En este trabajo se analizan los años iniciales del sacerdote Francisco Otal en las arquidiócesis de Lima y La Plata. Su carrera eclesiástica, que lo condujo de doctrinero en San Francisco de Chiuchiu hasta racionero de la catedral de La Plata, estuvo precedida por una trayectoria como músico y cantor, facilitada por la fuerza interpretativa de su registro como capón tiple. Fue precisamente este "oficio de ángeles" en que acercó a Francisco Otal tanto a las capillas catedralicias de Lima y La Plata como a los prelados y miembros de los cabildos eclesiásticos. Ahora bien, su primer nombramiento en Lima, en 1613, estuvo muy cercano y coincidió con los años iniciales del proceso de extirpación de idolatrías. Francisco Otal conoció a sus principales protagonistas, entre ellos al arzobispo Bartolomé Lobo Guerrero y a otras autoridades eclesiásticas, diáconos y extirpadores de terreno como Francisco de Ávila, que seguramente le predicaron esta forma de evangelización que se movía de la persuasión a la compulsión. A Francisco de Ávila lo volvería a encontrar en La Plata, en 1618, al igual que a los discursos de extirpación de idolatría que incorporó el primer sínodo platense (1619-1690). Estas experiencias estuvieron en la base de su actividad de extirpación en Atacama y también le permitieron definir nuevas estrategias de posicionamiento en el interior de las redes eclesiásticas de La Plata. Abstract This paper analyzes the early years of the priest Francisco Otal in the Archdiocese of Lima and La Plata. His ecclesiastical career, which led him to doctrinero in San Francisco de Chiuchiu to racionero of the Cathedral of La Plata, was preceded by a career as a musician and singer, helped by the interpretative strength og his record as tiple capon. It was this «officio of angels» which approached to Francisco de Otal to both the cathedral chapels of Lima and La Plata as to the prelates and members of church councils. As a consequence, his first appointment in Lima, in 1613, was very close and coincided with the early years of the process of extirpation of idolatry. Francisco Otal met its main protagonists, including the Archbishop Bartolomé Lobo Guerrero and other ecclesiastical authorities, deacons and field ground as Francisco de Avila that will surely preached this form of evangelization moving from persuasion to compulsion. Francisco de Avila met him agin in La Plata, in 1618, as well as speeches rejecting of idolatry which incorporated the first platense synod (1619-1690). Both experiences were the basis for its activity in Atacama rejecting and also allowed him to define new strategies for positioning himself within church networks of La Plata.

Presentamos uno de los episodios totalmente desconocidos de la Capilla Real de Granada durante parte del siglo XVII. Se trata de la conversión del espejo-custodia de la reina Isabel en relicario para un supuesto clavo de la cruz de Cristo, en contra del parecer de los capellanes reales, quienes lucharán para que retornara a ostensorio, sin marginar el clavo para el que encargarán un busto de Ecce Homo a Pedro de Mena (1628-1688). El artista, según lo hasta ahora conocido, al irse a Málaga, en 1658, no lo había hecho, realizándolo Bernardo Francisco de Mora (1614-1684).

Francisco Gómez de Sandoval y Rojas (1553-1625), V marqués de Dénia y I duque de Lerma, emprendió una importante transformación de su palacio valenciano de Dénia desde no mucho antes de 1611 y hasta los comienzos de los años 20 del siglo XVII. Las reformas constructivas y las labores de equipamiento de la casa, que se intensificaron entre 1616 y 1618, estuvieron destinadas a dar alojamiento digno al rey Felipe III en la frustrada visita real a Dénia para la celebración de Cortes del Reino de València. Así, a partir de una vista desconocida de Dénia y documentación de archivo inédita pretendemos redefinir las cronologías de unas arquitecturas prácticamente desaparecidas y poco estudiadas, reconstruir los espacios que las conformaban y determinar la sistematización de bienes que se custodiaron en su interior y exterior.

One of the most extraordinary stories to have survived from seventeenthcentury county Clare is that of Dermot McBruodin, the so-called ‘mad friar’ of Ennis. This story has received the attention of antiquaries and historians and has come down to us primarily in translated excerpts from the original Latin text. This article provides an account of the life and ministry of the Clare-born Franciscan friar, Dermot McBruodin, who returned to Ireland from studies in Spain in 1575. The author of this life was a kinsman and confrère who published it as part of a larger work in 1669. Presented here is a full translation of the life of Dermot McBruodin which details his arrest, trial and acquittal in 1603, along with a contextualisation of his life and activities. Also presented is a discussion about the author’s motivation for recording McBruodin’s life, which was written some 50 years after the friar’s death.

