In this study, freeze vacuum drying (FVD), hot air drying (AD), and FVD combined with AD (FVD-AD) were used to dry kiwifruits. Dried products were analyzed comprehensively on their sensory quality, active components, moisture mobility, odors, and microstructure. Results showed that the FVD-AD saved time by 38.22% compared with FVD while maintaining an acceptable product quality. The antioxidant properties of FVD-AD were lower than those of FVD but significantly higher than those of AD. Moreover, compared with FVD products, FVD-AD products were moderately hard (5252.71 ± 33.53 g) and improved in color, bound water, and microstructure. Additionally, FVD-AD consumed lesser drying time and energy than FD. According to cluster analysis, the odors of FVD-AD products were similar to those of the fresh ones. Principal component analysis of physicochemical and drying cost indicated that FVD-AD was a promising processing technique for functional kiwifruit snacks.

Objective: Our recent series of laboratory- and large-scale experiments confirmed that under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, sodium metabisulfite (SMB) was effective in preserving nutrients and antioxidant capacity of highly perishable fruit and vegetable discards (FVD). Hence, the purpose of this study was to examine how partial inclusion of SMB-treated FVD in total mixed ration (TMR) influences in vitro ruminal fermentation, whole-tract digestibility, nitrogen metabolism, blood metabolites, and voluntary feed intake of sheep.Methods: The FVD were mixed thoroughly with 6 g SMB/kg wet biomass and kept outdoors under aerobic conditions for 7 days. Four TMRs including four levels of SMB-treated FVD (as-fed basis) at 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% (equaling to 0%, 1.9%, 3.8%, and 5.7% on dry matter basis, respectively), were prepared as replacement for corn grain. The ruminal fermentation metabolites were studied using an in vitro gas production test. Four mature male Corriedale sheep were assigned at random to the 4 diets for two separate sub-experiments; i) digestibility trial with four 21-d periods, and ii) voluntary feed intake trial with four 28-d periods.Results: Inclusion of SMB-treated FVD in the TMR tended to quadratically increase partitioning factor. No effect was seen on total-tract digestibility of organic matter, ether extract, crude protein, and acid detergent fiber, except for neutral detergent fiber digestibility that tended to linearly increase with increasing SMB-treated FVD in the TMR. The progressive increase of FVD preserved with SMB in the diet had no effect on nitrogen metabolism. Treatment had no effect on serum antioxidant capacity and blood metabolites assayed. Voluntary feed intake was not impaired by inclusion of SMB-treated FVD in the TMR.Conclusion: It appears that FVD preserved with SMB can be safely incorporated into TMR as replacement of corn grain without impairment of nutrient metabolism and feed intake.

Flame vapor deposition (FVD) process can be used to prepare the tungsten oxide thin film which has photocatalytic activity at visible light. The FVD process is fast and economical to prepare thin film on substrate comparing to other processes. Various nanostructured thin films could be easily prepared by controlling several process parameters in FVD. One-dimensional (1-D) nanostructures with high surface area also can be prepared reproducibly. The tungsten wire precursor was oxidized and vaporized in flame to be deposited onto the substrate. The nanostructure shapes can be adjusted by controlling nucleation and growth rates of tungsten oxide vapor on substrate. In this study, nanostructured tungsten oxide thin film was fabricated on stainless steel mesh by FVD process changing the process variables of FVD. We found that proper selection of suitable process conditions in FVD was quite important for the 1-D nanostructure growth on stainless steel wire mesh with high surface area, which is quite important for photocatalytic application.

To optimize the aseismic performance of nonlinear fluid viscous dampers (FVD) of cable-stayed bridge in the highly seismic zone, Xigu Yellow River Bridge in northwest China is taken as an example. Nonlinear time-history analysis method is used to research on the relation among the internal forces, displacements, and damping parameters of the 650 tonnage FVD. The method of getting the minimum of binary functions is used to obtain the optimal parameters of FVD. Also, the 1 : 1 full-scale FVD model is made and used in the constitutive relation test. Then the test result of the damping parameters can be got by normal equation method. The optimized method to obtain the damping parameters is further verified. The results indicate that seismic response in key positions of the cable-stayed bridge can be reduced by installing longitudinal nonlinear FVD between the towers and girders if choosing reasonable damping parameters C and ξ. The optimal damping parameters can be calculated accurately by the proposed method of optimizing damping parameters of nonlinear FVD, and the constitutive relation test verifies the correctness of the optimization analysis method. Conclusions concerned can be applied to the design of nonlinear FVD for cable-stayed bridges.

AIM: To quantitatively detect aqueous levels of angiopoietin-like (ANGPTL)3, ANGPTL4, and ANGPTL6 and investigate their correlation with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) findings in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME). METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 23 patients (27 eyes) with type 2 diabetes and 16 control subjects (20 eyes). All patients underwent OCTA imaging and ultra-wide field fundus photography. Diabetic patients were categorized into two groups according to the presence or absence of diabetic retinopathy (DME group, 14 patients, 16 eyes); and non-diabetic retinopathy (NDR) group, 9 patients, 11 eyes, respectively. Aqueous levels of ANGPTL3, ANGPTL4, and ANGPTL6 were assessed using suspension array technology, and foveal-centered 3×3 mm2 OCTA scans were automatically graded to determine the central, inner, and full vessel density (CVD, IVD, FVD); central, inner, and full perfusion density (CPD, IPD, FPD), foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, FAZ perimeter, and FAZ circularity index (FAZ-CI) on superficial capillary plexuses. Additionally, central subfield thickness (CST), cube volume (CV), and cube average thickness (CAT) were measured in a model of macular cube 512×128. RESULTS: Aqueous ANGPTL3 levels were not significantly different among the three groups (P>0.05). ANGPTL4 levels were significantly higher in the DME group than the control and NDR groups (P<0.0001 and P<0.001), while ANGPTL6 levels were significantly higher in the DME group than the control group (P<0.05). In the whole cohort, the aqueous ANGPTL3 levels correlated negatively with the IVD, FVD, IPD, and FPD, and positively with the CV and CAT. The aqueous ANGPTL4 levels correlated negatively with the CVD, IVD, FVD, CPD, IPD, and FPD, and positively with the FAZ perimeter, CST, CV, and CAT. The aqueous ANGPTL6 levels correlated negatively with the IVD, FVD, IPD, FPD, FAZ-CI and positively with CST, CV, CAT. CONCLUSION: ANGPTL4 and ANGPTL6 may be associated with vascular leakage in DME and may represent good targets for DME therapy. In addition, OCTA metrics may be useful for evaluating macular ischemia in DME.

