The purpose of this study is to find out the impact of political general elections of Pakistan on KSE-100 index. We employed Event study methodology on closing prices of KSE-100 index over the time period January, 1998 to May, 2013. During our sample period, 3 events of political general Elections occurred i.e., Event1 in 2002, Event2 in 2008, and recently Event3 in 2013. We construct an Event window of 11 days consisting of 5 pre-event days, 1 on-event day, and 5 post-event days. Results of this study show that Events 1 -and 2 put significant negative impact on stock returns, while Event3 demonstrates a significant positive impact on stock returns. This study also revealed the pre -and post-event comparison for all of the three events and, suggested that as soon as the political situation of the country changes, behavior of investors towards political general election also changes. Manipulation in stock index has always been remained an inconclusive phenomenon for investors and policy makers. So, further evidence on an individual country level might suggest fruitful guidelines to both investors and policy makers.

Outdoor sport events evidently have an impact on the environment. If they are taking place in naturally protected areas this impact is even greater. By taking ’Le Grand Raid Réunion’, an international ultramarathon annually organized in the heart of an UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, as a case study, this paper concentrates on assessing the ecological impact of an outdoor sports event in a protected natural site. On the basis of datasets taken from official logistics lists and from a survey conducted among all event participants the analysis embraces ecological and carbon event footprinting. Measuring those two indicators allows identifying the specific event-related ecological impacts, including diverse variables caused by the athletes, the spectators, and the related organizational requirements. The results of the study thereby have the ability to strongly influence the future event policy and to function as a model for the assessment of the ecological impact of other outdoor sports events.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the impact indicators of the 2010 Taipei International Flora Exposition from the perspective of residents and to investigate the effects of these impacts on the urban sustainability through the perceptions of Taipei residents after the exposition. Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted a literature review and consulted experts to identify the impact indicators of the exposition. This process resulted in 17 indicators of economic impact, 12 indicators of environmental impact, and 13 indicators of social impact, and the authors developed a 12-dimension/42-indicator mega-event impact measurement scale. Using a survey of 1,628 host residents after the exposition, the authors performed regression analysis to investigate the effects of these impacts on the urban sustainability. Findings The results indicated that economic, environmental, and social impacts exerted significant positive effects on urban sustainability. All positive dimensions of economic, environmental, and social impact exerted significant positive effects on urban sustainability, and all negative dimensions exerted nonsignificant effects on urban sustainability. Originality/value This study identified the impact indicators of the 2010 Taipei International Flora Exposition and investigated the effects of these impacts on the urban sustainability. The findings of this study indicated that economic, environmental, and social impacts of the exposition exerted significant positive effects on urban sustainability.

OBJECT This study directly compares the number and severity of subconcussive head impacts sustained during helmet-only practices, shell practices, full-pad practices, and competitive games in a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I-A football team. The goal of the study was to determine whether subconcussive head impact in collegiate athletes varies with practice type, which is currently unregulated by the NCAA. METHODS Over an entire season, a cohort of 20 collegiate football players wore impact-sensing mastoid patches that measured the linear and rotational acceleration of all head impacts during a total of 890 athletic exposures. Data were analyzed to compare the number of head impacts, head impact burden, and average impact severity during helmet-only, shell, and full-pad practices, and games. RESULTS Helmet-only, shell, and full-pad practices and games all significantly differed from each other (p ≤ 0.05) in the mean number of impacts for each event, with the number of impacts being greatest for games, then full-pad practices, then shell practices, and then helmet-only practices. The cumulative distributions for both linear and rotational acceleration differed between all event types (p < 0.01), with the acceleration distribution being similarly greatest for games, then full-pad practices, then shell practices, and then helmet-only practices. For both linear and rotational acceleration, helmet-only practices had a lower average impact severity when compared with other event types (p < 0.001). However, the average impact severity did not differ between any comparisons of shell and full-pad practices, and games. CONCLUSIONS Helmet-only, shell, and full-pad practices, and games result in distinct head impact profiles per event, with each succeeding event type receiving more impacts than the one before. Both the number of head impacts and cumulative impact burden during practice are categorically less than in games. In practice events, the number and cumulative burden of head impacts per event increases with the amount of equipment worn. The average severity of individual impacts is relatively consistent across event types, with the exception of helmet-only practices. The number of hits experienced during each event type is the main driver of event type differences in impact burden per athletic exposure, rather than the average severity of impacts that occur during the event. These findings suggest that regulation of practice equipment could be a fair and effective way to substantially reduce subconcussive head impact in thousands of collegiate football players.

