Evidence-based models are critical for understanding caregiver well-being and treatment interventions from a holistic perspective. This study introduces the Indivisible Self: An Evidence-Based Model of Wellness (IS-WEL) as a means for examining the holistic wellness of pediatric stroke caregivers. In this exploratory study, 161 participants completed a demographic survey and the Five-Factor Wellness Inventory (FF-WEL). Results indicate significant wellness score differences between the current sample of pediatric stroke caregivers and the FF-WEL norming sample on the higher order Total Wellness factor, the second-order wellness factors of Creative Self and Social Self, and the third-order wellness factors of thinking, emotions, control, positive humor, and love. These results support the veracity of the IS-WEL as an additional empirically sound holistic approach for understanding and addressing the well-being of stroke caregivers. The authors discuss practical clinical and research implications for utilizing the IS-WEL with pediatric stroke caregivers.

The prevalence of dementia diagnoses has rapidly increased over the past several decades. Family caregivers of persons with dementia face numerous daily challenges that can negatively impact their well-being. The wellness of caregivers is affected by a range of emotional, social, existential, and self-care factors; hence a mental health counseling approach that addresses these elements is needed. The Indivisible Self (IS-WEL) model is an evidence-based framework for conceptualizing the wellness construct and includes multiple factors that are associated with caregiver well-being. Wellness counseling utilizing the IS-WEL model offers a structure for providing counseling services that support the whole caregiver by mobilizing strengths, improving coping, and enhancing overall well-being. A case vignette demonstrating the application of the IS-WEL model for treatment planning and wellness counseling with a caregiver is presented.

AbstractCollege student-athletes (SAs) may experience difficulties while transitioning from college, which could reduce their overall wellness. However, it is essential to understand positive transition experiences and outcomes, as this can guide future research and intervention efforts. The purpose of this study was to explore the factors that led to higher levels of wellness in former SAs. Semi-structured interviews guided by the Indivisible Self Model were completed with former SAs (n = 12). Overall, participants displayed high levels of wellness - most prominently in terms of work and exercise. Many SAs perceived their current wellness was equal, if not better compared to when they were SAs. These results illustrate examples of successful transitions of former SAs, which can guide future research and interventions.

Research was conducted to determine if a holistic wellness model could promote teacher effectiveness with 54 teacher interns at a Mississippi campus. The purpose of this research was to determine whether holistic wellness as defined by creative self, coping self, social self, essential self, and physical self as measured by the 5F-Wel can be used to predict teacher effectiveness as measured by the STAI. The research question proposed for this study was: Is there a relationship between wellness as measured by the Five Factor Wellness Inventory and effective teaching as measured by the STAI? The research design was correlational. A convenience sample of voluntary participants among the 54 teacher interns was used. The predictor variables were the second order factor scores on the 5F-Wel. These factors are creative self, coping self, social self, essential self, and physical self. The dependent variable was the overall formative score on the Student Teacher Assessment Instrument (STAI). Effective teacher research supported the Student Teacher Assessment Instrument as a viable measure of teacher effectiveness. The results obtained show the predictor variables included in the multiple linear regression analysis did not predict teacher effectiveness as measured by the STAI at an accuracy greater than chance. A statistically significant relationship between the predictor variables and dependent variable was not found. Specifically, wellness as measured by the second order factors on the 5F-Wel did not predict teacher effectiveness as measured by the STAI in this study. Recommendations were to replicate this study using similar methodology in other geographical locations. Being that guidelines of state universities are of unison, it can be assumed that dissimilarities exist among the individual programs. Therefore, replicating this study at another university could provide dissimilar results or possibly indentify a specific characteristic from an intern population that would benefit from a holistic wellness model. Key words: teacher efficacy, teacher wellness, holistic wellness, student teacher.

This university wellness model symbolizes self responsibility and control of one's life while riding toward wellness. The number of concepts it contains makes it reasonably simple to implement. All of the major concepts of the model are well defined, resulting in a clear, descriptive picture of how program development should proceed. The model allows easy visualization of the interaction among concepts. In view of the broad scope of the model's concepts and its simplicity, the model could be applied to other workplace situations. Minor program component adjustments may be needed to meet the specific needs of the workplace. The model provides a general framework to guide the planning phase, whether that planner be an occupational health nurse, health officer, or exercise physiologist. This model may apply and be of significance to those who are interested in increasing worker productivity and decreasing employer costs. It may be of particular interest to the nursing profession to generate innovative ideas to help the working populace stay healthy, despite today's crisis of diminishing health care dollars.

This study considered the characteristics of a stay at a wellness destination that enhance psychological well-being. Self-determination theory (SDT) was used to identify the necessary conditions to promote subjective well-being, and focus group sessions were then conducted to evaluate the SDT constructs in the context of a wellness facility. A conceptual model articulating characteristics of the external environment or wellness facility as well as ideal guest experiences, to ensure enhanced well-being as the outcome of a stay at a wellness facility, was then proposed. These conditions included the quality of staff–guest interactions, voluntary participation in novel and engaging activities in the context of a structured daily schedule, encouraging mindfulness practices, guest camaraderie, and enhanced competence or confidence overall.

At a time when the medical field is dominated by the pressures of private insurance demands and government regulations, many people discover they need to be self advocates in order to battle illness and regain their health. Moreover, these issues are not constant, as many countries (like the USA) face changing demographics and continuing radical changes in healthcare funding. These conditions require that patients seeking healthcare re-examine constantly their assumptions on several levels including, but not limited to medical professionals’ motivations, training and accuracy, healthcare philosophies, and recommended treatments. Within this context, patients’ self-advocacy becomes essential. Yet such positive independence regarding the medical professions contradicts traditional American cultural mores. A critical question for this situation springs from adult learning and development: what are the relationships among discovering self-agency in personal healthcare, wellness, and transformative learning? This article uses the frame of an autoethnography to explore the relationship among these domains. The writer’s eight-year journey through debilitating illness includes growing understandings of and connections among transformative learning, mind-body-spirit connections, self-agency, self-advocacy, and cultural concepts of wellness.

