Discrepancies in math knowledge emerge as early as four years of age, demonstrating need for effective early math interventions. Early math curricula and targeted instructional strategies have been shown to increase geometric knowledge in early childhood, particularly as that relates to shape learning. Existing educational research has not examined the specific role hand gesture embedded in instruction may have on early geometric learning, although in the psychological literature, effects of gesture on mathematical and spatial learning are well-documented. One hundred and twenty-one preschoolers and kindergarteners, divided among three instructional conditions—no observed gesture, seeing gesture, and seeing and doing gesture during instruction—participated in this study. Child knowledge of shape was measured on a shape sorting task before and after an instructional lesson. The researcher also collected data on spoken and gestured strategies used during the sorting task. Experimental condition influenced participant sorting performance when participants were exposed to gesture and encouraged to gesture themselves. Participant performance for this condition significantly differed from that of participants who were not exposed to gesture during instruction. Experimental condition did not significantly increase frequency of spoken or gestured strategies more indicative of shape knowledge. Child engagement in gesture during learning, regardless of condition, and socioeconomic status significantly impacted performance, aligning with existing findings in psychological and educational literature. The researcher proposed future directions for early intervention work in targeting shape knowledge.

This study explores how higher education choices are shaped for students from different social backgrounds in a Croatian higher education setting and how these students experience their first year of study and progress through it. The research design includes questionnaire data with responses from 642 first year undergraduate students at six case study faculties within the University of Zagreb; interview data collected from 28 students at the same six faculties whose first year educational experience and progress were more closely examined; and statistical data including information for all Croatian students. The study has engaged with Bourdieu’s different types of capital, habitus and field in order to propose a relatively holistic approach to understanding social differences in higher education participation. The study has identified an interrelated web of influence as shaping student choices and experiences: inherited or acquired capitals (cultural, social, economic and emotional), gender, and fields of the past (secondary education field), present (HE field) and future (labour market). The analysis indicates that institutional practices educationally reinforce social (dis)advantage through their (mis)recognition of resources which are unevenly distributed among students, thus positioning those with inherited capitals at an educational advantage. In this study, ‘inheritors; were identified as second generation students, who had attended a secondary grammar school, with the necessary financial resources, supportive parents and appropriate living and studying conditions. In the case of students with low initial capitals, examples of transformative educational practices were related primarily to the fields they interacted with, which acted as sources of capital influencing their practices. However, it was more often the case that fields reinforced existing capitals rather than provided new ones.

This thesis seeks to understand how parents make sense of high school choice, and how in understanding this, insights can be gained into mechanisms of advantage and disadvantage that operate in Australian schooling. It does so by analysing the underlying bases of parents’ aims from high school and how they seek to realise this in high school selection. It examines how different parental assets, including previous experiences in school and the workforce, enable parents to attain their desired school selections. In doing so this thesis goes beyond previous studies examining parental school choice to reveal how relations between families, schools and academic achievement influence the entire school field. This study draws upon two theoretical frameworks: Bourdieu’s field theory and Legitimation Code Theory. These are used to describe and analyse 28 parent interviews from a single geographic case study area in Sydney, comparing the outcomes parents sought from high school with how school choice was envisaged by policy makers. Four groups of parents are identified: credentialists, socially-disposed parents, all-rounders and consolidators. The approach of each parent group to school choice and the basis of the outcomes from schooling they seek provides insight into how school choice creates advantages and disadvantages in schooling. This thesis makes a number of contributions. Through enacting a relational framework it creates a model for surfacing previously hidden features of the school field including revealing why some parents readily traverse the school field, while others struggle to be seen. It creates a descriptive framework for analysis that gets beyond empirical description. It reveals a field so geared to academic performance that students who will not easily boost a schools’ ratings are easily left behind. Finally, it offers suggestions for imagining new possibilities for the field.

The purpose of this study was to determine if students in identified Illinois high schools who were a part of a one-to-one (1:1) laptop program achieved higher results on the computer-based Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessment than students in identified Illinois high schools that did not participate in a laptop program. In addition, gaps between males, females, large high schools, and small high schools were analyzed to discern if laptop programs possibly helped close achievement disparities. This study used a quantitative, non-experimental design that focused on a causal-comparative analysis of archival data from the 2014-15 school year. Participants were students in identified Illinois high schools who were administered the English/language arts and math components of the computer-based PARRC assessment. Results showed no statistical significance in English/language arts achievement scores between students who participated in a 1:1 laptop program and those that did not participate in a 1:1 laptop program. As for the math portion of the PARCC, there was a statistical significance as students that did not participate in 1:1 laptop programs scored higher than students that participated in 1:1 laptop programs in all areas except for students in small high schools. Students in small high schools that participated in 1:1 laptop programs scored significantly higher than their counterparts that did not participate in 1:1 laptop programs. The findings from this study indicated that 1:1 laptop programs may not increase student achievement on computer-based assessments.

