Concern regarding sustainability and climate change is increasing, which is forcing countries world-wide to take action. The Swedish government has set a goal of fossil-free tra_c until 2030. Battery Electric Buses (BEB) might be one of the solutions needed in order to reach this goal. However, currently its prevalence is at an early stage.   The purpose of this study is to investigate how the technological transition towards BEBs in Sweden a_ects the public transport operators (PTOs). Moreover, to investigate how a third party service provider of Fleet Management System (FMS) services can support the PTOs in this transition.   The research has been carried out in co-operation with a PTO and a FMS service provider. The research contributes to their current understanding of how they will be a_ected by the emerging technological transition. This thesis also contributes with new empirical data of the technological transition towards electric vehicles within public bus transport, seen as a Large Technical System. Conceptually it contributes, by exploring how external companies can support the technological transition towards BEBs, with the application of Technological Transitions theory and the Multi Layer Perspective framework.   The methodology used is a case study of the technological transition towards BEBs in Sweden. Data was collected through twelve semi-structured interviews with researchers, PTOs, public transport authorities (PTA), a BEB manufacturer and a FMS-service company. Parallel to this a questionnaire was distributed to the twenty largest PTOs in Sweden. Moreover data was collected from company visits, pilot-project results and internal documentation.   Our findings show that there are thirteen perceived barriers present among the PTOs, in the process of BEB adoption. Six of these barriers relate to component aspects of BEBs, and seven relate to managerial aspects. Perceived barriers linked to component aspects of BEBs are; Variation in solutions and lack of technical standards, the Charging infrastructure, Shorter range or decreased load capacity, Unknown functionality in cold climate, Reliability and Durability. Perceived barriers linked to managerial aspects of BEBs are; Lack of knowledge and experience, Behavioral change, Economy, Maintenance, Ownership of infrastructure and buses, Business models and Varying requirements from PTAs. The barriers FMS-service providers can address are primarily, due to the technological nature of the services, present at niche level. PTOs together with FMS-service providers are encouraged to together strive towards gaining deeper knowledge about the new emerging echnologies. Through this, PTOs could be enabled to overcome the aforementioned barriers. Three reverse salients were also identi_ed, linked to the aforementioned barriers. If the everse salients are assessed, BEB acceptance among PTOs could be increased. The three identi_ed reverse salients are, the battery technology, the charging infrastructure and the contracts/ownership. The co-operation with the commissioning PTO and FMS-service provider has led to valuable access to Swedish public transport actors, and has aided in a deeper understanding of the phenomena. Although, this co-operation might have exposed us to a risk of being influenced.