The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) recently revised the techniques it uses to collect data on qualitative areas of performance that are difficult to measure, such as station cleanliness, train cleanliness, graffiti removal, and restroom cleanliness. This paper documents the methodological changes implemented by BART and compares the accuracy of the new and the old techniques. Empirical evidence is presented demonstrating that the new data collection methods yield more reliable and objective statistics than the old system of measurement. Findings from this study suggest that reliable measurement of qualitative areas is possible. When carefully collected, these kinds of measurements can become an important component of an organization’s overall strategy to monitor and improve service quality.

Drawing on the ideas of Gérard Genette, this article argues for the value of reading translations as “hypertexts,” or as works grafted onto earlier texts (“hypotexts”), on the basis of the intriguing case study of The Admirable Life of the Holy Virgin S. Catharine of Bologna (1621), translated by Catherine Magdalen Evelyn of the Gravelines Poor Clares. Little-known today despite Evelyn’s importance as the most prolific female translator of the early Stuart period, this publication sublimates the voice of the translator through its laconic paratextual materials and its misattribution of Evelyn’s work to another nun. In spite of this carefully engineered authorial opacity, the stakes of Evelyn’s translation become clearer when it is read as part of a hypertextual system of Franciscan writings published in English, French, Italian, and Portuguese over the course of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. An analysis of how her text is grafted onto this series of hypotexts through bibliography, intertextuality, and translation results in a detailed, albeit speculative, account of Evelyn’s motivations for reading, translating, and publishing The Admirable Life. This seemingly modest publication is thus revealed as a rich hypertext that participated in a wider European project to chronicle the history of the Franciscan order. A concluding discussion of hypertextuality in early modern England briefly gestures more broadly toward the relevance of this method for studies of Renaissance literature.

Resumen Este artículo indaga por las variantes introducidas por Francisco de Quevedo en dos sonetos del Heráclito cristiano (1613), los famosos salmos XVII y XIX, cuyas versiones finales aparecen en la musa Polimnia de El Parnaso español (1648). Con el análisis comparativo de las incidencias temáticas, estilísticas y estructurales de las variantes, se concluye la existencia de un criterio estético común en los movimientos operados por el poeta. Con ello, se detalla por qué las variantes aportan una mejoría de ciertas directrices expresivas ya presentes en las versiones primigenias.

The rationale behind the current research and development of interface standards for the public transit industry is explored. Recent efforts to define an information systems architecture for public transit have not sufficiently discussed the underlying need for information system standards and what impacts these standards might have on the transit industry as well as on vendors. Both advantages and disadvantages to the development of these standards are identified. For public transit agencies, there appears to be a well-reasoned yet unsupported belief that interface standards will be beneficial for systems integration. To explore the impacts for vendors, a survey was developed and fielded to learn about the characteristics of products and vendor attitudes toward interface standards. The results, though not conclusive, suggest that vendors are willing to consider standards; however, needed product customization and more comprehensive systems are important factors weighing against open interface standards. Also reported are three case studies of recent technology applications in the San Francisco Bay Area in which experiences with technical system design and systems integration are described. These case studies strongly suggest that key factors such as market timing, vendor-agency communication, and “learning by doing” affect the development of interface requirements and standards for the transit industry.

AbstractBorn in Hanau, Germany, in 1614, Franciscus (Dele Boë) Sylvius received his medical doctor diploma from Basel University in 1637 and became Professor of Practical Medicine at Leiden University in 1658. One of the founders of medical biochemistry, Sylvius was also an outstanding anatomopathologist, with contributions ranging from the first description of the pulmonary tubercles to that of the lateral fissure of the brain. Thanks to Sylvius, a gifted teacher and one of the greatest physicians of his time, Leiden became a major European medical training center. He died in 1772 after having served asRector Magnificusat Leiden University.

Los tratados sobre las vidas de santos o en proceso de santidad se multiplicaron en la iglesia católica en el barroco usados como medio de propaganda del nuevo ideario tridentino frente al protestantismo, divulgando vidas de personalidades destacadas por su estudio de la Palabra de Dios, su práctica de sacramentos, oración y obras de caridad. Este fue el caso de santo Tomás de Villanueva que fue arzobispo de Valencia desde 1545 hasta 1555 y que fue beatificado en 1618 y canonizado años más tarde. El presente trabajo presenta las biografías del padre agustino Miguel Salon y de Francisco de Quevedo en torno a la vida del santo de 1620, con informaciones extraídas de las declaraciones de dicho proceso y con la finalidad de difundir a todo el pueblo cristiano las excelencias de la vida de santo Tomás de Villanueva como modelo y ejemplo.