The object of this thesis is to analyse how a co-operational network can come about, operate and progress to contribute to industrial dynamics within the locality. The thesis is a case-study of the HomeCom Project, to learn whether this project has the required features to contribute to the clustering process and thus higher levels of industrial dynamics and competitive advantage of the home communications industry in Linköping. The theoretical platform is based on Porter’s Diamond-model, which explains the occurrence of clusters. Theories of external economies complement Porter’s theories, while oligopoly theory will be introduced to offer a different perspective. The empirical findings show that the HomeCom Project may be considered to contribute to the clustering and in consequence promote industrial dynamics and competitive advantage. But there are also difficulties and attitudes that may impede the reaching of the project’s goals.

Organisations increasingly operate in an environment of continuous change and turbulence which places new demands on the choice of business and supportive strategies relevant not only to the sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) of the particular organisation, but also countries and the global nature in which they operate. A business-level strategy is to a large extent vested in intangible resources, specifically human resources strategy and capital, including the capabilities embodied in a productive and skilled workforce. In Africa, and South Africa in particular, there is a shortage of a workforce of such a nature. This is amongst others the result of past inequalities but also of shortcomings in current training practices in both the private and public sectors. One way to improve workforce output is though appropriate training aimed at increasing job-specific knowledge and the concomitant skills and productive behaviour. Changes and turbulence in the environment, therefore also create different challenges to training strategies and practices, with a shift from all-at-once to ongoing training with verifiable learning. In this regard instructional design (ID) models are deemed intrinsic to training strategy. In this dissertation an ID model within a particular contextualised situation is offered that broadens, deepens and extends existing ID models by positioning it within business-level strategy and by utilising a multidisciplinary approach pertinent to the new demands on training. To serve as a test-bed for the ID model it is implemented in a case organisation. The aim of the research is to evaluate the impact, based upon action standards, of the ID model on job-specific knowledge and productive behaviour and to provide an explanation of the internal construct relationships of the ID model. The purpose of the research is exploratory and interpretive, culminating in the single-case study tactic, wherein both quantitative and qualitative methods are applied. The case organisation is considered to be representative of a certain type of organisation with comparable characteristics. Where the existing literature supports the results (as in this instance), inductive generalisation facilitates the transferability and exportability of the ID model to other organisations. Results reveal a positive reaction to the ID model and a measurable increase in job-specific knowledge and concomitant productive behaviour. It is considered to be preferable over more traditional training practices. The relationships between the internal constructs of the ID model and improved job-specific knowledge and productive behaviour are seen to be facilitated by the combination and interplay of the components of the ID model. The contribution of this research is in providing and evaluating an ID model aimed at addressing the previous shortcomings in training and ID models and the application thereof in practice. Thus, the significance of the study lies in its extension of existing literature on ID models and specifically their contribution to sustainable competitive advantage, i.e. an academic theoretical contribution that extends the current body of knowledge. Particularly in its South African and African context, given the background of shortages in skills and productive behaviour and the need for fast-tracking the development of a competent workforce, the study is significant in that it provides guidelines for the practical development and implementation of a new ID model. The study makes recommendations to enhance both the formulation of the theoretical ID model as well as its practical implementation. It furthermore recommends extended research to explore the possibility of exporting the ID model to a broader range of private sector organisations as well as its possible transferability to public sector organisations.

Trends towards inclusion have been accompanied by a steady increase in the number of pupils identified with special educational needs (SEN) in mainstream schools. At the same time there has been a growing interest in the idea of thinking skills. One of the earliest programmes for developing thinking skills was Instrumental Enrichment (Feuerstein, 1980) to help children with learning difficulties. Despite an initial focus on pupils with SEN, thinking skills programmes now focus mainly on the general benefits. This study aimed to explore the benefits of teaching thinking to pupils identified with SEN with the programme Cognitive Enrichment Advantage (Greenberg, 2000), a programme that can be introduced into mainstream classes. The research was in three parts. In Part One, semi-structured interviews and a reading task indicated the types of difficulties nine twelve-year-old pupils experienced in lessons. Results suggested that learning difficulties and lack of confidence were preventing these pupils engaging in the learning process constructively. In Part Two, the same pupils were withdrawn from lessons and observed taking part in a ten-week programme of Cognitive Enrichment Advantage (CEA). Strategies to learn effectively, such as using a more systematic and planned approach to work, were observed to increase. The pupils reported improved feelings of confidence and exhibited greater autonomy and motivation. In Part Three, CEA was introduced into a physical, health and social education (PHSE) module for pupils of fourteen-years-old. Lesson observations and evaluations from pupils and teachers indicated that pupils identified with SEN had become more aware of how they learned and were planning their work more systematically. The pupils reported feeling more confident in examinations. The teachers were observed to manage group work in ways that encouraged greater participation of pupils identified with SEN and teachers reported use of mediation skills that were also likely to benefit these pupils. I concluded that the study demonstrated that introducing CEA into mainstream classrooms could be beneficial for pupils with learning difficulties, but to meet multifaceted pedagogic needs, other approaches that infused thinking skills across the curriculum should also be considered.

