Within the steppe-like western slope of the Peruvian Andes forest patches (dry cloud forests) occur from Ecuador to 13°S. Eight localities were studied between Huamba (4°41'S) and Zárate (11°55'S). I examined impacts of thinning on bird population densities and habitat use in Appalachian mixed-hardwood forests during 1984 and 1985 at three thinned and three unthinned stands in the Jefferson National Forest, southwestern Virginia. Densities of shrubs, saplings, trees, and snags, canopy and ground cover, and foliage volume were the structural variables most influenced by thinning. However, the conservation value of SF remains controversial, and is dependent on many site- and landscape-scale factors, such as habitat age and isolation. The aim of this thesis was to assess the role that SF can play in conserving forest bird communities in central Panama. Group selection has recently emerged as an alternative silvicultural system to clearcutting in Appalachian hardwood forests, but there is little, if any, information on the effects of group selection on wildlife. Thus, I studied and compared the effects of group selection and clearcut openings on wildlife in the Jefferson National Forest, Virginia. Breeding birds were censused 1 year before and 2 years after harvesting at 20 group selection openings, 4 clearcut openings, 18 sites in the mature even-aged forest adjacent to the openings, and 29 control sites. A moderately intense, broadcast, understory, prescribed burn in 3 previously unburned ponderosa pine stands in southeastern Arizona felled or consumed 50% of all ponderosa pine snags ≥ 15 cm dbh. Large moderately decayed snags were most susceptible to burning. Large snags in the early stages of decay were preferred as nest sites by cavity-nesting birds. Numbers of live woody plants were reduced by 40%, mortality was greatest among shrubs and small trees. Canopy volume was reduced by 19%, the greatest impact was below 5 m. The forest avian community of the Ray Roberts Greenbelt (Denton Co., Texas) was characterized for two years using point count station sampling, from fall 1998 to summer 2000. Richness data for both breeding seasons were correlated with two-spatial metrics: width of the riparian forest and distance to the nearest edge.