Biogas is largely utilised as vehicle fuel in public bus transport in Sweden today. This study investigates opportunities and barriers for continued domestic use and production of biogas, in relation to the ongoing electrification of public bus transport. The analysis is based on interviews with actors in public transport and the biogas sector, experts on biogas systems, and representatives for alternative user segments. Three regions were chosen as case-studies for investigations of prospects in public transport, i.e. Stockholm, Västra Götaland and Skåne, though alternative uses were studied from a national perspective. In addition to public transport, considered uses include road transport, sea transport, industries, and electricity and heat production. The study identifies a broad agreement among stakeholders that renewable resources should be implemented where they provide most benefits from a system perspective. Therefore, electric public buses are valued in urban environments, while biogas solutions are found suitable for regional routes. Biogas is further viewed as environmentally beneficial in all user segments except continuous electricity and heat production, where it largely would replace renewable rather than fossil sources. Regarding costs and competitiveness, probable future uses are identified within light and heavy-duty road transport, and in consumer-oriented industries, i.e. the food industry. Economic support in policy instruments is further considered essential for continuous development of the Swedish biogas sector, though current influential instruments, e.g. the tax exemption, are described as short-term and unpredictable. The willingness to pay for the collected societal benefits of biogas further decrease in transitions from public to private consumers, and as biogas solutions simultaneously are linked with limited or uncertain competitiveness in these sectors, risks prevail that such transitions could imply stagnations and declines in biogas use and production, given today’s situation.
Idag används biogas till stor del som drivmedel för bussar inom kollektivtrafik i Sverige. Denna studie undersöker möjligheter och hinder för en fortsatt nationell användning och produktion av biogas, i samband med att bussar inom kollektivtrafiken nu elektrifieras. Analysen är baserad på intervjuer med aktörer inom kollektivtrafiken och biogassektorn, sakkunniga inom biogas, och alternativa användare av biogas. Tre regioner, Stockholm, Västra Götaland och Skåne, valdes som fallstudier för analys av möjligheter för fortsatt användning inom kollektivtrafiken. Alternativa användningar studerades istället ur ett nationellt perspektiv, och inkluderade vägtransporter, sjöfart, industri och el- och värmeproduktion. Studien visar att det råder enighet mellan intervjupersoner att förnybara resurser över lag ska användas där de medför störst samhällsnytta sett till samhället i stort. Inom kollektivtrafiken beskrivs elbussar därför som fördelaktiga i stadsmiljöer, medan biogas ses som lämpligt i regional trafik. Biogas framställs dessutom som miljömässigt fördelaktigt i alla alternativa användningsområden utom kontinuerlig el- och värmeproduktion, eftersom då främst förnybara och inte fossila resurser ersätts. Med hänsyn till kostnader och konkurrenskraft ses lätta och tunga transporter tillsammans med kundnära industrier, t.ex. livsmedelsindustrin, som troliga framtida användningsområden för biogas. Ekonomiskt stöd från styrmedel bedöms vara nödvändigt för en fortsatt utveckling av biogassektorn i Sverige, även om dagens styrmedel, t.ex. skattebefrielsen, beskrivs som kortsiktiga och oförutsägbara. Betalningsviljan för biogasens samlade samhällsnyttor minskar också vid en övergång från offentliga till privata kunder. Eftersom biogas därtill har en begränsad eller osäker konkurrenskraft jämtemot andra alternativ i de privata segmenten, identifierar denna studie risker för stagnation eller nedgång i användning och produktion av biogas vid en eventuell utfasning från den offentliga sektorn, givet dagens situation.

Enligt (Regeringskansliet, 2017a) ska nettoutsläppen från Sveriges växthusgaser år 2045 inte påverka atmosfären vartefter Sveriges utsläpp ska bli negativa, vilket innebär att det används mer koldioxid än vad som släpps ut. För att uppnå klimatmålen kommer det krävas många nya lösningar i samhället. En allt mer drivande transportsektor med mer bilar på vägarna och fler parkeringsplatser är inte hållbart för framtida svensk trafik och arbetet mot klimatmålen. Att avlägsna oljedrivna fordon från transportsektorn skulle bidra till ett renare och mer attraktivt stadsklimat.   Studien syftar till att ta reda på hur en implementering av elektrisk-, även självkörande kollektivtrafik i Varberg ser ut, energimässigt, miljömässigt och ekonomiskt för tre stycken upplagda scenarier. I studien ingår även att undersöka ifall övertoner kan komma att inverka på elnätet. Projektet som är ett samarbete med Varberg Energi har uppkommit i samband med planeringen av det nya stadsområdet Västerport. I scenarierna finns tre olika bussar: en dieselbuss som återfinns i Varberg idag, en generell elbuss samt en självkörande elbuss som kallas Navya.   Den mängd passagerare som ska transporteras och vilken miljöpåverkan bussarna ger har stor inverkan på slutsatsen i rapporten. Med en svensk fossilfri bussflotta år 2020 visar denna rapport att Navyan är primärt rekommenderad upp till 15 personer och därefter är elbussen sekundärt rekommenderad. Implementering av elbussar är fullt möjlig och gör ingen betydande inverkan på det befintliga elnätet idag.
According to (Regeringskansliet, 2017a) Sweden’s greenhouse gas emissions shall not affect the atmosphere by the year 2045, which then becomes negative, this means that more carbon dioxide will be consumed rather than released into the atmosphere. In order to reach the climate goals, many new solutions to the society are required. A bigger transport sector with more cars and parking spaces is not sustainable for neither the future transport sector, nor the progressive work toward the climate goals. By removing oil-operated vehicles from the streets, a significant contribution to a cleaner city climate would be achieved.   The study aims to find out if an implementation of electric buses is possible in Varberg. A couple of key questions are raised: how much energy is required to support the buses? What are the costs of the various scenarios proposed? Will there be any problems with supporting many buses, in terms of harmonics and the electric power grid? The project, which is a cooperation with Varberg Energi, is proposing a realization of a new city area called Västerport, which would start construction 2020. The report constitutes three scenarios with a diesel bus, which is used in Varberg today, an electric bus and an autonomous electric minibus called Navya.   The number of passengers to be transported and the environmental effect of the buses has a big impact on the conclusion of the report. With a fossil free bus fleet by 2020, this report shows that the Navya is primarily recommended up to 15 passengers, and the electric bus for more passengers. The report concludes that the implementation of electric buses is possible. It will not have a considerable impact on the existing power grid and will contribute to a cleaner and more attractive city.

