Remittances sent by migrants are an important component of the development finance for the countries. India has secured position as the world's top beneficiary of remittances with USD 80 million in 2018. The study was done in the Maharashtra State which leads the number in remittance (17%). The study highlighted the foreign exchange remittance behaviour of NRIs. The present study tried to understand the remittance behaviour of NRIs and remittance behaviour with respect to demographic profile .The remittance behaviour is studied with the help of demographic and non-demographic factors such as gender, age, occupation, education, purpose of remittance, frequency of remittance, risk in remittance etc.

Abstract This paper explores the political and economic determinants of remittance transfers by foreign workers in hosting countries with an application to the case of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Our empirical model is estimated with the fixed-effects technique applied on annual data covering the period 1996-2019. The main result confirms that both the economic and political stability do matter to remittance transfers. First, our findings suggest that higher per capita growth across the GCC region tends to discourage remittance transfers. Second, we find a statistically significant and positive relationship between oil prices and remittance transfers. Third, our findings show that political stability across the host countries can shape remittances. Put it simply, higher political stability tends to induce lower remittance outflows. While conventional findings on importance of economic factors for remittances are confirmed, this research signifies that any change in political stability across the GCC might affect decisions made by foreign workers. This finding has general implications for similar regions throughout the world suggesting that political stability has a strong effect on the flow of remittances.

Remittance flows into low/middle-income counties are on a continuous rise and this trend is seen in Nepal as well. There is a constant increase in the number of the Nepalese workers migrating for foreign employment and that has been instrumental to boost the remittance inflow into the country. Remittance is contributing significantly to Gross Domestic Product and is emerging as a backbone of the country’s economy. However, the ways remittances contribute to social development necessitates that many facets of development be explored because they affect the country’s development in multiple ways. This study attempts to analyse the possibility that remittance positively contributes to social development, considering health and educational development as its proxies. Based on the latest available disaggregated educational enrolment and nutrition data of 2009 A.D. by districts, this study analyses the impact of the remittances on school enrolment and improvement in health status of families who remain at home. The results show a significant relationship between remittance and school enrolment but it also shows an insignificant relationship between remittance and health. The findings may be of interest to the countries and the policy makers with remittance being the dominant source of foreign currency. As the results of this study have indicated that remittances may serve as a contributing factor to the educational enrolment for social development.

The major goal of this research is to assess Bangladesh's foreign remittance inflows. In recent years, remittance has risen to prominence as one of the most important economic variables, since it helps with the surplus balance of payments, foreign reserves, aggregate savings and money circulation. Bangladesh's foreign trade has begun to improve after overcoming the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. In comparison to the previous fiscal year, total export earnings declined by 16.93% to US$ 33,674.09 million in FY2019–20. During the first half of fiscal year 2020–21, export earnings totalled US$ 35,180.81 million, up 13.64% over the same period of the previous fiscal year. Furthermore, remittance earnings are growing at a slower rate than emigration from Bangladesh, owing to a rising number of unskilled or semi-skilled labourers in overseas migration rather than professional. Remittances have a great impact on Bangladesh's economy. Keywords: Foreign remittance, money laundering, foreign exchange, foreign trade, migration, economy;

Objective: The aim of this study review the current literature for determining the nexus between foreign remittance and economic growth in Bangladesh. Foreign remittance plays a pivotal role for economic growth in developing countries. It has taken a considerable attention to promote economic development compared to others sources of capital inflows such as aids, loans and foreign direct investments due to direct impact on socio-economic acceleration in a country. As a developing country, Bangladesh is one of the top 10 remittance-recipient countries in the world. Recently, the trends of remittance inflow are shrinking due to geopolitics and Middle East crisis. Methodology: Previous studies were reviewed, made literature matrix for findings literature and methodological gaps. Results: The evidences in the literature reveal that the nexus between foreign remittance and economic growth is inclusive and ambiguous for direct or indirect transmission channels through the inclusion of other variables in the analysis as financial development, investment, trade, consumption and poverty alleviation. Implications: Therefore, remittances inflow not only enhances economic growth and development but also reduces poverty in the labor exporting country.

