This study examined the histopathological alterations in the gills, fillet and liver of Hemichromis fasciatus in Igun reservoir (located in an abandoned goldmine area) compared to those of Opa reservoir. Life fish species were collected from Opa and Igun reservoirs and identified in the laboratory. Techniques based on histological analyses were done on the organs and photomicrographs taken using digital binocular compound LED microscope. Epithelial lifting and hypertrophy of lamellae were observed in the gills of H. fasciatus in Opa reservoir and compared to rupture of gill epithelium, rupture of chloride cell, fusion, hyperplasia, curling of lamellae in H. fasciatus of Igun reservoir. The fillet of H. fasciatusin Opa and Igun reservoirs revealed splitting and atrophy of muscle bundles. Also, parasite cyst and necrosis were observed in the fillet of H. fasciatus of Igun reservoir compared to degeneration in muscle bundles in the fish of Opa reservoir. Similarly, the liver of H. fasciatus in Igun and Opa reservoirs showed splitting at the wall of central vein, hepatopancreas and liver cells degeneration. Moreover, nucleus hypertrophy was also identified in the liver of H. fasciatus in Opa reservoir compared to vascular congestion in the central vein, bile duct, portal vein and portal artery of H. fasciatus in Igun reservoir. The study therefore concluded that H. fasciatus specimens in Igun reservoir were histopathologically unhealthy as compared with those of Opa reservoir probably due to the high level of pollution resulting in bioaccumulation of heavy metals in Igun reservoir samples. Rivers in the KPK Peshawar region of Pak are subjected to a variety of anthropogenic impacts, Agricultural operations, industry, and urban garbage are all examples. The purpose of The goal of this research was to find out the degree of water contamination by showing a testing that includes in situ bio-monitoring of water constituents on Geno-toxicity in local fish species. Three places in the region were tested for Geno-toxicity using the micronucleus test. At sample locations like the urban perimeter, farmland, and the fertiliser industry, it was interesting to observe if there were any differences between monitored species control and such Characidium fasciatum, Astyanax fasciatus, Astyanax altiparanae. Records showed that the species from sites one, Two, and Three had a considerably greater frequency of Micronucleus when compared to fish from site Four. The frequency of Micronucleus was substantially higher in and A. altiparanae and A. fasciatus erythrocytes at sites one and two. Micronucleus frequencies were higher at site three in C. fasciatum. Micronucleus induction in C. fasciatum was associated to Cr levels in water and sediment, whereas A. altiparanae and A. fasciatum were linked to zinc levels in water and sediment. Lycodon gongshanVogel and Luo, 2011 is a newly described snake species that is endemic to southwestern China. Based on two mtDNA gene fragments and two nuclear genes, a molecular phylogeny for the genusLycodonwas reconstructed and the systematic position ofL. gongshanwas evaluated. The results revealed thatL. gongshanformed a strongly supported monophyletic clade withL. fasciatus, and (L. cavernicolus +L. butleri), although the relationships among them were unresolved. The close genetic relationship betweenL. gongshanandL. fasciatusis consistent with hypotheses based on morphological data. Additionally two specimens from Guangdong, previously identified asL. fasciatus, showed a sister relationship withL. liuchengchaoiwith low genetic difference, indicating that the two specimens were misidentified, and illustrating thatL. liuchengchaoimay have much broader distribution than previous thought.

Malate dehydrogenase (MDH) electrophoretic mobility patterns were used as a standard against which field methods involving anal fin ray counts (AFCs) and extrinsic gasbladder muscle (EGM) rib passage patterns were compared to separate the beaked redfish species, Sebastes fasciatus and S. mentella. The frequencies of MDH-A phenotypes were determined for 1125 beaked redfish examined from a winter survey in 1983 and 376 from a summer survey in 1984. Allele frequencies were calculated from the MDH-A phenotypic data for the winter survey. The low mobility of the A2 phenotype was characteristic of 90% of S. fasciatus sampled at depths < 320 m in winter and at depths < 250 m in summer. The high-mobility A1 and heterozygotic A1/A2 phenotypes were prevalent in 95% of S. mentella sampled below these depths. The mobility patterns agreed with predominant AFCs ([Formula: see text] for S. fasciatu[Formula: see text] for S. mentella) for all stations in the deep and shallow zones. The MDH mobility patterns showed 93% agreement with EGM patterns for S. fasciatus but only 53% agreement for S. mentella. An overlap of AFCs, of main EGM patterns, and of tendon to vertebrae attachments and the variation from set to set in A1/A2 heterozygotic phenotypes suggest that these species hybridize in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

