Abstract In this paper, I investigate the relationship between Penelope's letter to Odysseus (Her. 1) and the letters of Leander and Hero (Her. 18–19), especially Hero's letter to Leander (Her. 19). The peculiarity of this comparative approach lies mainly in the fact that whereas Penelope and Odysseus were one of the most famous couples in ancient literature and the protagonists of a great epic, the Odyssey, Leander and Hero were considerably less known in Rome during Ovid's time. To prove the close relationship between the letters of Penelope, Leander, and Hero, I present their numerous similarities, and then I suggest the reasons why Ovid took pains to compose the letters of Leander and Hero in a way so closely reminiscent of Penelope's letter to Odysseus.

This research aims to discover the relation between the historical background in the Elizabethan Era and the poem by Christopher Marlowe entitled Hero and Leander which is written during this Era (published in 1598) and the characters’ gender orientation which are also influenced by the Era. This research uses descriptive-qualitative method since the data is collected by reading then it is identified and analyzed by the writers about the characters’ gender orientation of Marlowe’s Hero and Leander poem. In analyzing the data, for the maindata, the writers usetheprimary data source. As it is a poem that isobserved, the writer uses Hero and Leander poem by Christopher Marlowe, from Renaissance Edition text transcribed by Bear, January 2001, from the 1598 edition (STC number 17413). In order to present the data that has been collected and analyzed, the writer uses thedescriptive technique. It finds that the romantic theme is greatly influenced by the Elizabethan Era and the Roman mythological elements described in the poem. Ambiguous gender orientation also could be discovered in this narrative poem.

This thesis is a practice-as-research project ‘articulating and evidencing’ (Nelson, 2013, p. 11) research and practical explorations of Christopher Marlowe’s \(Hero\) \(and\) \(Leander\) and William Shakespeare’s \(Venus\) \(and\) \(Adonis\), using a method defined in the thesis as ‘dramatic ekphrasis’. A theatrical adaptation of the works — staged using the language of both poems as an amalgamated visual and acoustic theatre piece — exposes (through practice) the authors’ transgressive sexual and amorous themes. The narrative poems of Shakespeare and Marlowe are interpreted as having cultural purpose, and the exegesis explores how the poems expose and challenge biased Elizabethan gender paradigms, homosocial hegemony and moral stability in Elizabethan England. Through ekphrasis and contemporary performance methodology, the adaptation transposes the narrative verse to dramatic action in order to challenge our twenty-first century audience by destabilising gender and sexuality. By transposing the narratives into performance practice, the thesis strives to link the poems’ challenge to homosocial bias in the late sixteenth-century to our modern culture — to challenge present-day audience perspectives of gender-normative and heterocentric biases. Also, the thesis describes ways in which the practice illuminates and reinforces unique differences in the authors’ dramatic style. The thesis concludes by reflecting on and assessing the efficacy of both research and practice findings.

Starting from definitions of desire borrowed from ancient philosophers (Plato, Aristotle), classical poets (Ovid), Christian theologians (Augustine, Thomas Aquinas), and physicians (from Galen to Robert Burton), this dissertation studies the representations of desire in Elizabethan narrative poetry from the 1590s, and more particularly in Shakespeare’s Venus and Adonis, Marlowe and Chapman’s Hero and Leander, and Spenser’s Faerie Queene (II and III). The guiding hypothesis is that desire determines the terms and images in which it is represented; it is therefore both a poetical object and a principle of literary creation. Using a rhetorical approach, I focus on stylistic devices linked with motion: metaphor and metonymy, but also figures of construction which play on word order, and figures such as allegory, which progressively unravel thought. Although desire does act as a commonplace in Early Modern texts, sharing the same language and the same locus does not necessarily entail physical communion for the bodies involved. The body of the beloved, enclosed upon itself and depicted as an untouchable work of art, is pitted against the lover’s organism, alive and exposed to contamination. The poem itself becomes permeable in relation to its social and political environment, in its use of sources, and in its compositional procedures. Desire articulates description and narration, leading the narrative forward but also backward, which suggests that mimesis can be a reversible process