Foreign employment is an important part of Nepalese labour market. The national poverty reduction strategy and the previous plans have given priority to foreign employment as a source of labour absorption and poverty alleviation. This study focuses on Nepalese labour market condition, foreign employment, remittance inflow and their contribution on national economy. In Nepal, foreign employment and remittance inflow have been issues of concern over the last two decades. In this connection foreign employment was estimated to be 4.36 million up to the fiscal year 2016/17 (except India) and 56 percent households had received remittances in the fiscal year 2010/

In this study, we investigate the impact of remittances and foreign aid (official foreign assistance) on investment and saving in South Asian countries. We also analyze the comparative influence of remittances and foreign aid in stimulating saving and investment. We use a sample of five South Asian countries over the period 1985-2018 and employ OLS and 2SLS methods to estimate the effect of remittance and foreign aid on saving and investment. The result reveals that remittance has a positive impact on saving but has no significant effect on investment and shows that foreign aid has no significant impact on saving but negatively influences investment. In line with our results, a rise in 10 percent of remittances in South Asia raises savings by 1.6 percent in the OLS estimates and by 1.7 percent when we use 2SLS. At the same time for a 10% increase in foreign aid decreases saving by 4.3% and 3.3%, respectively, in two methods. For the second regression, an increase in 10% remittances hamper investment by 1.3% and 1% for OLS and 2SLS, respectively. And for the analogous 10% increase in foreign aid decrease investment by 5.4% and 5.2%, respectively. However, if foreign aid is efficiently used, it can be an important complement to remittances by permitting households to overcome the minimum threshold level and they can use a bigger portion of their remittances for savings and investment motive.

This research study examines the impact of remittances on quality of life. In order to accomplish the objectives, the study uses primary data which are collected from 403 households of District Dir Lower, Pakistan. Results summarized that incoming foreign remittances have a positive effect on education. Foreign remittances improve the household income level, this income is further utilized for different educational expenses. Therefore, remittance recipient families spend more than that of non-receiving families on education. In addition, remittances also increase the probability of children’s enrollment in schools. On the other hand, remittances are positively associated with family health status. The results revealed that 83% of the remittance recipient families have the ability to access basic healthcare needs, whereas 64% of non-receiving households have no access to basic health facilities. Additionally, remittances receiving families mostly prefer a private doctor and private hospitals, whereas non-receiving household usually uses government hospital facilities.

Nepal is one of the least developed but high remittances recipient countries in the world. Nepal received remittance from US$ 8.1 billion in 2016 and it is ranked 23rd among the remittance receiving countries in the world. Remittance income is one of the major sources of capital formation in the context of Nepal. It is directly related with the labour migration in a country which in return enhances foreign employment. Remittances have become a major contributing factor to increasing household income as well as country’s GDP. About 30 percent of Nepal’s GDP comes in the form of remittance money which is sent home by Nepalese working abroad and it helps to reduce country’s poverty rate. Poverty reduction took place in Nepal from 42 percent (1995/96) to 25.2 percent (2010/11). Nepal’s remittance recipients reached 31.5 percent GDP in 2015. The total amount of remittance in the country is 259 billion and among which 20 percent is internal sources, 11 percent from India and 69 percent from Gulf countries. Remittance received by the households is mainly used for daily consumption (79 percent) and remaining other purposes. Moreover, Nepal’s economic status mostly depends on remittance received which is therefore migration driven economy.

The study aims to explore the situation of foreign employment and remittance on social and economic status in households. For this purpose, a total of 116 households having migrant family members (at least one) were selected in Simta Rural Municipality of Surkhet District, Nepal. The information was collected via interview by using a structured interview schedule. Descriptive as well as inferential statistics were carried out to analyze the impact of remittance. The impact of remittances on both economic status and the social status of the sampled households is remarkable. At a time when the country’s major economic indicators are not favorable, remittances have played a vital role in maintaining macroeconomic stability and keeping the economy afloat. Though remittances sent home by migrant workers are a boon to the economy, the facilities are inadequate to back up the increasing trend of migration. Inadequate information on foreign employment, lack of skill training, and lack of assurance of safe working environment and rights of the migrant workers have obstructed foreign employment. Formulation and effective implementation of pro-poor migration policy is the need of today. The government should play a proactive role to promote foreign employment by inducting and adhering to the policy of economic diplomacy. Replicating the best practice of the region has to be endorsed in our national context for promotion and regularization of foreign employment, to encourage the official transfer of remittance, and to streamline the asset and skill of the returnees for the economic development of the country.

The Bangladesh economy is characterized by remarkable progress in international migration, resulting in a considerable inflow of remittance. Although many studies have attempted to study the effect of foreign remittances on household expenditure patterns, no effort has been made to critically analyze the effects and implications of migration and remittance flow on migrant households’ health expenditure. This article attempts to explore the effect of remittance on the health expenditure of remittance recipient households (RRHs) and the impact of the cost of treatment. Descriptive and regression analyses and standard micro-econometric techniques were applied by analyzing the nationally representative household data set of the Household Income and Expenditure Survey 2010 of Bangladesh. Results show that RRHs are more likely to spend more on health matters and more likely to have higher treatment costs than non-recipient households. Thus, remittances are significantly associated with health expenditure and the cost of treatment. International migration seems to be a household strategy characterized by a high expected return.

