This paper analyzes the southeastern Connecticut Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation’s battle with cultural erasure and resistance through education. Indigenous education programs are gradual yet the most effective method of resisting Western cultural erasure from the United States government, because they peacefully invite both Natives and non-Natives to learn about Native American history outside of European colonizer textbooks. The Tribe battles the erasure that can result from external parties’ ability to grant state or federal titles recognizing tribal authority (known as recognition titles) to determine who receives the powerful stamp of Indigeneity and the right to self- govern. My case study focuses on the Eastern Pequots Archaeology Field School project in collaboration with University of Massachusetts, Boston. I evaluate how the Eastern Pequots use a collaborative archaeology education program with their Tribal members and non-Native individuals to resist erasure by decolonizing Western pedagogy. The Field School has gathered over 99,000 artifacts over 15 seasons that dismantle common misconceptions of how Native Americans lived during the beginning of the United States’ history and redefine modern beliefs about how Natives survived European colonization. The Field School contributes to expanding brief descriptions of Native history into a more complicated and dynamic story that elaborates on Native struggle, survival and resistance.

Abstract Ongoing efforts to support Age Friendly University (AFU) principles must be campus-wide and include commitment from upper administration, faculty, staff, and students. This presentation will describe the leveraging of a new community-based collective partnership to develop a student internship model at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) that could be used across campus to create a deeper investment in the AFU initiative. We will discuss the valuable collaboration with the Connecticut Healthy Living Collective, an emerging hub of state, regional and local agencies and organizations dedicated to healthy aging in communities throughout our state. The presenters will describe the process of establishing the Matter of Balance internship in psychological science with the support of our dean, knowing that it would eventually serve the broader AFU mission. We will highlight the value this intentional effort offers at multiple levels and how it might be replicated on other AFU campuses.

Donald J. Pinkava is best known for his application of cytogenetics in unraveling the complex interspecific hybridization in the prickly pear genus Opuntia Mill. in the southwestern United States extending down into northern and central Mexico. Using cytogenetics, Pinkava delimited species boundaries within Opuntia for taxonomic treatments. His work on Opuntia in the Chihuahuan Desert led to later comprehensive contributions in the Flora of North America and the Flora of Arizona that include opuntias not only in the Southwest but in every US state. Pinkava's systematic knowledge, as reflected in his taxonomic treatments provided the basic scientific framework needed for ongoing conservation of Cactaceae in the Southwest to the present day. Interestingly, the starting point for all of Pinkava's contributions in Cactaceae began with his initial studies of Asteraceae as a student of T. Richard Fisher at The Ohio State University (OSU), an institution with longstanding research interests in the Asteraceae. It is there that he selected a genus, Berlandiera DC as his dissertation topic. Ironically, this genus has a range from the drier sites of the Eastern Coastal Plains, into the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains, with a disjunct distribution in the mountain floras of southeastern Arizona and Northern Mexico. Like Berlandiera, Pinkava’s own work reflects techniques and training in the eastern US, that migrated and was used as the basis for his groundbreaking studies of Cactaceae in the Southwest.

A team of students from the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, Yale University School of Medicine, has been investigating an increase in reported infections with Neisseria gonorrhea statewide in children 13 years of age or less, excluding neonates, in Connecticut. In particular, there was a marked increase in reported infections in one city between 1983 and 1984. The results suggest that much of a statewide increase during that time may have been due to improved recognition, predominantly due to the use of pharyngeal cultures in this city, and raise disturbing questions about the adequacy of recognition, culturing, and reporting from other parts of the state.

I HAVE READ SEVERAL OF YOUR LETTERS DECLARING THAT they are “The Best NICU in America” and I had to write because I truly believe that I work in “The Best NICU in America.” I have been involved in neonatal nursing in some aspect or another since I graduated from Ohio State University in 1977. I worked at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s NICU as a new graduate, and at Ohio State University’s NICU. Both were wonderful experiences and helped me to get started on the right track when it came to my neonatal nursing career. In 1983 I moved to Connecticut and started to work at Danbury Hospital in their NICU. I am currently an NNP but have held management and staff positions there. I feel privileged to have been in several positions in this NICU because it has given me the chance to experience nursing from all aspects.

An exploration and analysis of the processes involved in crafting the institution’s strategic plan, identifying its quality assurance policies, documenting its graduates’ performance in government licensure examinations, description of the processes to ensure sustainability of educational programs, and portray the administration’s fund generation and management mechanisms was made in an effort to create a model for quality education in the University of Eastern Philippines, University Town, Northern Samar. It utilized the descriptive-evaluative method of research with a total of 400 respondents composed of students, faculty members, alumni, community residents, and University officials. Qualitative data were taken from respondents’ answers to open-ended questions, which were then validated through interviews. Quantitative data on the other hand, were taken from both primary data derived from responses to items in the questionnaire, and secondary data on graduates’ performance in professional examinations. It was revealed that most stakeholders were aware of the institution’s strategic plan, although some were not consulted in the crafting of such an important document. They aver that policies and guidelines are established, implemented, and strictly adhered to by the administration in its daily operations involving faculty, students, staff, fund generation and management, instruction, research, extension, production, faculty development, and student support services. Although graduates performed consistently well in some government examinations, in the years 2009 – 2014 they performed generally below the national average. Respondents agree that curricular programs must regularly be updated to conform to minimum standards set by the Commission on Higher Education to ensure sustainability of programs. For students to be globally relevant and competent, respondents agree to the provision of educationally qualified and competent teaching force, state-of-the-art facilities, modern instructional materials and methods, coupled with good governance and cooperation among stakeholders, are the key ingredients of an ideal quality of education in the University of Eastern Philippines.

