The United Kingdom, Sweden and Canada are participants in an International Energy Agency programme designed to co-ordinate R and D activity on energy from waste (EFW) technologies. The scope and content of the individual national R and D programmes are a direct result of the different institutional, economic and environmental factors that govern application of such technologies in each country. A description of these factors is given together with an assessment of their influence in shaping the existing and likely future role of landfill gas, refuse-derived fuel and mass incineration in each country.

Waste-based feedstocks and bioenergy intermediate carriers are key issues of the whole bioenergy value chain. Towards a circular economy, changing upcycling infra-structure systems takes time, while energy-from-waste (EfW) technologies like waste pyrolysis and gasification could play an integral part. Thus, the aim of this study is to propose a circular economy pathway for the waste to energy (WtE) thermochemical technologies, through which solid biomass waste can be slowly pyrolyzed to biochar (main product), in various regionally distributed small plants, and the pyro-oils, by-products of those plants could be used as an intermediate energy carrier to fuel a central gasification plant for syngas production. Through the performed review, the main parameters of the whole process chain, from waste to syngas, were discussed. The study develops a conceptual model that can be implemented for overcoming barriers to the broad deployment of WtE solutions. The proposed model of WtE facilities is changing the recycling economy into a circular economy, where nothing is wasted, while a carbon-negative energy carrier can be achieved. The downstream side of the process (cleaning of syngas) and the economic feasibility of the dual such system need optimization.

Abstract Background Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are a major cause of nosocomial bloodstream infections. Enterococci exhibit remarkable genomic plasticity and can recombine through the acquisition of genetic material via mobile genetic elements (MGEs), including resistance genes. The accessory genome plays a major role in the evolution of enterococci within the human host. Thus, dissecting the entire genome (pan-genome) is of paramount importance to characterize the population structure of enterococci causing disease. Methods VENOUS is an ongoing prospective, observational study of adults with enterococcal bacteremia. From September 2016 to March 2018, E. faecalis (Efs) and E. faecium (Efm) were collected in 14 hospitals of a single hospital system and a major cancer center in Houston, TX, and a general hospital in Detroit, MI. Short- and long-read genomic sequencing were performed with Illumina MiSeq and Oxford Nanopore Technologies GridION X5, respectively. A proprietary bioinformatics pipeline was utilized for genome assembly and further analyses. Results 156 Efs and 98 Efm isolates from single patients were analyzed. The average proportion of core genes in each genome was 64.6% (53.0–74.1) and 49.1% (45.2–51.0) for Efs and Efm, respectively. The vanA gene cluster was identified in 5.1% (8/157) of Efs and 57.1% (56/98) of Efm. The plasmid-encoded aac(6′)-Ie-aph(2″)-Ia gene conferring high-level resistance to aminoglycosides was found in 37.6% (59/157) Efs, seven of which also possessed vanA. Long-read sequencing of vanA-harboring plasmids from a subset of VRE revealed that the vanA cluster was carried in plasmids ranging from 31.7 to 132.3 kb. Although the vanA operon was fairly conserved, insertions of MGE were identified in the intergenic regions of vanS/vanH and vanX/vanY. Furthermore, a variety of MGE insertions mediated integration of the vanA operon, including IS1216 and IS256 (figure). Conclusion Accessory genes, including AMR genes, comprise a significant proportion of the enterococcal pan-genome, indicating major genetic plasticity within these organisms. Acquired resistance genes seem to have a high degree of recombination and play a substantial role in the expansion of the genomic repertoire in clinical isolates. Disclosures Samuel L. Composing a paragraph in English is almost the same as writing an essay, namely by consisting of three main parts (introduction (topic sentence), body (supporting sentences), conclusion (concluding sentence)) to deliver a message to the readers. Because of this feature of teaching students how to create paragraphs under the proper instruction in practice, blended learning technologies enable both teachers and students to adapt the educational environment for the system of improving their (learners’) paragraph writing skills in the digital era of educational development. This study investigates the potential of blended learning technologies on students’ writing skills, especially paragraph writing in English as a foreign language (EFL). It examines students’ most improved EFL writing areas and perceptions while utilizing blended learning technologies to foster their paragraph writing skills in a systematic way. In this experiment, two groups of EFL writing course students participated during the first-semester 2021-2022. A mixed-method design was implemented into the experiment: course evaluation questionnaires, achievement tests, and students’ portfolios on writing tasks. Findings of the investigations illustrated that most of the participants’ mistakes were in composing topic sentences, creating ideas, and providing concluding sentences coherently and cohesively. The study showed that blending learning technologies in the environment of higher pedagogical education assisted both teachers and students to conduct lessons on the writing skills in a more effective and convenient way.

