Анотація:

- This paper is discussing the social innovation represented by the alternative food networks in Italy. With reference to the scientific debate, the analysis is foSummaries cussed on three main issues: the diversity of the networks, their common principles and the strategies of inter-connection among the different networks. These networks are based on the development of direct relationships between producers and consumers and on processes of food re-localisation. They counteract the dominant agro-food system by promoting quality products distributed through short chains. The emerging inter-connection between the various collective practices linked to the question of food production is interpreted as an alternative globalization. Initiatives promoted by peasant organizations of Latin American, African and Asian countries tend to be reinforced by the connection with the alternative practices of food producers and reflexive consumers of Western countries.Key words: social innovation; alternative food networks; peasant agriculture; short chains; critical consumers; inter-connection.

Dit artikel gaat over de management control van dochterondernemingen van Nederlandse moederondernemingen in Centraal Europa, in het bijzonder in Polen, Tsjechië, Slowakije en Hongarije. Het onderzoek verkent de invloed van multinationale strategieën en verschillen in nationale cultuur tussen Nederland en landen in Centraal Europa op de management control van deze dochterondernemingen. Enerzijds blijken eendimensionale stra tegieën een bepalende factor voor het management control patroon te zijn. Zo overheerst bij de globale strategie, die is gericht op het realiseren van wereldwijde efficiency, de persoonlijk -gecentraliseerde en formeel-bureaucratische sturing. Bij de meerlandenstrategie, die beoogt landspecifieke concurrentie voordelen te bereiken, is de resultaatsturing en sturing door middel van socialisatie dominant. De mogelijke invloeden van de landscultuur zijn bij deze eendimensionale strategieën afwezig of worden ‘weggedrukt’ door de effecten van de strategie. Anderzijds lijken meerdimensionale strategieën (in de zin van combinaties van twee multinationale strategieën) weinig bepalend te zijn voor het management controlpatroon. In die omstandigheden is wel enige invloed van dimensies van landscultuur merkbaar.

Abstrak. Dalam perekonomian Indonesia, kopi memiliki peranan penting baik sebagai sumber perolehan devisa maupun sebagai sumber penghidupan petani yang tersebar di seluruh Indonesia. Salah satu sentra produksi kopi nasional yang terkenal di Indonesia berada di Kabupaten Aceh Tengah yang terletak di Provinsi Aceh. Menghadapi persaingan usaha yang semakin ketat, perlu menerapkan strategi-strategi pengembangan yang dapat mendukung pengembangan industri tersebut. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada “Kampung Kupi Gayo”. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi faktor internal dan eksternal yang dihadapi usaha “Kampung Kupi Gayo” serta menentukan strategi pengembangan usaha tersebut dengan menggunakan analisis faktor strategis Internal/ IFAS, analisis faktor strategis eksternal/ EFAS, dan analisis SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threat). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa faktor strategis internal yang menjadi faktor kekuatan dan kelemahan usaha Kampung Kupi Gayo ada tujuh faktor. Adapun faktor yang menjadi kekuatan dominan usaha Kampung Kupi Gayo yaitu Lokasi usaha strategis, dan harga produk bersaing. Sedangkan yang menjadi kelemahan dominan usaha Kampung Kupi Gayo yaitu Jenis produk yang dihasilkan masih kurang. Faktor-Faktor Strategis Eksternal yang menjadi faktor peluang dan ancaman bagi usaha "Kampung Kupi Gayo" ada lima faktor. Adapun faktor yang menjadi peluang dominan usaha Kampung Kupi Gayo yaitu pangsa pasar kopi olahan masih sangat besar. Sedangkan yang menjadi ancaman dominan bagi usaha "Kampung Kupi Gayo" yaitu persaingan usaha sejenis. Strategi yang dapat digunakan Kampung Kupi Gayo yang diperoleh dari analisis SWOT adalah strategi agresif, yaitu strategi yang memungkinkan usaha ini untuk terus mengembangkan usahanya, meningkatkan pertumbuhan, melakukan ekspansi dan meraih kemajuan secara maksimal.Business Development Strategies Arabica Coffee Processing (Case Study: "Kampung Kupi Gayo", Aceh Tengah RegencyAbstract. In the Indonesian economy, coffee has an important role both as a source of foreign exchange gain and as a source of livelihood of farmers spread throughout Indonesia. One of the most famous national coffee production centers in Indonesia is located in Aceh Tengah district located in Aceh Province. In the face of increasingly fierce business competition, it is necessary to implement development strategies that can support the development of the industry. This research was conducted on "Kampung Kupi Gayo". The purpose of this study is to identify internal and external factors facing the "Kampung Kupi Gayo" business as well as to determine the business development strategy using Internal / IFAS strategic factor analysis, external strategic factor analysis / EFAS, and SWOT analysis (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity , and Threat). The result of the research shows that internal strategic factors which become the strength and weakness factor of "Kampung Kupi Gayo" are seven factors. The factors that become the dominant strength of "Kampung Kupi Gayo" business is the location of strategic business, and the price of competing products. While the dominant weakness business "Kampung Kupi Gayo" that type of product produced is still lacking. External Strategic Factors that become the opportunity and threat factors for the "Kampung Kupi Gayo" business are five factors. The factors that become the dominant opportunity of Kupi Gayo Village business is the market share of processed coffee is still very large. While the dominant threat to the "Kampung Kupi Gayo" business is a similar business competition. The strategy that can be used "Kampung Kupi Gayo" obtained from the SWOT analysis is an aggressive strategy, a strategy that allows this business to continue to expand its business, increase growth, expand and achieve maximum progress.

