Helsingborg, a coastal city in southern Sweden, initiated a long-term re-development project called H+ in 2009, aiming to convert industrial harbor space in the city’s south into a new, livable urban neighborhood and city center. The project aims to create an open and ’tolerant city’ in Helsingborg over the next twenty years. In 2010-2011, H+ used an open-source planning method as a strategy to incorporate multiple working methods and ideas into the planning process. As a cultural analyst, my role with the H+ project and the City of Helsingborg was to mediate social and cultural perspectives and development strategies between plan-ners and citizens. Focusing the project’s vision towards incorporating existing communities and their values, I applied an ethnographic method to culturally map Helsingborg’s social cityscapes. Cultural mapping integrates social and physical places into one map. It is a useful methodological tool in accessing ’cultural’ knowledge, translating ethnographic data into usable maps for city planners in the process of developing the H+ area. This article addresses how ethnographic meth-ods and cultural mapping engages with and revitalizes city planning, essentially a process of place-making the H+ area. An applied cultural analytical approach provokes planning practices and questions how and if planning can be more open and inclusive through deeper understandings of unique places that emerge from the relationships between people and spaces. The ’invisible,’ yet well-known, segregating line (a street called Trädgårdsgatan) in Helsingborg creates a particular condition that the city must contend with in order to achieve its vision of a ’toler-ant city.’

Within the last decade, the sewer system in Helsingborg, Sweden has been rehabilitated in many ways along with the reconstruction of the WWTP Öresundsverket in order to obtain a high degree of nitrogen and phosphorus removal. In that context a holistic view has been applied in order to optimise the corrective measures as seen from the effects in the receiving waters. A sewer catchment model has been used to evaluate several operation strategies and the effect of introducing RTC. Recently, a MOUSE ONLINE system was installed. In this phase the objective is to establish a stable communication with the SCADA system and to generate short-term flow forecasts.

The present paper describes the Helsingborg Pilot Project, a part of the Technology Validation Project: “Integrated Wastewater” (TVP) under the EU Innovation Programme. The objective of the Helsingborg Pilot Project is to demonstrate implementation of integrated tools for the simulation of the sewer system and the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), both in the analyses and the operational phases. The paper deals with the programme for investigating the impact of real time control (RTC) on the performance of the sewer system and wastewater treatment plant. As the project still is in a very early phase, this paper focuses on the modelling of the transport of pollutants and the evaluation of the effect on the sediment deposition pattern from the implementation of real time control in the sewer system.

Finds of seal stamps in graves from the Middle Ages are very rare, especially if they are undamaged. The owner of the well-preserved stamp in grave 207 in the Church of St. Clement in Helsingborg was a nobleman, called Peter Karlsson. His coat of arms, which is quartered, restricted the searching for his relationships geographically. A ’terminus ante quem' was set by the archaeological investigation. The individual age was determined by means of an osteological and odontological investigation. It has not, on the whole, been possible to connect the actual name with any known armorial seal with the quartered shield. The unclear family relationships of this time and the only accidentally preserved documents from the Middle Ages do not offer the research worker of genealogy and heraldry sufficiently reliable sources. Even if there is no clear evidence, however, many facts nevertheless support the presumption that the seal owner in grave 207 was identical with Mayor Peter Karlsson of Helsingborg and also that he was a member of the Thott family.

A kinetic model called SIPHOR has been developed for the biological phosphate removal process. The model is based on IAWQ Activated Sludge Model No. 1, and is divided into three sub-models, one anaerobic, one anoxic and one aerobic model. This paper describes the anaerobic model and results from a calibration and verification of the model on batch experiments performed with sludges from a full-scale plant in Helsingborg and a pilot-scale plant in Malmö. Both plants were run as UCT-processes. Anaerobic batch simulations have been used to identify the following constants, P-release rate (kp), fermentation rate (kferm), anaerobic hydrolysis rate (khx), P-release/VFA-storage (fpp) and the half-saturation coefficients, Kva and Kpop. The stoichiometric constant fpp has been found to be directly related to influent waste water. If acetate is added as carbon source, fpp has a value of 0.43, for primary hydrolysed waste water the value is 0.35 and for normal primary waste water, 0.30 in Helsingborg and 0.35 in Malmö. The rate of anaerobic hydrolysis has been found to be near zero in the anaerobic reactor.

