Artek was founded in November 1935. The name of the company, Art + Technology, reflects its objectives and methods of operation. The intention was to offer to its wide range of customers, practical, economical, hygienic and above all Modern furniture that reflected its own time. The furniture was to represent the values of an urban and efficient lifestyle. In the company’s founding meeting on 26.11.1935, Maire Gullichsen and Alvar Aalto became the main shareholders. Other shareholders were: Nils–Gustaf Hahl, Artek’s first managing director; P.W. Puhakka, the managing director of Huonekalu- ja Rakennustyötehdas, the company that produced the furniture designed by Aalto; Aino Marsio–Aalto; architect Aili–Salli Ahde; professor Carl Hahl; and architect Arne Ervi.

Анотація:
We develop and test the idea that public appreciation for authentic lowbrow culture affords an effective way for certain elites to address feelings of authenticity-insecurity arising from “high status denigration” (Hahl and Zuckerman 2014). This argument, which builds on recent sociological research on the “search for authenticity” (e.g., Grazian 2005) and on Bourdieu’s (1993) notion of artistic “disinterestedness,” is validated through experiments with U.S. subjects in the context of “outsider” art (Fine 2004). The first study demonstrates that preference for lowbrow culture perceived to be authentic is higher when individuals feel insecure in their authenticity because they attained status in a context where extrinsic incentives are salient. The second study demonstrates that audiences perceive the members of erstwhile denigrated high-status categories to be more authentic if they consume lowbrow culture, but only if the cultural producer is perceived as authentic. We conclude by noting how this “authenticity-by-appreciation” effect might be complementary to distinction-seeking as a motivation for elite cultural omnivorousness, and we draw broader implications for when and why particular forms of culture are in demand.

This paper aims to investigate how the Satire programs Hasb-e-Haal (Statusquo, 2009), and KhabarDar (vigilant, 2017) produced and aired on private Pakistan Television channels influenced and formed a perception of the viewers about political issues persisted at that historical moment of time. With the comedic revelations of politicians' immoral behavior and corruption, this paper unfolds the unethical attitude of the journalists and the TV channels that lean towards political parties for their personal interests. It was found that the Express-News' Khabardar has friendly coverage towards PTI and its personalities and antagonistic towards PML-N and its political figures. Dunya News' Hasb-e-Hall coverage is opposite to the former. The performers posed as politicians use derogatory language to the opponents. A cynical comedy about political personalities plays a major role in opinion building and changing the political attitude of the masses and thus influence their voting behavior.

Two cDNAs encoding an abundant chicken muscle extracellular matrix (ECM)-associated laminin-binding protein (LBP) have been isolated and sequenced. The predicted primary amino acid sequence includes a probable signal peptide and a site for N-linked glycosylation, but lacks a hydrophobic segment long enough to span the membrane. The COOH terminus consists of an unusual repeat of 33 consecutive aspartate residues. Comparison with other sequences indicates that this protein is different from previously described LBPs and ECM receptors. RNA blot analysis of LBP gene expression showed that LBP mRNA was abundant in skeletal and heart muscle, but barely detectable in other tissues. Blots of chicken genomic DNA suggest that a single gene encodes this LBP. The amino acid sequence and mRNA distribution are consistent with the biochemical characterization described by Hall and co-workers (Hall, D. E., K. A. Frazer, B. C. Hahn, and L. F. Reichardt. 1988. J. Cell Biol. 107:687-697). These analyses indicate that LBP is an abundant ECM-associated muscle protein with an unusually high negative charge that interacts with both membranes and laminin, and has properties of a peripheral, not integral membrane protein. Taken together, our studies show that muscle LBP is a secreted, peripheral membrane protein with an unusual polyaspartate domain. Its laminin and membrane binding properties suggest that it may help mediate muscle cell interactions with the extracellular matrix. We propose the name "aspartactin" for this LBP.

Interaction of organyltriphenylphosphonium halides with potassium dihalogenodicyanoaurates in water followed by recrystallization of reaction products from acetonitrile or DMSO has been used to synthesize gold(III) ionic complexes [Ph3PMe][Au(CN)2Cl2] (1), [Ph3PCH2Ph][Au(CN)2Cl2] (2), [Ph3PC6H11-cyclo][Au(CN)2Br2] (3), and [Ph4P][Au(CN)2I2] (4), which have been structurally characterized by the X-ray analysis method (CIF files CCDC No. 1901681 (1), 1912903 (2), 1912919 (3), 2048146 (4)). According to the X-ray data crystals 1–4 consist of centrosymmetric square-planar [Au(CN)2Hal2]– anions (the Au–Hal average bond lengths are 2.417(3) Å (1), 2.280(2) Å (2), 2.4203(13) Å (3), and 2.6035(10) Å (4); the Au–C average bond lengths are 2.06(2) Å (1), 2.010(7) Å (2), 2.009(7) Å (3,) and 1.998(6) Å (4)); the phosphorus atoms in organyltriphenylphosphonium cations have a slightly distorted tetrahedral coordination (the P–C bond lengths are 1.782(9)-1.806(8) Å (1), 1.788(4)-1.813(5) Å (2), 1.790(5)-1.813(5) Å (3) and 1.793(6)-1.799(5) Å (4)). The structural organization in crystals 2–4 is caused by the interionic С–H∙∙∙N≡C hydrogen bonds (C–HPh∙∙∙N≡C 2.56 Å (2); C–HPh∙∙∙N≡C 2.43–2.59 Å, C–Hcyclohexyl∙∙∙N≡C 2.47 Å (3), C–HPh∙∙∙N≡C 2.63 Å (4)), while in crystals 1 no significant interionic contacts are observed.