BackgroundFor more than 20 years, the Impact of Event Scale (IES) has been widely used as a measure of stress reactions after traumatic events.AimsTo review studies that evaluated the IES's psychometric properties.MethodLiterature review.ResultsThe results indicated that the IES's two-factor structure is stable over different types of events, that it can discriminate between stress reactions at different times after the event, and that it has convergent validity with observer-diagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder. The use of IES in many psychopharmacological trials and outcome studies is supportive of the measure's clinical relevance.ConclusionsThe IES is a useful measure of stress reactions after a range of traumatic events, and it is valuable for detecting individuals who require treatment.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the residents perceptions of a city based on a medium-scale sporting event, such as tennis Open 500 Valencia, through the identification of groups whose attitude toward this event is similar. After completing the survey, an exploratory factor analysis was performed grouping the 23-item scale in four factors: socio-cultural and sports impact, infrastructure and urban impact, socio- economic impact and impact on the image and promotion. Second, cluster analysis was performed combining hierarchical and non-hierarchical methods, which allowed finding three groups of residents: Favorable, Moderate and Unfavorable. Finally, profile observed characteristics and differences between groups of residents. The results showed that the group of citizens with a favorable attitude towards the event was relatively small compared to the other two groups. Also, statistically significant differences were found in the variables related to the interest in the sport, event attendance, degree of fondness for tennis, supporting the event, the work related to tourism or events and the identification with sports events policy. The results of this study provide useful information for sports event organizers and authorities to understand and better meet the needs and demands of citizens.Key words: medium-scale sporting event, residents’ perceptions, social impact, cluster analysis.

Our society has been rapidly growing its presence on the Web, as a consequence we are digitizing a large collection of our daily happenings. In this scenario, the Web receives virtual occurrences of various events corresponding to their real world occurrences from all around the world. Scale of these events can vary from locally relevant ones up to those that receive global attention. News and social media of current times provide all essential means to reach almost a global diffusion. This big data of complex societal events provide a platform to many research opportunities for analyzing and gaining insights into the state of our society. In this thesis, we investigate a variety of social event impact analytics tasks. Specifically, we address three facets in the context of events and the Web, namely, diffusion of events in foreign languages communities, automated classification of Web contents, and news virality assessment and visualization. We hypothesize that the named entities associated with an event or a Web content carry valuable semantic information, which can be exploited to build accurate prediction models. We have shown with the help of multiple studies that raising Web contents to the entity-level captures their core essence, and thus, provides a variety of benefits in achieving better performance in diverse tasks. We report novel findings over disparate tasks in an attempt to fulfill our overall goal on societal event impact analytics