Анотація:
The article describes the importance of using Information Technologies in teaching English as a foreign language (EFL). It deals with some problems in the process of teaching EFL for students. Nowadays the importance of incorporating Information Technologies in Foreign Language (FL) education has often been emphasized, especially by foreign language pedagogy scholars. The aim of the paper was to summarize the results of the observations carried out at Nukus state pedagogical institute in Nukus in order to map ways of improving students’ foreign language were developed suitably and sufficiently in the observed EFL lessons. The analysis showed that EFL courses at the institution tend to regard the importance of integrating skills with the usage of ICT in FL education. As a result of discussion and analysis we concluded that it is pivotal to make use of 21st century skills in the process of teaching EFL.

Even the groundswell of interest in mobile applications has not so far contributed to their integration into educational programs as an EFL learning tool. The purpose of the present review is to identify the current state and prospects for the use of mobile technologies in EFL teaching. The methodological basis of this research is a theoretical analysis of the literature data on the research topic. The evaluation of contemporary empirical studies conducted in Australia, China, Iran, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Cyprus, Japan, Malaysia, Spain, Taiwan and other countries, has led to a conclusion that the implementation of mobile technology in EFL teaching gives predominantly positive results due to several merits of mobile devices relative to standard pedagogical tools. It was however underlined that researchers have yet to learn how to conduct methodologically sound, statistically relevant studies that would cover aspects of learning activities beyond the use of mobile technology. The authors conclude that when studying applications, researchers should not try to find a mobile application that can teach students everything they need, but should study the ways in which individual applications help to master a foreign language.

Objective. To evaluate the effectiveness of application radio-wave surgery device “Surgitron” and high-frequency electrosurgery devices “ERBE ICC 200”, “EFA”, “KLS Martin” for treatment of patients with combined anorectal pathology. Methods. The treatment results of patients (n=635) with a combined anorectal pathology have been analyzed. The use of the «Surgitron» radio-wave surgery apparatus 245 (38.6%) patients were operated on, the «ERBE ICC 200» high-frequency electrosurgery apparatus - 169 (26.6%) patients, the «EFA» high-frequency electrosurgery apparatus - 114 (17.9 %) patients, «KLS Martin» high-frequency electrosurgery apparatus - 107 (16.9%) patients. After those surgical interventions to assess the effectiveness of the abovementioned current technologies, patients were conducted a morphological examinationto determine the depth of the necrosis of tissues. Results. According to the study results it has been established that application of the “Surgitron” radio-wave surgery device, “ERBE ICC 200” high-frequency electrosurgical devices “EFA”, “KLS Martin” reduces duration of the operation up to 15-30 min, the volume of bleeding - up to 10-30 ml, need in narcotic drugs - up to 1-4 ml, period of hospitalization - up to 3-6 days. Using these technologies prevented the formation of anal strictures and scar pararectal deformations due to the insignificant depth of tissue necrosis (the depth 0,036 -l 0,453 mm), ensuring the cosmetic effect of combined operations. Conclusion. Application of the “Surgitron” radio-wave surgery device and “ERBE ICC 200” high-frequency electrosurgical devices, “EFA”, “KLS Martin” for treatment of patients with combined anorectal pathology reduces the operation duration, volume of bleeding and intensity of the postoperative pain. Use of these current technologies promotes the formation of a delicate elastic scar causing faster healing of postoperative wounds and improving the terms of patients’ rehabilitation. What this paper adds A comparative evaluation of the effectiveness of using high-frequency electrosurgery devices “ERBEICC 200”, “EFA”, “KLSMartin” and radio-wave surgery device “Surgitron” for treatment of patients with combined anorectal pathology has been firstly made; also a degree of pathomorphological changes in tissues of anal canal and rectum after using the aforementioned current technologies has been studied to assess the effectiveness of their use for treatment of combined anorectal pathology.

The issues of application of new information technologies in accounting are considered. Peculiarities of automated accounting in the conditions of domestic reality are singled out, methodical principles of informatization of administrative activity are shown. The classification of software products used for automation of accounting is made, the rating of the most widespread programs for informatization of administrative activity in our country is resulted. The main advantages and disadvantages of using information technology in the organization of accounting are shown. Problems of automation of administrative activity at transition to the international standards are considered. A critical assessment of well-known authors and scientists of the modern level of automated accounting in economics is given. Particular attention is paid to the use of remote hardware and software resources in solving problems of informatization of management. Prospects of application in the account of the expert systems constructed on the basis of high-level software products are considered. Some problems of information protection that pose a threat to the use of information technology in management tasks are highlighted. The role of the person in the automated system of accounting, irreplaceability of experience and professionalism of the accountant at any level of development of information technologies is shown. All this makes it possible to create a single information space for the enterprise. Studies have shown that only the integrated development of conceptual accounting models, transformed into mathematical and algorithmic models, in combination with information technology will make it possible to raise accounting to a higher level. Thus, the development of information technologies and the digitalization of the economy make it possible to change the functions performed by accounting services and transform accountants from information input operators into economists-controllers and information users.