Purpose Hail risk management is essential for successful farm management in German fruit production, particularly because hail events and associated losses have increased in recent years. The purpose of this paper is to conduct a detailed risk analysis comparing different strategies to manage hail risk, taking into account farmers’ risk aversion and farm-specific conditions. Design/methodology/approach Within an expected utility framework, two different strategies for managing hail risk are compared: one belonging to the group of financial instruments (hail insurance) and the other to the group of technical instruments (anti-hail net). A unique data set comprising a ten-year time series of orchard-specific hail damage and hail insurance data is used. Findings For orchards with low local hail risk and low yield potential, not using hail risk mitigation is most efficient. For orchards with high local hail risk and high yield potential, anti-hail nets provide the highest certainty equivalents. For orchards with high local risk, but low yield potential, hail insurance is most efficient. For orchards, with low local risk, but high yield potential, the certainty equivalents are higher for anti-hail net, when the farmer is risk neutral or slightly risk-averse. With increasing risk aversion, hail insurance is most efficient, which can be explained by the greater degree of the instrument’s flexibility. Originality/value The novelty of the study lies in the direct comparison of the risk effects of anti-hail nets and hail insurance in fruit production.

Abstract A field research campaign, the Hail Spatial and Temporal Observing Network Effort (HailSTONE), was designed to obtain physical high-resolution hail measurements at the ground associated with convective storms to help address several operational challenges that remain unsatisfied through public storm reports. Field phases occurred over a 5-yr period, yielding hail measurements from 73 severe thunderstorms [hail diameter ≥ 1.00 in. (2.54 cm)]. These data provide unprecedented insight into the hailfall character of each storm and afford a baseline to explore the representativeness of the climatological hail database and hail forecasts in NWS warning products. Based upon the full analysis of HailSTONE observations, hail sizes recorded in Storm Data as well as hail size forecasts in NWS warnings frequently underestimated the maximum diameter hailfall occurring at the surface. NWS hail forecasts were generally conservative in size and at least partially calibrated to incoming hail reports. Storm mode played a notable role in determining the potential range of maximum hail size during the life span of each storm. Supercells overwhelmingly produced the largest hail diameters, with smaller maximum hail sizes observed as convection became progressively less organized. Abstract. In Switzerland, hail regularly occurs in multi-day hail clusters. The atmospheric conditions prior to and during multi-day hail clusters are described and contrasted to the conditions prior to and during isolated hail days. The analysis focuses on hail days that occurred between April and September 2002–2019 within 140 km of the Swiss radar network. Hail days north and south of the Alps are defined using a minimum area threshold of a radar-based hail product. Multi-day clusters are defined as 5 d windows containing 4 or 5 hail days and isolated hail days as 5 d windows containing a single hail day. The reanalysis ERA-5 is used to study the large-scale flow in combination with objectively identified cold fronts, atmospheric blocking events, and a weather type classification. Both north and south of the Alps, isolated hail days have frequency maxima in May and August–September, whereas clustered hail days occur mostly in July and August. Composites of atmospheric variables indicate a more stationary and meridionally amplified atmospheric flow both north and south of the Alps during multi-day hail clusters. On clustered hail days north of the Alps, blocks are more frequent over the North Sea, and surface fronts are located farther from Switzerland than on isolated hail days. Clustered hail days north of the Alps are also characterized by significantly higher most unstable convective available potential energy (MUCAPE) values, warmer daily maximum surface temperatures, and higher atmospheric moisture content than isolated hail days. Hence, both stationary flow conditions and anomalous amounts of moisture are necessary for multi-day hail clusters on the north side. In contrast, differences in MUCAPE on the south side between clustered hail days and isolated hail days are small. The mean sea level pressure south of the Alps is significantly deeper, the maximum temperature is colder, and local moisture is significantly lower on isolated hail days. Both north and south of the Alps, the upper-level atmospheric flow over the eastern Atlantic is meridionally more amplified 3 d prior to clustered hail days than prior to isolated days. Moreover, blocking occurs prior to more than 10 % of clustered hail days over Scandinavia, but no blocks occur prior to isolated hail days. Half of the clustered hail days south of the Alps are also clustered north of the Alps. On hail days clustering only south of the Alps, fronts are more frequently located on the Alpine ridge, and local low-level winds are stronger. The temporal clustering of hail days is coupled to specific synoptic- and local-scale flow conditions; this information may be exploited for short- to medium-range forecasts of hail in Switzerland.