Background: Factor V deficiency (FVD) is a rare bleeding disorder (RBD) mostly present in regions with a high rate of consanguinity. FVD after FXIII deficiency is the next more prevalent RBD in Sistan and Baluchistan (S&B) in southeastern Iran. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical manifestations and severity of bleeding diathesis in patients with FVD. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted on 23 patients with FVD in S&B province. FVD was diagnosed by clinical findings and routine laboratory tests. Bleeding diatheses were classified into three grades (I-III) depending on the severity of symptoms. The severity of bleeding episodes in our patients was compared with other RBDs. Result: Based on residual plasma FV activity, 6 (26%), 16 (69.5%) and 1 (4.5%) patients had mild, moderate and severe factor deficiency, respectively. 24% of the patients had grade III life-threatening bleeding episodes which in comparison with FVII deficiency (17.4%) and FI deficiency (21%) had a higher incidence, and in comparison with FX deficiency (41.7%) and FXIII deficiency (63.1) had a lower incidence. Grade II and grade I bleeding diathesis were observed in 56.2 and 16.7% of the patients, respectively. Conclusion: FVD is the second most common type of RBD in S&B province and grade II bleeding episodes were the major bleeding presentation and observed in more than half of the patients.

ABSTRAKPendekatan teknologi dapat dilakukan dalam perencanaan struktur tahan gempa salah satunya yaitu dengan menggunakan Fluid Viscous Damper (FVD). Alat peredam FVD memiliki fungsi untuk menyerap energi gempa dan mengurangi gaya gempa rencana yang dipikul elemen-elemen struktur sehingga memungkinkan struktur bangunan menjadi lebih elastis. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jumlah lantai yang paling efektif terhadap kinerja struktur portal beton dengan pola penempatan FVD yang paling baik untuk variasi jumlah lantai gedung yaitu 12, 16, dan 20 lantai. Metode yang digunakan yaitu analisis dinamis riwayat waktu dengan menggunakan software ETABS v.15.2.2. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa struktur gedung 12 lantai memberikan peningkatan respon struktur yang paling baik. Penggunaan FVD pada struktur 12 lantai mereduksi waktu getar alami struktur sebesar 49,75%, meningkatkan gaya geser dasar hingga 28,87%, dan mereduksi simpangan struktur baik akibat beban gempa respons spektra maupun beban time history.Kata Kunci: fluid viscous damper, metode riwayat waktu, waktu getar, gaya geser dasar, dan simpangan struktur ABSTRACTTechnological approach can be performed on earthquake-resistant structural design method, one of which is by using the Fluid Viscous Damper (FVD). The main function of FVD as a damper is to absorb seismic energy and reduce the seismic force which is carried by structural elements and thus the building structures become more elastic. This study aims to determine the most effective number of floors for the performance of reinforced concrete frames structure using best position of FVD with three floors variations, which are 12, 16, and 20 floors. The dynamic time history analysis method is tested using ETABS v.15.2.2 software. The results showed that the 12-story structure generates the best structural response. The installation of FVD on a 12-story structure reduces the natural period of structure by 49,75%, increases the base shear force by 28,87%, and reduces the drift of structure due to response spectrum load as well as time history loads.Keyword: fluid viscous damper, time history methods, structural period, base shear, and drift

The connected and automated vehicle (CAV) is regarded as an effective way to improve traffic efficiency and safety, which can utilize vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication technology to obtain real-time status information from multiple preceding vehicles. In view of the car-following characteristic of CAV in a V2V communications environment, an extended car-following model AHT-FVD is proposed which takes both average headway and electronic throttle angle difference into account. The stability of this model is examined via linear stability analysis. It is found that the proposed model has a larger stability region than both the full velocity difference (FVD) model and throttle-based FVD (T-FVD) model. Namely, this AHT-FVD model can effectively stabilize traffic flow and alleviate traffic congestion in theory. Moreover, a series of numerical simulations are carried out to explore how average headway together with electronic throttle angle difference influences the stability of traffic flow. Simulation results show that increasing either the average headway weight or the electronic throttle angle difference control signal coefficients can yield higher traffic flow stability. Simulation result is highly consistent with theoretical analysis.

This article introduces new empirical evidence exploring the relationship between the introduction of Fair Value Disclosure (FVD) and audit fees, and the moderating effect of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) on this relationship. This study is primarily motivated by the limited and inconclusive research on the monitoring costs resulting from FVD. The Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method using a sample of 222 Jordanian firms during 2005–2018 is applied. The analysis finds that a greater level of FVD is the major cause of high audit fees. Results are more pronounced for firms with larger proportions of subjective FVDs (Level 3 assets). A significant negative (positive) impact of the precrisis (post-crisis) period on the association between the proportion of fair-valued assets and audit fees is confirmed. The regression results confirm the negative effect of pre-crisis period on moderating the association between the all-fair value input levels (Levels 1, 2 and 3 assets) and audit fees. The post-crisis period has a significant positive effect only in relation to Level 1 assets. Findings of this study provide policymakers and standards setters with updated evidence originating from a non-Western setting about the post-implementation costs of FVD.

Since the appearance of the first modern multistories buildings, besides the demand of ensuring the bearing capacity, one of the urgent problems facing the engineer is to do how to design structure to ensure the requirements of normal use such as displacement, motion acceleration within permissible limits. There exist many methods to reduce these response of structure under lateral load. Among these, using fluid viscous damper (FVD) is one of the most applied equipment because of its simplicity. This paper presents the examination of eight-story steel frame structure subjected to seismic load. The FVD system is defined in Etabs with link properties. In each story, four dampers are located in each direction of plan, with two on each side of the center of stiffness of the story. The time history analysis was conducted to study the structure subjected to seimic load collected from the function library of program Etabs. The effect of FVD system was determined by the dynamic response of the building and displacement indexes such as maximum displacement of roof, story drift ratio. The results show that, all the dynamic response characters of structure were decreased significantly when providing the FVD to it.

