Abstract The aim of this study was to explore which motives dominate among adolescents when it comes to participation in individual versus team sports. We expected that intrinsic motives will dominate in both groups. We also had a hypothesis that those who compete in individual sport will have higher scores on intrinsic and lower on extrinsic motivation than those in team sport. We also expected that intrinsic motives would explain why they had chosen individual sports instead of team sport. The participants were 78 athletes, 39 in team sports and 39 in individual. Participants’ motives were assessed with the Motives for Physical Activity Measure - Revised (MPAM-R). The extrinsic motive “fitness” had highest score in both groups, followed by the intrinsic motives “interest/enjoyment” and “competence”. The only motive with a difference between team and individual sport was the intrinsic motive interest/enjoyment. The participants in team sport had a higher score on interest/enjoyment than those in individual sport. We conducted a regression analyze to explain why pupils chose individual instead of team sports. “Interest/enjoyment” had an explanation when we included this as a single independent variable. If they participated in team sport they had a higher score on the intrinsic motive “interest/enjoyment”. When we included all the motives none of them had an explanation. In conclusion we could not find any differences in motives for participation in team versus individual sport. We also only partly found support for the assumption that adolescents mostly are intrinsic motivated for participating in sport.

Taking sides is one of the reactions available to third parties in handling a dispute. From the perspective of individual differences, this study was aimed at identifying lay third parties’ motives for side taking and exploring their relations with the Big Five personality traits. We tested our assumptions using three samples: A Dutch student sample ( n = 111), a Dutch employee sample ( n = 101) and a Chinese student sample ( n = 124). The findings revealed four types of side–taking motives: Moral, relational, reward–approaching and sanction–avoiding motives. The results also showed that individuals’ personality traits were relevant to the four types of side–taking motives: Agreeableness was associated with the relational motive for side taking, and intellectual autonomy was associated with the reward–approaching motive, the sanction–avoiding motive and the relational motive for side taking. Implications and explanations of these findings are discussed. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Examining participatory motives clarifies what engages and keeps individuals participating in exercise. The popularity of training at fitness centres has greatly increased over the last two decades, but individual determinants for motivation remain uncertain. This study compared motives between gender and age categories in training and performing physical activity at Norwegian fitness centres. To compare motives, a survey utilising a standardised questionnaire (MPAM-R) was conducted at six different Norwegian fitness centres. It was hypothesised that the intrinsic motive socialisation and extrinsic motive fitness would be more important among the older age categories for both genders, while the extrinsic motive appearance and intrinsic motive enjoyment would be more important among younger age groups. A total response of 183 men and 150 women, aged 14–80 years, was divided into seven categories based on their age and included in the statistical analysis. The main findings after conducting a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures, were that the most important motive for training at fitness centres was increasing fitness, followed by enjoyment, competence, vitality and appearance. The social motive was rated the lowest. Women rated fitness and enjoyment higher compared to men, and men rated the motive for appearance higher than women, but this decreased with age in both genders. With increasing age, the importance of enjoyment and competence decreased in men, while women seemed to place increased importance on vitality with age. The importance of the social motive decreased first as age increased, but then increased again in the age group 41–50 years and older. It was concluded that the motives for participating in exercise at fitness centres was dependent on individual characteristics and that motives about training at fitness centres differed by gender and changed with age.

