This article examines the role of the artistic image of the fireplace in «Eugene Onegin» by Alexander Pushkin. The image of the fireplace is not only a reflection of the realities of the noble life of the 15th – 20th centuries, but also a kind of companion for the characters of the novel. The task of the research is to determine the role and compositional functions of this image in the novel. It has been established that the image of the fireplace in Pushkin’s novel is found in the first, fourth, seventh and eighth chapters of the text, along with multiple references to stoves. The authors of the article tried to trace how the image of the fireplace changed from chapter to chapter, and also to determine what caused this change. The article presents various interpretations of the image of the fireplace not only in the novel «Eugene Onegin», but also in other texts by A. Pushkin, as well as in the works of other authors who implement this image in their works. It has been established that the image of the fireplace performs many functions: it reflects the desire of the characters to follow the trend of fashion; the fireplace is a traditional symbol of warmth, comfort and home; a place near the fire is a place of rest and relaxation; the fireplace often turns out to be a symbol of sadness, melancholy and a place of loneliness, etc. With the help of this image, the author characterizes not only the protagonist of the novel, but also himself.

Spatial patterns are formed based on local wisdom and Karangtengah Hamlet settlement which is located in the cold climate of the mountainous area in Banjarnegara Regency, Central Java has been discovered to have a uniqueness in using the fireplace as the center of its activities. Therefore, this research was conducted to uncover the basic concept of fireplace-based house spatial pattern in this settlement using a qualitative method which involves combining interview, observation, and documentation. The process also involved using 33 houses as the case study with the criterion for selection being the active use of the fireplace. The results showed the placement of fireplace in these houses was influenced by the kinship system and the purpose was to have spatial patterns designed to reduce migration from these settlements to cities.

The aim of this work is to unravel the genesis of fireplace in a structure of ancient dwelling-house. The work is based in archaeological findings situated in Lithuanian territory. Fireplace has been and remains one of the most essential components in the existence and in the structure of a house, but so it did not attain a special research in our architecturology so far. There is various sparse and scattered data on the fireplaces of a dwelling-houses in a works of archaeologists, historians and ethnologists. The work‘s attempt is to fill the above-mentioned gap. Time period, discussed in this article, is the earliest stage in a development of a fireplace, starting jointly with the beginning of building stationary dwelling-houses.

The importance of the work is based on the necessity of developing energy-efficient heating systems in the conditions of rapid increase of energy prices. Heating systems for buildings and fuels for them are analyzed. It is established that a combined heating system with several sources of thermal energy, one of which is turbo fireplace is the most energy-efficient. The processes in fireplaces with a water loop are considered. The design of turbo fireplace is improved by applying a thermoelectric battery. The elements of the thermoelectric battery are selected and its power is determined. The power of the integrated heating system of the building is calculated. The block scheme of the integrated heating system is considered. The heating system integrator is selected. The algorithm of microcontroller operation with advanced turbo fireplace with a thermoelectric battery is developed and a microcontroller operation is chosen. The algorithm of the integrated heating system developed an algorithm for the operation of its microcontroller.

The article is literary in nature: the example of the furnace shows the difference between the logos and the archetype, as well as the principles of modifying the logos into an archetype. The aim of the work is to systematize a wide range of values of the archetypal symbol of the furnace, finding the sacred logos to which they ascend. The article is written on the material of ancient mythology and literature of the New Time: the archetypical images, related to the archetype of the furnace, such as the affected heel, fire, serpent, are analyzed - their relevance to world culture and literature, related to their repeatability and stability, is proved. So it is concluded that there is a close relationship between all the elements of the semiotic system: as a result of the disappearance of one of the furnaces, the archetype of the furnace, from everyday culture, the attitude and principles of human behavior changed, which radically affected the course of history.