The present research focuses on the reception of the fabulæ of Hero and Leander and of Pyramus and Thisbe in Seventeenth-century Italian literature, in particular in four texts differing by genre, style and geographical origin: the idyll of Giovanni Capponi, Gli amori infelici di Ero e Leandro (1618); the ‘favola maritima’ Hero e Leandro (1630) and the ‘lieta favola’ La Tisbe by Francesco Bracciolini; and the ‘dramma per musica’ Il Leandro by Badovero-Pistocchi (1679). The decision to place the two myths in close relationship with each other was inspired by some remarks found in authoritative historical-philological studies on the origin of the ancient Greek novel and the Greek novella (Rodhe 1876, Lavagnini 1921, Cataudella 1957) where the two fabulæ are cited as examples of proto-novels for the insistent recurrence in them of topoi proper to the Hellenic novel. Starting from an accurate thematic-rhetorical analysis of the 'common heritage', or rather, of the 'Hellenic-romance nucleus' belonging to the classic versions of reference (Mus.; Ov., Her. 18-19; Ov. Met., IV, 55-166), the course of the research in modern rewritings in question follows three main coordinates: verification of the idea of correspondence between the two myths, already found in the ancient, medieval and Renaissance versions, and identification of the ways in which it is expressed in seventeenth-century texts; analysis of the processes of rewriting the myth within the new Baroque metamorphoses and the new stage hybrids, both in reference to the interaction between the 'Hellenic-romance nucleus', tragic inheritance and influences of the idyllic and pastoral genre, as well as in regard to the relationship between Hellenic and Baroque romance; focus on the hermeneutic aspect within which to read the new meaning assumed by the myth: clementia or sententia for the two couples of lovers?

abstract: This thesis examines Christopher Marlowe's poem Hero and Leander and George Chapman's Continuation thereof through a theoretical lens that includes theories of intimacy, sexuality and touch taken from Lee Edelman, Daniel Gil, James Bromley, Katherine Rowe and others. Hands are seen as the privileged organ of touch as well as synecdoche for human agency. Because it is all too often an unexamined sense, the theory of touch is dealt with in detail. The analysis of hands and touch leads to a discussion of how Marlowe's writing creates a picture of sexual intimacy that goes against traditional institutions and resists the traditional role of the couple in society. Marlowe's poem favors an equal, companionate intimacy that does not engage in traditional structures, while Chapman's Continuation to Marlowe's work serves to reaffirm the transgressive nature of Marlowe's poem by reasserting traditional social institutions surrounding the couple. Viewing the two pieces of literature together further supports the conclusion that Marlowe's work is transgressive because of how conservative Chapman's reaction to Hero and Leander is.

Abstract: Ovid is one of the most fascinating poets of the Latin literature. Few authors in the Classical world achieved his masterly control of the verse and have delighted so many generations of readers with his talent for describing scenes, the feelings and the anxieties of his characters through vivid dialogues and colourful tableaux. And from this point of view, Ovid was one of the most innovative Roman poets and, simultaneously, one of the most influent authors throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance until today. My analysis will focus on poems 18 and 19 of the Heroides, an extraordinary collection of elegiac letters. The two poems tell the story of a tragic love, that of Hero and Leander, a young couple living in opposite towns separated by the Hellespontus, whose love was forbidden by their parents. From the letters – and none of them will read the letter of the other –, we understand that Leander, having decided to leave Sestus and to cross the channel by swimming during a storm, will never reach Hero’s Abydos. From other versions of the story, the source of which is most likely Hellenistic, we know that Hero committed suicide when she saw Leander’s body lying down on the beach. This love story is told by Ovid in the most fascinating terms. My work is divided into three parts. In the fist one, I give a summary of the poets’ life and works; the models and sources will be described, particularly those referring to Heroides 18-19, and the compositional structure will be analysed; finally I add some notes on the textual tradition. The second part is the translation. It aims at providing a close idea of Ovid’s words. I used Kenney’s edition of 1996. In the last part I tried to examine how Ovid reconstruct the story, to clarify myths and further information that may be relevant to understanding the poet’s subtle narration, and to analyse how he combines different poetic genres and voices to express the emotions, the conflicts and feelings of the unfortunate lovers.

Large natural gas engines are durable and cost-effective generators of power for distributed energy applications. Fuel efficiency is an important aspect of distributed generation since operating costs associated with fuel consumption are the major component of energy cost on a life-cycle basis; furthermore, higher fuel efficiency results in lower CO2 emissions. Leaner operation of natural gas engines can result in improved fuel efficiency; however, engine operation becomes challenging at leaner air-to-fuel ratios due to several factors. One factor in combustion control is ignition. At lean air-fuel mixtures, reliable and repeatable ignition is necessary to maintain consistent power production from the engine, and spark plug quality and durability play an important role in reliability of ignition. Here research of a novel spark plug design for lean natural gas engines is presented. The spark plug is an annular gap spark plug with a permanent magnet that produces a magnetic field that forces the spark to rotate during spark discharge. The rotating arc spark plug (RASP) has the potential to improve ignition system reliability and durability. In the study presented here, the RASP plug was operated in a small natural gas engine, and combustion stability (measured by the coefficient of variation of indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP)) was measured as a function of air-to-fuel ratio to characterize the ignition performance at lean mixtures. Comparisons were made to a standard J-plug spark plug.