Introduction. The paper analyzes the works of scientists on the development of competences in the researched disciplines of the information technology cycle. The distribution of competencies according to different methodologies is shown. The classification of competencies is described. The technological toolkit of a single informational and educational environment has been studied. The concept of accumulation of competences is highlighted. The purpose of thr paper is to investigate the implementation' methodology of the competence approach to the study of the information technology' cycle disciplines Results. The paper presents the main software products. The author's vision of solving the problem of information technology development in universities is presented. The competency-based approach is determined by the pan-European trend of building educational programs of higher education - Tuning and its use in the educational process of Ukraine. The study of general competencies was one of the most important tasks of the implementation of the Tuning project in the educational process. Obtaining the planned results of the educational process is facilitated by the effective organization of independent work of the discipline "Internet technology" with the use of a single informational and educational environment. In such conditions, the approach to evaluation changes. The usual setting of grades for the discipline turns into tying grades to individual competencies that the student must acquire in the process of learning. The assessment for each work becomes multi-component. It has been established that the technological toolkit of a single informational and educational environment is an effective means of assessing the level of competence formation of higher education seekers. To use it, you need to create a "Competence Repository". Conclusions. Summarizing, we can draw the following conclusions. Thus, mastering the content of the disciplines of the cycle of information technologies by students of higher education in the conditions of a single informational and educational environment allows to speed up the process of obtaining and consolidating information, simplifying its perception, mastering a large amount of educational material in a fairly short period of time. Most higher education students are happy to learn new technologies with the help of their devices, develop intellectual abilities and try to increase their level of use of Internet technologies. And teachers get the opportunity to shape the development trajectories of each student; fundamentally new opportunities for the organization of research, project activities and adaptation of educational material to real life; fundamentally new opportunities for knowledge transfer: video lectures, webinars, video broadcasts, integrated practical classes, cooperative laboratory work; online communication. Therefore, the combination of face-to-face and remote forms of education is the next evolutionary step towards providing the educational process with the properties of adaptability, flexibility, openness and mobility.

This thesis deals with the issue of interoperability of electronic toll systems in road transport. The first chapter contains basic information from the charging of infrastructure with a focus on technology EFC systems. The second chapter focuses on chosen toll systems. The third chapter is focused on the European Electronic Toll Service and the basic concepts of interoperability. The fourth chapter is a key part dealing with interoperable EFC systems in Europe. The final part of this thesis evaluates this topic and summarizes the basic knowledge, while also evaluates the state of charging infrastructure in the Czech Republic and its possibility of development in the field of interoperability EFC.

A comprehensive cost comparison of an Explosive Storage Magazine (ESM) and two alternatives: the Explosive Remnants of War Collection Point (ERW-CP) and Blastwrap are analyzed to determine future options. The goal of this project is to identify and document both cost comparisons, as well as requirement satisfaction for the safe and cost-effective temporary storage in troubled regions around the globe.