Digital technology is an increasingly integral component of teaching and learning within schools and, with Australia’s National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) moving to an online assessment, students now require a level of ICT capability to undertake this national measure of achievement. Substantial research exists around the presence of a digital divide, indicating that students from lower socioeconomic status households typically have less access to digital hardware and schools with low socio-educational advantage (SEA) are less likely to offer the same opportunities to engage with digital hardware as high SEA schools. This research examined classroom teacher perspectives on their students’ digital access and ICT capability and its impact on their ability to undertake online assessments. The research used a convergent mixed methods design to collect qualitative and quantitative data. The participants consisted of 107 self-selecting Australian teachers who completed an online survey. The participants worked in different school sectors representing a range of low to high socio-educational advantage schools. The findings of this research indicated that teachers identified inequity in digital access in students’ school and home learning environments. Students with access to their own devices, compared to students who share a device, were perceived by teachers to have significantly higher levels of ICT capabilities in both learning environments. Students accessed their own devices more prevalently in non-government schools, higher socio-educational advantaged schools, than in government schools and lower socio-educational advantaged schools, where students were more likely to share devices. The implications are important as the results identify that teachers perceive inequity in the level of digital ability students possess when undertaking online assessments like NAPLAN. The participants highlighted that the type of support schools provide to teachers and students to develop ICT capability influences the development of students’ digital abilities, with significant differences highlighted between school sectors. It is, therefore, critical for school stakeholders and state and federal governments to acknowledge how access to devices influences the ‘success’ of a student participating in online assessments. In order to support students’ development of ICT skills, teachers in government and lower SEA schools require specific and ongoing support to progress their ICT capabilities. Addressing the inequity in digital access and ICT capability is imperative to ensure that the introduction of online national assessments does not further disadvantage students from low SEA learning environments.

Researchers have connected student achievement to teacher collaboration; however, there is a paucity of studies conducted on how teachers use identified advantages and disadvantages of cross grade level collaboration to improve collegial interactions to achieve better student performance, professional development, teacher effectiveness, and job satisfaction. The purpose of this case study was to investigate how rural southeast Georgia elementary school teachers use identified advantages and disadvantages of cross grade level collaboration to improve collegial interactions. The theory of collegial coaching provided the conceptual framework for this study. The research questions focused on improving teacher effectiveness and student learning via collaborative dialogue. Data were collected via interviews, observations, and archival records from 14 teachers and administrators (maximum variation used) and analyzed for overarching emergent and dominant themes, patterns, issues, topics, ideas, relationships, cases, cross-cases, and concepts. Hatch's typological analysis was employed to decipher the data. Ethnograph v6.0 and QDA Miner 4.0 were used to code the data for triangulation. Quality control and validation were achieved through triangulation and member-checking. The findings illustrated the merits of ongoing collaboration and effective collegial interaction for teaching and learning. They also highlighted the potential of meaningful discussion in achieving effective collegial interaction. This study can lead to positive social change by providing teachers, administrators, and collaboration facilitators 2 models that can be used as guides for planning quality collegial interaction opportunities and in justifying time to collaborate across grades.

Recently in education, a new trend called flexible seating has emerged. Classrooms with flexible seating are redesigned to have a “Starbucks” atmosphere where students choose from a variety of alternative seating options and workspaces rather than sit at traditional desks. This study looks at the advantages and disadvantages of having flexible seating in an elementary classroom and determines what implications there are for teachers considering this type of arrangement. It also provides insight into how those involved in the classroom are experiencing flexible seating. Using teacher interviews, classroom observations, and student surveys, this mixed methods case study describes two 5th grade teachers and their classrooms’ flexible seating experiences. Based on the results of the study, the researcher advises teachers to let the nature of the task determine the classroom seating arrangement. In addition, she suggests providing alternative seating devices for students regardless of the arrangement chosen as they allow for more movement throughout the day. And lastly, the researcher encourages teachers to consider their own teaching style and preferences when choosing an arrangement because they will be most effective when the classroom is arranged in a way that is pleasing and comfortable to them as well.

Adopting a triangulated approach, this thesis consists of three separate but related qualitative studies, the collective objectives of which are to (i) gauge current levels of concern of Australian public universities with rapid intensification of the higher education sector globally; (ii) evaluate strategies developed by universities in response to increasing competition; and (iii) develop a conceptual framework to guide competitive behaviour of universities. Study 1 is a systematic content analysis of published strategic plans of universities using Leximancer (Version 2.20). Relative prominence of concepts identified in this content analysis give rise to propositions relating both to levels of concern with competition and strategies being implemented to protect market position. In Study 2, these propositions are tested in a sample of the universities by means of case studies based on face-to-face interviews with senior academics and administrators. Study 3 draws upon findings of Studies 1 and 2 to develop a strategic model to guide future strategy development. Overall, findings of the studies provide valuable insights into the management of higher education in a dynamic environment in which the intensity of competition is likely to escalate as the pace of globalisation and technological change quickens, as deregulation of the domestic higher education sector continues, as per capita funding is further reduced, as even greater elements of competition and contestability are introduced in the interests of productivity and efficiency, and as overseas student demand slackens in traditional markets.

