Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) contains a biotic fraction, which is characterized by various microorganisms, including yeasts. The colonization of microorganisms in the freshly produced EVOO is determined by the physicochemical characteristics of the product. The production of blended EVOO with balanced taste, which is obtained by blending several monovarietal EVOOs, modifies the original microbiota of each oil due to the differential physico-chemical characteristics of the blended oil. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of microbial composition on the stability of the quality indices of the monovarietal and blended EVOOs derived from Leccino, Peranzana, Coratina, and Ravece olive varieties after six months of storage. The yeasts survived only in the monovarietal EVOOs during six months of storage. Barnettozyma californica, Candida adriatica, Candida diddensiae, and Yamadazyma terventina were the predominant yeast species, whose abundance varied in the four monovarietal EVOOs. However, the number of yeasts markedly decreased during the first three months of storage in all blended EVOOs. Thus, all blended EVOOs were more stable than the monovarietal EVOOs as the abundance and activity of microorganisms were limited during storage.

This review focuses on the conditions required to increase and maintain the antioxidant nutrients in both extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and table olives (TOs) from the agronomic and technological practices to the gastronomy. The main antioxidants of TOs and EVOO are phenol alcohols and acids, secoiridoids, lignans and flavones, all of which possess the ability to prolong the oil’s shelf-life and exhibit healthy properties for humans. The precise detection of secoiridoid derivatives remains the breakthrough for the nutritional and health quality certification of extra virgin olive oils (EVOOs) required for EFSA health claims. To attain the necessary antioxidant quality in both EVOO and TOs, it is necessary to hard focus on the several steps in the production chain, including olive cultivar, agronomic conditions, harvesting methods, and transformation technology. The quality level is maintained if the storage conditions aim to minimize the oxidative processes that occur due to oxygen and light. In terms of minor polar biophenols, there is disagreement on which between the organic or conventional EVOOs show higher concentration values. The strict disciplinary of production of protected designation EVOOs does not ensure higher phenol values in comparison to the artisanal EVOOs. In gastronomy, the EVOOs are preferable to seed oils, particularly during frying vegetable. The EVOOs show higher heat stability, linked both to the fatty acid composition and the phenol content, that is important for preventing fatty acids oxidation. Concerning TOs, the commercial presentation includes olives and olive paste. Both products show a remarkable loss of natural antioxidants after pasteurization and during storage as the thermal treatment mostly impacts on TOs secoiridoids.

Despite the growing interest in the sensory and healthy properties of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), the topic of oil-food pairing is practically unexplored. This study systematically explores sensory effects on the flavor and harmony obtained by combining two ingredients (EVOOs and vegetables) and aims to provide practical indications for harmonic oil-vegetable combinations. The approach considered an optimal pairing of five EVOOs combined with five typical raw Italian vegetables characterized by different degrees of bitter­ness (Artichoke, Late Treviso radicchio, Chioggia radicchio, rocket, Early Treviso radicchio). An Index of Disharmony was computed for each pairing, using intensity ratings given by a trained panel that described EVOOs, vegetables and pairings. The results suggested a flavor congruency principle to enhance the oil-pairing harmony. EVOOs with intense green and bitter flavor maximise harmony when combined with very bitter or very pungent vegetables. EVOOs with moderate green flavor and bitterness seemed best paired with vegetables with low/intermediate bitterness.

Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is a key component of the Mediterranean diet, with several health benefits derived from its consumption. Moreover, due to its eminent market position, EVOO has been thoroughly studied over the last several years, aiming at its authentication, but also to reveal the chemical profile inherent to its beneficial properties. In the present work, a comparative study was conducted to assess Greek EVOOs’ quality and authentication utilizing different analytical approaches, both targeted and untargeted. 173 monovarietal EVOOs from three emblematic Greek cultivars (Koroneiki, Kolovi and Adramytiani), obtained during the harvesting years of 2018–2020, were analyzed and quantified as per their fatty acids methyl esters (FAMEs) composition via the official method (EEC) No 2568/91, as well as their bioactive content through liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) methodology. In addition to FAMEs analysis, EVOO samples were also analyzed via HRMS-untargeted metabolomics and optical spectroscopy techniques (visible absorption, fluorescence and Raman). The data retrieved from all applied techniques were analyzed with Machine Learning methods for the authentication of the EVOOs’ variety. The models’ predictive performance was calculated through test samples, while for further evaluation 30 commercially available EVOO samples were also examined in terms of variety. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study where different techniques from the fields of standard analysis, spectrometry and optical spectroscopy are applied to the same EVOO samples, providing strong insight into EVOOs chemical profile and a comparative evaluation through the different platforms.