This paper is based on the author's earlier archaeological excavations at St Clemens Church in Helsingborg as well as an investigation in 1987 immediately to the north of the church. On this occasion part of a ditch from a supposed medieval ring fort, estimated to be about a 7o m in diameter, was unexpectedly found. This discovery once again raised the question as to whether an early ring fort had existed here, as suggested by the place name. The probability of such is strengthened by the newly discovered ring forts in south-western Scania: Borgeby and Trelleborg. In terms of time these have been ranked with four circular fortresses in Denmark found much earlier, the dendrochronological dating of which is 980/981. The discoveries of the Scanian ring forts have thrown new light on south Scandinavian history during the period AD 950—1050. This paper can thus be regarded as a contribution to the debate.

In Sweden, Jurassic echinoderms are extremely rare. This present study documents an Early Jurassic echinoderm assemblage collected from a temporary exposure near Helsingborg in Skåne, southern Sweden, which includes a previously undescribed species of isocrinid crinoid, Isocrinus ranae sp.nov., and an acrosaleniid echinoid. The Swedish specimens demonstrate that even limited echinoderm material from small exposures can be assigned to a high systematic level and provide data of considerable significance to the evolution of the group as a whole.

The aim of this article is to give a tentative illustration of how a creative, postpolitical citizen is imagined and encouraged to unfold within the frame of a city renewal project. As a starting point, the article outlines an exploratory framework structured through the analytical concept of postpolis. Postpolis is a term that offers an illustration of the distinguishing qualities of contemporary urbanity in a principal and schematic way. Postpolis here has three cornerstones: the idea of post-politics (the thesis that today politics is out-defined and replaced by governmental practices that leave little space for public influence and participation), the notion of biopolitics and the claim that planning is a governmental practice that is substantially influenced by business management approaches. The illustrative section of the article gives an overview of the empirical illustration H+ and SHIP. H+ is an urban regeneration project in the city of Helsingborg, in southern Sweden. As the largest urban regeneration project in Sweden to date, it will run for 30 years and affect about a third of the total area of the city. The showroom SHIP, which has been constructed in connection with this urban project, presents both what can be done and what is encouraged in tandem with an investigation of the functions, tasks and design of this showroom. The article thus initiates an ethnographic study of the showroom as a planning servicescape, in which the future citizen of Helsingborg is superimposed on the bodies of the visitors.

In the Kattegat area, Denmark, the Sorgenfrei–Tornquist Zone, an old crustal weakness zone, was repeatedly reactivated during Triassic, Jurassic and Early Cretaceous times with dextral transtensional movements along the major boundary faults. These tectonic events were minor compared to the tectonic events of the Late Carboniferous – Early Permian and the Late Cretaceous – Early Tertiary, although a dynamic structural and stratigraphic analysis indicates that the Sorgenfrei–Tornquist Zone was active compared to the surrounding areas. At the end of the Palaeozoic, the area was a peneplain. Regional Triassic subsidence caused onlap towards the north-east, where the youngest Triassic sediments overlie Precambrian crystalline basement. During the Early Triassic, several of the major Early Permian faults were reactivated, probably with dextral strike-slip along the Børglum Fault. Jurassic – Early Cretaceous subsidence was restricted primarily to the area between the two main faults in the Sorgenfrei–Tornquist Zone, the Grenå–Helsingborg Fault and the Børglum Fault. This restriction of basin development indicates a change in the regional stress field at the Triassic–Jurassic transition. Middle Jurassic and Late Jurassic – Early Cretaceous subsidence followed the Early Jurassic pattern with local subsidence in the Sorgenfrei–Tornquist Zone, but now even more restricted to within the zone. The subsidence showed a decrease in the Middle Jurassic, and increased again during Late Jurassic – Early Cretaceous times. Small faults were generated internally in the Sorgenfrei–Tornquist Zone during the Mesozoic with a pattern that indicates a broad transfer of strike-slip/oblique-slip motion from the Grenå–Helsingborg Fault to the Børglum Fault.

Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) has since 1992 been run as a full-scale UCT-process in a part of the waste water treatment plant in Helsingborg. Between June 1993 and July 1994 an extended operational and microbiological investigation was conducted. It was shown that the major phosphorus removal mechanism was biological and that at the most 10% of the soluble phosphorus entering the biological reactor, was removed due to chemical reactions. The VFA-potential in pre-treated waste water has been found to be a key factor. At the waste water treatment plant in Helsingborg 1 mg phosphorus is removed for each 14 mg VFA-potential added. COD, soluble COD and BOD1 are correlated to the VFA-potential, which means that these measurements can be used as operational parameters. If enough VFA-potential is present, the concentration of soluble phosphorus will be lower than 0.3 mg/l in the effluent even at temperatures below 10°C. The mean concentration of soluble phosphorus in the effluent has been 0.29 mg/l during the period October 1993-July 1994. Effluent nitrogen concentration was during the evaluation period between 8–10 mg/l and it was found that PHA was one of the major carbon sources for denitrification. Compared with a pre-denitrification process in combination with simultaneous precipitation, both the filament index and the DSVI were lower in the EBPR process. Other operational factors that affect the process are oxygen and nitrate concentrations in flows to the anaerobic reactor and the degree of internal recirculation from the aerobic to the anoxic reactor.

AbstractTranscatheter closure of a multi-hole perimembranous ventricular septal defect with an aneurysm is challenging. Specific ventricular septal defect closure devices have been developed, but some occluders are reportedly used in an off-label manner. This report describes a child who had a multi-hole perimembranous ventricular septal defect with an aneurysm and underwent successful transcatheter closure using two different occluders: the Occlutech Duct Occluder (Occlutech, Helsingborg, Sweden) and the Amplatzer Duct Occluder II (St. Jude Medical, Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States of America). Transcatheter closure of a multi-hole perimembranous ventricular septal defect with an aneurysm using these two different devices can be performed safely by an experienced interventionist in selected patients.

But even this is not correct: there are three western peninsulas: Finland, Scandinavia and the main European. Usually the three are lumped together; but even at its narrowest point the sea which divides these is much wider than that which separates the Balkans from Anatolia - which is always reckoned to be Asia, and indeed one portion of which constituted the whole of Asia when that word was first used. I know this because I once swam across the Bosphorus, but would certainly never have tried the sound between Elsinore and Helsingborg.

After extension of Öresundsverket in Helsingborg severe nitrification problems have occurred. Complete inhibition of nitrification has been recognized once and a general reduction of nitrification capacity has been found compared to design, to other Swedish treatment plants and to internationally accepted design criteria. A comprehensive examination of inhibition of nitrification has identified industrial sources as the dominating contributors. Some industries have been identified as important sources but fighting inhibition of nitrification requires more than tracking down a few dominating industries, since examination shows that discharges of inhibitory substances are widespread among the industries in the catchment area. Naturally, fighting inhibition of nitrification requires the elimination of contributions from industries with identified discharge. Indoor lighting is facing a massive retrofit to LED lighting. Research is needed to assess whether LED-based lighting can promote energy efficiency, boost visual comfort and support biological functions. This field study considered the lighting of four identical classrooms in an upper secondary school in Helsingborg, Sweden. Two classrooms were fitted with state-of-the-art ceiling pendants containing T5 fluorescent tubes and that had a direct/indirect light distribution (the control rooms). The other two classrooms were fitted with an experimental LED indirect lighting system (the experimental rooms). In the classrooms, 72 students aged 17–18 years performed their usual educational activities over a whole academic year. The light environment, electricity consumption, and students’ mood, light perception and saliva cortisol concentration were monitored. The two lighting systems produced only marginal differences. Overall, the experimental rooms were slightly preferred but achieved only small energy savings due to high parasitic losses.