Over the past decades, the Netherlands has witnessed the rise of several influential populist radical right parties, including the Pim Fortuyn List (Lijst Pim Fortuyn), Geert Wilders’s Party for Freedom (Partij voor de Vrijheid) and, more recently, the Forum for Democracy (Forum voor Democratie [FvD]). By analyzing the party’s organizational structures, this article seeks to determine whether the FvD may be considered a new “mass party” and to what extent ordinary members can exert influence over the party’s internal procedures. The party’s efforts to establish a large membership base suggest that the FvD set out to build a relatively complex mass organization. Through targeted advertising campaigns, the party made strategic use of social media platforms to rally support. Thus, while the means may have changed with the advent of the internet, the FvD invested in creating some organizational features that are commonly associated with the “mass party” model. At the same time, however, the party did not really seek to foster a community of loyal partisan activists among its membership base but instead treated its members as donors. The party is clearly characterized by centralized leadership in the sense that the party’s spearhead, Thierry Baudet, maintains full control over key decision-making areas such as ideological direction, campaigning, and internal procedures. At first sight, the party appears to have departed from Wilders’s leader-centered party model. However, a closer look at the party apparatus demonstrates that the FvD is, in fact, very hierarchical, suggesting that the party’s internal democracy is much weaker than the party’s name might suggest.

Direct displacement-based design (DDBD) method is one of the most effective methods for performance-base design of structures that has been also employed to design structures controlled by fluid viscous damper (FVD). In previous studies, a modified DDBD has been developed to apply the higher mode effects as well as difference between spectral velocity and pseudo-spectral velocity on the design velocity of FVD. To this end, two constants were defined to correct the damping coefficient of FVD that these correction constants had been determined in a non-classical and iterative manner. In this study, a new classical method is proposed for determining these constant such that no iteration is required in DDBD. In order to be able to introduce this design approach as a reliable framework, its performance is validated under different sets of earthquake records and this design approach is also developed for structures controlled by nonlinear FVD. Steel moment-resisting frames with different numbers of stories have been designed using this method. For comparison, structures have been also designed based on DDBD proposed in previous researches. The results show that DDBD approach improved in this study is capable to achieve the design performance level under different sets of earthquake records and this design approach has more effective performance than previous design methods. Performance of steel moment-resisting frames equipped with nonlinear FVD also shows excellent performance of this design approach in achievement of desirable performance level. Therefore, DDBD approach proposed in this study can be introduced as a new classical and reliable framework because of its simplicity and excellent performance under different sets of earthquakes.

Aims. Short-wavelength blue light damaged retina by the oxidative stress in the retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. Filtering blue light from screen could reduce blue hazard, whereas it inevitably altered color-gamut coverage and color-deviation level. Although abnormal fundus-vascular density (FVD) sometimes indicated fundus disease, few researchers noticed its responses to the variation of color-gamut coverage and color-deviation level. Methods. In this study, we performed cellular experiments and analyzed the RPE cell viabilities (CVs) in spectrums with different blue (455-475 nm) ratios to describe the corresponding oxidative-stress levels. Further, we investigated the effects of color-gamut and deviation on FVD variations during the screen-watching task using human factor experiments with 30 participants (university students, including 17 males and 13 females, 21 to 30 years old). Results. RPE CVs were similar in different spectrums, implying that non-oxidative blue filtering hardly contributed to CV improvement. Color-deviation level seems to induce more significant effects on the visual function compared to color-gamut coverage, and MTF and FVD presents similar variation trends during the visual task. Conclusion. Oxidative-free blue filtering contributed little to decrease retinal oxidative stress yet caused color-deviation increase, which caused significant FVD reduction.

Objective: Our recent findings confirmed the effectiveness of sodium metabisulfite (SMB) in controlling the growth of undesirable microorganisms in fruit and vegetable discards (FVD); however, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are susceptible to its antibacterial effects. Two series of experiments were conducted to enable the survivability of LAB during silage fermentation of a total mixed ration (TMR) containing SMB-treated FVD.Methods: In Exp. 1, the objective was to isolate a strain of LAB tolerable to the toxic effect of SMB. In Exp. 2, the SMB load was minimized through its partial replacement with a chemical mixture (CM) based on sodium benzoate (57%), potassium sorbate (29%), and sodium nitrite (14%). FVD was treated with SMB + CM (2 g each/kg biomass) and added to the TMR at varying levels (0%, 10%, or 20%), with or without KU18 inoculation.Results: The KU18 was screened as a presumptive LAB strain showing superior tolerance to SMB in broth medium, and was identified at the molecular level using 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis as Lactobacillus plantarum. Inoculation of KU18 in TMR containing SMB was not successful for the LAB development, biomass acidification, and organoleptic properties of the resultant silage. In Exp. 2, based on the effectiveness and economic considerations, an equal proportion of SMB and CM (2 g each/kg FVD) was selected as the optimal loads for the subsequent silage fermentation experiment. Slight differences were determined in LAB development, biomass acidification, and sensorial characteristics among the experimental silages, suggesting the low toxicity of the preservatives on LAB growth.Conclusion: Although KU18 strain was not able to efficiently develop in silage mass containing SMB-treated FVD, the partial substitution of SMB load with the CM effectively alleviated the toxic effect of SMB and allowed LAB development during the fermentation of SMB + CM-treated FVD in TMR.

Abstract: Seismic event induces undesirable motion in buildings, energy dissipation systems in civil engineering are indeed needed. There is a mix of structures with passive energy dissipation supplied by Fluid Viscous Dampers systems (FVD). This technology is increasingly being utilized to improve seismic protection for both existing and new structures. The findings of the FVD systems are investigated in order to compare the structural response with and without this device of energy dissipation compared for low and high rise structures, the damper installed at different storey and varying the coefficient of damping (Cd) has been focused in this paper which provides an insight when the variation of Cd and its locations,. The findings of the FVD's impressive ability to increase the structure's dissipative capabilities without increasing its stiffness. In the case of high rise FVD performance has been evaluated through the top storey displacements which will allow for a conclusion. The perception characteristics of drivers greatly vary with the status of traffic flow. To designate the vehicle trajectory more accurately, a driver’s perception headway coefficient is introduced, and a fuzzy full velocity difference (FVD) model is proposed in this paper. Consistent with the control theory, the stability conditions of the improved model are derived. Through the fuzzy control method, the input and output items of the control rule are constructed, respectively. The genetic algorithm is operated to calibrate the model parameters of timid and aggressive drivers. Eventually, the effectiveness of the model is verified by simulations. The research results show that, with the decrease of driver’s perception headway coefficient, the stability range of the traffic flow gradually increases, which is beneficial. Additionally, the average root means square percentage errors (RMSPE) values of the full velocity difference (FVD) model, the intelligent driver model (IDM), and the proposed model are, respectively, 0.312, 0.308, and 0.213. Compared with IDM and FVD models, the proposed model can accurately describe the local velocity variations and determine the car-following behavior of the human driving vehicle better.

