AbstractNutrition and health claims are displayed to influence consumers’ food choices. This study assessed the extent and nature of nutrition and health claims on the front-of-pack of ‘healthy’ and ‘less-healthy’ packaged foods in New Zealand. Foods from eight categories, for which consumption may affect the risk of obesity and diet-related chronic diseases, were selected from the 2014 Nutritrack database. The internationally standardised International Network for Food and Obesity/Non-Communicable Diseases Research, Monitoring and Action Support (INFORMAS) taxonomy was used to classify claims on packages. The Nutrient Profiling Scoring Criterion (NPSC) was used to classify products as ‘healthy’ or ‘less healthy’. In total, 7526 products were included, with 47 % (n 3557) classified as ‘healthy’. More than one-third of products displayed at least one nutrition claim and 15 % featured at least one health claim on the front-of-pack. Claims were found on one-third of ‘less-healthy’ products; 26 % of those products displayed nutrition claims and 7 % featured health claims. About 45 % of ‘healthy’ products displayed nutrition claims and 23 % featured health claims. Out of 7058 individual claims, the majority (69 %) were found on ‘healthy’ products. Cereals displayed the greatest proportion of nutrition and health claims (1503 claims on 564 products), of which one-third were displayed on ‘less-healthy’ cereals. Such claims could be misleading consumers’ perceptions of nutritional quality of foods. It needs to be explored how current regulations on nutrition and health claims in New Zealand could be further strengthened (e.g. using the NPSC for nutrition claims, including general health claims as per the INFORMAS taxonomy) to ensure consumers are protected and not misled.

Abstract The human lifespan and quality of life depend on complex interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Aging research has been remarkably advanced by the development of high-throughput “omics” technologies. Differences between chronological and biological ages, and identification of factors (eg, nutrition) that modulate the rate of aging can now be assessed at the individual level on the basis of telomere length, the epigenome, and the metabolome. Nevertheless, the understanding of the different responses of people to dietary factors, which is the focus of precision nutrition research, remains incomplete. The lack of reliable dietary assessment methods constitutes a significant challenge in nutrition research, especially in elderly populations. For practical and successful personalized diet advice, big data techniques are needed to analyze and integrate the relevant omics (ie, genomic, epigenomic, metabolomics) with an objective and longitudinal capture of individual nutritional and environmental information. Application of such techniques will provide the scientific evidence and knowledge needed to offer actionable, personalized health recommendations to transform the promise of personalized nutrition into reality.

Food!! The word food itself holds a very important role in everyones lives. The food we eat gives us the needed energy to pursue our daily activities and gives us the necessary strength to help boost our immunity. The importance of an adequate nutrition for children below three years cannot be ignored or cut short. The early nutrition practices in a childs life decides, the how the latter years of life turn out. Therefore, it should be a fundamental right of a child to have good nutritional practices from day one. Exclusive breast feeding since very long has been emphasized upon by Governments of various countries, medical practitioners and other involved in maternal and child health sector. If a child gets exclusive breast feed for six months, experts believe that it helps a child to grow healthy and also contributes to overall development of the child. Healthy Nutritional practices play a vital role in health of children especially in children below three years. Healthy nutritional practices are like the steps of a ladder, the stronger the steps the better is the climb for the child. Mothers or the primary care givers are like poles of the ladder which holds the steps together. Therefore, educating a mother or primary care giver about healthy nutritional practices becomes utmost necessity for any society.

