component. Rubbing at running speeds well above the critical speed produced a subsynchronous forward component near the critical speed. The large twice-running-speed results due to rubbing at the outside face were comparable to Den Hartog’s. However, point rubbing on the inside face did not produce the subsynchronous backward-whirl response cited by Den Hartog. Analysis of a nonslipping kinematic whirl condition (comparable to classical dry friction whipping) for the face of an overhung disk against a stationary surface predicts reverse asynchronous whirl; however, testing over a wide range of parameters failed to produce this response. None of the present test results produced the types of very high vibration levels and grave consequences that have been produced in test rigs for conventional, radial dry-friction whirl and whip.

The paper describes a technology for cross-fertilization of berry bushes with simultaneous treatment of the space between the rows and technical equipment for its implementation, developed by ITSA – branch of FSAC VIM. The developed combined unit serves to the implementation of the technology for soil tillage with a disk harrow with adjustable working width in the space between the rows of the berry bushes under treatment, and it is able to carry out subsurface band root treatment with liquid fertilizers and foliage spraying of the bushes simultaneously and (or) separately.

A linear quadratic Gaussian controller for active vibratory loads reduction in helicopters is proposed based on a revisited higher harmonic control input. Conventional individual blade control input is redefined by using N-1/rev blade phase lead, N/rev collective, and N+1/rev blade phase lag signals by 1/rev frequencies modulation from the multi-blade coordinate transform. HART-II rotor is analyzed by the multi-body dynamic analysis combined with improved rotation formula on the geometrically exact beam equations equipped with the unsteady dynamic wake. A linear time-invariant representation for HART-II rotor is identified from the responses obtained by recursive Fourier series filter. A MATLAB/Simulink closed-loop control simulation is designed using the identified state-space realization. The N/rev vibratory loads are reduced by 50% while the steady trim function is valid, and the linear control results match well with the nonlinear responses. Furthermore, the multi-variable closed-loop stability estimated by the loop transfer functions using the disk margin analysis provide both gain and phase margins to the present control system.

This paper presents a comparison of multi-fidelity approaches for the HART-II rotor noise prediction using the high-fidelity and multi-disciplinary rotorcraft analysis software suite CREATETM-AV Helios. The acoustic simulations are performed using the noise prediction tools AARON/ANOPP2 and PSU-WOPWOP. Both permeable and impermeable formulations of the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings equation are considered for noise predictions. The HART-II baseline and 3/rev high harmonic control (HHC) minimum vibration cases are simulated and validated against test measurements. Compared with the free-wake simulation, the highfidelity CFD/CSD loose coupling simulations agree better with the measured data but still under-predict the advancing side airloads. Both impermeable and permeable surface approaches show better noise predictions than the free-wake approach in terms of noise directivity and amplitude. As the finest wake-grid resolution reduces from 7.5% to 5% chord, the impermeable surface strategy shows an increment of 3 dB in maximum mid-frequency sound pressure level (SPL) on the advancing side of the mid-frequency SPL contour. The maximum mid-frequency SPL on the retreating side of the vehicle is only increased by 1 dB. At a finer wake-grid resolution, the permeable surface approach does not show improvement in blade-vortex interaction (BVI) noise prediction on the advancing side of the rotor disk.

Resumen Este documento ha efectuado una revisión de literatura para esclarecer si la salvaguarda del medioambiente requiere actualmente la adopción de políticas de decrecimiento. Tras exponer las visiones de las economías neoclásica y ecológica sobre la relación entre crecimiento económico y sostenibilidad medioambiental y la propuesta de conciliar ambos fenómenos mediante un desarrollo sostenible, se analiza la posibilidad de que el desacople posibilite tal conciliación, desde una perspectiva teórica y empírica. A continuación, se exponen y debaten los tres grandes posicionamientos existentes en la literatura sobre el crecimiento económico: los partidarios del crecimiento, los partidarios del decrecimiento y los agnósticos ante el mismo; y se presentan las políticas que desde esas posiciones se propugnan, bien orientadas a la eficiencia y soluciones técnicas o bien a la suficiencia y cambios en los niveles y patrones de producción y consumo. Finalmente, se apuntan una serie de gaps de la literatura, que convendría corregir para realmente hacer operativas y eficaces las políticas que se proponen. Abstract This paper has carried out a literature review to answer the question of whether safeguarding the environment currently requires the adoption of degrowth policies. After presenting the neoclassical and ecological economic views on the relationship between economic growth and environmental sustainability and the proposal to reconcile both phenomena through sustainable development, the possibility of the decoupling that could make such a reconciliation possible is analysed from both a theoretical and empirical perspective. Next, the three main positions in the literature on economic growth are presented and debated: those in favour of growth, those in favour of degrowth and those agnostic towards it; and the policies advocated from these positions, whether oriented towards efficiency and technical solutions or towards sufficiency and changes in the levels and patterns of production and consumption. Finally, a series of existing gaps in the literature are pointed out, which should be corrected in order to make the policies proposed operational and effective.
