The physical education teacher education (PETE) faculty charged with oversight and delivery of initial teacher licensure programs confront several challenges. Some necessitate responses to revised and new standards, while others can be reframed as timely opportunities for improvement and innovation, whether in response to or in anticipation of rapid, dramatic societal change. Six examples of challenges as opportunities are discussed in this chapter: (a) the need to determine the skills, essential knowledge, values, and sensitivities for work practices in the schools of the future; (b) the dual priority for evidence-based practices in PETE and in school programs; (c) PETE faculty members’ obligations to adapt their pedagogical practices and revise preservice programs in concert with expert, veteran teachers from schools with exemplary programs; (d) manifest needs to make choices among competing, evidence-supported physical education program models; (e) needs and opportunities to redesign PETE programs, especially those located in kinesiology departments; and (f) emergent policy imperatives to demonstrate the value-added effects, both short- and long-term, on tomorrow’s teachers.

It is widely recognized that the best education systems have the best teachers, and a school can only ever be as good as its teachers. However, the quality of a teaching force is dependent on the availability of good quality teacher education program. Hence, the purpose of this study was to explore the challenges of initial teacher preparation program from insiders’ perspectives. Data were collected via semi-structured interview and analyzed narratively. The findings of the study revealed that failure to attract the right people into teaching, poor quality of teacher training programs, weak University and School partnership, unfair and disproportionate treatment of teacher education, policy- practice gap, poor teacher retention strategy, and poor information and communication technology integration as the challenges undermining the teacher education program. The need to attracting best and brightest candidates into the profession, strengthening teacher education programs, improving the management of teacher education, valuing teachers and improving their status are areas identified as implication of the study.

In Australia, there is currently no official training pathway or qualification required for working in Flexible Learning Programs (FLPs). This causes a problem for both new teachers wishing to work in this area and for employers who have no way of knowing whether a new teacher has the appropriate skills or knowledge to teach in this alternative context. To address this problem, we designed and implemented a program during which Initial Teacher Education (ITE) students were given the opportunity to experience teaching in a FLP. Here we report on the experiences and perceptions of the preparation program from the perspectives of the key stakeholders, including the ITE students, FLP staff, and the young people attending the FLP. All stakeholders perceived the project to be a success in enabling the ITE students to gain valuable theoretical knowledge and practical experience of the FLP context.

This study theoretically aligns with research that purports that nature play positively contributes to sustainability stewardship. Early childhood teachers can plan for and nurture children’s capabilities and dispositions for sustainability stewardship. Initial teacher education programs contribute to the professional learning of preservice early childhood teachers’ perceptions regarding nature play. This article details the findings of content analysis to explore and uncover the existence of nature play in online, publicly available documents representing twenty-two early childhood teacher qualifications. In what ways is nature play evidenced in early childhood initial teacher education programs in Australia? The findings highlight potential discrepancies between the values related to nature play in the early childhood field and the content in initial teacher education programming. The article concludes with implications for teacher education programs and proposed recommendations for ongoing research.

Current curricula, which organize initial teacher education programs, include, among their stated purposes, preparing teachers to help their future students to grow as global, participatory, and ethically engaged citizens. However, we know little about how teacher educators prepare their students to be citizens. This article analyses how a group of teacher educators from a public university in Spain understand citizenship education, exploring the net of metaphors and idealized visions they seem to share, regardless of their formal conceptualizations. The discussion of the findings considers the implicit hierarchies of these shared assumptions that define what is deemed as real, desirable, and possible in citizenship education. Implications for teacher education are also contemplated.

PurposeThe construction of learning scenarios is a way to plan for teaching activities, promoting the development of skills related to problem solving, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity. Using learning scenarios as a lesson planning strategy becomes a powerful tool in initial teacher education. On the one hand, it mobilizes teaching-related scientific concepts, and on the other hand, it offers opportunities to think on innovative pedagogic approaches involving strategies and capacities essential for the future teacher. Research shows that teacher education programs within real school contexts enriched with digital technologies represent an important factor in increasing the quality of teachers’ preparation and their future professional practice. The paper aims to discuss these issues.Design/methodology/approachThe authors present the analysis of practice of design and implementation of learning scenarios in teachers’ initial education courses developed with students of teaching master degrees. Activity theory is used in the analysis of a case study of a student-teacher in Computer Science.FindingsThe results have been analyzed, contributing to the specification of the principles underlying the learning scenarios in initial teacher education.Research limitations/implicationsResults show the affordances and possibilities of using learning scenarios as structuring resources for the initial teacher education practice.Originality/valueTherefore, the use of learning scenarios brings a set of potentialities to teacher training given its prospective nature.

