Abstract ABSTRACT The Dublin Art(s) Club, which operated in the Irish capital from 1886 to 1898, offers an intriguing case study for modes of artistic networks and cultural exchange between Ireland and Britain in the closing decades of the nineteenth century. Despite this, the history of the Club has been little explored in historiography to date, often confused with other ventures by artists in the city. Examining the rise and fall of the Dublin Art(s) Club, along with its members and activities, this article retrieves its history and posits that it offers an example of an aspect of art in Ireland which was conspicuous for its cosmopolitan outlook and active engagement with the wider British art world, which then spanned across both islands. The history of the Dublin Art(s) Club poses a challenge to the extant scholarship of this period in Irish art history, which to date has been largely understood to be focused on themes of national identity, the cultural revival, and artists who left Ireland to train in Belgium and France. This article posits that by re-engaging with the activities of art clubs and societies, a more complex reading of artistic life in Victorian Dublin can emerge.

The analysis was performed while participating and doing research in a project “Villages on the Move Go (VOMGO)” which is focused on one of the main objectives of EU sport policy: promote awareness and healthenhancing physical activity (HEPA). Motivation is widely-researched in sport psychology and other fields. Motivation for participation in sport is an important object of sport research, therefore it is important to apply reliable research tools. Aim of the research – to identify trends of “Fire Souls” motivational factors related to sport club establishment. Method. This paper analyses the results of open-ended questions, which are presented in quantitative terms (descriptive statistics) and statistical correlation analysis. Participants. The study involved 43 persons who are strongly related with the activities of sport clubs. They have established these clubs and are currently the enthusiasts of these clubs, as they represent them by participating or managing their activities, organizing various activities at the national and / or international level. In the “Villages on the Move Go” project and in this article, they are named as “Fire Souls”. Fire Souls are representing seven European countries: Finland, Lithuania, Cyprus, Slovenia, Hungary, Belgium and Portugal. All of the “Fire Souls” involved in this study were experts with extensive experiences in sport and physical activity. Results. The most frequently mentioned motivational factors for “Fire Souls” to run the sport clubs were participation in sport activities from childhood and search for innovative sport activities or benefits to the community. “Fire Souls” who once volunteered at the sport clubs practiced winter sports. The factor “personal life changes” is related to activities with vulnerable groups, implication of the sport education is related to gymnastics, acrobatics, active lifestyle and achievements are related with cycling. The factor “search for the innovative sport activities for the community” correlates with dancing, search for the innovative sport activities for the community is related with the occupation as physical education teacher. The most common motivational factors for men and women “Fire Souls” are participation in sport activities from childhood, search for innovative sport activities and benefits to the community. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors were almost indistinguishable from “Fire Souls” experience in sport activities. Conclusions. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors of “Fire Souls” determine sport and active leisure activities for individuals seeking professional and nonprofessional athletic performance, contributing to the promotion of public health and quality of life.

Abstract Young people with disabilities participate in sports to a lesser extent than other adolescents. That physical activity has positive effects on young people are understood. Sports clubs are identified as potential environments for physical activity. The reasons why young people with disabilities participate to a lower extent in organized sport is complex and barriers can be deriving from many different levels. However, barriers have been studied more than what can facilitate participation in organized sport. Therefor the aim of this study is to increase the understanding of how sports clubs include children and adolescents with disabilities in their activities. The results of this systematic search are presented using the three research questions: What are the characteristics of the sports clubs that include young people with disabilities?; How are the young people with disabilities included in sports clubs’ activities?; and finally Why are young people with disabilities included in the sports activities?. A vision must be to go from adapting physical activity for disabled persons to adapting physical activity for all people, because the diversity of people’s reasons for doing sports, their differing backgrounds and their uniqueness all demand it. This will result in more people doing sports for longer in life.