A growing body of literature has argued that the distinction between forced and voluntary migration can be, in practice, unclear. This literature points out that each individual migrant may have mixed motives for migrating, including both forced and voluntary reasons. Few studies, however, have actually set out to analyze mixed-motive migration. This paper examines the mixed-motive migration of unaccompanied minors from Central America's Northern Triangle states (Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador), using data from a small 2016 survey carried out in 10 shelters for unaccompanied child migrants run by a Mexican government child welfare agency. Using this survey, the paper identifies the immigrating minor's motives, which are oftentimes mixed, and details differences by nationality, gender, and age groups. Some of the key findings include: • Around one-third of the child migrants surveyed had mixed motives, including both forced and voluntary reasons for migrating. • Violence appears most often as a reason for migrating among minors with mixed motives, as opposed to the search for better opportunities, which appears more often as an exclusive motive. • Significant differences between the three nationalities are observed. Relatively few Guatemalan minors indicated violence as a motive, and few displayed mixed motives, as opposed to Hondurans, and especially Salvadorans. • The minors fleeing violence, searching for better opportunities, and indicating both motives at the same time were largely mature male adolescents. • The minors mentioning family reunification as their sole motive were predominantly girls and young children. The results indicate that binary formulations regarding forced and voluntary migration are often inadequate. This has important implications, briefly addressed in the conclusions. These implications include: • the need for migration scholars to consider forced reasons for migrating in the context of mixed-motive migration; • the fact that mixed motives call into question the established, clear-cut categories that determine whether someone is worthy of humanitarian protection or not; • the need to have in-depth, attentive, and individual asylum screening because motives may be interconnected and entangled, and because forced reasons may be hidden behind voluntary motives; and • the need for a more flexible policy approach, so that immigration systems may be more inclusive of migrants with mixed motives.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to develop a measurement scale to assess work motives for hospitality employees utilizing McClelland’s theory of needs as the theoretical underpinning. Design/methodology/approach Both qualitative and quantitative methods were applied to achieve the study purpose. First, individual interviews were conducted to explore employee work motives and develop work motive scale items. Second, data from a self-administered paper questionnaire, completed by 388 respondents, were used to validate the developed scale. Findings Four themes were identified which reflect employees’ perspectives of hospitality jobs and culture: the job itself, need for affiliation, need for achievement and need for power. The developed scale, consisting of 22 items, was found to be reliable and valid in assessing work motives. Research limitations/implications The majority of participants were entry-level employees; therefore, the developed scale may not be useful when assessing work motives of individuals not in front-line positions. Future research could extend the measurement model to investigate work motives of individuals in managerial positions. In addition, future research could assess work motives as antecedents of employee organizational behaviors and attitudes. Practical implications The developed scale could be used as a selection tool to assess applicants’ work motives, thereby assisting employers in making effective hiring decisions. Originality/value This study contributes a new reliable and valid measurement scale developed specifically to address the unique work motives desirable for individuals seeking employment in the hospitality industry.

A relatively new theory of motivation posits that purposeful human behavior may be partly explained by multidimensional individual differences “traits of action” (motives). Its 15 motives can be characterized according to their purpose: individual integrity, competitiveness, and cooperativeness. Existing evidence supports the model on which the motives are based and the reliability and validity of strategies to assess them. This experiment tested whether the hypothetical results of consistent, motivated cooperative and competitive behavior could affect ratings of attractiveness. Male and female participants ( N = 98; M age = 18.8, SD = 1.4) were shown 24 opposite-sex facial photos ranging in attractiveness. The photos were paired with one of three conditions representing theoretical outcomes that would result from low, control, and high levels of cooperative and competitive motives. As predicted, outcome descriptions representing high motive strength of six motives statistically significantly affected ratings of attractiveness. This result was independent of sex of participant and consistent with the theory.

We investigated whether motivated reasoning rooted in partisanship affects the attributions individuals make about violent attackers’ underlying motives and group memberships. Study 1 demonstrated that on the day of the Brexit referendum pro-leavers (vs. pro-remainers) attributed an exculpatory (i.e., mental health) versus condemnatory (i.e., terrorism) motive to the killing of a pro-remain politician. Study 2 demonstrated that pro-immigration (vs. anti-immigration) perceivers in Germany ascribed a mental health (vs. terrorism) motive to a suicide attack by a Syrian refugee, predicting lower endorsement of punitiveness against his group (i.e., refugees) as a whole. Study 3 experimentally manipulated target motives, showing that Americans distanced a politically motivated (vs. mentally ill) violent individual from their in-group and assigned him harsher punishment—patterns most pronounced among high-group identifiers.