In this study, a comparison of the concentrations of eight heavy metals (including Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cr, As, Cd, and Hg) was conducted between wild and cultured Oplegnathus fasciatus. Significant differences in the concentrations of Zn, Cd, As, and Hg were observed between wild and cultured Oplegnathus fasciatus. The results showed that the mean Zn concentration was significantly higher in cultured Oplegnathus fasciatus (3.051 ± 0.738 mg/kg) when compared to its wild counterpart (2.512 ± 0.407 mg/kg). In contrast, the mean Cd concentration was found to be lower in the cultured Oplegnathus fasciatus (0.001 ± 0.0007 mg/kg) than in the wild ones (0.003 ± 0.003 mg/kg). Likewise, the wild samples demonstrated a higher mean As concentration (1.494 ± 0.659 mg/kg) than the cultured samples (0.594 ± 0.215 mg/kg). Lastly, it was noted that the mean Hg concentration was considerably higher in the cultured Oplegnathus fasciatus (0.042 ± 0.016 mg/kg) than in the wild specimens (0.014 ± 0.011 mg/kg). Pollution levels and health risks were evaluated using the single-factor pollution index (SFI), metal pollution index (MPI), and health risk assessment methods. The results showed that, for Cu, Zn, Cr, and Cd, both wild and cultured Oplegnathus fasciatus had SFI values below 1 compared to the marine organism quality standards. The MPI values for wild and cultured Oplegnathus fasciatus were 0.188 ± 0.051 and 0.172 ± 0.054, respectively, both far below the safety limit of 2 for pollution-free aquatic products. The Hazard Index (HI) for wild and cultured Oplegnathus fasciatus were below 1, indicating no health risks from long-term consumption. A discriminant analysis, based on Zn, Cd, As, and Hg concentrations, distinguished wild from cultured Oplegnathus fasciatus with a 96.0% accuracy, remaining stable at over 94.9% upon cross-validation. These findings accurately evaluate that there is no risk to human health from consuming Oplegnathus fasciatus, which is significant in safeguarding public health.

The geoecological situation in the natura-technical geoecosystems of Baikal Asia is complicated by the invasion of alien species. Information about the Baikal endemic amphipod Gmelinoides fasciatus that penetrated into the cooling reservoir of the Chita TPP-1 is insufficient to assess the current geoecological situation in the benthic subsystem of the cooling reservoir. The purpose of our research of the study was to identify the geoecological features and functions of Gm. fasciatus affecting the geoecological situation in the benthic subsystem of the Chita TPP-1 cooling reservoir. In 2022–2023 the Gm. fasciatus distribution, size structure of the population and elemental composition have been studied in Kenon Lake. It is established that Gm. fasciatus has settled the coastal zone of the lake, the size and structure of the population indicate its stability. The P content in the crude mass of Gm. fasciatus in the lake is 29.7 kg, Ca — 444 kg, Cu — 0.28 kg. Due to the Gm. fasciatus invasion in Kenon Lake, in the monitoring and management system of the cooling reservoir, it is now possible to use a new indicator of the state of the bottom subsystem. Invasion of the amphipod Gm. fasciatus entailed a change in the geoecological situation in the cooling reservoir of Chita TPP-1 — Kenon Lake.

Five numbats (Myrmecobius fasciatus) were transferred into the Arid Recovery Reserve in November 2005 as part of a trial to investigate the suitability of the reserve for a full-scale reintroduction of M. fasciatus. Mean home ranges in this study were 67 ha in summer and 25 ha in autumn/winter. This is similar to home ranges of M. fasciatus at other locations. M. fasciatus used burrows despite available log habitat and were active in air temperatures of 21−30°C and soil temperatures of 21−42°C during the autumn/winter period. M. fasciatus used ‘mulga’, ‘sanddune vegetation’, ‘bullock bush’ and ‘cypress pine’ more often than ‘saltbush/bluebush’ and other available habitats. They were also found more extensively on ‘dunes’ or ‘sand plain’ landforms than on ‘swales’. Two males were still alive 18 months after release; the other three were taken by an unknown bird of prey. We suggest that another trial be undertaken with a larger sample size to determine whether females are able to wean young and whether Arid Recovery is able to sustain a viable population of M. fasciatus.

The banded hare-wallaby (Lagostrophus fasciatus) is an endangered macropodid currently restricted to Bernier and Dorre Islands in Shark Bay, Western Australia. Historically, L. fasciatus was also recorded on the Australian mainland from far western Australia, where it became locally extinct early in the twentieth century. Here we discuss an overlooked museum specimen of L. fasciatus collected in the mid-nineteenth century near Adelaide, South Australia. This specimen considerably extends the known historical distribution of L. fasciatus, validates anecdotal reports of the species from South Australia made by early Australian naturalists, and forms the basis for our description of a new subspecies.

In recent years, probiotics have received considerable attention for improving the health of aquaculture organisms, such as fish and shrimp, by stimulating immune activity and increasing growth rates. Oplegnathus fasciatus is a common and economically important cultured fish species in Asia. In this study, we aimed to investigate the potential of lactic acid bacteria (LAB; Limosilactobacillus reuteri)-fermented feed to promote growth and enhance immune function in O. fasciatus. The feed contained the highest proportion of LAB after L. reuteri fermentation for 3 days in anaerobic conditions. Oplegnathus fasciatus was fed LAB-fermented feed for 30 days. The administration of LAB-fermented feed (live bacteria > 109 CFU/g) significantly increased the growth rate (weight gain = 174.8%; FCR = 4.23) and intestinal probiotic levels of O. fasciatus. After LAB-fermented feeding, the immunity index was evaluated by superoxide anion production, the phagocytic activity of leukocytes, and bactericidal and lysozyme activities in the serum of O. fasciatus. We found that LAB-fermented feed treatment potentially elevated the proportions of intestinal Bifidobacterium, Blautia, and Dorea species and reduced pathogenic bacterial growth (Acinetobacter, Escherichia_Shigella, and Megasphaera) in O. fasciatus. This study demonstrated that LAB-fermented feed containing extracellular vesicles improves growth performance and the inhibition of pathogenic Acinetobacter baumannii.