Background: The importance of data increases for current and future companies. As a result of prominent research within the field of information and communication technology, the interest in Internet of Things (IoT) and its industrial applications has grown strong from both research and the public sector. Due to advancements in the technological infrastructure, the IoT-solutions are available to the broader market, but despite being accredited with praise and promise of real potential, current IoT-solutions are mostly utilized by large enterprises (LE:s). A fundamental understanding for the cause of the aforementioned unbalance was acquired by revisiting theory and former studies of technology diffusion. It appears that the challenge for IoT-solutions resonates with a recurring phenomenon within diffusion of new technology. As a result from rapid advancements, technology often finds itself in a productivity paradox. This basically means that practitioners perceive them as too expensive and too complicated to use, thusly, they won’t be as productive as required to generate enough economic value. Therefore, new technologies can paradoxically be unproductive. As demanded from research and commercial actors, this study seeks to deepen the understanding for the cause of Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SME:s) Intention to use IoT-solutions, hence bridging the current market unbalance and gap in research. Objective: The purpose of the study is to deepen the understanding for SME:s Intention to use IoT-solutions. Therefore, the study is based on the research question: Which factors can explain SME:s Intention to use IoT- solutions? Methods: To find a proper tool for analysis, the author probed the literature of technology acceptance models related to sociology and psychology. With an explorative research design, an adapted version of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and use of Technology (UTAUT) was developed according to the reaming parts of the literature review. 6 hypotheses were formulated based on the research question and UTAUT. Thereafter, a survey was used to collect quantitative data from 165 SME:s within the Swedish sector of manufacturing. The hypotheses were tested with the support of Explorative Factor Analysis (EFA) and multiple regression analysis in SPSS. Results: The main result shows that Performance expectancy, Facilitating conditions, Social Influence and Price value exerts a significant correlation with the Intention to use IoT- applications. Effort Expectancy and Hindering conditions was to be found insignificant. The factors explained 27,9% of the total variance within the Intention. An additional effect from the survey reveals a low amount of knowledge for IoT- solutions amongst the responding SME:s. Conclusions: In light of the objective, the result provides both practical and theoretical implications. Practically, commercial actors can use the findings from this study to influence the Intention to use IoT-applications within the Swedish manufacturing sector by operationalizing Performance expectancy, Facilitating conditions, Social Influence and Price value. From a theoretical perspective, the extended and validated version of the current technology acceptance models, UTAUT-FP, can be applied for future research.
Bakgrund: Dataflödet intar en alltmer central funktion för sam- och framtidens företag. Som ett resultat av framstående forskning och tekniska landvinningar på området för informations- och kommunikationsteknologi har ett uppseendeväckande intresse för Internet of Things (IoT) - och dess industriella tillämpningar - vuxit fram. Med den nödvändig infrastrukturen väl på plats är dagens IoT-lösningar tillgängliga för en bred marknad. Men trots lovord om oumbärliga konkurrensfördelar så återfinns majoriteten av dagens IoT-lösningar likväl hos stora företag (SF). En grundläggande förståelse för orsaken förvärvades genom att återbesöka teori och tidigare studier över acceptans för nya teknologier. Problemet med IoT-lösningar visar sig resonera med ett återkommande fenomen för spridning av ny teknologi. Som ett resultat av hastig teknikutveckling uppstår regelbundet en så kallad produktivitetsparadox. Det visar sig att frontlinjens teknologier alltid löper risken att upplevas som för dyra och komplicerade i relation till hur mycket värde användaren uppfattar att de skapar. För att överbrygga dagens låga användning av IoT-lösningar efterfrågar forskare och kommersiella aktörer sålunda en djupare förståelse för vad som formar Små och Medelstora Företags (SMF:s) Intention till att använda ny teknologi, i denna studie IoT-lösningar. Syfte: Syftet med studien är att fördjupa kunskapen om varför SMF inte använder IoT- lösningar. Således utformas studien efter forskningsfrågan: Vilka faktorer kan förklara SMF:s Intention till att använda IoT-lösningar? Metod: För att hitta ett adekvat analysverktyg sonderade författaren fältet av beteendevetenskapens adoptionsmodeller för ny teknologi. Utifrån en explorativ forskningsansats anpassades Unified Theory of Acceptance and use of Technology (UTAUT). I enlighet med studiens litteraturgenomgång bildade författaren således UTAUT-FP. Med bas i forskningsfrågan och UTAUT-FP utvecklades 6 hypoteser. Med en enkätundersökning samlades kvantitativa data in från 165 SMF. Med Explorativ Faktoranalys (EFA) och linjär regressionsanalys kunde studiens hypoteser testats i SPSS. Resultat: Studiens primära resultat visar att faktorerna Prestationsföväntning, Underlättande förhållanden, Socialt inflytande och Prisbild utövar en signifikant korrelation med Intentionen till att använda IoT-lösningar. Indirekta Hjälpmedel och Förhindrande förhållanden var insignifikanta för Intentionen. Faktorerna förklarar 27,9% av Intentionens varians. En bieffekt av studiens enkätundersökning lyckas spegla SMF:s okunskap kring studiens särskilda aspekter av IoT-lösningar. Slutsatser: I ljuset av forskningsfrågan generar studiens resultat dels praktiska, dels teoretiska implikationer. Praktiskt medför resultatet att dagens leverantörer delges en djupare insikt för hur de kan påverka SMF:s inställning och således Intention till IoT-lösningar genom att operationalisera resultatet för Prestationsföväntning, Underlättande förhållanden, Socialt inflytande och Prisbild. Teoretiskt bidrar studien med en validerad adoptionsmodell för IoT- lösningar - UTAUT-FP.

This qualitative case study investigated EFL teachers’ perceptions of knowledge and skills concerning integration of technologies into teaching of English at a university in Vietnam. It explored how EFL teachers integrate technologies in their daily teaching practices. A Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework was used to guide research design, data collection and data analysis. Findings show that participants vary significantly in terms of knowledge and skills, and in how they use technologies productively in teaching practices. The study suggests that to support meaningful integration, EFL teachers need to develop three key knowledge types: content, pedagogical and technological.