The ”civilized” world is in need of fossil fuel in order to function. Hybricon AB is a company in Umeå that is developing a technology that hopefully can reduce parts of this need. They are currently testing their two electrical busses (with Hybrid backup) in city traffic on the roads of Umeå in cooperation with the county of Umeå.                                 The busses are originally diesel-busses, but the diesel motor has been replaced with two electrical hub-motors with a power of 145 kW each that are powered by batteries. The batteries are charged at the end station after each route. In case the batteries should run low on capacity during driving, they can be recharged by the so called genset. The genset consists of a diesel-engine with a generator.   A general problem with electrical vehicles is their lack of waste heat for compartmental heating, due to higher efficiency of the electrical engine and the fact that the energy conversion doesn’t involve combustion. An ordinary diesel-buss can use the waste heat from the engine for compartmental heating, but even that is not enough to satisfy the need of heat to keep the bus warm in for example northern Sweden, where the climate is very cold during winter.   The purpose of this thesis is to help Hybricon investigate how big the heat losses are for the electrical busses and thereby calculate the maximum need of heating power, and also investigate what different energy efficient actions can contribute to lowering the need of heating power. The goal for Hybricon is to be independent of fossil fuels for the heating of their busses, after future energy efficient actions.   The power for heating in the bus at its original manufactured state is between 40-50 kW when the doors are closed and between 100-500 kW depending on the number of doors open simultaneously (one, two or three).   Through energy efficient actions in the climate shell, the maximum heating power for the bus can be lowered by 22,4 % when the doors are closed and about 3,5 % when doors are open. It is shown that the biggest heat loss occurs when one or more doors are open. Many energy efficient actions must be made and especially the heat loss through the doors must be lowered significantly, if the busses are to be heated in an energy efficient way and without need of fossil fuels.
Den ”civiliserade” världen är idag helt beroende av fossila bränslen för att fungera. Företaget Hybricon AB i Umeå jobbar med att utveckla en teknik som förhoppningsvis kan minska en del av detta beroende. Hybricon testkör idag sina två elbussar (med hybridbackup) på Umeås gator i linjetrafik genom samarbete med Umeå kommun.   Bussarna är ombyggda dieselbussar, där dieselmotorn har bytts ut mot två elektriska navmotorer på 145 kW vardera som drivs av batterier. Batterierna laddas upp vid slutstationen mellan varje tur och retur. Om batterierna mot förmodan skulle ha för lite kapacitet under körning kan de även laddas upp via ett s.k. genset, som består av en dieselmotor med en generator.   Ett generellt problem med elfordon är dock deras brist på spillvärme för uppvärmning av kupén, eftersom elmotorer har mycket högre verkningsgrad än förbränningsmotorer och energiomvandlingen inte innefattar någon förbränning. En vanlig dieselbuss har tillgång till spillvärme från kylningen av motorn, men även det är för lite för att klara uppvärmningen av bussen i kallare delar av världen som norra Sverige.   Detta examensarbete syftar till att hjälpa Hybricon utreda hur stora värmeförlusterna är i elbussarna och därmed kvantifiera det maximala uppvärmningsbehovet samt att utreda hur mycket olika energieffektiviserande åtgärder skulle kunna minska uppvärmningsbehovet. Målet för Hybricon är att deras bussar ska kunna värmas upp utan hjälp av fossila bränslen efter framtida energieffektiviseringar.   Elbussens dimensioneraden effekt för att motverka värmeförlusterna i originalutförande uppgår till 40-50 kW när dess dörrar är stängda. Den effekt som krävs när bussen har dörrar öppna är mellan ca 100 – 500 kW beroende på om en, två eller tre dörrar står öppna samtidigt.   Genom att energieffektivisera där de största förlusterna finns i klimatskalet så kan värmeeffekten minskas med 22,4 % när dörrarna är stängda och 3,5 % när bussens dörrar är öppna. Det visar sig alltså att de största förlusterna sker när en eller flera dörrar står öppna på bussen. På många ställen i bussen men framför vid värmeförlusterna genom dörrarna måste omfattande energieffektiviseringar utföras för att minska effektbehovet för uppvärmning, om elbussarna ska kunna värmas upp på ett energieffektivt sätt och utan hjälpa av fossila bränslen.