Based on a revision of historical and taxonomic accounts, we showed that Felis fasciatus Larrañaga, 1923, represents the oldest available Linnean name referable to the pampas cat endemic to the Uruguayan Savannah ecoregion, currently regarded as Leopardus munoai (Ximénez 1961). To anchor the name Felis fasciatus to Uruguayan specimens, we designated a neotype for this taxon with terra typica in Estancia San Cristóbal, Arroyo Limetas, Conchillas, Department of Colonia, Uruguay. Since Larrañaga's fasciatus represents a senior synonym of L. munoai, it takes precedence and, in compliance with the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, it must therefore be used to refer to the "Uruguayan" pampas cat, L. fasciatus (Larrañaga 1923), for which we suggested the vernacular name "Larrañaga’s pampas cat".

Nemacheilus fasciatus is an Indonesian freshwater fish species that can be found in river waters on Java. This fish has a morphological similarity between species. This study aims to identify species of samples found and know their genetic kinship. This study used the Cytochrome Oxidase subunit I (COI) gene as a molecular marker, and then the results were analyzed using MEGA X software. The genetic structure and phylogeny of N. fasciatus sequences were combined with outgroup species from GenBank and analyzed using Maximum Likehood (ML), Pairwise Genetic Distance and Bootstrapping Phylogeny Model of Kimura 2 Parameters. The results showed that the primary pairs of LCO1490 and HCO2198 used to amplify the sample N. fasciatus with COI as a marker. The nucleotide frequencies of these loaches are A=26.5%, T=23.8%, C=19.9% and G=29.9%. The estimated Transition/Transversion bias (R) is 0.60. The number of haplotype diversity (Hd) was 0.972, and nucleotide (Pi) diversity was 0.05115. The kinship of N. fasciatus compared to the outgroup is closer to N. pallidus than N. chrysolaimos. Research needs to be conducted with a larger sample size for the genetic diversity of N. fasciatus in Indonesia.

Dendrorchis retrobiloba Volonterio & Ponce de León, 2005 was first described from the swim bladder of Astyanax fasciatus (Cuvier, 1819) from Montevideo, Uruguay. In this study, we necropsied specimens of A. aff. fasciatus collected from Lake Guaíba, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, for the analysis of their helminths. The digeneans were identified as D. retrobiloba by their elongated body, oral sucker longer than ventral sucker, and 2 posterior lobes. This is the first report of D. retrobiloba in A. aff. fasciatus from Lake Guaíba and extends the known geographic distribution of this parasite.

The current research reports the length-weight relationships (LWRs) and Fulton’s condition factor (K) of three grouper species, namely: areolate grouper (Epinephelus areolatus), blacktip grouper (Epinephelus fasciatus), and honeycomb grouper (Epinephelus merra) harvested in the northern coast of Aceh, Indonesia. The fish samples were gathered from Pelabuhan Perikanan Samudera (PPS) Lampulo, Kuta Alam District, Banda Aceh, Aceh from June - December 2020. In total, 571 grouper specimens were collected during the study period (186 of E. areolatus, 205 specimens of E. fasciatus, and 180 E. merra). The total length (TL) of each fish species ranged from: 125.9-302.5 mm (mean 222.5 ± 30.3) (E. areolatus), 113.3-268.6 mm (mean 196.6 ± 26.9) (E. fasciatus) and 111.1-215.4 mm (mean 162.9 ± 21.7) (E. merra) with weight (W): 25.5-367.6 g (mean 145.8 ± 64.6) (E. areolatus), 24.0-290.9 g (mean 130.3 ± 56.2) (E. fasciatus) and 24.0-290.9 g (mean 130.3 ± 56.2) (E. fasciatus). In addition, the observed Fulton (K) condition factor and Ws values for all the three species were above 100 and 1. Furthermore, the LWRs analysis results revealed that all three fish species showed the b value of 3.0548 (r2=0.97), 3.0466 (r2=0.94) and 3.1681 (r2=0.97) for E. areolatus, E. fasciatus and E. merra, respectively, indicating that the three observed fish species had a positive allometric growth pattern and had a solid relationship between body weight and total length. This study delivers a reference point of several biological characteristics of the observed grouper species that will benefit and improve the fisheries management in the region.

The main of this study was to compare the diet of Hemichromis fasciatus (Perciformes, Cichlidae) and Heterotis niloticus (Osteoglossiformes, Arapaimidae) in Lake Ehuikro (Bongouanou, Ivory Coast). Ffish were caught using gillnets between July 2017 and June 2018. A total of 206 stomachs of H. fasciatus and 71 stomachs of H. niloticus were examined and the relative importance index (RI) was used to analyze the importance of different items. Results indicate that both species are omnivorous tending towards insectivorous with a predominance of Chaoboridae. Despite the overlap obtained in diet of both species (Cλ = 0.89), the ecological niche was small and wide in H. fasciatus and H. niloticus, respectively. Dietary variations indicated ontogenic changes in the first specie and seasonal changes in the second specie. Proportion of mineral fraction observed in stomach contents suggests pelagic feeding behavior in H. fasciatus and benthic behavior in H. niloticus. Keywords: Diet, fish, omnivorous, insectivorous, ecological niche.