Daily life astronomy activity in nurseries and after school care clubs has many aspects to improve children’s and educator’s scientific views and skills. Though these activities are casual and ordinary ones for many nurseries and after school care clubs, aspects of science education are found in many ways reflecting the activity referring to the UNAWE Evaluation Guide. This indicates that if we intend to promote science education in nurseries and preschools, we do not necessarily have to introduce new activity, but that the formative assessment to pick up science in daily life activities is sufficient. This can encourage educators to be selfconfident in implementing science education. The improvement of selfconfidence is observed in teacher-training students of primary and preschool education during university class when they learned that they already had skills for daily life astronomy education. Thus, daily life astronomy education is not only an interesting and exciting activity for children but it also contributes to improving the educator’s confidence and hence their skills of science education.

The purpose of the article: to analyze the activities of sports clubs and the development of physical culture movement in Podillia during the period between the two world wars, to trace the evolution of Soviet policy on sports industry in Kamianets-Podilskyi and Podillia, to reveal the participation of athletes from Podillia in all-Ukrainian and regional competitions. Research methods: comparative-historical, problem-historiographic, systemic. Main results: for organization of sports and physical culture movement in the USSR the first sports society “Dynamo” was created. It consisted of police officers, the GPU and administrative bodies. “Dynamo” branches began to operate in Kamianets-Podilskyi, Proskuriv, Volochysk, Sataniv, Stara Ushytsia, and other settlements. In the second half of the 1920s, sports clubs for Soviet employees, food workers, educators, and railway workers were created in Kamianets-Podilskyi. Physical education classes started at city labor schools, technical schools, and institutes under the program of the People’s Commissariat for Education of the Ukrainian SSR. Communist functionaries attached great political importance to sports work, opposing it, in their opinion. For this purpose, the “backward” Ukrainian peasant culture in rural areas began to work district (and later – regional) training courses for instructors of physical culture collectives in collective farms. After the formation of Kamianets-Podilskyi region, regional collective farm sports days began to be held annually. Several stages can be distinguished in the history of physical culture and sports in Podillia during the period under study: the beginning of the 1920s – at this time the local authorities took control of all the sports centers of the region, the activities of non-communist organizations and clubs were prohibited; the second half of the 1920s – the first half of the 1930s. Sports training was considered an important part of preparing young people for military service. “Dynamo” and “Spartak” societies did a lot to popularize sports among the residents of Kamianets-Podilskyi and the entire Podillia. Their athletes were successful in All-Ukrainian competitions. The second half of the 1930s was characterized by the creation of a children’s sports school in the city, the organization of a wide network of clubs and physical education centers in the countryside. Similar tendencies are characteristic of totalitarian societies, which often contrasted sports and spiritual life. Therefore, it is no coincidence that, along with the growth of sports schools, circles, and clubs, churches were closed, and many famous Ukrainian writers, poets, ethnographers, representatives of the humanitarian sphere were repressed. Sports competitions were constantly covered in the media, and famous athletes become idols of young people. They begin to create the image of real representatives of the “working people” from them, those who had to be looked up to. Practical significance: the materials of the article can be used for studying the history of sports life in Ukraine in general and Podillya in particular, for writing monographs, articles, special courses on the history of Soviet everyday life. In addition, the work can be useful for researchers studying the history of certain sports. The originality of the study is due to the unbiased consideration and analysis of the sources used (archival documents, scientific papers and journalism). Type of article: research.

This study aims to assess the functional status, quality of life, and physical activity (PA) of the elderly who are members of senior social clubs. The study included 63 participants (65–95 years old) who were members of a seniors club. The study utilized the following instruments: Barthel scale, Lawton’s scale of Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL), WHO Quality of Life-BREF questionnaire, author’s survey questionnaire containing questions about the type of PA. Duration of membership in the senior club has a statistically significant effect on Barthel index score (F = 19.68, p < 0.001) and Lawton’s IADL scale results (F = 17.59, p < 0.001). All four domains of life quality were strongly related to the duration of attendance to senior clubs. Participants who attended the senior club for more than five years were more likely to report a longer PA duration than participants who attended the senior club for less than 5 years (Chi2 = 25.84, p < 0.001). Attendance to senior social clubs has a strong positive impact on functional status, quality of life, and PA of the elderly. Moreover, our study identified numerous social-demographic factors associated with PA, quality of life, and functional status of senior club members.