Purpose: The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine the effectiveness of one weekly e-mail health (e-health) message in assisting individuals meet their self-identified health goals. Methods: Employees (N=31) from a midwestern city were recruited at a Benefits Fair health booth and divided into two groups based on their desire to receive additional health information. The participants in each group were then randomly assigned to receive basic or detailed e-health messages that were developed using the constructs of the Transtheoretical Model. Participants self-identified a personal wellness goal and how soon they planned to start working toward accomplishing this goal. For 38 weeks, the basic group received weekly e-health messages that contained basic information related to one of the World Health Organization’s seven dimensions of wellness while the detailed group received the basic message plus additional games, webpage links and more extensive information. Participant’s progress along the change continuum and goal completion was assessed 38 weeks later with a Post-Wellness Survey. Results: Participants exhibited positive movement on the behavior change continuum with many reaching their goals, regardless of the type of e-health message received. Conclusion: E-health messages can be a practical, cost-effective way to assist employees in making healthy behavioral changes and meeting their personal health goals.

To explore holistic wellness in depth, single, longitudinal case studies are needed. This article explores the holistic wellness of a woman leader in the male-dominated profession of Engineering, based on the holistic wellness model (HWM). The article focuses on the question of how holistic wellness is constructed by this outstanding individual working in the challenging Australian Engineering field. The study is grounded in Dilthey's modern hermeneutics and applies a single case study design using an in-depth interview, conversations on a regular basis and observation over a period of 18 months.Findings show that the woman leader, working in the male-dominated global Australian global Engineering profession, builds and bases her holistic wellness on life tasks (work and leisure, self-direction, spirituality, friendship and love) and life forces (family, religion, community and business and industry) which are part of the holistic wellness model. Life tasks and life forces support her as she tackles challenges in life, and provide her with the coping mechanisms she needs as a woman leader in Engineering.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose and test a theoretical framework to identify the specific aspects of the guest experience at a wellness facility that contribute to well-being. Self-determination theory (SDT) is used as the theoretical framework. According to SDT, basic needs must be met in order for psychological well-being to be achieved. Thus, in addition to the services and amenities offered, the quality of interactions with staff and service providers are integral to wellness vacation outcomes or basic need fulfillment. Design/methodology/approach Psychological precursors, or basic needs, were estimated using structural equation modeling, and these precursors were significant with the model explaining considerable variation in the outcome variable, well-being. Findings The results suggest that guest experiences can be enhanced if management facilitates guest autonomy, helps guests develop a sense of mastery with respect to activities and encourages positive interactions between guests. Research limitations/implications Study limitations include the single venue used for data collection, sample size and a focus on exercise activities as a proxy for staff–guest interactions. Practical implications This study sheds light on an under-researched area, providing managerial guidelines for wellness tourism destinations with respect to service delivery. Originality/value This study extends the wellness tourism literature by suggesting a framework to assess the service product and optimize guest experiences within the niche wellness sector of the tourism and hospitality industry.

Abstract Background: Wellness Rx is a community-academic partnership program developed through a community engagement and participatory model (CEP) framework, to improve health disparities in an under-resourced predominantly Black community. This program addresses health disparities in chronic disease and social determinants of health through interactive health education, empowerment, and neighborhood support. This program aims to increase access to resources, increase capacity and strengthen relationships with local organizations for sustainable health outcomes. Wellness Rx ran in the community for 4 years with financial and logistical support from an academic medical center. In year 5, the community participated in sustainability training to shift and transfer ownership to community members. Methods: A sustainability training program was developed and delivered to community members to allow for Wellness Rx to be community-led and self-directed. A core group of 12 community members volunteered to serve as the taskforce that would ultimately lead and direct Wellness Rx after the sustainability training. This training included Information sharing of program materials, key partnership contacts, resource lists, skills training on program implementation, volunteer management, grant writing, partnership development and leadership. Results: Since the adoption of the training program, the community has tailored the Wellness Rx to meet their needs and priorities, and encompasses topics within and outside of behavioral health. As leaders of the program, they have expanded their partnerships beyond existing networks and have secured funding for activities. Conclusion: Wellness Rx demonstrates the potential for a program to become self-directed after initial support from an academic medical center. Core components of Wellness Rx can be replicated and implemented as a power-sharing model for long-term sustainability. Citation Format: Manisha Salinas, Monica Albertie. Social workers often deal with complex, challenging, and emotionally exhausting situations that can negatively impact their mental and physical health. When a helping professional is in distress, client care may be compromised. Therefore, the necessity of wellness practices to reduce stress and mitigate burnout is gaining recognition in the social work profession. The National Association of Social Workers (2013) asserts that supervisors are responsible for recognizing and responding to supervisees’ work-related angst. However, there is little research published that addresses pre-burnout symptoms and self-care practices in the supervisory process. The Resiliency-Focused Supervision Model (RFSM), a culturally-responsive, strengths-based framework, was developed to assist supervisors in helping supervisees to manage stress, avoid burnout, and be successful in the workplace. The RSFM’s interrelated domain areas include: 1) structural/environmental, 2) relational, 3) work self-care, and 4) life self-care. The RFSM is a practical, pragmatic option for supervisors to use in partnership with social workers to promote good health, well-being, and resiliency.

