This is a formative evaluation study of the "Class-Teacher" pre-service teacher education programme at the University of Jordan. The aim was to identify and evaluate the programme as perceived by the programme's participants. The choice of the topic was inspired by the researcher's perception that there were negative faculty and students' attitudes toward the programme. The programme's evaluation was intended to be responsive to its participants' needs and concerns. It was also planned and implemented within the interpretive paradigm of research. Stake's countenance model of evaluation was used mainly to guide the process of data collection. Both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection including questionnaires, formal and informal interviews and document analysis were used. The fieldwork took place in two different contexts, the university where the theoretical (on-campus) part of the programme has been implemented and the cooperating schools where the student's teaching practice took place. The target groups were student teachers, university faculty members and supervisors, co-operating teachers and headteachers at the co-operating schools. The findings of the study indicate that there is a lack of clarity regarding the objectives of the programme among the majority of its participants. Concerning the programme's curriculum, the findings show that the student teachers welcome the variety of its content. However, the students criticised certain aspects of the programme's content, particularly the professional sequence, of lack of relevance to the school curriculum and therefore to their needs as student teachers. The findings also show that there is a need to increase the weight of the school-based component of the programme since there is a perceived lack of balance in the content. Although there is a perceived lack of communication between The University and the cooperating schools that has an effect on the training process, student teachers seem most satisfied with their school-based training. The final chapter further discusses the above as well as many other main findings, reports the problems raised and posits a set of recommendations intended to resolve the identified problems.

Since English has risen as the dominant language in the world, the demand for English language teachers has grown rapidly especially in the last three decades. Hence, English language teacher education has become an important concern in the Turkish national education system, which has forced the governments to implement a series of reforms. One of these was the Foreign Language Education (FLE) curriculum designed by the Higher Education Council (HEC), forwarded to all FLE departments in Turkish universities to be carried out starting from 1998-99. This curriculum was also used for pre-service English language teacher education in the Department of Foreign Language Education at Middle East Technical University (METU). However, a large scale evaluation study was not conducted on the effectiveness of the program or the competence of its graduates. This study primarily aimed at reaching the FLE graduates from 2002 to 2006 to investigate to what extent they perceive themselves competent as EFL teachers and to what extent they find the FLE program components successful in helping them gain these competencies. Besides, it also intended to reach the employers of FLE graduates to explore how competent these graduates are viewed and how successful METU FLE program is considered in serving its graduates gain teacher competencies. For this aim quantitative and qualitative data were collected through two graduate questionnaires, and graduate and elite employer interviews. The findings of the first graduate questionnaire revealed that the FLE graduates perceived themselves competent in most of HEC&rsquo
s competence areas, while the open-ended questionnaire items and interview data demonstrated a need for improvement for competencies of language knowledge, spoken use of English, classroom management, assessment and instruction. It was also seen in these two types of data that graduates&rsquo
perception of their strengths and weaknesses in HEC&rsquo
s foreign language teacher competencies and their need for developing other competencies depend on the level they teach, the type of school they work at and the length of experience they have. Similarly, some of the employers, according to the institution where they have elite positions, indicated a high level of satisfaction with the FLE graduates&rsquo
competence in language and subject knowledge, inclass and out-of class competencies, while some of them emphasized a need for improvement in competencies of language knowledge and use, and putting theory into practice. In addition, although the program was reported to have a strong and positive role on the development of professional competencies in the teacher candidates, it was also stated that the five components and some courses of the program need revisions in terms of their content, methodology of instruction and assessment. Moreover, the need for communication among the components of the program was also expressed, as the graduates mention unnecessary overlaps among some courses. In the light of these findings, some suggestions are made towards program improvement.

The focus of this study is on the Foundation Phase mathematical and pedagogical knowledge construction. This study is about how two lecturers and a number of final year B.Ed. Foundation Phase student teachers construct Foundation Phase mathematical and pedagogical knowledge during the initial teacher education programme. The initial B.Ed. Foundation Phase teacher education provides student teachers with different mathematical knowledge for teaching. A Foundation Phase mathematics pedagogical knowledge construction framework was utilised to generate and analyse data. The Foundation Phase mathematics pedagogical knowledge construction framework is developed with the assumption that the integrated learning knowledge and the process of pedagogical reasoning action is a continuous process. Furthermore, it is assumed that student teachers’ active participation in their learning and paddling through the pedagogical reasoning action process, leads to the construction of Foundation Phase mathematical pedagogical knowledge. The study utilised a qualitative case study design to investigate how two initial teacher education programmes construct Foundation Phase mathematical pedagogical knowledge in their programme to prepare student teachers to teach Foundation Phase mathematics. Data were collected from Foundation Phase mathematics lecturers through semi-structured interviews, focus group interviews with final year Foundation Phase student teachers as well as document analysis from the institutions to achieve triangulation. Data analysis and findings were based on themes and categories that emerged. The findings suggest that Foundation Phase mathematical and pedagogical knowledge construction is an interconnected and continuous process that includes different types of knowledge and pedagogical reasoning.

Thesis (MEd (Education))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.
This is a qualitative study that explores social cohesion in terms of how it is understood by, teacher educators and pre-service teachers, and how it is incorporated, taught, and experienced in an initial teacher education (ITE) programme that is located within one university in the Western Cape, South Africa. It uses semi-structured interviews, observations, and a focus group interview to understand how teacher educators think about and teach social cohesion. Moreover, it focuses on how fourth year pre-service teachers experience the programme in relation to debates on social cohesion. Findings suggest that teacher educators’ understandings and pre-service teachers’ backgrounds influence their experiences of an ITE programme. It further suggests that pre-service teachers do develop attitudes and pedagogies for social cohesion, all be it unevenly so. This study contributes to better understandings of social cohesion as a priority of South African government, and how it is experienced by pre-service teachers in an ITE programme. In so doing, it contributes to how social cohesion may be realised in post-apartheid South Africa.

