In June 2007 David Summers was digging in his garden at Wroughton (NGR SU 14778117), just south of Swindon, Wiltshire, when he noticed a small bifacial flint tool. Realising that it was something interesting he e-mailed photographs to Devizes Museum where the now-retired curator, Paul Robinson, identified it as a Lower Palaeolithic hand-axe. The implement is a small pointed bifacial tool, conforming exactly to Wymer's (1968) type F hand-axes; it measures 60 mm long, 47 mm wide and is 29 mm thick. The object is unrolled, suggesting that it had not moved far from the point where it was dropped, but is heavily stained. Nothing like it was known from the immediate area although hand-axes have been recorded from the summit of Hackpen Hill, 7 km to the south (Roe 1968) with others, including small implements, from one of the most prolific sites in Britain at Knowle Farm (Roe 1968) on the edge of Savernake Forest. It was suggested that the present author might be interested in the axe and could perhaps tell him more about it. Some digital photographs were duly received and confirmed, with a caveat that the comment was being made from photos, that the object did, indeed, appear to be a small hand-axe. It was added to the County Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) and was also taken to the British Museum, where it was confirmed as a hand-axe. Nick Ashton, Curator of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Collections, also commenting from photographs, considered that it certainly looked like a hand-axe but contributed that the back garden provenance was unusual and suggested that it may have been originally found elsewhere.

This paper describes the context and nature of an assemblage of forty-four Palaeolithic hand-axes from a Roman religious site at Witham, Essex. The hand-axes are considered to have been derived from several sources, and it is suggested that the Romano-British occupants of the site deliberately selected them for their shape and placed them in the bottom of two large man-made depressions. In the light of stone axe finds on continental temple sites, and of classical Roman texts and traditions, the possibility arises that the Witham finds may have represented ‘thunderbolts’ in the worship of Jupiter or a local Celtic equivalent.

Why do high school history books mention Carry Nation and not other women (and there were many) who marched into saloons with hatchets, pokers, Bibles, and off-key accordians? And why is it that these history textbooks caricature her as a masculinized and menopausal megalomaniac rather than as a religiously inspired reformer who gave voice to the hopes of thousands of people longing for an alcohol-free promised land? The answer to the first question lies in Nation's own genius at self-promotion and her remarkably media-genic personality. She had undeniable charisma and a certain brilliance in making the most out of it. The answer to the second question lies in the even greater success of entrepreneurs who manipulated her public appeal to their own profit-making advantage by luridly packaging her personality and Crusade with brassy embellishments and blatant untruths. The commercial culture she sought to manipulate, in the end, got the best of her: retailers, reporters, and her so-called managers twisted her image to fit their own desires to turn a quick profit.

Abstract: Cicero and Quintilian were critics of oratory who knew Greek well. They both have much to say about Demosthenes and are important figures in the history of Demosthenic scholarship. Cicero discusses Demosthenes mainly in the Orator, which he wrote primarily as an answer to the Atticists and as a defence of his own oratory. His comments, therefore, tend to be tendentious and to reflect Ciceronian praetiee more than that of Demosthenes. Quintilian, on the other hand, who was a critic rather than a practicing orator and who does not have an “axe to grind,” makes many perceptive comments about Demosthenic oratory.

Abstract Materials obtained during investigation of Scythian burial-mound 7 in the “Vodovod” group in 2017 near the village of Glinoye in the Slobozia District on the east bank of the Lower Dniester are published here for the first time. The burial-mound contained five burials – four in pits and one in a catacomb. The burials in pits had been deposited at the turn of the 4th century BC and the catacomb burial dated from the first third of the 3rd century BC. The graves belonged to ordinary members of the community but contained a fairly distinctive range of grave goods. It was made up of weapons (arrowheads and an axe) and horse harness (a bit and a cheek-piece), vessels (a wooden dish, hand-moulded pot and a hand-moulded bowl), tools (knives, awls, a needle, spindle whorls and an abrasive tool) and jewellery (rings, a metal bracelet, beads, pendants made of shell, oolitic limestone and canine teeth of dogs). In addition tassel-holders, a bronze mirror and a flint strike-a-light were found. A bronze ring from burial 7/2 reflects La Tène influence and the hand-moulded cup from burial 7/4 reflects Thracian influence on the material culture of the Scythians in the North-West Pontic region. In general the funerary rite and range of grave goods demonstrate the transformation of Scythian culture during the second half of the 4th and first half of the 3rd century BC.

