Sweden is considered to be an egalitarian country. Despite this there is a pronouncedgender segregation in the labor market. Traditional notions of what constitutes asmale and female occupations are still factors that influence the labor market. Thetimber industry has historically been a male-dominated industry. It is still difficult forwomen to obtain employment in that industry. When recruiting staff, a company hasthe opportunity to alter the demographic segementation of the workforce. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the recruitment process on a selectedcompany in the timber industry from a gender perspective. The company has dividedits employees under two categories, civil servants and collectiv employees. Since theunder-representation of women is most noticeable among the collectiv employees, thestudy focuses on the differences in how the recruitment process looks between thesediffrerent categories. The study showed that a gender perspective is not taken intoaccount in all parts of the recruitment process. The results also showed differences inthe recruitment process between the different occupational categories. Our conclusionwas therefore that the company's recruitment process may hinder women to obtainemployment.

The Swedish business community and notably Swedish listed companies and financial companies are almost completely male-dominated, with female CEOs accounting for a meager six percent. We still know very little about the recruitment process of an Executive Director in these companies, what influencing mechanisms exist in the different steps of the recruitment process and what role these have in the final selection of a CEO. The purpose of this research paper was to increase awareness and provide insight in to the recruitment process, to explore if homosocial and gender stereotypical influences affect the recruitment process, how they are evident and finally how these perceptions and practices can influence competent women's possibilities to be recruited to a CEO position. We have used a qualitative approach with a case-study method in the form of semi-structured interviews with five listed and financial companies. Our theoretical reference framework consists of research within the fields of organizational theories, leadership, recruitment and gender with emphasis on our three main concepts, recruitment of business executives, homosociality and stereotyping. With help from the empirical data collected from our completed case studies, we have been able to identify how a recruitment process of a CEO is implemented and which steps in the recruitment process that have been used or not used. The results of our study show that there are frequent and recurring signs of homosocial behavior and stereotypical perceptions both directly and indirectly before and during the course of the recruitment process. Our study also shows that homosocial behavior and stereotypical perceptions affect both directly and indirectly women’s recruitment possibilities to a CEO position based on competence where the importance of, above all, an open recruitment process stands out distinctly.

Background: Sweden is a country that, compared to other countries in the world, is far ahead in its gender equality work, where laws around discrimination exist to protect workers and to promote equal rights and opportunities regardless of gender, ethnic affiliation and sexual orientation etc. Despite this, previous studies show that there are barriers for some workers in advancing up the organizational hierarchy and thus not being given the same opportunities. Statistics show that there is a strong uneven balance between women and men in higher managerial positions in Sweden where men are over-represented. This study identified the banking industry as gender equality at middle management level, but which is still over-represented by men in higher management positions is the banking industry. Therefore, this study investigated why and how this uneven balance occurs. Purpose: The overall purpose is to contribute to an understanding of why women are more common in lower managerial positions but not higher in the banking industry and gain an understanding of the obstacles these women encounter or have encountered during their professional careers. The aim is also to gain an understanding of how women at middle management level in the banking industry perceive their opportunities for further advancement. Method: To answer the study's problem, a qualitative method has been used where seven semi-structured interviews have been conducted with female middle managers within the banking industry in a delimited region. Conclusion: This study presents that gender processes and gender coding within organizations exist and can pose invisible barriers to women. The results also suggest that it is the women who give themselves the opportunity to advance upwards in the organizational hierarchy where competence and courage provide the conditions for a career in the sense of reaching higher managerial positions. The study finally presents that despite presence of human values and gender equality work from organizations and society at large, continued efforts are needed in this area as gender processes continue to be an obstacle to women.

Introduction: Previous studies describe career development as the different directions individuals take in their work. How a career development transpires and what influences individual face is different for women and men. Previous studies show that there are internal and external factors affecting the individual's career development. Further, previous studies also show that family situation and homosocial reproduction also affect an individual's career development. Studies show that women are less likely than men to develop in their careers and that they tend to face gender specific obstacles in their career development. Previous studies show that the reasons why women have difficulties may be due to the glass ceiling. Questions about career development and internal and external factors, about career development and family situation, career development and the glass ceiling as well as career development and homosocial reproduction is therefore to be answered. The issues regarded in this study are; how does career development of women and men in the retail sector in Sweden evolves to reach a management position? What affect men and women in their career development in the retail sector in Sweden? Aims: The overall aim of the study is to describe and to create understanding of how women and men in the retail sector develop in their careers and what influences career development. The aim is also to compare whether there are any similarities alternatively differences between women and men in their career development into a management position. Method: A qualitative study with a comparative design in which empirical data is collected through semi-structured interviews with individuals in management positions in the Swedish retail sector. Results: The results of this study show that there is a connection between what affect the individual in their career development and how career development occur. One's own personality, the inner urge and the family situation is what primarily affect their career development. The results also suggest that women are not obstructed in their career development by the glass ceiling in their career development. This study shows that what was considered the most important in recruitment is to create a balance between the sexes, not to recruit a specific gender. The study shows that a career development in the retail sector starts at a low level in the hierarchy and that individuals evolve gradually thereafter. Conclusions: The indications that affect individuals' career development are the internal driving force and personality. It is also evident that the family situation affects men and women in their career development since the partner is taking more responsibility. Women in retail doesn’t notice and are not obstructed by the glass ceiling in their career development and the recruitment isn’t affected by homosocial reproduction, it is important to achieve gender balance. This study finds that career development in the Swedish retail sector starts low in the hierarchy and that woman and men will start in a similar way.

Background: According to the government's gender equality goal, organizations achieve gender equality in boards if men's and women's representation exceeds 40% (Englund, 2019). The concept of equality means that women and men should be given the same conditions regarding rights, obligations and opportunities (Jämställdhetsmyndigheten, 2019). Sweden shows a positive trend in gender equality with regard to its boards, while Swedish nomination committees only show minor changes regarding its gender distribution. The phenomenon that preliminary statistics show contributes to interesting deviations from what previous studies in the research area suggest and what homosocial reproduction suggests. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to explain to what extent the proportion of women in Swedish boards is affected by the composition and structure of the nomination committees. Method: This paper has a deductive research where three different theories was used to develop hypotheses which then was tested. The theories that underline the study’s hypotheses are homosocial reproduction, institutional theory and the resource-dependence theory. The study’s hypotheses have been tested using Ordinary Least Square regression method where the sample included 76 companies listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange and specific information regarding each nominator in their nomination committee for a period of five years. The research strategy used is a longitudinal design. Conclusions: There is a negative relationship between the proportion of men in nomination committees and the proportion of women in Swedish boards. Homosocial reproduction exists in the recruitment of board members in Sweden and its impact on the proportion of women in Swedish boards tends to vary over time. The factors in the composition and structure of the nomination committees that have an impact on the proportion of women on Swedish boards are: the average age of the nomination committee, the duration of the nominators in the nomination committee and the proportion of men in nomination committees. Furthermore, the proportion of women in Swedish boards is also affected by: the size of organizations and the industry the company operates in.