The production of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) in Brazil developed quite recently, and information on commercial Brazilian EVOO’s typical features is very scarce. In just one of the previously published works on Brazilian olive oil, the assessed samples were commercially available. In this study, a comprehensive characterization of EVOO samples acquired at local stores (at Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul, from the two most prevalent cultivars, Arbequina and Koroneiki) was carried out considering the most relevant quality parameters, antioxidant capacity, oxidative stability, total phenolic content, fatty acid composition, and minor component metabolic profiling. The latter included: (1) the determination of individual phenolic compounds (belonging to four diverse chemical classes) and triterpenic acids by means of a powerful multi-class reversed-phase LC-MS method; (2) the quantitative profiling of tocopherols, phytosterols, and pigments by normal-phase LC-DAD/fluorescence; and (3) the quantitative appraisal of the volatile pattern of the oils by solid-phase microextraction (SPME)-gas chromatography (GC)-MS. By applying these methods, the concentrations of approximately 70 minor compounds were determined in commercial EVOOs from Brazil. To the best of our knowledge, the content of a very large number of phenolic compounds of those determined in the current report (mainly secoiridoids), the three triterpenic acids (maslinic, betulinic, and oleanolic acids), and the individual chlorophyll derivatives had not been previously evaluated in Brazilian EVOOs. The present work provides a broad picture of the compositional profile and other parameters of relevance of selected commercial Brazilian EVOOs available on local markets, describing their typicity and most particular features, some of which are known to have potential impacts on consumers’ health.

Spectroscopic non-destructive methods have high potentialities as fast, cheap and easy-to-be-used approaches to address olive oil quality and authenticity. Based on previous research where near-UV Visible spectroscopy was used to investigate extra-virgin olive oils (EVOOs) and their main pigments’ content (i.e., β-carotene, lutein, pheophytin a and pheophytin b), we have implemented the spectral deconvolution method in order to follow the EVOO’s life, from ‘freshly pressed’ to ‘on-the-shelf’ EVOO samples at different storage time. In the first part of the manuscript, the new implemented deconvolution spectroscopic method aimed to quantify two additional pigments, namely chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b, is described and tested on ‘ad hoc’ samples with known concentrations of chlorophylls. The effect of light exposure and acidification was investigated to test the reliability and robustness of the spectral deconvolution. In the second part of the work, this approach was used to study the kinetic of pigments’ degradation in several monocultivar fresh EVOO samples under optimal storage’s conditions. The results here reported show that this spectroscopic deconvolution approach is a good method to study fresh EVOOs too; moreover, the proposed method revealed to be sensitive to detect eventual stresses of olive oil samples stored in not-good conditions.

The potential application of multivariate three-way data analysis techniques, namely parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and discriminant multi-way partial least squares regression (DN-PLSR), on three-dimensional excitation emission matrix (3D-EEM) fluorescent data were used to identify the uniqueness and authenticity of Maltese extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). A non-negativity constrained PARAFAC model revealed that a four-component model provided the most appropriate solution. Examination of the extracted components in mode 2 and 3 showed that these belonged to different fluorophores present in extra virgin olive oil. Application of linear discriminate analysis (LDA) and binary logistic regression analysis on the concentration of the four extracted fluorophores, showed that it is possible to discriminate Maltese EVOOs from non-Maltese EVOOs. The application of DN-PLSR provided superior means for discrimination of Maltese EVOOs. Further inspection of the extracted latent variables and their variable importance plots (VIPs) provided strong proof of the existence of four types of fluorophores present in EVOOs and their potential application for the discrimination of Maltese EVOOs.