The area chosen for this study is the Central Elburz of Iran surrounding the southern end of the Caspian Sea. It includes an important rainfall dependent agricultural area and merges into the semi arid zone with a well defined boundary. From social and agricultural points of view rainfall is by far the most important climatic factor in many tropical and subtropical countries. An important aspect in the development of agriculture in the Central Elburz is the determination of the seasonal rainfall patterns. This thesis should be considered as a contribution to the study of the seasonal rainfall regime of Iran, with direct value to agriculture in the region. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the pattern of rainfall especially in relation to the growing season both in time and spatially. Also the thesis describes the variation in the availability of moisture for growth throughout this region. The thesis examines annual, monthly and seasonal rainfall over the region. Multivariate analysis has demonstrated that the study area can be divided into three rainfall regions. Before considering any analysis which could allow prediction on probability of future rainfall amounts, it is important to consider whether or not there on trends or fluctuations. The result of this analysis is that, few stations show positive trends, others negative trends. Rainfall variability has been quantified by the coefficient of variation index and analysed in a similar way to that of rainfall distribution. The results for most stations shown a relationship between variability indices and rainfall amounts. In relation to the study of variability, an assessment of rainfall probability and reliability has been considered with reference to rainfall critical for crops. Probability has a particular value in its application to agriculture. In this study 90% probability is examined and this is related to the economy of the agriculture units in the Central Elburz. Also 80 and 75 percent probability are presented. These spatial patterns of probability thus provide maps of agricultural potential. Rainfall records are analysed to provide estimates, percentage points of rainfall totals, variation in the start, and end of the rainy season and or the probability of dry spells within the rainy season. The estimation of potential evapotranspiration which are discussed and explained in this study are based on the Blaney- Criddle and Pan evaporation methods. The water balance approach provides the most rational method of analysing seasonal pattern since it considers characteristics of the dominant crops in this area, wheat and citrus, and it examines effectiveness of rainfall for these crops. Blaney- Criddle and Pan evaporation have been used to estimate potential evaporation for wheat and citrus and compared to actual evapotranspiration to give potential water deficit. The adoption of probability analysis of potential water deficit provides a valuable description of water availability for crops in this region of variable rainfall.