In this era of potent medications and major cardiovascular (CV) procedures, the value of nutrition can be forgotten. A healthy diet is essential, regardless of CV risk. Caloric balance is inherent to a good diet. Despite patients who say they eat little, ideal weight can be maintained if calories are burned. Composition is another component of a healthy diet. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and Mediterranean diets provide proof of CV benefit from their specific content. Metabolic syndrome (MS) is associated with poor diet and obesity. A healthy diet with good nutrition benefits the MS patient and associated conditions such as obesity and diabetes. Exercise, in conjunction with a healthy diet and good nutrition, helps maintain optimal weight and provides CV benefit such as decreased inflammation and increased vasodilatation. Whether vitamins or other nutritional supplements are important in a healthy diet is unproven. Nevertheless, the most promising data of added benefit to a healthy diet is with vitamin D. Some dietary supplements also have promise. Alcohol, in moderation, especially red wine, has nutritional and heart protective benefits. Antioxidants, endogenous or exogenous, have received increased interest and appear to play a favorable nutritional role. CV health starts with good nutrition.

Malnutrition, obesity, type 2 diabetes, micronutrient deficiencies, and the increase in non-communicable diseases are among the future European key challenges in health and welfare. Agriculture and rural development policies can positively contribute to a healthier and nutritious supply of food. The objective of the research is to analyze to what extent European 2007–2013 and 2014–2020 rural development programmes address the nexus between agriculture, food, health, and nutrition to respond to the evolving dietary needs. The research carries out a quali-quantitative content analysis on all 210 European rural development programmes. Results show that the interconnection between agriculture, food, health, and nutrition is present, with differences in the European agricultural and rural policy programming periods. The main interlinking issues of the nexus are food safety, food quality, diseases, nutritional aspect, animal health and welfare, plant health, and environmental health. Healthier and nutritious food-related issues are emerging, addressing dietary needs, and sustaining consumer food trends. Healthy and nutritious food is pursued by combating foodborne communicable diseases and non-communicable diseases. The future Common Agricultural Policy, including its rural dimensions, should support the consumption of healthy foods produced in ways that are environmentally and economically sustainable.

Optimized nutrition during the first 1000 days (from conception through the 2nd birthday) is critical for healthy development and a healthy life for the newborn. Pregnancy and the postpartum period are accompanied by physiological changes, increased energy needs, and changing requirements in the nutrients critical for optimal growth and development. Infants and toddlers also experience physiological changes and have specific nutritional needs. Food and nutrition experts can provide women of childbearing age with adequate dietary advice to optimize nutrition, as well as guidance on selecting appropriate dietary supplements. Considering the approaching 2020–2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) will be making specific recommendations for children, it is important to provide accurate scientific information to support health influencers in the field of nutrition. The purpose of this review is to summarize the nutrition and supplementation literature for the first 1000 days; to highlight nutritional and knowledge gaps; and to educate nutrition influencers to provide thoughtful guidance to mothers and families. Optimal nutrition during pregnancy through early childhood is critical for supporting a healthy life. Nutrition influencers, such as dietitians, obstetricians/gynecologists, and other relevant health professionals, should continue guiding supplement and food intake and work closely with expectant families and nutrition gatekeepers.

Healthy nutrition is one of the major topics of our days. The occurrence of the so called “civilization diseases” is increasing continuously as a result of the changes in our nutritional habits and life-style. It was thought that folk nutrition at the beginning of the 19. Century had several beneficial effects on health. For this reason it was decided to study the food and nutritional habits of the population of Hajdu-Bihar County around the 1930s on thebasis of literary sources to see how well they do match with modern requirements of healthy nutrition.

: The study explored cultural concepts of maternal and child health among low-income Filipino mothers, to serve as basis for planning health and nutrition education programs that will achieve behavior change. The objectives were to a) Characterize the following concepts from the point of view of mothers: qualities of a strong healthy mother; qualities of a strong healthy child; and proper nutrition practices to raise strong healthy children; b) Identify concepts that are consistent with good nutrition practices vs. concepts that need to be explained and clarified or corrected, to serve as input for nutrition education programs. : In-depth interviews were conducted among 26 mothers aged 20 to 35 years with children aged 3 to 12 years. Respondents were asked the following questions: a) What do you think are the qualities of a strong healthy child/mom? b) Complete the following sentence: A strong healthy child /mom is ______; c) In your opinion, what nutrition practices are important to have a strong healthy child during this pandemic? : Thematic analysis revealed most mothers believed 1) a strong healthy mother is one who is mentally strong and resilient in the face of problems; 2) a strong healthy child is one who is physically engaged and interacts actively with his/her surroundings; 3) while a healthy diet is important, the best nutrition practice to promote child health is to provide daily vitamin and mineral supplements. Filipino mothers possess cultural health concepts that are not consistent with standard nutritional recommendations.