Abstract Damping plays a major role in design of structures resistant to earthquakes. The damping reduces the effective of the structure when they are assigned to lateral loads by energy dissipation. The number of dampers is available and in use today. Most of the dampers usually isolate the super structure from the substructure, dividing them in order to hamper the flow of vibrations into the superstructure. This classification is termed as base isolation techniques. While, the rest of the damping techniques, dissipates the oncoming vibrations on the superstructure itself and minimizes the damage to the superstructure. In this present study, Fluid Viscous Dampers (FVD) are used extensively over types of dampers. The structure endures two load types, the vertical loads and the sidewise loads, and conveys to the foundation. In order to have earthquake resistant structures, FVD have been used. In the present study, Dissymmetric Buildings are analyzed with and without Fluid Viscous Dampers. The software ETABS 2016 was used. Using Time history analysis in ETABS software, the RC building is considered and the structure is evaluated and connect with and without FVD.

This study has concentrated on the nonlinear behavior of semi-buried concrete cylindrical storage tanks not subjected to seismic loads such as earthquakes. The support conditions of the tank in this study were investigated in both flexible and rigid conditions. A comparison between the behavior of reinforced concrete and pre-stressed concrete of the tanks has been done for flexible support conditions. Finite Element Method (FE) has been used in order to determine the nonlinear response of cylindrical tanks under dynamic time history analysis and pushover. In addition, in this study a new approach has been provided for tanks with flexible support in order to reduce the seismic response of structures with the seismic rehabilitation method using a passive vibration control system of the viscous damper. it has been shown that using FVD the tank’s response subjected to the seismic loads is reduced. Another achievement of a passive vibration control system of the viscous damper (FVD) in concrete tanks, is the improvement of the system by reducing the cracking of concrete. It can be concluded that flexible-based tanks equipped with FVD can be used as an economical and practical system used in earthquake-prone areas.

This article inspects the likely outcome of using the fair value (FV) concept on audit firms’ anomalous audit fees. The research performs fixed effects regression to evaluate the given hypotheses using data gathered by hand from 105 Jordanian publicly traded enterprises between 2005 and 2018. The study reveals that FV proxies have a favorable and substantial effect on the atypical audit fees paid by Jordanian enterprises. The findings are more evident for businesses with a higher percentage of subjective FVs (level 3 assets). This research gives current empirical information on the effects of adopting IFRS/IAS for policymakers and standard setters. The results contribute by offering recommendations on the factors that influence audit fees for auditors and clients. The present research updates the Fair Value Disclosure (FVD) auditing model and adds new empirical data to close a gap in the auditing literature. It adds to the limited and inconclusive audit price studies already available by examining the post-implementation of FVD. This research gives current empirical facts on the consequences of adopting an FV model in Jordan for policymakers and standard setters. Additionally, this investigation adds by offering information on the factors that influence audit fees for both auditors and clients. The findings provide regulatory authorities with information on observing and regulating the audit vocation as well as on auditing FVD activities.

Purpose. To study retinal blood flow in pregnant women with diabetes mellitus and gestational diabetes mellitus using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Material and methods. 203 pregnant women in the third trimester were examined: 24 – with type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus (T1DM and T2DM), 143 – with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and 36 apparently healthy women with physiological pregnancy, who consisted the control group. OCTA imaging was performed using the RTVue XR Avanti OCT 6 mm × 6 mm "Angio Retina" scan protocols (Optovue, USA). The whole image vessel density (wiVD), foveal vessel density (FVD), and foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area in the superficial capillary plexus were studied. Results. FVD in pregnant women with diabetes mellitus was significantly less than in pregnant women with GDM and in the control group, in this connection, it can be assume changes of the retinal microvascular regulation because of chronic disturbances of carbohydrate metabolism in such patients and due to microangiopathy development. FAZ area extension and wiVD diminution were revealed in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) compared to datas of the group of pregnant women with diabetes mellitus and absence of DR, in the absence of differences in FVD indexes. In 2 patients with T1D and the absence of ophthalmoscopic signs of DR, OCTA revealed areas of nonperfusion in the posterior pole of the eye. Conclusions. A significant FVD decrease in the superficial capillary plexus was revealed in pregnant women with diabetes mellitus, compared with pregnant women with GDM and healthy women with physiological pregnancy in the absence of significant difference in wiVD in the superficial capillary plexus and FAZ area. Patients with DR showed an expansion of FAZ area and decrease in wiVD in the superficial capillary plexus relative to the group of pregnant women with diabetes mellitus without DR. OCTA helps to identify areas of retinal nonperfusion in the posterior pole of the eye in pregnant women with diabetes in the absence of ophthalmoscopic signs of DR. We propose a simple control method to suppress two-lane traffic congestion for full velocity difference (for short, FVD) car-following model. The influence of lane changing behaviors is also studied in the stability of two-lane traffic flow under the boundary condition, and the friction interference which is from the neighbor lane has been taken into account. We derive the stability conditions by the control method. The feedback signals, which include vehicular information from both lanes, acting on the two-lane traffic system have been extended to the FVD car-following model. Theoretically, lane changing behaviors can break the stability of two-lane traffic flow and aggravate traffic perturbation, but it is proven that the congested traffic in two-lane traffic flow could be suppressed by using this control method.

AbstractInter-storey seismic isolation is increasingly gaining attention. One of the main related issues is the need to limit the relative displacement between substructure and superstructure, while maintaining a good seismic performance of the superstructure. As shown in some studies, fluid viscous dampers (FVDs) mounted in isolation systems are effective in reducing isolator deflection but can be harmful by amplifying inter-storey drifts and floor accelerations. Additionally, the effectiveness of FVDs for inter-storey applications was investigated only recently, and specific approaches for their optimisation and performance evaluation are missing. Therefore, this paper proposes a method for the optimal multi-objective design of FVDs, based on the definition of appropriate surrogate response models, which allows for rationally comparing the FVD effects for a wide range of dampers and structures. In particular, the optimal FVD parameters are provided in a dimensionless form, so that they can be predicted by design equations of general validity within the range of the structures analysed. This method is applied to a stock of regular structures with various vibration periods of superstructure, isolation and substructure, examining a linear and a non-linear isolation system and a set of natural records, in order to comprehensively assess the effects of FVDs and their non-linearity on the seismic performance of these structures. Finally, prediction models of optimal FVD parameters are provided based on the results obtained and are applied to three case studies as an example.

