The single and endemic species of Eupterote Hübner recorded from Australia is shown not to possess the male genitalia typical of this genus, nor of any other genus of Eupterotidae, and it is consequently placed in a new genus, Ebbepterote Oberprieler, Nässig & Edwards, as E. expansa (T. P. Lucas, 1891), comb. nov. Its genitalia are compared with those of many Asian and African genera of Eupterotidae, resulting in a revised classification and redefinition of the major eupterotid lineages. Five groups are defined: a probably paraphyletic 'basal' Ganisa-group and likely monophyletic subfamili

Here, we report on the first record of the genus Eupterote Hübner, [1820] (Lepidoptera: Eupterotidae) from Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. This moth represents the new species Eupterote elisavetae sp. nov. that is described here. Previously, two endemic eupterotid species, i.e. Ganisa floresiaca Nässig, 2009 and Pseudojana floresina Nässig & Bouyer, 2010, were known to occur on the Flores Island.

AbstractThis paper is chiefly aimed at reassessing the limits of four bombycoid families, namely the Eupterotidae, Saturniidae, Lemoniidae, and Brahmaeidae. An incompletely resolved cladogram is proposed for the whole 'bombycoid complex' (Mimallonoidea + Lasiocampoidea + Bombycoidea). Within the Bombycoidea, the primary dichotomy is considered to lie between the Eupterotidae + Bombycidae s.lat. + Endromidae + Mirinidae + Saturniidae, and the Carthaeidae + Lemoniidae + Brahmaeidae + Sphingidae. Sharing at least nine synapomorphies, the Lemoniidae and Brahmaeidae are regarded as reliable sister

The revision of family Eupterotidae (Bombycoidea) is very less reviewed and studied by various entomologists around the globe. Later, family name was reinstated, synonymized or re-described and remain as a mystery. The purpose of this manuscript is to know about the current status of family Eupterotidae in the present scenario. This paper is providing the review, classification, economic significance of this family along with detailed remarks on two genus namely Eupterote and Apona with special reference to their wing venation and external genitalia of their type species.

A hasty survey to assess diversity of moths has been conducted at Ahmednagar College campus. A total of 34 species of moths belonging to 07 families and 15 subfamilies have been presented in this report. Of the total specimens, 26 moths were identified at specific level and remaining were given morpho-species label. Family Erebidae and Geometridae dominated in the study area, followed by Sphingidae, Noctuidae, Crambidae, Eupterotidae, and minimum number of species were noted from family Notodontidae. The present work is a minor investigation, but it may serve to contribute to the database for

In this study, Eupterote sp. nr. gardneri Byrk, 1950 (=Eupterote geminata (Walker) ssp. gardneri Byrk, 1950) is recorded for the first time as a pest of banana in India. The outbreaks and crop damage caused by the hairy caterpillars of this species are documented with illustrated images. The banana cultivars Palayamkodan, Nendran, and Ney Poovan in the field, as well as cv. Popoulu in insect net house studies, were identified as preferred host varieties. Detailed morphological characteristics of the final instar caterpillar and adults, along with photographic illustrations, are provided. The b

Apatelodidae is a family of New World bombycoids distributed mainly in the Neotropical region, with 14 genera, 222 valid species and 8 subspecies. These moths are medium-sized with a wingspan ranging from 2 to 8 cm, generally greyish, straw-yellow or reddish-brown, with darker spots and lines on the dorsal side of the wings. We combine adult morphology and molecular data to test, under a probabilistic framework, the monophyly of apatelodid genera and the placement of Tamphana (Bombycidae). We sampled the type species of 12 of the 14 valid genera of Apatelodidae, including the type species of s

This revision is part of a continuing series of taxonomic work aimed at the description of new taxa and the redescription of known taxa of the Tachinidae of Area de Conservación Guanacaste in northwestern Costa Rica. Here we describe 33 new species in the genus Belvosia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 (Diptera: Tachinidae). All species described here were reared from this ongoing inventory of wild-caught caterpillars spanning a variety of families (Lepidoptera: Erebidae, Eupterotidae, Noctuidae, Notodontidae, Saturniidae, and Sphingidae). We provide a morphological description of each species with lim