Abstract In this article the etymology of the Modern German word Kobold ‘house spirit’ and its cognates is revised. It is argued that the Germanic root *kub- meaning ‘hut, small chamber’ which consitutes the first element of Modern German Kobold, is a loan from the Latin/Romance group of words deriving from Lat. cubīle, cubīculum. This Romance element may have replaced an earlier PGm. *gub- meaning ‘fire’, attested in Old Norse gufa ‘vapour, steam’, which goes back to the PIE root *ghu̯obh-. This theory is supported by French gobelin where the initial *g- is easily explained from Germanic *g-. The second element of the compound should be identified with the source of Finnish haltija ‘house spirit’ which derives from Gm. *haldija-. The compound was therefore Gm. *gub-haldija- and referred to the house spirit as the keeper of the fire, a concept well-known from Northern European folklore.

Abstract Presented contribution deals with the verification of conditions for use of combustion products‘ heat, generated by combustion of wood in a fireplace used in a household. It is necessary to know the temperature behaviour of the fireplace to determine the adequacy of the technical solution for using combustion products‘ heat. The combustion products‘ temperature at the upper part of the chimney is 80-120 °C. The dew point value was established to be below 51 °C. The average observed value of combustion product velocity is 1.6 m s-1. The volume flow rate of combustion products is 12 m3 h-1. Measured values allow for effective solution of the use of combustion products‘ heat.

The paper contains the results of the field experimental firings in fireplaces and in ovens made on the basis of Samara pottery experimental expedition (Dr N.P. Salugina is the leader of the expedition) in 2013. The author put forward two goals: one is to discover the basic knowledge on firing process with various kinds of fuel, and second is to find out the specific features to discern the vessels fired in fireplaces from the vessels fired in ovens. 20 vessels were prepared to the experiment. The first 10 pots were made of natural clay and the second 10 vessels were made of pottery paste (clay + grog + cow dung). Five simultaneous firings with various kinds of fuel were organized in fireplace and in oven. The author describes in detail the program, main steps, and maximum temperature of firings, the photos of the vessels, and the results of their analytical studies. After the experiments the author came to the next conclusions: firstly - there are absent the reliable features to distinguish the vessels fired in fireplace and in oven, secondly - there is one dependence between a kind pottery paste and a color of fired vessels and another relation between pottery paste and a degree of high-temperature baking of vessels.

The industry standard for vented gas fireplaces allows the glass fronts to reach temperatures in excess of 1000°F (538C), depending on the type of glass used. Young children have suffered painful burns after inadvertently falling against or touching the hot glass. In many cases, the child’s parent was near the child when the injury occurred. This article explores human factors/ergonomics issues that play a role in burn injuries from gas fireplace glass, including consumer awareness of the hazard, child development, and product placement in the home. The limits of voluntary standards and need for mandatory regulation are discussed.

The solid fuel heaters are popular in Slovakia again, where about 50% of new freestanding homes have one. The classic fireplace, with a blazing fire open to the room as traditional symbol of comfort and security becomes with better building thermal insulation a primary rather than an occasional indulgence heat source. This paper reports the results of field measurement and simulation investigating the thermal comfort criteria in occupied space with fireplace heating system. The field study was performed in a small furnished living-room. The indoor surface temperatures were captured with infrared camera and the mean radiant temperatures were calculated by the ESP-r simulation tool. Thermal comfort prediction maps (PPD and PMV index) are presented to describe range of occupant comfort levels with mean air temperature, air velocity and clothing level variations. It was found that this system provide full area improved thermal climate only with high air temperature level. The study was limited to the case with no vertical air temperature distribution.

This paper presents the prototype design, implementation and testing of a thermoelectric generator unusually applied to the fireplace stoves. The tested low-cost thermoelectric generator can be used as an alternative low source of electricity in areas with limited access to public electricity networks. Moreover, inclusion of a thermoelectric generator in the fireplace stove structure is novelty and interesting accessory in offer for customer. This study focuses on testing and determining the output values of voltage and current of the initial design using the natural and forces air cooling. The results are obtained by developed measuring device for that testing. The low-cost thermoelectric generator provided the power of 1.5 W at temperature difference 94°C using forced air cooling. Thus a thermoelectric generator prototype design is suitable for powering LED lighting and fans or recharging a mobile phone battery.

The admin will make sure or deny the information. If the admin make sure breaking out of fire then system can right away raise an alarm and a SMS will be sent to the nearby fire brigade.

