AbstractThe Yale–Potsdam Stellar Isochrones (YaPSI) cover the low and intermediate stellar mass regime (0.15 to 5.0 M⊙) for a wide range of solar-scaled chemical compositions (metallicity from −0.5 to +0.3; helium mass fraction from 0.25 to 0.37, assigned independently of each other). The tracks are finely spaced in mass, to allow for accurate interpolation. The models feature state-of-the-art input physics relevant to low-mass stars modeling (surface boundary conditions, equation of state), thus updating the faint end of the Yonsei-Yale (YY) isochrones. Utility codes, such as an isochrone interpolator in age, metallicity and helium content, are also provided. The YaPSI isochrones are in good agreement with the empirical mass–luminosity and mass–radius relations available to date, and provide satisfactory fitting of the color-magnitude diagrams of well-studied open clusters.

123 Background: Clinical stage T2c is a nebulous factor in the algorithm for prostate cancer risk stratification. According to D’Amico risk stratification cT2c is high-risk category where NCCN guidelines place this stage in intermediate-risk. As diagnostic work up with the use of MRI continues to escalate clinical staging may become more important. As cT2c represents a possible decision fork in treatment decisions we sought to investigate which risk group the clinical behavior of cT2c tumors more closely resembles. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from 1089 men who underwent radical prostatectomy (RP) from 1988 to 2009 who did not have low-risk CaP from the SEARCH database. We compared time to BCR between men with cT2c disease, those with intermediate-risk (PSA 10-20 ng/ml or Gleason sum (GS) =7), and those with high-risk (PSA>20 ng/ml, GS 8-10, cT3) using Cox regression models adjusting for age, race, year of RP, center, and percent cores positive. We also compared predictive accuracy of two Cox models wherein cT2c was considered either intermediate- or high-risk by calculating concordance index c. Results: A total of 68 men (3.4%) had cT2c tumors. After a median follow-up of 47.5 months, there was no difference in BCR risk between men with intermediate-risk CaP and those with cT2c tumors (HR=0.90; p=0.60). In contrast, there was a trend for men with high-risk CaP to have nearly 50% increased BCR risk compared to men with cT2c tumors (HR=1.50; 95% CI=0.97-2.30; p=0.07) which did not reach statistical significance. Concordance index c was higher in the Cox model wherein cT2c tumors were considered intermediate-risk (c=0.6147) as opposed to high-risk (c=0.6106). Conclusions: BCR risk for patients with clinical stage T2c was more comparable to men who had intermediate-risk CaP than men with high-risk. In addition, a model which incorporates cT2c disease as intermediate-risk has better predictive accuracy. These findings suggest men with cT2c disease should be offered treatment options for men with intermediate-risk CaP. As clinical staging more routinely incorporates MRI there is the potential to better identify bilateral organ-confined CaP and further establish risk classification.

In this project, interruption based image resolution enhancement technique using Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) with high-frequency sub bands obtained is proposed. Input images are decomposed by using DWT in this proposed enhancement technique. Inverse DWT is used to generate a new resolution enhanced image from the interpolation of high-frequency sub band images and the input low-resolution image. Intermediate stage has been proposed for estimating the high frequency sub bands to achieve a sharper image. It has been tested on benchmark images from public database. Peak Signal-To-Noise Ratio (PSNR) and visual results show the dominance of the proposed technique over the predictable and state-of-art image resolution enhancement techniques.

A database of 386 laboratory triaxial compression, direct simple shear, rotational shear, and triaxial extension test results was collected to examine yield and liquefied strength ratio concepts used in liquefaction analysis of sloping ground. These data envelope the yield and liquefied strength ratios obtained from back-analyses of liquefaction flow failure case histories. Generally, triaxial compression exhibits the highest yield and liquefied strength ratios, triaxial extension yields the lowest ratios, and direct simple shear – rotational shear shows intermediate responses. However, mode of shear appears to have a considerably smaller effect on laboratory-measured liquefied strength ratios for specimens with a positive state parameter (i.e., difference in consolidation void ratio and steady state void ratio at the same effective stress).