We reconstructed historical fire regimes and contemporary and historical stand structures in two stands of ponderosa pine–mixed conifer forests on the San Francisco Peaks in northern Arizona, USA. Thirty-four fire-scarred specimens recorded 256 fires from the EAST and WEST study sites. Fires were recorded between 1739 and 1903 for the EAST site and between 1548 and 1947 for the WEST site. The mean fire return interval (MFI: ≥25% scarred) for the period 1690–1892 was 10 years with a range of 3–21 years for the EAST site. The WEST site MFI (period 1612–1876) was 9 years with a range of 3–21 years. Seasonal patterns of fire occurrence showed that the majority of fires burned during the summer months. Fire interval (years) means, variances and distributions between the EAST and WEST sites were not statistically different from one another for the common analysis period of 1690–1876. Historically, both the EAST and WEST sites were dominated by ponderosa pine, with scattered individuals of Douglas-fir, limber pine and white fir, with tree densities that ranged from 43 to 60 trees per hectare (TPH). Current forest composition has shifted from fire-tolerant ponderosa pine to less fire-tolerant, more shade-tolerant species, with tree densities ranging from 928 to over 1700 TPH. We suggest that the dramatic structural changes recorded at our study sites occurred since fire regime disruption.

El presente artículo desvela la identidad y autoría de un Retrato de Caballero desconocido que estuvo atribuido al círculo de Velázquez. En base a la peculiar fisionomía del retratado y al parecido con otros retratos conocidos, se identifica al personaje con Don Francisco Fernández de la Cueva, VIII duque de Alburquerque (1619-1676), Virrey de Nueva España (1653-1660) y de Sicilia (1668-1670). Alburquerque estuvo en Flandes entre 1640 y 1643, periodo durante el cual habría sido retratado por los hermanos Michaelina y Charles Wautier, a quienes se restituye la pintura tanto por razones estilísticas e históricas como por la evidencia de los restos de una firma en la parte superior izquierda del lienzo. El texto traza la carrera de este personaje ligado a la historia de España, Flandes, México y Sicilia, destacando su inclinación a las Bellas Artes y adentrándose en su polémica participación en la Batalla de Rocroi en 1643.

La influencia de la obra y doctrina de Francisco Suárez (Granada, 1548-Lisboa, 1617) en la conformación del pensamiento moderno ha sido ampliamente estudiada en áreas como la filosofía política y del derecho, la metafísica o la epistemología. Sin embargo, la filosofía moral de Suárez, en concreto aquella que, como él mismo explica, habrá de servir de base a sus tratados de teología moral, está todavía por analizar. El objetivo de este trabajo es traer a luz algunos aspectos de la teoría suareciana sobre la causalidad final en los agentes libres, confrontando su doctrina sobre la causalidad del fin en dos comentarios, escritos en distintos períodos, a las cuestiones I-IIae de la Suma de Teología de Tomás de Aquino: el manuscrito inédito De beatitudine (1579) y el tratado De ultimo fine hominis, publicado por Baltasar Álvares (1628). La cuestión aquí analizada —qué significa actuar por un fin— se asume como un instrumento heurístico para dar a conocer sea estas dos fuentes estudiadas, sea el interés filosófico de las doctrinas de Suárez a respecto de la causalidad final. Las conclusiones apuntan a los siguientes aspectos: i) la proximidad, aun con dudas, de Suárez a la doctrina tomista de la causalidad del fin, en el comentario de 1579; ii) la asunción parcial de la doctrina tomista en cuanto a la función del intelecto en el actuar libre, y la afirmación de que el locus finis es la voluntad, en el comentario de 1628. Trabajando con estos matices hemos querido establecer algunos puntales de encuentro que permitan hacer visibles los puentes que emergen entre una tradición escolástica que enfrenta una nueva imagen del hombre, y la filosofía moral inmediatamente posterior que despojando aquella de su fundamento teológico, avanza con paso firme hacia la modernidad.

The success of the Counter-Reformation in Ireland following the restoration of the Catholic hierarchy was a remarkable achievement. Between 1618 and 1630 Rome made a staggering nineteen episcopal appointments in a kingdom that was ruled by a Protestant king. Documenting the achievements of the initial period only paints half the picture, however. The implementation of the Tridentine reforms and the thorny issue of episcopal authority brought the religious orders into a head-on collision with the secular clergy. This protracted dispute lasted for a decade, most notably in the diocese of Dublin where an English secular priest, Paul Harris, led a hostile attack on the Franciscan archbishop, Thomas Fleming. The longevity of the feud, though, owed at least as much to the intervention of Lord Deputy Sir Thomas Wentworth as it did to the internal tensions of the Catholic Church. Despite Wentworth’s influential role, he has been largely written out of the conflict. This article addresses the lacunae in the current historiography and argues that the lord deputy’s interference was a decisive factor in exacerbating the hostilities between the secular and regular clergy in early seventeenth-century Ireland.