This study examined perceptions of hospital-based nursing schools among nursing professionals to determine whether this type of nursing education model is viable in the modern nursing context. Nursing education is faced with the twin problems of insufficient nurses, which creates a demand for rapid education of nurses, and ensuring adequate clinical quality of nurses, which creates a demand for more extensive undergraduate clinical training. Hospital-based nursing schools are three-year programs that provide more intensive clinical training than the two-year university-based programs. The study developed and disseminated a questionnaire to assess the perception of nursing professionals and nursing students on the issues related to hospital-based nursing schools including clinical quality and the shortage of nurses. Secondary research was conducted based on the available literature regarding nursing education and the historical development of the current nursing educational system. The study found that there was a generally favorable opinion of hospital-based nursing schools among the surveyed population, particularly in the area of the level of clinical training received at these types of schools. The study also found that there were significant attitudinal and financial barriers to increasing the number of hospital based nursing schools. The findings of this study are exploratory in nature and serve to define the problems and alternatives associated with nursing education and hospital-based nursing schools.

Researchers have connected student achievement to teacher collaboration; however, there is a paucity of studies conducted on how teachers use identified advantages and disadvantages of cross grade level collaboration to improve collegial interactions to achieve better student performance, professional development, teacher effectiveness, and job satisfaction. The purpose of this case study was to investigate how rural southeast Georgia elementary school teachers use identified advantages and disadvantages of cross grade level collaboration to improve collegial interactions. The theory of collegial coaching provided the conceptual framework for this study. The research questions focused on improving teacher effectiveness and student learning via collaborative dialogue. Data were collected via interviews, observations, and archival records from 14 teachers and administrators (maximum variation used) and analyzed for overarching emergent and dominant themes, patterns, issues, topics, ideas, relationships, cases, cross-cases, and concepts. Hatch’s typological analysis was employed to decipher the data. Ethnograph v6.0 and QDA Miner 4.0 were used to code the data for triangulation. Quality control and validation were achieved through triangulation and member-checking. The findings illustrated the merits of ongoing collaboration and effective collegial interaction for teaching and learning. They also highlighted the potential of meaningful discussion in achieving effective collegial interaction. This study can lead to positive social change by providing teachers, administrators, and collaboration facilitators 2 models that can be used as guides for planning quality collegial interaction opportunities and in justifying time to collaborate across grades.

Small business owners play a leading role in the United States economy by creating jobs. However, small businesses have a high failure rate, with approximately 50% going out of business during the first 5 years. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the competitive advantage strategies that owners of small businesses used to sustain their businesses longer than the first 5 years. A sample of 6 small service industry business owners in Houston, TX that have been in business for 5 years or more participated in semistructured interviews. Additional data were collected from company documents and the review of artifacts related to small business success and longevity. Entrepreneurship theory provided the conceptual framework for the study. Member checking enhanced the credibility of the interpretations of the participant responses. Data were analyzed using Yin's 5 stages of coding: compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and concluding the data. From the data analysis, 3 themes were revealed: financial capital, marketing and competitive advantages, and great customer service. Findings of this study might help owners of small businesses to ensure business growth, increase revenues, and stimulate job creation.

The study looked at the trends toward the privatization or contract management of auxiliary services such as college bookstores at four year public universities to determine the degree that self-operated or leased bookstores support the campus based on the level of service quality being provided to students, financial support to the institution, academic support to the campus and other factors. The use of the SERVQUAL (1991) instrument was effective in evaluating levels of consumer satisfaction in the bookstore industry. Student satisfaction with newly leased bookstores was significantly higher than with institutional bookstores. The change from one delivery method to another appeared to be the cause of the higher levels of satisfaction and not the lease operator. Staffing levels are lower with lease bookstores. There was no data, however, to support a decrease in service as a result of the staff reduction. Auxiliary service directors strongly believe that their institutional operations could be as competitive as the leased bookstore. Yet, leasing is occurring at a dramatic rate which suggests that there is a need to set clear goals and objectives and communicate the role of auxiliary services. Prices and product selection increased as a result of the bookstore being leased. This study shows that the retail prices in the bookstore increased significantly when the campus store leased its operation. Review of the data suggests that higher retail prices correlate to higher percentages of gross revenue given to the institution by the lease operator. Leased bookstores financially contribute more to the institution than self-operated bookstores. This study, however, found no evidence to support the belief that leasing is more beneficial than self-operation because the philosophy of senior level administration does not expect the institutional bookstore to generate a profit but rather "just break even." Academic involvement is low among all college bookstores. There was a loss of management control and less monitoring as a result of leasing. Complaints of unfair competition were reported to have occurred 15 percent more frequently at the institutional bookstore than the lease bookstore.