The probability of failure of tailing dams and associated risks demand improvements in engineering practice. The critical state line provides a robust framework for the characterization of mine tailings. New experimental data for nonplastic platinum tailings and a large database for tailings and nonplastic soils (grain size between 2 and 500 μm) show that the critical state parameters for nonplastic tailings follow the same trends as nonplastic soils as a function of particle-scale characteristics and extreme void ratios. Critical state lines determined for extreme tailings gradations underestimate the range of critical state parameters that may be encountered in a tailings dam; in fact, mixtures with intermediate fines content exhibit the densest granular packing at critical state. The minimum void ratio emin captures the underlying role of particle shape and grain size distribution on granular packing and emerges as a valuable index property to inform sampling strategies for the assessment of spatial variability. Mineralogy does not significantly affect the intercept Γ100, but it does affect the slope λ. The friction coefficients M of tailings are similar to those of other nonplastic soils; while mineralogy does not have a significant effect on friction, more angular grains lead to higher friction coefficients.

Introduction. Endometrial cancer ranks the third place in prevalence among all cancers in Ukraine. The surgical treatment and subsequent adjuvant treatment is planned according to the patient's risk group. The choice of radiation therapy and the need to add chemotherapy determines the level of recurrence-free survival. Objective. The aim of the study was to analyze the database of treated patients in National Cancer Institute, with I stage endometrial cancer intermediate and high-intermediate group; determination of the most frequent choice of radiation treatment in accordance with the risk group of patients with a hysterectomy with salpingo-oophorectomy for further observation and evaluation of diseasefree survival. Materials and methods. Retrospective was analysed 245 patients with high and intermediate risk groups with stage I endometrial cancer. The exclusion criteria were: low-risk patients, stages II–IV and non-endometrioid histological variant. Results. According to the analysis, there were 122/245 (49.8 %) patients of high risk group, 123/245 (50.2 %) of intermediate risk group. High-risk patients underwent external beam therapy and brychytherapy, supplemented by chemotherapy in 5.8 % of cases (7 patients), brachytherapy with external beam therapy was performed in 58.2 % of cases (71 patients), brachytherapy – in 8.1 % of cases (10 patients), external beam therapy was performed in 27.9 % cases. Intermediate and high-intermediate risk patients were distributed as follows: brachytherapy was performed in 41.5 % of cases (51 patients), brachytherapy with external beam therapy – 54.5 % (67 patients), external beam therapy was performed in 5 patients. Conclusion. Brachytherapy is available for patients with intermediate risk endometrial cancer and external beam therapy with possible addition of brachytherapy is recommended for high-intermediate and high-risk groups, especially in patients with lymphatic vascular involvement. All patients are monitored for further assessment of recurrence-free survival. Key words: endometrial cancer, lymphadenectomy, external beam therapy, chemo- and radiotherapy.

Oligometastatic prostate cancer (OMPC) is an intermediate state between localised disease and widespread metastases that includes a spectrum of disease biology and clinical behaviours. This narrative review will cover the current OMPC scenario. We conducted comprehensive English language literature research for original and review articles using the Medline database and grey literature through December 2021. OMPC is a unique clinical state with inherently more indolent tumour biology susceptible to multidisciplinary treatment (MDT). With the development of new imaging techniques, patients with OMPC are likely to be identified at an earlier stage, and the paradigm for treatment is shifting towards a more aggressive approach to treating potentially curable patients. Multimodal management is necessary to improve patient outcomes due to the combination of available therapies, such as local therapy of primary tumour, metastasis directed therapy or systemic therapy, to reduce tumour load and prevent further disease progression. Additional prospective data are needed to select patients most likely to benefit from a given therapeutic approach.

Context.We aim to present a comprehensive theoretical investigation of dielectronic recombination (DR) of the silicon-like isoelectronic sequence and provide DR and radiative recombination (RR) data that can be used within a generalized collisional-radiative modelling framework.Aims.Total and final-state level-resolved DR and RR rate coefficients for the ground and metastable initial levels of 16 ions between P+and Zn16+are determined.Methods.We carried out multi-configurational Breit-Pauli DR calculations for silicon-like ions in the independent processes, isolated resonance, distorted wave approximation. Both Δnc= 0 and Δnc= 1 core excitations are included usingLSand intermediate coupling schemes.Results.Results are presented for a selected number of ions and compared to all other existing theoretical and experimental data. The total dielectronic and radiative recombination rate coefficients for the ground state are presented in tabulated form for easy implementation into spectral modelling codes. These data can also be accessed from the Atomic Data and Analysis Structure (ADAS) OPEN-ADAS database. This work is a part of an assembly of a dielectronic recombination database for the modelling of dynamic finite-density plasmas.