Abstract The Age Friendly University (AFU) initiative provides a vision to inspire institutions of higher education to respond to the interests and needs of an aging population to promote well-being and quality of life. At Central Connecticut State University (CCSU), we have utilized multiple strategies to engage collaborators within our university and our community to further age-inclusive efforts. The purpose of this presentation is to describe the ongoing collaboration, through the Matter of Balance program, with the Connecticut Healthy Living Collective, an emerging hub of state, regional and local agencies and organizations dedicated to healthy aging in communities throughout our state. The Matter of Balance program is an empirically supported community-based treatment to reduce fear of falling among older adults. We will first discuss the pilot internship program offered within the Department of Psychological Science that trained students as program facilitators which was cut short in Spring 2020 due to COVID 19. We will then describe “Version 2.0” of the collaboration which was offered in the Spring 2022 semester. This time, it was grounded in a gerontology internship course that expanded to include research, faculty, and student collaboration with the Department of Physical Education and Human Performance. In addition to providing these overall descriptions, the presenters will review the strengths and challenges of each approach, share results about the students’ experiences, and highlight the multidimensional value this intentional effort offers.

ABSTRACT Purpose—The purpose of this paper is to analyze the classical decision making model as applied to restructuring a Department on Aging services for the State of Connecticut. Mandated by the Connecticut legislature in 2007 to reestablish the department, the Department of Social Services (DSS) commissioned Southern Connecticut State University to recommend a structure for the newly legislated department, which had been disbanded by then-Governor Lowell Weicker in 1993. Design/Methodology/Approach—Qualitative interviews of relevant stakeholders at all levels revealed that while few were satisfied by the current structure of the Department on Aging, there was no consensus concerning the design of a more effective replacement, only deeply held differences. Through the collection and analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data, the decision process on how to best structure aging services becomes hostage to a contingency where this decision model breaks down. The search stage develops a set of alternatives with no clear criteria for rational selection—all choices feature competing sets of strengths and weaknesses, successfully applied by various state agencies. Findings—Decision makers from various stakeholders did agree on two general criteria: that the new department must be feasible (defined mainly in terms of affordability), and that the new department must be strong (defined mainly in terms of control over resources). In the presence of competing values concerning the optimization of effective services, clarification of feasibility and strength through accounting analysis restored a rational basis for agreement and selection of a satisfactory choice, rationalizing an otherwise paralyzed and political decision process. Originality/Value—The process used to design the Connecticut Department on Aging offers a paradigm for other states to consider in developing a structure for elderly services. Elder affairs are clearly an area where passion and complexity are heightened. As a result, accounting analysis, tempered to ensure that profits and numbers do not overshadow the socially responsible purpose of the public organization, presented the most rational approach to develop a structure. The process shows that by managing risk and substituting satisfactory for optimal goals, accounting data emerged as a tie-breaker in the presence of strong competing values. Accounting analysis restores a rational basis for agreement by abandoning the realm of idealistic optimal states and linking alternatives to hard budgetary figures. Accounting analysis grounded estimations of risks in terms of real costs, and presented alternatives in terms of incremental budgetary shifts, which are easier to understand and debate than the philosophical nature of what constitutes the ultimate “senior friendly” community. The proposed plan was actually accepted by then-Governor of the State of Connecticut, M. Jodi Rell, who declared a restoration of a Department on Aging, based upon the final recommendations of this study, effective July 1, 2009. However, for budgetary reasons, Bill SB 841 postponed the reestablishment of a state Department on Aging, but did transfer additional programs on July 1, 2010, which included the state-funded portion of the Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders (CHCPE). Since the budgetary problems of the state intensified, the administration of complex elderly programs which involve Medicare and Medicaid continue to be administrated by DSS indefinitely.