Plusieurs sites du Paléolithique inférieur découverts dans le Caucase depuis presque un siècle permettent de considérer ce territoire comme un centre de ces cultures. Situé au carrefour de trois mondes – l’Afrique, l’Europe et l’Asie, – le Caucase, notamment la Transcaucasie, représente une zone-clé dans le déroulement des schémas de migrations des premiers hominidés Out-of-Africa vers notre continent. Plusieurs cultures acheuléennes technologiquement et typologiquement très variées coexistent et se développent dans cette région. Cependant, l’élément présent dans tous les assemblages lithiques transcaucasiens est le biface. Dans ce contexte, l’objectif de la thèse est d’apporter des renseignements dans la compréhension du développement du Paléolithique inférieur dans le Caucase par une étude morpho-technologique et typologique des bifaces. Les échantillons de bifaces sélectionnés sont issus des sites du Caucase du sud, notamment de la grotte de Koudaro I (MIS 9-8) et des ensembles des sites acheuléens de plein-air de Lashé-Balta (Ossétie du Sud, Géorgie) et de Dzhraber (Arménie). La grotte de Koudaro I est l’un des rares sites stratifiés, il représente un site de comparaison pour les autres gisements. La classification proposée ici et appliquée aux échantillons est basée sur la distinction des « bifaces », des « pièces bifaciales » et des « pièces considérées comme bifaces » par Vasily P. LYUBIN, responsable de fouille, dans les années 60. Ainsi, à Koudaro I sur 138 pièces considérées comme « bifaces » 27 sont des bifaces complets et partiels fabriqués sur éclat de grès, grès quartzite et schiste, de morphologie lancéolée, ovalaire et amygdaloïde et 58 sont des pièces bifaciales. A Lashé-Balta sur 56 pièces 31 sont des bifaces complets, partiels et des unifaces sur éclat de bombe volcanique en andésite, de types ovalaires, amygdaloïdes et cordiformes et 15 sont des pièces bifaciales. A Dzhraber sur 105 pièces 75 sont des bifaces complets, partiels et des unifaces sur éclat d’obsidienne, de typologie cordiforme, amygdaloïde, ovalaire, lancéolée et 7 sont des pièces bifaciales. Les résultats de comparaison montrent que les bifaces provenant de Koudaro I et de Lashé-Balta sont très proches, malgré la différente nature des matières premières. Les bifaces de Dzhraber, à leur tour, partagent non seulement des caractéristiques techno-typologiques des pièces ossétiennes, mais en grande majorité de celles des pièces en obsidienne de Turquie. Dans ce contexte, la question concernant le rapport « Roche – Technique(s) » se pose.Cette méthodologie a ensuite pu être appliquée sur les bifaces découverts en surface dans les régions de la péninsule de Manguistaou, de la mer d’Aral et des monts Mougodjar au Kazakhstan (lieu de conservation : Institut d’Archéologie A.Kh. Margulan, Almaty). L’étude des collections kazakhstanaises est inédite. Il s’agit des bifaces complets et partiels en grès quartzite et en silex, de morphologie ovalaire et lancéolée provenant des monts Mougodjar et de la péninsule de Manguistaou. Les pièces de la région de la mer d’Aral sont attribuées à une période plus tardive. La comparaison effectuée apporte des éléments nécessaires pour soutenir l’hypothèse d’occupation de l’Eurasie par la voie « Ouest » à travers le Caucase à partir de la première vague de migration et non par la voie « Est ». Elle est renforcée par une étude complémentaire d’une collection sans bifaces des couches acheuléennes du site d’Ulalinka (Altaï de Montagnes, Russie)
Several Lower Palaeolithic sites discovered in the territory of the Caucasus for almost a century give us many arguments to consider this territory as a center of these cultures. Situated at the crossroads of three worlds - Africa, Europe and Asia, - the Caucasus, especially the Transcaucasia, represents a key area in migration ways of the first hominids “Out-of-Africa” to our continent. Many Acheulean cultures, of various technology and typology, coexist and develop in this region. However, the element present in all Transcaucasian lithic assemblages is the hand axe. In this context, the aim of this PhD thesis is to provide information about the Lower Palaeolithic period in the Caucasus. The study is based on the morpho-technological and typological study of the hand axes. Samples of hand axes are from South Caucasus sites, in particular from the Kudaro I cave (MIS 9-8) and the Lashe-Balta (South Ossetia, Georgia) and the Dzhraber (Armenia) groups of surface Acheulean sites. The Kudaro I cave is one of the few stratified sites; it represents a comparison site for other surface site collections.The proposed classification is applied to the samples. It is based on the distinction between "hand axes", "bifacial tools" and "pieces considered as hand axes" by Vasily P. LYUBIN, the head of the excavation, in the 1960s. Therefore, in the Kudaro I cave, among 138 pieces considered as "hand axes" by the researcher only 27 are hand axes, complete and partial, made in sandstone, quartzite sandstone and schist flakes, of a lanceolate, ovate and amygdaloid morphology and 58 are bifacial tools. In the Lashe-Balta group of surface sites, among 56 objects only 31 are hand axes, complete and partial, and unifaces in andesite volcanic bombs, of ovate, amygdaloid and cordiform morphology and 15 bifacial tools. In the Dzhraber group of surface sites, among 105 objects only 75 are hand axes, complete and partial, and unifaces in obsidian flakes, of cordiform, amygdaloid, ovate and lanceolate morphology and 7 bifacial tools. Comparison data show that the hand axes from the Kudaro I cave and from the Lashe-Balta group of surface sites are very close, despite the different nature of the raw materials. The hand axes from the Dzhraber group of surface sites, in turn, share not only the techno-typological features of the Ossetian pieces, but in the vast majority of cases those of the obsidian hand axes from Turkey. Here, the question of the relationship "Rock - Technique(s)" arises.Then, that methodology was applied to the hand axes discovered on the surface in the regions of the Mangystau Peninsula, the Aral Sea and the Mugodzhar Mountains in Kazakhstan (place of conservation: Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Margulan, Almaty). The study of the Kazakh collections is unpublished. The collections from the Mugodzhar Mountains and the Mangystau Peninsula are composed of complete and partial hand axes in quartzite sandstone and in flint, of ovate and lanceolate morphology. The hand axes from the Aral Sea region are attributed to a later period. The comparison provides necessary elements to support the hypothesis of occupation of Eurasia by the first humans of the first migration wave by the "Western" way through the Caucasus and not by the "Eastern" one. It is reinforced by the study of the collection without bifaces from the Acheulean layers of the Ulalinka site (Altai Mountains, Russia)