The current study investigated whether hypocrisy-induction – a burgeoning method of cognitive dissonance therapy – acts to increase physical exercise habits and reduce stress, as well as how physical exercise mediates the relationship between hypocrisy-induction and perceived stress, and whether self-esteem moderates the relationship between hypocrisy-induction and physical exercise. Using questionnaires and manipulations, this study measured participants’ (both work and non-work) stress, self-esteem, physical exercise habits, and physical exercise intentions. Fifty-four undergraduate students enrolled in Psychology 111 at a small Midwest university were randomly assigned to a control or treatment condition and surveyed on several constructs before being put through manipulations, and were then surveyed online four weeks following the experiment. Results supported some hypotheses, revealing that: as individuals exercise more, they perceive less stress; individuals who had their hypocrisy induced perceived less stress than those who hadn’t; hypocrisy-induction did not affect physical exercise habits or intentions; and those with higher self-esteem are more affected by hypocrisy-induction than those with lower self-esteem. Ultimately, these results highlight the potential efficacy and versatility for hypocrisy-induction to generalize onto improving prosocial behavior.

Research reveals that the level as well as the quality of education plays a role in the determination of an individual's intellectual capacity. Substantial differences in quality of education for black and white individuals were experienced in South Africa due to Apartheid. Compared to the traditionally white Private and Model C schools, Township/ DET schools had limited resources, as well as a separate syllabus and examination system, a situation that has not improved substantially since democratisation in 1994. Research on black South African adults with the WAIS-III has confirmed significant influences on IQ in association with exposure to either such advantaged (Private/Model C) schooling, or disadvantaged (Township/DET) schooling. However to date there has been no published research on the use of the Wechsler intelligence tests on a black South African child population similarly stratified for quality of education. Therefore, for the purposes of this study, the latest Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-IV) was administered to a sample of 36 Grade 7 learners between the ages of 12-13 (mean 13.01 years), stratified for quality of education to form three comparative groups. Data analyses revealed significant differences on the WISC-IV Factor Indices and Full Scale IQ with the English speaking Private/Model C school group performing the best, followed by the Xhosa speaking Private/ Model C school group, and the Xhosa speaking Township/ DET school group performing the worst. This continuum of lowering is understood to occur abreast of a continuum of decreased exposure to relatively advantaged education. These normative indications are considered to have vital implications for the use of the WISC-IV in the South African cross-cultural situation where vastly differential educational opportunities continue to exist.

The purpose of this study was to examine factors that may have influenced the decision to implement tablet technologies within classroom environments. These factors were grouped and limited to three distinct areas: social and political influences, perceived benefits of implementation, and influence of varying types of hardware, software and operating systems. Results indicate that if technology leaders felt external pressures to keep pace with technological advancements of other corporations, they were more likely to report pressures from the other social political factors being studied. Multiple perceived educational benefits were identified including improvement to classroom instruction, increased differentiation of instruction, enhanced collaboration, better communication and positive public responses. Hardware preferences were found to describe the characteristics found in the Apple line of products. Despite the identification of these perceived educational benefits, a majority of those responding felt that tablet devices did not impact student testing achievement.

Student achievement gaps between Black and White students, and socioeconomically disadvantaged and advantaged students, have been observed and formally documented since the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) began in the 1970s. In particular, the mathematics achievement gap between these historically disadvantaged populations has been a phenomenon that, in spite of improvements, has nevertheless remained persistent for decades. This study sought to identify and derive additional information about the mathematics achievement gap between Black students and White students, and socioeconomically disadvantaged and advantaged students, by elementary and middle school level in a Virginia school district over three consecutive school years. Overall student performance on the Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL) assessment was examined and achievement gaps were reported. In addition to overall mathematics achievement, this study also sought to detect specific mathematic conceptual areas in which Black and White students, and socioeconomically disadvantaged and advantaged students, were significantly disparate. Factorial Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) and Factorial Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) were used to identify statistically significant differences between the subgroups in assessment scores reflecting overall mathematics achievement, and student achievement in five conceptual “content strands.” Interactions between student race, socioeconomic status, and school level were also examined. Effect sizes were calculated to indicate any practical significance corresponding to statistical significance noted. For overall mathematics performance, results indicated the continued presence of an achievement gap between Black and White students, and socioeconomically disadvantaged and advantaged students, for each year examined. Interaction was noted between race and socioeconomic status, and race and school level. For mathematics performance along the content strands, results indicated the presence of an achievement gap between Black and White students, and socioeconomically disadvantaged and advantaged students, in every conceptual area for each year analyzed. Interaction was indicated between race and socioeconomic status in all but one content strand during one school year. Consistent interaction was also observed between race and school level in two content strands. No significant effect size was indicated for overall or strand-based mathematics achievement differences, demonstrating limited practical significance. Implications for practice, limitations, and suggestions for future research are discussed.