Background: The current study sought to understand whether trail users reported better wellness and health status compared to the non-users, and to recognize the associated factors. Methods: Eight trails from different locations and settings within Indiana were selected to sample trail users for the study. Additionally, areas surrounding these eight trails were included in the study as sample locations for trail non-users. Trail users and non-users were intercepted and asked to participate in a survey including demographics, socioeconomic status, physical activity, mood, smoking, nutrition, and quality of sleep. Information was collected and compared between the trail users and the non-users. Association of self-rated health, age, sex, race, marital status, employment, income, education, smoking, nutrition, sleep, and mood with trail use was evaluated by multivariable linear regression model. Results: The final sample size included 1299 trail users and 228 non-users. Environmental factors (access to nature and scenery) were important incentives for 97% and 95% of trail users, respectively. Age, sex, mood, and sleep quality were significantly associated with using the trail. Mean (SD) self-rated wellness and health out of 10 was 7.6 (1.4) in trail users and 6.5 (1.9) in non-users (p < 0.0001). Importantly, trail users were significantly more physically active outside of the trail compared to the non-users (207 vs. 189 min/week respectively, p = 0.01) and had better sleep qualities and mood scores. Using the trails was significantly associated with higher self-rated wellness and health score. The longer the use of trails, the higher the self-rated wellness and health index (β = 0.016, p = 0.03). Conclusion: Compared to not using the trails, trail use was significantly associated with more physical activity, better sleep quality, and higher self-rated wellness and health.

The aim of this paper is to explore the key elements of emotion sustainability (ES) and sustainable partnership (SP) under post-COVID-19. Qualitative primary data is a major part of data analysis to support the findings from qualitative secondary data analysis on ES. The key findings for wellness influence are 1) self-awareness, 2) spiritual support, and 3) trust with flexibility for productivity with ES and SP with the SERVQUAL model. The learning outcomes on literature and 10 interviews with interviewees from Southeast Asia countries related to ES demonstrate that the principles of SERVQUAL are embedded in measuring wellness. For self-awareness related to new wellness skills, factors such as raisin diet, grapes nutrition awareness, antioxidant, happiness emotion, and adaptiveness are explored. Management with influence via ES and SP under post COVID-19 in 2020 has seldom been studied. With these findings, organizations shall have an idea of designing activities to enhance emotional sustainability for staff members. The paper details the learning outcomes generated from the literature in the past as well as the use of SERVQUAL. This is important for organizational development with wellness training and individual/organizational development

Abstract Many wellness programs for older adults focus on physical health or specific conditions, such as heart disease prevention or diabetes management. To supplement these efforts, there is a need for holistic wellness programming to enhance well-being in later life. We developed and piloted a novel wellness coaching program for residents of senior living communities to address this need. The theoretical framework of the program is based on a holistic, multidimensional wellness model and self-determination theory. Staff members from eight residential communities were trained on wellness coaching techniques, such as motivational interviewing, active listening, and group facilitation skills, before they led the 9-week resident wellness coaching program. A total of 79 residents, ages 71 to 97 (M = 84.3, SD = 6.5), completed the pilot program. The resident wellness coaching program included a mixture of individual and group coaching sessions. The coaching sessions provided wellness education, social support, and space to share progress on wellness goals. Participants completed surveys at three time points: pre-program, post-program, and 1-month follow-up. Residents reported high satisfaction with the overall program and its components. Repeated measures ANOVAs were conducted to examine changes in wellness over time. Comparison of pre- and post-test scores revealed significant improvements in health satisfaction, physical and psychological quality of life, purpose, loneliness, relatedness, and competence. Some of these changes, such as increases in psychological quality of life and decreases in loneliness, persisted at the one-month follow-up. These findings have implications for the development and implementation of wellness coaching programs with older adults.

Objective: This study was performed during the COVID-19 pandemic to better understand the indicators of self-rated wellness and health among healthcare workers. Methods: Sleep pattern, mood status, nutritional condition, physical activity, habits and the subjective wellness and health index of the healthcare workers of a university affiliated hospital were surveyed. Paired t-tests were performed to compare the participants’ quality of life before and after the outbreak of COVID-19. Multivariable linear regression models with a backward elimination stepwise process determined the parameters that significantly correlated with self-reported wellness and health. Results: Of the 200 healthcare workers who participated in this study, 119 (60%) were female and 81 (40%) were male, with a mean (SD) age of 28.8 (5.9) years. We found that the COVID-19 pandemic significantly changed many lifestyle factors compared to the pre-pandemic states. The scores of sleep quality, mood status, pre-planned physical activity and social activity were reduced by 30%, 40%, 50% and 70%, respectively. The average night sleep duration before the pandemic was 7 h and 22 min, whereas during the pandemic it decreased to 6 h and 44 min, a debt of 38 min in sleep duration every night. As found by multivariable regression modelling, self-reported wellness and health before the pandemic period was associated with wake-up time, mood status, physical activity and diet. During the pandemic period, in addition to these variables, night sleep duration (β = 0.049, p = 0.049) and nap duration (β = 0.009, p = 0.01) were left in the final multivariable model and correlated significantly with the wellness and health index. Conclusion: COVID-19 has detrimentally affected healthcare workers’ well-being and quality of life. Sleep duration was the main factor correlated with subjective wellness and health index during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Background Lifestyle change programs have demonstrated encouraging improvements in the overall well-being of participants in clinical, worksite, and university settings. However, the majority of published research utilizes accredited, professional health coaches. This study seeks to establish the efficacy of health and wellness coaching implemented by coaching trainees in a workplace/university framework. Methods University faculty, staff, and students were recruited (n = 74) to participate in an 8-week health and wellness coaching program comprised of 3 coaching sessions. The wellness coaches were undergraduate students enrolled in a university Health and Wellness Coaching practicum course. Participants reported satisfaction in 12 wellness dimensions. Their satisfaction scores were used as proxy to encourage them to focus their behavior change within 1 or more of 12 wellness dimensions. The self-reported wellness dimension scores were recorded at baseline, and subsequent changes in the selected dimension scores were evaluated. The control group received telephonic and video conference-based coaching, while the intervention group participants were also offered face-to-face coaching and social-embedded support. Results Participants most frequently selected to work on 2 of the 12-wellness dimensions. No differences between groups were found in the initial wellness scores. A statistical analysis was performed on dimensions with 20 or more responses to determine whether the intervention (social support), coaching session, and other variables had a significant impact. A mixed model adjusted on group, coaching session, coaching trainee, and participant was performed. The eating/nutrition and thinking wellness dimensions exhibited a significant positive change in wellness scores in both groups ( P < .001 and P < .0143, respectively). Discussion An increase in eating/nutrition and thinking wellness scores in both groups suggests that the coaching trainees were effective in motivating change to boost participants’ well-being. The results justify further research to evaluate the cost-effectiveness, approaches, and efficacy of coaching trainees in worksite wellness programs.