Background Alternative teacher certification has become an increasingly popular strategy for addressing both teacher quality and teacher shortages. However, there is little agreement about what constitutes alternative certification, and there is little known about the types of programs that prepare highly qualified teachers. The debate over alternative certification has fueled a variety of assumptions about participants and programs that are based on opinion or the limited research base. Focus of Study Our research describes in detail seven programs to understand who participates in these programs and what learning opportunities the programs provide. We test proponents’ and opponents’ assumptions about alternative certification against national data and data from the seven programs. Research Design We employed multiple data collection activities at both the program and participant levels. We conducted case studies of seven alternative certification programs, including multiple interviews with key personnel and document reviews. We surveyed program participants twice—once at the beginning of their participation in the program, and again at the end of their first year of teaching. We also observed a sample of participants teaching and interviewed them both at the beginning and end of their first year of teaching. Findings We find that both sides of the debate fail to capture the variation in participants’ characteristics and their experience in the programs. Alternative certification program participants are a diverse group of individuals who defy generalization. In addition, we find a great deal of variation between and within alternative certification programs. In contrast to simplistic characterizations, we find teacher development in alternative certification to be a function of the interaction between the program as implemented, the school context in which participants are placed, and the participants’ backgrounds and previous teaching experiences. Conclusions We conclude by questioning the usefulness of comparing different alternative certification programs and instead suggest that a better unit of analysis would be a subgroup of individuals with similar backgrounds, school placements, and learning opportunities.

This paper discusses the concept of cooperative learning and the role of education of future teachers in the development of their competencies for their implementation in teaching. The aim of this paper is to research the content of relevant literature and to determine whether previous research has sufficiently included an analysis of the competence of teachers and students of teacher education and the role of educational programs in training them to successfully apply ccooperative learning. It was found that, due to the lack of appropriate competencies of teachers for the implementation of this teaching strategy, its application is often neglected. Therefore the development of adequate knowledge, skills and positive beliefs of future teachers about cooperative learning can be considered priorities of their formal education. It was found that so far only a few studies have been conducted on the actual competencies of future teachers for the successful implementation of this teaching strategy, and there is a lack of research on whether teacher education programs adequately support their development. Therefore, this paper concludes on the need to undertake research that will provide a more concrete insight into the current situation and encourage quality and more frequent application of cooperative learning in teaching practice.

This systematic literature review aims to gain a comprehensive understanding of the opportunities thataction research (AR) provides for initial teacher education and the challenges that teacher educators andpre-service teachers (PSTs) may experience during the AR process. We analyzed 20 empirical studies onAR conducted in initial teacher education programs, adopting a hybrid approach to thematic analysis. Thefindings indicate that AR is a promising practice that helps PSTs to reflect critically, (re)construct theirteacher identity, see students as partners, value collaboration, and (re)conceptualize their understanding ofresearch. However, it is also important to consider the challenges faced during the AR process, such aspracticum restrictions, assessment demands, weak communication between partners, and time constraints. Therefore, it is essential to consider AR within initial teacher education as distinct from in-service ARpractices since the needs and concerns of PSTs might be different in this transitional period of theirlives. Implications are included for initial teacher education programs which are planning to use AR as atool for teacher learning and development

This is a formative evaluation study of the "Class-Teacher" pre-service teacher education programme at the University of Jordan. The aim was to identify and evaluate the programme as perceived by the programme's participants. The choice of the topic was inspired by the researcher's perception that there were negative faculty and students' attitudes toward the programme. The programme's evaluation was intended to be responsive to its participants' needs and concerns. It was also planned and implemented within the interpretive paradigm of research. Stake's countenance model of evaluation was used mainly to guide the process of data collection. Both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection including questionnaires, formal and informal interviews and document analysis were used. The fieldwork took place in two different contexts, the university where the theoretical (on-campus) part of the programme has been implemented and the cooperating schools where the student's teaching practice took place. The target groups were student teachers, university faculty members and supervisors, co-operating teachers and headteachers at the co-operating schools. The findings of the study indicate that there is a lack of clarity regarding the objectives of the programme among the majority of its participants. Concerning the programme's curriculum, the findings show that the student teachers welcome the variety of its content. However, the students criticised certain aspects of the programme's content, particularly the professional sequence, of lack of relevance to the school curriculum and therefore to their needs as student teachers. The findings also show that there is a need to increase the weight of the school-based component of the programme since there is a perceived lack of balance in the content. Although there is a perceived lack of communication between The University and the cooperating schools that has an effect on the training process, student teachers seem most satisfied with their school-based training. The final chapter further discusses the above as well as many other main findings, reports the problems raised and posits a set of recommendations intended to resolve the identified problems.