Studies conducted in historical populations and developing countries have evidenced the existence of clustering in infant deaths, which could be related to genetic inheritance and/or to social and cultural factors such as education, socioeconomic status or parental care. A transmission of death clustering has also been found across generations. One way of expanding the knowledge on intergenerational transfers in infant mortality is by conducting comparable studies across different populations. The Intermediate Data Structure (IDS) was developed as a strategy aimed at simplifying the collecting, storing and sharing of historical demographic data. The current work presents two programs that were developed in STATA to construct a dataset for analysis and run statistical models to study intergenerational transfers in infant mortality using databases that are stored in the IDS. The programs use information stored in the IDS tables and after elaborating such information produce Excel files with results. They can be used with any longitudinal database constructed from church books, civil registers, or population registers.

In shared-disk database systems, disk access has to be scheduled properly to avoid unnecessary contention between processors. The first part of this report studies the allocation of intermediate results of join queries (buckets) on disk and derives heuristics to determine the number of processing nodes and disks to employ. Using an analytical model, we show that declustering should be applied even for single buckets to ensure optimal performance. In the second part, we consider the order of reading the buckets and demonstrate the necessity of highly dynamic load balancing to prevent excessive disk contention, especially under skew conditions.

Flow in a turbine duct is highly complex, influenced by the upstream turbine stage flow structures, including tip leakage flow and non-uniformities originating from the upstream HP vane and rotor. The complexity of the flow makes the prediction using CFD methods difficult, hence there exists a need for experimental validation. This paper presents a new design of an intermediate turbine duct with a structural vane that has been designed, manufactured and integrated into the Oxford Turbine Research Facility. This is a short duration high speed test facility enabling the use of an engine sized turbine, operating at the correct non-dimensional parameters relevant for aerodynamic and heat transfer measurements. The current configuration consists of a HP stage and a downstream duct including a low-aspect ratio vane, representative for a counter rotating turbine configuration. Aerodynamic and heat transfer measurements are conducted to generate a database with which current CFD methods can be validated. The instrumentation presented here includes static pressure tappings and thin film heat transfer gauges on the ITD vane surface and endwalls. The time averaged measurements show the impact of different clocking positions of the ITD vane with respect to the up-stream HP vane. This demonstrates the requirements of addressing the influence of vane counts and stator-stator clocking when designing new components. The measurements are compared with CFD predictions.

Abstract This paper presents the development of an efficient and direct method for evaluating the steady-state response of periodically time-varying linear systems. The method is general, and its efficacy is demonstrated in its application to a high-speed elastic mechanism. The dynamics of a mechanism comprised of elastic members may be described by a system of coupled, inhomogeneous, nonlinear, second-order partial differential equations with periodically time-varying coefficients. More often than not, these governing equations may be linearized and, facilitated by separation of time and space variables, reduced to a system of linear ordinary differential equations with variable coefficients. Closed-form, numerical expressions for response are derived by dividing the fundamental time period of solution into subintervals, and establishing an equal number of continuity constraints at the intermediate time nodes, and a single periodicity constraint at the end time nodes of the period. The symbolic solution of these constraint equations yields the closed-form numerical expression for the response. The method is exemplified by its application to problems involving a slider-crank mechanism with an elastic coupler link.

Abstract This paper presents an object-oriented feature-based CAD/CAPP/CAM integration framework in a concurrent engineering environment. The framework which is still under development at Yuan-Ze’s automation center is a layered hierarchy based on an object-oriented feature-based part model. The part model serves as a central database for design, process planning, and manufacturing related activities. Feature-based design approach in conjunction with feature recognition approach is incorporated in this integration framework. This dual approach can balance overall computational efficiency and modeling complexity of the interface between design and process planning. There are three levels at the process planning stage : primary level, secondary level and detailing level. The primary level is concerned with the issues of intermediate shape generation. At the secondary process planning level the intermediate specifications of features and workpieces are determined. The detailing level elaborates on the selection of corresponding facilities and parameters for each manufacturing operation. This manufacturing information is used to drive the downstream CAM activities such as NC part programming, production control and scheduling, operation setup and so forth.

Abstract This paper describes CHAMP, a conceptual architecture designed to support the task of passing information from computer-aided design systems to computer-aided process planning systems.1 Current integration systems are lacking in the flexibility of both their information-exchange mechanisms and in their control structures. The result is a sacrifice in the efficiency of solutions produced. The proposed architecture is based on models of human process planning, and aims to improve the effectiveness of CAD/CAPP integration by providing more flexible communications and control structures through shared blackboards, and by providing a mechanism for reasoning about intermediate solution states. The architecture is intended to summarize the current understanding of the CAD/CAPP integration task and to elucidate areas where further research is required.