Sometimes, it is difficult for a profession to move forward because its members interpret emerging conceptual models from the perspective of old frameworks. Each of the five reactants in this issue of The Counseling Psychologist interpreted the strength-based counseling model within their own self-adopted framework—Adlerian psychology, role strain theory, optimal development, self-efficacy, or wellness. Only one reactant had the courage to say that although counseling psychology has historically “talked the talk” about building strengths in individuals, it has steadily embraced the medical model. If counseling psychology is to go forward, we will need honest appraisals of what goals we have and have not accomplished. Strength-based counseling represents a paradigm shift in psychology from the deficit medical model to one that stresses clients’ strengths. The model will hopefully encourage the profession to act on its espoused commitment to strength development for individuals across the life span.

BackgroundPerceived health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is fundamental to well-being and is a meaningful way to measure physical and mental health.Local ProblemNo standard method exists for measuring perceived HRQOL during the COVID-19 pandemic in participants as they attempt to improve their self-determined wellness goals. An implementation plan that considers the social distancing limitations imposed can be used to predict an individual's likelihood of long-term success.MethodsDuring the four, 2-week plan-do-study-act (PDSA) cycles, the Social Cognitive Theory model informed the implementation of the four core interventions. To guide iterative changes, the data was analyzed through Excel and run charts.InterventionsThe four core interventions were the shared decision-making tool (SDMT), health mobile app tool (HMAT), wellness tracker tool (WTT), and the team engagement plan.ResultsAmong 28 participants, perceived quality of life increased by 70%, engagement in shared decision-making increased to 82%, app use and confidence increased to 85%, and goal attainment reached 81%.ConclusionsThe SDMT, health app, and wellness tracker created a methodical plan of accountability for increasing participant wellness. The contextual barrier of the COVID-19 pandemic added a negative wellness burden which was mitigated by creating a patient-centered culture of wellness.

Because multiple sclerosis (MS) is a multidimensional chronic disease, effective management of the illness requires a multidimensional approach. We describe a wellness program that was designed to facilitate positive health choices throughout the course of MS and present initial data analyses. We hypothesized that over the course of the program, participants would demonstrate improvement in the domains assessed. The wellness program included educational sessions in physical, mental, social, intellectual, and spiritual domains specifically targeting improved self-efficacy, physical functioning, coping skills, symptom management, and nutrition. An outcomes data collection software program was adapted to facilitate real-time patient self-report and clinician entry data collection for many domains throughout the wellness program. Initial assessment of serial measures (intake to discharge) from 65 people with MS showed improvement in several domains, including functional status (P &lt; .05), fatigue (P &lt; .05), fear-avoidance beliefs regarding physical activities (P &lt; .05), depression (P &lt; .05), somatization (P &lt; .05), and pain (P &lt; .05). In addition, using a model of risk for interpersonal distress, patients whose risk of elevated depression and anxiety decreased over the course of the program reported greater gains in functional status (P &lt; .05). The results suggest possible future treatment strategies and indicate strengths and weaknesses of the wellness program, which are being used to improve the program.

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) mostly affects young and middle-aged adults and is known to be associated with a host of factors involved in overall quality of life and well-being. The biopsychosocial model of disease takes into account the multifaceted nature of chronic illness and is commonly applied to MS. The present investigation examined the effectiveness of a 10-week psychoeducational MS wellness program that was developed on the basis of the biopsychosocial model and a wellness approach to treatment. Methods: The program consisted of 90-minute, weekly psychoeducational wellness group sessions aimed at improving quality of life by increasing awareness of the various social, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual factors that can affect the overall well-being of people living with MS. Fifty-four individuals with MS participated in the study (43 individuals who completed the wellness intervention and 11 individuals with MS who did not participate; “controls”). All participants completed a series of self-report questionnaires at baseline and at the 10-week follow-up, assessing depression, anxiety, perceived stress, cognitive complaints, pain, social support, and fatigue. Results: Repeated-measures analysis revealed improvements in depression, anxiety, overall mental health, perceived stress, and pain in the treatment group compared with the control group. No significant differences were observed between the groups on measures assessing social support, cognitive complaints, and fatigue. Conclusions: The findings suggest that a psychoeducational wellness program is effective in improving the overall quality of life and well-being of individuals with MS.

Health care clinicians who care for seriously ill and dying patients have been known to be at higher risk for burnout and moral distress. When not well supported in their workplace, clinicians may suffer additional adverse outcomes to their overall wellbeing. Self-care is one way to help mitigate these adverse outcomes. The literature has described formalized debriefing not only as a self-care strategy but an intervention to promote healthy team development. The focus of this paper will showcase how social work and spiritual care practitioners in our institution worked collaboratively to support an inpatient oncology unit to address issues related to burnout by providing staff with monthly debriefing sessions intended to enhance self-care and wellness in the workplace.