Since English has risen as the dominant language in the world, the demand for English language teachers has grown rapidly especially in the last three decades. Hence, English language teacher education has become an important concern in the Turkish national education system, which has forced the governments to implement a series of reforms. One of these was the Foreign Language Education (FLE) curriculum designed by the Higher Education Council (HEC), forwarded to all FLE departments in Turkish universities to be carried out starting from 1998-99. This curriculum was also used for pre-service English language teacher education in the Department of Foreign Language Education at Middle East Technical University (METU). However, a large scale evaluation study was not conducted on the effectiveness of the program or the competence of its graduates. This study primarily aimed at reaching the FLE graduates from 2002 to 2006 to investigate to what extent they perceive themselves competent as EFL teachers and to what extent they find the FLE program components successful in helping them gain these competencies. Besides, it also intended to reach the employers of FLE graduates to explore how competent these graduates are viewed and how successful METU FLE program is considered in serving its graduates gain teacher competencies. For this aim quantitative and qualitative data were collected through two graduate questionnaires, and graduate and elite employer interviews. The findings of the first graduate questionnaire revealed that the FLE graduates perceived themselves competent in most of HEC&rsquo
s competence areas, while the open-ended questionnaire items and interview data demonstrated a need for improvement for competencies of language knowledge, spoken use of English, classroom management, assessment and instruction. It was also seen in these two types of data that graduates&rsquo
perception of their strengths and weaknesses in HEC&rsquo
s foreign language teacher competencies and their need for developing other competencies depend on the level they teach, the type of school they work at and the length of experience they have. Similarly, some of the employers, according to the institution where they have elite positions, indicated a high level of satisfaction with the FLE graduates&rsquo
competence in language and subject knowledge, inclass and out-of class competencies, while some of them emphasized a need for improvement in competencies of language knowledge and use, and putting theory into practice. In addition, although the program was reported to have a strong and positive role on the development of professional competencies in the teacher candidates, it was also stated that the five components and some courses of the program need revisions in terms of their content, methodology of instruction and assessment. Moreover, the need for communication among the components of the program was also expressed, as the graduates mention unnecessary overlaps among some courses. In the light of these findings, some suggestions are made towards program improvement.

The focus of this study is on the Foundation Phase mathematical and pedagogical knowledge construction. This study is about how two lecturers and a number of final year B.Ed. Foundation Phase student teachers construct Foundation Phase mathematical and pedagogical knowledge during the initial teacher education programme. The initial B.Ed. Foundation Phase teacher education provides student teachers with different mathematical knowledge for teaching. A Foundation Phase mathematics pedagogical knowledge construction framework was utilised to generate and analyse data. The Foundation Phase mathematics pedagogical knowledge construction framework is developed with the assumption that the integrated learning knowledge and the process of pedagogical reasoning action is a continuous process. Furthermore, it is assumed that student teachers’ active participation in their learning and paddling through the pedagogical reasoning action process, leads to the construction of Foundation Phase mathematical pedagogical knowledge. The study utilised a qualitative case study design to investigate how two initial teacher education programmes construct Foundation Phase mathematical pedagogical knowledge in their programme to prepare student teachers to teach Foundation Phase mathematics. Data were collected from Foundation Phase mathematics lecturers through semi-structured interviews, focus group interviews with final year Foundation Phase student teachers as well as document analysis from the institutions to achieve triangulation. Data analysis and findings were based on themes and categories that emerged. The findings suggest that Foundation Phase mathematical and pedagogical knowledge construction is an interconnected and continuous process that includes different types of knowledge and pedagogical reasoning.

Thesis (MEd (Education))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.
This is a qualitative study that explores social cohesion in terms of how it is understood by, teacher educators and pre-service teachers, and how it is incorporated, taught, and experienced in an initial teacher education (ITE) programme that is located within one university in the Western Cape, South Africa. It uses semi-structured interviews, observations, and a focus group interview to understand how teacher educators think about and teach social cohesion. Moreover, it focuses on how fourth year pre-service teachers experience the programme in relation to debates on social cohesion. Findings suggest that teacher educators’ understandings and pre-service teachers’ backgrounds influence their experiences of an ITE programme. It further suggests that pre-service teachers do develop attitudes and pedagogies for social cohesion, all be it unevenly so. This study contributes to better understandings of social cohesion as a priority of South African government, and how it is experienced by pre-service teachers in an ITE programme. In so doing, it contributes to how social cohesion may be realised in post-apartheid South Africa.