Les matériaux comme le béton présentent une meso structure de type matrice/inclusions visible à l'oeil nu. On propose dans ce travail de thèse une méthode de calcul par Eléments Finis à deux niveaux de résolution, intégrant des calculs à l'échelle de la meso structure à un calcul de structure. On souhaite par cette méthode décrire la ruine des structures en prenant en compte les phénomènes de fissuration à leur échelle d'occurrence. La stratégie de calcul adoptée s'inspire des méthodes de décomposition de domaines non recouvrants. Chaque élément composant le maillage de la structure accueille une description fine de la meso structure sous-jacente. La compatibilité cinématique entre ces deux niveaux est assurée par un raccord dual, au moyen de multiplicateurs de Lagrange localisés. Une architecture logiciel dédié a été implémentée en utilisant la technologie des composants et le middleware CTL (Component Template Library) déeveloppé à la TU Braunschweig. Pour la description de l'échelle mesoscopique, un modèle treillis a été employé. Concrete like materials display a matrix/inclusions heterogeneous meso structure visible to the naked eye. In this PhD thesis, an integrated multiscale Finite Element based strategy is proposed. The latter carries out simultaneously structural level computation and mesoscale ones which enriched the macro scale behavior. This method aims at describing global structural collapse accounting for complex failure mechanisms at their proper scales of occurrence. The proposed computational approach derives from non-overlapping domain decomposition techniques. Each element of a structure discretization receives a finner description of the underlying meso structure. Localized Lagrange multipliers ensure a dual compatibility between the macroscale and the mesoscale displacements. A dedicated parallel software architecture has been implemented using the middleware CTL (Component Template Library) developed at the TU Braunschweig. A lattice meso model has been employed in order to describe the fine scale. Each truss element is provided with two kinematics enrichments. Such model is able to account for the heterogeneous phase arrangement and the quasi-brittle behavior of such materials

Energy from Waste (EfW) is increasingly becoming an essential part of the contemporary mix of sustainable energy systems. EfW technologies consist of waste treatment processes that create energy in the form of electricity, heat or transport fuels (e.g. diesel) from a waste source. There exists a global movement towards reduction of dependence on fossil fuels and focus on exploiting renewable energy resources. Waste is available in abundance and recent studies only suggest an increasing tonnage of waste with a growing global population and diverse industries. Thermal treatment of waste has been around for over a century, with the first incinerator built in Great Britain. The social acceptance of an EfW facility has come a long way since then, with a conscious shift away from a waste landfill as a feasible solution. Generating usable EfW resources, which would otherwise go to landfill, has unquestionable environmental and economic benefits. With a large number of waste disposal operations, establishing itself amongst key solutions as part of waste management in European cities, an efficiency scaling method was developed by the European Commission to incentivize energy recovery operations. This essentially differentiates between waste disposal and energy recovery operation. The efficiency scaling method, known as R1 thermal efficiency, has been adopted by Australian Environment Protection Agencies as well. The R1 energy-efficiency formula is widely used in the assessment of the thermal energy efficiency of an EfW facility. The R1 metric amongst other efficiency indicators is a means to assess the overall useful energy extraction process from waste. This thesis addresses potential gaps that exist in the R1 formula, particularly addressing a bias in the formula towards EfW plants of larger capacity and located in cooler climate zones. An analysis on the use of the R1 formula is presented to determine the recovery status of some EfW plants. Detailed R1 computations are provided to demonstrate the application of R1 guidelines to specific EfW technologies, incineration and gasification. The study proposes the application of climate and size correction methods in consideration of the disadvantage faced by smaller-sized EfW plants or those located in warmer regions in meeting the set threshold. A key highlight is the case based application of external variants, climate and size correction factors to EfW plants in different locations in Europe, in scaling the R1 value. The proposed size and climate correction factors are compared with the Climate Correction Factor (CCF) defined in the Waste Framework Directive (WFD) of the European Union. The application of the proposed correction factors lead to conservative R1 scaling when compared with the application of the WFD CCF. The introduction of the size correction factor addresses an important gap in the current WFD. Combined heat and power (CHP) modes of EfW plants have proven to be more efficient, given there is substantial demand of thermal energy. The research analyses CHP modes and relates the outcome to the R1 criterion for the select case studies. The work is novel and the proposed analytical model makes significant contributions to knowledge by demonstrating the impacts of external variants on the outcome of R1 thermal efficiency of EfW plants. The proposed calculation tool would enable engineers, site managers, system auditors with a methodology that can be applied for the initial assessment of R1 thermal efficiency of an EfW. The comparative analysis with European WFD formula and CHP mode provides a broader spectrum to gauge the efficiency of an EfW facility. A follow-on benefit of this work is the fact that it would enable a predictive assessment on a proposed EfW facility and hence assist in addressing concerns of environmental groups.