Investing in recreation and wellness in transitional economies requires updating an inclusive approach and adjusting national regional policies. The article aims to provide the game and theoretical decision-making modeling regarding the direction of capital investment in the development of inclusive wellness and recreation in the regions of Ukraine. Considering this, a comparative analysis of relevant indicators, above all, the self-assessment level of population health, has been conducted. The “game against nature” method allows formalizing the social and market contradictions of regional development of wellness and recreation. Using Ukraine as an example, the analysis of the payoff matrix by decision-making criteria such as the Bayes-Laplace’s criterion, the Savage’s criterion, the Wald’s criterion and the Hurwitz’s criteria, establishes the priority areas for investment: the maximum investment amount is for the middle-income regions and the minimum – for the high-income regions. However, there is a significant disparity in investment in health and recreation across regions. The situation requires a transformation of the target function: from providing social subsidies to maximizing person’s well-being in the physical, mental, social and financial aspects. In the absence of inclusive economic institutions, it is proposed to equalize the weight of the “investment in health” and “investment in recreation” factors and redistribute the total volume of capital investment in regions with relatively low solvency and population health indicators.

Background: Wellness activities can benefit health, yet committed adherence is challenging. Objectives: Identify factors associated with committed participation in an amputee wellness-walking program and determine benefits of committed participation. Study design: Prospective longitudinal cohort. Methods: Two former Paralympians led the wellness-walking sessions. Participants provided medical history and self-reported balance confidence and prosthetic functional measures. Physiotherapy professionals/paraprofessionals assessed balance and gait. Committed participants—those attending three sessions within 3 years—were compared to one-time-only participants using Fisher’s exact and independent t-tests. First and third sessions for committed participants were compared with t-tests. A bootstrapped multivariable logistic regression model was developed using significant univariate predictors. Results: A total of 305 volunteers averaged 55.7 ± 15.2 years, including 68.4% men, 78.4% White race; 51.8% with dysvascular amputations, 40.5% with ⩾1 prosthetic knee; and 49.1% independent community walkers. Committed participants were initially similar to one-time-only participants ( p > 0.05) except for fewer years since amputation ( p = 0.007), better balance ability ( p = 0.001), and greater likelihood of dieting ( p = 0.030). The final model—balance ability (odds ratio = 2.4), dieting (odds ratio = 3.3), and years since amputation (odds ratio = 0.94)—identified 88.0% of committed participants ( p = 0.007). Balance confidence and functional improvements after three sessions were not significant ( p > 0.07). Conclusion: Committed participants were more likely to diet, have better balance ability, and have more recent amputations than one-time-only participants. Clinical relevance Knowing which characteristics identify people most likely to become committed participants—such as people with recent amputations, an interest in dieting, and better balance ability—may help health practitioners from different professions promote consistent participation in wellness activities that may benefit self-reported function.

The healthcare system and public health community are often underprepared to support the needs of people with disabilities and to include them equitably in wellness programs (e.g., exercise, leisure, nutrition, stress management) offered to the general community. Consequently, the vast majority of people with disabilities are unable to make the transition from “patient” to “participant,” which contributes to many of the health disparities reported in this population. People with disabilities have a disproportionately higher rate of acquiring secondary conditions such as obesity, cardiovascular comorbidity, pain, fatigue, depression, deconditioning, and type 2 diabetes, often resulting from poor access to home and community-based health promotion/wellness programs that include physical activity, nutrition, stress reduction, and sleep hygiene, among others. Achieving health equity in people with disabilities requires a multi-stage approach that includes person-centered referral to wellness programs, empowering people with disabilities to become self-managers of their own health and ensuring that community-based programs and services are inclusive. A three-stage model for addressing health and wellness needs across the home and community settings is described, which is currently being used in a large federally funded center in the US with potential generalizability across the world.

Background: Established relationships between researchers, stakeholders and potential participants are integral for recruitment of potential older adult participants and Evidence-Based Programs (EBPs) for chronic disease management have empirically been shown to help improve health and maintain healthy and active lives. To accelerate recruitment in EBPs and potential future research, we propose a Wellness Pathway allowing for delivery within multipurpose senior centers (MPCs) linked with medical facilities among lower-income urban older adults. The study aims were to: 1) assess the effectiveness of three MPC-delivered EBPs on disease management skills, health outcomes, and self-efficacy; and 2) assess the feasibility of the proposed Wellness Pathway for lower-income urban-dwelling older adults of color. Methods: We administered surveys and conducted a pre-post analysis among participants enrolled in any 1 of 3 MPC-based EBPs (n=53). To assess feasibility of the pathway, we analyzed survey data and interviews (EBP participants, MPC staff, physicians, n=10).Results: EBP participation was associated with greater disease management skills (increased time spent stretching and aerobic activity) but not improvements in self-efficacy or other health outcomes. Interviews revealed: 1) older adults valued EBPs and felt the Wellness Pathway feasible; 2) staff felt it feasible given adequate growth management; 3) physicians felt it feasible provided adequate medical facility integration. Conclusion: MPC-based EBPs were associated with improvements in disease management skills among older adults; a proposed Wellness Pathway shows early evidence of feasibility and warrants further investigation. Future efforts to implement this model of recruiting older adults of color into EBPs should address barriers for implementation and sustainability. Childhood obesity is a growing concern, and while progress has been made to understand the association between multiple biological factors (i.e., genetics, nutrition, exercise etc.), little is known about the relationship between mental health and childhood obesity. In this paper, we offer a review of current evidence about the association between mental health and childhood obesity. A systematic literature search of peer-reviewed, English-language studies published between January 2000 and January 2011 was undertaken and resulted in 759 unique records, of which 345 full-text articles were retrieved and 131 articles were included. A theoretical model is proposed to organize the paper and reflect the current state of the literature and includes psychological factors (i.e., depression and anxiety, self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, eating disordered symptoms, and emotional problems); psychosocial mediating variables (i.e., weight-based teasing and concern about weight and shape), and wellness factors (i.e., quality of life and resiliency/protective factors). We conclude with a number of recommendations to support the creation of solutions to the rise in childhood obesity rates that do not further marginalize overweight and obese children and youth and that can potentially improve the well-being of all children and youth regardless of their weight status.