Objective: Health promotion in sports clubs is receiving increased attention, but its benefits have not been widely evaluated for two reasons: (1) the difficulty in measuring ecological approach outcomes and (2) the existing literature having focused more on coaches’ efficiency rather than on health promotion. This article analyses the relationship between coaches’ health promotion activities, sports experience and health among adult sports participants. Design: A cross-sectional study using self-reported measurement among 204 adult sports participants ( Mage = 49.05). A questionnaire measuring demographics, coaches’ health promotion activities (healthy lifestyle, substance use and respect for oneself and others), sports experience (enjoyment, subjective vitality) and health (perceived health and quality of life, self-esteem) was completed either before or after a training session. Setting: Sixteen sports clubs in France Method: Multilevel analyses were used to evaluate the relationships between health promotion, sports experience and health outcomes, while t-tests compared differences between male adult and youth samples. Results: Adult perceptions of coaches’ health promotion activities were linked to enjoyment, perceived health and subjective vitality. The topic ‘healthy lifestyle’ was related to enjoyment and perceived health among adults. The topic ‘respect for oneself and others’ was related to self-esteem. Conclusion: Adult and youth perceptions of coaches’ health promotion activities vary and are linked to different health outcomes. More research is needed to better identify the benefits of health promotion in sports clubs for sports participants, including longitudinal studies to explore causal relationships between variables.

This study focuses on the engagement of children and youth in their communities and the ways they are included in and excluded from community life. Using a content analysis of a small town United States newspaper over a one-year period, examples of engagement were identified and classified into 12 categories: programs, clubs and special events; fundraising and community service; business and community support; participation in community events; school events; athletic and other performances; employment; involvement in local planning and decision making; serving as a community representative; visibility and recognition; criminal activity and accidents; and use of public space. Examples of community exclusion were identified as well. Young people were engaged primarily through activities that were adult-directed or supervised, or organized through schools, churches, and youth clubs. There was little involvement in local planning, decision making, or activism. Some evidence existed of peer teaching, leadership, and self-initiated activities, as well as intentional efforts by adults to give youth a greater voice in community activities. Implications include several ethical issues regarding the role of young people in community life, particularly young children, and the need for greater awareness on the part of communities of the contributions young people can make.

This article explores the constraints to mainstream sports participation of children with disability in community sports clubs and schools through their lived experiences and the perceptions of parents, teachers, coaches, and club officials. It does so by administering an open-ended survey instrument to a sample of participants recruited from schools, sporting facilities, and disability organizations in New South Wales and Victoria, Australia. The data were analysed through a transdisciplinary conceptual framework which brought together the social model of disability (disability studies) with the leisure constraints framework (leisure studies), which have been encouraged by both academics and practitioners. The findings identified ableist and disablist practices, creating an enabled understanding of the facilitators for social inclusion. Participants perceived that interrelated intrapersonal, interpersonal, and structural constraints excluded children from their desired sporting activities. Through applying the social model of disability to the leisure constraints framework, the findings and discussion showed that a great deal of what had been considered intrapersonal constraints of the child with disability could be reinterpreted as interpersonal and structural constraints through enabling socially inclusive practices. The implications are that a social model of disability brings a new social lens to understanding constraints to sport participation for children with disability and can produce effective strategies for inclusion in sport at schools and community sport clubs.

Abstract Nowadays, contextual dynamics of society require new understandings of leisure available to the individual. The manner in which he intends to spend his free time may affect the quality of life, beneficial or not. We intend to identify the preferences of the population over 25 years in Iași city, for leisure practicing sport and physical activities in specialized institutions. The sample survey included 150 citizens of Iasi (75 male, 75 female), distributed by age ranges: 25-34; 35-44; 45-54; 55-64 years. They answered a questionnaire with 14 questions that focused customer profile (demographics: age, sex), the behavior of consumption (frequency of practicing sport and physical leisure activities, frequency of practicing sport and physical activities in sports clubs, preferences for various sport and physical activities). The results suggest that sport and physical activities play an important place in free time, preferences turning to programs and services offered by sports clubs and associations in the city. There are gender differences regarding: leisure sports (men devote more time to, but also include several sports activities in their free time than women; also, young people pay more attention to sports activities compared to subjects other intervals age); in sports (even if there are a number of common sports), the reasons underlying their practice (women prevail desire to lose weight and men wish to keep fit). The understanding that free time is becoming shorter andshorter and precious determines behavior directed towards ensuring the individual benefits: better health condition, relaxation and satisfaction.