The relationship between the psychobiological model of personality types (psychoticism, extraversion, and neuroticism) devised by Eysenck & Eysenck (1985) and Internet use and usage motives was examined. A sample of 210 undergraduate students were asked to report on their motives for using the Internet and how often they engaged in a variety of Internet and web-based activities. The findings demonstrate distinctive patterns of Internet use and usage motives for those of different personality types. Specifically, those scoring high in neuroticism reported using the Internet to feel a sense of â belongingâ and to be informed. Extraverts rejected the communal aspects of the Internet, and made more instrumental and goal-oriented use of Internet services. Finally, those scoring high in psychoticism demonstrated an interest in more deviant, defiant, and sophisticated Internet applications. The role of personality in audience segmentation research is discussed along with implications of the findings in usability and interface design. Suggestions for future research are included.

This thesis studies the set of motivations and constraints involved in the purchasing of products perceived to be environmentally friendly, a phenomenon termed green consumerism, and in related forms of public environmentalism, including household-based recycling and membership of organised environmental groups. Both the public and members of organised environmental groups are of interest as potential green consumers, as well as retailers acting as providers of products and information relevant to green consumerism. The emphasis is upon the development of an integrated qualitative framework for studying environmental motivation and behaviour, and the understanding of the interplay of motivations and constraints at the individual level. Individual motivations are studied with respect to perceived responsibility for the environment and the rationalisation of this on the basis of the perceived cumulative impact of public environmentalism en masse. Constraints upon the translation of this responsibility into behaviour include economic priorities, cultural contexts and quality of life concerns and may be external (socially imposed) or internal to the individual. The latter case represents the refusal to sacrifice and the agency therefore present in the choice of proenvironmental behaviour. Retailers motivations are also studied with respect to perceived environmental responsibility, but the economic context of business gives economic constraints higher priority and more power to constrain environmental responsibility than moral judgements alone. Retailers, the media and environmental groups also function as information providers to seek public support. The uncertainty of much environmental information and the layperson’s perceived lack of evaluative ability work to constrain the usability of environmental information and to permit distrust of experts and elites perceived to be in control of information dissemination, within a wider trust of systems of information provision. The immediacy of information links clearly to action, whereas wider issues and impacts further into the future are more weakly connected to proenvironmental behaviour. Generally, the proenvironmental action taken on the basis of these motivations and constraints is perceived as individualistic rather than collective. All these themes indicate that green consumerism, like other public proenvironmental behaviours, depends upon information, responsibility and the belief in impact. However, contextual constraints of cultural norms, economic situations and internal priorities mediate in the adoption of such behaviours. Upcoming changes in law and markets may influence these factors, making the future of this very recent phenomenon as dynamic as its past.

This thesis was motivated by a wish to understand the slow response to HIV/AIDS and so seeks to address the questions of why and when people help others. The questions are important, as typically it is others who decide who among those most in need receive help. To narrow the focus to motives of help, the discussions consider the helping of distant others, as typically such actions do not involve material gain to the helper. Related literature exists on charitable behaviour but tends towards a marketing approach. This limits its use in providing specific input regarding motives. The economics literature is far more specific and a review identifies four groups of models. These models have a number of weaknesses, so an alternative is suggested: the balance model, and a responsibility formulation, is proposed for this and existing models, which, it is argued, assist in addressing the questions. Following on from the identification and development of alternative theoretical frameworks, these options are taken through a process of attrition. They are contrasted with evidence and theory from the psychology literature - first on helping and then on harming. This exercise suggests the relative strength of the balance model and the maintenance of a responsible self-image model. Both deal well with explaining how help differs according to context and how individuals might avoid or deliberately misinterpret information. The balance model is used to examine individual helping behaviour, by way of an economic experiment. The model is then expanded to consider the social context, which allows for the consideration of the HIV response. The theoretical discussions and the experimental results suggest that individuals feel a responsibility to help. They can, however, try to avoid information which may prompt such feelings and manipulate themselves to reduce the pressure such feelings place on them to help.