The papers submitted for this PhD by publication represent research centered on event experiences and their design, management and impact. They are the result of research projects that have produced seven published peer-reviewed papers and one book. The body of work has made an original, significant and sustained contribution towards the development of an emerging field of study in events. The work has made a major contribution towards furthering understanding of the human experience that results from the management of events, their design and their impact. At the heart of this submission is a consideration for how events are experienced and what factors and components contribute to the depth of that experience. The majority of papers analyses and reflects upon the construction of experience settings (their design) and essentially seeks knowledge to identify the variables that shape any experience of events (Ryan, 2012). In doing so the research undertaken has embraced a less restrictive set of methodologies usually afforded by statistical exercises in favour of a more embodied, immersive and participative approach. This has included not only observation and autoethnography, but also reflection on that which has been observed. In turn this reflection and analysis has drawn upon a range of theories and models to advance understanding of the social occasions that we call events where human interactions with the designed programme and environment illicit a range of responses that may culminate in a memorable and unique moment in time. The research therefore touches upon the emotional response to event experiences, the study and interpretation of the meaning of events, and notably their signification to an intended audience. In the course of this research I have evaluated and reflected upon the study and practice of event management across a range of event types and genres. Seeking to initially clarify the role of design in creating event experience led me to questioning the paradigmatic model for event management and resulted in the development of an alternative consideration for event planning and management - Event Experience Design Framework (EEDF). Unlike existing models this places design as the central and pivotal driving force that inhabits all areas of the event management process and upon which all events should then be based. The contribution of this body of work can therefore be summarised as follows: 1. Development of a paradigmatic concept that places design as the central and essential practice that underpins the planned event experience. 2. Theoretical positioning of how designing event experiences impacts on stakeholders 3. Recognition and application of theoretical models and tools relevant to event design and creativity, and further use of conceptual models to analyse experiential outcomes 4. Identification and awareness of the broader socio-cultural impact of planned events This submission provides evidentiary material that I have made a positive and meaningful contribution to raising the profile of events through research, teaching and learning by an acknowledged excellence in events management education and as a recognised (and first) National Teaching Fellow in Events. Furthermore, the submission provides a reflection on this research and development that has enabled me to make such a pivotal contribution to the field. It concludes with an outline of plans for the future.

In this study we examine the stock price response around interim reports and the differ-ence between companies with listed stock options and companies without is measured. The focus of the study is OMX Nordic large cap list during the years 2010 and 2011 which gave us a sample of 1096 interim reports. A conventional event study were per-formed where the abnormal return around the release of the interim report were meas-ured. The abnormal returns were not different from zero at the 95% confidence level for the pre and post-announcement period. Abnormal returns on the event day were differ-ent from zero at the 95% confidence level in all cases and companies with listed stock options had a significantly higher abnormal return. We found a difference around one percent in stock price response between the two types of companies. The size and the systematic risks of the companies had a significant correlation to abnormal returns but none of them fully explained the differences between the two types of firms. Either the option market causes this difference or an untested systematic difference does.

Thesis: M. Eng., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2017.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (pages 59-61).
In strong wind events like tornado and hurricane, significant destruction is caused to buildings due to wind-borne debris, which are usually damaged structural members and components with insufficient attachment. This debris, also referred to as missiles, can penetrate building walls and roofs and jeopardize human life. Because of this, there are standard impact criteria provided by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA-P-320, 2014; FEMA-P-361, 2015) and International Code Council (ICC-500, 2014) that need to be met when designing safe rooms or storm shelters. The national wind institute at Texas Tech University has done extensive impact testing on different types of structural and non-structural components, which are the basis for current design guidelines. This thesis focuses on investigating previously developed methods for evaluating the perforation of concrete and steel targets and selecting the most relevant formulas that can be applied for the design of tornado safe rooms. For cast-in-place(CIP) concrete, precast concrete and concrete masonry units (CMU), the best method to estimate perforation limit is the Central Research Institute of the Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI) Formula. For Steel target, both the Ballistic Research Laboratory (BRL) Formula and the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) give useful estimate for perforation limit. These selected concrete and steel target perforation limit formulas can be used for preliminary design of buildings, to withstand the required impact criteria, giving engineers the flexibility to design structures without depending only on using structural components that have been tested to meet the FEMA criteria.