During the last few years, the global demand for extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is increased. Olive oil represents a significant percentage of world fat consumption determining an important development of its market. In this context, the problems related to counterfeiting and product fraud is becoming extremely relevant. Thus, the quality and authenticity control of EVOOs is nowadays mandatory. In this study we focused on the use of 1H NMR technique associated with multivariate statistical analysis to characterize Italian EVOOs commercial blends. In particular, a specific database including 126 monocultivar EVOOs reference samples, was used to characterize a total of 241 Italian EVOOs blends over four consecutive harvesting years. Moreover, the effect of the minor components (phenolic compounds) on the qualitative characterization of blended EVOOs was also evaluated. The correlation analysis of classification scores obtained using two pairwise orthogonal partial least square-discriminant analysis models (built with major and combined major–minor components NMR data) revealed that both could be profitably used to generally classify the studied Coratina containing blends.

(1) Background: Extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) is a precious and universally studied food matrix. Recently, the quantitative chemical composition was investigated by an innovative processing method for the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments called Multi-Assignment Recovered Analysis (MARA)-NMR. (2) Methods: Any EVOO 13-carbon NMR (13C-NMR) profile displayed inconsistent signals. This mismatch was resolved by comparing NMR data to the official gas-chromatographic flame ionization detection (GC-FID) experiments: the analyses concerned many EVOOs but also the “exotic” Capparis spinosa oil (CSO). (3) Results: NMR and GC-FID evidenced the overwhelming presence of cis-vaccenic esters in the CSO and, more importantly, cis-vaccenic 13C-NMR resonances unequivocally matched the misunderstood 13C-NMR signals of EVOOs. The updated assignment revealed the unexpected relevant presence of cis-vaccenic ester (around 3%) in EVOOs; it was neglected, so far, because routine and official GC-FID profiles did not resolve oleic and cis-vaccenic signals leading to the total quantification of both monounsaturated fatty esters. (4) Conclusions: The rebuilt MARA-NMR and GC-FID interpretations consistently show a meaningful presence of cis-vaccenic esters in EVOOs, whose content could be a discrimination factor featuring specific cultivar or geographical origin. The study paves the way toward new quantification panels and scientific research concerning vegetable oils.

The determination of the authenticity of extra virgin olive oils (EVOOs) has become more interesting in recent years. Italy is the first country in Europe in terms of number of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) oils, which connects consumers to a feeling of tradition and thus to higher quality standards. This work focused on the consideration of the inorganic content as a possible marker of EVOOs. Ten vegetable oils (VOs), eight Italian EVOOs and seven not Italian EVOOs were analyzed. After pretreatment by acid mineralization, Al, Ba, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, P, Sb, Se and Zn were determined by ICP-OES. The electrochemical properties of a selected group of EVOOs and other vegetal oils of different botanical origin were investigated by voltammetry. Carbon paste electrodes (CPEs) were prepared. The features observed in the voltammograms reflect the reactions of electroactive compounds, which are present in the oils. A chemometric treatment of the results was performed to assess the possibility to distinguish (i) the region of provenience considering the inorganic profile; and (ii) the plant species from which each oil was obtained on the basis of the current profile registered during voltammetric analysis. Inorganic composition seems to be a useful marker for the assessment of the geographical origin of an EVOO. The EVOO-CPEs voltammetry seems to have a good ability to distinguish the plant species of origin. This method could be useful to monitor the conservation status of the oils, as the redox profile is linked to the oxidative degradation state.