Tungsten oxide (WO3) is semiconductor material which can be used for various applications. Especially, one-dimensional (1-D) nanostructured WO3 shows the high photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance due to high surface area and short transport route of electron–hole pair. The flame vapor deposition (FVD) process is an efficient and economical method for preparation of the 1-D nanos-tructured WO3 thin film. Molybdenum doping is a well-known method to improve the PEC performance of WO3 by reducing band gap and increasing electrical property. In this study, we prepared the 1-D WO3 nanostructures doped with Mo by FVD single step process. We confirmed that Mo was successfully doped on WO3 without changing significantly the original nanostructure, crystal structure and chemical bonding state of WO3 thin film. As a result of PEC measurement, the pho-tocurrent densities of WO3 thin film with Mo doping were higher by about 1.4 to 2 times (for applied voltage above 0.7 V vs. SCE) than those without Mo doping.

In the past decades, many improved car-following models based on the full velocity difference (FVD) model have been developed. But these models do not consider the acceleration of leading vehicle. Some of them consider individual anticipation behavior of drivers, but they either do not quantitatively determine the types of driving or artificially divide the driving types rather than deriving them from actual traffic data. In this paper, driver’s driving styles are firstly categorized based on actual traffic data via data mining and clustering algorithm. Secondly, a new car-following model based on FVD model is developed, taking into account individual anticipation effects and the acceleration of leading vehicle. The effect of driving characteristics and leading vehicle’s acceleration on car-following behavior is further analyzed via numerical simulation. The results show that considering the acceleration of preceding vehicle in the model improves the stability of traffic flow and different driving characteristics have different influence on the stability of traffic flow.

The existing car-following models of connected vehicles commonly lack experimental data as evidence. In this paper, a Gray correlation analysis is conducted to explore the change in driving behavior with safety messages. The data mining analysis shows that the dominant factor of car-following behavior is headway with no safety message, whereas the velocity difference between the leading and following vehicle becomes the dominant factor when warning messages are received. According to this result, an extended car-following model considering the impact of safety messages (IOSM) is proposed based on the full velocity difference (FVD) model. The stability criterion of this new model is then obtained through a linear stability analysis. Finally, numerical simulations are performed to verify the theoretical analysis results. Both analytical and simulation results show that traffic congestion can be suppressed by safety messages. However, the IOSM model is slightly less stable than the FVD model if the average headway in traffic flow is approximately 14–20 m.

As a common agricultural waste, corn straw (CS) has a refractory structure, which is not conducive to anaerobic digestion (AD). Appropriate pretreatment is crucial for addressing this problem. Thus, freeze vacuum drying (FVD) was proposed. In this study, fresh CS (F-CS) pretreated (5 h, −40 °C) by FVD and naturally dried CS (D-CS) were compared. Differences in substrate surface structure and nutrient composition were first investigated. Results show that a loose and porous structure, crystallinity, and broken chemical bonds, as well as higher proportions of VS, C, N, cellulose, hemicellulose, and crude proteins in F-CS show a potential for methane production. Besides, process performance and stability were also examined in both high (4, VS basis) and low (1, VS basis) S/I ratio AD. A higher degradation ratio of hemicellulose as well as richer dissolved microbial metabolites, coenzymes, tyrosine-like proteins, and hydrolysis rate of particulate organic matter in the F-CS system enhanced the efficiency of methane conversion. The cumulative methane yield increased from 169.66 (D-CS) to 209.97 (F-CS) mL/gVS in the high S/I ratio system (p = 0.02 < 0.05), and 156.97 to 171.89 mL/gVS in the low S/I ratio system. Additionally, 16S-rRNA-gene-based analysis was performed. Interestingly, the coordination of key bacteria (Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Bacillus, Terrisporobacter, Clostridium_sensu_stricto_7, Thermoclostrium, UCG-012, and HN-HF0106) was more active. Poorer Methanosarcina and Methanomassiliicoccus as well as richer Methanobrevibacter and Methanoculleus stimulated the co-relationship of key archaea with diverse methanogenesis pathways. This study aims to verify the positive effect of FVD pretreatment on AD of CS, so as to provide a reference for applications in waste management.

Fluid viscous dampers (FVDs) are widely used in long-span suspension bridges for earthquake resistance. To analyze efficiently the influences of FVDs on the dynamic response of a suspension bridge under high-intensity traffic flow, a bridge-vehicle coupling method optimized by isoparametric mapping and improved binary search in this work was first developed and validated. Afterwards, the traffic flow was simulated on the basis of monitored weigh-in-motion data. The dynamic responses of bridge were analyzed by the proposed method under different FVD parameters. Results showed that FVDs could positively affect bridge dynamic response under traffic flow. The maximum accumulative longitudinal girder displacement, longitudinal girder displacement, and longitudinal pylon acceleration decreased substantially, whereas the midspan girder bending moment, pylon bending moment, longitudinal pylon displacement, and suspender force were less affected. The control efficiency of maximum longitudinal girder displacement and accumulative girder displacement reached 33.67% and 57.71%, longitudinal pylon acceleration and girder bending moment reached 31.51% and 7.14%, and the pylon longitudinal displacement, pylon bending moment, and suspender force were less than 3%. The increased damping coefficient and decreased velocity exponent can reduce the bridge dynamic response. However, when the velocity exponent was 0.1, an excessive damping coefficient brought little improvement and may lead to high-intensity work under traffic flow, which will adversely affect component durability. The benefits of low velocity exponent also reduced when the damping coefficient was high enough, so if the velocity exponent has to be increased, the damping coefficient can be enlarged to fit with the velocity exponent. The installation of FVDs influences dynamic responses of bridge structures in daily operations and this issue warrants investigation. Thus, traffic load should be considered in FVD design because structural responses are perceptibly influenced by FVD parameters.

The paper is aimed at investigating the longitudinal vibration and vibration reduction of a cable-stayed bridge under vehicular loads with emphasis on the longitudinal resonance. To investigate the phenomenon of longitudinal resonant vibration, the equivalent longitudinal excitation for the bridge deck due to moving vertical loads is approximately expressed as longitudinal loads with a sine-wave form. A formula for estimating the longitudinal resonant speed of the cable-stayed bridge is developed. A long-span cable-stayed railway bridge is considered in the case study to calculate the longitudinal response of the bridge under moving loads at different speeds. The numerical results indicate that the longitudinal resonance for the cable-stayed bridge occurs when the speeds of the moving loads approach the resonant speed predicted by the analytical formula. A fluid viscous damper (FVD) is employed to reduce the longitudinal vibration of the bridge under moving loads. The results show that the longitudinal resonant responses of the cable-stayed bridge can be effectively mitigated by the FVD adopted.