<b><i>Background:</i></b> Anastomotic leak is regarded as one of the most feared complications of bowel surgery; avoiding leaks is a major priority. Attempts to reduce or eliminate leaks have included alternate anastomotic techniques. Human oral mucosa stem cells (hOMSC) are self-renewing and expandable cells derived from buccal mucosa. Studies have shown that hOMSC can accelerate tissue regeneration and wound healing. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether hOMSC can decrease anastomotic leak rates in a murine model of colon surgery. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> Two experiments were performed. In the first study, mice underwent colonic anastomosis using five interrupted sutures. hOMSC (<i>n</i> = 7) or normal saline (NS; <i>n</i> = 17) was injected into the colon wall at the site of the anastomosis. To evaluate whether hOMSC can impact anastomotic healing, the model was stressed by repeating the first experiment, reducing the number of sutures used for the construction of the anastomosis from five to four. Either hOMSC (<i>n</i> = 8) or NS (<i>n</i> = 20) was injected at the anastomosis. All mice that survived were sacrificed on postoperative day 7. Anastomotic leak rate, mortality, daily weight, and daily wellness scores were compared. <b><i>Results:</i></b> In the five-suture anastomosis, there were no differences in anastomotic leak rate, mortality, or daily weight. Mice that received hOMSC had significantly higher wellness scores on postoperative day 2 (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.05). In the four-suture anastomosis, there was a significant decrease in leak rate (70% [NS] vs. 25% [hOMSC], <i>p</i> = 0.029) and higher wellness scores in mice that received hOMSC (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.05). <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> Our study suggests that injecting hOMSC at the colonic anastomosis can potentially reduce anastomotic leak and improve postoperative wellness in a murine model of colon surgery.

Forecasting market risk lies at the core of modern empirical finance. We propose a new self-exciting probability peaks-over-threshold (SEP-POT) model for forecasting the extreme loss probability and the value at risk. The model draws from the point-process approach to the POT methodology but is built under a discrete-time framework. Thus, time is treated as an integer value and the days of extreme loss could occur upon a sequence of indivisible time units. The SEP-POT model can capture the self-exciting nature of extreme event arrival, and hence, the strong clustering of large drops in financial prices. The triggering effect of recent events on the probability of extreme losses is specified using a discrete weighting function based on the at-zero-truncated Negative Binomial (NegBin) distribution. The serial correlation in the magnitudes of extreme losses is also taken into consideration using the generalized Pareto distribution enriched with the time-varying scale parameter. In this way, recent events affect the size of extreme losses more than distant events. The accuracy of SEP-POT value at risk (VaR) forecasts is backtested on seven stock indexes and three currency pairs and is compared with existing well-recognized methods. The results remain in favor of our model, showing that it constitutes a real alternative for forecasting extreme quantiles of financial returns.

As members of the largest and most trusted healthcare profession, nurses are role models and critical partners in the ongoing quest for the health of their patients. Findings from the American Nurses Association Health Risk Appraisal suggested that nurses give the best patient care when they are operating at the peak of their own wellness. They also revealed that 68% of the surveyed nurses place their patients’ health, safety, and wellness before their own. Globally, several nursing codes of ethics include the requirement of self-care. Often, these codes embed the responsibility to protect and promote one’s own health within the clearly described obligation to provide safe patient care. The American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses is unique in that it states explicitly that nurses must adopt self-care as a duty to self in addition to their duty to provide care to patients. One of the basic assumptions of Watson’s Philosophy and Science of Caring is that caring science is the essence of nursing and the foundational disciplinary core of the profession. Watson’s theory of human caring provides support for the engagement in self-care. Two important value assumptions of Watson’s Caritas are that “we have to learn how to offer caring, love, forgiveness, compassion, and mercy to ourselves before we can offer authentic caring and love to others” and we also must “treat ourselves with loving-kindness and equanimity, gentleness, and dignity before we can accept, respect, and care for others within a professional caring-healing model.” Embedded within several caritas processes is an outline for a holistic approach to caring for self and others that can guide nurses to improve their mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health.

The aim of this study is to find out if employees of the manufacturing company experience perceived stress. A descriptive research design was employed and stratified random sampling method to evaluate the stress levels of 35 employees at a clothing manufacturing company. A standardized self-questionnaire validated for the assessment of stress (Perceived Stress Scale) was used to collect data. The study highlighted a high level of stress among individuals: 28.6% of them were suffering from stress and 57.1 where suffering from moderate stress, 14.3% level was attributed to those with a low stress. Results showed that females are more susceptible to high level stress than males. A statistically significant association was observed between stress and gender. The findings indicated that self-controlling seeking social support, positive reappraisal and accepting responsibility are some of the top recommended positive ways for employees’ stress. The major recommendation to the company is to adopt the stress management model developed from the six domains of wellness. Keywords: Perceived stress; Employees; Workplace; Wellness;

Abstract. In 2020, 17.1% of the population in the European Union was at risk of poverty ( Eurostat, 2021 ). Poverty is often assessed using objective measures such as absolute and relative income levels. However, different individuals may experience different levels of financial stress at the same income level. Therefore, it is crucial to have measures that capture the subjective components of poverty. In this multinational study, we tested the validity and measurement invariance of the Personal Financial Wellness (PFW) scale across six European countries (Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Spain, and the UK) and the US, and six languages (German, Italian, Dutch, Slovenian, Spanish, and English). Results provided mixed evidence for the fit of the expected one-factor structure. Exploration of a modified one-factor structure indicated an improved fit. The scale showed excellent reliability, and convergent and discriminant validity. This suggests that the PFW scale captures subjective financial stress and is a dependable self-report measure. Measurement invariance testing of the modified one-factor model showed metric invariance across Slovenia, Spain, the UK, and the US. Given that scalar invariance was not achieved and the invariance testing was based on an exploratory model, we do not advise the use of the scale for comparisons between countries.

