Given the prevalence of dual directors who serve simultaneously on the parent as well as the subsidiary board, it is important to examine their functions, a topic largely ignored in the existing literature. Exploring the functions of dual directors highlights equity carve-out objectives other than strategic refocusing. To examine our hypothesis, we first conducted an event study to examine stock market reaction to carve-out decisions. In addition, we compared subsidiaries’ performance after carve-outs between firms with dual directors and their matching firms based on the propensity score. We find evidence that the Japanese stock market reacts positively to the presence of dual directors who hold CEO positions in carve-out subsidiaries, especially when they are relatively young. Additionally, we find that carve-out subsidiaries led by young dual directors tend to outperform their matched counterparts in the long run. In contrast, when dual directors do not hold the CEO position, we find no evidence of the stock market reacting positively to them. The results of this study suggest that young CEOs appointed from the internal labor markets care more about long-term reputation, and can enhance shareholder wealth of both parent and subsidiary firms.

Exploring the relationship between gender differences in labor turnover—which have been linked to male-female wage differentials—and the early twentieth-century development of internal labor markets, this case study suggests that observed gender differences in labor turnover in the twentieth century can be attributed, at least in part, to the specific employment policy decisions of firms. These policies, and the internal labor markets they helped create, directly addressed some of the causes of male turnover but did little to confront the sources (often non-market) of female turnover. The results of this analysis call into question the assumption that the higher rate of female turnover is exogenously determined.

Rapid changes are occurring in the organization of production in advanced industrial societies. These changes result from new technologies, increased competition, and new production techniques. Increased training for workers has been identified as essential for remaining competitive in this rapidly changing environment. Research on the organization of work suggests that training is most likely to occur where workers are organized into internal labor markets that cultivate and retain their skills and is less likely to occur in organizations which rely on secondary labor markets. Our study of 20 manufacturing plants supports the hypothesis that approaches to training are strongly differentiated by the division between enterprises with and without internal labor markets. Training for advanced technologies and contemporary production techniques appears to grow out of existing institutionalized internal labor markets. Where such labor markets do not exist, training is less likely to occur or is superficial in nature. The effects of increased training thus do not appear to have “trickled down” into production systems employing less-skilled labor. Institutional strategies associated with a reliance on a low-wage labor force create barriers to the extension of training into new sectors of production. The effects of increased training thus may be quite localized and may serve to increase rather than diminish existing divisions in the labor force.

This paper presents a historical explanation of the evolution of labor market structure and wage differentials in the California canning industry. Beginning in the late 1800s, the power of craft labor within the canneries combined with the growth of a canned goods market to stimulate mechanization, which in turn raised the cost of a casual labor force and led to nascent labor market structure. Unionization in the 1930s, itself a partial product of previous mechanization, reshaped and institutionalized informal internal labor markets. Wages both within the canneries and between canning and agriculture responded to the evolving institutions and structural characteristics of the cannery labor market.

Abstract. Four studies investigating labor market influences on personality scale scores of job applicants are presented. The first three studies examined whether or not job applicants from internal vs. external labor markets scored similarly on multi-scale personality inventories used for personnel selection. Across three samples, data from external job applicants (total N = 11,147) and internal job applicants (total N = 10,468) for managerial positions indicated that on average external job applicants scored slightly higher (by an average of .10 to .20 standard deviation units). A variety of control variables had no influence on comparisons. The fourth study examined integrity test scores of job applicants in a buyer’s labor market (selection ratio = .03). Job applicants (N = 1,002) in this labor market scored .52 SD units above general job applicant norms. The variability for this group was markedly smaller. There may be small, but consistent, labor supply and demand influences on personality scale responses among job applicants.