This study aimed to provide an evaluation of the Physical Education initial Teacher Training Programme (PEITTP) in the Department of Physical Education at Qatar University in the State of Qatar. The purpose of the study, therefore, was to explore the effectiveness of the programme with a view to improving the way in which the Department prepares physical education teachers. Hence, the type of evaluation adopted in this study was of a formative nature because the objective was to examine a) any possible weaknesses, and see how they could be remedied, and b) possible strengths and focus on how they could be enhanced. To attain the objectives referred to above, the study used two main research instruments: questionnaires and interviews. The reason for this was so that the research data could be cross-checked and triangulated. Therefore, four questionnaire samples were distributed to the following male and female population: 14 lecturers, 14 inspectors, 134 teachers and 31 students in the final year. In addition, questionnaires were also administered to a sample of 2,457 male and female school pupils from elementary, preparatory and secondary levels. Interviews were also utilised with the four groups of lecturers, inspectors, teachers and students. The findings drawn from the study were as follows:1. The results revealed that there was, in general, satisfaction with the University, Faculty and Professional Requirements, which were viewed in the main as effective and important. Regarding University and Faculty Requirements, the lecturers and inspectors were more satisfied with these courses than were the teachers and students. In general, the participants were more satisfied with Professional Requirements which the majority felt should be increased, than with University and Faculty Requirements, which the students believed should be decreased.2. The Professional Courses perceived by the respondents as the most important were: Teaching Practice, Sports Training, Football, and Methods of Teaching PE. The courses viewed as the least important were: Boxing ; Wrestling, Fencing, Introduction to Sociology, and the Principles of Statistics. Also, the participants felt that the Professional Courses contributed appropriately to the preparation of students for the teaching profession. However, the majority of the teachers and inspectors indicated that these courses often dealt with topics that were not relevant to the teaching process. It was also found that there was little diversification in the use of teaching methods and that lecturing was the most widely used method. Moreover, the majority of the teachers and students maintained that they were not given a chance to evaluate any of the Professional Courses and that there were no systematic procedures to evaluate these courses.3. There was general satisfaction with Teaching Skills but respondents called for more emphasis on Teaching Skills by the Physical Education Department (FED).Respondents generally perceived Teaching Practice as effective. However, they requested that more time be devoted to it.4. Respondents generally perceived Teaching Practice as effective. However, they suggested that more time be devoted to it. The respondents, especially the teachers and the students, pointed out that there was a clash between the timing of the Teaching Practice and the university courses and student-teachers were not treated professionally by the school administration during Teaching Practice. Moreover, the respondents pointed out that there was no communication between the PED and schools where the student teachers practised their teaching.5. Overall, the respondents displayed general satisfaction with the available Resources, Staffing & Access, and Structure of the Course. The respondents, especially males, requested that an indoor hall be built in their premises, whereas females requested that a swimming pool be constricted in their section. Also, the lecturers pointed out that there is no induction for the new lecturers to familiarize them with the registration system at Qatar University. In addition, some teachers and students were dissatisfied with the office hours and regarded the time of day allocated to the Practical Professional Courses as unsuitable.6. With regard to the Goals and Objectives of the PE Department, the lecturers seemed very satisfied with the achievement of the objective pertaining to the 'Preparation of PE teachers to work in the various educational levels in Qatar’. However, they were dissatisfied with the achievement of other objectives, such as 'Educational qualification, continuous training and supervision of all those concerned in the education profession in relation to sport and physical education' and 'Preparation of PE specialists scientifically and practically to undertake duties of supervision, administration and training in the sports field in institutions of education and youth'. 7. In general, students and teachers were less satisfied than lecturers and inspectors in their responses to the programme evaluation.8. The teachers and students' interview responses were in the main more positive than the answers they provided in the questionnaires, which is attributed to their culture. 9. Male pupils had generally more favorable attitudes towards the teachers and the PE courses than their female counterparts. Female pupils at preparatory level were the least satisfied group with regard to the teachers and the PE courses.10. With respect to the activities provided for pupils, it was deemed that there was no balance in the number of sessions which each gender received in certain activities. The findings of the study lead to the following primary recommendations: a) more collaborative work between the PED and the Administration of PE in the Ministry of Education is highly recommended in order to facilitate more cohesion between the curricula enforced by government policy in schools and that provided in the university curricula to train teachers. b) the PED must revise and update its curriculum in conjunction with the Ministry of Education. More collaborative work between the PED at Qatar University and the Administration of PE in the Ministry of Education will help facilitate more cohesion between the curricula demands enforced by government policy in schools and that provided in the curricula to train teachers. c) the PED facilities and resources should be improved. d) Regarding Qatari culture, it is recommended that people in charge of PE at Qatar University and the Ministry of Education should make others fully aware of the importance of sports in general and PE in particular by trying to find out ways to breakdown the cultural barriers by which more participation of females in sport and PE would be possible.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the initial teacher education programme which is specifically offered by four Omani colleges of education to prepare "scientific field" female teachers to teach science and mathematics subjects for pupils in Basic Education schools (Grades 1-4), ages of students from (6-10). This evaluation questions the adequacy of this programme to prepare qualified teachers to teach these subjects in a changing school system implementing a reformed Basic Education curriculum and programme. This system tends to transfer the teaching and learning process from the traditional learning environment to one that is a constructivist teaching environment. This study focuses on this programme's defined teaching competencies and to what extent the participants perceived themselves properly trained with respect to these listed competencies in their professional practices. The study also spotlights student teachers' and practicing teachers' attitudes and motivation towards the teaching profession, and towards aspects of science and mathematics teaching in primary schools. The study tried to examine the extent of the constructivist approaches by student teachers and practicing teachers in their science and mathematics lessons. The evaluation framework of the study was designed to conduct the research plan and to achieve its purposes. Several evaluation models were examined and they were critically reviewed. The review concluded that there is no one specific model which can be considered (the most) outstanding in terms of excellence, the selection of the evaluation model depends on factors such as the aim of the study, the nature of the programme, its context, and the targeted population, Thus the study constructed of three stages with findings from conducted evaluation instruments of each stage leading consequently to the next stage. In the first stage both questionnaires and semi-structured interviews are implemented. while observations with a checklist followed by follow-up interviews are conducted to gather information during the second stage. In the third stage, conversational open interviews are proceeded. Although the group focused upon for the study are the first stakeholders (the student teachers and practicing teachers), the research was extended to get information from other participants, educators from different positions, such as curriculum advisors, college lecturers, inspectors, head teachers and senior teachers. The findings from this study indicated that in general, participants' considered of the importance of the some of the listed competencies. Even though there is some consensus of the importance for these competencies, there are some un-ignorable critics who view these competencies as being far away from the goals for the preparation of scientific field teachers for the reformed Basic Education schools, most of the listed competencies are supposed to be the foundations of the programme's components, and thus the colleges of education's courses are far too general. Findings from the questionnaire show that student teachers and practicing teachers amplified their self-rating of competence in the listed competencies because responses from the face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with them found divergence views. These differing views were supported by interviewed teacher educators and principals, and their opinions towards the insufficiency of the graduates of the colleges of education. The study found from the observations of some of the practicing teachers and student teachers observed while teaching science and mathematics lessons, and from the follow-up interviews, that there is very little sign of constructivist teaching approaches used in these lessons. The study proposes recommendations which can improve and strengthen the preparation of cycle one scientific field teachers at the pre-service level and to future in-service so that teachers might better meet the range of work and responsibilities they are facing in the reformed Basic Education schools. Finally, it recommends areas for further research.