La vie artificielle peut etre presentee comme une alternative interessante a l'intelligence artificielle classique. Cette recente discipline apporte en effet un nouveau regard sur les problemes lies a l'adaptation et a l'apprentissage. Cette these propose une contribution a l'un des domaines les plus fascinants de la vie artificielle: la neuroethologie artificielle. Il s'agit de l'etude de modeles neuronaux artificiels sous-jacents au comportement d'agents autonomes. La methodologie evolutionniste evots (evolutionary robots) proposee dans cette these permet de generer de maniere incrementale des architectures neuronales dotant des robots mobiles de comportements reactifs simples, et egalement, dans une certaine mesure, de comportements adaptatifs plus evolues. Cette methodologie est fortement inspiree de la biologie pour chacune de ses composantes. Elle fait intervenir un algorithme genetique operant sur des populations de genotypes de taille variable. Un processus de morphogenese de reseau de neurones (neurogenese), exhibant une dynamique complexe, permet de synthetiser une architecture neuronale a partir de chaque genotype. Ces architectures sont alors evaluees a l'aide d'un simulateur de robot mobile realiste que nous avons developpe. Le concept de metabolisme artificiel introduit dans cette these sert a attribuer une valeur selective a chaque individu afin que l'algorithme genetique puisse operer la selection. Les resultats obtenus, dont certains ont ete transferes avec succes sur un robot reel khepera, sont encourageants et laissent presager de nouveaux developpements prometteurs

Researchers studying the affects of resource loss following a technological disaster have exclusively investigated the acute period directly after the event occurred. This study applied Hobfoll's (1988, 1989) Conservation of Resources model in order to examine the long term effects of resource loss on depression in Cordova, Alaska a decade after the Exxon Valdez Oil spill. Results suggest that resource loss was a more prominent predictor for depression than demographics, involvement in the on-going litigation, or commercial fishing jobs. The research concludes that certain aspects of resource loss are critical in the development of depression after a technological disaster, and in understanding how to address depression in the community.

Résumé : Les maladies cardio-vasculaires (MCV) constituent l'une des principales causes de mortalité et de morbidité dans le monde. De nombreuses études épidémiologiques montrent que les niveaux des lipoprotéines de haute densité (HDL) sont inversement corrélés au risque des MCV. Les propriétés antiathérogènes des HDL sont attribuées, en partie, à l'action de l'enzyme Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) qui leur est associée exclusivement. Le rôle de la PON1 dans l’activité antioxydante des HDL a été largement étudié, alors que le mécanisme par lequel la PON1 exerce ses effets anti-inflammatoires reste à établir. La prévalence accrue des MCV avec l'augmentation de l'âge incite à rechercher certains facteurs qui pourraient expliquer cette tendance. Peu de travaux se sont intéressés à l'impact d'une réduction de la fonctionnalité de HDL dans le développement de l'athérosclérose et encore moins en présence d'un facteur de risque pour les MCV, tel que l'âge. À ce jour, plusieurs travaux ont mis en évidence une diminution de l'activité antioxydante de HDL et de la PON1 chez la personne âgée. Cependant, il n'existe pas de données sur l'effet de la réduction de l'activité de la PON1 sur l'activité anti-inflammatoire des HDL. Nos objectifs sont d'élucider le rôle de la PON1 dans les activités anti-inflammatoires des HDL et de déterminer l'effet de sa modulation sur l'activité athéroprotectrice des HDL chez les personnes âgées. Nos résultats montrent que la PON1 diminue significativement le niveau d'expression des molécules d'adhésion intercellulaire-1 (lCAM-1) au niveau des cellules endothéliales