Size selection investigations were performed in the Sound with experimental, multipanel gill nets equipped with a broad range of mesh sizes targeting Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus). Each of the 20 experimental fishery surveys covered the central Sound from Helsingør-Helsingborg (north) to Drogden-Klagshamn (south) during the autumn, winter, and spring periods from 1993 to 1998. There was high variability in catch sizes both between and within surveys. The overall best fits, in terms of minimum total deviance across all sets, were achieved using a unimodal normal scale model. Almost all surveys showed high between-set variation, which was accounted for when estimating the mean selectivity curves using a random effects model. The selectivity curves fitted to individual sets were compared with those fitted to the combined data sets. It was demonstrated that analysing pooled data sets resulted in overdispersion and bias in the selection parameters. Irregular time series of the estimates of the selectivity parameters in the investigation period indicated negative autocorrelation with a seasonal pattern.

This article describes and problematizes the skills that are used when researching analogue archives. The article deals with the process that operates when a researcher finds small details in archival records that makes it possible to generate a story. Whether it is skill or luck that enables one to find the phenomena that create meaning is also discussed. The empirical example is fetched from the “Swedish Town project” that was initiated with the aim to write a new kind of urban history in the 1940s by Swedish art historian Gregor Paulsson. The researcher Börje Hanssen conducted field work in the city of Helsingborg in southern Sweden during the summers in 1942, 1943 and 1944. The “Swedish Town”-project explored urban history through both traditional sources such as archives, but also by interviews with contemporary town inhabitants and photographs. In the article we meet both Hanssen and some of his interviewees, and his working methods, his texts and some photographs are being analyzed. Börje Hanssen later became an influential ethnologist and in this article we encounter him in the beginning of his career. In order to examine the role played by one small detail in a large amount of material, and how such a detail can influence the researcher’s inter- pretations, Roland Barthes concepts of punctum and studium are used in the article, in order to create meaning out of small, everyday and often seemingly insignificant phenomena. Punctum and studium are fruitful analytical tools, not only in analyzing photographs, which was Barthes original use of the concept but also in other contexts, in this case archival records. The article thus discusses when a detail becomes the punctum that changes the researcher’s mindset and enables new knowledge to be produced.

Abstract Background Atrial flow regulator (AFR) (Occlutech, Helsingborg, Sweden) are self-expanding, circular devices. A flexible waist in the centre connects the two discs and has a centrally located shunt. Case summary We report a case of an 80-year-old woman undergoing a repeat left atrial ablation for persistent atrial fibrillation with an implanted AFR. The AFR was implanted 1 year prior to the procedure for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction as part of the AFR-PRELIEVE trial. A single, fluoroscopy-guided, transseptal puncture was performed infero-posterior to the device, allowing the positioning of the mapping (LASSO® 20 mm, Biosense Webster, Irvine, CA, USA) and ablation (Thermocool Smarttouch SF, CARTO®, Biosense Webster, Irvine, CA, USA) catheter in the left atrium. Three-dimensional mapping (CARTO®, Biosense Webster, Irvine, CA, USA) and left atrial ablation were successfully performed. After the procedure, fluoroscopy and transthoracic echocardiography showed an unchanged device position. Discussion To our knowledge, this is the first case report of a transseptal puncture in a patient with an implanted AFR. Transseptal puncture in patients with an implanted AFR seems to be safe and feasible. With device diameters of 21–23 mm and based on previous studies on similar devices, transseptal puncture should be possible in most patients, as opposed to puncture through the device.