There is a strong correlation between the structure of the mammalian kidney and its urinary concentrating ability. We examine here the kidney of an endangered termitivorous marsupial (Myrmecobius fasciatus) and use the measured kidney morphometrics to calculate maximal urinary concentration. The relative medullary area (1.34) of the kidney of M. fasciatus is typical of other dasyuromorph marsupials, as is its predicted maximal urinary concentration of 3617 mOsm kg–1 H2O, despite its historically semiarid/arid distribution. The termitivorous diet of M. fasciatus presumably provides it with sufficient water to limit selection for a high urinary concentrating capacity.

The modern distribution of invasive amphipods of Baikal ( Gmelinoides fasciatus (Stebbing, 1899) , Micruropus possolskii Sowinsky, 1915) and Ponto-Caspian origin ( Pontogammarus robustoides Sars, 1894 , Chelicorophium curvispinum (Sars, 1895)) in Lake Ladoga was shown. The heterogeneity of the distribution of quantitative indicators of amphipods in different parts of the lake was established. The most widespread species in the littoral zone was G. fasciatus . A decrease in the contribution of G. fasciatus in the bottom communities of macrozoobenthos was noted. The dominant role of G. fasciatus was observed only in those parts of the lake where other species of invasive amphipods did not penetrated yet. The habitat of Ponto-Caspian amphipods is limited by the boundaries of the Volkhov Bay. A significant increase in the quantitative development of P. robustoides and active dispersal of M. possolskii to the South along the west coast of the lake indicate the ongoing structural restructuring of littoral biocenoses.

The summarized literature and our own data on spread of the invasive species Gmelinoides fasciatus (Stebbing, 1899) (Crustacea: Amphipoda) in water bodies of northwestern Russia, as well as the chronology of its introduction and invasive corridors for the past 60 years (1962–2022) are presented. G. fasciatus began to settle upstream and downstream along the river system after its intentional introduction into the Gorky Reservoir and water bodies of Leningrad Oblast to increase food supply for fish. Currently, this amphipod is recorded in the littoral zone of the largest water bodies of Europe (lakes Ladoga and Onega) and in the easternmost part of the Gulf of Finland. The obtained scenario of G. fasciatus invasion can be used in predicting dispersion of another Baikal invader (Micruropus possolskii Sowinsky, 1915), which actively colonizes the shallow areas in the southwestern part of Lake Ladoga and is able to expand its habitat under favorable temperature and hydrochemical conditions.

The Pacific iguanas of the Fijian and Tongan archipelagos are a biogeographic enigma in that their closest relatives are found only in the New World. They currently comprise two genera and four species of extinct and extant taxa. The two extant species, Brachylophus fasciatus from Fiji, Tonga, and Vanuatu and Brachylophus vitiensis from western Fiji, are of considerable conservation concern with B. vitiensis listed as critically endangered. A recent molecular study has shown that Brachylophus comprised three evolutionarily significant units. To test these conclusions and to reevaluate the phylogenetic and biogeographic relationships within Brachylophus , we generated an mtDNA dataset consisting of 1462 base pairs for 61 individuals from 13 islands, representing both Brachylophus species. Unweighted parsimony analyses and Bayesian analyses produced a well-resolved phylogenetic hypothesis supported by high bootstrap values and posterior probabilities within Brachylophus . Our data reject the monophyly of specimens previously believed to comprise B. fasciatus . Instead, our data demonstrate that living Brachylophus comprise three robust and well-supported clades that do not correspond to current taxonomy. One of these clades comprises B. fasciatus from the Lau group of Fiji and Tonga (type locality for B. fasciatus ), while a second comprises putative B. fasciatus from the central regions of Fiji, which we refer to here as B . n. sp. Animals in this clade form the sister group to B. vitiensis rather than other B. fasciatus . We herein describe this clade as a new species of Brachylophus based on molecular and morphological data. With only one exception, every island is home to one or more unique haplotypes. We discuss alternative biogeographic hypotheses to explain their distribution in the Pacific and the difficulties of distinguishing these. Together, our molecular and taxonomic results have important implications for future conservation initiatives for the Pacific iguanas.

This study assessed the helminth fauna of Astyanax fasciatus in two distinct sites of the Taquari River, São Paulo State, with 30 individuals sampled in a lotic site and 30 in a lentic site, recording the monogeneans: Cacatuocotyle paranaensis, Characithecium costaricensis, Diaphorocleidus kabatai, Jainus sp., Notozothecium sp. and Gyrodactylus sp., the digenean Antorchis lintoni and no-identified metacercariae; the nematode Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) inopinatus and no-identified larvae. The mean abundances of total monogeneans (U = 1053; p = 0.042) and C. costaricensis (U = 1107; p = 0.005) were higher in the lotic site. This difference may be due to the higher density of the host population in the lotic site, and the water transparence in lentic environments that prevents A. fasciatus to form shoals, precluding the exchange of parasites with direct cycle within a host population. This study is the first report of the helminth fauna of A. fasciatus in the Taquari River, with ten taxa recorded, and reports A. fasciatus as a new host for Notozothecium sp. and C. paranaensis.