Forging sequence design is mainly carried out using empirical rules for the design of the intermediate die shapes, in addition to many trail-and-error runs resulting in prolonged development times and higher costs. An integrated optimal design of preform shapes and process conditions approach to minimize the energy required is essential. The research presented in this article aims at developing an optimization algorithm to determine the optimum intermediate die shape-designs that minimize the total energy required during the forging process sequence. It is based on the results obtained in the previous research with focus on knowledge base and database representation to design precision forging solid gears and provide detailed process specification. A three-step algorithm, which addresses gear construction design, manufacturability analysis of gear construction and die-design optimization, is used to generate the parametric gear model and automatically extract design information for manufacturing process planning based on the feature-based parametric design system. Utilization of the shape optimization method for preform stages avoids costly production problems. The optimized approach provides accurate description of all stages involved in the forging process. Forging load and energy required, along with metal flow and detailed geometry specification of die forms for every forging stage are obtained. The forging energy requirements based on this approach are as much as 25% lower than those arrived from die designs based on actual tooth profile geometry.

Coordinated Research Project (CRP) on EBR-II Shutdown Heat Removal Tests (SHRT) was established by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The objective of the project is to support and to improve validation of simulation tools and projects for Sodium-cooled Fast Reactors (SFR). The Experimental Breeder Reactor II (EBR-II) plant was a uranium metal-alloy-fuelled liquid-metal-cooled fast reactor designed and operated by Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) for the U.S. Department of Energy at the Argonne-West site. In the frame of this project, benchmark analysis of one of the EBR-II shutdown heat removal tests, protected loss-of-flow transient (SHRT-17), has been performed. The aim of this paper is to present modeling of EBR-II reactor design using RELAP-3D, to show the results of the transient analysis of SHRT-17, and to discuss the results of application of the Fast Fourier Transform Based Method (FFTBM) to perform a quantitative accuracy evaluation of the model developed. Complete nodalization of the reactor was made from the beginning. Model is divided in primary side that contains core, pumps, reactor pool and, for this kind of reactor specific, Z pipe, and intermediate side that contains Intermediate Heat Exchanger (IHX). After achievement of acceptable steady-state results, transient analysis was performed. Starting from full power and flow, both the primary loop and intermediate loop coolant pumps were simultaneously tripped and the reactor was scrammed to simulate a protected loss-of-flow accident. In addition, the primary system auxiliary coolant pump, that normally had an emergency battery power supply, was turned off. Despite early rise of the temperature in the reactor, the natural circulation characteristics managed to keep it at acceptable levels and cooled the reactor down safely at decay heat power levels. Thermal-hydraulics characteristics and plant behavior was focused on prediction of natural convection cooling by evaluating the reactor core flow and temperatures and their comparison with experimental data that were provided by ANL. Finally, the process of qualification of a system thermal-hydraulic code calculation was applied. It consists of three steps: 1) the geometrical fidelity of the nodalization, related with the evaluation and comparison of the geometrical data of the hardware respect to the estimated numerical values implemented in the nodalization; 2) the steady state level qualification, dealing with the capability of the nodalization to reproduce the steady state qualified conditions of the system; 3) the “on-transient” qualification, necessary to demonstrate the capability of the code and of the developed nodalization to reproduce the relevant thermal-hydraulic phenomena expected during the transient. The latter is a very complex step which foreseen different phases following our methodology of qualification (SCCRED, Standardized and Consolidated Calculated & Reference Experimental Database methodology). In the framework of the benchmark, the focus was only on the so called “Quantitative Accuracy Evaluation” that is performed by the FFTBM.

In today’s modern world, development of industry and technology has led to the increase in energy demand. Hence, more fossil fuels are burnt in order to cover this demand. Due to the multiple disadvantages, as well as the negative impact that burning of fossil fuels has on the environment, heat pumps are gaining more importance when providing energy for heating. This paper is aimed at conducting thermodynamic optimization of cascade heat pump in terms of different working fluid combinations and calculating maximum COP. In order to perform thermodynamic analysis, a software program that uses database of working fluids, was developed. The intermediate temperature within cascade heat exchanger represents a crucial parameter when analyzing and designing cascade heat pumps. Thus, when performing thermodynamic analysis, the intermediate temperature was varied in the range from 0°С to 25°С and the optimal temperature that provides maximum COP was defined. The analysis was performed on an air–to–water heat pump, that could be used for heating different types of buildings in places in Serbia where the outdoor design temperature is –20°С. The cascade heat pump would be used alongside radiator heating system operating at temperatures 70°С/50°С. Due to the high temperature difference between heat source and heat sink, cascade heat pumps have advantages over single stage or multi stage heat pumps. The optimization was performed on an air–to–water cascade heat pump where the evaporation and condensation temperatures were –25°С and 75°С, respectively. Following the conducted optimization, the analysis of the impact that isentropic efficiency of compressor has on COP was examined.