Abstract Health care systems have historically relied on family caregivers to provide long-term care for older adults, often including medically complex care for which they have no medical training. Yet there are few interventions in place to assist them within health care systems. The Rush Caregiver Initiative (Rush-CGI) provides system-level and caregiver interventions. Rush-CGI’s system-level interventions focus on culture change, including modifying workflows, training, and electronic health record data. Rush-CGI caregiver interventions begin with assessment of needs and provision of resources for caregivers, offering interprofessional family-based interventions. Interventions include a Teach-Back Clinic, Family Care Planning sessions, and Goals of Medical Care meetings, all held on an outpatient basis either in person or virtually. Outcomes include decreased caregiver depression and anxiety, and increased caregiving self-efficacy. This presentation will discuss creating system level change and providing customized caregiver interventions, including how the Rush-CGI can be modified to fit a variety of patient populations.

Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted students in psychiatric clinical rotations. Clinicals were frequently limited or canceled, restricting exposure of student nurses to this experience. Many modifications led to permanent changes in the psychiatric clinical setting. Objectives The purpose of this manuscript is to provide a cohesive approach to serving student nurses in the post-pandemic psychiatric clinical setting. Methods A theoretical exploration of the literature framed by the Roy Adaptation Model (RAM) was conducted. Discussion Results are presented using the four modes of the theory: Physiological, Self-Concept, Role Function, and Interdependence. Conclusions Findings include strategies to enhance student learning while supporting students’ health and wellness. Educators and practitioners should provide high-quality, safe learning environments for student nurses.

Mobile health (mHealth) apps show potential contributions as interactive systems for managing users' health conditions. They are also used to improve health habits using behaviour change strategies. However, the trends, effectiveness, and design practices of these apps in terms of behaviour change are unclear yet. With a collaboration between researchers, domain experts, interactive systems developers and professionals, this paper aims to fill this gap by systematically investigating 70 mHealth apps using two popular behaviour change frameworks, namely App Behaviour Change Scale (ABACUS) and the Persuasive System Design (PSD) model. The study investigates the most common strategies and how these strategies were designed and implemented in the apps to achieve the targeted design objectives. Furthermore, the study evaluates apps' behaviour change potential using the behaviour Change Score (BCS), a measure we introduced to evaluate how the apps employ behaviour change strategies. The results show that 1) Journaling is the most common category of apps. 2) the most employed strategies are Self-monitoring, Customize and Personalize, and Reminders. And 3) there is a positive correlation between apps' ranks (based on ratings and installation) and the BCS score of most strategies. Based on our findings, we offer recommendations for designing and developing mHealth apps and present opportunities for future work in this area.

Background The Wellness Environment app study is a longitudinal study focused on promoting health in college students. Objective The two aims of this study were (1) to assess physical activity (PA) variation across the days of the week and throughout the academic year and (2) to explore the correlates that were associated with PA, concurrently and longitudinally. Methods The participants were asked to report their wellness and risk behaviors on a 14-item daily survey through a smartphone app. Each student was provided an Apple Watch to track their real time PA. Data were collected from 805 college students from Sept 2017 to early May 2018. PA patterns across the days of the week and throughout the academic year were summarized. Concurrent associations of daily steps with wellness or risk behavior were tested in the general linear mixed-effects model. The longitudinal, reciprocal association between daily steps and health or risk behaviors were tested with cross-lagged analysis. Results Female college students were significantly more active than male ones. The students were significantly more active during the weekday than weekend. Temporal patterns also revealed that the students were less active during Thanksgiving, winter, and spring breaks. Strong concurrent positive correlations were found between higher PA and self-reported happy mood, 8+ hours of sleep, ≥1 fruit and vegetable consumption, ≥4 bottles of water intake, and ≤2 hours of screen time (P<.001). Similar longitudinal associations found that the previous day’s wellness behaviors independently predicted the following day’s higher PA except for mood. Conversely, the higher previous-day PA levels were associated with better mood, more fruit and vegetable consumption, and playing less music, but with higher liquor consumption the next day. Conclusions This study provides a comprehensive surveillance of longitudinal PA patterns and their independent association with a variety of wellness and risk behaviors in college students.

The present humanistic model for counseling homeless men assumed that counseling goals evolve from each client's internal frame of reference and may include a positive adaptation to his homeless experience. The model encompasses Rogers' necessary components of psychotherapy, Sullivan's interpersonal theory of psychiatry, Adler's use of wellness and encouragement, and Privette's peak-performance contribution. Factor analysis of history of homelessness, background data, ratings of subjective health and of happiness, and scores on Jones and Crandall's Short Index of Self-actualization yielded nine factors relevant to counseling. Empirical support was reported for placing a counseling services program in a multiservice facility for homeless persons.