Анотація:

This paper is based on empirical observations analyzed by the dominant work and socio-economic strategies of the population of East Sarajevo. Determinants that influence the profiling of these strategies are work and socioeconomic strategies of families in which the respondents come from, their socioprofessional status and position in the labor market. The data shows that the most common strategy among respondents with formal employment and the strategy of substitution is in agriculture. Least prevalent strategy is entrepreneurial.

In implementing trade policy measures, governments usually select from a range of instruments including quotas, subsidies (explicit or implicit) and tariffs. In this paper we consider the potential gain of a government pursuing a two-part trade policy: an import license for entry, along with a per-unit tariff on imports. The model is a three-step game between home and foreign countries in the Cournot duopoly. The paper demonstrates that two-part trade policy is dominant.

Анотація:

This research report considers how dominant firms can establish when their competitive strategies are not anti-competitive. It argues that a dominant firm‟s actions can either be pro-competitive, thus conduct which competition law is designed to protect; or, anti-competitive and therefore prohibited. It questions whether there are any key principles that are emerging from South African competition law practice and decided cases that can provide some guidelines to dominant firms on whether planned action is prohibited conduct? It also questions whether the enforcement of the South African Competition Act‟s abuse of dominance provisions may have led to the chilling of competition. The research utilised the following methodologies: expert interviews; case studies; and, review of the competition authorities‟ enforcement actions. The report concludes that abuse of dominance cases are highly fact-intensive, industry specific and outcomes are effects-based. As such, it is difficult to prescribe a general rules-based compliance program to guide dominant firms in their development of competitive strategies. Copyright

The dominant design concept describes the evolution from one dominant design to a new one, or in a new industry, the evolution to a set of standards and features that becomes a dominant design for that particular product or sector. Typically the dominant design is used to describe industry trends. This thesis takes the bottom up perspective, i.e. the company's perspective, to identify if, or what parts, of the dominant design model that can be used as an explanatory tool of innovation in the two ERP companies chosen. This thesis has found that some parts of the dominant design model can be used to describe innovation in our two case companies. However, the model has to be altered to fit the particular needs of the software industry and exclude the concept of process innovation, which is a part of the original dominant design model. By considering a company’s existing situation, e.g. customers, market share, partnerships etc. and fitting these facts into our altered dominant design model it should be possible to explain actions undertaken by an ERP company.

Анотація:

In this dissertation I investigated how non-dominant firms manage their nonmarket environment when they face the presence of firms with strong political and market power. I conducted a case study of the telecommunications market in Mexico, Chile and Uruguay. A total of 52 informants were interviewed including regulatory and legal affairs executives, innovation executives, regulators and government officials, scholars, and consultants. I argue that an institutional framework that imposes barriers for competition in the market through limited access to resources and lack of clarity in the decision-making results in less innovation or innovation at a slower pace. Also, actions taken by the regulatory authorities in favor of competition impose competitive pressures in the market that result in more innovation. The results show that non-dominant firms in these markets develop nonmarket strategies following two strategic perspectives: operational and prospective. These strategies rely on a different set of tactics and rhetoric compared to dominant firms and its effectiveness depend on the characteristics of the institutional environment. This dissertation attempts to provide a better understanding of the competitive industry dynamics helpful for the design and implementation of integrated innovation and nonmarket strategies. Additionally, the results of this study might provide insight for antitrust and industry-specific regulators that aim to incentivize innovation in the market.