AbstractHitherto empirical research provides insight on particular dimensions or aspects thereof, but analyses that include diverse determinants of the physical activity are scarcer. The aim of the research was to examine the profile of adults who engage in sport activity, using a multi-layer, socio-ecological approach. Combined database: The Social Diagnosis 2015, The Statistics Poland 2014, and the Orliki 2012 was applied. The resulting sample consists of 8,361 adult respondents aged 25–70 years. Sport activity and sport clubs’ membership were measured as dependent variables. According to the Bronfenbrenner’s layered model number of outcome variables were described. While being consistent with fundamental facts known from the literature (e.g. significance of age, education, family, social networks and cultural aspects, the results point to a heterogeneity in determining sport activity. Firstly, women and men differ qualitatively – the set of characteristics important for sport activity is different. For example, while minor health issues seem to instigate activity of women, for men they are rather negatively related. Secondly, different factors are relevant for initiating the activity than for sustaining it. Furthermore, sport activity is rather positively related to other activities related to social life or to the life-long learning. This suggests that a substitution effect, in terms of time, is less important than the general tendency to be engaged in different aspects of life. Lastly, active membership of sports clubs is not only rare, but also qualitatively differs from sports activity in terms of socio-ecological profile of the participants. The obtained results emphasize the need to create and implement nuanced and varied policies to support increase in physical activity in modern societies. Traditional, ‘hard’ measures like providing physical (facilities) or organisational (sports clubs) infrastructure seem to have limited effectiveness.

Soft-skill development is increasingly gaining importance in secondary education, and extra-curricular activities are an important component of the curriculum to develop them. The purpose of this study was to investigate the state and effectiveness of extracurricular activities (ECAs) in fostering the development of soft skills among students in a selected public secondary school in the Lushoto district of Tanzania. The study had two objectives, namely, to identify types of existing extracurricular activities in selected public secondary schools and to verify the availability of extracurricular activities’ facilities and infrastructure that would enhance the development of soft skills among students in the district. This study employed a mixed-methods research approach and a convergent design. We sampled a total of 298 respondents, including 276 students, 15 extracurricular activities teachers, 5 heads of school, and 2 ward education officers. The research tools included questionnaires, an interview guide, a focus group discussion, and an observation guide. The data was analysed through descriptive and thematic analysis. The findings revealed that the kinds of extracurricular activities practiced in visited secondary schools can be grouped into four categories, namely: sports and games; academic; production-related activities, including beekeeping and gardening; and social clubs. It was revealed that facilities and infrastructure for these activities were very limited. The study concluded that the kinds of extracurricular activities offered in the secondary schools in the district are inadequate for students, which leads them to complete secondary education without adequate soft skills for them to start an independent life. This leads them to fail to seize opportunities around them with the current high unemployment rate and turn to criminal behaviour. Extracurricular activities such as sports and games, debating clubs, farming activities, and subject clubs are important aspects in the development of a student and should be a priority for practice in public secondary schools nationwide. The implications of the findings for future curriculum reviews and school supervision are discussed.

Although federal funding has been provided to add mentoring to youth development programs for decades, we still lack knowledge about the impacts of mentoring on youth outcomes. This research seeks to fill a gap by documenting youth outcomes from an enhanced mentoring approach for urban Boys and Girls Clubs (BGC) in the Southeastern United States delivered by paid staff who serve as mentors through group activities and 1:1 interactions with youth. We perform logistic regressions of secondary data from a cohort of BGCs to understand the relationships between enhanced mentoring and youth outcomes related to program retention, behaviors, and academics. We find the presented approach has a significant relationship with retention with those mentored being 1.92 times more likely to return the following program year. Mentored youth also experienced higher expectations from staff and were less likely to be involved in a physical fight with peers.