AbstractThe closeness of a work from Rubens' studio in the English Royal Collection, known as Equestrian Portrait of a Knight of the Golden Fleece (Fig. I, Note 1), to two equestrian portraits painted by Van Dyck during his stay in Genoa, from 1621 to 1626 (Figs. 2, 3, Note 2) has led to the identification of the sitter. A number of other pictures from the circle of Rubens and Van Dyck show horses and/or riders in related poses and the dates on some of them reveal them to have been painted before Van Dyck's portraits. This applies to The Riding School by or after Rubens, which is generally dated 1610-12 (Fig. 4, Note 3), a Paradise Landscape by Jan Brueghel of 1613 (Note 4) and Sight dated 1617 by the same artist (Fig.5, Note 5), which features a horseman known as Archduke Albert. A number of undated paintings inspired by the same model include six supposed to be of Archduke Albert (Notes 6, 10), three by Casper de Crayer (Fig. 6, Note 13) and eguestrian portraits of Louis XIII (Note 14) and Ladislaw IV of Poland. Thus it seems likely that these followers of Rubens', Van Dyck included, based themselves on one and the same equestrian portrait by their teacher. Since Van Dyck almost certainly painted the two equestrian portraits in Genoa during his stay in that city, his model or a replica of it must also have been there between 1621 and 1626. In fact, probably at the request of his patrons (Note 17), he often used models by Rubens, who had worked in Genoa for a time in 1606 (Note 16). However, his two equestrian portraits are not based on the only Genoese one by Rubens now known, that of the Marchese Doria (Fig. 7, Note 18), which is very different and has a liveliness quite, unlike Van Dyck's quiet static compositions. The equestrian portrait in the English Royal Collection was bought by George I in 1723 as a Rubens. The sitter is clad in the Spanish costume of the early 17 th century while the towers in the background could be those of Antwerp (Note 36). The sitter has been identified as the Archduke Albert, but he actually bears no resemblance to other portraits of the Archduke, who was also much older than this at the time of Ruberas' stay in Genoa in 1606. The most likely candidate is Ambrogio Spinola (Note 32) , the statesman and general, of whom both Rubens and Van Dyck painted more than one portrait. Spinola was commander of the Spanish troups in the Southern Netherlands, a friend of Rubens and Knight of the Golden Fleece, and he also came from Genoa, where this portrait could have been painted during a visit he made to the city in 1606 (Notes 33, 34). Stylistically too the portrait seems to fit in with the series of portraits painted by Rubens in Genoa in that year. The physiognomy of the sitter is certainly close to that of the known portraits of Spinola (Figs. 8-1, Note 35), while the details of Spinola's life also support the identification. Spinola (1569-1630), who was Marquis of Sesto and Venafro, belonged to one of the group of closely related, families of bankers who held key positions in Genoa. He arrived in the Netherlands around 1602 at the head of a large and unusually well-trained body of troops. In 1603 he provided funds to prevent a mutiny among the Spanish troups and after his capture of Ostend in 1604 he was appointed second in command to Archduke Albert. He was made a Knight of the Golden Fleece on I March 1605 and in the same year he was put in charge of military finances. From 1606 until his departure for Spain in 1628 he was superintendent of the military treasury and' mayordomo mayor' to the Archdukes Albert and Isabella. After the death of Albert in 1621 he became principal adviser to Isabella and thus the most powerful man in the Spanish Netherlands. His amiable character brought him many friends, even among the ranks of the enemy, notably the Princes Maurice and Frederick Henry, with whom he had a great deal of contact during the Twelve Years Truce. It was probably one of them who bought the Portrait of Spinola by Van Miereveld (Fig. 8). After a disappointing mission to Spain in 1628, Spinola was relieved of his command of the Army of Flanders and put in charge of the Spanish troups in Lombardy. He died in his castle in Piedmont in 1630. During the years 1603-5 and later Spinola made several visits to Madrid, where he will undoubtedly have met the powerful Duke of Lerma and probably also seen the equestrian portrait that Rubens painted of him in 1603 (Fig. 12, Note 39). He must also have known of the portraits Rubens painted in Genoa in 1606, since at least three and probably five of them are of members of the Spinola family, while there survives a letter to Rubens from Paolo Agostino Spinola on the subject of portraits (Note 40). All this makes it likely that Spinola would have had his own Portrait painted too and that Rubens may well have painted his first portrait of the man who was to become his lifelong friend as early as 1606. Although Rubens was sometimes irritated by Spinola's lack of interest in his work (Note 41) , he admired him greatly (Note 42). He cultivated Spinola's friendship after his return to Antwerp in 1608 and will doubtless have introduced Van Dyck to him. Van Dyck later painted more than twenty pictures for the five Spinola palaces (Note 43) in Genoa and his work also became known in Madrid via Spinola and his son-in-law Don Diego Felipez Messia Guzman de Legañes, who owned many works by Van Dyck (Note 44). The presumed equestrian portrait of Spinola was much copied, as were other portraits of him by Rubens. Spinola was admired all over Europe and that may have been why other commanders and princes wanted to have themselves portrayed in the same way. The original or a replica may have hung in Spirtola's palace in Brussels, where the first to have seen it would have been Archduke Albert, which may explain the many equestrian portraits of him by Rubens' followeers which were based on it. Another possibility is that Rubens himself may have painted an equestrian portrait of the Archduke very similar to that of Spinola around 1610, but that this is no longer known. Caspar de Crayer of Brussels, a friend, though not a pupil of Rubens, was also influenced by the Spinola equestrian portrait. Furthermore, when he was invited to paint a set of equestrian portraits for the Huis ten Bosch, he sent the young Antwerp painter Thomas Willeboirts Bosschaert to The Hague in his place (Note 46) and it was in this way that Rubens' model came to the Northern Netherlands, where it was copied only once, by Isaac Isacsz. in his equestrian portrait of William the Silent (Note 47). The equestrian portrait of Sigmund III of Poland (Fig. 13), a cousin of Archduke Albert, could also have been painted in Van Dyck's studio in Genoa, which was probably visited by his son Prince Ladislaw in 1624 (Note 48). This picture too still owes much to Rubens' model which Van Dyck used again ten years later for his equestrian portraits of Charles I of England (Fig. 14, Note, 50) and Francisco de Moncada (Note 51).