This research study investigated that how foreign remittances contributed to household welfare at the micro-level. The results revealed that remittances contributed progressively to household food consumption and wealth status. Remittances recipient families have good wealth status as compared to non-recipient ones. It has been found that migrants’ families are having good wealth status and own more assets. Additionally, a significant portion of remittances is used for food expenditures. The remittance recipient households are spending more on food and more food security as compared to others. Thus it is concluded that that foreign remittances have a positive relationship with household welfare.

Foreign employment has become one of the major sources of households’ income for Nepalese society. Nepal has become one of the major labors exporting country. After 1990s, remittance is playing a crucial role for foreign currency earnings and favorable impact on balance of payment situation, to reduce the number of people in the country below the poverty line and ultimately to the economic growth of the nation. This paper tries to examine the economic impact of foreign employment on remittance as well analyze the growth and trends of foreign employment and remittance on development prospective in Nepalese economy. Some descriptive statistics such as percentage, ratio, pie-chart, bar diagram and line chart are used to explain the growth and trends of foreign employment as well as situation of remittance in Nepal. Correlation and linear regression model are used to analyze the impact of foreign employment on remittance. The inflow of remittance growth rate has positive association along with significant contribution of remittance to Gross Domestic Product in Nepalese economy. Also, foreign employment has important effect on remittance. Foreign employment is one of the effective instruments for poverty alleviation and social changes.

Foreigners in different countries rely on different remittance channels for sending and receiving money. This paper analyses the privileged remittances channels that foreigners use in China to send money to their home country and to receive money in China. This paper explores foreigners’ choices of remittance channels in China and the reasons for their choices. On the other hand, the paper aims to highlight the barriers and difficulties foreigners in China experience when sending and receiving money through a formal institution. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first to investigate the remittance channels used by foreigners in China; this is the innovation of this study. Using a questionnaire, we collected data from 105 foreigners living in different cities in China; and used descriptive statistics to analyze the data. Findings show that foreigners in China willing to use formal remittances channels face several barriers and therefore rely on informal channels to carry out their transactions of sending and receiving money. To render the formal remittances channels accessible for every foreigner, banks and formal Money Transfer Operators (MTOs) in China should promote English service for foreign customers and deal with computer system problems that reverse names and surnames. In addition, they should deal with the problem of restrictions for some nationalities, reevaluate the transaction amount limits, and offer less complex administrative procedures.

Foreign employment has provided alternative opportunities for livelihood and contributed for a remittance based economy in Nepal at present. In the context of Nepal, the present study has been carried out with the overall objective to explore the roles of remittances in terms of both monetary and social capital gained from foreign employment in entrepreneurship development, particularly agribusiness enterprises owned by the returnee migrant workers in Nepal. In terms of framework, the study has followed the migration in optimistic perspective. The study has shown that the economic status of the majority of respondents has improved since beginning their agribusiness enterprises. In addition to economic status, the social status of the respondents has also seen improvements through operating their agribusiness. Remittances gained from foreign employment has been an unavoidable factor for entrepreneurship development in the country of origin. But, the important thing is; whether the remittances have been used in the productive sectors, particularly in entrepreneurship development or not. Capital investment, employment creation, research and innovation are seen the opportunities of agribusiness which can lead to the sustainable livelihood of returnee migrant workers. In turn, policy reforms and strategic project interventions from concerned authorities are critically important for the entrepreneurship and productive use of the remittance.

Nepal is the top country in Asia to receive remittance from foreign countries. Since the 1990s, there has been a tremendous increment in the remittance inflow in Nepal. It is not an exaggeration to say that by and large, the Nepalese economy has been supported by the remittance that it received from foreign countries. But unfortunately, this remittance has not played any significant role in the development of Nepal. The major portion of this remittance is spent on importing merchandise from foreign countries. It is therefore a pertinent question, is there any empirical relationship between remittance received and import of merchandise? The researcher has tried to find out this through econometric modeling. For this, time-series data of 26 years from 1993 to 2018 have been analyzed. From this analysis, it has been found that there is a significant impact of remittance on imports in Nepal.