Objectives The objective of the study was to evaluate whether oral cobalamin supplementation can restore normocobal-aminaemia in cats with hypocobalaminaemia and clinical signs of gastrointestinal disease. Methods This was a retrospective study based on a computerised database search for client-owned cats treated at Evidensia Specialist Animal Hospital, Helsingborg, Sweden, during the period December 2013 to August 2016. Inclusion criteria were cats with clinical signs of chronic enteropathy, an initial serum cobalamin concentration ⩽250 pmol/l (reference interval 214–738 pmol/l) and oral treatment with cobalamin tablets. Results Twenty-five cats met the inclusion criteria. The cats were treated with 0.25 mg cyanocobalamin tablets once daily. Serum cobalamin concentration was rechecked 27–94 days after continuous oral cobalamin supplementation. All cats had serum cobalamin concentrations above the reference interval after oral cobalamin supplementation. Median (range) serum cobalamin concentration was 128 pmol/l (111–250 pmol/l) prior to treatment and 2701 pmol/l (738–16,359 pmol/l) after supplementation. This difference was statistically significant ( P <0.0001). Conclusions and relevance Our results suggest that oral cobalamin supplementation is effective in increasing serum cobalamin to supranormal concentrations in cats with hypocobalaminaemia. Thus, oral cobalamin supplementation is a promising alternative to parenteral administration. Prospective comparative studies in cats being treated with parenteral vs oral cobalamin supplementation in a larger number of patients are warranted before oral supplementation can be recommended for routine use.

AbstractAdult health is influenced by factors during fetal life affecting organ development and birth weight. We aimed to study such factors in relation to adult respiratory disease (ARD) risk. The Helsingborg Birth Cohort, Sweden, contributed baseline data collected by medical staff through clinical examination and questionnaires on maternal and birth characteristics 1964–1967. Register linkages were performed with completions of data on ARD by ICD 8–10 classifications (1969–2016), and/or ARD-related drug usage (2005–2016) enabling a 50-year follow-up time. Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were made to adjust for potential confounders, adjusted hazard ratio (aHR). A total of 3675 mothers and their offspring were included. Female offspring showed higher frequency of ARD than males, aHR 1.5 (95% CI 1.3–1.8). Maternal use of sedatives during second trimester, aHR 2.2 (95% CI 1.4–3.4), and maternal smoking during most of pregnancy, aHR 1.2 (95% CI 1.0–1.4), were associated with offspring ARD. Stratified by sex, large-for-gestational-age, aHR 1.4 (95% CI 1.0–1.9), was significantly associated with ARD in female offspring along with maternal sedative use during second trimester and maternal smoking during most of pregnancy. Maternal sedative use during second trimester or all trimesters were the only significant risk factors for male offspring. In conclusion, maternal sedative use in second trimester was independently associated with subsequent respiratory disease in adult offspring irrespective of sex.

Energy conservation in the passenger transport sector of cities is an important policy matter. There is a long history of transport energy conservation, dating back to the first global oil crisis in 1973–1974, the importance and significance of which is explained briefly in this paper. Detailed empirical data on private and public passenger transport energy use are provided for Sweden’s ten largest cities in 2015 (Stockholm, Göteborg, Malmö, Linköping, Helsingborg, Uppsala, Jönköping, Örebro, Västerås and Umeå), as well as Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, which is a benchmark small city, well-known globally for its sustainability credentials, including mobility. These data on per capita energy use in private and public transport, as well as consumption rates per vehicle kilometer and passenger kilometer for every mode in each Swedish city and Freiburg, are compared with each other and with comprehensive earlier data on a large sample of US, Australian, Canadian, European and Asian cities. Swedish cities are found to have similar levels of per capita car use and energy use in private transport as those found in other European cities, but in the context of significantly lower densities. Possible reasons for the observed Swedish patterns are explored through detailed data on their land use, public and private transport infrastructure, and service and mobility characteristics. Relative to their comparatively low densities, Swedish cities are found to have healthy levels of public transport provision, relatively good public transport usage and very healthy levels of walking and cycling, all of which help to contribute to their moderate car use and energy use.

This paper presents a new approach to transport project assessment in terms of feasibility risk assessment and reference class forecasting. Conventionally, transport project assessment is based upon a Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) where evaluation criteria such as Benefit Cost Ratios (BCR) are obtained. Recent research has however proved that substantial inaccuracies are present when obtaining the monetary input to the CBA, particularly as concerns the construction costs and demand forecasts. This paper proposes a new approach in order to address these inaccuracies in a so-called Reference Scenario Forecasting (RSF) frame. The RSF is anchored in the cost-benefit analysis; thus, it provides decision-makers with a quantitative mean of assessing the transport infrastructure project. First, the RSF method introduces uncertainties within the CBA by applying Optimism Bias uplifts on the preliminary construction cost estimates. Hereafter, a quantitative risk analysis is provided making use of Monte Carlo simulation. This approach facilitates random input parameters based upon reference class forecasting, hence, a parameter data fit has been performed in order to obtain validated probability distribution functions. The latter have been placed and ultimately simulated on the inaccuracies of determining demand forecasts, i.e. leading to travel time savings and ticket revenues of the project. Finally, RSF makes use of scenario forecasting where trend scenarios such as economic growth and level of cross-border integration are investigated. The latter is highly relevant as RSF is demonstrated by a case example concerning the fixed link between Elsinore in Denmark and Helsingborg in Sweden.