The Eurasian amphipod Echinogammarus ischnus is reportedly replacing the common native amphipod Gammarus fasciatus in the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence River system. A potential mechanism for this replacement is competition mediated by resident species. Other Eurasian invaders, dreissenid mussels (Dreissena polymorpha and Dreissena bugensis), dominate rocky substrates throughout the system and might be promoting the rapid expansion of E. ischnus by providing habitat and refugia from predation. Using an in-situ predator-exclusion experiment, we tested the hypothesis that E. ischnus is better able than G. fasciatus to use Dreissena spp. colonies as refugia and thus is less susceptible to predators in the St. Lawrence River. Co-occurring E. ischnus and G. fasciatus showed similar increases in density in the presence of Dreissena spp., in spite of E. ischnus having evolutionary experience with Dreissena spp. Predators reduced the density of both amphipod species, but E. ischnus was more susceptible to predation on dreissenid substrates, which suggests that predation mediates the coexistence of G. fasciatus and E. ischnus in the river.

We examined phylogenetic relationships within the genus Brachylophus, which comprises two endangered iguana species endemic to the South Pacific islands of Fiji and Tonga. Genetic variation among Fijian Crested Iguanas B. vitiensis and Fijian and Tongan Banded Iguanas B. fasciatus was analysed using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) cytochrome b (cyt b) characterized from 35 individuals from island populations. Three distinct clades of Brachylophus were identified. The most divergent clade comprised B. fasciatus from Tonga, which supports the recognition of Tongan iguanas as a separate species. Molecular clock estimates suggested that the average sequence divergence (6.4%) between Tongan and Fijian B. fasciatus clades equated to 7 - 15.8 MY of separation, confirming that extant Brachylophus species have a long history of evolution in situ in the Fijian and Tongan archipelago. Phylogenetic analyses also revealed that Fijian B. fasciatus and B. vitiensis iguana populations were not reciprocally monophyletic. One clade comprised two mtDNA haplotypes from the Fijian islands of Monu, Monuriki, Devuilau, Waya and Yadua Taba. The other clade comprised B. fasciatus haplotypes from Kadavu and Gau, which was divergent from both the aforementioned Fijian clade (dA = 3.5%), and the Tongan clade (dA = 6.4%). In addition to mtDNA data, variation was assessed at microsatellite loci, and significant differentiation between iguana populations was detected. Based on both mtDNA and microsatellite analysis, the conservation priorities for these endangered lizards must be reassessed to protect iguanas as three distinct evolutionarily significant units.

Background: Heat shock proteins (HSPs) play crucial roles in response to temperature changes and biotic stresses. However, the HSP gene family in the pufferfish (Takifugu fasciatus) herring has not been comprehensively investigated. Methods and Results: This study presents a systematic analysis of the HSP70 and HSP90 gene families in T. fasciatus, focusing on gene characterization, conserved structural domains, molecular evolutionary history, and expression patterns of the HSP gene family under stress conditions. The findings reveal that 16 HSP genes are evolutionarily conserved, while hspa4 and hsp90aa appear specific to teleost fish. HSP genes exhibit widespread expression across 11 examined tissues, with most demonstrating high expression levels in the heart, brain, and liver. Furthermore, T. fasciatus was subjected to cryogenic and biotic stresses, revealing distinct expression patterns of HSPs under various stress conditions. The response of HSPs to cold stress and Aeromonas hydrophila infection was sustained. In contrast, gene expression of HSPs significantly changed only in the pre-infection period following Ichthyophthirius multifiliis infection, gradually returning to normal levels in the later stages. Conclusions: These experimental results provide a foundation for further in-depth investigations into the characteristics and functions of HSPs in T. fasciatus.

The structure of the pectoral fin, its girdle and osteological details of the axial skeleton and a skeleton of the caudal fin, including the structure of unpaired fins were studied in three species of three genera of the family Cottidae: the genus Cottus: European species C. koshewnikowi Gratzianov, 1907 and two species of Fareastern monotypic genera: Trachidermus fasciatus Heckel, 1837 and Mesocottus haitej (Dybowsky, 1869). The species well differ in structure of the pectoral girdles and pleural ribs. Mesocottus haitej is characterized by absence of the interradial and coracoid fenestrae and by considerable reduction of pleural ribs in the abdomen part of the vertebral column. Сottus koshewnikowi and T. fasciatus have backwardly directed pleural ribs (3 pairs of ribs in M. haitej). Trachidermus fasciatus is characterized with the most number of plesiomorphic features: the presence of branched rays in the pectoral fin, greater numbers of vertebrae, rays in the second dorsal, anal and pectoral fins, big anteanal distance and by number of preural vertebrae, supporting the procurrent rays. In C. koshewnikowi, the first dorsal fin occupies the most anterior position: aID 32.6–38.0% SL vs 35.7–38.7% SL in T. fasciatus and 36.4–40.8% SL in M. haitej.

This study investigates the parasitic biodiversity of the fish species Astyanax bimaculatus and Psalidodon fasciatus in a stream located in the Chapada do Araripe Environmental Protection Area (APA), state of Ceará, Brazil, contributing to the understanding of parasitic fauna diversity of freshwater fish in neotropics. In total, 292 fish specimens were collected and analyzed, identifying 13 parasite taxa in A. bimaculatus and 11 in P. fasciatus. Several parasite groups were identified, including myxozoans, monogeneans, digeneans, and nematodes. The host A. bimaculatus exhibited a higher number of parasite taxa and abundance compared to P. fasciatus. The lower sample size for P. fasciatus reflects its naturally lower abundance in the wild, but the analyses accounted for sampling bias, ensuring comparisons of the parasite communities of these two fish species. The parasite communities of both species showed high similarity, indicating potential host-switching or co-evolutionary patterns. Positive correlations were observed between parasite diversity, species richness, abundance, and host weight/length. The study expands the knowledge of parasite–host associations and the geographical distribution of parasite species in Northeastern Brazil, a region where such data remain underreported.