Phoma trachephila (Petri) Kantschaveli et Gikachvili causes dieback of several Citrus species. The impact of this fungus on leaf hydraulics was studied in Citrus aurantium L. (sour orange) with the aim of identifying the primary mechanism of damage to leaves. Leaves inoculated with a conidial suspension were measured for conductance to water vapor (gL) and specific hydraulic conductance (Kleaf) every 3 days after inoculation. The earliest symptom of infection consisted of vein chlorosis. Functional vein density (FVD) was monitored and microscopic observations were made of major vein conduits. Impairment of vein hydraulics started 25 days after inoculation with a losses of Kleaf of 40% and gL of ~60%. Most minor veins within chlorotic areas were no longer functioning and some conduits of the major veins showed digested interconduit pits leading to vein cavitation. The close Kleaf–FVD relationship revealed that vein impairment caused drop of Kleaf and, consequently, of gL at chlorotic areas. Leaf infection was focused to veins that were first forced to embolise and then invaded by fungal hyphae. The vein embolism due to the Phoma amplifies the native dominant hydraulic resistance of leaf veins, and leads ultimately to early shedding of infected leaves.

Purpose. To investigate changes in retinal blood flow in pregnant women with diabetes mellitus (DM) using optical coherence tomography in angiography (OCTA) mode. Material and methods. 60 pregnant women were examined. The main group consisted of 24 women with DM type 1 and type 2. The control group was represented by 36 healthy women with physiological pregnancy. Women underwent OCTA on an Optovue RTVue XR Avanti device (Optovue Inc., USA) using the HD Angio Retina 6.0 mm scanning protocol. The total vascular density (TVD), foveal vascular density (FVD), and the area of the foveal avascular zone (AFAZ) in the superficial retinal plexus were studied. The survey was carried out in all trimesters of pregnancy in the main group, in the control group – in the third trimester. Results. When conducting a comparative analysis, no significant differences in the values of TDV and AFAZ were found between the main group and the control group. FVD values in pregnant women with diabetes were statistically significantly lower relative to the control group (p=0.001). There were no significant differences in FVD values in the subgroups of pregnant women with diabetic retinopathy (DR) and with diabetes and the absence of DR in the third trimester (p=0.114). However, AFAZ indices in patients with DR were significantly higher (p=0.039), and TDV – significantly lower in comparison with pregnant women with diabetes and no DR (p=0.035). Conclusions. 1. In pregnant women with diabetes in the third trimester, a statistically significant decrease in FPS in the superficial retinal plexus was revealed in comparison with healthy women with physiological pregnancy, in the absence of significant differences in TDV and AFAZ. 2. In pregnant women with DR in the third trimester, a statistically significant expansion of AFAZ with a decrease in TDV in the superficial plexus was revealed in comparison with pregnant women with DM and no DR. In this paper, we explore each vehicle's exhaust emissions under the full velocity difference (FVD) model and the car-following model with consideration of the traffic interruption probability during three typical traffic situations. Numerical results show that the vehicle's exhaust emissions of the second model are less than those of the first model under the three typical traffic situations, which shows that the second model can reduce each vehicle's exhaust emissions.

Damping of geo-materials in resonant column test is commonly evaluated with two alternative experimental methods; during a steady-state vibration (SSV) and during free-vibration decay (FVD). Damping is an important dynamic property necessary to capture the complete behavior of soils. In the study, representative test results on crushed rock are discussed with a focus on material damping derivations along with stiffness degradation test results derived from torsional resonant column tests. A comparison between material damping derived from the SSV and FVD methods and from small to medium shear strains is presented and discussed. In the first part of the paper, the definition of material damping by means of a closed loop in the shear stress - shear strain plane is presented along with a report on literature data associated with damping of coarse-grained soils and the important factors that control material damping of sands and gravels. In the second part, the materials and experimental techniques of the study are described briefly and the background of determining material damping in a resonant column test is also presented along with the analytical formulae. Finally, in the third part representative test results are given including both stiffness and damping, and a comparison of damping derivations using different methods is also highlighted.

When a structure is subjected to earthquake forces, vibrations are setup in the structure leading to severe damages to the structure and results in loss of property and life. Now a days, keen attention is given to research and development of vibration control devices to mitigate the seismic effects. The present duty of civil engineer is to discover earthquake resisting design approach to reduce structural damages. The basic technology used to protect the structure from damaging earthquake effects is “base isolation”. The base isolation system decouples the super-structure from the substructure by means of flexible devices through which seismic energy is dissipated. In the present context G+15 storey structure situated in zone V is modeled and analyzed using ETABS-2017 software by providing different base isolation systems namely a) RC structure having fixed base b) RC structure with Fluid Viscous Damper (FVD) and Lead Rubber Bearing (LRB). Response of the structure is studied in terms of story displacement, story drift, base shear, natural time period and design lateral forces. It is found that the provision of Fluid Viscous Damper (FVD) and Lead Rubber Bearing (LRB) in a same structure shows better performance in story displacement, base shear, story drift, natural time period and design lateral forces as compared to fixed base model.

In vibration control of compound structures, inter-substructure damper (ISSD) systems exploit the out-of-phase response of different substructures to dissipate the kinetic vibrational energy by means of inter-substructure damping links. For seismic protection of multistory buildings, distributed sets of interstory fluid viscous dampers (FVDs) are ISSD systems of particular interest. The connections between distributed FVD systems and decentralized static output-feedback control allow using advanced controller-design methodologies to obtain passive ISSD systems with high-performance characteristics. A major issue of that approach is the computational difficulties associated to the numerical solution of optimization problems with structured bilinear matrix inequality constraints. In this work, we present a novel iterative linear matrix inequality procedure that can be applied to obtain enhanced suboptimal solutions for that kind of optimization problems. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, we design a system of supplementary interstory FVDs for the seismic protection of a five-story building by synthesizing a decentralized static velocity-feedback H∞ controller. In the performance assessment, we compare the frequency-domain and time-domain responses of the designed FVD system with the behavior of the optimal static state-feedback H∞ controller. The obtained results indicate that the proposed approach allows designing passive ISSD systems that are capable to match the level of performance attained by optimal state-feedback active controllers.