Public news is a relevant source of information describing events occurring in the real world. Despite information leakages and fake news readers are often willing to pay to gather information conveyed through the news. In this work, we investigated the effects of micro news sentiment on the equity market. Therefore, according to several market theories of Behavioral Finance, we want to understand if public news is interesting for the equity market investor. The Adaptive Market Hypothesis is one of these theories and states that also if markets are efficient in general, inefficiency may affect them in particular periods. These inefficiencies may then leave open profit opportunities for the informed investor. For this reason, public news could have an important impact on investor's choices. In the second chapter we present the Efficient Market Hypothesis, Behavioral Finance, and the Adaptive Market Hypothesis. After the basic theoretical introduction, we report a review of the available literature regarding studies on the effect of the news on markets. The reported papers cover many relevant aspects regarding how to measure the news impact on the market returns. The main factors extracted from the news are: the news sentiment, the cumulated sentiment, the news relevance and novelty, and the news topics and categories. The third chapter tries to describe the events happening in the market that could be conveyed through the news. At first, the events characterizing the value generation process and the highly complex firms' interconnection are described. The description then moves on to events concerning the firms' evaluation process, which is split into two sections: the former about fundamental indicators evaluation and the latter about perspectival views and ratings. In the last section of the chapter events regarding the ownership structure of a firm are reported and a possible path of transmission from the news to the effects on the market is outlined. The fourth chapter describes the market data and news sentiment database and reports statistics about the considered stocks. The description of the data also reports statistics about category groups, a high-level grouping of news events in a hierarchical taxonomy of financial-related news events. The fifth chapter presents news-based strategies for intraday open to close trading. The strategies are based on a naive beauty context model that takes into account only indicators generated by firm-specific public news sentiment or volume subdivided by category group. Three main patterns emerged from the analysis and characterize different category groups: sell on news volumes, buy according to news sentiment, and sell according to news sentiment. The analysis has also shown that many portfolio strategies based on category groups are characterized by a reversal effect overnight, while few others by a continuation trend. The sixth chapter presents a more complex model that tries to enhance baseline models with the use of public news. The baseline models rely on three different portfolio optimization criteria: Sharpe Ratio, Second-order Stochastic Dominance, and Scaled Second-order Stochastic Dominance. The Second-order Stochastic Dominance optimization criteria are based on enhanced indexation, where the optimal portfolio is supposed to be the best portfolio dominating the reference market index. The aim of the models is to understand which category groups bring useful information for portfolio optimization. The discussion of the results is divided into two parts, the former reports profitability and turnover results for the three baseline strategies, while the latter reports the results for the different category groups and cumulation periods. In the last part of the chapter a series of possible further researches are proposed.

Clostridium difficile is a common and potentially fatal cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea and pseudomembranous colitis worldwide. It has been isolated from patients and their surroundings, in healthcare facilities and from the community. C. difficile is able to survive for many months on inanimate surfaces in the form of spores. PCR ribotyping is used in the UK to characterise and identify strain diversity. Investigating how the most problematic strains respond to cleaning regimes may influence the control of disease. This work used the University Hospitals of Leicester Trust as a case study for this purpose of understanding the epidemiology of this pathogen within healthcare facilities. Five individual agar media were compared based on their abilities to recover and resuscitate damaged ribotype 027 spores, a strain associated with disease outbreaks and increased severity. Controlled laboratory experiments with a sub-lethal dose of a germicide were conducted before C. difficile recovery from hospital wards. An additional two sampling campaigns acquired environmental strains. C. difficile isolation after routine cleaning demonstrated the inefficiency of the current recovery regime as C. difficile spores were recovered using direct contact plates, enrichment broths, and resuscitation media. This study used layering of non-selective agar over selective agar, identifying a potential link in the proportions of media following the use of sponges in environmental sampling. All strains were characterised by ribotyping; ribotype 027 was isolated from all sampling cohorts. A four-month epidemiological study was conducted into the ribotype prevalence and distribution from C. difficile-positive faecal specimens. A second survey investigated these effects with a modification of C. difficile detection from faecal samples. Hydrogen peroxide vapour is currently being explored as a means of decontamination of healthcare-associated infections. Inactivation kinetics of ribotype 027 spores were analysed in response to vapour and liquid exposure of hydrogen peroxide. No reports thus far have explored such kinetics and controlled decontamination with both clinical and non-clinical strains. Evidence strongly suggests spores can be inactivated with its application. Furthermore, this study revealed there appears to be significant differences in susceptibility and inactivation of different C. difficile ribotypes.