The present work concerns the modification of the grid of the Nansu stove, used in many households in Africa and in particular in Benin. The performance of the stove obtained (modified Nansu) was estimated and compared on the one hand with that of the corresponding reference stove and on the other hand with that of the ordinary Nansu stove. To do this, the Controlled Cooking Test (CCT) was used to determine the specific fuel consumption and cooking time for three dishes, namely rice, beans and voandzou. The results of these tests show that the modified Nansu fireplace is significantly more economical, in terms of fuel consumption and cooking time, compared to the ordinary Nansu fireplace. The savings made by the modified Nansu stove compared to the ordinary Nansu stove are 34.57% to 64.31% in specific consumption and 9.42% to 37.81% in cooking time depending on the type of dish.

Abstract Older adults protect their well-being under stressful experiences by carefully selecting their environments, social interactions, and tasks. This bias toward positive over negative experiences may reduce engagement in novel, intellectually challenging, or social complex activities that promote healthy aging over the long term. Environments that foster socioemotional well-being could provide older adults with the psychological resources to engage in novel and challenging tasks that support healthy aging. This study examined how relaxation elements within the environment, such as a fireplace, can support socioemotional experiences while engaging in complex cognitive tasks. The study employed a 2x2 (relaxation vs. not X stress vs. not) within-subject design and took place within the home office of a home simulation environment. Under each condition, 61 participants (age 50–82, 57% female) played a cognitive game on a tablet, reflected for 30 seconds, and described feelings while playing the game by telling a story and rating positive and negative adjectives. Relaxation and stress were manipulated via an electric fireplace and a modified Trier paradigm where game performance was observed remotely by a neurologist. The relaxation condition significantly differentiated the coupling of positive and negative sentiment and positive and negative affect. The negative correlation between positive and negative affect increased, whereas stories became more emotionally complex, with both positive and negative sentiment, when the fireplace was on. Our findings suggest that simple modifications to the environment can differentiate the socioemotional experiences of engaging in novel and challenging experiences. The implications for enrichment seeking in older adulthood are discussed.

Abstract We defined enrichment seeking as the capacity for adults to engage in the novel and intellectually challenging activities for exploring diverse experience. Although enrichment seeking is associated with cognitive resilience in older adulthood, the tendency for older adults to adopt explorative behavior decreases with age in concert with decline in executive control. The goal of our study was to examine to what extent older adults can adjust their cognitive foraging performance under stress by inducing relaxation through the task environment. We used cognitive foraging games (including word search puzzle games) to understand how older adults optimize their search performance by the tradeoff between exploration (seeking new information) and exploitation (staying at old information). A modified Trier paradigm, where game performance was observed by a neurologist via video conferencing, induced stress; relaxation was manipulated by turning on an electric fireplace in the study room. The study followed a 2 (relaxation) X 2 (stress) within-subjects experimental design. Sixty-one adults (34 middle-age; 27 older adults; 54% women) played games on a tablet under stress / no stress conditions with and without the fireplace in a simulated smart home environment. The interaction effect of relaxation and stress on cognitive foraging performance was significant, indicating that with the relaxation elements in the environment (i.e., a fireplace), older adults are likely to have better cognitive foraging performance under stress. The association can be in part explained by individual differences in cognitive abilities and strategies. Implications on facilitating enrichment seeking through environmental factors are discussed.