In order to explore the molecular regulatory mechanism of temperature acclimation under long-term temperature stress in Acrossocheilus fasciatus, this study used high-throughput sequencing technology to analyze 60 days of breeding under five temperature conditions (12 °C, 16 °C, 20 °C, 24 °C, 28 °C). Compared with 20 °C, 9202, 4959 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were discovered in low-temperature groups (12 °C, 16 °C), whereas 133 and 878 DEGs were discovered in high-temperature groups (24 °C, 28 °C), respectively. The KEGG functional enrichment analysis revealed that DEGs were primarily enriched in tight junction, PI3 K-Akt signaling pathway and protein digestion and absorption in low-temperature groups, and mainly enriched in proximal tubule bicarbonate reclamation, protein digestion and absorption, and HIF-1 signaling pathway in high-temperature groups. The viability of transcriptome sequencing-based screening of DEGs for temperature adaptation in A. fasciatus was shown by the selection of eight DEGs for further validation by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), the findings of which were consistent with the RNA-seq data. According to the findings, protein digestion and absorption were primarily regulated by temperature variations, physiological stress was a significant regulator in regulation under high-temperature stress, and the immune system was a significant regulator in regulation under low-temperature stress. The transcriptional patterns of A. fasciatus under temperature stress are revealed in this study. This knowledge is crucial for understanding how A. fasciatus adapts to temperature and can help us better comprehend the environmental difficulties that A. fasciatus adaptation faces.

Crustaceans in the order Amphipoda are sensitive organisms for the assessment of sediment quality. In this work we performed 10-day toxicity tests on muddy sediments collected from a total of 29 sites in the Gulf of Finland, the Gulf of Riga and the Gulf of Bothnia (northeastern Baltic Sea) using Baltic Sea species such as the native amphipod Monoporeia affinis (Bousfield, 1989) and the invasive amphipod Gmelinoides fasciatus (Stebbing, 1899), and also compared these results with those of bioassays carried out using the standard test species, laboratory-cultivated amphipod Hyalella azteca (Saussure, 1858). The sediment samples (three cm of the upper layer) were collected by a GEMAX Dual Corer during the R/V “Aranda” cruises in August and September of 2009 and 2010. Toxicity of sediments in bioassays with M. affinis and G. fasciatus gave varied results depending on the amphipod species used. The lowest quality of sediments determined using M. affinis was recorded at sites located in the offshore and deepwater areas (60-100 m depths) of the Gulf of Finland characterized by hypoxic/anoxic conditions. Toxicity testing applying G. fasciatus showed that sediments at >50% of the study sites in the Gulf of Finland and in the Gulf of Riga can be assessed as highly contaminated. Males of G. fasciatus were significantly more sensitive to potential contamination in sediments than females. The lower survival of males under contaminant stress may result in a skewed sex ratio in natural populations and in a decline of reproduction success. The survival rate of G. fasciatus in the toxicity tests correlated positively with the Shannon diversity index (calculated for macrozoobenthos at the study sites), weight losses on ignition (%) in sediments, and it also showed a negative relation with the bottom water oxygen content (mg/l). The results suggest that G. fasciatus is the more sensitive species of the three amphipods tested and can be used as a indicator of sediment quality in the Baltic Sea and other water bodies.

We apply an integrative taxonomic approach, including analyses of molecular and morphological data, along with examination of available type materials, to address the longstanding questioned taxonomic status of Dinodon yunnanensis Werner, 1922, currently considered a junior synonym of Lycodon fasciatus (Anderson, 1879). Based on our data, we revalidate Dinodon yunnanensis, under the combination Lycodon yunnanensis (Werner, 1922) comb. nov. According to the new taxonomic status of Lycodon yunnanensis comb. nov, we restrict the distribution of Lycodon fasciatus to Northeastern India, Central Bhutan, Northern and Central Myanmar, Western and Southwestern Yunnan of China, Northwestern Thailand, Northern Laos, and Northwestern Vietnam. We suggest that Lycodon yunnanensis comb. nov should be considered Least Concern (LC) following the IUCN’s Red List categories. Further studies reassessing the populations of the Lycodon fasciatus complex in Xizang of China is required.

In order to assess epidemiology aspects of myxosporean infection in cultured Oreochromis niloticus and Hemichromis fasciatus fishes in Cameroon to develop efficient prevention and control program, a total of 320 Cichlid fishes (189 Oreochromis niloticus and 131 Hemichromis fasciatus) were collected from June 2019 to April 2020 in the ponds located at the Ngoundoup Village, Koutaba Subdivision, Noun Division, Region of West-Cameroon. They were examined both macroscopically and microscopically for myxosporean infections. The prevalence of infection was determined as a function of fish species, sex, size, target organs, and seasons. Results showed that kidneys and ovaries were the only infected organs and harbored nine and three myxosporean species of the genus Myxobolus respectively. A total of 154 fish were infected (54.38%). Irrespective of the parasite species, Oreochromis niloticus (75.13%) was significantly more infected than Hemichromis fasciatus (24.27%). The prevalence of parasites was very low (<25%) whatever the fish species. The sex and fish size did not significantly influence the prevalence of parasite species. The prevalence of Myxobolus tilapiae was negatively and significantly correlated (r= -0.20; p= 0.02) with Oreochromis niloticus size. The overall prevalence was significantly higher during the dry season (88.76%) than during the rainy (75.31%) and the transitional (20.29%) seasons. Oreochromis niloticus was not infected during the transitional season while Hemichromis fasciatus was more infected (p<0.001) during the dry season (26.84%) followed by the rainy (15.80%) and the transitional (10.32%) seasons. The high prevalence of myxosporeans infection may decrease the fish farming yield. The epidemiological data recorded help develop prevention and control strategies to boost the production of Oreochromis niloticus and Hemichromis fasciatus in Cameroon.