Many healthcare professionals and their patients are aware of the importance of proper nutrition during pregnancy, but may not be aware of specific nutritional recommendations on how to achieve a healthy pregnancy outcome. This review article aims to discuss the implications maternal nutritional status and weight gain have in both the short and long terms. Babies born to mothers with inadequate weight gain are more likely to be premature and small for gestational age (SGA). They are also predisposed to obesity and metabolic problems later in life. Women with excessive weight gain during pregnancy are at increased risk for developing type II diabetes later in life. Their offspring also have increased body fat as babies and during childhood. Pregnant women need to be informed about appropriate weight gain and how to achieve this, and should be given specific nutritional recommendations and weight-gain goals.Key words: nutritional requirements, healthy eating, weight gain, weight retention, obesity, birth weight.

Nutrition is one of the most significant factors influencing the state of health, the development of diseases and the generally the human longevity. The nature of nutrition, which has a protective effect, is the basis of the healthy diet. Among healthy nutritious rations, there are those that have developed naturally, formed from the cultural food heritage and later were made in scientific nutritional recommendations. These are such diets as the Mediterranean type of food, the Scandinavian diet, the Tibetan style of food, etc. At the same time, there are diets specially developed by specialists for specific purposes. All of them correspond to the basic principles of the healthy diet: balance, usefulness and energy balance. This article offers an overview of the use of individual diets that have been developed by nutritionists, such as the intermittent fasting diet, the Paleo diet, and the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet. The article discusses the differences and advantages of these dietary approaches, presents the results of effectiveness, considers the limitations and features of their use.

Malnutrition is a grave global public health problem and needs serious attention. The prevalence of malnutrition in under 5 years children in India is high. Hence, there is an urgent need to recognize the nutrition and feeding concerns, the gaps in adequate nutrient intake and bridge them to ensure optimum nutritional care in early childhood. Twenty-eight Pediatricians were selected by purposive sampling from Telangana (n=12) and West Bengal (n=16) to form an advisory board. An advisory board meeting was conducted, which included a presentation on preschool nutrition in an Indian perspective. This was followed by a focused group discussion among the team of experts to gather their views on nutrition concerns of the preschoolers. They gave their opinion on how to address these concerns, role of healthy food drinks, the role of novel nutrients such as prebiotics and docosahexaenoic acid in preschoolers and the importance of nutrition education of mothers by healthcare professionals. Further, the board members pointed out the common micronutrient deficiencies such as iron, Vitamins-A and D, excessive intake of sugar and fat, and indicated a need for micronutrient supplementation, healthy alternatives for sugar and fat, views on healthy food drinks among the preschoolers. The advisory board members were unanimous in their belief that it is essential to create awareness and educate mothers about preschool nutrition and for doctors to include some nutrition counseling time for early childhood nutritional care. This would help to improve the nutritional intake which is essential to ensure optimum growth and development during the preschool age for a healthier future.

Obesity is still one of the nutritional problems among Indonesians today. People then want to normalize their nutritional status by adopting certain weight-loss diets. The problem is, recently, some weight-loss diets that have emerged in the community are not following nutritional principles. People with less nutritional knowledge can implement this diet, which will endanger health. The role of nutritionists is very important in providing education to the public about how to carry out a healthy and nutritious weight-loss diet to normalize their nutritional status. This paper discuss the importance role of nutritionists in educating the public regarding the implementation of a healthy and balanced weight-loss diet in the middle of many mistaken types of current weight-loss diets in Indonesia. The study was descriptive and was conducted in Bandung, March 2021. Appropriate nutritional education is the key success to introduce the community to a healthy and balanced diet. Also, other factors determine such as the active role of other health stakeholders in carrying out activities to change attitudes and practices of public health and nutrition.