This study aimed to provide an evaluation of the Physical Education initial Teacher Training Programme (PEITTP) in the Department of Physical Education at Qatar University in the State of Qatar. The purpose of the study, therefore, was to explore the effectiveness of the programme with a view to improving the way in which the Department prepares physical education teachers. Hence, the type of evaluation adopted in this study was of a formative nature because the objective was to examine a) any possible weaknesses, and see how they could be remedied, and b) possible strengths and focus on how they could be enhanced. To attain the objectives referred to above, the study used two main research instruments: questionnaires and interviews. The reason for this was so that the research data could be cross-checked and triangulated. Therefore, four questionnaire samples were distributed to the following male and female population: 14 lecturers, 14 inspectors, 134 teachers and 31 students in the final year. In addition, questionnaires were also administered to a sample of 2,457 male and female school pupils from elementary, preparatory and secondary levels. Interviews were also utilised with the four groups of lecturers, inspectors, teachers and students. The findings drawn from the study were as follows:1. The results revealed that there was, in general, satisfaction with the University, Faculty and Professional Requirements, which were viewed in the main as effective and important. Regarding University and Faculty Requirements, the lecturers and inspectors were more satisfied with these courses than were the teachers and students. In general, the participants were more satisfied with Professional Requirements which the majority felt should be increased, than with University and Faculty Requirements, which the students believed should be decreased.2. The Professional Courses perceived by the respondents as the most important were: Teaching Practice, Sports Training, Football, and Methods of Teaching PE. The courses viewed as the least important were: Boxing ; Wrestling, Fencing, Introduction to Sociology, and the Principles of Statistics. Also, the participants felt that the Professional Courses contributed appropriately to the preparation of students for the teaching profession. However, the majority of the teachers and inspectors indicated that these courses often dealt with topics that were not relevant to the teaching process. It was also found that there was little diversification in the use of teaching methods and that lecturing was the most widely used method. Moreover, the majority of the teachers and students maintained that they were not given a chance to evaluate any of the Professional Courses and that there were no systematic procedures to evaluate these courses.3. There was general satisfaction with Teaching Skills but respondents called for more emphasis on Teaching Skills by the Physical Education Department (FED).Respondents generally perceived Teaching Practice as effective. However, they requested that more time be devoted to it.4. Respondents generally perceived Teaching Practice as effective. However, they suggested that more time be devoted to it. The respondents, especially the teachers and the students, pointed out that there was a clash between the timing of the Teaching Practice and the university courses and student-teachers were not treated professionally by the school administration during Teaching Practice. Moreover, the respondents pointed out that there was no communication between the PED and schools where the student teachers practised their teaching.5. Overall, the respondents displayed general satisfaction with the available Resources, Staffing & Access, and Structure of the Course. The respondents, especially males, requested that an indoor hall be built in their premises, whereas females requested that a swimming pool be constricted in their section. Also, the lecturers pointed out that there is no induction for the new lecturers to familiarize them with the registration system at Qatar University. In addition, some teachers and students were dissatisfied with the office hours and regarded the time of day allocated to the Practical Professional Courses as unsuitable.6. With regard to the Goals and Objectives of the PE Department, the lecturers seemed very satisfied with the achievement of the objective pertaining to the 'Preparation of PE teachers to work in the various educational levels in Qatar’. However, they were dissatisfied with the achievement of other objectives, such as 'Educational qualification, continuous training and supervision of all those concerned in the education profession in relation to sport and physical education' and 'Preparation of PE specialists scientifically and practically to undertake duties of supervision, administration and training in the sports field in institutions of education and youth'. 7. In general, students and teachers were less satisfied than lecturers and inspectors in their responses to the programme evaluation.8. The teachers and students' interview responses were in the main more positive than the answers they provided in the questionnaires, which is attributed to their culture. 9. Male pupils had generally more favorable attitudes towards the teachers and the PE courses than their female counterparts. Female pupils at preparatory level were the least satisfied group with regard to the teachers and the PE courses.10. With respect to the activities provided for pupils, it was deemed that there was no balance in the number of sessions which each gender received in certain activities. The findings of the study lead to the following primary recommendations: a) more collaborative work between the PED and the Administration of PE in the Ministry of Education is highly recommended in order to facilitate more cohesion between the curricula enforced by government policy in schools and that provided in the university curricula to train teachers. b) the PED must revise and update its curriculum in conjunction with the Ministry of Education. More collaborative work between the PED at Qatar University and the Administration of PE in the Ministry of Education will help facilitate more cohesion between the curricula demands enforced by government policy in schools and that provided in the curricula to train teachers. c) the PED facilities and resources should be improved. d) Regarding Qatari culture, it is recommended that people in charge of PE at Qatar University and the Ministry of Education should make others fully aware of the importance of sports in general and PE in particular by trying to find out ways to breakdown the cultural barriers by which more participation of females in sport and PE would be possible.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the initial teacher education programme which is specifically offered by four Omani colleges of education to prepare "scientific field" female teachers to teach science and mathematics subjects for pupils in Basic Education schools (Grades 1-4), ages of students from (6-10). This evaluation questions the adequacy of this programme to prepare qualified teachers to teach these subjects in a changing school system implementing a reformed Basic Education curriculum and programme. This system tends to transfer the teaching and learning process from the traditional learning environment to one that is a constructivist teaching environment. This study focuses on this programme's defined teaching competencies and to what extent the participants perceived themselves properly trained with respect to these listed competencies in their professional practices. The study also spotlights student teachers' and practicing teachers' attitudes and motivation towards the teaching profession, and towards aspects of science and mathematics teaching in primary schools. The study tried to examine the extent of the constructivist approaches by student teachers and practicing teachers in their science and mathematics lessons. The evaluation framework of the study was designed to conduct the research plan and to achieve its purposes. Several evaluation models were examined and they were critically reviewed. The review concluded that there is no one specific model which can be considered (the most) outstanding in terms of excellence, the selection of the evaluation model depends on factors such as the aim of the study, the nature of the programme, its context, and the targeted population, Thus the study constructed of three stages with findings from conducted evaluation instruments of each stage leading consequently to the next stage. In the first stage both questionnaires and semi-structured interviews are implemented. while observations with a checklist followed by follow-up interviews are conducted to gather information during the second stage. In the third stage, conversational open interviews are proceeded. Although the group focused upon for the study are the first stakeholders (the student teachers and practicing teachers), the research was extended to get information from other participants, educators from different positions, such as curriculum advisors, college lecturers, inspectors, head teachers and senior teachers. The findings from this study indicated that in general, participants' considered of the importance of the some of the listed competencies. Even though there is some consensus of the importance for these competencies, there are some un-ignorable critics who view these competencies as being far away from the goals for the preparation of scientific field teachers for the reformed Basic Education schools, most of the listed competencies are supposed to be the foundations of the programme's components, and thus the colleges of education's courses are far too general. Findings from the questionnaire show that student teachers and practicing teachers amplified their self-rating of competence in the listed competencies because responses from the face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with them found divergence views. These differing views were supported by interviewed teacher educators and principals, and their opinions towards the insufficiency of the graduates of the colleges of education. The study found from the observations of some of the practicing teachers and student teachers observed while teaching science and mathematics lessons, and from the follow-up interviews, that there is very little sign of constructivist teaching approaches used in these lessons. The study proposes recommendations which can improve and strengthen the preparation of cycle one scientific field teachers at the pre-service level and to future in-service so that teachers might better meet the range of work and responsibilities they are facing in the reformed Basic Education schools. Finally, it recommends areas for further research.

