Plague bacteria (Yersinia pestis) are transmitted to susceptible mammals by fleas. At least 25 flea species found in North America have been identified as plague vectors. The most efficient flea vector is the Oriental rat flea Xenopsylla cheopis, while the cat flea Ctenocephalides felis is a poor vector. The factors that determine vector competence of different fleas are not known. The main obstacles that the bacteria must overcome in the flea gut are also unknown. Hepatoblasts are bipotential fetal liver cells that differentiate into hepatocytes and cholangiocytes, the parenchymal cell types in the adult liver. While genes that regulate hepatoblast differentiation have been identified, less is known about the underlying regulatory networks. Transcriptome studies using mouse whole fetal livers have been undertaken to decipher those networks. Mucin proteins provide the first line of defence against pathogens in most organisms and are being explored for their use in the pharmaceutical industry. Sea anemone species produce large amounts of mucus, but their diversity and applications have not been examined. My research demonstrated that sea anemones possess a diverse repertoire of mucin proteins, some of which will provide natural products for pharmacological, clinical and cosmetic applications.

Previously, we used a subtractive hybridization assay, in which cDNA of embryonic day 10.5 (E10.5) rat neural tube was subtracted from cDNA of postnatal day 1 (P1) rat brain, to identify genes preferentially expressed in early neural tube. Neural stem cell marker 1 (NSC1) gene was identified in this assay and was hypothesized as a membrane receptor. In this project, I intended to detect the expression pattern of NSC1.