Functional and cost effective systems for the full electrification of a bus network are areas of intense research and development. The electrification can be accomplished using different technological solutions, for example using opportunity charging or using an electric road system – ERS. Both opportunity charging and ERS have the potential to be integrated into already existing bus lines. With opportunity charging, the regular dwell time at the end stops is used for the bus to recharge its batteries and with an ERS the bus can charge dynamically along the road. The purpose of this report is to analyze how the existing Alfa- and Beta line at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, in a functional and cost effective way, can be electrified using either opportunity charging or an ERS. The tradeoff between required charging power, battery capacity and the necessity to change the existing running schedule is explained in detail. In addition, the impact on the electrical grid is analyzed based on different load profiles of different charging stations using different power levels. The analysis is based on real data from the Alfa – and Beta line with its existing buses, the electrical grid at Arlanda and data provided by both the leading (electrical) bus manufacturers and the leading charging infrastructure manufacturers.  The outcome of this report suggests that a full electrification of the existing Alfa- and Beta line has the potential to lower CO2-emissions and energy use at a functional and cost effective way.

The behaviour of piping elbows under bending and internal pressure is more complicated than expected. The main problem is that the coupling of bending and internal pressure is non-linear; stress and displacement cannot be added according to the principle of superposition. In addition, internal pressure tends to act against the effect caused by the bending moment. If bending moment ovalises the elbow crosssection, with internal pressure acting against this deformation, then the deformed cross-section tries to deform back to the original circular shape. It is then introduced the term ''pressure reduction effect". Current design piping code treats the pressure reduction effect equally for in-plane (closing and opening) moment and out-of-plane moment. In this thesis, the pressure reduction effect is reassessed for in-plane closing moment through parametric study by performing detailed large deformation finite element analysis. The study is then extended to assess the pressure reduction effect for inplane opening moment and out-of-plane moment. Approximate formulae for ovalisation, flexibility, and stress-intensification factor are developed through a systematic analysis of the finite element generated data. Comparison of results presented in this thesis and the current ASME piping code for the pressure reduction effect under in-plane closing bending confirms that the ASME code formulae underestimates the pressure reduction for flexibility and stress-intensification. If the ASME formulae are applied for in-plane opening bending and out-of-plane bending, it overestimates the pressure reduction for the flexibility factor. If the ASME formulae for the pressure effect on stress-intensification factor is applied, it underestimates the pressure reduction for closing bending and out-of-plane bending, but overestimates for opening bending. It is therefore proposed that different formula for different direction of bending load should be used and the results presented in this thesis should be useful for this purpose.

The reactor coolant piping system is designed to be in compliance with the requirements of Class 1 piping of Section III of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Stress indices are required to evaluate the nuclear Class 1 piping. The reactor coolant system of Kori 1 nuclear power plant consists of a 2-loop system, each having two special elbows: one is the reducing elbow with a non-uniform thickness, and the other is the elbow with a splitter installed inside the elbow. However, stress indices for special elbows are not specified in NB-3683.7 of the ASME Code. In this paper, we computed the stress indices of special elbows for pressure and moment loads by the finite element analysis. The linear elastic method was used for the analysis with the finite element program, ANSYS, and the solid element (SOLID 45) was selected to model the geometry. The finite element model of the special elbows included a straight segment of pipe on each end of the elbows. The uniformly distributed internal pressure was applied to the pipe and elbow. The equivalent axial blow-off load was applied to one end, and the translational degree of freedom was fixed at the other end of the model. The moment was applied to one end, and the boundary condition was fixed at the other end of the model. Based on the analysis results, it is concluded that stress indices, except B1, in NB-3683.7 of the ASME Code can be used for special elbows conservatively. More analyses are required to apply B1 index to the special elbows.

Motivated by the response of industrial piping under seismic loading conditions, the present study examines the behavior of steel process piping elbows, subjected to strong cyclic loading conditions. A set of experiments is conducted on elbow specimens subjected to constant-amplitude in-plane cyclic bending, resulting into failure in the low-cycle-fatigue range. The experimental results are used to develop a low-cycle-fatigue curve within the strain-based fatigue design framework. The experimental work is supported by finite element analyses, which account for geometrical and material nonlinearities. Using advanced plasticity models to describe the behavior of elbow material, the analysis focuses on localized deformations at the critical positions where cracking occurs. Finally, the relevant provisions of design codes (ASME B31.3 and EN 13480) for elbow design are discussed and assessed, with respect to the experimental and numerical findings.