This study is concerned with the development of subject knowledge in pre-service teachers of secondary physical education (PE) during their one year Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) course. It investigates the knowledge bases for teaching which pre-service teachers recognised, developed and prioritised, as well as the key influences that impacted on their subject knowledge development. Adopting an interpretive methodology informed by constructivist grounded theory, the study employed interviews, lesson observations and post-lesson reflections as principal research methods. Pre-service teachers were seen to make wide-ranging progress in their subject knowledge, including the development of content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, general pedagogical knowledge, knowledge of curriculum and knowledge of pupils. Through this they advanced their view of the nature of PE and how they wanted to teach it. The research highlights, that the process of knowledge development in PETE is socially constructed and complex. Much of the pre-service teachers development was influenced by various communities of practice, particularly their school placements PE departments, but also their University-based learning community. Of these, the legitimised practices within the PE departments were found to be especially important to pre-service teachers development. University-based learning was credited by pre-service teachers with enhancing their holistic understanding of the learning process, developing those aspects of critical pedagogy that were under-developed in schools. The impact of different subject knowledge profiles and the consequences of knowledge deficits are identified. This raises questions about the role and development of subject knowledge within PETE and calls for a re-vitalised debate on the nature of the knowledge in PE. Framed within an ever-changing policy landscape is the need for enhanced and stable partnerships that promote shared visions of PETE, an essential part of which is the need to collaboratively design and evaluate explicit knowledge development pathways which allow pre-service teachers to fulfil their potential and genuinely decide how they want to teach PE.