Abstract Thunderstorms that produce surface hail accumulations, sometimes as large as 60 cm in depth, have significantly affected the residents of the Front Range and High Plains of Colorado and Wyoming by creating hazardous road conditions and endangering lives and property. To date, surface hail accumulation is not part of a routine forecasting or monitoring system. Extensive coordinated hail accumulation reports and operational products designed to identify deep hail accumulating storms in real time are lacking. Kalina et al. used dual-polarization WSR-88D radar observations to calculate hail depth and hail accumulations but never validated the algorithm. This study shows how 20 quality-controlled hail depth reports from the hail depth database built by the Colorado Hail Accumulation from Thunderstorms (CHAT) project are being used to validate the Kalina et al. radar-based hail accumulation algorithm for operational application. The validated algorithm shows increased correlations between radar-derived and reported accumulations for hail depth reports not included in the validation. Furthermore, increases in computational efficiency have allowed the improved algorithm to be used operationally. With an improved hail accumulation algorithm, thunderstorms that produce hail accumulations are more frequently detected than previously reported.

Abstract Day-ahead (20–22 h) 3-km grid spacing convection-allowing model forecasts are performed for a severe hail event that occurred in Denver, Colorado, on 8 May 2017 using six different multimoment microphysics (MP) schemes including: the Milbrandt–Yau double-moment (MY2), Thompson (THO), NSSL double-moment (NSSL), Morrison double-moment graupel (MOR-G) and hail (MOR-H), and Predicted Particle Properties (P3) schemes. Hail size forecasts diagnosed using the Thompson hail algorithm and storm surrogates predict hail coverage. For this case hail forecasts predict the coverage of hail with a high level of skill but underpredict hail size. The storm surrogate updraft helicity predicts the coverage of severe hail with the most skill for this case. Model data are analyzed to assess the effects of microphysical treatments related to rimed ice. THO uses diagnostic equations to increase the size of graupel within the hail core. MOR-G and MOR-H predict small rimed ice aloft; excessive size sorting and increased fall speeds cause MOR-H to predict more and larger surface hail than MOR-G. The MY2 and NSSL schemes predict large, dense rimed ice particles because both schemes predict separate hail and graupel categories. The NSSL scheme predicts relatively little hail for this case; however, the hail size forecast qualitatively improves when the maximum size of both hail and graupel is considered. The single ice category P3 scheme only predicts dense hail near the surface while above the melting layer large concentrations of low-density ice dominate.

The Music Academy of the West was founded in 1947 by German operatic soprano and lieder singer, Lotte Lehmann and Otto Klemperer and has evolved to be regularly lauded as the “Julliard of the West.” Because their 1970s, 350-seat Recital Hall could no longer properly serve as a suitable recital hall or rehearsal hall, MCH was retained in 2005 to design a full overhaul to ensure the hall could wonderfully serve ensembles ranging from 2 or 3 musicians to the 70-piece Santa Barbara Symphony in rehearsal. It serves now as the home of Marilyn Horne’s Vocal Institute. We present our design process that involved major reshaping, mitigating rail traffic 300 ft away, a new HVAC system, a sensitive re-do of the copious stage (including mitigating practice rooms below), designing novel recital screens, providing variable acoustics and an 11th hour effort to accommodate “Met Live!”.

Abstract Hail size records are analyzed at 2254 stations in China and a hail size climatology is developed based on gridded hail observations for the period 1960–2015. It is found that the annual percentiles of hail size records changed sharply and national-wide after 1980, therefore two periods, 1960–79 and 1980–2015, are studied. There are some similarities between the two periods in terms of the characteristics of hail size such as the spatial distribution patterns of mean annual maximum hail size and occurrence week of annual maximum hail size. The 1980–2015 period had higher observation density than the 1960–79 period, but showed smaller mean annual maximum hail size, especially in northern China. In the majority of grid boxes, the annual maximum hail size experienced a decreasing trend during the 1980–2015 period. A Gumbel extreme value model is fitted to each grid box to estimate the return periods of maximum hail size. The scale and location parameter of the fitted Gumbel distributions are higher in eastern China than in western China, thereby reflecting a greater likelihood of large hail in eastern China. In southern China, the maximum hail size exceeds 127 mm for a 10-yr return period, whereas in northern China maximum hail size exceeds this threshold for a 50-yr return period. The Gumbel model is found to potentially underestimate the maximum hail size for certain return periods, but provides a more informed picture of the spatial distribution of extreme hail size and the regional differences.
