Both aging and inactivity contribute to the numerous skeletal muscle changes that occur with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. These changes include reduced capillarization that can impaired glucose uptake and substrate delivery, resulting in metabolic abnormalities and metabolic inflexibility.