Nations have always competed vigorously during the bidding process to host mega sporting events. The selection of the host nation is a much anticipated decision that results in the promotion of a country on a global platform. In this paper, I use a market adjusted return (index) model to conduct an event study in order to examine abnormal returns in the stock market surrounding the selection of a nation for the Summer Olympics and the FIFA World Cup. I also focus specifically on the construction and industrial sectors, as well as analyze the impact of selection on the nation emerging as the runner up in the bidding process. The research finds that the outcome of the selection process is partially anticipated by investors, resulting in a market reaction that does not accurately measure the financial impact of hosting the event. As developing nations have demonstrated an increased interest in the hosting of events over the years, this paper also addresses the resulting policy implications, as well as the opportunity cost and the economic effects of crowding out and substitution.

The coherence of individuals? narratives of negative events has been shown to have significant positive effects on a variety of indicators of adaptive functioning (Klein & Boals, 2001; Pennebaker, Mayne, & Francis, 1997). Relatively little is known, however, about the processes through which individuals form coherent narratives of important personal experiences. This research examined the role of familiarity with the event on changes over time in the measures of narrative complexity, coherence and intrusive thoughts. In addition, the relationships among three previously used measures of coherence (a count of words in relevant categories, an overall rating, and a measure of causal connections between clauses) were examined, and the association between each measure and a criterion measure, Story Grammar, was explored. Two groups of 16 children participated in either a familiar event, a soccer tournament, or an unfamiliar event, soccer tryouts for a more competitive leaguer. All participants were interviewed within one week of the event and six weeks after the first interview. In contrast to expectations, familiarity with the event did not result in higher initial levels of coherence, and the coherence of the account of the less familiar event did not increase over time. The alternative measures of coherence were related to Story Grammar as expected, but were not correlated with each other.

Aims: Recent studies have suggested promising health benefits for pro-biotics in humans. Most of these studies focus on the advantages of pro-biotics in relation to immune function, but little has been done to evaluate the impact of pro-biotics on inflammatory response and cardiovascular health. In the present study we investigated the impact of pro-biotic administration on mice prior to and following an acute coronary event. Methods and Results: We compared male mice on high-fat or normal diet that were gavaged for 4 weeks with a B. lactis strain of probiotic or with saline for control. Mice were then subjected to myocardial infarction or sham surgery. Mice administered B. lactis were found to have an attenuated weight gain on both high-fat and normal diet compared to saline controls. Mice treated with B. lactis displayed an infarct area of 10.5±3.0%, which is significantly less (p<0.01) than the infarct area of saline treated mice (29.5±4.7%). Serum glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, C-reactive protein (CRP) and endotoxin levels were measured following surgery and hearts were preserved for histological and molecular analyses. Conclusions: Our data show promising insights to a beneficial role of pro-biotic administration in relation to metabolic changes in mice and the acute inflammatory response.

This thesis investigates the impact of terrorist attacks on equity financial markets. It employs traditional event study approaches to identify and measure stock market reactions to terrorist attacks in New York on September 11, 2001, and subsequent terrorist attacks in Madrid, London and Bali. Three studies are presented. The first study investigates the impact of September 11 on the tenant firms within the World Trade Centre. The second study investigates industry effects following the Madrid and London bombings. The third study undertakes a sensitivity analysis to different event study techniques over the various terrorist attacks. The results from the three studies suggest that equity markets can remain efficient in the wake of terrorist events. Terrorist events can trigger large abnormal movement in both equity prices and volume traded. These price and volume effects are influenced by industry effects. Terrorism has a differential impact on stock markets and industry portfolios within stock markets. The detailed analysis presented in this thesis can be used to exploit that industry effect and can be employed to guide diversification strategies that could minimize terrorist risk through industry diversification. The thesis has also evaluated alternative event study methods and produced a critical analysis of event study methodology. It shows clearly that methodological choices can and do significantly influence results. The thesis contributes to eliminating some uncertainty about the markets response to terrorist events, and identifies opportunities for reducing terrorist risk in stock markets.