Trachidermus fasciatus is a roughskin sculpin fish widespread across the coastal areas of East Asia. Due to environmental destruction and overfishing, the population of this species is under threat. In order to protect this endangered species, it is important to have the genome sequenced. Reference genomes are essential for studying population genetics, domestic farming, and genetic resource protection. However, currently, no reference genome is available for Trachidermus fasciatus, and this has greatly hindered the research on this species. In this study, we integrated nanopore long-read sequencing, Illumina short-read sequencing, and Hi-C methods to thoroughly assemble the Trachidermus fasciatus genome. Our results provided a chromosome-level high-quality genome assembly with a predicted genome size of 542.6 Mbp (2n = 40) and a scaffold N50 of 24.9 Mbp. The BUSCO value for genome assembly completeness was higher than 96%, and the single-base accuracy was 99.997%. Based on EVM-StringTie genome annotation, a total of 19,147 protein-coding genes were identified, including 35,093 mRNA transcripts. In addition, a novel gene-finding strategy named RNR was introduced, and in total, 51 (82) novel genes (transcripts) were identified. Lastly, we present here the first reference genome for Trachidermus fasciatus; this sequence is expected to greatly facilitate future research on this species.

Manefishes of the family Caristiidae are rare meso-bathypelagic oceanic fishes with numerous problems regarding theirspecies-level taxonomy. We revisit Hartel and Triant’s assertion (Copeia, 1998, 746) that Pteraclis fasciatus Borodin andCaristius groenlandicus Jensen are synonyms. We found additional support for this idea in the modification of theventral unbranched caudal-fin rays. We conclude that the names are synonyms and that fasciatus has priority over groenlandicus because the former is the older name.

The Ponto-Caspian amphipod Echinogammarus ischnus (Stebbing, 1899) is reportedly replacing the North American amphipod Gammarus fasciatus Say, 1818, in the lower Great Lakes, but the two species appear to coexist in the upper St. Lawrence River several years after invasion by E. ischnus. A multi-site survey in the river between Lake Ontario and Montreal (Quebec) found that E. ischnus and G. fasciatus respond differently to substrate characteristics, water chemistry variables, and current velocity. Both species increase in abundance in the presence of dreissenid mussels. However, E. ischnus density is positively correlated with current velocity and an increasing proportion of gravel-sized sediment, while G. fasciatus density is positively correlated with benthic filamentous algal (Cladophora spp.) biomass, macrophyte biomass, and pH. Habitat heterogeneity within the river may be promoting the coexistence of native and exotic amphipods by allowing them to segregate along physicochemical gradients.

Abstract Breeding strategies of Acrossocheilus fasciatus were studied from 592 specimens collected monthly during May 2007 and April 2008 in the Puxi Stream of the Huangshan Mountain. Sex ratio of the studied population was 0.90 : 1 (♀ : ♂), not significantly different from 1:1. Both sexes reached their first sexual maturity at age 2 (the second calendar year of their birth). Fifty percent of females and males reached maturity at a total length of 69.75 mm and 69.36 mm respectively, and the minimum total length was 61.54 mm and 58.96 mm, respectively. Based on the monthly changes in gonado-somatic index and egg-development process, the breeding season of the population was from May to August, with one obvious interval (in June) occurring in the breeding activity for the females. The nonsynchronous development of oocytes observed in mature ovaries indicated that A. fasciatus is a batch spawner. Absolute fecundity of A. fasciatus ranged from 308 to 2002 eggs with a mean of 857 eggs, increased significantly with total length, and was significantly different among three age groups. Relative fecundity ranged from 38.63 to 71.70 egg/g with a mean of 53.29 egg/ g, and was not significantly different among the three age groups. It was suggested that these reproductive characteristics were adaptive strategies for A. fasciatus to acclimatize to lotic water where environmental factors were unstable but predictable.

Geological events and landscape features, as well as changes in the climate during the Pliocene period, have shaped the distribution of genetic diversity and demographic history of freshwater fish in mainland China. In this study, we investigated the phylogeny and population genetic structure of Acrossocheilus species (A. fasciatus, A. kreyenbergii and A. wenchowensis) in the Zhejiang region by the mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt-b) and control (D-loop) region s. Mitochondrial phylogenetic analysis revealed three major lineages (lineages A, B and C), which may represent A. fasciatus, A. wenchowensis and A. kreyenbergii, respectively. Our results revealed that A. fasciatus and A. wenchowensis diverged from A. kreyenbergii in the Zhejiang region. The uplift of the Wuyi Mountains and the Xianxia Mountains served as an important geographic barrier in the diversification of the three Acrossocheilus species. The most recent common ancestors (TMRCAs) of the three lineages and lineages A + B were dated to 1.859 and 1.614 myr, respectively. Our results indicate that the effective population sizes of A. fasciatus and A. wenchowensis remained constant from the past to the present, as supported by ABC analysis. For conservation and protection, a strategy is required because of their genetic uniqueness, and we suggest that the two regions divided by the Xianxia Mountains be regarded as different management units (Mus), conforming to the major zoological regions of the Zhejiang region.