SummaryObjectives: Health Risk Appraisals (HRAs) have been implemented in a variety of settings, however few studies have examined the impact of computerized HRAs systematically in primary care. The study aimed at the development and pilot testing of a novel, comprehensive HRA tool in primary care practices. Methods: We designed, implemented and pilot tested a novel, web-based HRA tool in four pair-matched intervention and control primary care practices (N = 200). Outcomes were measured before and 12 months after the intervention using the HRA, patient surveys, and qualitative feedback. Intervention patients received detailed feedback from the HRA and they were encouraged to discuss the HRA report at their next wellness visit in order to develop a personalized wellness plan. Results: Estimated life expectancy and its derivatives, including Real Age and Wellness Score were significantly impacted by the HRA implementation (P<0.001). The overall rate of 10 preventive maneuvers improved by 4.2% in the intervention group vs. control (P = 0.001). The HRA improved the patient-centeredness of care, measured by the CAHPS PCC-10 survey (P = 0.05). HRA use was strongly associated with better self-rated overall health (OR = 4.94; 95% CI, 3.85–6.36) and improved up-to-dateness for preventive services (OR = 1.22; 95% CI, 1.12–1.32). A generalized linear model suggested that increase in Wellness Score was associated with improvements in patient-centeredness of care, up-to-dateness for preventive services and being in the intervention group (all P<0.03). Patients were satisfied with their HRA-experience, found the HRA report relevant and motivating and thought that it increased their health awareness. Clinicians emphasized that the HRA tool helped them and their patients converge on high-impact, evidence-based preventive measures. Conclusions: Despite study limitations, results suggest that a comprehensive, web-based, and goal-directed HRA tool can improve the receipt of preventive services, patient-centeredness of care, behavioral health outcomes, and various wellness indicators in primary care settings.Citation: Nagykaldi ZJ, Voncken-Brewster V, Aspy CB, Mold JW. Human industrial activities are bringing physiochemical changes to the land, air, and seas and leading towards more uncertain climate changes, like drought, thunderstorms, and heat waves. This has resulted in water scarcity because of overexploitation of water resources. It is therefore imperative to develop effective conservation programs that consider the factors that affect the decisions of people with regard to water conservation and sustainable activities. This study considered the perspective of a developing country and explored the impact of three psychosocial factors, i.e., subjective happiness, perceived stress, and personal well-being, on individuals’ current and future intentions to conserve water. A sample of 304 respondents was collected via a self-administered questionnaire containing measures of demographic characteristics, psychological factors, and current and future water conservation behavior. The data were collected online as well as through hard copies. Correlational analysis showed that the three psychosocial factors had significant associations with both current and future intentions to conserve water. Furthermore, the effect size (f2) demonstrated that personal well-being was a significant predictor of current and future water conservation behavior. Stress, however, did not serve as a significant predictor of either current or future water conservation behavior. In contrast, subjective happiness was a significant predictor of only future water conservation behavior.

Overweight and obesity has reach pandemic levels, with two-thirds (67%) of adult Australians classified as overweight or obese. As two of the most significant behavioral risk factors for obesity are modifiable (diet and exercise), there exists an opportunity for treatment through workplace health promotion initiatives. As one of Australia’s largest industries with its own unique workplace factors, the mining industry has previously reported higher than population levels of overweight and obesity. This represented an opportune setting to test the RESHAPE workplace wellness program. RESHAPE is an eight-step framework (based on the WHO ‘Health Workplace Framework and Model’) which aims to provide a sustained approach to wellness in the workplace. This paper presents baseline findings from a pilot study that aimed to implement RESHAPE at three mine sites in NSW, Australia, and investigates the issue of overweight and obesity in the coal mining industry. Across three mine sites, 949 coal miners were examined cross-sectionally on a range of workplace, wellness, health, diet, and exercise factors using a paper-based survey. This was a predominantly male sample (90.4%) with the majority (59.2%) of participants aged 25–44 years. Self-reported height and weight measures indicated that less than 20 percent (18.9%) of participants were in a healthy BMI range, while there were effectively equal numbers of overweight (40.9%) and obese (39.1%) participants. Only 3.5% of participants met the daily recommendation for vegetables (5 serves) and shift-workers had greater association with elevated BMI compared to non-shift workers (B = 1.21, 95% CI: 0.23, 2.20, p = 0.016). Poor nutrition is likely to be a key component in elevated levels of overweight and obesity within this industry, with workplace factors compounding challenges workers face in implementing health behavior change. Future studies would benefit from assessing diet and physical activity knowledge in relation to recommendations and serving sizes.

<p><strong><em>Objective:</em> </strong>This study responded to a community-identified need to form an evidence base for interventions to promote mental health and wellness among youth in Nunavut. <strong><em>Methods: </em></strong>A literature review was conducted using the terms <em>adolescence </em>and <em>Inuit</em> and <em>intervention </em>or <em>program </em>or <em>camp </em>or <em>land-based</em>. PubMed and Google Scholar databases were used to find peer-reviewed and grey literature on community-based youth programs. The literature review was presented to parents, elders, and youth for discussion over several months in 2009-2010. <strong><em>Results:</em></strong> Key themes included: self-esteem, physical activity, stress and coping, positive peer relationships, Inuit identity, mental health and well-being, and the effects of intergenerational trauma on youth in Nunavut. Themes were incorporated into a model for youth mental health interventions based on Inuit terminology, philosophy, and societal values—the Eight <em>Ujarait</em>/Rocks Model. The model was implemented as a camp program in 6 pilots in 5 communities from 2011 to 2013. Data were collected before and after the camp. Results indicated that the program fostered physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness among youth. Parent observations of participants included an improvement in behaviour and attitude, strong cultural pride, greater confidence in identity, and improved family and community relationships. <strong><em>Conclusion: </em></strong>Evidence-based, community-driven models for youth mental health interventions in the North hold promise. The application of one such model through a camp program had a lasting impact on the individuals involved, beyond their immediate participation. Long-term monitoring of the participants, and ongoing evaluations of camps as they continue to unfold across Nunavut, are needed to contribute to the robust evidence base for this program over time.</p>

In the last 10 years sport psychology expanded its applicability in a variety of fields which have helped to address some of the challenges related to high level performance and sport competition. When we talk about performance in its wider sense, sport psychology is able to help develop a better understanding on how strategies can be adopted in improving general human performance levels. This includes increasing the knowledge of key concepts such as motivation, self-confidence and resilience. Furthermore performance in its wider sense helps in the understanding of the impact of stress and arousal and how these can affect both positively and negatively performance levels including appreciating individual differences as well as dynamics between groups of individuals. In this paper performance rather than solely be related to the field of competitive or professional sport has been discussed in people with ASCs and aims to explore how by adopting a positive psychological model in the formulation of individual assessments and subsequent interventions have led to improvement in individual skills, participation, engagement and ultimately quality of life. Positive psychological principles, such as the role of wellbeing and wellness, the PERMA Model has increased our understanding of human potentials, performance and wellbeing. The aim of this paper is to present and reflect on the applicability and benefits of adopting sport psychology models, the PERMA model and positive psychological principles in special education and care settings with the presentation and discussion of their theoretical and some practical implementation in two case studies.
