Анотація:

The species flock of hamlets of the genus <em>Hypoplectrus</em> from the coral reefs of the tropical western Atlantic contains more than a dozen morphs distinguished by color pattern alone. Thus far, they have been characterized by a high level of genetic uniformity, raising many questions about whether they represent true species, incipient species, or color variants. However, DNA barcoding of the COI mtDNA gene from two otherwise unremarkable marking variations of the Barred Hamlet from the Gulf of Mexico and Florida reveals two separate relatively deep lineages more than 3% sequence-diverge

The hamlets of the genus Hypoplectrus comprise a species flock of about 20 species found on coral reefs of the tropical western Atlantic Ocean, distinguished by complex color patterns and sharing mitochondrial DNA haplotypes within the Caribbean Sea (Gulf of Mexico and Florida-centered species are about 3% divergent in the COI marker). The hamlets (Hypoplectrus spp., Perciformes: Serranidae) constitute a distinctive model system for the study of a variety of ecological and evolutionary processes including the evolution and maintenance of simultaneous hermaphroditism and egg trading, sex allocation, sexual selection, social-trap, mimicry, dispersal, speciation, and adaptive radiation. Addressing such fundamental and complex processes requires a good knowledge of the taxonomy and natural history of the hamlets. Анотація:

Species in the genus Hypoplectrus are found primarily in coral reefs in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, particularly around Florida and the Bahamas. They are a popular choice for hobbyist saltwater aquariums. Members of this genus are simultaneous hermaphrodites, as they have both male and female sexual organs at the same time as an adult. We present the genome sequences of 7 species of Hypoplectrus. Raw read data and assembled genomes are available in Genbank.
