Margalef, Jornet Maria. "External and internal factors affecting the metabolism, bioavailability, tissue distribution, and bioactivity of grape seed flavanols." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/318803.
Flavanols, important polyphenolic compounds in fruits and vegetables, improve health by affecting cellular and physiological processes and regular use has been associated with low mortality and low risk of cardiovascular disease. The flavanols that are absorbed in the small intestine are recognized as xenobiotics, and are rapidly conjugated to their glucuronidased, sulfated and methylated forms by phase II enzymes in the small intestine and the liver. The polymeric forms of flavanols reach the colon where they are metabolised to low molecular weight phenolic acids. Subsequently, all absorbed compounds are distributed in tissues and believed to be, the conjugated forms of flavanols, the bioactive ones. Thus, different experimental conditions as amount of flavanols ingested, length of the intake, age, gender or health condition of a host may affect the flavanols metabolism and distribution in tissues thus affecting their functionality. To test this hypothesis, studies in rats that were administered different amounts of an extract from grape seed flavanols under different experimental conditions, and plasma and tissue concentrations were analyzed by HPLC-MS/MS. The results showed that the amount of flavanols and time of intake, age and gender of the host and its pathological condition influence the metabolism and distribution of the flavanols. By an in vivo system-vitro it was also demonstrated that different flavanol metabolites have different activity; particularly in lipid homeostasis. Therefore it can be concluded that all studied external and internal factors influence the metabolism and distribution of flavanols determining physiological activity.

Increasing consumer demand, customer expectations, and change in technology compel industrial corporations, governments and small medium enterprises (SMEs) to adopt Enterprise Application Architecture (EAA). EAA is a system where the applications and software are connected to each other in such a way that new components can easily be integrated with existing components. This study focused on how internal and external factors impact the adoption of EAA for Supply Chain Management (SCM) in SMEs, located in the Capricorn District Municipality. Data is analysed through a statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS version 25). A quantitative methodology with self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from SMEs (SMEs owners and managers). In total, 480 questionnaires were distributed and 310 useable were returned. Cronbach’s Alpha was used to measure reliability. Data validity is obtained through the use of Kolmogorov-Sminorv-Test to ensuring that the questionnaire was based on assumptions from accepted theories as set out in the literature review. From the research findings, it was concluded that the adoption of EAA for SCM in SMEs depends on internal factors, external factors and perceived attitudes towards the adoption of EAA. The managerial implications of the study is based on actual results such as; (a) Internal factors on owners’ characteristics were described as assessment of interior dynamics affecting the enterprise, of which the management have a full control over them, such as employees, business culture, norms and ethics, processes and overall functional activities, (b) The Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) revealed that behavioural measures on Enterprise Resources that depends on speculations about the intensions towards the adoption of EAA for SCM, (c) Compatibility in Diffusion Theory of Innovation ascertains that Technology Acceptance Models need to be linked with relevant Information System Components to have a functional EAA for SCM, (d) The Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) encourages apparent behaviour on control for supplementary forecaster on intentions of employees towards the adoption of EAA for SCM in SMEs, (e) The TPB encourages apparent behaviour on control for supplementary forecaster on intentions of employees towards the adoption of EAA for SCM in SMEs, (f) Consultations with government parastatals or legal representatives of the enterprise would save the SMEs against any unforeseen challenges such as product liabilities, legal costs on lawsuit, tax evasion or avoidance penalties so forth, (g) The Diffusion Theory of Innovation (DTI) proposes that the Perceived Attitudes towards the Adoption of EAA have is affected by behaviour challenges from employees’ personal conduct that affect SCM activities within the SMEs, and (h) The DTI on the intention towards the adoption of EAA for SCM provides the competence in limiting some negative thoughts about the integrative phases or steps limiting the adoption of EAA for SCM. For a developing country like Vietnam, entrepreneurship plays an important role in economy. It not only contributes to create add-value products and services for country, create thousands of jobs every year but also contribute to state budget. Government is promoting program about start up, new venture fund to encourage entrepreneurship, yet it is still a long way to go. And understanding entrepreneurial intention, especially entrepreneurial intention in college student is the key to promote entrepreneurship. But what factors influence intention? The purpose of this study is to investigate the possible antecedents to entrepreneurial behavior with particular attention to personality factors, family background, culture, economy, government policy, globalization and education. This study conduct data analysis based on surveys of 247 Vietnamese college students from Vietnam universities and foreign universities. The findings indicate that participants hold a positive attitude towards entrepreneurship and they show a relative high level of entrepreneurial intention. Confirming prior researches, the findings also indicate that there is a statistically significant relationship among personality factors, family background, culture, economy, government policy, globalization, education and entrepreneurial intention. Personal trait and education have a stronger effect on entrepreneurial intention compare to other factors. Vietnamese college students more likely to communicate with people to build their relationship, which considering as an advantage in entrepreneurship. Vietnamese college students considered entrepreneurship as a way to get their own financial independence. Vietnamese college students expressed a need for more training and education on entrepreneurship to start a new business. They also evaluated the economic and political conditions of home country quite favorable to start own business.

Dementia is a recently-known disease about Cognitive Impairment, which cannot be effectively prevented or cured. The course of Dementia is long, and that makes it different from other diseases focused on physical care. Dementia patients’ mental literacy changes. In the beginning of the course, the symptoms are not easily perceived, and during the middle and the last stage of the course, the patients will not only become gradually incapable of looking after themselves but also become completely forget who they are. This unusual symptom makes family members and caregivers feel tremendously lost and guilty. Besides, the economic burdens it causes on families, the society and the nation cannot be taken lightly. This research is based on the method of document survey, probing and sorting out the issues about exploring Dementia, prevention and treatment, the mental conditions of patients and caregivers, policies, and care models from the different aspects of physiology, psychology and social support. This research also constructs a full view of the research of Dementia in our country by further investigating the references over the last decades. The physiological results suggest building up a good knowledge of Dementia, receiving medical treatment as early as possible, and keeping away from the risk factors of Dementia. Both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments can only slow the progression of this illness or improve its condition. They cannot completely cure Dementia. The related data of Dementia research in the psychological aspect are relatively insufficient. The results suggest deeply investigating the Dementia patients and the caregivers in the future in the psychological aspect. As for social support, there is still room for improvement in care policies and care models. According to this overall survey of Dementia, it is a research including medicine, psychology, sociology, etc. This research can only be a cross-field bridge, providing a reference for the future researchers to study Dementia.

E-commerce can be seen as an important source of competitive advantages for most of enterprises in such a progressively competitive environment nowadays, especially for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Most studies in the past focused mainly on the e-commerce adoption in developed countries. However, recently, researchers have increasingly started to explore and predict factors affect e-commerce adoption among SMEs in developing countries (including Vietnam) since these countries have achieved the steady economy development. The purpose of this study is to examine and deeply understand the influence of internal and external factors on e-commerce adoption intention by SMEs in Vietnam as well as compare these factors with other countries in South-east Asia (Thailand and Malaysia). The distinction into internal and external factors is made to distinguish between organization specific factors and factors that are imposed from outside the organization in the adoption decision and deployment process of e-commerce. This study tested ten hypotheses on factors that influence e-commerce adoption intention with empirical data from a sample of 100 SMEs in Vietnam. The results indicated that the resources of enterprise, the perceived relative advantages, the complexity and compatibility of innovation, the intensity of competition, the pressure from suppliers and buyers, the level of government support, and the national infrastructure have significant impact on e-commerce adoption intention by SMEs in Vietnam.