This study aims to identify: (1) the effect of remittance of Indonesian workers on Indonesia's economic growth from 1998-2018; (2) the effect of Foreign Direct Investment on Indonesia's economic growth from 1998-2018; and (3) the effect of remittances of Indonesian workers and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on Indonesia's economic growth from 1998-2018. Based on previous studies found differences in the results of contributions. This study uses a quantitative model using remittances from Indonesian workers and FDI as independent variables, and the dependent variable is economic growth. The population of this study is all secondary data about the percentage of GDP and FDI remittances and the level of economic growth in Indonesia in 1998-2018. Tests conducted are prerequisite tests for multicollinearity, heteroscedasticity, autocorrelation, and multiple regression hypothesis testing using SPSS 21 to measure the effect of independent variables on the dependent variable partially and simultaneously. The results of this study stated that there was no significant effect on the remittance of Indonesian workers and FDI on Indonesia's economic growth from 1998-2018 because the receipt of remittances by Indonesian workers was used by households for food consumption and expenditure, not for investment or to open businesses. Meanwhile, Indonesia's FDI bureaucracy is still inefficient and there is a need for infrastructure development to increase foreign investor interest. In addition, Indonesia is still oriented towards imports rather than exports.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the presence of the Dutch disease hypothesis through examining the remittance-growth nexus using annual data for Sudan covering the period 1977-2015. The paper seeks to answer the following critical questions: what is the impact of remittance on Sudanese economy? How exchange rate influences the impact of remittance on growth? To what extent the impact of remittance on growth differs between the short and long run.Design/methodology/approachThe paper employs the autoregressive distributive lag (ARDL) technique because of its several advantages.FindingsThe ARDL results show evidence against the existence of such a hypothesis. More specifically, the results show that over time, due to the structured nature of the economy, remittances may affect economic growth negatively through several mechanisms including the depreciation rather than the appreciation of the exchange rate.Originality/valueAfter 2011 and the secession of South Sudan, Sudan lost more than 80 per cent of foreign exchange revenues which reflected in the sharp gap between the official rate and the parallel exchange rate equal to 150 per cent. To lessening this gap, the attention was given to expatriates to encourage them to transfer their remittances through official channels. Since remittance and exchange rate mechanism may affect growth positively or negatively, no study addressed this possibility. This is the first empirical study in this matter that considers both the temporary and the permanent impacts.

In Bangladesh, remittance is one of the most important economic variables in recent times as it has an impact on economic growth, helps in balancing balance of payments, increasing foreign exchange reserves, enhancing national savings and increasing velocity of money. For about two decades remittance has been contributing around 35% of export earnings. Moreover, it is greater than foreign aid and thus helps in lessening dependence on foreign aid remittance gets momentum in recent time in Bangladesh and is the second largest sector of foreign currency earnings after the garment; sector. If cost of imported raw materials is deducted from the foreign currency earning of the garments sector thanit becomes the largest sector of foreign currency earnings. Remittance earning ; increasing day by day but at a lower rate than the increase in emigration from Bangladesh due to the increasing share of unskilled or semi-skilled labors than the professionals in international migration. The share of remittance in GNI (Gross National Income) is increasing day by day. Remittance affects almost all the macro-economic indicators of a country positively. Though there are also negative sides of remittance earning e.g. brain drain, its overall contribution to Bangladesh economy is very much effective.

There is a common assumption in the literature and policymakers that migrant remittances have an essential role in improving the welfare of migrant households in the regions of origin. Payments play the same position in economic development as foreign direct investment and other capital flows. This study observes international and internal remittances in Indonesia that are being made to contribute to assessing the impact of payments on household welfare. Using longitudinal data from Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) from 2000 until 2007 on wave 3 and 4, the study will observe the impact of the development of remittance income on the household accumulated asset as a measure of well-being between recipients and non-recipients. This research uses propensity score matching (PSM) method and difference-in-difference (DID) to measure the revenue impact of remittances on household assets and compare them to non-remittance households. It was found that there are significant differences between the well-being of recipients with non-recipient remittances households.

Remittances are defined as the money transmitted from one place to another. Although remittances can also be sent in-kind, the term remittances usually refers to cash transfers. Migrant worker remittances are the part of total remittance flows that is transmitted by migrant workers, usually to their families or friends back home. Remittances are an important and stable source of income for households, in particular in developing countries. Analytical studies have shown that the flow of remittances is the least influenced by economic downturn and remains a stable source of income. Remittances have been identified as the third pillar of development as their volume is second to foreign direct investment and higher than overseas development assistance.Under the altruistic view, the migrant sends remittances home because he cares about the well being of his / her family in the home country, and the remittance satisfies the immigrants concern for the welfare of his family. Opposite to the altruistic motive is the immigrant who sends remittances to the home country mainly for economic reasons and financial self-interest. This paper tries to focus on choice between formal and informal channels which depends on a variety of factors, including the efficiency, the level of charges and exchange rates, the availability of facilities for transferring funds, the prevalence of political risks and the degree of flexibility in foreign exchange rules. It also put an insight into the size and frequency of total remittance flows determined by several factors, such as: the number of migrant workers, wage rates, economic activity in the host country/region and in the sending country/region, exchange rates, political risk, facilities for transferring funds, marital status, level of education of the migrant, whether or not accompanied by dependents, years since out migration, household income level, relative interest rate between labour-sending and receiving and peeps into its effect on the BOP of the country.