The occurrence of low-frequency Electric Resistance Welded (LF-ERW) or Electric Flash Welded (EFW) line pipe imperfections has been the root cause of many integrity management initiatives to minimize and mitigate the risk of pipeline failure across the oil & gas pipeline industry. Since their first appearance in the 1920s, defects in or near the LF-ERW and EFW seam repeatedly lead to either hydrostatic test or in-service failures. Where in the past In-Line Inspection (ILI) technologies might have experienced limitations in addressing vintage ERW line pipe defects, modern smart ILI technologies show enhanced capabilities. High resolution Electro-Magnetic Acoustic Transducer (EMAT) and Circumferential Magnetic Flux Leakage (CMFL) ILI technologies have advanced in the recent years enabling more challenging inspections. This paper summarizes the inspection results of 22″ ERW line pipe defects detected and reported by EMAT and CMFL. Correlation of ILI and manual NDE data enables evaluation of current ILI capabilities and improvement of current defect assessment methods.

As Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facilities make the leap into the twenty-first (21st) century, so does the demand for cost efficient air pollution control technology. In an effort to meet this rising demand, companies have to develop concepts that remove acid gases in an efficient, sustainable, and reliable way. The current market trend to provide the best available control technology (BACT) leads people searching for technologies that are: • Proven and have extensive records of success. • Highly efficient, resulting in low emission to the atmosphere, but requiring minimal investment. • Compact in design, simple, and low maintenance. • Offering high availability, low reagent consumption, and low residue levels. • Resulting in either clean or suppressed liquid effluents. This paper will specifically discuss the three main types of acid gas control technologies available in today’s marketplace, which include dry, semi-dry, and wet scrubbers. It will first focus on the acid gas control technology most commonly used in the US, the spray dryer absorber, followed by a typical Ring Jet® wet scrubber with packed bed, and finally, the Turbosorp® system. For each of the above technologies, this paper will present the concepts, advantages and disadvantages, achievable emissions, and capital and operating costs. It will then look at how each of these technologies is utilized at existing EfW facilities operating throughout the world and provide information on how each facility has been operating. Lastly, it will look towards the future of acid gas control technologies and provide insight into what advances are being made to meet the most stringent air emission regulation all over the world.

This paper focuses on recent advancements in the areas of imaging technology and flue gas temperature measurement which are providing new insights for plant engineers into combustion conditions and operation in Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facilities. The paper describes how Covanta Energy, an operator of over 30 EfW facilities and Enertechnix, a manufacturer of advanced combustion products and services, are developing new technologies in these following areas: Infra-red (IR) imaging using a mobile camera to provide active viewing of the boiler and combustion conditions; Digital recording of images of slagging, waste stream movement, and refractory inspection; Online inspection in back pass convection areas with a video camera that extends up to 20 feet into boiler. Furnace Exit Gas Temperature (FEGT) measurement integrating proven acoustic pyrometer technology to replace inherently inaccurate contact temperature methods such as thermocouples. The paper examines how each of these technologies is being introduced into EfW facilities operated by Covanta Energy. Actual results are used to evaluate the potential these new methods have for improving combustion, reducing maintenance costs and providing plant operators with useful tools for operating EfW facilities. Video images of the furnace and convection sections will be provided and discussed. FEGT data from comparative technologies is presented. The data is interpreted in order to compare the accuracy of the acoustic pyrometer measurement against other methods. Potential and determined benefits are presented and outlined. The paper attempts to provide a framework to help facilities understand the importance and impact of accurate FEGT measurement in the combustion process.

In December 2007 the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) took place in Bali. It was based on the IPCC report no. 4 presented in Barcelona on November 2007. The messages are briefly: • Warming of the climate system is unequivocal; • Global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions due to human activities have grown since pre-industrial times; • Continued GHG emissions at or above current rates would cause further warming and induce many changes in the global climate system during the 21st century that would very likely be larger than those observed during the 20th century; • Key mitigation technologies in the waste sector: Landfill Gas (LFG) methane recovery; waste incineration with energy recovery; composting of organic waste; controlled waste water treatment; recycling and waste minimisation; biocovers and biofilters to optimise methane oxidation. The above by the IPCC proposed mitigation technologies for the waste sector can be categorized regarding specific waste treatment scenarios and their efficiency expressed in kg CO2 equivalent emitted per ton of waste. • Landfill w/o LFG recovery 1850 kg CO2-eq; • Landfill with LFG recovery 250–775 kg CO2-eq; • Energy-from-Waste plant −1000..−100 kg CO2-eq. With a population of little over 300 million people and a per capita municipal waste generation rate of 760 kg/person.year, the total waste generated in the USA is about 230 million Mg/year (OECD). With the treatment scenarios discussed above, the following can be stated: • If all wastes were landfilled waste disposal would correspond to 425 million tons of CO2 equivalents. • If all wastes were incinerated in Energy-from-Waste (EfW) plants, the emissions could be reduced by about 500 million tons of CO2 equivalents (about 9% of today’s US CO2 output) and make the waste management sector a GHG emissions sink. • The total electricity generated from EfW plants could be as high as 15,000 MW replacing about 50 standard 300 MW power plant units. To an average US 4 person household about 3 t/year of municipal solid wastes can be allocated, corresponding to an annual difference between landfilling without LFG recovery and EfW treatment of about 6.9 Mg CO2-eq /year. If this household wanted to achieve the same reduction of CO2 equivalent emissions by other means than having these wastes burnt in a modern EfW plant, they have the following options: • Remove one automobile from use (EPA: 6.0 Mg CO2-eq /year); • Cut household electricity consumption by 80% (EIA: 7.8 Mg CO2-eq /year). The European parliament commission has proposed to reduce CO2 emissions in Europe to 20–30% below 1990 levels. In comparison with Europe, annual GHG emissions (CO2-eq/person year) in the U.S. today are on a level about double that of the Europe. In order to achieve a similar reduction in the U.S., significant efforts have to be done on all energy fronts. Energy-from-Waste (EfW) is one of them, which at the same time solves a space and pollution problem and does not leave these issues to future generations.

