In 1941, George Y. Shevelov prepared a chapter on the syntax of clauses in the Ukrainian language for a textbook published, however, ten years later. During World War II, Shevelov fled westward, and in the late 1940s, his intent to print the paper on the clause syntax in German translation failed. Shevelov’s book Narys suchasnoї ukraїnsʹkoї literaturnoї movy, which appeared in Munich in 1951, contained a section on syntax based on his study of clause structure. The same year the volume Kurs suchasnoї ukraїnsʹkoї literaturnoї movy. Syntaksys edited by Bulakhovsʹkyi came out in Kyiv. It starts w

<em>The paper addresses George Y. Shevelov’s linguistic studies on Pavlo Tychyna’s poetic language and style. This problem was in the focus of Shevelov’s PhD thesis, written in 1936–1939 under Leonid Bulakhovs’kyj’s supervision and defended at the University of Kharkiv. Although the typescript in question is now considered to be lost, some chapters of it are available in the form of three lengthy articles published in 1940–1941. This makes it possible to analyze Shevelov’s early research into Tychyna’s oeuvre within the entire corpus of his studies on poetic language and style, especially from

Dispalatalization of the Common Slavic *r’ refers to a phonological innovation realized on broad Slavic territory in the 10th—13th century. In Ukrainian, it did not encompass the Carpathian region, e.g., the Hutsul dialect and its Kryvorivnia dialect in particular. I argue that the tendency toward intrasyllabic harmony serves as a requirement for a lack of dispa latalization of Common Slavic *r’ in the Kryvorivnia dialect. I reinterpret the concept of intrasyllabic harmony as first outlined by Roman Jakobson and further explored by George Y. Shevelov with respect to the tonality feature of fla