High resolution aeromagnetic data combined with the geological settings of the study area were employed in delineating the structures that may host the gold mineral within the middle parts of Anka schist belts. These data were analysed, processed and interpreted using; reduction to magnetic equator (RTE), first and second vertical derivatives (FVD & SVD), geologic contact, analytic signal (AS), centre for exploration targeting (CET) and source parameter imaging (SPI) techniques. RTE technique was applied to prevent North-South signal in the data from dominating the results, due to the area falls under the low latitude. FVD and SVD maps shows major NE trend of the structures within study area. CET map revealed the regions with linear structures (lineament) which were trending South-Eastern regions of the study area. Geologic contact map has highlighted high density of structural contacts combined with junctions and intersections of different structures found within the area. AS map enhanced the variation in the magnetisation of the magnetic sources and also indicates the boundaries of anomaly texture. These techniques have revealed the regions that may host gold mineralisation potential areas to be; northern parts of Bukkuyum, Anka, Maru, Sakaba, Mariga, southern part of Wasagu/Danko. Most of the structures (lineaments) found within areas were associated with the vein of the mineralisation potential which plays important role in determine a gold mineral. Abstract One important aspect of soil dynamics is attenuation or energy loses. This inherent dynamic property is essential in the analysis of soil behavior subjected to a dynamic load. Energy absorption in soils leads to the definition of an equivalent viscous damping ratio (D). In resonant column testing there are commonly two different approaches in measuring material damping: during a steady-state vibration (SSV), when the specimen is vibrated at its first mode; and during free-vibration decay (FVD). The study reports results associated with the small to medium strain range material damping from FVD method, i.e. there is a cut off the constant vibration of the specimen at resonance and the specimen is allowed to free-vibration mode while the decay strain amplitude during free-vibration is calculated. The experiments were conducted on cohesive soils (sasiCl, Cl, clSa) from various test sites located in Warsaw, Poland. All the specimens were subjected to torsional mode of vibration at their first natural frequency, at different mean effective stress. The authors paid particular attention to the number of successive cycles after the free-vibration of the material is initiated. They examined various propositions from the literature and compare the received damping values using different number of cycles of vibration. The results showed that the most stable values of material damping ratio can be obtained by selecting each time a line of best fit on the authors’ choice of number of free-vibration cycles. However, the number of these cycles should not exceed 10.

It was unclear whether weight had any association with the outcomes of the supplementation.ObjectiveTo investigate whether baseline body mass index (BMI) modifies vitamin D metabolism and response to supplementation.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsVITAL is a completed randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial for the primary prevention of cancer and cardiovascular disease. In the present cohort study, an analysis was conducted in a subset of VITAL participants who provided a blood sample at baseline and a subset with a repeated sample at 2 years’ follow-up. VITAL was conducted from July 1, 2010, to November 10, 2018; data analysis for the present study was conducted from August 1, 2021, to November 9, 2021.InterventionsTreatment outcomes of vitamin D, 2000 IU/d, supplementation vs placebo associated with clinical and novel vitamin D–related biomarkers by BMI category adjusted for other factors associated with vitamin D status.Main Outcomes and MeasuresMultivariable-adjusted means (SE) or 95% CIs of vitamin D–related serum biomarkers at baseline and follow-up: total 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD), 25-OHD3, free vitamin D (FVD), bioavailable vitamin D (BioD), vitamin D–binding protein (VDBP), albumin, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and calcium, and log-transformed as needed.ResultsA total of 16 515 participants (mean [SD] age, 67.7 [7.0] years; 8371 women [50.7%]; 12420 non-Hispanic White [76.9%]) were analyzed at baseline, including 2742 with a follow-up blood sample. Before randomization, serum total 25-OHD levels were incrementally lower at higher BMI categories (adjusted mean [SE]: underweight, 32.3 [0.7] ng/mL; normal weight, 32.3 [0.1] ng/mL; overweight, 30.5 [0.1] ng/mL; obesity class I, 29.0 [0.2] ng/mL; and obesity class II, 28.0 [0.2] ng/mL; P &amp;lt; .001 for linear trend). Similarly, baseline 25-OHD3, FVD, BioD, VDBP, albumin, and calcium levels were lower with higher BMI, while PTH level was higher (all P &amp;lt; .001 for linear trend). Compared with placebo, randomization to vitamin D supplementation was associated with an increase in total 25-OHD, 25-OHD3, FVD, and BioD levels compared with placebo at 2 years’ follow-up, but increases were significantly lower at higher BMI categories (all treatment effect interactions P &amp;lt; .001). Supplementation did not substantially change VDBP, albumin, PTH, or calcium levels.Conclusions and RelevanceIn this randomized cohort study, vitamin D supplementation increased serum vitamin D–related biomarkers, with a blunted response observed for participants with overweight or obesity at baseline. These longitudinal findings suggest that BMI may be associated with modified response to vitamin D supplementation and may in part explain the observed diminished outcomes of supplementation for various health outcomes among individuals with higher BMI.