Covanta Energy, in cooperation with United Technologies Corporation (UTC), has evaluated, designed, and is in the process of installing an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system at its Haverhill Energy from Waste (EfW) Facility to improve heat recovery and energy efficiency, and to generate more clean renewable energy. ORC systems have been applied in geothermal applications and some other industrial processes to recover low grade and waste energy to generate electricity. This paper describes the design and integration of the ORC system into the Haverhill EfW steam cycle, and the landfill gas engine system, which also operates at the facility. The anticipated energy efficiency improvements and increased net power output have been analyzed and simulated. The results show that the integration of the ORC system could lead to a potential increase in the net power output by as much as 305 kWe in the summer and by 210 kWe in normal weather. It is also anticipated that with the ORC system the facility has the potential to improve the overall plant energy efficiency, as well as save city water.

Abstract Pipe body cracking and seam weld crack-like flaws can be encountered on virtually all pipeline systems and are traditionally repaired via a cutout, grinding, or full-encirclement metallic sleeves. Although the effectiveness of steel repair sleeves is well established, they have drawbacks when repairing out of roundness pipe and they can require large pipe excavations to find a suitable location for in-service welding. Moreover, finding a clean in-service welding landing zone can be difficult for vintage line pipe steel which have a higher probability of laminations and the potential of having seam weld defects in low frequency ERW/EFW pipe. Furthermore, safety is also a concern when welding onto an operational pipeline. An alternative to repairing planar flaws is the use of non-weldable, light weight, wet-lay carbon fiber composite system. A composite repair system has distinct advantages as it can contour to most pipe shapes, resulting in shorter repair lengths (and therefore shorter excavations), and no welding is required. Composite repair systems have historically been used to reinforce areas of external corrosion and dents; however, their use has not been fully extended to reinforce crack-like flaws. A study was conducted where three carbon-epoxy composite technologies were explored as an effective repair option for pipelines with crack-like defects. A total of 35 reinforced external axial cracks were tested in base material and the longitudinal weld in 1960’s ERW pipe samples. Each crack was initiated by fatigue from a machined notch. Pressure cycle testing from 10%–72% SMYS showed that the carbon composite repair systems tested can effectively repair axial external crack-like defects in the pipe base and seam weld. The repaired cracks in the ERW bond line ranged from 45% to 55% wall thickness deep and all survived 25,000 test cycles with less than 10% wall thickness of additional growth. The aggressive test pressure cycles correlate conservatively to 600 to 1,000 years of fatigue life for normal gas pipeline operations, which demonstrated a fatigue life extension of 3 to 5 times when compared to unreinforced defects that leaked below 10,000 cycles. The contents of this paper and associated insights are valuable to the pipeline industry in extending the use of carbon composite repair technologies to reinforcing cracks and seam weld crack-like flaws based on full-scale testing and metallurgical assessment of post-tested fatigue growth of cracks.

The Algonquin Power Energy-From-Waste (APEFW) facility is located in the suburban Toronto, Ontario city of Brampton. It receives approximately 140,000 metric tonnes (154,000 tons) of MSW per year from the Region of Peel (Region) and approximately 10,000 metric tonnes (11,000 tons) per year of international airport waste from the area’s two international airports. The APEFW facility commenced initial operations in 1992 and included four, 91 tonne (100 ton) per day Consumat two stage incinerators with heat recovery boilers and a dual-train air pollution control (APC) system consisting of evaporative cooling towers, venturi reactors and fabric filter baghouses. The APEFW facility expanded its capacity in 2001 with the addition of a fifth 91 tonne (100 ton) per day modular incinerator and heat recovery boiler. One of the stipulations in the permitting process was that the entire expanded facility meet more stringent emission standards that included a significantly lower nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission rate. After a review of several available NOx control technologies, the APEFW facility chose to install a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. While SCR systems are fairly common on EFW facilities in Europe, the APEFW facility is the only EFW facility in North America that currently operates with an SCR system and as such has gained valuable insight into the application and performance of this technology that is very relevant to the North American EFW industry. This paper discusses the operation and maintenance of the SCR system, compares pre- and post-SCR NOx emissions and presents capital and operating costs for the SCR including the cost per tonne of waste processed and the cost per tonne of NOx removed.