Developing countries having a stable population growth or experiencing population dividend have been earning foreign currencies by exporting manpower with varying levels of skills including skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled labors abroad. The inflow of foreign currencies from the expatriates, known as remittance, can play an important role in the economic development and might be considered as a major source of international reserves in comparison with export earnings from goods and FDI inflows respectively. Considering the importance of wage remittances in socioeconomic development in the developing economies, this study tries to investigate the impact of wage remittances on the economic development of the SAARC countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) using panel data for the period 2011 to 2020. The empirical analysis is performed employing the econometric techniques of panel data regression approach in order to examine whether the relationship between remittances and economic growth in these countries are significant or not. The findings of the study reveal that wage remittances have significant positive influence on economic development in the SAARC region, but the impact is not substantial because the remittances are mostly spent for bearing household expenditures rather than savings and domestic investments.

Worker remittances are the main source of financial flow to any economy. This study intended to scrutinize the effect of remittance inflow on Pakistan’s economy over the period 1976- 2016 by employing autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) technique; because this method has been recently developed and has different advantages as compared to time series methods. ARDL method was applied to scrutinize the long run and the short run effect of worker remittances on Pakistan’s economy. This study concluded that Pakistan’s economy is positively affected by remittance inflow, foreign direct investment and the gross domestic saving in the long run, while Pakistan’s economy negatively affected by inflation and consumption in the long run. Remittances received from immigrant support economic growth in Pakistan because remittances inflow is mostly utilized for investment purpose. To further improve the economic development of Pakistan’s economy, it is suggested that policy maker in Pakistan encourage and motivate migrants to send remittances through proper channels to Pakistan, so that these inflows of remittances be used in such profitable investments that help to improve economic growth.

This paper aims to examine the causal relationships between remittances and economic growth in 10 Southeast European developing countries, including Greece as a developed country. The research uses various econometric techniques, such as OLS, fixed-effects model, random-effects model, and Hausman-Taylor IV estimators. The regression results have shown up that there is a positive link between remittances and economic growth in 10 Southeastern European countries. Findings support the hypothesis that the remittance inflows generate economic growth in 10 Southeast European countries. Despite this, a positive relationship is also revealed between foreign direct investment, final consumption expenditure, gross capital formation, exports, and economic growth. The only exchange rate does not have a causal link on economic growth, meaning that the exchange rate does not affect economic growth. Since the remittances have a positive effect on the economic growth, and they represent a large source of external financing in Southeast European countries, the government should implement the right policies to reflect on encouraging and channelizing the remittance inflows for investment purposes, which in turn lead to a reduction of migration and unemployment. The study is original and makes effort to promote the role and significance of remittance inflows in the Southeast European developing countries, including Greece. The findings of the study might be valuable for Governments of these countries and other policymakers to channels remittances for investment purposes.

Role of workers’ remittance seems to be an imperative part of Nepalese economy for about two decades. The remittances inflow has supported to maintain the foreign reserves at the national level and consumption in household level. This paper investigates the role of remittances in export performance of Nepal employing the gravity modelling approach using annual data for the period of 26 years, from year 1993 to 2018. First, we document the scenario of remittances and export nexus, then conduct an econometric estimation for the exports flows from Nepal to its trading partners. The major finding indicates that the remittances have a statistically significant negative impact on export performance, which is largely impacted by the size of the trading partner’s economy as indicated by the estimation’s results. The study suggests for an urgent attention from policy makers to make the remittance in favor of exports by developing the export strategies. In this regard, a special focus on exporting to the rich economies may be a good way to boost the export performance of Nepal.

Nepal and Sri Lanka are recognized as labour-exporting countries. The flow of labor migration in foreign labor markets has been increasing each year. Trends of foreign labor migration started to increase in both countries after 1990. Both countries are categorized under income group countries. Foreign employment has become one of the nation's main household income and foreign exchange earnings sources. After the 1990s, Remittance contributed to foreign exchange earnings and had a favourable impact on the balance of payments, solving unemployment problems, reducing poverty, and boosting economic growth. This study aims to examine the impact of foreign employment on Remittance and the economic growth of these economies. The impact of labor migration on macroeconomic variables (balance of payments, economic growth) has been measured using statistical tools such as correction and regression models from 1995-2019. The study finds that the flow of Remittance has increased and positively impacted macroeconomic variables in the study periods. The study shows that foreign employment has become the main destination for the youths of both countries. The results showed a positive relationship between foreign employment and Remittance and a positive impact on economic growth.

Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the determinants of worker remittance of Bangladesh. Instead of traditional approach of estimating the remittance determinants, here we propose to use foreign macroeconomic indicators as a proxy determinant to avoid endogeneity. We also used panel estimation technique in our study to incorporate country specific heterogeneity of remittance inflow of Bangladesh. According our study any changes in the number of labor force, consumer price index, export, import, government expenditure and devaluation or appreciation of host countries (origin of the remittance income) currency can significantly influence the inward remittance income of Bangladesh.

This study analyzes the effects of foreign remittance on human capital by using the pooled data collected from HIES data sets, from 1998/99 to 2018/19. Two proxies (e.g., 1- mean years-of-schooling with age equal to 15 years and above, 2- mean years-of-schooling with age equal to 25 and above) are used for human capital. The panel data techniques, like Fixed effect,Random effect model, GLS regression, and Panel corrected standard error regression, are used. The results show a significant positive relationship between human capital measured in terms of both proxies and foreign remittances in overall Pakistan, but human capital in terms of the first proxy has a statistically significant association with foreign remittances in an urban and rural area, in terms of the second proxy, significant in urban, but not in rural areas. Per-capita-income has statistically significant positive effects on human capital in terms of both proxies in rural areas but does not have a significant effect in urban areas. It is recommended that the Government should formulate policies that can maximize the inflow of foreign remittances in Pakistan.

PurposeIn this paper, the authors develop and estimate a small open economy dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model with an enriched micro-founded specification to account for foreign remittances, an important source that helps bridge the trade gap in many developing and emerging market economies.Design/methodology/approachAlthough the authors’ specification provides a general frame for the analysis of the role of workers' remittances, they motivate and calibrate the model with specific focus on Pakistan, where most of the trade deficit is met through the remittance channel.FindingsThe results indicate that a negative shock to workers' remittances hampers real growth via decreased consumption and imported investment goods, while it builds pressure on exchange rate and hence worsens current account balance. These results indicate that too much dependence on workers' remittances to help meet foreign exchange deficits may potentially leave the economy in doldrums in case sizable negative shocks occur to the flow of foreign remittances.Originality/valueThe authors develop and estimate a small open economy DSGE model with an enriched micro-founded specification to account for foreign remittances, an important source that helps bridge the trade gap in many developing and emerging market economies.

The inflow of remittances is the largest source of foreign capital to the economy of Bangladesh, which has an important contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) with broader socio-economic impact. It is important to investigate the labour productivity (LP) effects of international migration and subsequent remittances inflow because, economic growth in the long run is better reflected through LP growth. Remittances can have counteractive effects on LP of the receiving countries through its interaction with labour supply and capital accumulation. We investigated the relationship between remittances and domestic LP to ascertain long run growth impact of remittances under Solow-Swan growth model using production function approach. We performed Johansen co-integration tests using data over the 1976-2014 periods. The co-integrating equation estimates suggested a positive linear relationship between remittance and LP. The findings pointed out the direct effects of remittances on LP through physical capital accumulation. The findings of the study are a vital contribution to the empirical literatures of remittances and economic growth, which is important for policy options.Progressive Agriculture 29 (1): 33-44, 2018

The amount of remittances to developing counties, defined as the flow of monetary and non-monetary goods, has increased globally and has surpassed the amount of money spent on foreign aid in these developing countries. The impact of remittances on households’ purchasing power has been studied; however, its link to food security status is yet to be explored. This paper quantitatively analyses the relationship between food security status (measured using the Food Insecurity Experience Scale) and the receipt of domestic/ international or both remittances on households in sub- Saharan Africa. Data are derived from the Gallup World Poll from the years 2014-2017. Multinomial logistic regression models and binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to analyze the data. Results showed that remittance recipients had significantly higher household incomes (especially if the remittance was coming internationally and domestically), lived with significantly more household members (7 or more members), and were more likely to be separated (including divorced or widowed). Households that received domestic remittances had significantly higher odds of being food insecure than households receiving no remittances. Conversely, households receiving remittances internationally or a combination of domestic and international remittances had significantly lower odds of food insecurity compared to non-receivers. This study found that receiving remittances affect the food security status of people living in SSA countries.