Abstract The NOx emission from gas burners is essentially due to thermal NOx occuring at temperatures above 1500 K. Lean combustion reduces the flame temperature and hence thermal NOx production. However, operation at leaner mixtures creates problems in flame stability. It is well established that the closer the standoff distance of the flame to the burner, the more stable the flame. In the current paper, the liftoff and blow off characteristics of two dimensional planar jets (width/length ≪ 1) have been analyzed. The equations of mass, momentum, energy, and species have been transformed from compressible to incompressible form, then normalized, and converted into ordinary differential equations using an appropriate similarity variable, η. Explicit mixing solutions are obtained for a range of Schmidt numbers. The mixing solutions for single jets are used to determine flame standoff distance by matching the local axial velocity on the stoichiometric contour with the laminar burning velocity. The blow off velocity is then deduced. It has been verified, but not reported here, that the results are qualitatively similar for circular jets. It is envisioned that this model will be extrapolated to include multiple planar/cluster jets and thus allow the effect of flame interaction on liftoff height and blow off velocity to be studied.

Abstract The main motivation of this study is to investigate detailed NOx and CO formation in high-pressure dump combustor fired with lean premixed methane-air mixture using CFD-CRN hybrid approach. Further, this study is extended to investigate the effect of H2 enrichment on emission formation in the same combustor. Three-dimensional steady RANS CFD simulations have been performed using a Flamelet Generated Manifold (FGM) model in Simcenter STAR-CCM+ 2019.2 with the DRM22 reduced mechanism. The CFD simulations have been modelled along with all three heat transfers modes: conduction, convection and radiation. The conjugate heat transfer (CHT) approach and participating media radiation modelling have been used here. Initially, CFD simulations are performed for five lean equivalence ratios (ϕ = 0.43–0.55, Tinlet = 673 K, Vinlet = 40 m/s) of pure methane-air mixture operating at 5 bar. The exit temperature and flame-length are compared with available experimental data. The automatic chemical reactor network has been constructed from CFD data and solved using the recently developed reactor network module of Simcenter STAR-CCM+ 2019.2 in a single framework for each cases. It is found out that the CRNs up to 10,000 PSRs can provide adequate accuracy in exit NOx predictions compared to experiments for pure methane cases. The contribution of NOx formation pathway, changes from N2O intermediate to thermal NO as equivalence ratio increases. Further studies are performed for two equivalence ratios (ϕ = 0.43 and 0.50 to simulate the impact of H2 addition (up to 40% by volume) on NOx formation pathways and CO emission. It is found out here that the contribution from NNH pathway increases for leaner equivalence ratio cases (ϕ = 0.43), while thermal pathway slightly increases for ϕ = 0.50 with increase in H2 content from 0% to 40%.

An extensive experimental analysis on the subject of unsteady flow field in high pressure turbine stages was carried out at the Laboratorio di Fluidodinamica delle Macchine (LFM) of Politecnico di Milano. The research stage represents a typical modern HP gas turbine stage designed by means of 3D techniques, characterised by a leaned stator and a bowed rotor and operating in high subsonic regime. The first part of the program concerns the analysis of the steady flow field in the stator-rotor axial gap by means of a conventional five-hole probe and a temperature sensor. Measurements were carried out on eight planes located at different axial positions allowing the complete definition of steady flow field both in absolute and relative frame of reference. The evolution of the main flow structures, such as secondary flows and vane wakes, downstream of the stator are here presented and discussed in order to evidence the stator aerodynamic performance and, in particular, the different flow field approaching the rotor blade row for the two axial gaps. This results set will support the discussion of the unsteady stator-rotor effects presented in paper Part II. Furthermore, 3D time-averaged measurements downstream of the rotor were carried out at one axial distance and for two stator-rotor axial gaps. The position of the probe with respect to the stator blades is changed by means of rotating the stator in circumferential direction, in order to describe possible effects of the non-uniformity of the stator exit flow field downstream of the stage. Both flow fields, measured for the nominal and for a very large stator-rotor axial gap, are discussed and results show the persistence of some stator flow structures downstream of the rotor, in particular for the minimum axial gap. Eventually the flow fields are compared to evidence the effect of the stator-rotor axial gap on the stage performance from a time-averaged point of view.