For the first ten years of my career I practiced my craft — advertising art direction — exclusively by hand. To help me in the design process itself, I hired specialists. For typography, for instance, I chose a firm I admired in Minneapolis where the typographers would hand cut the film negatives letter by letter. In those days — the 1980s — each area of design had master craftsmen. I can remember one day walking into a warehouse with thirty-foot ceilings. On the back wall I saw a large horizontal canvas. The artist was suspended from scaffolding and covered in speckled paint dots. I wasn’t in an artist’s studio looking at a masterpiece half-finished. I was admiring a billboard — a hand painted one-of-a-kind billboard. This is not to say that the old methods of working by hand were entirely idyllic. They had countless drawbacks. IT took several days to put together a layout with Pantone paper and transfer type, only to realize the color combination was wrong and the time wasted. Because processes were slow and labor-intensive, choices were limited. In the mid 1980s, design studios and creative departments started using computers. For the first time I was able to select a color scheme, click a button, and see seemingly endless options instantaneously. It wasn’t long before the skilled craftsmen of type were replaced with digitized fonts loaded directly onto hard drives. Suddenly, the idea of working type by hand became economically unfeasible. The typographers closed up shop, threw out their old tools, and went out to look for new jobs. Several years later billboards were being painted on vinyl sheets right from our electronic files. Perfect replications of the original reproduced with speed and precision saved time and manpower. The new process had replaced the billboard artists almost overnight. I saw a generation of artisans exchanged for a generation of desktop publishers. Just like the craftsmen of the past, older methods of graphic design have been cast aside finding their way uneasily into the category of fine art. And now fine art, too, may cast them aside. Recently the Dean of the Fine Arts Program at Virginia Commonwealth University has held several meetings where he discussed the elimination of older printmaking methods in order to expand digital printmaking. Computers, it seems, will not be simply content with displacing the old hand processes; they want to eliminate them. For most young designers the computer has completely replaced the hand in every stage of the design process. I’ve noticed in many cases designers aren’t problem solving outside of the computer. It isn’t even considered. Certainly, the goal and outcome of my creative project were not intended to revive antiquated hand methods, at least as they historically existed. But hopefully, I’ve created something original by combining both hand methods and modern technology. If nothing else, I want younger designers to think beyond the 20GB hard drive as the only tool in their process.