"Strong situations" have been shown to decrease behavioral variability, thereby attenuating the criterion-related validity of non-ability individual differences for criteria such as job performance (Barrick&Mount, 1993; Meyer, Dalal,&Bonaccio, 2009). However, it has been suggested that individuals, based on individual differences in implicit motives, may impute discrepant psychological meaning to social stimuli like situational strength--a process sometimes known as differential framing (James&McIntyre, 1996). If different psychological interpretations are attached to strong situation stimuli (e.g., Meyer, Dalal,&Hermida, 2010), an interesting behavioral "double-edged sword" is possible. On the one hand, behaviors pertinent to "primary criteria" (i.e., criteria for which external situational influences and pressures lead to targeted behavioral homogeneity) may occur among those who would not normally engage in them. But, at the same time, behaviors pertinent to "secondary criteria" (i.e., unintended, unforeseen, and potentially reactionary behaviors and/or attitudes) might also increase for some individuals (i.e., those with certain implicit motive characteristics). In other words, high situational strength may simultaneously constrain behavioral variability in primary criteria while serving as a stimulus for differential framing, thereby expanding variability on secondary criteria. The purpose of the present dissertation was twofold: 1) to explore the degree to which situational strength is differentially framed, and 2) to ascertain how the differential framing of situational strength may lead to unintended secondary outcomes. Study 1 findings indicate that, to a partial extent, situational strength is differentially framed by individuals with different implicit motives. Study 2 findings are largely consistent with extant situational strength theory, though partially inconsistent with study predictions.

Den negativa demografiska utvecklingen i glesbyden förväntas leda till en avveckling av flertalet samhällen runt om i landet. Det finns ingen universell lösning för att motverka denna utveckling men förståelse för individers motiv för att flytta till glesbygden kan hjälpa regioner att forma strategier för kompetensförsörjning och bromsa de negativa demografiska förändringarna. Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka anledningarna till att individer från andra samhällen har valt att flytta till glesbygdskommunen Pajala samt hur de har integrerats till samhället. De forskningsfrågor som formulerats ämnade att undersöka följande: motiven till varför individerna valt att flytta till Pajala kommun, om det finns några likheter i individernas beskrivning av sig själva, hur väl individer upplever att de integrerats i samhället samt vilka samhälleliga åtgärder som skulle kunna vidtas för att öka kommunens attraktionskraft samt underlätta nyinflyttade individers integrationsprocess. För insamling av data användes semistrukturerade intervjuer som metod och för bearbetning och analys av data genomfördes en tematisk analys. Resultatet indikerade att sociala faktorer utgjorde de mest förekommande motiven till att flytta till Pajala, den mest framträdande personliga egenskapen var “social försiktighet”, undersökningsdeltagarna hade en upplevelse av ett öppet och inkluderande samhälle men trots detta fanns det integrationssvårigheter samt att det på flera områden fanns potential för utveckling av integrationsunderlättande åtgärder och marknadsföring.
Rural areas today face a negative demographic change that results in a disassembling of local communities. There is no universal solution to these demographic changes but an understanding of individual motives for moving to rural areas could help regions to form strategies to ensure the supply of competence and prevent the negative demographic changes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the reasons why individuals from other societies choose to move to the sparsely populated municipality of Pajala and how their integration process has developed. The scientific questions that were formulated were designed to investigate the following: motives to why the individuals had chosen to move to Pajala, if there was any resemblance in how they described themselves, how well they perceived that they have been integrated in the society and what measures that the society could undertake to increase the attractiveness of the municipality and facilitate the integration process. For the collection of data a semi structured interview was used as the method and for processing and analysis of data a thematic analysis was conducted. The results indicate that the most common motive for individuals to move were based on social factors and the most common trait was “social carefulness”. The participants described Pajala as an open and inclusive society but despite this there were difficulties with integration. Potential for development of both integration and marketing were detected.

As part of their accreditation procedure, universities have to ensure academic feasibility of their study courses. Against that backdrop, student’s workload and study conditions are focused as indicators of quality. However, this prioritization of formal criteria is defined by the module handbooks rather than by the students themselves. Therefore, a mixed-methods-analysis at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) was conducted to shed light on these issues: How can individual expectations and requirements of students towards the academic learning settings be incorporated into quality assessment? Which opportunities of individual development for students exist in the academic setting and do they differ with regard to different departments at the KIT? The data of surveys completed by 324 students of the department of mechanical engineering and 242 students of the department of economics and management at the KIT are the basis of our analysis. The empirical analysis via chi-square-test and Mann-Whitney-U-Test indicates significant distinctions between students of both departments at the KIT concerning their experiences with research and inquiry and their motives for enrolling to university courses. Further analyses via interviews are planned to reveal the complex chains of reasons for this research results such as considerations of course characteristics and cultural condition.