Many Canadian school jurisdictions have developed nutrition policies to promote health and improve the nutritional status of children, but research is needed to clarify adherence, guide practice-related decisions, and move policy action forward. The purpose of this research was to evaluate policy adherence with a review of online lunch menus of elementary schools in Nova Scotia (NS) while also providing transferable evidence for other jurisdictions. School menus in NS were scanned and a list of commonly offered items were categorized, according to minimum, moderate, or maximum nutrition categories in the NS policy. The results of the menu review showed variability in policy adherence that depended on food preparation practices by schools. Although further research is needed to clarify preparation practices, the previously reported challenges of healthy food preparations (e.g., cost, social norms) suggest that many schools in NS are likely not able to use these healthy preparations, signifying potential noncompliance to the policy. Leadership and partnerships are needed among researchers, policy makers, and nutrition practitioners to address the complexity of issues related to food marketing and social norms that influence school food environments to inspire a culture where healthy and nutritious food is available and accessible to children.

Nutritionally, the first 1,000 days of an infant's life – from conception to two years – has been identified as a highly influential period, during which lasting health can be achieved. Significant evidence links patterns of infant feeding to both short and long-term health outcomes, many of which can be prevented through nutritional modifications. Recommended globally, breastfeeding is recognised as the gold standard of infant nutrition; providing key nutrients to achieve optimal health, growth and development, and conferring immunologic protective effects against disease. Nevertheless, infant formulas are often the sole source of nutrition for many infants during the first stage of life. Producers of infant formula strive to supply high quality, healthy, safe alternatives to breast milk with a comparable balance of nutrients to human milk imitating its composition and functional performance measures. The concept of ‘nutritional programming’, and the theory that exposure to specific conditions, can predispose an individual's health status in later life has become an accepted dictum, and has sparked important nutritional research prospects. This review explores the impact of early life nutrition, specifically, how different feeding methods affect health outcomes.

ObjectivesTo investigate the nutritional quality of foods marketed to children in the UK and to explore the use of health and nutrition claims.DesignThis cross-sectional study was carried out in a wide range of UK food retailers. Products marketed to children above the age of 1 year containing any of a range of child friendly themes (i.e. cartoons, toys and promotions), and terms suggesting a nutritious or healthy attribute such as ‘one of 5-a-day’, on product packaging were identified both in stores and online. Information on sugar, salt and fat content, as well as health and nutrition claims, was recorded. The Ofcom nutrient profiling model (NPM) was used to assess if products were healthy.ResultsThree hundred and thirty-two products, including breakfast cereals, fruit snacks, fruit-based drinks, dairy products and ready meals, were sampled. The use of cartoon characters (91.6%), nutrition claims (41.6%) and health claims (19.6%) was a common marketing technique. The one of 5-a-day claim was also common (41.6%), but 75.4% (103) of products which made this claim were made up of less than 80 g of fruit and vegetables. Sugar content (mean±SD per 100 g) was high in fruit snacks (48.4±16.2 g), cereal bars (28.9±7.5 g) and cereals (22.9±8.0 g). Overall, 41.0% of the products were classified as less healthy according to the Ofcom NPM.ConclusionA large proportion of products marketed to children through product packaging are less healthy, and claims used on product packaging are confusing. Uniform guidance would avoid confusion on nutritional quality of many popular foods.