This study is concerned with the development of subject knowledge in pre-service teachers of secondary physical education (PE) during their one year Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) course. It investigates the knowledge bases for teaching which pre-service teachers recognised, developed and prioritised, as well as the key influences that impacted on their subject knowledge development. Adopting an interpretive methodology informed by constructivist grounded theory, the study employed interviews, lesson observations and post-lesson reflections as principal research methods. Pre-service teachers were seen to make wide-ranging progress in their subject knowledge, including the development of content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, general pedagogical knowledge, knowledge of curriculum and knowledge of pupils. Through this they advanced their view of the nature of PE and how they wanted to teach it. The research highlights, that the process of knowledge development in PETE is socially constructed and complex. Much of the pre-service teachers development was influenced by various communities of practice, particularly their school placements PE departments, but also their University-based learning community. Of these, the legitimised practices within the PE departments were found to be especially important to pre-service teachers development. University-based learning was credited by pre-service teachers with enhancing their holistic understanding of the learning process, developing those aspects of critical pedagogy that were under-developed in schools. The impact of different subject knowledge profiles and the consequences of knowledge deficits are identified. This raises questions about the role and development of subject knowledge within PETE and calls for a re-vitalised debate on the nature of the knowledge in PE. Framed within an ever-changing policy landscape is the need for enhanced and stable partnerships that promote shared visions of PETE, an essential part of which is the need to collaboratively design and evaluate explicit knowledge development pathways which allow pre-service teachers to fulfil their potential and genuinely decide how they want to teach PE.

Teacher educators worldwide are seeking ways to develop stronger links with schools, to improve the quality of initial teacher preparation. In this study the researcher investigated a residency approach to initial teacher education (ITE) in a one-year Graduate Diploma of Education course designed to prepare primary school teachers at a university in Western Australia. A mixed methods inquiry approach was employed to examine the nature and quality of the professional learning experiences of the pre-service teacher participants. The Teacher Residency Program (TRP) was based on a medical residency model, with residents given a semester-length placement in two schools. Each placement provided a continuous two-day per week placement and concluded with a five-week fulltime block teaching experience. University course work complemented the in-school practical experience during each of the placement periods. The researcher used concurrent nested research design with quantitative data embedded in the qualitative data to explore the professional learning of the residents; Specifically, the researcher sought evidence of perspective transformation in the residents’ learning process, and a determination of how particular elements of the TRP supported or hindered residents’ professional development. The findings indicate that the residents perceived their professional learning as one of continuous growth. The data confirm that the TRP provided a professionally oriented study of teaching that provided time and opportunity for cumulative learning from both course work and practical teaching. Through the lens of a transformative learning paradigm, the study found that individual development in the TRP varies considerably. Further the residents experienced perspective transformation relating to a range of aspects about learning to teach. The process of transforming perspectives about teaching and learning was multidimensional, individualistic and contextually dependent. Elements of the TRP that assisted residents’ professional development were the concurrent university course work integrated with extended clinical school placement; the opportunities for continuous two-day per week school placement; the block practicum and the two different school placement learning experiences. Aspects that appeared to hinder residents’ professional development were related to the quantity and quality of the university course work offered; the discrepancies that the residents experienced between what they studied about teaching and what they experienced in schools; differences between mentor teachers, and the length of the course. The findings of this study have implications relevant to other ITE programs for improving the learning outcomes of pre-service teachers.

Following the entry of Cyprus into the European Union in 2004 and based on the philosophy which underpins the language policy in Europe, the island has been investing heavily in early foreign language learning. However, despite improvements in English language learning in primary state schools, no significant changes have been evident as regards the preparation of English teachers at this level. In conducting this research, my primary intention was to offer prospective and practising primary teachers a “voice” to express their own views regarding the content and teaching approach of a potential ELT module within teacher education curricula. The research adopted a mixed-method sequential approach carried out in two phases between March and July 2010. Data were initially obtained from 296 in-service primary teachers and 124 student teachers through a questionnaire-based survey. Data obtained in the second phase through individual and focus group interviews with 9 in-service-teachers and 11 student teachers respectively were used to explain, interpret and further examine the findings of the survey. The findings have highlighted the importance of theory and practice, showing evidence that both are necessary in order to avoid fragmented language teaching. The study suggests, therefore, that providing student teachers with meaningful opportunities to form links between the taught theory and its practical application is a fundamental basis for a more holistic teacher approach to teacher education. This study has also provided evidence that participants view learning as a process embedded in a social context, within which knowledge is constructed through collaborative, awareness-raising tasks set by mentors whose mediating roles in the creation of desirable learning contexts is perceived to be crucial. Although the findings of this research directly concern the Cypriot situation, they are likely to have broader applicability beyond Cyprus, especially in countries where early foreign language learning forms part of their educational agenda. Developing primary teachers’ language teaching knowledge and skills while considering the various types of support they receive during their pre-service education form part of a wider endeavour to ensure quality in early foreign language learning, an objective set by the European Union.

This research discusses the issue of education reform in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) through an exploration of the perspectives of a range of participants involved in the preparation programme for science teachers which is run through an existing relationship between the University of Taibah and public schools in Medina city in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The research examines the perspectives of participants in the university and the school (university supervisors, university coordinators, headteachers, collaborating teachers and science student teachers). It discusses teacher preparation issues in the multiple contexts reported in the literature. Teacher preparation in other contexts has revealed models which could be useful in the Saudi context. Activity Theory (AT) was used as the theoretical framework to achieve this study’s objective of exploring the academic systems of the university/school and the relationship between them in science teacher preparation, focussing on the contradictions that create conflicts for student teachers learning to teach the modern science curriculum. Activity Theory was a useful tool in organizing this research as it permitted the exploration of the relationships between systems, analysing the rich data collected on the relationship between university and school. Activity Theory acted as a link between the need for a more expansive unit of analysis in initial teacher education (ITE) studies and appropriate and effective research methods. This research is situated within the interpretative paradigm. It usescase study with mixed methods as an appropriate methodology, using multiple methods of data collection, namely semi-structured interviews as the main tool, questionnaires and documentary evidence. This research revealed the utilitarian nature of the relationship between the university and the school, which did not reach the level of a cooperative partnership, and which contained many contradictions that created conflicts for science teachers when learning the teaching skills required of modern science curricula.

There has been very little research on the effects of initial teacher education in English language teaching (ELT), especially in the context of short intensive pre-service courses. Even more scarce has been any published evaluation of material aimed at helping teachers in such contexts. This essay aims to begin to fill that gap by drawing on the author’s experience to describe and analyze the processes that led to the design and subsequent evaluation of materials aimed at such a learning context. In so doing, it develops and applies a methodology for post-use evaluation of materials and sets out opportunities for further research. The teacher education materials referred to are submitted with the essay, along with a published evaluation of one of those books, and other related publications. This essay contextualizes pre-publication evaluation procedures within the need to ensure that teacher education material is based on theoretically justifiable foundations. To that end, it briefly reviews trends in ELT teacher education and outlines the need for evidence based decisions on content before describing and commenting on pre-publication evaluation processes. The essay sets out the methodological decisions made when carrying out one published post-use evaluation before summarizing the findings and discussion of that study. It then sets out alternative post-use evaluation procedures and goes on to suggest principled criteria by which initial teacher education material can be effectively evaluated. The essay concludes by setting out two types of contribution to knowledge made by the total submission. One contribution is based on substantive findings from research. This includes the insight that early-career teachers value and benefit from discussing teaching with teachers of a similar status. Also, prospective teachers use teacher education material selectively and they value instruction in core competencies. In addition, it was found that the emotional aspects of socializing into the profession are often over-looked in initial teacher education. The second contribution to knowledge is procedural in nature. It seems axiomatic that, as part of a thorough quality control process, material should be evaluated after it has been used and this submission is based on a description, analysis and further development of a rigorous, post-use, public evaluation of teacher education material. As far as I know, this was the first systematic evaluation of teacher education material to be published that tried to gauge the impacts of specific material on users.