This text tends to shed light on the current position and role of sport, as a kind of contemporary phenomenon, which follows the outlines of dominant global trends, but which, therefore, causes various consequences for individuals, groups and entire societies. It is the result of the analysis of this phenomenon done during the preparation of the master thesis “Sport as a Phenomenon of Contemporary Culture” at the Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Belgrade, and therefore includes one part of it. In considering the phenomenon itself, it starts from the perspective of contemporary cultural studies and tries to see the place of sport in current social movements. Thus, the accent is on its place and role, and also on the causes and consequences of the process of which it is obviously a part of. Starting from its primary features and functions, the focus is on those elements that are an evident part of every sporting event today; the positive ones, which encourage models of behaviour that bring the modern individual closer to the ancient ideals of the athlete, but also the negative ones, which are the reverse of such aspirations, and which today, due to these global trends, are accompanied by the race for money and popularity. These are negativities that have become a completely acceptable component of sport over time, and the consequences of which, however, are not talked about enough, although they are often in the foreground, pushing to the margin those original motives of chivalry and Olympism. In that way, the very essence of the existence of sport and sports competitions is gradually being suppressed.

Анотація:
Much existing work aims to understand how to change human behavior through product-design interventions. Given the diversity of individuals and their motivations, solutions that address different motives are surprisingly rare. We aim to develop and validate a framework that clearly identifies and targets different types of behavioral motives in users. We present a behavior model comprising egoistic, sociocultural and altruistic motives, and apply the model to sustainable behavior. We confirmed the explanatory power of the behavior model by categorizing user comments about an international environmental agreement from multiple news sources. We next developed concepts, each intended to target a single motive type, and elicited evaluations from online respondents who self-assessed their motivation type after evaluating the concepts. We present and discuss correlation results between motive types and preference for products that target these types for two iterations of the experiment. Deviations from our expected results are mainly due to unexpected perceptions, both positive and negative, of our concepts. Despite this, the main value of this work lies in the explicit consideration of a manageable number of different types of motives. A proposed design tool incorporates the three types of motives from the model with the different levels of persuasion others have proposed to change user behavior.

Two studies were conducted to examine how individual interest predicts interactions with domain content and subsequent free-choice exploration. Particular focus was on learners’ acquisition of knowledge and identification of content that triggered curiosity. College student participants reported their individual interest, learned about a topic in ecology (Study 1, N = 85) and astronomy (Study 2, N = 184), responded to prompts for memory of the learning content and curiosity questions, and then had the opportunity to explore additional content related to the topic. In both studies individual interest interacted with whether students’ curiosity was triggered by particular content. In academic domains, individual interest in conjunction with curiosity may be the best predictor of continued behavioral exploration. The results are discussed in the context of the four-phase model of interest development.

La evidencia empírica internacional muestra que las mujeres tienen menos acceso al financiamiento, tanto al crédito personal como al crédito empresario (según el género de quién lidera la empresa). Esta brecha de género, que se debe a factores de oferta y de demanda, preocupa, tanto desde el punto de vista de equidad o igualdad de oportunidades, como de la eficiencia, ya que en una economía de mercado el acceso al financiamiento es clave para la asignación eficiente de los recursos, y cualquier imperfección en su funcionamiento se puede traducir en menos crecimiento económico. En este trabajo se analiza la brecha de género con tres bases de datos distintas, Global Findex, una encuesta a nivel de individuos, SME Finance Forum, datos agregados estimados, y Enterprise Survey, una encuesta a nivel empresarial que informa el género del gerente general. Se destaca que, en ningún caso, ni a nivel personal ni a nivel empresarial, ha sido posible eliminar las brechas incluyendo factores observables. Por lo tanto, las mujeres en la región están más desaventajadas y esto es un motivo de preocupación, ya que incide en la productividad de la economía, la fertilidad y la tasa de acumulación del capital humano, tres dimensiones donde los países estudiados muestran déficit.