RESUMENCon el presente trabajo se pretende, sobre el soporte bibliográfico que registra la trayectoria del gremio sartorial, aportar un enfoque inédito proporcionado por las fuentes archivísticas y documentales para la época: la identificación, relación y análisis de la función ejercida por los sastres de los reyes y de aquellos vinculados al estamento nobiliario en la horquilla cronológica seleccionada, comprendida entre los años 1450 y 1615, fecha del primer y último documento trabajados en este sentido. Esta línea de investigación nos permitirá descubrir desde individuos con deseos de medrar en la escala social, como los sastres andantes y estantes en corte, hasta un subgrupo más consolidado marcado por la continua insatisfacción de las deudas por parte de la nobleza. Secciones archivísticas como el Registro General del Sello, Cámara de Castilla, Registro de Ejecutorias o Consejo de Estado, pertenecientes a variados archivos estatales españoles, nos servirán para proporcionar una nutrida nómina, en relación diacrónica, de los sastres vinculados a la Corona castellana en este periodo. Por otro lado, se destacará el proteccionismo regio hacia la figura de este artesano cercano a las élites de poder, ejemplificándolo en figuras concretas. Finalmente se apuntarán las posibilidades de la documentación analizada para conocer en profundidad, y de la mano de fuentes históricas primarias, aspectos de la historia del vestido regio y del de los empleados de la corte.PALABRAS CLAVE: sastres, reyes, nobles, Corona de Castilla, 1450-1615ABSTRACTThe aim of the present work is, on the basis of the literature that records the trajectory of the sartorial profession, to offer a new approach provided by the archival and documentary sources of the time: the identification, relation and analysis of the function exerted by tailors to kings and to those linked to the nobility. This line of research will allow us to discover people ranging from individuals seeking to climb the social ladder, such as tailors living at the court, to a more consolidated subgroup marked by the continued non-payment of debts by the nobility. Archival sections such as the General Registry of the Seal, Chamber of Castile, Registry of Executives or Council of State, belonging to various Spanish state archives, will provide us with a long list, in diachronic terms, of the tailors linked to the Castilian Crown between 1450 and 1615, the dates of the first and last documents used for this purpose. Furthermore, I shall highlight royal protectionism vis-à-vis the figure of this craftsman close to the elites, offering specific examples.