Searches for pulsars during the past fifty years, have been characterised by two problems making their discovery difficult: i) an increasing volume of data to be searched, and ii) an increasing number of `candidate' pulsar detections arising from that data, requiring analysis. Whilst almost all are caused by noise or interference, these are often indistinguishable from real pulsar detections. Deciding which candidates should be studied is therefore difficult. Indeed it has become known as the `candidate selection problem'. This thesis presents an interdisciplinary study of the selection problem, with the aim of developing a new method able to mitigate it. Specifically for future pulsar surveys undertaken with the Square kilometre Array (SKA). Through a combination of critical literature evaluations, theoretical modelling exercises, and empirical investigations, the selection problem is described in-depth here for the first time. It is shown to be characterised by the dominance of Gaussian distributed noise signals, a factor that no existing selection method accounts for. It also reveals the presence of a significant trend in survey data rates, which suggest that candidate selection is transitioning from an off-line processing procedure, to an on-line, and real-time, decision making process. In response, a new real-time machine learning based method, the GH-VFDT, is introduced in this thesis. The results presented here show that a significant improvement in selection performance can be achieved using the GH-VFDT, which utilises a learning procedure optimised for data characterised by skewed class distributions. Whilst the principled development of new numerical features that maximise the separation between pulsars and Gaussian noise, have also greatly improved GH-VFDT pulsar recall. It is therefore concluded that the sub-optimal performance of existing selection systems, is due to a combination of poor feature design, insensitivity to noise, and an inability to deal with skewed class distributions.

Government Organized Non-Governmental Organizations (GONGOs), once common during the Soviet-era, are now increasingly resurfacing under the Putin administration. Once completely abolished from Russia, these deceitful organizations are accompanying various new laws signed by President Putin in the Russian Federation. While Russia does not claim to be a liberal democracy with a free civil society and Putin has described his state as a “managed democracy,” the puzzle still remains why the Putin administration is secretly using organizations to fulfill government ploys. This thesis will analyze the types of GONGOs along with new laws and policies signed into effect under the Putin and Medvedev Administration. I conclude this thesis by partially confirming my hypothesis that president Putin is rationally choosing to create these organizations in an effort to consolidate his power and promote Russian culture.

This thesis explores young people's experiences of contemporary, commercial media. It aims to provide a holistic understanding of new and more traditional media use. Moving beyond media effects, it takes an active consumer-centred approach, contextualising ‘new media’ consumption within the everyday lifestyles of young people. It compares and contrasts practitioner tactics with young people's lived experiences of internet and mobile use. The study draws its theoretical framework from the fields of communication studies, consumer behaviour, cultural studies, marketing, sociology and social psychology. Initial fieldwork consisted of 15 interviews with ‘expert’ agency practitioners, investigating perceptions of youth marketing and the tactics deployed. The main consumer phase explored the mediated experiences of adolescents aged 13-17. A total of 175 secondary school pupils completed self-completion questionnaire, a smaller sample then contributing a time-based diary. Beyond the quantitative fieldwork, 45 pupils participated in the qualitative phase, guided by the principles of phenomenology. Photo-elicitation and psycho-drawing techniques were utilised to enrichen discussions. Young people were found to have a complex range of ‘new-media’ experiences, embedded in their ‘in home’ and ‘out of home’ lifestyles. Their active use of the internet, for mood enhancement, experiential learning, escapism and communication, rarely encompassed commercial motivations. Of several barriers to ‘new-media’ use, online practitioner tactics caused the greatest concern. For many young people, such actions were deeply de-motivating, constituting an unwanted intrusion, in contrast to the symbiotic relationship synonymous with traditional advertising. Their consequent elusiveness is epitomised through the metaphor “sand in the hand”.