Abstract Singapore introduced the Teacher Education Model for the 21st Century (TE21) in 2009 as a framework to propose a set of 21st century competencies that Singaporean teachers should be equipped with. The introduction of TE21 catalyzed the reform of existing programs and the implementation of new initiatives in initial teacher preparation programs and lifelong teacher professional development. This chapter first examines the local and international driving forces that led to the conceptualization of TE21 since Singapore’s independence. Then, the recommendations of TE21 are scrutinized along with the implementation of two new initiatives in the initial teacher preparation program. The findings are twofold. First, we find that Singapore has extensively performed a comparative review of global 21st century recommendations over four decades to customize an education system for their local context. Second, by synthesizing information sourced from interviews, government documents, and quantitative data, we find that the progress towards developing a cadre of 21st century teachers and producing holistic students in Singapore is largely successful. However, students are found to be at the receiving end of a generational cultural clash between them and their parents’ beliefs about the core of education.

The development of literacy competencies among second-level school students has been highlighted, by the Programme for International Student Assessment as ‘vital to succeed in society’. Literacy competency development has become the remit of all teachers, in all disciplines and initial teacher education programmes have a responsibility to address this. This paper aims to explore the provisions made within one Irish Initial Teacher Education programme, for the development of teaching strategies to enable literacy competency development within the technical-subject classrooms at second level. It also explores the perspectives of its pre-service teachers on this topic. A mixed method case-study was conducted, collecting data through questionnaires, dialogic-discussion groups, focus-groups and interviews. A key finding was the challenge in defining ‘literacy’. This ambiguity left pre-service teachers and teacher-educators unsure of expectations in this regard and resulted in a missalignment between the theory being taught and pre-service teacher practice. Technical-subjects are unexpectedly rich in opportunities to develop literacy competency. However, only some pre-service teachers were recognising the potential for literacy development within these subjects. Further training is required to address the challenges highlighted in this paper and to equip pre-service teachers with the appropriate tools to meet the literacy demands of today’s technical-subject students.

The Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), Ireland, is a Higher Education (HE) provider of Initial Teacher Education (ITE).Graduates on its BSc (Hons) in Education (Design, Graphics and Construction) degree programme are qualified to teach technical subjects at second level. A defining element of delivery is the promotion of creativity and innovation in the classroom, by means of active, student-centred and design-led teaching and learning (T&L) strategies. This paper outlines a GMIT qualitative student-perspective pilot study, involving a total of 42 GMIT student teacher participants (n=42). The study aims to analyse the effectiveness of two selected platforms in the ITE programme: 1) presentation contributions by 14 student teachers at the GMIT ‘Creativity and Innovation in Teaching’ Conference (2016) (n=14), and 2) a textual analysis of student online forum critical reflection submissions (2016-2017) (n=28). The research confirms the effectiveness of both strategies in promoting a practice of innovation and creativity in the classroom, including evidence of the innovative educational technology classroom tools and increased student-centred, active learning and design-led strategies in T&L. Teacher education program differs internationally in accordance with the admission, assessment, teaching practice period, induction program, professional learning, initial teacher learning, continuous professional development, and performance appraisal systems for recognizing accredited teaching. Experts in teacher education recommends that the practicum is the focus and an integral part of initial teacher education program. In most countries, teacher education programs face difficulties in finding the proper role and form of practice. Referring to National Education Strategic Plan (2016-21) of Myanmar, practicum in teacher preparation program is dull and it has limited guidance and supervision. Moreover, very few publications are available in Myanmar that label the perceptions of teacher candidate on their practicum experience. This study explores student-teachers' experience during practicum in their pre-service teacher education program. The doctoral research will focus on the role of practicum in pre-service teacher education in Myanmar. This document describes the results of the pilot study conducted in 2019, July. The researcher employed convergent mixed-method design to collect data for the pilot study. Data collection methods include semi-structured focus group interviews and questionnaires. The final year student-teachers (N=23) who were enrolled in 2014 academic year at the Yangon University of Education are the subject of the study. The questionnaire consists of 27 closed items. Fourteen final-year student-teachers discussed their practicum experiences in two focus group interviews. Student-teachers' responses to the questionnaire are mostly positive. In the focus group interview, they mentioned their critical point of views such as their university program could prepare them to some extent for their practicum. There were some differences in responses to the questionnaire and focus group interviews. From the results of the quantitative and qualitative part, the researcher could learn some potential problem areas that can affect the whole doctoral research.