Flexibility Factor is an important parameter for the design of piping system related to oil, gas and power industry. Elbows give a great flexibility to piping system, but where a trunnion is attached to an elbow in order to support vertical pipe sections, the piping flexibility is affected. Generally, determination of elbow flexibility factors has been performed by engineering codes such as ASME B31.3 or ASME B31.8, or using the Finite Element Method (FEM) and Finite Difference Method (FDM). In this work, bend flexibility factors for 3D models of piping elbows and piping elbows with trunnion attachments using the Boundary Element Method (BEM) are calculated. The BEM is a relatively new numerical method for this kind of analysis, for which only the surface of the problem needs to be discretized into elements reducing the dimensionality of the problem. This paper shows the simulation of 9 elbows with commercially available geometries and 29 geometries of elbows with trunnion attachments, 10 of them using commercial elbow dimensions, with applied in-plane and out-of-plane bending moments. Structured meshes are used for all surfaces, except the contact surface of elbow-trunnion joints, and no welded joints are simulated. The results show smaller values of flexibility factors of elbow and elbow–trunnion attachments in all loading cases if are compared to ASME B31.3 or correlations obtained from other works. The results also indicate that flexibility factor for elbow-trunnion attachment subjected to in-plane bending moment is greater than flexibility factor for out-of plane bending moment. Accuracy of BEM’s results were not good when flexibility characteristic values are lesser than 0.300, which confirm the problems of this numerical method with very thin-walled structures. The method of limit element could be used as tool of alternative analysis for the design of made high-pitched system, when the problem with very thin-walled structures is fixed.

A method is proposed to calculate Flexibility Factors for molded and mitered 90° polyethylene elbows for both in-plane and out-of-plane loading based on Code Case N-319-3, Jan. 17, 2000. Displacement measurements in the direction of the applied forces were made during the testing of each elbow in addition to measuring the applied forces. By making use of Code Case equations, Flexibility Factors can be directly developed. Appendices to the paper show how these factors can be added to the deformation and rotation equation from curved Euler beam theory. One of the basic assumptions used in the Code Case and in this derivation is that there is no ovalization from torsion. Thus, the Flexibility Factor for the torsional displacement (twisting) of an elbow is one. Results show that an exact solution for Flexibility Factors based on the definition in Section III of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code can be obtained for in-plane loading. However, for out-of-plane loading, the Flexibility Factors are geometry dependent if the values are based on measured elbow deflections. The difference is associated with the contributions of both torsion and bending to elbow deflections.

Elbows in pressure pipes are important parts in the pipe inspection, which may become serious corrosion locations. Ultrasonic detection is a main technique for pipe inner inspection, and the use of traditional ultrasound and phased array technique for in-line inspection are advanced, long-term interesting and known by researchers. Several devices were invented for inside pipeline inspection and is suitable to some extent such as detecting long-distance pipelines. However, elbows especially tight elbows are still difficult to implement inner detection or travelling. To obtain a good effect in detecting elbows with ultrasound, the inner inspection technique was investigated. Spherical and flat cylindrical probe holder structures were proposed to ensure the ability to pass through elbows, while the spherical holder has a large number of conventional probes in its shell with a uniform arrangement and was designed to give a full view for ultrasonic detecting. As regards the flat cylindrical probe structures, it is more suitable for phased array ultrasonic technique to form a convex array. Both methods were proposed for better echo directions and amplitudes, and aimed to obtain the information of elbow characteristics. CIVA simulation was conducted based on the above design, and the focal effects were analyzed. Comparing with detecting precision and manufacture process, the phased array technique with flat cylindrical probe holder was chosen, and its device manufacturing and elbow inspection experiments were carried out. CIVA simulation was also used to analyze the influence of array and element parameters on the echo detection, and the design parameters were determined about the convex phased array. The experimental elbow was designed and manufactured with specific artificial defects. The ultrasonic system was taken by a robot to travel through the elbow, and the experimental data were used to verify the applicability of the ultrasonic inspection technique.