The public concern for sustainability issues is ever increasing whilst the trust in corporations is decreasing. CEOs now see sustainability concern and compliance as an important component in retaining their competitive advantage and regaining the trust of their surrounding community. For these reasons it is important to find new manners of uniting societal improvement with business, requiring new forms of competencies. This study has investigated what sustainability education is actually central to the industrial engineering profile, as well as what of this is then covered in the programs. The study involved two phases. The first involved interviewing experts as to what was central for these engineers to learn, resulting in a content list. The second phase involved mapping the instances of this content in the five largest industrial engineering programs (covering circa 74% of these students) as well as the associated challenges to broaching this content. The first phase was primarily qualitative whilst the second phase was largely quantitative, though each data point consisted of a qualitative interview. Five key insights can be drawn from the study regardless of normative stand-point. 1) The sustainability topics that were deemed relevant cover a vast area of disciplines and aspects. 2) There is a skewedness in the content covered, favouring the environmental aspects. 3) There is a lack of integrative instances where the knowledge from different sources and perspectives is synthesized. 4) The key challenges revolve around concept definition and communication. 5) The normativity, interconnectedness and pedagogics contribute with uncertainty and complexity in the assessment of sustainability education. The study is finalized with a synthesis of the various insights to arrive at the conclusion that having sustainable business practice as the aim of the programs, establishing common content goals and employing active learning approach would circumvent many of the perceived challenges as well as align the programs with the need of the industry. This study contributes with deeper understanding of the sustainability education required and provided to industrial engineering students in Sweden. As such the study has practical applications for the programs studied. The theoretical implications of this study lie in the empirical data achieved regarding the topics of relevance to these engineers, showing high levels of agreement with current literature, as well as the perceived challenges to broaching this content in the current curricula. Furthermore it provides empirical data as to the sustainability education received at different programs.

Studien var indelad i två faser. Den första ämnade till att skapa en lista av de, för dessa ingenjörer, centrala ämnen genom intervjuer med experter inom området. Den andra fasen kartlagde de ämnen som berördes inom de fem största industriell ekonomiprogrammen (täckandes cirka 74% av studenterna) samt vilka utmaningar som associerades till detta arbete. Den första fasen var till stora delar kvalitativ. Den efterföljande fasen var en kvantitativ kartläggning där varje datapunkt representerade en kvalitativ intervju. Ur studien uppkom fem nyckelinsikter, som står sig oavsett normativ ståndpunkt. Dessa inkluderade: 1) De hållbarhetsämnen som ansågs relevanta för denna målgrupp spänner en vid area av discipliner och aspekter. 2) Fördelningen på ämnen som täcks inom programmen påvisar en preferens mot den miljömässiga aspekten. 3) Det finns en brist på integrerande instanser i utbildningarna, där kunskap från olika aspekter och källor sammankopplas. 4) Nyckelutmaningarna centreras runt definiering och kommunikation. 5) Normativitet, sammankoppling och pedagogik bidrar alla till osäkerhet och komplexitet i bedömning av hållbarhetsutbildningar. Studien avslutas med en syntes av de olika insikterna för att komma till slutsatsen att hållbart företagande som övergripande syfte för utbildningarna, en gemensam målbild för innehållet samt komplettering med ”active learning” metodiker skulle övervinna många av de uppfattade utmaningarna samtidigt som det skulle uppfylla näringslivets kompetensbehov för framtida konkurrenskraft. Denna studie bidrar till förståelsen över vilken hållbarhetsutbildning som bedrivs och vilken som anses behövd av industriell ekonomistudenter i Sverige. Studien har därmed praktiska implikationer för de program som studerades. Teoretiska bidrag inkluderas av den empiriska data som framtagits gällande relevanta hållbarhetsämnen vilka uppvisar hög konvergens med litteraturen inom ämnen, samt de upplevda utmaningar kring att inkludera detta ämne i befintliga program. Vidare bidrar studien med empirisk data kring det som faktiskt berörs idag på de olika industriell ekonomiprogrammen.