Traditional teacher education focused on crisis teaching, crisis prevention and crisis management at the internal and external level changes require education to react to factors and contexts at meso and macro level. The aim of the research was to determine whether the learning outcomes of initial teacher education that prepare future teachers to deal with crises at meso level and macro level can be identified. Also, research aimed to identified learning outcomes with respect to the type of crisis they address and the level of revised Bloom’s taxonomy (Anderson & Kratwohl, 2001). Content analysis of initial teacher education curriculums on a national sample of the Republic of Croatia was conducted. Curricular content analysis identified learning outcomes in a broad field of society, education, ecology, technology, but there are no learning outcomes related to economy. Most learning outcomes in the area of crises in society were at the level of evaluation (27,3%), as well as the learning outcomes in the area of crisis in education (34%). Since there is no national standard for teacher education, significant differences were found in the scope and number of learning outcomes according to the year of study as well as the university. Given the results of this research, it is necessary to revise initial teacher education curriculums and develop lifelong learning programs that would provide future teachers with the development of competencies necessary to act in various situations of crisis.

"The purpose of the paper is to argue for the need to reconfigure the training of Bachelor of Education Degree student teachers as a strategy to empower them in dealing with the changed reality in secondary schools. The purpose is achieved by looking at the relevancy of the education or training offered to undergraduate teacher trainee students at universities in Eastern Cape Province of South Africa regarding learner behavioural problems being experienced in secondary schools. The paper was guided by a situated learning theory. The paper adopted a qualitative approach and a case study design. The study purposively selected 3 universities, 9 lecturers and 15 teacher trainees as participants. Data were collected through use of interviews and focus group discussions. Thematic frames were used to analyse data that were discussed concurrently with the findings. The study established a mismatch between how the teachers’ training and actual reality in schools as a challenge that needs to be addressed. The implication drawn is that failure to move with speed to reconfigure the training of initial teacher education increases frustration and tension between teachers and learners. The paper concludes that the current way of training of teachers lacks reality of how teacher trainees should deal with learner behavioural problems in schools. Universities should redesign an initial teacher education programme that capacitates teacher trainees to handle and speak to the current generation of secondary school learners."

The COVID-19 pandemic forced a rapid transition from onsite to online learning spaces for initial teacher education (ITE); with Universities even adopting new modes of pedagogy and assessment. This study explores: (1) how Maltese ITE undergraduate early years and postgraduate primary education students dealt with more remote forms of learning during the pandemic in Malta, and (2) the teaching/lecturing modes used, by lecturers, for remote learning, assessment and concerns that tie-in with broader student wellbeing. The data were gathered through an online quantitative survey designed to collect information about ITE students’ views. Student responses strongly suggest that in the eventuality of an ongoing vaccination ‘post-COVID’ era, ITE within HE programmes should consider revisiting the course content and delivery, supporting and fostering, blended and online approaches. A ‘blind spot’ reflecting the struggle for independence, autonomy, and control during COVID-19 in a postcolonial Maltese Higher Eduction context also emerged. The insights gained highlight how ITE students’ views on their experiences of online pedagogy, assessment, and how these new modes impacted their wellbeing within a Maltese HE context can serve to inform policy and practice. These results emphasize the need to promote participatory research amongst university students as key to inform HE policy and practice. "Current reforms in education have emphasized shifting learning environments from a traditional replicative framework to be much more aligned to knowledge generation environments. These environments are focused on promoting student engagement with the epistemic practices of the discipline, which are the argumentative practices used to generate disciplinary knowledge. Helping teachers to shift from their more traditional pedagogical approaches requires professional development programs that enable them to not only experience learning within a generative environment but to also engage with the theoretical underpinning of such environments. To better understand the complexity involved in helping promote teacher change, the researchers implemented a professional development program that focused on asking teachers to examine their orientation to learning and how this influenced their pedagogical approaches. The knowledge generation approach, Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach, was the focus of the professional development as the work was centered on improving science teaching and learning. The professional development program focused on examining cognitive learning theory, the use of epistemic tools of argument, language and dialogue, the development of pedagogical approaches and development of teaching units that aligned with school curricula. The K-5 teachers were drawn from two states and were involved in 10 days of professional development – 6 during the summer and 4 during the academic year. To study teacher transition to these environments the researchers developed three new survey instruments focus on epistemic tools that are utilized in these environments: argument, dialogue and language. The teachers also completed an epistemic orientation for generative environments survey. Teachers completed these survey instruments every six months across the three years of the project. This presentation focuses on the first year of participation in the project as this represents the critical transition time for teachers in moving to implement the SWH approach within their classrooms. Using Latent Transition Analysis the 95 participating teachers were classified into three initial profiles. During the first six months there were transitions from both low to medium, and medium to high implementation. However, the reasons for the transitions were different. Low to medium transition was around improvements in orientation and dialogue, while for medium to high the transition was around understanding argument. The transitions during the second six months shifted to be centered much more on orientation, than epistemic tools. Once teachers transition to a new profile, they remain at that level or potentially move to the highest profile."