A substantial body of science fiction authors, critics and fans appreciate the literary attention the New Wave of the '60s and '70s brought to the genre of science fiction, but regret the seemingly lasting move away from the hard science classics of the '50s and before. They argue that "the hard stuff' is at the very heart of sf and that its future—still on the path set by the New Wave—is ostensibly a dead end. Many important critics along with hundreds of sf fan websites display this fatalistic concern, asking over and over "Is hard science fiction dead?" The answer is no. These reactionaries suffer from a serious case of the Good Old Days Syndrome (not to mention the Good Old Boys Syndrome). A close look at the state of the genre reveals that hard sf is not only alive and well but also that contemporary hard sf is more in line with its critics' definition of hard sf than the very stories they cite as exemplars of it. Contrary to the accusations of noted sf critics, it may well be that a new golden age of sf is dawning, one with an even truer scientific core as well as a commitment to literary quality. This thesis will expose the curious contradiction between the hard and soft / old and new sf. The introduction will examine the definition of hard sf and declarations of its unfortunate demise. Each of three chapters will compare two stories—one from sf s Golden Age and another after the supposed death of the genre. In each, I will show how classic examples of hard sf regularly fail to meet the objective, scientific criteria they purport to uphold and how contemporary stories—even while focusing (to varying degrees) on the political and personal—better espouse the principles of hard sf. Ultimately, it seems that those who descry hard sf s death miss not the technical aspects of hard sf that, even by their definition, distinguish it from softer sf, but the traditional Golden Age values of male dominance, imperialism, and anti-emotionalism. Newer stories' feminism and redefinitions of progress blind conventional readers to their truly hard-core, science-based foundations. The conclusion will consider what hard sf s paradigm shifts mean in terms of our evolving relationship to science. Specifically, in our technological age, science is not merely a field that studies how things work, but a field that can help us to illuminate and interpret our place in the universe. Ultimately, hard science fiction is not dead, it's just doing something different from what it used to.

In Sri Lanka, firewood is regarded as a common conventional fuel, mainly in food preparation purposes. Essentially due to economically availability, firewood has still been using as the main source to lit fire in rural areas. Other than for household food preparation, firewood is still the main source of generating heat in food related rural industries, such as tea factories, bakeries, hotels etc. In tea factories and in some of the bakeries, firewood is used in mass scales. Even tons of fire wood is used in each of them, per day. To make easy burning, the wood logs need to be cut in to small pieces. In almost all such places, wood splitting is done manually. It finds very difficult to split wood logs by using an axe. This needs time and more manpower. On the other hand, an additional cost is involved for workers’ payment. If the wood splitting can be mechanized, it may be huge beneficial for such industries as tea factories and bakeries etc. Therefore, this project is aimed to introduce a wood splitting machine, which has the specific objectives of efficient supply of usable level firewood at a shorter time with lower cost and without much manpower to split firewood logs. Lower maintenance requirement together with lower failure frequencies may be added advantages, when compared to the hydraulic devices [4].

We present the paradigm of natural and exploratory shape modeling by introducing novel 3D interactions for creating, modifying and manipulating 3D shapes using arms and hands. Though current design tools provide complex modeling functionalities, they remain non-intuitive and require significant training since they segregate 3D shapes into hierarchical 2D inputs, thus binding the user to stringent procedural steps and making modifications cumbersome. In addition the designer knows what to design when they go to CAD systems and the creative exploration in design is lost. We present a shape creation paradigm as an exploration of creative imagination and externalization of shapes, particularly in the early phases of design. We integrate the capability of humans to express 3D shapes via hand-arm motions with traditional sweep surface representation to demonstrate rapid exploration of a rich variety of fairly complex 3D shapes. We track the skeleton of users using the depth data provided by low-cost depth sensing camera (Kinect™). Our modeling tool is configurable to provide a variety of implicit constraints for shape symmetry and resolution based on the position, orientation and speed of the arms. Intuitive strategies for coarse and fine shape modifications are also proposed. We conclusively demonstrate the creation of a wide variety of product concepts and show an average modeling time of a only few seconds while retaining the intuitiveness of communicating the design intent.