The principal focus of the present study was to examine the factors critical to the development and maintenance of a competitive advantage for education institutions operating in international markets. International education involves over 1.3 million students' world wide, and injects billions of dollars into the economies of supplier nations. Despite its importance, little empirical research is available on the international marketing of education. This study draws together research from services marketing, industrial and organisational economics, strategic management and various studies and reports relating to the management and marketing of international education.Commencing with an overview of the international market for education, the study examines the education sectors of leading supplier nations particularly Britain, Canada, New Zealand and the United States. It then describes the education sector of Australia and its international education industry in depth.Following a review of the relevant literature that relates to services marketing and e development of sustainable competitive advantage, a theoretical model as to how an education institution might achieve competitive advantage in international markets is proposed, along with several research propositions.' The findings of a survey of 315 education institutions in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and United States are then outlined. Initial descriptive statistics suggest that:1. Australian tertiary institutions are less confident about their international market recognition than are their Canadian, American, New Zealand or United Kingdom (CANZUK) counterparts;2. Significant differences exist between the five supplier countries in the importance they place on targeting certain markets;3. Australian tertiary institutions were somewhat more pessimistic about the growth in their international student body that were their CANZUK counterparts;4. Australian institutions were significantly more concerned over government support and policy than were their CANZUK counterparts;5. Student word of mouth referral was identified as the most effective form of promotion for international education;6. Australian tertiary institutions were significantly more positive about the value of recruitment agents and mass media advertising than were their CANZUK counterparts.An exploratory factor analysis of the survey data found a series underlying dimensions measuring various aspects of an institution's perception of its marketing and strategic planning processes. These "factors" were used to generate twenty-six derived variables that were used for subsequent analysis. An examination of these factors was undertaken, both statistically and through a series of in-depth interviews with fifteen education institutions in Australia.Two regressions were used to estimate the relationship between the dependent variables of Cost Leadership and Differentiation (which are measures of generic positioning strategies adopted by the institutions), and a range of independent variables measuring institutional perception of their external and internal environments. A structural equation model was also used to estimate the relationships between these two regressions. This found that the adoption of generic positioning strategies appears to be determined by institutional consideration of:1. Market Factors - a measure of institutional consideration of the importance of buyer bargaining power when developing business strategies;2. Market Outlook - a measure of institutional consideration of the importance of the level of market saturation within the industry when developing business strategies;3. Experience and Psychic Distance - a measure of institutional consideration of the importance of knowledge or experience of foreign markets, cultural differences and foreign recognition of programs when developing marketing strategies; and4. Resource Factors - a measure of institutional consideration of the importance of internal resources when developing business strategies.The selection of Cost Leadership appears to be determined by the first three of these variables, while selection of Differentiation appears to be determined by all four. These findings support the propositions that industry structure and foreign market structure are determinants of the generic enterprise strategies adopted by education institutions seeking competitive advantage in international markets.A discriminant analysis was undertaken to examine the relationship between adoption of a generic enterprise strategy and marketing strategies. This found an association between differentiation strategies and marketing strategies. Institutions which adopted differentiation strategies (e.g. uniqueness of programs and/or concentration on niche markets) were more like to be classified by high activity on two variables:1. Promotion and Recruitment - a measure of the perceived actual performance of the institution in its use of agents, expenditure on advertising and promotion, possession of offshore recruitment offices, use of government promotional agencies and size of international student enrolments.2. Marketing Activity - a measure of the importance to market success placed upon the use of agents, spending on advertising and promotion, possession of offshore recruitment offices and teaching programs, international alliances and enrolment of international students.A third regression estimated the relationship between the dependent variable Market Success (a measure of the enrolment growth, financial benefit, demand and optimism over future growth) and twenty-five independent variables derived from the factor analysis. This suggests that Market Success be determined by institutional consideration of Resource Factors, adoption of Differentiation positioning strategies and the possession of key "distinctive competencies " as:1. Image and Products - a measure of the perceived actual performance of the institution in terms of its reputation for quality, level of market profile, strength of financial resources, size and influence of its alumni and range of courses and programs;2. Coalition and Forward Integration - a measure of the actual performance of the institution in its possession of international strategic alliances and offshore teaching programs.Further, the institution's Market Success was also found negatively correlated with two additional variables:1. People and Culture - a measure of the perceived actual performance of the institution in its encouragement of innovation, customer orientation, effective use of information technology, the quality and expertise of its staff and its level of technical superiority;2. Mass Advertising - a measure of the institution's perception of the effectiveness of promotion via TV, radio, newspapers and magazines.These findings support the propositions that generic enterprise (at least those involving differentiation) and market entry strategies are significant determinants of market success. They also support the proposition that quality of image, market profile, coalition formation and forward integration into the export channel are likely to strengthen an institution's competitive advantage. Although not measured directly, these distinctive competencies may provide a source of sustainable competitive advantage as they provide potential barriers to imitation by competitors. Such barriers produce isolating mechanisms, which assist the institution to sustain a competitive edge in the market.Several managerial and research implications emerged from this study. The importance of developing a sound understanding of the student consumer were highlighted, along with the need to effectively measure and communicate an image of quality to the market. Saturation within international education markets is growing and future growth is likely to be dependent on market segmentation and the adoption of differentiation strategies. Those institutions with superior market experience will be better placed to make effective decisions regarding their competitive positioning. In doing so, the more successful are likely to give consideration to supply-demand imbalance and the general management of internal resources (e.g. staffing, facilities and programs).Successful institutions are likely to be those that adopt differentiation strategies that enhance their image and reputation as quality service providers build upon a sound financial base and make effective use of their Alumni and student word of mouth networks. Such institutions will also be likely to have offshore teaching programs and valuable strategic alliances that enhance their marketing and service delivery.

The study was conducted to investigate the possibility of raising the comprehension scores of twenty advantaged students through the use of attribution theory in moving the student's locus of control, concept work, and imaging. The subjects of the control and experimental groups were male and female tenth and eleventh grade summer school students whose comprehension scores were at the fiftieth percentile or below or students who would benefit from comprehension instruction. The Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests (1978), Level F, Forms 1 and 2 were used respectively for the pretest and posttest. A related sample t test and analysis of covariance was used to test the null hypothesis. A significant gain was evidenced from the pretest to the posttest and the null hypothesis was rejected. The implications of the study are that the application of attribution theory in the movement of the student's locus of control, concept study, and imaging can significantly raise the comprehension scores of the advantaged student.