inhibant ainsi l'induction de l'inflammation en présence de phospholipides oxydés. Cette activité anti-inflammatoire de la PON1 est due à la fois à sa capacité de réduire l'oxydation des lipides (effet antioxydant) mais aussi à son activité phospholipase like, hydrolysant ainsi les lipides oxydés. Toutefois, cet effet anti-inflammatoire dépend de son association aux HDL. Nos résultats démontrent ainsi que l'effet anti-inflammatoire des HDL est dû en grande partie à la PON1. Cette activité des HDL diminue significativement au cours du vieillissement. Nos résultats montrent aussi que 12 semaines de consommation d'huile d'olive extra vierge (EVOO) augmentent significativement l'activité anti-inflammatoire des HDL. Cet effet est dû à une augmentation de l'activité de PON1 et d'une réduction du niveau de stress oxydant. Cet effet bénéfique de l'EVOO est plus significatif chez les personnes âgées que chez les personnes jeunes. Conclusions: Nos résultats apportent la démonstration de l'implication de la PON1 dans la régulation des activités antiathérogènes des HDL et proposent des mécanismes de l'implication de la PON1 dans la régulation de cette activité anti-inflammatoire des HDL. Aussi, nos résultats montrent l'importance de la diète de type méditerranéen dans la régulation des fonctions antiathérogènes des HDL, et plus particulièrement, en présence d'un facteur de risque pour les MCV, tel que le vieillissement. // Abstract : Cardiovascular diseases are one of the main causes of mortality and morbidity throughout the world. Several epidemiologic studies show that there is an inverse correlation between the levels of high density lipoproteins (HDL) and cardiovascular risk. The antiatherogenic properties of HDL are due, in part, to paraoxonase 1 (PON1) enzyme, which is associated exclusively to HDL. The role of PON1 in the antioxidant activity of HDL has been widely studied. However, the mechanism by which PON1 exerts its antiinflammatory effect remains to be determined. Increased prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and the increasing life span encourages investigations for certain predisposing factors that could explain this tendency. Few studies have focused on the impact of a reduction of HDL activity within the development of atherosclerosis during the aging process. Nowadays, several studies had demonstrated a reduction in the antioxidant activities of HDL and PON1 in the elderly population. However, there is no data of the effect of aging on the anti-inflamm atory activities of PON 1 and HDL. The main objectives of the present study were to explain the role of the PON1 in the anti-inflammatory properties of the HDL and to determine the effect of the modulation of PON1 activity on the atherprotective effect of HDL in the elderly population. Our results show that PON1 decreased significantly ICAM-1 expression within the endothelial cells, which inhibits the induction of inflammation in the presence of oxidized phospholipids. The anti-inflammatory activity of PON1 is due to its capacity to reduce lipid oxidation (antioxidant effect) and to its phospholipase-like activity, which consists of hydrolyzing oxidized lipids. Our results also show that 12 weeks of extra virgin oil (EVOO) increase significantly the anti-inflammatory activity of HDL. This effect is due principally to an improvement of the activity of PON1 and reduction of oxidative stress status. This beneficial effect of EVOO was more significant in the elderly than in young subjects. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate the role of the PON1 in the regulation of the antiatherogenic activities of HDL and suggest a mechanism for the implication of PON1 in the regulation of the anti-inflammatory activity of HDL. In addition, our results show the importance of the Mediterranean diet in the regulation of antiatherogenic function HDL, and particularly, in the presence of a risk factor for cardiovascular disease such as aging.