The Department of Geography, which trains specialists in geography at the Far Eastern State University, has passed a difficult path of its formation and development. The first geographical courses were developed at the beginning of the 20th century at the Oriental Institute at the Department of Ethnography and Geography, and at the Department of Politics, Legislation and Economic Order. In the 1920s, the disciplines of the geographical cycle at the Far Eastern State University were included in the curricula of the agricultural, technical and oriental faculties. Professor A.A. Polovinkin is the author of the widely known in the country textbooks on physical geography for secondary schools. From the first days of the creation of the Department of Physical Geography by Professor V.I. Lymarev in 1964, the teaching staff, along with the educational process, joined the complex geographical studies of the nature and features of the socio-economic development of the Far East regions. Expeditionary works were carried out in Chukotka, Kamchatka, on Sakhalin, Kuril and Shantar islands, in Primorye. The laboratory and analytical base was formed, the first results of geological and geomorphological interpretation of aerial photographs for the compilation of morphodynamic maps appeared. The works on landscape mapping of the areas of the active volcanism appeared. New author’s courses on physical and economic geography of the Far East and adjacent regions were developed. The considerable attention of the department was paid to the development of students’ research works. Their participation in annual expeditions to the remote and hard-to-reach areas, conducted under the guidance of teachers and staff, long-term educational and industrial practices, various types of lectures, seminars and extracurricular activities contributed to the formation of the professional qualities of graduated geographers. The connection of the educational process with the scientific research carried out by the department in the background of wide cooperation with academic institutions was the main peculiarity of students’ training.

Bulk metallic glasses synthesized at specialized facilities at Yale using magnetron cosputtering are sent to Southern Connecticut State University for elemental characterization. Characterization is done using a Zeiss Sigma VP SEM coupled with an Oxford EDS. Characterization is automated using control software provided by Oxford. Collected data is processed and visualized using computational methods developed internally. Processed data is then organized into a database suitable for web retrieval. This technique allows for the rapid characterization of a combinatorial wafer to be carried out in ~11 hours for a single wafer containing ~600 unique compounds.

Two binder technician workshops were held in January 1998, one at the Connecticut Advanced Pavement Laboratory at the University of Connecticut and one at the Northeast Center of Excellence for Paving Technology at Pennsylvania State University. These workshops were followed by a second set in 1999. The overall objective was to improve the repeatability of the test methods used to grade Superpave® asphalt binders. During the workshops, participants demonstrated and discussed the techniques used in their own laboratories. A document, Manual of Practice for Testing Asphalt Binders in Accordance with the Superpave PG Grading System, was developed for use by asphalt binder technicians and as a training aid for a proposed binder technician certification program. The results of the discussions that were held during the workshops and the items that are presented in the manual of practice are summarized. The results were grouped into four main categories: ( a) handling, sampling, and sample preparation; ( b) temperature measurements; ( c) equipment calibration; and ( d) testing procedures. The items discussed here and in the manual of practice supplement and clarify the current AASHTO test methods. The test methods in themselves are not sufficient to ensure uniformity in testing practice from one laboratory to the other.

The Eastern Cape Planning Commission identifies human development as the central concern that the Provincial Development Plan should be premised on (Eastern Cape Planning Commission, 2012). This article proposes to critically examine the emerging (albeit implicit) philosophicalfoundation for sustainable human development, which we read as a combination of consciousness, capability, and rational organisation, and discusses these three interrelating aspects against selected stakeholders of sustainable human development: the State, civic society and the university. We determine that a re-imagination of the Eastern Cape Province would require serious consideration for the reshaping of the State, a rethinking of the roles and relationships with, and between, civic society, and a review of the third mission of the university.

Abstract The eastern margin of North America has been affected by a range of fundamental tectonic processes in the geologic past. Major events include the Paleozoic Appalachian orogeny, which culminated in the formation of the supercontinent Pangea, and the breakup of Pangea during the Mesozoic. The southern New England Appalachians exhibit a particularly rich set of geologic and tectonic structures that reflect multiple episodes of subduction and terrane accretion, as well as subsequent continental breakup. It remains poorly known, however, to what extent structures at depth in the crust and lithospheric mantle reflect these processes, and how they relate to the geological architecture at the surface. The Seismic Experiment for Imaging Structure beneath Connecticut (SEISConn) was a deployment of 15 broadband seismometers in a dense linear array across northern Connecticut. The array traversed a number of major tectonic boundaries, sampling across the Laurentian margin in its western portion to the Avalonian terrane at its eastern end. It also crossed the Hartford rift basin in the central portion of the state. The SEISConn stations operated between 2015 and 2019; data from the experiment are archived at the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology Data Management Center and will be publicly available beginning in 2021. A suite of imaging techniques is being applied to SEISConn data, with the goal of providing a detailed view of the crust and mantle lithosphere (including discontinuities, seismic velocities, and seismic anisotropy) beneath the southern New England Appalachians. Results from these analyses will inform a host of fundamental scientific questions about the structural evolution of orogens, the processes involved in continental rifting, and the nature of crustal and mantle lithospheric deformation during subduction, terrane accretion, and continental breakup.

The research urgency is caused by necessity of studying the students somatic health level due to a sharp deterioration of health state during the last decade. The aim of the investigation is studying the dynamics and nosological forms of students diseases of higher educational institutions. The results of the work. It is established that the incidence of students in the dynamics of 2010–2016 is growing rapidly. The diseases of cardiovascular system, stomach and digestive organs, musculoskeletal system are the most common. In the analysis of nosologic forms of diseases for a gender characteristics, the percentage of women with pathology, from the first to the fourth year study within the specified research period is significantly more than men. Conclusions. The state of students health is unsatisfactory. This requires the search for new approaches for setting issue of youth health.
