This study explores the possibility of adjusting income tax parameters to achieve a specific level of income inequality in Russia. The hypothesis is that by altering the personal income tax design, it is possible to reduce income inequality to a specified level, as measured by the Gini coefficient. Key parameters include the maximum progressive tax rate, the lower income threshold for increased rates, and the tax-free allowance (either differentiated or universal). To test this hypothesis, I modeled income inequality reduction using the Gini coefficient. The procedure involved optimizing incom

Determining the level of income inequality requires the adoption of a specific measurement methodology. The aim of the study was to review and discuss the methodologies used to measure income inequality. Four measures are presented, each based on different assumptions. These measures were the Gini coefficient, Theil coefficient, Kukuła coefficient and unevenness coefficient. The first three measures, and in particular the Gini coefficient, are commonly described in the literature, while the unevenness coefficient is the author’s proposal for measuring income inequality. In order to explore the current income gap, a method based on the PSO algorithm in the edge computing environment is proposed. PSO calculates and simulates bird flock foraging activities, the Frank Heppner biological group model, and the three rules in bird activities. After studying the activities of these natural creatures, abstract problems are quantified and similar models established. The Gini coefficient is calculated by using grouped data, and the grouping basis is also innovative. AbstractGrowing interest in the analysis of interrelationships between income distribution and economic growth has recently stimulated new theoretical and empirical research. Measures such as the head-count ratio for the poverty index or the widely used Gini coefficient are aggregated indicators describing the general extent of inequality without deeper insights into income distribution among households. To derive an indicator accounting for income distribution among income groups, we propose a new approach based on an output oriented DEA model where the input value is unitized to 1 for each c

The Gini coefficient is widely used in academia to discuss how income inequality affects development and growth. However, different Lorenz curves may provide different development and growth outcomes while still leading to the same Gini coefficient. This paper studies the development effects of ?mean division shares?, i.e., the share of income (mean income share) held by people whose household disposable income per capita is below the mean income and the share of the population (mean population share) with this income, using panel data. Our analysis explores how this income share and populatio

Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the role of government interventions in lowering income inequality in post-communist economies of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The focus is set on three key policy instruments: progressive income taxation, social transfers, and minimum wage regulations. We use the Gini coefficient for market income and the Gini coefficient for disposable income to quantify income inequality in observed economies and to estimate how government policies tend to create differences between these two measures. We use open panel data from period 2012–2021 to dete

Abstract Objective To determine the association between income inequality and COVID-19 cases and deaths per million in OECD countries. Methods Cross-sectional regression methods are used to model the relationship between income inequality, as measured by the Gini coefficient, and COVID-19 reported cases and deaths per-million. Results The results demonstrate a significant positive association between income inequality and COVID-19 cases and death per million in all estimated models. A 1% increase in the Gini coefficient is associated with an approximately 4% increase in cases per-million and a

The increase in the share of debt in the capital structure is accompanied by an increase in the required return on equity because companies are exposed to higher financial risk. The beta coefficient of debt-financed companies differs from the beta coefficient of companies that are financed exclusively with equity. Namely, the beta coefficient, under the influence of financial leverage, tends to increase with the growth of indebtedness, that is the systematic risk measured by the coefficient beta of debt-financed companies is higher than the systematic risk of non-leveraged companies, due to fi

This paper demystifies variation in labor’s share of national labor income in China from the perspective of the income gap. We extend the gross national labor income function by introducing a Gini coefficient to support our argument that the share of gross national labor income decreases with an increasing Gini coefficient. The hypotheses are tested using provincial data from 1996 to 2010: (1) the Gini coefficient’s ‘inverted U’ shape partially contributes to the U-shaped evolution of the labor income-share; (2) China’s 15 per cent decline in the labor income share can be explained by the wide