International education involves over 1.3 million students' world wide, and injects billions of dollars into the economies of supplier nations. Despite its importance, little empirical research is available on the international marketing of education. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The determination of what the concept ‘sustainable competitive advantage’ means within a service environment and the consequent establishment of key resources within Pam Golding Properties and the role that leadership and the creation of a learning organisation play, formed the core of this study. The case study was therefore undertaken to glean relevant information from reality in order to determine which resources that can be described as intangible assets and competences contribute in a sustainable manner to the organisation’s competitive advantage in a dynamic and changing business environment. Existing and historical resources including leadership and learning within the organisation were identified by means of semi-structured interviews with a range of company executives. These resources were then assessed by means of questionnaires that were distributed to a wide range of stakeholders within the organisation in terms of value for the client, sustainability and transferability. These outcomes, in turn, provided the basis for conclusions and recommendations for future utility in order to maintain competitive advantage that would ultimately lead to sustained superior performance on all fronts. The findings that were made, culminated in a visual representation of leadership and organisational learning that form the core of the organisation and simultaneously illustrating their interdependence with the other key resources, namely organisational culture, the Pam Golding Properties brand, reputation, teamwork, relationships, systems and procedures, managers and agents. These resources form the essence of the organisation. The organisational culture within Pam Golding Properties that is representative of the core values of integrity, honesty, sincerity and service delivery was found to be the overall resource that provides the organisation with sustainable competitive advantage. This was closely followed by the value of the brand and reputation, teamwork and inter-personal relationships, the utilisation of efficient systems and procedures and the recruitment and retention of competent managers and agents. Organisational leadership was found to instil confidence in the organisation. A common, shared vision that is understood and underwritten by all employees is however lacking and change needs to be managed in such a way that the organisation’s core ideology is not compromised, but an envisioned future should be communicated throughout. The brand carries out the promise of the culture and core values, but can be tarnished if the reputation for service excellence is not upheld and it can lose credibility if expectations are not met. The brand thus needs protection from within and this can only happen if the people in the organisation share in the process of and toward an envisioned future. It was established that meaningful change presupposes continual improvement in a dynamic, yet sustainable organisation. It was therefore also recommended that a concerted effort be made to actively promote and strive towards the company becoming a true learning organisation in order to sustain its culture, brand, reputation and other intangible assets and competences. In the event that these and other recommendations in terms of resources are seriously considered and strived for by company leaders, this organisation should be an example to the rest of the world regarding sustainable competitive advantage.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die bepaling van wat die konsep ‘volhoubare mededingende voordeel’ beteken binne ‘n diensomgewing en die daaropvolgende vasstelling van sleutelhulpbronne binne Pam Golding Eiendomme en die rol wat leierskap en die skep van ‘n leerorganisasie speel, het die kern van hierdie studie gevorm. Die handelsnaam moet dus van binne uit beskerm word en dit kan slegs gebeur indien die mense in die organisasie aan die proses van ‘n gevisioneerde toekoms deelneem. Dit is bevind dat betekenisvolle verandering aaneenlopende verbetering in ‘n dinamiese, dog volhoubare organisasie veronderstel. Daar is dus ook voorgestel dat ‘n doelbewuste poging aangewend word dat die wording van ‘n ware leerorganisasie aktief gepromoveer en nagestreef behoort te word om sodoende die kultuur, handelsnaam, reputasie en ander ontasbare bates en bevoegdhede vol te kan hou. Indien hierdie en ander voorstelle ten opsigte van hulpbronne ernstig deur die maatskappy se leiers bedink en nagestreef word, behoort hierdie organisasie vir die res van die wêreld ‘n voorbeeld van volhoubare mededingende voordeel te wees.

Some leaders of U.S. companies fail to implement proper decision-making strategies to enact and execute strategies to realize the benefits provided by a foreign trade zone (FTZ). The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore and to identify the proper decision-making strategies used in successfully implementing a FTZ. The target population consisted of 5 leaders, including a senior leader, a supply chain manager, and 3 department managers of a company located in the midwestern region of the United States that successfully implemented a FTZ. Porter's competitive advantage theory was the conceptual framework used for the study. Semistructured interviews were conducted with the 5 participants; company documents served as additional sources of data. Triangulation and member checking were used to ensure the trustworthiness of the data interpretation. Three themes (import and export, training, and new processes) emerged from the analysis. The findings of this study could contribute to social change by presenting leaders with information about how to enhance decision-making skills when considering the application of a FTZ to enable the capacity for improvement of social infrastructure that includes telecommunications, electricity, water, and roads.

My aim in this work is to identify and contextualize the goals driving contemporary post-secondary education reform in New Brunswick. I do this by grounding the 2007 Advantage New Brunswick Report and New Brunswick Action Plan in the general historical context of higher education. I provide a descriptive account of the policies under review with a view to the ideals of a liberal arts education. Through a critical theory framework, I relate the contents of the policies under review to neo-liberal ideology, professional, bureaucratic and managerial hegemony. My focus is on the place of the liberal arts and humanities in a system dominated by the corporate imperatives of professionalization, specialization and bureaucratization. I propose as a response to neo-liberal policies that seek to make education instrumental to the needs of the market returning to history, philosophy and classics as the core of a liberal arts education.