Remittances play an important role in the economies of remittance-reliant Armenia and Georgia as they alleviate poverty and provide foreign currency. In addition to such positive contributions, remittances can produce harmful effects on the economies that receive them. The author investigates the Dutch disease effect of remittances in these small economies by measuring the impact of remittances on real exchange rates and exports by applying a vector autoregressive model. The study covers the period 2000 Q1–2019 Q4 and analyses the relationship between the remittances, real effective exchange rate, exports, and gross domestic product. The results indicate that remittances produce appreciating effects on real exchange rates in both countries but a week negative effect on exports only in Armenia.

Given their political incentives, governments in more autocratic polities can strategically channel unearned government and household income in the form of foreign aid and remittances to finance patronage, which extends their tenure in political office. I substantiate this claim with duration models of government turnover for a sample of 97 countries between 1975 and 2004. Unearned foreign income received in more autocratic countries reduces the likelihood of government turnover, regime collapse, and outbreaks of major political discontent. To allay potential concerns with endogeneity, I harness a natural experiment of oil price–driven aid and remittance flows to poor, non–oil producing Muslim autocracies. The instrumental variables results confirm the baseline finding that authoritarian governments can harness unearned foreign income to prolong their rule. Finally, I provide evidence of the underlying causal mechanisms that governments in autocracies use aid and remittances inflows to reduce their expenditures on welfare goods to fund patronage.

Abstract In the context of the current recession in industrialized countries and the resultant dim prospects for exports from small Pacific island countries, mobilization of foreign exchange earnings assumes considerable importance. The dependency of Samoa and Tonga on inward remittances is well known, as the two Polynesian island countries in recent years have been among the first top ten remittance recipient countries of the world. This paper examines the long-run nexus between economic growth and inward remittances during a three-decade period (1981-2008). Recent decade has witnessed the growing importance of remittances as a source of foreign income for many developing countries. Thus, as the value of remittances around the world increases, many researchers attempt to analyze the remittances’ effects on economic performance. Yet, real effect of remittances on economic growth rate is still controversial issue in the literature. Therefore, main objective of this study is to analyze the linkage between economic growth rates and remittance inflows into eight largest recipient countries of the global remittances by employing panel data analysis for the period 1990-2015. Our findings reveal that there is no significant relationship between remittances and growth. Yet, the study has empirically proved that growth is positively associated with gross capital formations and GDP per capita while it is negatively related with inflation and openness index.

The rural out-migration for labour of Nepal is a common livelihood strategy at household level. The paper tries to assess the utilization of rural-out migrants’ remittance at household level in Khanigaun Village of Resunga Municipality, Gulmi District. The study is mainly based on primary data and utilized mixed method. The primary information collected through household survey and focus group discussions techniques. 120 sample households were selected by using purposive sampling method. The targeted households were those where at least one family member of household who are working in the foreign country or who worked foreign country and have returned now as a labour migration. The data revealed that the major bulk of remittances were used for consumption purposes. Though, household investment in business or traditional productive sectors and savings were rather small, but remittances were also seen as important financial means for investment in human capital (i.e. education, health and hygiene), housing and land purchase. The importance of the repayment of the cost of migration should not be underestimated. Finally, the study concludes that most of migrant families had improved their living standard to some extent from the remittance money so far, either they used productive or not is in the debate. Purpose: Mostly developing countries are not receiving the remittances with same speed as compared to workers’ outflow. This cumbersome situation allows developing countries to go to external source of funding (debt) for economic and financial development-FD. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the nexus between FD and remittances in Pakistan for the period 1976-2015. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study utilizes the time series annual data for the period 1976-2015. Data were taken from different sources like world bank data source and different economic surveys of Pakistan. To evaluate the long run relationships between FD and remittances, Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) strategy is utilized. Findings: The empirical results indicate that remittances have a significant positive impact on FD (M2/GDP) except for CPS/GDP measure of FD which has insignificant positive coefficient. Implications/Originality/Value: Most of previous literature measured FD with the ratio of money supply to GDP (M2/GDP) however, the current study measured with two indicators i.e. the ratio of money supply to GDP (M2/GDP) and the ratio of bank credit to GDP (CPS/GDP). This is the main contribution in the literature. The study recommends that remittances channelize financial segment of the country in augmented manner and government should encourage Pakistani expatriates to send the remittance through formal sources (e.g. banks). Financial institutions and intermediaries working in Pakistan should exaggerate the recruitment of remittances with the purpose to make them significant source for loanable funds. In addition to this, the concern department should simplify the procedure for sending remittances.