Many studies emphasize the importance of students’ social skills, but the question is how everyday school practice affects the development of these skills. Socio-emotional skills, according to other authors, relate to the abilities by which a person regulates and manages his own thoughts, emotions and behavior, sets and achieves positive goals, how he experiences himself and respects the perspective of others, establishes and maintains positive social relationships and makes responsible decisions. In this paper, we point out the different components of teacher roles and their approaches that can influence the development of these skills. The results of various research show that changes in the sense of teaching the teachers their social skills, especially in initial education, but also later, increase the awareness of students’ social skills. Empirical findings indicate the key characteristics of successful socio-emotional skills development programs, emphasizing the necessary specific training and coaching of teachers as part of their initial education and professional development, as well as the need for systematic support during the implementation of programs that affect development of these skills in students. The importance of understanding emotions and social skills in students by teachers is emphasized, as well as the development of teachers’ awareness of ways that can influence the development of socio-emotional skills, how to create a positive atmosphere in the classroom and how to adequately respond to different emotions.

An impactful teacher education programme equips teachers with knowledge and skills to improve their effectiveness. Empirical findings on the effectiveness of teacher preparation programmes show that the accountability of institutions and teachers should not only be based on the knowledge or skills produced but also on student learning. Our study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a pre-service teacher education programme in Indonesia, known as Pendidikan Profesi Guru Prajabatan or PPG. PPG is a one-year full-time programme in addition to four years of undergraduate teacher education (Bachelor of Education). PPG graduate teachers pass a selection process and receive a teaching certificate upon completion of the programme. We use mixed methods to understand the differences in the outcome of PPG graduates majoring in primary school teacher education to their counterparts who did not attend PPG. To estimate the impact of PPG, we exploit the combination of rules and events in the selection process which allows us to estimate the impact of PPG on teacher performance using fuzzy regression discontinuity design (RDD). Once we attest to the validity of the fuzzy RDD, we find that PPG has no impact on a teacher’s professional knowledge and student outcomes in numeracy and literacy. We argue that this is due to the ineffective selection mechanism in distinguishing the PPG and the comparison group. We conclude that as an initial teacher training programme, PPG did not improve teacher effectiveness. Despite incorporating best practices from effective teacher training into the programme design, PPG does not appear capable of producing a higher-quality teacher.

Review question / Objective: The purpose of this systematic review is to scrutinize what is known about pre-service teachers’ epistemological beliefs in initial teacher training. The research questions which guided the review of these studies were: (Q1) What is the theoretical framework used? (Q2) What is the domain present in the research? (Q3) What have been the main purposes of the research? (Q4) Which have been the methodological procedures used to access epistemological beliefs? (Q5) What are the main research findings? Information sources: Five databases will be used to search and retrieve the articles: EBSCO, ERIC, Web of Science and SCOPUS. This review will not exclude any work based on the date of conclusion as it intends to understand and illustrate the overview of all the research carried out on the epistemological beliefs of pre-service teachers. This will allow access to the explanatory factors of the contours and manifestations that the EB assume in this training phase.

Public interest, research and policies about dual language education and the multiple benefits of bilingualism and biliteracy have led to shortages of bilingual education teachers in the state and nation. School districts and educator preparation programs are actively looking for pathways of bilingual teacher preparation to meet local demands for more dual language programs. Modeled after medical residencies, teacher residencies are deeply rooted in clinical training, typically placing residents in classrooms with experienced teachers in high-needs schools where they are supported in their development. Teacher residencies allow for the recruitment of teachers, offer strong clinical preparation, connect new teachers to mentors and provide financial incentives to retain teachers in the school/district of residency. Little is known however, about bilingual teacher residencies in the state. Following a review of various data sources, researchers find that, to date, there are few bilingual teacher residencies offered and that there is a need to expand and study bilingual teacher residencies as one of the most viable pathways to respond to this shortage.