A new genus and a new species of acanthocephalan are described from the numbat Myrmecobius fasciatus, a termite-eating marsupial from south-western Australia. Multisentis myrmecobius belongs to the family Oligacanthorhynchidae and a key to the genera of this family is given. The life cycle is presumed to involve termites as the intermediate host. The definitive host-parasite relationship is assumed to have evolved since the origins of M. fasciatus from ancestral marsupial forms before the late Miocene.

The proximate constituents and the fatty acids of the lipid of milk taken from M. fasciatus living in their natural habitat were determined. The lipid is practically all triglyceride. The fatty acid complement was very like that of the milk fat in another anti- and termite-eating mammal, Tachyglossus aculeatus. The fatty acid composition of the milk fat of a M. fasciatus eating a diet based on eggs and milk powder, was different from that of the wild animals.

This paper presents a taxonomic revision and phylogenetic analysis of nine known species of the genus Phonoctonus Stål, 1853, distributed exclusively in the Afrotropical region. The revision and phylogenetic analysis were performed using morphological data. A full redescription for all species is provided, taxonomical problems are clarified, and diagnostic characters are presented and illustrated. Based on the analysis, thirteen species are recognised as valid: Phonoctonus bifasciatus stat. nov., P. caesar, P. elegans, P. fairmairei stat. nov., P. fasciatus, P. grandis, P. immitis stat. rev., P. luridus, P. lutescens, P. nigrofasciatus stat. rev., P. picta stat. nov., P. picturatus stat. rev., and P. principalis. New synonymies are proposed: Phonoctonus nigrofasciatus= P. fasciatus var. poultoni syn. nov., P. picturatus = P. fasciatus var. discalis syn. nov., and P. principalis = P. validus syn. nov. An identification key to separate the species, drawings of dorsal habitus, and distribution maps of all valid species are presented. Performed morphological phylogenetic analyses indicate monophyly of the genus Phonoctonus.

The results of research of bottom biocenoses of the Zaonezhye area (Zaonezhsky Peninsula in the northeastern part) of Lake Onego in 2023 are presented. Insignificant differences in the spatial distribution of quantitative characteristics of macrozoobenthos were revealed. Quantitative indicators such as abundance and biomass of macrozoobenthos ranged from 1.56-4,01 thousand ind/m² and 0.35-3.19 g/m², respectively. It is shown that the invasive species Gmelinoides fasciatus (Stebbing 1899) (Crustacea: Amphipoda) has naturalized in the littoral. Amphipoda <i>G. fasciatus</i> plays a dominant role in the abundance of the bottom community in Keften-Guba and in the vicinity of Padmozero village. It was noted that the native species Gammarus lacustris Sars 1863 was not recorded anywhere. Quite rapid dispersal of the Baikal species G. fasciatus on the littoral of the reservoir suggests that in the coming years these amphipods may colonize the Lizhemskaya Guba (Bay) of the lake, where there are habitats not subject to its invasion, according to the literature.

To examine the evolution of sexual size dimorphism (SSD), interspecific studies are often performed to generate hypotheses for the origin and maintenance of SSD. Although these methods are invaluable to our understanding of the evolution of SSD, they often quantify SSD for a species based on few populations. We found a significant sex-specific latitudinal cline in Plestiodon fasciatus (L., 1758) (= Eumeces fasciatus (L., 1758)), a species that was previously considered to be monomorphic for body size. Male body size significantly increased with increasing latitude, whereas female body size was relatively constant. Our findings argue for the importance of increased understanding and appreciation of intraspecific variation in SSD. We suggest that a more integrated approach to SSD be employed, where both intraspecific and interspecific variation is considered. We provide a foundation for posing hypotheses of the causes and consequences of SSD in P. fasciatus and perhaps other members of the species group.

A new species of the genus Lycodon Boie in Fitzinger is described on the basis of three specimens collected on the Khorat Plateau, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Thailand. Lycodon gibsonae spec. nov. is superficially similar to L. fasciatus (Anderson), it differs by its much larger size, a higher number of ventral and subcaudal scales, and a lower number of bands on the body, the last three characters presenting no overlap with those of L. fasciatus sensu stricto. The new species seems to be endemic to the Khorat Plateau.

The article presents data on the study of the diversity of crustacean communities in the Moscow-river basin. Two most common are two species of amphipods, invasive species Gmelinodes fasciatus and the native species Gammarus lacustris, were detected and studies during the study. However, the number of one of the most important bioindicator species of crustaceans, Asellus aquaticus found in our samples is insufficient for quantitative conclusions. At the same time, population of G. fasciatus can be characterized as stable at all studied stations and the species can be used as bioindicator of the natural condition of the river flowing within the Moscow City. The species seems to be significantly less sensitive to environment conditions and especially anthropogenic pollution than the native amphipod species G. lacustris and can successfully replace A. aquaticus as bioindicator species in the area where the latter species is absent. Thus, a new bioindicator pair Gammarus lacustris / Gmelinoides fasciatus is suggested for using in estimation water pollution In European part of the Russian Federation and adjacent areas.