This research paper examines the contribution of remittance on socio-economic development of Nepal. The specific objectives are to study the trends, patterns and diversifications of foreign labor migration. This study uses entirely secondary data. The majority of Nepali families earn their income through foreign employment. Nepal has about 200 years’ long history of receiving international remittance, as a sum of money transferred from foreign migrant workers to individual or their families in their homeland. The Gulf Cooperation Council and Malaysia are the major destination countries for Nepalese workers. The report of National Planning Commission 2020/21 shows Nepal received NPR 961.05 billions remittance from 128 different countries constituting 22.5 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The report of economic survey 2020/21 shows annual per capita income of Nepal reached 1, 381 US dollars in 2021, with an increment of about 11 percent to the previous year. Migration and remittance have contributed to increase the per capita income of Nepal over the years along with significant change in the social development.

Except for emergencies and for technical assistance for raising skills and institution building, foreign aid to Pacific island countries (PICs) for budgetary support has been phased out since the late 1990s. Because of the small sized domestic markets, foreign direct investment (FDI) is small and is confined to development of tourism infrastructure. On the other hand, inward remittances received from the rising number of islanders migrating overseas for work are increasing, far exceeding aid and FDI. However, influence of remittances on economic growth depends on financial sector development (FSD) for mobilizing the savings from the remittance receipts for domestic investment. This paper assesses the role of FSD in the nexus between remittances and economic growth through a panel study of five major PICs, namely Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu. The study findings show that the ongoing efforts for strengthening FSD have to be stepped up by focusing on financial inclusion through spread of branchless banking and promotion of information and communication technology.

ABSTRACT Remittance as a major source of foreign currency to the developing nation has become a substantial component of making current account surplus in the balance of payments. It is argued that many workers from Nepal going abroad for employment are no doubt young, energetic, laborious and enthusiastic. They do hard work for earning large remittance income to support their families. However, the downside of remittances reflects the view that remaining young generation for long time outside without family may increase their vulnerability and ultimately they will have a tendency to leave their homeland. Thus, in order to recover the loss of economically active labor force to the domestic economy, they should be encouraged to come back again with skilled knowledge for utilizing their savings and working experience for development to the productive areas in accordance with the priority of the national development plans. Remittances are the funds sent by individuals to their home country from the host country and are the main source of foreign funding after FDI. Remittances are a crucial source of subsistence for the countries that are still in developing phase. Due to of the increasing scale and effect on the origin country, the international remittance flows into the developing country have gained the attention of numerous analysts from all over the world. This study examines the role of foreign remittances in poverty alleviation utilizing the panel data set of Asian countries, precisely nine developing countries. For the dependent variable this study uses poverty gap and the independent variables are Remittances as percentage of GDP, Per capita GDP, External debt as percentage of GNI and Trade openness as percentage of GDP. The findings reveal that foreign emittances have a significant role in alleviating poverty gap. The results of the random effect model showed that a 1% increase in international remittances as percentage of GDP leads to a decrease of 65.932% in poverty gap at $1.90 poverty line in the sample developing economies from 1990-2019. In addition, the results indicate, trade openness and per capita GDP decrease poverty and external debt seems to increase poverty.

The subject of the paper is the analysis of economic and social advantages of remittance inflows from the Serbian diaspora. Remittances are important for domestic economy and people for several reasons. First and foremost, these remittances are at a high level because of a large number of Serbs that have emigrated in the decades behind us. Even though the exact amount of these remittances cannot be precisely calculated, due to the fact that a great portion of remittances comes to Serbia via informal channels, remittance inflows can have positive effects on many economic aspects of receiving countries, especially in the case of transitioning countries that have gone through difficult periods of economic and political crises, war crisis and devastations. Inflows from diaspora can affect the reduction of poverty, development of economic entities, and even the exchange rate of the country and economic development as a whole, and the diaspora can influence the improvement of political climate and economic relationships with foreign countries. In this paper, we wanted to examine the correlation and strength of the relationship (if any) between the trends of Serbia's GDP and remittances, as well as the relationship between GDP per capita in Serbia and remittances. The correlation procedure was performed in the IBM SPSS 21 program, and the World Bank data were used as a basis. It was concluded that the trend ratio of the GDP of Serbia and remittances is characterized by a positive correlation which was observed in the trend of the GDP of Serbia and remittances.

During the past three decades, the Bangladesh economy has been characterized by higher economic growth, and record levels of remittance income from both foreign and domestic sources. By using household data, and ordinary least squares (OLS) and quantile regressions, this study explores the factors that affect house prices in Bangladesh. Particular attention is given to the role of domestic and foreign remittance incomes. The results reveal that both domestic and foreign remittance incomes have positive and significant effects on housing prices in Bangladesh. The results from this study indicate that house prices and estimated prices of housing attributes may reflect the fact that housing attributes are not priced the same across a given distribution of house prices. Furthermore, the quantile regression shows that unlike the single OLS estimate, parameter estimates differ along the distribution of house prices per square feet.