This is a study of two cultures in a School of Education where, since 1998, PE students and primary students have taken a generic Education course that comprises one third of their study programme. PE students have been perceived to be a problem for the people responsible for running the Education course because their behaviour and attitudes have not matched the expectations of the staff. Drawing on Goffman's metaphor of theatre, and on Becker's analysis of the collectively held perspectives of medical students, this study examines the hidden curriculum of the academic front stage and students' activities back stage and off stage. The study uses an ethnographic approach using multiple methods and direct and prolonged observation of front stage, back stage and off stage settings. Three aspects of the hidden curriculum are identified, tensions between the Education courses and the ITE programmes, assessment and timetabling. The hidden curriculum supports and defines students' beliefs and defines the two student cultures. For PE students the effect was to marginalise the Education courses and promote 'mainstream' PE courses. For primary students this effect was absent. The front stage supports the development of two separate cultures and on the back stage there is an influential PE culture supported by a 'family system' that links the four year groups. Backstage is an arena for the acquisition of social capital and the deliberate construction of sociability through bonding activities and it is here that PE students are socialised into the norms and values of the group. Primary students did not appear to have an identifiable group culture, either on campus or off campus. Despite the different socialisation experiences, both groups of first year students successfully accomplished placement and had relatively similar perspectives on teachers and teaching.

Starting from a concept of teachers as critical and reflexive, this study is associated with the Education Graduate Program at FCT/UNESP in the line of research “Public Policies, School Organization and Teacher Education” and its general objective was to investigate how PIBID contributed to the process of initial training and the learning how to teach among students from the Mathematics teaching degree at the School of Science and Technology – FCT/UNESP, campus of Presidente Prudente/SP. With a qualitative approach and being a case study, the object of the research was the PIBID Group in the Mathematics teaching degree at the São Paulo State University “Júlio de Mesquita Filho”. Thus, the subjects were members of the group who participated in the process of preparing and developing pedagogical activities in public schools belonging the the State Education Network in the city of Presidente Prudente (SP). Semi-structured interviews were done with seventeen (17) persons, and one (1) of them was the PIBID group coordinator and sixteen (16) students who were scholarship holders in the program. I also adopted the procedure of observation, divided in two moments: class observation in which the activities prepared by the scholarship holders were conducted and the moments when the entire PIBID group got together in the meetings at the university. Documents that legally support the implementation of this Program at the university were reviewed, as well as the official documents that serve as the guidelines for the setup and development of PIBID. Data collected by means of documental review, by observation and by the interviews revealed contributions of the project so that a teachingdegree student may feel more secure and hold a critical view of the teaching and learning situations. Results highlighted how important it is to work, in the early teacher training, on situations that get the students closer to the school ambience, which helps in acquiring a professional identity. Measure that may effectively contribute to better articulate specific knowledge and pedagogical knowledge, as the school is the place where someone is trained and learns how to be a teacher.

Thesis in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Education in the Faculty of Education at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology Supervisor: Professor Rajendra Chetty Co-supervisor: Associate Professor Janet Condy November 2013
In South Africa, the quality of teachers working in our current education system has been put under a looking glass by the Department of Education (DoE) (2006) since the systemic results, indicating national literacy and numeracy levels in primary schools, were issued. These results place South African literacy and numeracy skills far below those of many countries in the rest of Africa. This has been viewed by the South African school sector as one of the symptoms of the breakdown in the culture of learning in the education system in our country. As a result, the South African school system has been characterised as a ‘high- cost, high-participation, low-quality system’ Taylor (2008). Taylor (2008) concludes from his research that the challenges which undermine effective teaching and learning in South African schools include the quality of teacher knowledge and teaching practices. The relationship between teacher quality and teacher productivity is key to the development of a high-quality educational system. It is argued that teacher quality impacts greatly on student achievement, which, in turn, impacts on the development and transformation of that society. Rowe (2003) and Morrow’s (2007) key findings in their research on educational success indicate that ‘what matters most’ is the quality teacher. The historical and social change in South Africa has pioneered transformation with regard to curriculum change and has redefined the aims of teacher education in this country. Over the last few years we have been faced with a myriad of changes in policy frameworks that are supposed to guide change within the educational system, as well as within teacher education (Guskey, 2002:381-391). This study, therefore, aims to interrogate the missing links between teacher education institutions and pre-service teachers’ experience, while incorporating school and learner needs. Since quality is the critical factor, there is an urgent need to re-conceptualise how we can prepare a generation of teachers equipped to meet the demands of the 21st-century student. The key objective in this study, therefore, is the interrogation of the following components in the initial teacher-training programmes in South Africa: • Professional development and knowledge of teachers. • Delivery of that knowledge from a pedagogical perspective. • Quality of current teacher-training programmes. This research project is geared towards understanding the challenges that face final-year teacher-training students as they prepare themselves to enter the ‘real world of teaching’. The study cross-examines the quality of learning and teaching in higher education institutions, the pedagogy applied and the degree of its success. In order to examine the initial teacher-training programmes there was a need to interrogate: • students’ perceptions of the quality of their training; • lecturers’ responses to the quality of training provided; and • pre-service teachers’ notions of the quality of the ‘product’ they experience in the field during practice teaching and in their experience with newly qualified teachers. The search for an alternative pedagogy, which aims to promote the transformation and reconstruction of education in South Africa, has placed this research project within a conceptual framework of critical pedagogy, which holds the view that learning is self-generated and not just accessible. The theoretical underpinnings were derived from the works of Paulo Freire and Henry Giroux. This project is situated within an interpretivist paradigm and is qualitative in nature. A sample of four faculties of education, nationally, has been used in the project. Semi-structured interviews and focus-group interviews were used to collect data from all the fourth-year BEd students and their lecturers at each of the four universities, as well as from in-service teachers who host students during practice teaching sessions. The interview questions were concerned with the delivery of the teacher-training programmes and whether the needs of students were being met with regard to their training. Students commented on the development of the following areas: delivery of knowledge, acquisition of adequate teaching skills, and their readiness to enter the teaching field. The findings of this research indicate that students, lecturers and in-service teachers believe that many components within the current teacher-training programme need to be transformed. This could be attributed to, amongst others, the inadequate pedagogical practices used in knowledge delivery, lack of actual classroom experience, and the ineffective organisation and supervision of teaching practice which results in students feeling ill-equipped to enter the teaching arena. These impact the quality of teachers who are exiting the current system. Suggestions to improve the organisation of teacher experience, the on-going professional development of teacher educators, and mentorship ofteachers,as well as the development of recruitment and selection criteria for students wishing to enter teacher education are made.