The sixth chapter describes the making of a concrete document for a designated time, i.e., the Strategic plan for gradual removal of barriers in 2021–2030, which was created for the Brno City Advisory Board for Accessibility. The authors chose to introduce it via the perspective of a dialogic space that enables to organize the procedure composed from a variety of voices, opinions, and arguments. The heteroglossia metaphor is exemplified by the concept of “carnival” of Mikhail Mikhailovich Bakhtin, when “strangers” speaking in different “voices” are brought together. At the beginning, there were activities by several individuals mostly from NGO and academic environment, who started to integrate and institutionalize accessibility policies. For the latter, political support of established actors was necessary, and thanks to it, the above-mentioned Advisory Board was founded. Therefore, the positions of the bursar and the chair of the board are labeled “victorious voices” in our “carnival”. Subsequently, the semi-structured interviews tried to determine visions, attitudes and priorities of all involved persons, namely “the voices of Advisory board members”. Their strategic plan defined target groups, on whom the accessibility policies would focus (senior citizens, parents with strollers, wheelchair users and people with sight or hearing impairment). At the same time, the “legislative voices” needed to be respected, which were to ensure accessibility for all social groups. The principles of tactical urbanism were used to make space accessible within functional wholes and according to societal needs. The final document was also influenced by the “voices of users” that helped to identify spaces, which should be prioritized. Our “voices of producers” had a dominant influence over the working draft of all three parts of the document (analysis, suggestions, and implementation). What appeared to be of crucial importance, was the definition of individual goals, measures and activities leading to the realization of the vision (processional, realization and educational priorities in the document). The process of creation also allowed “expert voices”, who modelled the final form of the document in meetings and workshops. Last but not least, “voices of approval“ (namely, the city council and municipality) took part in the process that authorized the strategic plan and rounded off more than three years of its complex construction.

The northeastern United States is a diverse region containing the seven most densely populated States in the Nation. Agriculture in the Northeast is varied, including vegetable production, ornamentals and fruits, animal production, and field crops. Forests are a dominant land use in the northern parts of the region and in the Appalachian Mountains. Northeast farmers are already experiencing crop damage from extreme precipitation. Wet springs are delaying planting and harvest dates and reducing yields for grain and vegetables. Heavy rain in the Northeast has increased more than any other region in the country.

Анотація:

Begomoviruses, which constitute one genus of the Geminiviridae family, are single-stranded DNA viruses that infect many dicotyledonous crops important to large agricultural industries as well as to subsistence growers. Although all begomoviruses are transmitted by whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci), they have proven difficult to manage even with heavy insecticide applications. The begomovirus, Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), has been a problem in tomato production in Israel since the 1950s and in the United States since 1997. Approximately 89 begomoviruses have now been reported to infect tomato. Crop losses due to begomoviruses such as TYLCV and Tomato mottle virus (ToMoV), are limiting factors in tomato cultivation in Israel, the U.S., and many tomato-growing regions throughout the world. To overcome these limitations, we proposed a two-step strategy that combines transgenic and conventional resistance in order to develop tomato plants that are resistant to multiple begomoviruses. In the first step, we have developed transgenic tomato plants expressing trans-dominant interfering mutants Rep and C3 from TYLCV and ToMoV, and tested whether these plants are resistant to infection by these two viruses. In the second step we have tested whether pyramiding transgenic and conventional resistance is superior to either strategy alone. The specific objectives of the proposal were: 1. Design and test trans-dominant interfering constructs for TYLCV and ToMoV Rep and C3 in transient replication interference assays. 2. Generate and test transgenic tomato plants expressing mutant Rep and C3 in resistance assays. 3. Generate and test conventional resistant lines that also express mutant Rep and C3. Two viral replication interfering constructs, expressing the trans-dominant interfering mutants Rep and C3, were designed and constructed during this project. One construct, pNSB1630 was based on TYLCV sequences and the other, pNSB1682, based on ToMoV sequences. The TYLCV transformation construct was tested in a protoplasts replication assay, and was found to inhibit TYLCV replication. The ToMoV transformation construct is yet to be tested in a protoplast assay. Both transformation vectors, pNSB1630 and pNSB1682, were used to transform four different tomato lines, and generate transgenic plants. The tomato lines used for transformation were: FL7613, MM, TY172, TY199. FL7613 and MM are susceptible to both TYLCV and ToMoV. TY172 and TY199 are breeding lines developed at Volcani Center. TY172 is resistant to TYLCV but susceptible to ToMoV, while TY199 is resistant to both TYLCV and ToMoV. When transgenic T1 plants expressing the pNSB1630 constructed were screened for TYLCV resistance, it was found that these plants showed very low level of TYLCV resistance, if any. However, some of these lines showed high level of resistance to ToMoV. Only five transgenic T1 lines expressing the pNSB1682 construct were tested (so far) for resistance to ToMoV. It was found that all five lines express very high level of resistance to ToMoV. Although we haven’t finished (yet) the screen of all the transgenic lines, it is already clear that we were able to successfully combine genetic resistance for TYLCV with transgenic resistance to ToMoV.