This paper is an analytical research of semi-subterranean houses in the Joseon period, focusing on the temporal changes in the structure and artifacts. Total 29 dwellings of the Joseon period were unearthed at Hwanggol site of Majeong-ri in Anseong. The floor plans of the houses were rectangular, square, circular, oval, unclear, and 呂-shaped. Along with pits and postholes, there were fireplaces and floor heating systems as internal facilities of the houses. Total 13 fireplaces were classified into A type and B type according to the structure. Type A, being built with protruding the house wall in a reversed U-shape, was larger than type B being built on the house wall. Considering its quite small size and absence of cooking-related facilities and tools, the fireplace seemed to have performed function of lighting or heating rather than that of cooking. The structure of only 3 was recognizable out of the 6 floor heating systems uncovered at Hangul site. The floor heating systems were reported from only unclear and 呂- shaped floor plan houses. The space of the 呂-shaped floor plan house was separated by heating facility centering on the fireplace. In the flue system consisting of a fireplace, a flue system part, and a smoke control part, a line of flue system was connected to the smoke control part by turning in a circular or square way along the house wall. The floor heating system of unclear floor plan house at the west slope of the site consisted of a fireplace and a flue system part, and the 3 lines of flue system extended to the direction of the contour. Classification of these houses based on heating and cooking facilities yielded 3 main types and 4 subtypes as following: TypeⅠ with no facilities, TypeⅡ only with a fireplace, TypeⅢ only with a floor heating system; TypeⅡ was again subdivided intoTypeⅡ-1 and Ⅱ-2 to the projection of smoke control part or not; TypeⅢ was also subdivided into TypeⅢ-1 and Ⅲ-2 to the structure of floor heating system. Consideration on uncovered artifacts helped to divided houses into two groups. While one group of houses yielded buncheong ware (a grayish-blue-powdered celadon), bamboo - joint foots, and white porcelains with clay support , the other group yielded white porcelains with sand support without buncheong ware. Buncheong ware was popular from the late 15C to 16C, bamboo-joint foot and white porcelain with clay support were popular from the early 15C to the late 16C. Considering the emergence of the sand support technique in the 17C, the date of houses was divided into before and after the 17C. Hwanggol site of Majeong-ri in Anseong, yielding archaeological features including pit houses, sites of buildings, firing features, and drainage facilities can be understood as residential sites occupied from the 15C to 17C and after.

Abstract The growing demand for electricity produced from renewable sources and the development of new technologies for the combustion of biomass, arose a growing interest on the possible coupling of thermoelectric modules with stove-fireplaces. The current thermoelectric generators have a solid structure, do not produce noise, do not require maintenance and can be used for the recovery of waste heat or excess, at the same time they hold a very low conversion efficiency and they need an adequate cooling system. Nevertheless, they still hold a cost, which is still too high to make them attractive. Nonetheless, if the modules are applied to a heat source which otherwise would be wasted, the attractiveness of the solution certainly rises. In this study, a thermodynamic analysis of a stove-fireplace is presented, considering both combustion process and the flame – walls heat transfer of the. A design solution for a concentrator device to funnel the wasted heat from the fireplace to the thermo-electric modules is also presented.

The article presents the publication and a comprehensive analysis of pottery finds from the burial M26 and a ritual fireplace, connected to it. The burial was investigated in the Hellenistic necropolis of Tauric Chersonese during the excavations, conducted of А.N. Ščeglov in 1963 (fig. 1). The site located on the Eastern slope of Pesochnaya Bay, along the ancient road leading to the Western city gate (Fig. 2). Most of the ceramic debris was collected from the ritual fireplace and the burial M26. There were 3015 ceramic fragments in total (tabls. I–III). The largest part of the pottery fragments in the assemblage presented by Black-glazed tableware: fish plates, saltcellars, bowls (figs. 3–5). Plane wares: lopadions, jugs and plates (fig. 6). The total amount of 90–130 whole vessels might be estimated at the assemblage. Analysis of the types and forms allows dating the assemblage within the end of IV – third quarter of III c. BC.

This paper reports radiocarbon dates of samples from archaeological sites in the Itaparica Dam region of the São Francisco River (Brazil). This region is important due to the evidence of its use by several prehistoric groups of hunter-gatherers. In the 1980s, a Brazilian state hydroelectric company (CHESF) engaged the federal universities of Bahia and Pernambuco to perform an archaeological rescue excavation at the Itaparica Dam reservoir area. This excavation allowed the collection of a large number of ceramics and lithic artifacts as well as fireplace charcoal. In this study, fireplace charcoal samples from the Bahia State riverside of the Itaparica Dam were selected and used for dating purposes. The 14C ages were between 3840 and 210 BP, and the values of δ13C range from −22.93 to −24.81%. The 14C dates, in addition to the archaeological findings, indicate that the presence of humans in the region was contemporary with the intermediate levels of older sites found in the adjacent area, and also indicate different settlement periods.