This work presents results of the bibliographic research and document analysis of qualitative approach, based mainly on the concepts of alphabetization and literacy discussed by Magda Soares, Maria do Rosario Mortatti, Cec?lia Goulart, Ana Luiza Smolka (Portuguese) and on the approach of Historical-Cultural Theory of Lev Vygotsky. Within the theme of teacher training, the research aimed to investigate how prolonged and systematic participation in pedagogical practices directly related to literacy can affect the initial literacy teacher education, reducing the reality shock and improving teaching mediation capacity. The overall goal of the research is to analyze the contributions and challenges of the Institutional Program of Scholarships for Teaching Initiation (PIBID) for literacy teacher education. The specific objectives of this research are (i) to put the spotlight on the complexity of the literacy process and the training of professionals who are dedicated to it (ii) to know the structure of Pibid and its dimension in a national level, (iii) to analyze the activities proposed and developed in PIBID - Literacy Sub projects for the literacy teacher s training, identifying its potential and limits. Data from the bibliographic research were collected in the Bank of Thesis and Dissertations from CAPES and in the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. For the document analysis we analyzed PIBID notices from the period of 2007 to 2013, activity reports and also blogs, maintained by Higher Education Institutions participants of Pibid, for promoting the activities developed by them. From the results we highlight (a) the potential of Pibid as a privileged space for teacher training, providing early immersion of the student teachers in the school culture and direct contact with the students and the specific objects of knowledge; (b) the lack of research on Pibid in elementary school and specially on literacy, (c) the diversity and prevalence of activities, carried out by undergraduates, which are not directly linked to literacy and (d) the discrete participation of public school teachers in these activities. The need to reflect on the specificities of Pibid when it comes to promoting significant experiences in the training of future teachers literacy is justified when we consider (i) literacy as a historically critical point in Brazilian education (ii) a process of intense complexity and (iii) the known difficulties of newly trained teachers during the early teaching (reality shock). The results show potentialities and also challenges to be addressed to improve the innovative condition that Pibid is for the initial formation of Brazilian teachers.

The object of this thesis is the Institutional Scholarship Teaching Initiation Program – PIBID – developed in the scope of the State University of Ponta Grossa - UEPG. The main objective was analyze the PIBID evaluation performed by graduates from the program who act teaching in the Basic Education, enabling to identify possible influences in their professional performance, due to their participation in the Program. The specific aims were: featuring the PIBID proposed by CAPES for Brazilian Higher education institutions, especially the projects developed in the UEPG; investigating the means of PIBID evaluation attributed by the graduates from the Program; deliberating on PIBID possibilities and weaknesses evidenced in the results from the evaluation process carried out with graduates from the Program; pointing to contributions, perspectives and challenges for development of an initial training for teaching addressed to improve the training processes in bachelor degree and the teaching in schools; presenting advantages and limitations of education programs from the graduates. The research problem was: What is the evaluation that graduates from PIBID carry out on the Program for their initial training and teaching profession? It is based on the theoretical referential about evaluation programs by Vianna (1999, 2005, 2014), Worthen, Sanders e Fitzpatrick (2004), Fernandes (2009b, 2011); and on teachers initial training mainly by Nóvoa (1995a, 1995b, 2002, 2009a), Contreras (2002), Tardif (2012), Marcelo (2009), Gatti and Nunes (2009), Gatti e Barreto (2009, among others. Evaluation theoretical assumptions are based on Rodrigues (1995), in the critical paradigm of evaluation. The research uses the evaluative case study methodology, with the following data collection procedures: documental analysis of Brazilian legislation on the PIBID, institutional and PIBID/UEPG of projects and reports; questionnaires and interviews with graduates in the period from 2010 to 2015; and questionnaires with institutional coordination and fields of the Program. For data analysis, the Content Analysis procedures by Bardin (2002) were used. Peculiarities of PIBID/UEPG were identified, which, in graduates opinion, reaches its objectives. In graduates’ evaluates, the Program contributes significantly for their training, providing reliability and autonomy for teaching performance. Despite the high satisfaction degree with the Program, some weaknesses are pointed: lack of resources; low value of the scholarship; in some cases, difficulties of relationship with schools and supervising professors, lack of dialogue among subprojects that enable actions and reflections really integrated. Evaluation processes during the Program presented training characteristics. The evaluation is Always a challenge, which is intensified when propose carry it out with graduates. There are difficulties to keep in touch with them and to convince them to participate in the evaluation processes.

This study has investigated the effectiveness of an initial teacher training programme provided by the Omani Colleges of Education in preparing science teachers. To understand the phenomena of this research, to give a picture as clear as possible of the topic under study and to determine the information that needs to be collected, a framework was established. A combination of qualitative and quantitative tools (questionnaires, interviews and document examination) was used to meet the aims of this study. The questionnaires and interviews were designed and tailored to relate specifically to the teachers' competencies that are required by the Omani Reformed General Education (the Basic Education: Stage Two). In addition, the importance and effectiveness of the programme's components were also investigated. The questionnaires were conducted with all the student science teachers in the final academic year, 2000/2001, and all the teacher educators in the departments of educational studies in all the six Omani Colleges of Education. Sub-samples of student teachers and teacher educators were interviewed. In addition, some newly qualified teachers were also interviewed. To carry out a careful analysis, a framework of data analysis was developed. The results are divided into three main sections. The first section addresses student teachers' competencies. The second section reports the participants' evaluation of the importance and effectiveness of the pedagogical courses. The third section covers the respondents' evaluation of the importance and the effectiveness of practicum aspects. In addition, results that emerged from the two last open-ended questions in the questionnaires and interviews and the effects of some variables on student teachers' competencies are presented. This study has indicated that while student science teachers demonstrated their ability in some competencies, they were deficient in the majority. In general, the results have indicated that approximately 86.96% of the competencies were rated to be average whereas only 10.87% of these competencies were viewed to be above average (i.e. competent). In addition, the majority of responses indicated that student teachers could use some experiential learning methods and some different assessment tools to a limited extent but not effectively. Furthermore, student science teachers are not fully prepared to use a problem-solving approach and ICT in teaching science. This research has produced interesting and useful data about the student teachers' competencies and the curriculum of the colleges and the manner in which it was implemented. It has not only shown a serious gap between the actual needs of science teachers (importance) and their preparation (effectiveness) by the colleges but identified also the areas of weakness. Some factors affecting the acquisition of the student teachers' competencies are addressed. Recommendations have been made for the Ministry of Higher Education for the development of the existing science teacher education programmes, and for the Ministry of Education (in-service teacher training). Issues for further research are also addressed