Background: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a promising adjuvant therapy for Parkinson’s disease (PD) in intermediate and advanced states, improving motor symptoms and life quality. Objectives: To investigate the efficacy of DBS in PD treatment. Design and Setting: Systematic review performed on medical school in Brazil. Methods: A literature review in the MedLine database was conducted using the following descriptors: “Deep Brain Stimulation”, “Parkinson’s Disease” and its variations according to MeSH. Only randomized controlled trials conducted in humans and published in English in the last 10 years were included. The PRISMA statement was used to improve this systematic review’s findings. Results: Three clinical trials that evaluated the effects of DBS in PD’s management were analysed. The main result measurement tools used in the studies were the PDQ-39-SI and UPDRS-III scores. Hacked ML et al. (2018) concluded that drug therapy + DBS was significantly superior to isolated drug therapy (p <0.0002). Schuepbach WMM et al. (2019) found that the experimental group presented significantly better outcomes in comparison to the control group (p <0,05). Birchall EL et al. (2016) suggested that the DBS device implant in the subthalamic nucleus caused significant improvement in depressive symptoms, motor symptoms, quality of sleep (p <0.0001) and quality of life (p=0.0005) in comparison to the control group. Conclusions: DBS has shown to be an efficient therapy for PD, once it promoted better outcomes regarding motor symptoms, depression, quality of life and quality of sleep. However, it is necessary to be aware of eventual side effects in the post-operative period.

Objectives. To evaluate the effectiveness and harms of pain management programs that are based on the biopsychosocial model of care, particularly in the Medicare population. Data sources. Electronic databases (Ovid® MEDLINE®, PsycINFO®, CINAHL®, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews) from 1989 to May 24, 2021; reference lists; and a Federal Register notice. Review methods. Given lack of consensus on terminology and program definition for pain management, we defined programs as integrated (based in and integrated with primary care) and comprehensive (referral based and separate from primary care) pain management programs (IPMPs and CPMPs). Using predefined criteria and dual review, we selected randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing IPMPs and CPMPs with usual care or waitlist, physical activity, pharmacologic therapy, and psychological therapy in patients with complex acute/subacute pain or chronic nonactive cancer pain. Patients needed to have access to medication support/review, psychological support, and physical function support in programs. Meta-analyses were conducted to improve estimate precision. We classified the magnitude of effects as small, moderate, or large based on predefined criteria. Strength of evidence (SOE) was assessed for the primary outcomes of pain, function, and change in opioid use. Results. We included 57 RCTs; 8 evaluated IPMPs and 49 evaluated CPMPs. Compared with usual care or waitlist, IPMPs were associated with small improvements in pain in the short and intermediate term (SOE: low) and in function in the short term (SOE: moderate), but there were no clear differences at other time points. CPMPs were associated with small improvements in pain immediately postintervention (SOE: moderate) but no differences in the short, intermediate, and long term (SOE: low); for function, improvements were moderate immediately postintervention and in the short term; there were no differences in the intermediate or long term (SOE: low at all time points). CPMPs were associated with small to moderate improvements in function and pain versus pharmacologic treatment alone at multiple time frames (SOE: moderate for function intermediate term; low for pain and function at all other times), and with small improvements in function but no improvements in pain in the short term when compared with physical activity alone (SOE: moderate). There were no differences between CPMPs and psychological therapy alone at any time (SOE: low). Serious harms were not reported, although evidence on harms was insufficient. The mean age was 57 years across IPMP RCTs and 45 years across CPMP RCTs. None of the trials specifically enrolled Medicare beneficiaries. Evidence on factors related to program structure, delivery, coordination, and components that may impact outcomes is sparse and there was substantial variability across studies on these factors. Conclusions. IPMPs and CPMPs may provide small to moderate improvements in function and small improvements in pain in patients with chronic pain compared with usual care. Formal pain management programs have not been widely implemented in the United States for general populations or the Medicare population. To the extent that programs are tailored to patients’ needs, our findings are potentially applicable to the Medicare population. Programs that address a range of biopsychosocial aspects of pain, tailor components to patient need, and coordinate care may be of particular importance in this population.