The comparative study analyses the relationship between sports culture and the COVID-19 crisis based on the case studies of fan groups in Estonia and Belarus. Sports and the COVID-19 pandemic are closely interconnected. In the Estonian case, the official analysis results testify that during the first COVID-19 wave in spring 2020 the most affected region in the country was Saaremaa Island, where the virus was literally blown into the air by fan bugles at the international volleyball competition held on 4–5 March 2020. Belarusian sports events did not have such dramatic repercussions, but there were also coronavirus hotbeds in several popular football clubs. The two countries had different approaches to sports events. In Estonia, as in most European countries, all sports competitions and games were banned from 12 March to 17 May 2020, during the state of emergency, but in Belarus, normal sports life continued (except in the cases when there was a COVID-19 hotbed in a sports club). While Estonian football fans were forced to stay home and wait for the games to continue, Belarusian fans, unlike the rest of the world, enjoyed championship games and stadium life. The unique situation in Belarus drew the attention of world football fans to Belarusian football. During the pandemic, most fan activities took place online, making social media the most appropriate environment for this joint study. In this article, we compare the activities of Estonian and Belarusian football clubs during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and analyse how fan activities continued on Facebook. We also describe the general situation in the field of sports during the pandemic. Our analysis shows that the pandemic not only changed the communication pattern between clubs and fans (from real life to the virtual world), but also affected the ratio of parasocial and social interaction. Despite the different situations in the two countries, there was a tendency for football players and club representatives to interact with fans more actively than usual. New forms of fandom required new creative solutions and ways of communicating, which involved humour, (audio)visual media and an emphasis on positive agenda.

Young Farmers‘ Clubs have their own history in Lithuania. They functioned actively in interwar Lithuania. After restoration of Lithuania‘s independence, such farmer clubs have existed for years in the regions of Rokiškis and Pasvalys. Although currently there is no high demand for agriculture careers, young farmers‘ clubs have not lost their relevance. On the contrary, they provide especially advantageous circumstances for youth education according to challenges faced by modern versatile educational process. The author‘s insights are based on the experience and results got while working with primary school students in the young farmers‘ club. The summary of the experience how creatively teachers realize the content of the club‘s activities according to the principles of General programmes of Primary and Basic education (2009) is provided in the article. Working with the partners (Regional Farmers‘ Associations, Agricultural Services and Chamber of Agriculture of the Republic of Lithuania) the relationship between club members and the closest natural, sociocultural and economic environment is established, educational programmes not only enrich students‘ experience developing valuable attitude towards the native country, its heritage, as well as the variety of the world, but also raise students‘ awareness of fragility of various forms of life and develop ecological self-consciousness. Students analyse natural materials, observe processes in nature, thus they use theoretical knowledge practically checking information provided in different sources. Evaluating the results students can easily notice the relationship between cause and effect and improve their general competency. Knowledge gained in a practical way nourishes mind, body and emotions, it is transferred to the abstract level. Club members harmoniously share activities despite the difference in age, learning capacity and style , both genders and special needs. Young Farmers‘ Club activities contain a lot of space for interdisciplinary integration. Enterprising activities are revealed for students participating in local and national fairs. The major factor is that there are children who highly enjoy these activities. Keywords: general competency, youth education, Young Farmers‘ Club.

ABSTRACTTransportation is critical to older adults’ ability to participate in social activities in their community. We examined the association between modes of transportation and restrictions in social activity (i.e.visiting with others, religious attendance, clubs and organised activities, and going out for enjoyment), with particular attention to the moderating effects of economic vulnerability. We used logistic regression to analyse data from 7,197 community-dwelling older adults from the 2011 wave of the National Health and Aging Trends Study, a representative sample of adults aged 65 and over in the United States of America. Economic vulnerability moderated the association between transportation mode and social activity restrictions. Findings suggest that even when economically vulnerable older adults have access to driving, walking or public transit, they may be at a higher risk for social exclusion than their counterparts with more financial resources.