Global education is that focus of education which is concerned with coming to a better understanding of worldwide (i.e. multinational] perspectives, problems, issues, interdependencies and human values. It was initially found in North American educational systems after World War II and it became a major focus of attention in the 1970s. Some global education content can be found in the 1982 public school curricula of the ten Canadian provinces. There was no information in the educational literature concerning global education in Canadian teacher education programs and so this study was developed. In the late spring of this year a twelve-item questionnaire was mailed to the heads of the social studies departments (or equivalent] of those Canadian higher education institutions which offer teacher education at at least the bachelors degree level. Fifty-two such institutions were identified. Forty English-language and twelve French- language questionnaires were mailed out with appropriate cover letters explaining the study. Several weeks after the initial mailing a follow-up letter and an additional questionnaire were mailed to those institutions which had not yet responded. Replies were received from thirty-six of the fifty-two institutions. Eighteen of these identified global education courses at their institutions. More than fifty specific global education courses were identified, overall, and of these there were slightly more at the undergraduate than graduate level. Most courses were identified as being for pre-service rather than in-service teacher education. Only two non-credit courses (workshops) were identified. There was some indication that a few institutions plan to add one or two modules or courses on global education over the next few years. Information was also obtained concerning exchange programs, resource centers of information, and sources of funding for the promotion of global education in teacher education programs. The general conclusion of this study was that there appears to be a marginal to modest level of global education present in the teacher education programs across the country tin most of the provinces). A secondary and less solid conclusion of this study was that over the next three to five years it appears as though a global education emphasis in Canadian teacher education programs will either be maintained at present levels or will be increased slightly.

The object of this research is the formation of the student researcher under the perspective of these actors. The general purpose was to analyze the formation under the perspective of students’ researchers in three Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) partners of the Program Read and Write / Public School and University in Literacy / Literacy Exchange of the Government of the State of São Paulo. As specific objectives we listed the following: check if the student researcher develops activities to be delivered in training meetings and verify the students researchers if the advisor professors allow moments of exchange of knowledge coming from the practice in training meetings. Our hypothesis is that the formation of the student researcher does not occur effectively by some IHEs contrary the guidelines established by the official program and thus we seek to answer the following questions: How goes the training of students researchers in universities? How often? What are the topics covered in this training? Discussions allow the student researcher relates theory and teaching practice and takes ownership of the fundamentals of literacy? The training allows the stage in literacy courses is experienced from another viewpoint? Which? The universe of the research were three private IHEs located in São Paulo city whose subjects were six students researchers that study Pedagogy, from two of each institution. We used qualitative matrix method using a semi-structured interview as data collection instrument, as well as analysis of official documents governing this Program, namely: Communication SE 86, 2007; Resolution SE 86, 2007; Decree No. 51627, 2007, and Resolution SE 90, 2008. We have analyzed the interviews using the content analysis according to Bardin (2011). The research was based on the following authors: Ferreiro (1995 and 2003); Lerner (1995 and 2002) and Smith (1985, 2009 and 2011) in order to support the categories alphabetization and literacy; Contreras (2012), Nóvoa (1992) and Tardiff (2002) to reference the initial category of teacher education. As a result the researchers found that students in school A and B receive training more focused on administrative aspects, with few hours of study and reflection hindering the assessment of the basic concepts related to the literacy process, showing unsafe when immersed in school while the students researchers of the university C receive more geared to the pedagogical aspects of training, enabling them to have greater contact with the authors who discuss literacy in a constructivist perspective leading them to a better understanding of the concepts and therefore the procedures adopted by the regents teachers. We conclude that the students researchers from colleges A and B require theoretical study about the concepts related to literacy for better performance in the classroom.
Analisamos as entrevistas utilizando a Análise de conteúdo segundo Bardin (2011).

UK concerns over teacher shortages, and national and international interest in student retention contextualise this study. Addressing a dearth of evidence for undergraduate withdrawal in Initial Teacher Education (ITE), the thesis questions why students withdraw from their courses of ITE and why some consider withdrawal but persist. Located within a mixed-methods institutional case-study, quantitative survey approaches provide information about the incidence of withdrawal, persistence and the student experience amongst a population of 81 postgraduate and 490 undergraduate ITE students. Qualitative semi-structured interviews provide an in-depth understanding of the withdrawal or persistence of 29 students. A case-by-case analysis of interview data portrays the individuality and complexity of the withdrawal/persistence process; whilst a cross-sectional analysis considers factors affecting withdrawal and persistence across the 29 interviewees and .110 'persisting' questionnaire respondents. The research, drawing upon a social constructionist epistemology, accords primacy to the student perspective. Withdrawal from ITE was found to be affected by a range of factors: intra- personal, inter-personal, academic. professional, institutional and external. Antecedents of particular interest include intra-personal factors such as responses to stress, lack of confidence, and perfectionism; inter-personal factors including bullying; and aspects of teacher identity. contrasting voluntary withdrawal with persistence suggests that goal commitment and determination are strong antecedents of persistence. Other factors which seem to promote short-term continuation include: support; course-related factors; and intra-personal qualities such as coping strategies, self-efficacy and perseverance. Such factors provide a window for supportive intervention, with the hypothesis that those interventions affecting goal commitment are likely to be the most successful in promoting continuation. The study analysed evidence of an unwillingness to seek institutional support. Given that support was identified as a factor in continuation, avoidance of support is a key finding.

A radical review of initial teacher training in England and Wales was brought about by the implementation of Circular 9/92, 'Initial Teacher Training (Secondary Phase)' (DES, 1992). The Circular laid out criteria and procedures for accreditation of courses. This virtually removed the traditional autonomy that the universities had had in the training of initial teachers for over one hundred years. The roles and responsibilities of tutors and teachers were drastically changed, with teachers becoming 'mentors' and taking almost total control of the extensive school-based elements, including the assessment of students. Tutors had to prepare students for their extended school experiences, train mentors and carry out a quality control function to ensure the students were adequately trained in the schools. Courses were to be based on the achievement by students of competences which were for the most part concerned with the acquisition of classroom skills. Thus theory was to be subordinate to practice. It followed logically from this that the schools' contribution was to become more vital than that of the Higher Education Institutions (REls). The REls were to form partnerships with schools and the teachers empowered to train new teachers in a way not before envisaged. This posed the questions: Would it work? Could it work? This thesis examines the development of one such Partnership. It traces the thinking behind the philosophy of the Partnership and the influence that philosophy had on Course development. It highlights the innovative features of the Course and identifies the structural and procedural difficulties that arose from the developmental processes. It attempts to evaluate the success of the first year of the Partnership by examiningthe provision for student training in the schools and in the University, and to provide guidelines for the development of the programme. The evaluation of provision was carried out by using questionnaires which identified every element of training provided by the Partnership. Three questionnaires were developed with students, mentors and tutors identifying the elements received or provided. The responses made by the different parties were then compared. The results of the study demonstrated that the Partnership is generally working successfully in the training of students on the secondary Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Course which is an example of good Initial Teacher Education (ITE). The Course has many strengths and some weaknesses. The greatest strength is the provision made for the students so they may develop the skills required to be excellent classroom practitioners. Both mentors and tutors have adopted the role of student trainers successfully and most mentors have worked through the competency model of ITE. The weaknesses lie in the following areas: the consistency of provision for students; the variety of activities experienced by students; the appropriate use of the competency model of training by some tutors and; the integration of theory and practice by the majority of both mentors and tutors. As the Partnership evolves all the weaknesses have been, or are being addressed, with the exception of the integration of theory and practice which still remains a thorny issue.