An awareness of increasing climate and health problems has driven the development of new functional and affordable soot-oxidation catalysts for stationary sources, such as fireplaces. In this study, Al(OH)3, water glass and acidic aluminium phosphate binder materials were mixed with soot-oxidation catalysts. The effect of the binder on the performance of the Ag/La-Al2O3 catalyst was examined, while the Pt/La-Al2O3 catalyst bound with Al(OH)3 was used as a reference. Soot was oxidised above 340 °C on the Ag/La-Al2O3 catalyst, but at 310 °C with same catalyst bound with Al(OH)3. The addition of water glass decreased the catalytic performance because large silver crystals and agglomeration resulted in a blockage of the support material’s pores. Pt/La-Al2O3 bound with Al(OH)3 was ineffective in a fireplace environment. We believe that AgOx is the active form of silver in the catalyst. Hence, Ag/La-Al2O3 was shown to be compatible with the Al(OH)3 binder as an effective catalyst for fireplace soot oxidation.

In recent years the climate change issue, coupled with the concern of resource depletion, is favoring the blossoming of renewable energy conversion systems. Particularly, the development of new technologies for the combustion of biomass has drawn special attention to the possibility of coupling thermoelectric modules with stove-fireplaces. The current thermoelectric generators have many attractive points, such as a solid structure, absence of noise, and no maintenance required; however, due to their very low efficiency (4–8%), they are still economically non-attractive. However, if the modules are applied to a heat source, which otherwise would be wasted, the interest in the solution certainly grows. In this study, an exergy analysis of a stove-fireplace coupled with thermo-electric modules is performed, with the aim of identifying the critical issues of the overall system. The obtained exergy efficiency of the whole system resulted to be of 36.2%. A sensitivity analysis on the main parameters affecting the second law efficiency of the system (such as number of cells, dimension of the stove fireplace, heat input …) is also carried out.

The results of the numerical study of peat and brown coal combustion processes in avortex furnace with a power of 2.5 MW are presented. The processes in a vortex furnace with counterswirling flows with an upper supply of fuel and primary air and a supply of secondary air at thebottom of the furnace are studied. The removal of slag occurs in the bottom of the furnace. Theparticle size of fuel is from 25 microns to 250 microns. The calorific value of peat is 12.3 MJ/kg, thevolatile content is Vdaf=38 %, humidity is Wp=40 %, the stoichiometric coefficient is 7 kg air/kg fuel.The calorific value of brown coal is 13.9 MJ/kg, volatile content Vdaf=25-35 %, humidity Wp=30 %,stoichiometric coefficient is 4.3 kg air/kg fuel. The ash content of the fuel varies from Ap=20 % toAp=35 %. Ash content and humidity are Аp+Wp=65 %. It has been found that at ash content ofАp=30-35 % and humidity Wp=30-35 % the combustion process is unstable due to the problem ofremoving moisture and ash from the furnace volume. The temperature of the flue gases at the outletof the furnace when burning peat is found to be 1711 ºC, and the temperature of the ash is 1380 ºC,which ensures solid ash removal. The temperature of flue gases during the combustion of brown coalis 1888 ºC. A higher air excess coefficient is noted: a=2.36 in the process of burning peat and a=2.0when burning brown coal. The calculation results indicate that this ensures a high degree of cokecombustion in the particles that are captured: 99.8 % (peat particles) and 93.9 % (lignite). Theunderburning of fuel particles that are carried away is 0 % (peat) and 3.04 % (lignite). Theunderburning of fuel particles that are captured is 0.06 % (peat) and 0 % (lignite). The ratio ofoncoming flows is 0.2, which ensures the minimum hydraulic resistance of the furnace. Peat andbrown coal are similar to each other in chemical composition after the stages of coalification.Therefore, similar characteristics of combustion processes can be obtained by burning a composite mixture of peat/lignite (50 %/50 %), both in pulverized combustion and in the combustion of briquettegranules and water-fuel suspension – water-peat-lignite.

