Glaucoma is a progressive disease of the optic nerve that can result in visual impairment and in tum inhibit performance on everyday visual tasks. Three connected experimental studies described in this thesis primarily aim to investigate the performance of people with glaucoma on a computer-based task of reading whilst simultaneously recording eye movements. Fifty four patients with bilateral glaucoma and 40 age-similar people with normal vision took part in the experiments. It is a group of optic neuropathies that is found to be associated with autoimmunity. Även om det finns flera orsaker till glaukom så finns det bara en orsak som kan behandlas, ögontrycket, som ska sänkas med hjälp av ögondroppar. För att kunna bromsa försämringen i patientens sjukdom så krävs det god medverkan av patienten, som noggrant behöver följa läkarens ordination.

The purpose of the study was to assess the level of knowledge about glaucoma among the patients who attend the CBN staff eye clinic in Abuja. An exploratory, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted on adult CBN staff members and their eligible dependants. Data on demographics and knowledge of glaucoma were collected using a pre-tested structured questionnaire. One hundred and forty five respondents (100% return) participated in the study.