The article provides a brief overview of the issues of nutritional therapy in the rehabilitation of cancer patients. Excess sugar in food and drink, fatty and high-calorie foods, processed meat, trans fatty acids, preservatives and dyes are risk factors for the formation of malignant tumors. Patients should be informed about adherence to a healthy lifestyle and exclusion from the diet of foods containing carcinogens to reduce the recurrence of the disease. Chemotherapy courses and radiation sessions are accompanied by a number of side effects that lead to a decrease in the body's defense systems. For the recovery of cancer patients, protein, vitamins and minerals must be present in the diet. All nutrients are better obtained from the natural foods. To maintain a healthy diet, the World Cancer Research Foundation (WCRF) and the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) recommends you toinclude vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes in your daily diet. The article focuses on mare's milk, its multicomponent composition, which has immunomodulatory, antiviral, antibacterial properties. To increase the effectiveness of rehabilitation measures in patients after antitumor treatment, it is advisable to include mare's milk in medical nutrition, which has therapeutic and health-improving properties, and it is also possible to use it in patients undergoing antitumor cytostatic therapy. Further comprehensive study of the therapeutic and rehabilitation potential of mare's milk would make it possible to use this product more widely as an important component of nutritional support for cancer patients during specific therapy courses, which will have a positive effect on their survival rates and quality of life. In the treatment of malignant tumors, the main emphasis is on the development of strategies, new treatment options, and medical nutrition and a healthy lifestyle are an integral part of their complex rehabilitation.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disability that is frequently associated with food refusal, limited food repertoire and high-frequency single food intake mainly among children with ASD. Provision of nutrition can be very challenging due to the fact of these behavioural problems, either for the parents or special educators. Healthy nutrition is associated with providing and consuming nutritious food with results being in a good state of health. Semi-structured focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted among 20 participants at a National Autism Centre to explore their understanding towards healthy nutrition. They were parents and special educators who were actively involved with children with ASD. A series of discussions were transcribed verbatim, and four researchers examined each transcript. Inductive analysis linking codes into main thematic categories was conducted using the constant comparison approach across the full data set. The outcome suggested that participants had limited knowledge relating to the proper dietary and nutritional needs of the children. The key messages from the discussion provide a foundation on the development of a nutrition education module which involves primary caretakers of children with ASD.

Abstract Objectives To determine the desirability and content of a nutrition and healthy living app for Division 3 college athletes at Ithaca College. Methods We conducted five focus groups with 36 athlete leaders representing 7 sports teams (i.e., volleyball, softball, football, and men's and women's soccer and track) to determine if and what general nutrition and health information college athletes would athletes need in an app to support their performance and health. From focus group responses, a 16 item survey regarding scheduling and type of nutrition and healthy living questions with responses ranging from 1 to 5 (Extremely interested to not interested at all) was sent to and answered by 130 student athletes. A prototype app was designed. Results Athletes expressed interest in an app. The themes athletes identified were barriers to healthy eating and living including lack of free time to plan meals, limited dining hall options, and stress of academics in season. From the survey, 75% of athletes were extremely or very interested in the following: individual nutritional goals, meal plan and preparation ideas, and high protein and carbohydrate snacks recipes. About 50% of athletes were interested in sleep tracking and hydration reminders. Most athletes were only moderately to not interested in the following features: promotionals (i.e., deals at restaurants) and personalized minimum calories. Conclusions There is a need and desire for easily accessible nutrition and healthy living information and management tools. A prototype will be shown. Funding Sources None.