This work proposes a comprehensive approach to modifying the design of wood stoves with a heating power up to 20 kW, including design works, simulations, and experimental research. The work is carried out in two stages. In the first part, a numerical model is proposed of the fireplace insert including fluid flow, the chemical combustion reaction, and heat exchange (FLUENT software is applied to solve the problem). The results of the simulation were compared with the experiment carried out on the test bench. A comparison of the experimental and numerical results was made for the temperature distribution along with the concentration of CO, CO2, and O2. Construction changes were proposed in the second stage, together with numerical simulations whose goal was an increase in the efficiency of the heating devices. The results obtained show that the average temperature in the chimney flue, which has a low value that is a determinant of the higher efficiency of the heating devices, was reduced relative to the initial design of the fireplace intake by 11%–16% in all cases. The retrofit enhanced stable heat release from the wood stove, which increased the efficiency and reduced the harmful components of combustion.

Abstract Awareness of the increasing global issues regarding global warming and climate change has encouraged building designers to look back on knowledge of traditional architecture as energy-efficient and sustainable solutions. This study focuses on the traditional architecture of Rumah Kaki Seribu as sustainable architecture. Rumah Kaki Seribu is a traditional architecture located in the Arfak Mountains, West Papua, inhabited by the Arfak Tribe. Each architectural element of Rumah Kaki Seribu has a different sustainability value. The sustainability value of Rumah Kaki Seribu discussed is the concentration on the fireplace element and the roof element. The fireplace and roof elements were analyzed using the eco-cultural concept of the six competing logics of sustainable architecture by Simon Guy and Graham Farmer. Eco-cultural logic is a logic that is closely related to traditional architecture. The characteristics of sustainable buildings that use eco-cultural logic can be determined by looking at several parameters, namely the image of space, the source of environmental knowledge, the building image, technologies, and the idealized concept of place. The study aims to learn traditional architecture as a design approach to understand and respect the environmental context for solutions to global issues that occur.

This essay examines the representation of gender and sovereignty in a little examined design for a royal fireplace created by Hans Holbein the Younger during the reign of Henry viii. When Henry sought to divorce Catherine and to establish the Church of England, the Bridewell precinct became a site for political upheaval. As Holinshed’s Chronicle details and William Shakespeare and John Fletcher’s 1613 All Is True or Henry viii would later dramatize, Bridewell and the neighboring Blackfriars staged the divorce trial and removal of Catherine’s sovereignty as Queen. By examining Holbein’s design that Bridewell palace became a palimpsest upon which the crown continually cultivated its dynastic desires –desires that Holbein’s design prove to be imbricated with questions of gender and sovereignty. Gender, sex, and reproduction are central to Holbein’s representation of the Tudor dynasty. Yet, alongside this gendered discourse is a legal one. Holbein depicts the law and justice as mechanisms which can redefine a sovereign woman’s subjectivity and curb her agency in submission to her King and husband. Thus, from Holbein’s fireplace emerges an ideology of familial dynasty and imperial aspirations built atop the legal subjection of women.

In cloud computing, a shared storage server, which provides a network-attached storage device, is usually used for centralized data management. However, when multiple virtual machines (VMs) concurrently access the storage server through the network, the performance of each VM may decrease due to limited bandwidth. To address this issue, a flash-based storage device such as a solid state drive (SSD) is often employed as a cache in the host server. This host-side flash cache saves remote data, which are frequently accessed by the VM, locally in the cache. However, frequent VM migration in the data center can weaken the effectiveness of a host-side flash cache as the migrated VM needs to warm up its flash cache again on the destination machine. This study proposes Cachemior, Firepan, and FirepanIF for rapid flash-cache migration in cloud computing. Cachemior warms up the flash cache with a data preloading approach using the shared storage server after VM migration. However, it does not achieve a satisfactory level of performance. Firepan and FirepanIF use the source node’s flash cache as the data source for flash cache warm-up. They can migrate the flash-cache more quickly than conventional methods as they can avoid storage and network congestion on the shared storage server. Firepan incurs downtime of the VM during flash cache migration for data consistency. FirepanIF minimizes the VM downtime with the invalidation filter, which traces the I/O activity of the migrated VM during flash cache migration in order to invalidate inconsistent cache blocks. We implement and evaluate the three flash cache migration techniques in a realistic virtualized environment. FirepanIF demonstrates that it can improve the performance of the I/O workload by up to 21.87% compared to conventional methods.