The present study focuses on the role, importance and complementarity of science and technology extracurricular activities. The research is based on the analysis of the students’ views on how the science activities should be conducted in Children’s Palaces and Clubs, namely which topics should be explored and how the activities should be organised. An online questionnaire was designed for data collection (N=3945). The research design included opinions from specialized literature. Thus, the success of the extracurricular activities increases in direct proportion to the approached topics, didactic strategies and the community involvement – parents, schools – with relevant experiences in carrying out the activities (Albulescu & Catalano, 2019). And as far as the organization of this type of activity is concerned, the following should be considered: the pupils’ age level characteristics, their psychological needs, and the specific inclinations and interests (Cucoº, 2017). The science and technology activities include the curricular areas involved in a coherent learning paradigm, which is based on practical applications that are used in everyday life (Albulescu, 2014). The current legislation also supports an innovative way of carrying out extracurricular activities. The findings show us the important role of the technical and scientific extracurricular activities, which along formal education help to improve learners’ results, furthermore, they are complementary for the development of competences in science and technology. This study helps in the analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the extracurricular activities, and the results tell us about the needs of the pupils and to what extent the use of the pupil-centered educational strategy will help to achieve better results in education and reduce school dropout. This is a confirmation that complex educational objectives require the combination of curricular with extra-curricular activities (Bocoş & Jucan, 2017).

This paper examines how domestic and leisure practices of Siberian town-dwellers in the early 1920s were influenced by the state anti-religious policy. By examining state activities, the paper shows an enormous expansion of state intervention in the sphere of private life of the Yenissei province town-dwellers, their leisure activities and domestic practices. The participation of Siberian town-dwellers in the work of clubs, societies, lectures and new “proletarian” holidays became the mechanisms for secularizing their daily lives. The construction of the “new communist way of life” was underway and the state secularization policy became an additional catalyst for changes in domestic practices and a cause of family conflicts. By focusing on the above-mentioned period and using publications of the local leading periodical “Krasnoyarsk Worker” published in the Yenissei province since the year 1905 until recently, the article demonstrates the tendencies of changes in everyday life of the Yenissei province town-dwellers targeted by the state anti-religious policy.

Although engaging in evening naps and extracurricular activities are popular among Japanese high school students, the associations between these behaviors and daytime sleep problems were unclear. A questionnaire on daily life and sleeping habits was administered to 1314 high school students, aged between 15–17 years. The respondents were categorized by their after-school napping habits (did not nap, napped 1–2 days/week, napped ≥3 days/week), and their extracurricular activities (no activity, cultural club, athletic club). The mean nocturnal sleep duration on weekdays (± standard deviation (SD)) was 390 ± 56 min. This was significantly shorter in those students with a higher number of days/week spent napping (p < 0.001), and slightly longer for those in the athletic club (p < 0.001). Sleep problems—including subjective insufficient sleep, excessive sleepiness during class ≥3 days/week, and falling asleep during class ≥3 days/week—were reported by 64%, 55%, and 33% of respondents, respectively. A multiple logistic regression analysis showed significantly higher risks for excessive sleepiness among students taking naps ≥3 days/week, and who belonged to athletic clubs. In addition to those factors, students in cultural clubs revealed significantly higher risks for falling asleep during classes. Future studies are required to decrease daytime sleep problems associated with evening naps and extracurricular activities among high school students.

The short-lived Véloce-club bordelais (1878-92) was one of France’s leading Belle époque cycling clubs. Although provincial, it was influential in developing cycle-sport nationally, including creating Bordeaux-Paris (1891), one of the founding races of cycling as a developing sport. Study of the internal life of the club shows how its social and sporting identity negotiated centrifugual and centripital forces within the institutional framework of associationism. Searching for the best organisational model for cycling sport and associativity in a period of rapid change in French sport and society, the club was refounded on a number of occasions but, despite many achievements, ultimately collapsed. As an early pioneer club, the Véloce-club bordelais (VCB) was partly a victim of its own success: having struggled to create a new ecosystem of cycling as sport and sociability, changing interests of Bordeaux’s social elite in new, motorised pursuits, or to cycle-touring rather than racing, removed the raison d’être of the club. The club’s demise subsequently created space in the sports-scape for new cycling clubs and other sports associations. Detailed analysis of club activities, internal organisation and management, membership and finances is enabled by its symbiotic relationship with the Véloce-Sport newspaper, which published and discussed much of the club’s sporting, social and administrative life. Close interpretation of the VCB’s brief but intense history shows how sporting sociability intersected with local government, politics and society and how the internal functioning of sports associations in France’s Belle époque demonstrates the significance of sports clubs as part of civil society.