AbstractAggression and violence have been a customary part of life that mankind has had to live with from the beginning of time; it has been accepted by society even though it expresses endless negativity. Aggression and violence can find a place in sports events and football games because of the social problems of the audience watching the competitions or games, which sometimes fall into the category of hooliganism. Turkey is one of the countries that should consider this problem to be a serious social problem. Even during 2014 and 2015, a relatively short period of time, there were significant hazardous acts committed by hooligans. In February 2014, one supporter was killed after a game between Liverpool and Arsenal in England; in March 2014, a game between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahce was left half-finished because of violent acts in the stadium that caused players in the pitch to believe that they could not leave stadium alive, although they finally left after a few hours; in another incident in March 2014, one supporter was killed after a game between Helsingborg and Djugarden in Sweden; in November 2014, one supporter was killed and 14 supporters were injured before the game between Atletico Madrid and Deportivo in Spain. These are all examples of aggression, violence, and hooliganism in football. This paper aims to discuss aggression, violence, and hooliganism in football, especially in recent years, and investigate what can be done to prevent these acts from occurring again in the future by examining them in hindsight.

Two previous pan-European consensus meetings, the 1995 and 2006 Helsingborg meetings, were convened to review the scientific evidence and the state of current services to identify priorities for research and development and to set targets for the development of stroke care for the decade to follow. Adhering to the same format, the European Stroke Organisation (ESO) prepared a European Stroke Action Plan (ESAP) for the years 2018 to 2030, in cooperation with the Stroke Alliance for Europe (SAFE). The ESAP included seven domains: primary prevention, organisation of stroke services, management of acute stroke, secondary prevention, rehabilitation, evaluation of stroke outcome and quality assessment and life after stroke. Research priorities for translational stroke research were also identified. Documents were prepared by a working group and were open to public comments. The final document was prepared after a workshop in Munich on 21–23 March 2018. Four overarching targets for 2030 were identified: (1) to reduce the absolute number of strokes in Europe by 10%, (2) to treat 90% or more of all patients with stroke in Europe in a dedicated stroke unit as the first level of care, (3) to have national plans for stroke encompassing the entire chain of care, (4) to fully implement national strategies for multisector public health interventions. Overall, 30 targets and 72 research priorities were identified for the seven domains. The ESAP provides a basic road map and sets targets for the implementation of evidence-based preventive actions and stroke services to 2030.

There has been an increased interest in Housing First services in Sweden over the past few years. The model was first developed in New York by the organization Pathways to Housing. The growing interest in Housing First as a response to ending long-term homelessness is seen not only in the US and Canada, but also in Europe. One reason for this is the mass of evidence showing high housing retention rates with Housing First services as compared with traditional services. This article aims to analyse the drivers and barriers that hinder or facilitate the scaling up of Housing First pilots. The research question is: Is it possible to incorporate lessons learned from the Housing First pilot into the existing system of homelessness services? In other words: Is it possible to put new wine into old bottles? This is an ongoing research project on Housing First services in Sweden, with the specific focus on the Housing First pilot in the city of Helsingborg. The empirical material consists of in-depth interviews and focus group interviews with project managers, support workers and other stakeholders. The main results show that leadership is essential and a key driver for the scaling-up process. Another driver is the importance of repeating the vision and goals of the idea to keep the story alive. A third key driver is that the staff has identified the Housing First approach as a relative advantage and believes in the idea. The main barrier to the scaling-up process lies in the structures that maintain and surround the social housing programme.