For the event organiser, Sabah is one of the states that becomes a focal point. As Sabah is one of the most popular tourist destinations, several large events such as the Sabah Jazz Festival, Pesta Lepa-lepa, Pesta Kaamatan, Pesta Kalimaran, and other festivals have been held. However, COVID 19’s disruptive impacts have had such a significant impact on the event sector. Most of the events are getting cancelled or postponed all over the world. Over the past several months, a significant number of meetings and conferences have been redesigned as virtual events. However, the event industry needs to know the readiness of the public towards the shifting from the physical to the digital. Therefore, the objective of this research is to determine the event audience readiness for digital events. It is important for the event industry to know the readiness and a good online platform in providing a good service to their audience. A quantitative method was used to conduct this study. The main finding will see how far our communities is ready to adapt the new norm. Based on the finding it shows that event audience are willing to adopt the event digitisation, and this is due to the impact of the COVID 19pandemic which was accelerating changes in event audience behaviour. This research will benefit the event organisers and help them prepare strategic plana to cater to the audience needs.

This paper estimates the impact of catastrophic natural disasters on economic growth using an event study methodology on a country panel dataset from 1970 to 2019. The severity of the events is determined by the associated mortality. We find that affected economies which, given the way natural disasters are ranked, comprise mainly developing countries, suffer an average loss between 2.1 and 3.7 percentage points (p.p.). The estimated loss is not offset by above-average growth rates in the disasters aftermath. In contrast, when the severity of the events is determined by physical intensity rather than by mortality, which implies a more balanced estimating sample of developed and developing economies, the estimated effects on growth are negligible. Thus, the negative impacts of natural disasters on economic growth are larger for poorer countries, suggesting that the impact of natural disasters on growth is an economic development issue.

This study investigates the feasibility of using remote sensing data for post-disaster damage assessment. Satellite imagery can be a source of easily available, fast, affordable, and accurate data for assessing disaster impacts. This study focuses on Fiji, its agriculture sector, and the tropical cyclones that have battered the country in recent years. It finds that remote sensing data, when combined with pre-event socioeconomic and demographic information, can improve both nowcasting and post-disaster damage assessments of tropical cyclones on agriculture.

We shed new light on the short-term dynamic effects of cyclones on local economic growth in India. We proxy local GDP growth with night-time light intensity data and construct a cyclone index that varies across months and districts depending on windspeed exposures. Using local projections on highly granular data for the period 1993M1-2011M12, we find that yearly estimations hide large short-term differential impacts and that the negative impact of cyclones is the largest between 4 and 8 months after the event.

The article analyzes the concepts of "good" and "evil" from the point of view of physics. Although the physical concept of “entropy” as a measure of disorder was the first candidate who could serve as the physical basis of these ethical concepts, in fact it is not suitable for this purpose. However, the “entropic potential of the event” Z (T, A) that describes the impact of the event A that occurred in the moment T0 in the system R to the entropy of this system at the future moment T (T > T0) is well suited for our analysis. The article describes methods for calculating the “entropic potential of the event” for certain real-life events and discuss several other related ideas, such as “time factor”, “averaging” and “universality”.

This study combines three rounds of surveys with remote sensing to measure long-term impacts of a randomized irrigation program in the Dominican Republic. Specifically, Landsat 7 and Landsat 8 satellite images are used to measure the causal effects of the program on agricultural productivity, measured through vegetation indices (NDVI and OSAVI). To this end, 377 plots were analyzed (129 treated and 248 controls) for the period from 2011 to 2019. Following a Differencein-Differences (DD) and Event study methodology, the results confirmed that program beneficiaries have higher vegetation indices, and therefore experienced a higher productivity throughout the post-treatment period. Also, there is some evidence of spillover effects to neighboring farmers. Furthermore, the Event Study model shows that productivity impacts are obtained in the third year after the adoption takes place. These findings suggest that adoption of irrigation technologies can be a long and complex process that requires time to generate productivity impacts. In a more general sense, this study reveals the great potential that exists in combining field data with remote sensing information to assess long-term impacts of agricultural programs on agricultural productivity.