During combustion, most of the waste’s nitrogen content is transferred to the flue gases as nitrogen oxide, NOx. The EU Waste Incineration Directive defines a maximum emission limit value for NOx of 200 mg/Nm3 as a daily average value referred to 11% O2. Based on National Emission Ceilings (NEC) defined by the Gothenburg Protocol, it can be expected that the limit values for NOx in the EU will become even more stringent. In some European countries (e.g. The Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland) a lower emission limit has already been introduced. Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technologies are used in many cases to achieve the above-mentioned NOx limits. However, there are drawbacks to SCR systems such as high investment cost. Operation cost is also quite high due to the energy consumption necessary for the reheating of the flue gas as well as the increased pressure loss. Innovative technologies are therefore required to make it possible to reconcile both requirements: reduced emissions and increased energy efficiency. Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction (SNCR) systems are based on the selective reaction of ammonia or urea injected into the upper furnace. In many cases SNCR technologies are limited by the ammonia slip which increases in case of more stringent NOx requirements. According to the relevant BREF document, an ammonia slip limit of 10 mg/Nm3 is generally required at the stack. In order to achieve reduced NOx values, it is necessary to implement measures to reduce ammonia slip, by means of either a wet scrubber or a High-dust catalytic converter. EfW plants in Mainz (Germany) and Brescia (Italy) are examples of operational plants combining SNCR with such a catalytic converter type. In addition R&D activities are carried out on the development of simplified reaction mechanisms to be implemented in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes. With these tools it will be possible to describe the interaction between turbulent mixing, radiation and chemical reaction rates. Another option to achieve low NOx values (below 100 mg/Nm3) is the reduction of NOx by so-called primary measures, e.g. the Very Low NOx process (VLN), which has been developed by MARTIN jointly with its cooperation partners. The VLN process is based on a grate-based combustion system. The “VLN gas” is drawn off at the rear end of the grate and is reintroduced into the upper furnace in the vicinity of the SNCR injection positions. NOx will be reduced significantly, ensuring low NOx emission values at the stack as required, at low values for ammonia slip. The new EfW plant in Honolulu (USA) will be equipped with the VLN process. In Coburg (Germany), the VLN process will be retrofitted in an existing installation. This paper documents the potential and the limitations of different measures for NOx reduction as well as examples of recent innovative EfW plants in Europe using MARTIN technologies successfully.

The term Executive Functions (EFs) refers to a set of higher order cognitive processes that are critical for goal directed behaviour. They include inhibition (i.e., the ability to suppress task-irrelevant cognitive processing and ignore salient yet irrelevant features of the situation), shifting (i.e. the ability to switch between different operations or levels of processing), and updating (i.e. the ability to encode, hold and monitor incoming information in working memory, replacing information that is no longer relevant with new information). The most notable developmental change in children’s EFs occurs during the preschool period, and this is associable to and predictive of children’s general learning ability. For this reason, efforts to develop EFs in preschoolers is of vital importance. In recent years, only few studies have investigated the effect of EFs intervention on preschoolers, despite the potential preventive effect of early intervention on later developmental problems. A number of related solutions have been proposed over the years, including both paper-and-pencil activities and digital applications (e.g., software and videogames). However, few attempt have been made to integrate the many advantages of traditional, low-cost playful activities with the (often) powerful affordances of digital technologies. Hence, we propose just such a hybrid solution, with a set of mobile applications (apps) designed to foster EF development among early learners in education settings. We opted for such a solution as mobile apps have proved to be familiar, highly usable and well accepted among young children. At a more general level, this contribution seeks to provide useful input on the affordances and indicators that can help guide the effective choice of apps useful for developing EFs, and how these tools can be optimally introduced and employed in traditional teaching and learning programs.

Abstract Interposers used in 2.5D technologies introduce new challenges for Electric Fault Isolation (EFI) due to the multiple layers of silicon, metal layers, Through Silicon Vias (TSV), solder bumps and/or copper pillars making it hard for standard EFI techniques, such as thermal and optical techniques, to localize failures due to the opaqueness of these materials [1, 2, 3]. In this paper we show that shorts in 2.5D Integrated Circuits (IC) technologies can be localized accurately in x, y and z-direction using Magnetic Current Imaging (MCI) while injecting a low power current and showing that the materials used in 2.5D semiconductor manufacturing are fully transparent to magnetic fields.