Abstract The histone-deacetylase inhibitor panobinostat (PAN) has shown efficacy in phase II and III trials for multiple myeloma (MM) and has recently been approved in combination with bortezomib (BTZ) and dexamethasone (DEX) for the treatment of MM patients with at least two prior lines of therapy including BTZ and an immunomodulatory agent (IMiD). Here we retrospectively report our single center experience with PAN/BTZ/DEX (FVD) in a heavily pretreated patient population (n=24) with a high degree of proteasome inhibitor (PI) and IMiD refractoriness. Patients were treated starting from October 2015. The median age at treatment initiation was 67 years (range 49-87) and the number of prior lines of treatment was 5 (range 2-17) with a median interval from initial diagnosis of 6.3 years (range 2.1-15.2). Fourteen patients (58%) had high risk cytogenetic aberrations (del17p, t4;14, t14;16, +1q [>3 copies]) according to fluorescence in situ hybridization diagnosed at any time before FVD initiation and 11 of 20 patients (55%) evaluable for ISS at diagnosis had stage II/III disease. PI and IMiD refractoriness was present in 13 (54%) and 21 (88%) patients, respectively. Twelve patients (50%) were refractory to BTZ and 7 (29%) to carfilzomib (CFZ); 6 patients (25%) were double refractory to BTZ and CFZ. However, only 2 (8%) and 3 (13%) had received BTZ or CFZ, respectively, as part of their last line of therapy before FVD. In 22 evaluable patients, overall response rate (≥ PR; ORR) was 32% (7 of 22) and clinical benefit rate (≥ MR; CBR) was 50% (11 of 22). The median progression free survival (PFS) in the overall population was 3.3 months with median overall survival (OS) immature for reporting. Marked differences between BTZ sensitive and BTZ refractory patients were observed. ORR was 64% (7 of 11) vs. 0% (0 of 11) and CBR was 73% (8 of 11) vs. 36% (4 of 11), respectively; 73% (8 of 11) of the BTZ refractory patients achieved at least SD. Median PFS was 6.3 vs. 1.7 months and median OS immature vs. 5.1 months in BTZ sensitive and BTZ refractory patients, respectively. Interestingly, the only patient refractory to CFZ but sensitive to BTZ (6 prior lines of therapy) achieved VGPR and PFS of 6.3 months, suggesting discrete mechanisms of resistance to different PIs. Fatigue/asthenia was reported by 82% of patients and was mainly CTCAE grade 2 (52%); however, 3 patients had grade 3 fatigue/asthenia with reduced fluid intake resulting in deterioration of renal function, reduced vigilance and inpatient admission. Thrombopenia occurred in 96% and was mainly CTCAE grade 3/4 (32% and 37%, respectively). Diarrhea was reported by 19% and was CTCAE grade 1/2 in all cases. Peripheral neuropathy newly occurred or worsened in 29% with 24% CTCAE grade 1/2. Other adverse events with CTCAE grade ≥ 3 were atrial fibrillation (2x), liver failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, gastroenteritis, hypocalcemia, syncope, hypotension and post-surgical bleeding. Dose reductions with regard to the PANORAMA trial dosing schedule (San-Miguel JF et al., Lancet Oncol, 2014) were performed either upfront in patients deemed unable to tolerate full doses or during the course of treatment due to adverse events. Nineteen patients (79%) started with full dose PAN; doses were reduced and/or discontinued either upfront or during treatment in 14 patients (58%). In conclusion, FVD showed efficacy in a heavily pretreated MM patient population with a high degree of high risk patients according to cytogenetics and patients refractory to novel agents including PI. With dose reductions in a significant proportion, treatment was tolerated by most patients. However, caution should be exercised especially in elderly patients with restricted general condition where upfront dose reduction seems an appropriate measure to reduce the risk of severe adverse events. Efficacy also in patients refractory to the second generation PI CFZ warrants further investigation of FVD in this difficult to treat patient population. Respiratory allergies are one of the most common and severe allergic pathologies in children. Our observations showed that bronchial asthma is formed in more than 80% of children through the stage of pre-asthma. However, its early diagnosis and adequate treatment in 90% of cases can prevent the transition to bronchial asthma. In this regard, the problem of studying the methods of early diagnosis of pre-asthma and ways to prevent its transformation into bronchial asthma is urgent and practically significant. Since the formation of pre-asthma and bronchial asthma is based on a violation of the function of external respiration, the purpose of our work was, firstly, to study the function of external respiration in case of pre-asthma, and secondly, to determine the diagnostic value of various methods for studying FVD in this pathology in children.

A three-lane traffic flow model is proposed to investigate the effect of car accidents on the traffic flow. The model is an extension of the full velocity difference (FVD) model by taking into account the lane changing. The extended lane-changing rules are presented to model the lane-changing behaviour. The cases that the car accidents occupy the exterior or interior lane, the medium lane, and two lanes are studied by numerical simulations. The time-space diagrams and the current diagrams are presented, and the traffic jams are investigated. The results show that the car accident has a different effect on the traffic flow when it occupies different lanes. The car accidents have a more serious effect on the whole road when they occupy two lanes. The larger the density is, the greater the influence on the traffic flow becomes.

In this paper, a new car-following model is proposed by considering the global average optimal velocity difference effect on the basis of the full velocity difference (FVD) model. We investigate the influence of the global average optimal velocity difference on the stability of traffic flow by making use of linear stability analysis. It indicates that the stable region will be enlarged by taking the global average optimal velocity difference effect into account. Subsequently, the mKdV equation near the critical point and its kink–antikink soliton solution, which can describe the traffic jam transition, is derived from nonlinear analysis. Furthermore, numerical simulations confirm that the effect of the global average optimal velocity difference can efficiently improve the stability of traffic flow, which show that our new consideration should be taken into account to suppress the traffic congestion for car-following theory.

At present 24.4% of the Dutch population has an immigration background of which 13.9% has a non-western migration background and almost 50% of all the people with a migration background are second-generation migrants born in the Netherlands. However, today’s Dutch multicultural society is associated with a complex range of challenges linked with cultural and religious diversity. This article investigates how news media in the Netherlands facilitated the making of the licitness of xenophobic rhetoric of the two main Dutch populist right-wing parties Partij voor de Vrijheid (PVV) and Forum voor Democratie (FvD) during the Provincial Elections in March 2019. I conclude that these rising political extremist movements dominate the immigration debate and are accountable for the making of the licit social resentment against particularly non-western immigrants.

This paper illustrates two novel methods for computing the small-strain hysteretic material damping ratio, λmin, of soils from the cyclic torsional shear (TS) and computing the small-strain viscous material damping ratio, Dmin, from the free-vibration decay (FVD) testing. Both λmin and Dmin are challenging to measure, due to the significant level of ambient noise at small strains (<10−4%). A two-step method is proposed combining the Fourier Transform and a phase-based data fitting method for torsional shear testing, and this method can effectively eliminate the ambient noise at small strains. A Hilbert Transform-based method is proposed for the free-vibration decay testing in order to achieve a more accurate measurement of the viscous material damping ratio, D, at different strain levels, especially at small strains. The improved λmin and Dmin at small strains are compared to data available in the literature. The two novel methods are shown to be accurate in computing the small-strain damping ratios.

In this paper, the car following model is investigated by considering the vehicle dynamics in a cyber physical view. In fact, that driving is a typical cyber physical process which couples the cyber aspect of the vehicles' information and driving decision tightly with the dynamics and physics of the vehicles and traffic environment. However, the influence from the physical (vehicle) view was been ignored in the previous car following models. In order to describe the car following behavior more reasonably in real traffic, a new car following model by considering vehicle dynamics (for short, D-CFM) is proposed. In this paper, we take the full velocity difference (FVD) car following model as a case. The stability condition is given on the base of the control theory. The analytical method and numerical simulation results show that the new models can describe the evolution of traffic congestion. The simulations also show vehicles with a more actual acceleration of starting process than early models.