Between April 2020 and January 2022, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) commissioned a quarterly survey on consumer handwashing. Key findings from this survey are: Across all waves of the handwashing tracker, participants were most likely to report washing their hands with soap and warm water. However, the proportion who reported handwashing with soap and warm water ‘always’ or ‘most of the time’ declined over time (79% April 2020, compared to 68% in January 2022). Most participants reported washing their hands for between 20 and 24 seconds across all waves. However, the proportion who reported this significantly declined over time (was 35% in April 2020, down to 27% in January 2022). Over time, there was a significant decrease in the proportion of participants who reported ‘always’ washing their hands in the following scenarios inside the home: before cooking/preparing food (72% in April 2020, 62% in January 2022) before eating (48% in April 2020, 42% in January 2022) after handling rubbish (73% in April 2020, 65% in January 2022) when arriving home, after a trip outside of the home (55% in April 2020, 47% in January 2022) Reported handwashing after contact with animals (including pets) remained broadly stable over time. On average, across all waves, 36% of participants with a pet reported washing their hands ‘always’ after contact with animals, (whilst 26% reported doing this ‘most of the time’, 30% reported doing this ‘sometimes’ and 7% reported ‘never’ washing their hands after contact with animals). Over time, there was a significant decrease in the proportion of participants who reported ‘always’ washing their hands in the following scenarios outside of the home: when eating a picnic (35% in July 2020, 29% in January 2022) when consuming a takeaway outside of the home (35% in July 2020, 30% in January 2022) Since a peak in October 2020 (43%), the proportion of participants who reported ‘always’ washing their hands after blowing their nose, sneezing or coughing into their hands gradually declined and was significantly lower in January 2022 (35%). The proportion of participants who reported ‘always’ washing their hands after using the toilet also declined over time. In April 2020 87% of participants reported ‘always’ washing their hands after using the toilet, decreasing significantly to 80% in January 2022. Across all waves, most participants reported carrying and using hand sanitising gel as a hand washing alternative in a range of scenarios, but the proportion who reported doing this declined over time. For example: 55% of participants reported using hand sanitising gel after using public transport in October 2020, declining significantly to 44% in January 2022 54% of participants reported using hand sanitising gel when attending a social event in October 2020, declining significantly to 45% January 2022.

Unification has been investigated both in modal logics and in description logics, albeit with different motivations. In description logics, unification can be used to detect redundancies in ontologies. In this context, it is not sufficient to decide unifiability, one must also compute appropriate unifiers and present them to the user. For the description logic EL, which is used to define several large biomedical ontologies, deciding unifiability is an NP-complete problem. It is known that every solvable EL-unification problem has a minimal unifier, and that every minimal unifier is a local unifier. Existing unification algorithms for EL compute all minimal unifiers, but additionally (all or some) non-minimal local unifiers. Computing only the minimal unifiers would be better since there are considerably less minimal unifiers than local ones, and their size is usually also quite small. In this paper we investigate the question whether the known algorithms for EL-unification can be modified such that they compute exactly the minimal unifiers without changing the complexity and the basic nature of the algorithms. Basically, the answer we give to this question is negative.

This rapid review examines literature around Nature-based Solutions (NbS), what are NbS, the pros and cons of NbS, design and implementation issues (including governance, indigenous knowledge), finance and the enabling environment. The breadth of NbS and the evidence base means that this rapid review only provides a snapshot of the information available, and therefore does not consider all types of NbS, nor all sectors that they have been used in. Considering this limited scope, this report highlights many issues, some of which are that Covid-19 has highlighted the importance of NbS, Pros of NbS include the low cost compared to infrastructure alternatives; the flexibility in addressing multiple climate challenges; potential co-benefits such as better water quality, improved health, cultural benefits, biodiversity conservation. The literature also notes the cons of NbS including slow adaptation or co-benefits, very context specific making effectiveness difficult to measure and many of the benefits are non-monetary and hard to measure. The literature consulted suggest a number of knowledge gaps in the evidence base for NbS effectiveness including lack of: robust and impartial assessments of current NbS experiences; site specific knowledge of field deployment of NbS; timescales over which benefits are seen and experienced; cost-effectiveness of interventions compared to or in conjunction with alternative solutions; and integrated assessments considering broader social and ecological outcomes