Abstract Objectives The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) offers complementary education programs to improve public health through improving nutritional behavioral habits in preschoolers in Washington D.C. This study examines the influence of the SNAP-Ed program on changing a set of positive nutritional behaviors in preschoolers to encourage healthier eating habits. These nutritional behavioral changes include recognizing, choosing, and consuming nutritious and healthy foods. Methods The SNAP-Ed program implemented nutritional education in 37 preschools, schools, and community centers located in Washington D.C for Fiscal Year 2019. During the program, the nutritional behavior of 1679 children aged 2 to 5 years old was examined before and after educational interventions. Interventions focused on the types and the related benefits of different groups of foods including fruits, vegetables, dairy, and whole grains. Designed questionnaires were filled out by 130 teachers based on their observations of the children's nutritional behavioral habits. Teachers were asked if children had an increase in the amount of food consumption from different groups. Children were also observed for an increase in independently choosing healthier foods. Results The SNAP-Ed program observed a positive change in all questions in comparison to the beginning of the program. According to the questionnaires, there were 75%, 75%, 78%, and 75% increases in the amount of fruits, vegetables, dairy, and whole grains preschoolers consumed, respectively. After the educational interventions, 78% of preschoolers showcased healthy food choices, 76% of them selected fruits and vegetables in the cafeteria and 75% of them brought fruits and vegetables as a healthy snack. Conclusions SNAP-Ed nutrition education positively changed preschoolers’ nutritional knowledge and established healthier eating habits. Further research, done in multiple states, is essential to enhance the knowledge of preschoolers nationwide. More research can also be done to examine how effective nutritional education was between SNAP eligible and non-eligible preschoolers. Improving the nutritional health of the public continues to be a major challenge. Our mission of advancing health through food and nutrition has become increasingly complex, particularly as food environments shape the availability, affordability, and social acceptability of food and nutrition “choices”. Promoting nutritional health requires that dietitians expand our knowledge in understanding the determinants of healthy eating and of social change strategies that advocates for and acts on improving food environments. While no single strategy can solve the challenges of public health nutrition, we can each identify unique strengths and opportunities. If we practice in complementary ways, using those strengths for collective action will make us stronger together toward social change supporting improved nutritional health of the public.

Nutrition is a top priority in determining the health of the elderly. Nutritional disorders in the elderly are often difficult to detect and require careful nutritional assessment One of the factors that influence it is nutritional care which has a positive effect on the energy intake of the elderly, so that the role of the elderly themselves is needed in maintaining their healthy quality. The purpose of this community service activity is to assess nutritional status and train the elderly in muscle nutrition management in the form of a book listing the activities carried out and their explanations. This activity was carried out on August 12, 2021 in the area of the Medan Sunggal sub-district. These activities provide important benefits for the regulation of elderly nutrition and provide motivation that the elderly are able to make changes in healthy living behavior.

Nutritional status is the state of health of an individual or group that is determined by the degree of physical need for energy and other nutrients obtained from food and food whose physical impact is set anthropometrically. A person who has a good nutritional status will grow and develop well and healthy, if a person is healthy he will certainly carry out his daily tasks well, good nutritional status is also an important requirement in achieving optimal health, not only marked by the appearance good but also mental and emotional. High and low nutritional status of a person is determined by the intake of food consumed, good nutritional intake is set according to predetermined standards. A good coach will always pay attention to the athlete's condition from all aspects, one of which is from the nutritional aspect. However, not all trainers understand how to regulate balanced nutrition for athletes. That is why there is a need for balanced nutrition management training for trainers which later is expected to be used for athlete nutrition regulation.

ABSTRACT The amount of time spent in poor health at the end of life is increasing. This narrative review summarizes consistent evidence indicating that healthy dietary patterns and maintenance of a healthy weight in the years leading to old age are associated with broad prevention of all the archetypal diseases and impairments associated with aging including: noncommunicable diseases, sarcopenia, cognitive decline and dementia, osteoporosis, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, hearing loss, obstructive sleep apnea, urinary incontinence, and constipation. In addition, randomized clinical trials show that disease-specific nutrition interventions can attenuate progression—and in some cases effectively treat—many established aging-associated conditions. However, middle-aged and older adults are vulnerable to unhealthy dietary patterns, and typically consume diets with inadequate servings of healthy food groups and essential nutrients, along with an abundance of energy-dense but nutrient-weak foods that contribute to obesity. However, based on menu examples, diets that are nutrient-dense, plant-based, and with a moderately low glycemic load are better equipped to meet the nutritional needs of many older adults than current recommendations in US Dietary Guidelines. These summary findings indicate that healthy nutrition is more important for healthy aging than generally recognized. Improved public health messaging about nutrition and aging, combined with routine screening and medical referrals for age-related conditions that can be treated with a nutrition prescription, should form core components of a national nutrition roadmap to reduce the epidemic of unhealthy aging.