This thesis considers the initial teacher education of non-specialist primary undergraduate student teachers in teaching Religious Education. The focus of the research is a short module taught in the second year of the students’ degree course, which prepares students to teach in predominantly multicultural classrooms in London. The module adopts an Interpretive Approach to Religious Education, which contributes to a realignment of the students’ conceptualisation of knowledge through examination of the concepts of episteme and phronesis. Findings show that overt acknowledgement of the student teachers’ developing professional understandings, situated in decisions which reference values as well as subject knowledge, can alter their understanding and confidence about teaching Religious Education and indicates wider benefit in their appreciation of their developing teacher personae. The Structure of the Research Chapter 1 is a contextual introduction which presents a series of lenses through which to view the Religious Education module. Chapter 2 is an exploration of three main ideas which influenced the research: the Interpretive Approach to RE, the concept of phronesis, and the benefits to understanding pedagogy through self-study in teacher education. Chapter 3 explains the methodological thinking behind the research, ethical considerations and the methods employed. These include practitioner research, use of ethnographic and reflexive lenses and analysis of data from both students and personal reflection through self-study. Chapter 4 reports the findings from the research carried out with students, exploring the ideas which emerge from their responses to the module and my observations and interviews which illuminate ideas which emerge from the analysis. Chapter 5 is a discussion of the content and development of the module itself, exploring the impact and development of activities which influence the students’ understanding of RE. Chapter 6 draws together the threads of the research to explore the vision of a transformative ITE RE module, which recognises the value of acknowledging and developing phronesis in primary non-specialist student teacher education and concludes with recommendations to improve the current situation in RE in primary ITE.

Because of the importance that the Institutional Scholarship Program Introduction to Teaching - PIBID - in order to encourage and enhance the teaching profession since 2007, this study aims to investigate the PIBID contributions UFABC to its graduates, analyzing how they consider program for vocational training. The approach of theory and teaching practice has long been debated among researchers and theorists, and PIBID shows on the way to mitigate these differences by placing the licentiate in touch with the reality of public schools, allowing the university and the school basic education to exchange experiences, enriching the learning of researchers from universities, undergraduates and teachers of basic education. We investigated seven graduates of the Bachelor of UFABC, who participated in the PIBID using discourse analysis as a methodology for analyzing the interviews with the subjects. We establish some a priori categories, which were previously defined and build the corpus for analysis and insight into emerging categories from the readings of the transcribed interviews. As a result, we found that the program achieved its objectives proposed in this university in physics subprojects, chemistry, biology and mathematics, from 2010 to 2012, raising the quality of initial teacher training from contact with practice, allowing through collaborative activities within the proposals PIBID / UFABC, a range of these graduates for the start of their professional activities outside the university and the care of a housemaster is reached.these also preparing graduates to work as reflective practitioners who can work with proposals for collaborative work, to be able to leave the traditional teaching, if they dare. In addition, we observed that PIBID / UFABC prepares its graduates for academic life, through contact with the research on the practice. In this sense, this research contributes to an initial analysis of the situation of graduates of PIBID UFABC, highlighting the features that the program developed in this university presented as a result.

The challenges of the Great Recession of 2008 have impacted the field of education to the point that many intern programs have ceased to exist. Alternative (or Intern) teacher preparation programs have also become an increasingly popular topic, especially since the term "highly qualified teachers" will soon be up for re-assessment. Concerns over the quality of teacher preparation programs have yet to yield conclusive results and seems to be an unending debate. This study has provided a glimpse into two intern programs and the process by which these programs have evolved. There were 6 major themes that emerged out of this study: Communication & Collaboration, Support, Financial Influences, Individual Dynamics, Beyond Curriculum and How Programs have Evolved to Remain Current. This study described participant perspectives that relate only not how these two intern programs survived during the challenging economic crisis, but how they have managed to thrive. Efforts were made by each program to utilize low intern enrollment to their benefit by providing added supports and individualized programming to better meet the needs of interns/teachers in training. Three intern participants, two Intern program directors and four intern program instructors have provided their perceptions on their programs to illustrate a clearer picture of how their respective intern programs have evolved to remain current in this challenging economically turbulent time.

With no apparent theoretical justification the Department of Education (DFE) Circular 9/92 has made mandatory, school-based Initial Teacher Training (ITT) whereby trainees are located in schools for the majority of their training. Schools and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have been encouraged by government to form complementary partnerships in which the school is the senior partner responsible for final assessment. Central to school-based partnership training is the role of the subject specific mentor who has, it is claimed in the literature on mentoring, a new and exacting task to perform as teacher educator rather than the purely supervisory role pre-1992. The tentative hypothesis is that there is a gap between the rhetoric of mentoring and the reality of mentoring in school-based partnership ITT post-1992. Three models representing `stages' of professional development: the apprenticeship model; the competency model and the `reflective practitioner' model of mentoring are considered from the perspective of both subject mentors and trainees. The data, gathered by participant observation, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and recorded mentor-trainee feedback sessions, investigates to what extent there is in the training year slavish imitation reinforced by practical skills associated with apprenticeship, and/or professional development in trainee learning informed and extended by trainee access to teacher expertise. Changes in ITT appear largely administrative, mentors focusing on supervision of competent apprentices, passing on basic skills using a `top-down' model of knowledge transfer to passive novices. A model of mentoring is outlined whereby the professional tutor assumes a school leadership role, liaising with the HEI partner in joint planning of ITT, taking responsibility for trainee overview and professional development of Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs). Two stages of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) are described in a model of future teacher preparation whereby master classroom practitioners can be professionally identified and appropriately rewarded.

Due to teacher shortages, school districts have offered incentives and alternative licensure programs. Recently, however, school districts have shifted the focus from recruitment to one of teacher retention which places an emphasis upon beginning teacher induction programs. These programs help teachers improve in their craft of teaching, help teachers remain satisfied with their jobs, help teachers enculturate into the districts in which they work, and help to improve student achievement. This quantitative study examined fifth year teachers’ perceptions of their induction programs in terms of teacher retention. The 280 eligible teachers from three different school districts were asked to participate by completing an electronic survey, which asked questions regarding their experiences and perceptions of their induction program, and by participating in a focus group session. No statistical significance was shown between the different components of the induction program and teacher retention. However, by examining the means of responses given and the frequencies, reviewers may be able to glean information, indicating which components were more positively perceived by teachers. Findings suggest that learning styles, attitudes, and professional growth needs have more of an impact upon teacher perception of the value of the different components. In order to retain good teachers in the classroom, staff developers need to offer a wide range of professional growth opportunities. For the staff developer, designing an induction program which meets the needs and learning styles of all beginning teachers becomes problematic.