The main aim of this work id to provide integral methods to predict and characterize the properties of composite structures based on hybrid polymers and reinforcements, that could lead to useful results from an industrial point of view. This is addressed, if possible, by theoretical predictions of the effective properties by using the available experimental data. The first part is focused on the scientific achievements of the author that allowed a quantitative characterization of the main effective properties of several composite architectures from hybrid polymers and reinforcements, based on bio matrices, tailor-made matrices and different theoretical and simulation methods using computer software to allow good comparison. The second part defines the future research lines to continue this initial investigation. The main objectives are clearly defined to give the reader a sound background with the appropriate concepts that are specifically discussed in the following chapters. As a main objective, this research work makes a first attempt to provide a systematic analysis and prediction of composite hybrid structures.
El objetivo general del trabajo es proporcionar medios integrales para predecir y caracterizar las propiedades de las estructuras de compuestos basados en polímeros y refuerzos híbridos, principales que pueden producir resultados de utilidad práctica simultáneamente. Esto se logra comparando, siempre que sea posible, las predicciones teóricas de las propiedades efectivas con los datos experimentales disponibles. Una primera parte se ocupa de los logros científicos del autor que permitieron caracterizar cuantitativamente las principales propiedades efectivas de las arquitecturas de compuestos basados en polímeros y refuerzos híbridos, basados en matrices bio, auto-desarrollados y diferentes métodos teóricos y de simulación por ordenador utilizados para la comparación. La segunda parte identifica las orientaciones futuras para la evolución y desarrollo de la ciencia y la investigación. The issue of food traceability is one that affects a great number of sectors and policy areas. Within the EU, there is increasing demand from consumers, businesses and institutions to have more direct access to information about how food is produced, transformed, and distributed. Currently, however, practices in the industry are very much open to human error. Databases are highly vulnerable to inaccuracies and hacking, as well as deliberate faults caused by corruption or fraudulent conduct. With food traceability being so closely related to trade and public health issues, there is arguably increasing incentive for the EU to seek alternative tools to increase transparency and accountability throughout supply chains. Consequently, this paper will examine a possible alternative to current practices by evaluating the applicability of 'blockchain' technology, namely a system of digitised, decentralised ledgers, which could allow key stakeholders to access information about the provenance of food immediately, comprehensively and securely. The analysis will focus specifically on Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO), one of the most adulterated products in the food industry, identifying gaps and opportunities in current traceability systems. The research question tackled in this paper, therefore, may be formulated as follows: how and to what extent could blockchain technology constitute a sustainable solution for improving the traceability of EVOO within the EU? The paper begins with a brief overview of the issue and an explanation of the research methodology used, followed by an elaboration of key terms and concepts and a detailed explanation of the principles underlying blockchain technology. Subsequently, the key challenges and opportunities associated with blockchain-based traceability systems are examined through a case study, followed by an analysis aimed at assessing the sustainability of blockchain solutions for the EVOO sector. The conclusion, lastly, provides an overview of relevant findings and proposes a final assessment.