Psychological and physical disabilities or impairments create barriers to aspects of healthy eating, thus nutritional needs. A Formulated Meal Replacement (FMR) can reduce those barriers and often can be seen as a necessity in optimising nutritional needs. Healthy eating is interdependent on psychological, social, and environmental factors. In recent years FMRs have become a popular nutrition method to help individuals reach their healthy eating goals. FMRs do solve several problems which may impact healthy eating, such as different social determinants of health, adherence, and permitting some unhealthy behaviours in relation to nutrition, such as more calories available for alcohol or other discretionary nutrition choices. However, FMRs do have a drawback when considering the product serving for different ages, genders, and activity levels. APOC is a nutrition-based company that has developed an FMR. APOC FMR allows easy adherence to self-administration of an appropriate serving for an individual’s age and gender at its simplest form, weight, and activity level at its more complex form. This paper provides two phases. Firstly, discussing the scientific rationale for APOC FMR’s nutrition, including addressing psychological, social, and environmental factors contributing to healthy eating. Secondly, the importance of the FMR for the case study of an individual with a disability. The APOC FMR significantly assisted the individual in healthy eating. It is important to note that the actual reasons that APOC FMR contributes to healthy eating in individuals who have a disability or impairment can be replicated to abled or only slightly limited individuals.

Background: Women's eating habits affect not only the course of pregnancy but also the later life's metabolic health of their off springs. In 2016 Latvian guidelines on healthy nutrition during preconception period, pregnancy and lactation were published. The aim of this study was to analyze the level of nutritional awareness among pregnant women in Latvia. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in Riga Maternity Hospital. 110 pregnant women receiving antenatal care participated in the survey. Results: 64.5% of respondents received recommendations on proper nutrition from health care professionals during pregnancy, whereas only 20.9% were informed in the preconception period. 68.7% of participants, who received information about the principles of healthy nutrition, considered them to be sufficient. The majority of women got the recommendations from gynecologists-obstetricians- 4.9%. 39.1% of women used non-evidence-based sources when searching for the information about healthy nutrition. 34.5% of all pregnant women had at least one health or social risk factor, which required individualized diet planning, however, 26.3% of them did not receive any recommendations at all. 28.7% of respondents started pregnancy with abnormal Body Mass Index (BMI).Conclusions: Women should be advised to make diet corrections before pregnancy, therefore more consultations in preconception period are needed. Additional educational sources providing information about healthy nutrition should be considered.

This mixed-methods community-based participatory research generated knowledge of school staff perceptions of the facilitators of and barriers to implementation of a Canadian First Nation school’s healthy nutrition policy. Themes derived from seven qualitative staff interviews were integrated with quantitative data derived from 28 staff surveys. The Medicine Wheel was used to describe results, as it provided a non-hierarchical and relational way to categorize all components and stakeholders of nutrition policy implementation. Factors that facilitated policy implementation were associated with the school environment, including the nutritional quality of foods sold or offered at school, administrative support, and foundational health programming prior to policy development. Staff identified the school as a role model for community members and as a key facilitator of policy implementation (for example, in leading health initiatives, providing a place for nutritious food and physical activity opportunities, and acting as a health resource for all community members). Barriers included inconsistency between staff members in policy implementation, uncertainty about staff members’ role in policy implementation, and lack of school communication with parents regarding the policy. One of the informative barriers from a First Nation perspective was the perceived misalignment of traditional foods, such as bannock or wild game, served at First Nation cultural events with federally derived nutrition standards that emphasize a low-fat diet.