The central question explored in this study is how can Initial Teacher Education (ITE) be developed to enhance the skills, confidence and preparedness of student teachers for Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) and inclusive practice? It involved an inclusive action research (IAR) project involving teachers, teaching assistants, student teachers and a university tutor within one partnership school. The IAR focused on the actions that participants agreed were immediately relevant to preparation for inclusive classrooms. To deepen the potential transferability of the study, additional research methods were used to reflect on the IAR and the wider placement context so that factors supportive of professional development could be identified and understood. The study demonstrated that remodelling partnership as collaborative enquiry among students, practitioners and an academic tutor (Mclntyre, 2009) can enable reflexive engagement with conceptual and practical dilemmas in ways that may enhance the professional development of students and more experienced practitioners. It also captured an account of the complex nature of inclusive practice and the manner in which practitioners adopt particular conceptual positions (e.g. capability discourses) to enhance their own self-efficacy whilst operating contradictory discourses (e.g. deficit discourses) when mediating external cultures. Supportive to professional development for student teachers and school staff was; a collaborative culture; opportunities for students and more experienced staff to engage in structured, systematic, collaborative enquiry in the context ofthe school placement; the demotion of the discourses of expertism (Slee, 2010); the promotion of capacity discourses for SEND and opportunities for reflexive work. The study raises questions about the appropriateness of individuated competence standards for inclusive practice and suggests that teacher education must embrace more complex, research-oriented, dilemmatic, critical-theoretical and socially situated pedagogic frameworks, networking ITE into continuing profeSSional development in ways that enable career-long development in support of education for all.

Self-determination, as it applies to special education, has been studied extensively. While the effects of self-determination for students with disabilities are established, there is still limited knowledge of the presence of the construct in preservice teacher preparation programs. This study begins to addresses this gap. In particular, a nationwide sample of secondary general education and special education teacher preparation programs was examined. Department chairs and program coordinators were surveyed and revealed a significant difference in the mean self-determination score of participants representing special education teacher preparation programs and participants representing secondary general education teacher preparation programs. Specifically, special education teacher preparation participants had a significantly higher mean score on the ‘Autonomy’ and ‘Self-Regulation’ sections of the survey across all participants, ‘Autonomy’ had the lowest mean of all of the sections. Participants identifying as a department chair had a significantly higher self-determination score than participants that did not identify as a department chair. Finally, participants representing a university located in a state with standards for secondary special education and self-determination had a significantly higher self-determination score than participants located in a state without a standard for secondary special education and self-determination.

This thesis examines students’ experiences of learning to teach mathematics as they complete a primary Postgraduate Certificate in Education to gain qualified teacher status. The research data are drawn from students’ accounts of learning to teach mathematics, which include email communications during their studies and interviews with eight students at the end of the course. Analysis is informed by post-structuralist feminist understandings of discourse, power and knowledge. These tools are used to explore the complexities of learning to teach, the ways in which beginning teachers are ‘produced’, what counts as mathematics and the effects of power relations within pedagogical encounters. I use a reflexive approach to methodology, acknowledging the ways in which my own subjectivity permeates the enquiry, and the ways in which power permeates the research process. The study found performances of gender in students’ accounts of their experiences of the course, both on campus and in schools. Dominant discourses of teaching and mathematics create tensions for students and act as a form of control and categorisation as they strive to be recognised as legitimate mathematics teachers. It is argued that students’ subjectivities are shaped by discursive practices and peer and pedagogical relationships in the context of the course and that students are constituted as mathematical subjects often in inequitable ways. They are both powerful and powerless in different instances as they take up competing discourses, positioning themselves and their peers in shifting locations. Some students are silenced, categorised and marginalised within discourses of mathematics. Most report complying with the established practices of the school and class teacher and focused on the struggle to achieve legitimacy as successful student teachers. They 2 demonstrate both compliance with and resistance to dominant discourses as they are caught between the tensions and inconsistencies of competing and conflicting discourses. A key implication of this study is that teachers, teacher educators and student teachers need opportunities to explore their own gendered subjectivities as learners and teachers and to acknowledge that learning to teach mathematics is not solely a cognitive endeavour but one deeply located in social relations and contexts. Within teacher education more spaces need to be opened up to enable student teachers to embody themselves as mathematics subjects and primary teachers differently.

The overall aim of the research was to develop a better understanding of creativity in assessment, in order to facilitate achievement of the programme aim of developing creative teachers. This illuminative evaluation, within an interpretivist, social constructivist paradigm, was undertaken as practitioner research on an undergraduate primary education programme. During my reading and initial research I developed the Creativity Pyramid, which combined a wide range of phrases drawn from definitions of creativity, set in four hierarchical layers. I analysed existing assignment documents and school placement booklets for phrases related to creativity, using my Creativity Pyramid. In order to discover perceptions about creativity in campus-based assignments and school placement, I interviewed tutors (n=9) and students (n=7), held a virtual focus group and used semi-structured questionnaires with two year groups (Year 2, n=32; Year 1, n=55). I used an inductive approach to coding this data before identifying themes. The research showed there were opportunities for creativity in assessment on the programme, except in exams. Assessment for learning, which was more prevalent in school placement, was found to promote creativity. The campus-based assignments which were perceived as more creative were often those which required engaging an audience, such as presentations and creating resources. These assignments also had stronger constructive alignment of creativity aspects between the assignment brief and marking grid. Using the findings I developed the Creativity Cascade, which indicates facilitators and inhibitors of creativity in the cascade from tutor and teacher-mentor to student-teacher to pupil. The main recommendations were to establish a shared definition of creativity, to use this to ensure constructive alignment in all aspects of assessment, to review the core subject assignments and to increase the use of assessment for learning.

This dissertation takes an exploratory perspective towards work meetings in which a group of future teachers and their teacher educator participate. These meetings happen in the context of the Institutional Grants Program for Initial Teacher Education (PIBID|CAPES), which started in 2007 as a federal government encouragement of initial teacher education. Oriented by the principles of Exploratory Practice, this research is qualitative in nature and was developed within a participatory and collaborative paradigm. In its search for understandings about teacher education and due to its interest in studying the discourse of socio-historically-situated meetings, this interdisciplinary Applied Linguistics research also relies on concepts of Interactional Sociolinguistics and Conversation Analysis to provide deeper understanding of what is happening in the interactions between participants. The data selected for analysis were the audio-recordings of two meetings: one among undergraduates and the other in the presence of their teacher educator and were analyzed in order to understand and reflect on the beliefs and issues that emerge in the discourse of future teachers and in their identities, as constructed in their combined roles of undergraduate students, grantees and future teachers. The understandings generated by this interpretative study point to the interactional construction of identities, as participants discuss their beliefs and issues about life inside and outside the classroom. This group s belief system resembles and distances itself from that of the teacher-researcher, both as a former undergraduate and as a novice teacher. The current investigative reflection contributed by generating greater intelligibility about emerging themes in initial teacher education. It was possible to reach relevant understandings about the discourse of initial teachers and to problematize the influence of this discourse on the quality of life of the classrooms where these future teachers will work.