Il seguente elaborato ha l'obiettivo di introdurre il concetto di sostanze fenoliche, riportando le principali caratteristiche chimiche e la loro classificazione, per poi analizzare le vie biosintetiche di suddette molecole nelle foglie e nel frutto dell'Olea europaea. Sono riportati, inoltre, gli aspetti agronomici che influenzano il contenuto fenolico dell'oliva e, in seguito, le principali caratteristiche delle olive da tavola e i processi di deamarizzazione ad esse applicate. L'attenzione è poi rivolta al profilo fenolico dell'olio vergine di oliva, alle modificazione chimico-enzimatiche che avvengono durante le fasi del processo tecnologico, nonché ai principali sottoprodotti dell'industria olearia (foglie di ulivo, acque di vegetazione, sansa di oliva), evidenziando la presenza di sostanze fenoliche e le possibili strategie di recupero e di valorizzazione di tali composti. Sono, inoltre, analizzate le proprietà antiossidanti, sensoriali, salutistiche, antimicrobiche ed antivirali esplicate da suddette molecole fenoliche. Infine, viene introdotta la nozione di Health Claim in merito al consumo di olio EVO, definendo le modalità di autorizzazione dell'EFSA e il Regolamento EU n° 432/2012.

La direction artistique de l’Académie de France à Rome et de ses pensionnaires est placée sous le patronage de l’Académie des beaux-arts. Elle détermine et réglemente les conditions de séjour et le programme des travaux annuels, les envois de Rome. Ce privilège est interrompu le 13 novembre 1863 par un décret qui lui retire sa tutelle pour la confier à l’Etat. Cette rupture est révélatrice d’une crise majeure de l’enseignement des beaux-arts en France et bien que l’Académie récupère la totalité de ses prérogatives huit ans plus tard, elle devra désormais composer avec les exigences que l’époque lui imposera, entre tradition et modernité. C’est dans cette perspective que vienne s’inscrire les pensionnaires peintres et leurs envois de Rome. Tributaires d’un enseignement et d’un système académique des beaux-arts, les lauréats des grands prix de Rome de peinture sont le symbole de la tradition. The authentication of extra virgin olive oils (EVOOs) is of importance due to the potential economic impacts on the global market when olive oils are diluted with other edible oils. The International Olive Council stipulates a wide range of methods to authenticate EVOOs, however, these methods are subject to limitations. This research addresses certain weaknesses associated with these methods such as the analysis time, consistency and reliability of the official methods. A series of techniques and EVOO chemical parameters that could be used to supplement current authentication techniques was investigated. In particular, the "quality" parameters comprising total phenolic content, antioxidant capacity and tocopherol composition of Australian EVOOs diluted with canola, sunflower and rice bran oil were investigated along with the study of the UV and fluorescent spectra of these mixtures. A framework was developed which combines the strengths of the tests methods to propose a scheme to identify an adulterated EVOO. The total phenolic content measured by the Folin-Ciocalteu assay provides a positive test for the presence of a diluent at concentrations of >5% w/w but is unable to identify the diluent and is non-linear with concentration. The total phenolic content as determined by high-performance liquid chromatography using a diode-array detector that has a similar detection limit to the Folin-Ciocalteu assay and is unable to identify the diluent but provides better linearity at diluent concentrations of >10% w/w. The antioxidant capacity of diluted EVOOs using the radical 2,2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) is only suitable for rice bran or canola oil diluents at 10% w/w and 20% w/w, respectively but in certain cases can identify the diluent oil in the mixture. A novel technique in which the UV and fluorescent profiles of the EVOOs mixtures were determined and provided a rapid, non-destructive analysis of the EVOOs. Concurrent scans of both the excitation and emission spectra between 250 and 800 nm enabled the unique identification of EVOOs, canola, sunflower and rice bran oils Furthermore, selected excitation wavelengths of 328 nm and 536 nm were used to identify EVOO that was diluted with 5% w/w sunflower oil. The total tocopherol concentration can be used to identify 10% w/w mixtures of sunflower and canola oil in EVOO however this parameter is not suitable to identify the presence of rice bran oil. Nonetheless, a strong correlation was found between the compositional changes to α- and γ-tocopherol upon dilution which enabled the detection of diluted EVOOs, and these tocopherol concentrations were found to offer a unique profile for all three diluent oils. For example, a γ-tocopherol concentration exceeding 10 mg kg-1 suggests the EVOO is diluted with canola or rice bran oil at a concentration of 5% w/w or 10% w/w, respectively. An α-tocopherol concentration exceeding 178 mg kg-1 suggests the EVOO is diluted with sunflower oil at a concentration between 5-10% w/w depending on the EVOO. Overall, the α- and γ-tocopherol profiles were used to develop a decision tree framework to identify and quantitate the diluent oil. In combination, the above traditional methods used with the novel techniques and the assessment framework developed in this work enable a more robust assessment to be made of the authenticity of EVOOs in the future.

AbstractTo validate the predictive capability of ERA Acute, a study was carried out using data from two well-studied historic oil spills, the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill (EVOS) and the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill (DHOS) incidents. Results from the case studies with ERA Acute were compared to the impact estimates and recovery observations that have been reported in the extensive research following the two incidents. Resource data relevant for each of the two incidents were reconstructed within the analysis area. Performance boundaries were set up for evaluating the ERA Acute results, based on the ranges of the impact and recovery estimates reported in the post-spill assessments. Validation of an oil spill ERA model against post-spill assessments of historic spills is a challenging exercise due to scientific limitations of both. ERA Acute performed satisfactorily compared to the performance boundaries and the study gave useful insight into the predictive capabilities of ERA Acute. The results from the study were used to evaluate between two different impact models and to increase the individual vulnerability of cetaceans.

Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is a high value commodity that might be subject of various fraudulent practices. One of them, addition of lower grade, soft-deodorized olive oil to EVOO has recently become of concern, as such adulterant detection is not an easy task. In this study, aqueous methanolic extracts of a unique set of authentic EVOOs, soft-deodorized oils and their admixtures obtained within the OLEUM EU project (http://www.oleumproject.eu/) were investigated. Using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF-HRMS/MS) for metabolomic fingerprinting, followed by  multi-dimensional chemometric evaluation, ´marker ions´ were recognized. Some molecules identified, whose etiology must be investigated, were: the methyl ester of hydroxy octadecenoic acid and a ester derivative of oleic acid. As far as these markers can be confirmed as diagnostic, detection of soft-deodorized olive oil addition can be enabled through a simpler and highly sensitive target analysis employing high performance liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-QqQ-MS/MS).