Object. The article considers the issue of cultural and leisure activities of club youth centers of pedagogical higher educational institutions. The structure and types of leisure, forms of youth clubs` work are analyzed. Methods. The following methods were used when writing the article and searching for the material: analysis, synthesis, comparison. Results. One of the urgent problems of cultural and leisure activities of club youth centers of pedagogical higher educational institutions is the organization of youth leisure. Unfortunately, due to the socio-economic difficulties of society, the lack of adequate number of cultural institutions and insufficient attention to the organization of youth leisure, the development of non-institutional forms of youth leisure is most widespread. A new type of youth club is a qualitatively different social formation free from political layers, formalism, and strict regulation of internal life. This institution should help meet the growing interest of young people in their history, cultural and artistic origins, household traditions. The use of free time by young people is a kind of indicator of their culture, the range of spiritual needs and interests of a particular individual of young person or social group. As part of free time, leisure attracts young people by its lack of regulation and voluntary choice of its various forms, democracy, emotional color, the ability to combine physical and intellectual activities, creative and contemplative, production and play. Yu. Striltsov, A. Zharkov, V. Chizhikov, V. Kovshar, T. Kiselyova, Yu. Krasilnikov made a significant contribution to the scientific analysis of the theory and practice of cultural and leisure activities. Stylistic and structural features of free time are reflected in research F. Vidanova, V. Dimova, I. Evteeva, L. Kogan, V. Pichi, A. Shchavel. Such scientists as I. Andreeva, N. Golubkova, N. Litovska, L. Shvydka are working on the problems of youth subculture functioning and cultural socialization. Sociological studies of the spiritual young people needs in the field of leisure in the Ukrainian scientists woks I. Bekh, I. Zyazyun, G. Sagach, I. Stepanenko, P. Shcherban, J. Yuzvak are carefully analyzed. The youth club provides an opportunity to provide leisure as a means of entertainment and relaxation of individual and group stress; recreation as a means of replenishing psychophysical forces, restoring creative potential; compensation as a means of involvement in personally significant cultural values; socialization as a means of involvement in informal social processes and structures; self-actualization as a means of embodying individual creative interests, as well as self-development and self-realization of personal growth in culturally significant areas of society. Conclusions. So, today, given the rising spiritual young people`s needs, increasing the level of their education, culture, the most characteristic feature of youth leisure is the growing share of spiritual forms and ways of spending free time, combining entertainment, information, opportunity to create and learn new things. Such «synthetic» forms of leisure organization have become youth interest clubs, amateur associations, family clubs, art and technical clubs, discos, and youth cafe clubs.

In the first post-war years, in the Koszalin region there was a multi-million migration related to the settlement of the so-called Recovered Territories. Rapid development and settlement of the largest number of Poles in the area became one of the most important tasks after the end of hostilities. It should be noted that the population that came to the so-called The Recovered Territories, built from scratch, living conditions and certain areas of social life, including cultural and sporting life. Among the settlers who arrived in Koszalin, there were pre-war sports activists, players, members of associations and clubs who, apart from professional activities, took up the organization of sport. In a new, uneasy situation, Poles’ environments organized their cultural and sporting lives without closing to the emerging and mixed communities. The first organizational units of physical culture in Central Pomerania were sports clubs, which primarily formed at selected professional groups, the most active were groups of railwaymen, militiamen and craftsmen. Sport in this area was more than just competition or “fun for the body and soul”, it also served to integrate the settled population. This applied not only to rivals competing with each other, but also fans watching sporting events, which became a way of spending time and an opportunity to celebrate together. Not only, however, they also influenced the formation of social bonds. Cooperative works for the development of sport formed the foundation of a new social life.

Physical activity is one of the most important means of forming strong health of a child in the conditions of modern school. Currently, after-school sports activities are an integral part of life of the majority of school children. The objective of this study is to assess the state of posture of Moscow primary school children who attend and do not attend various sports clubs after school. The results of the study have shown that the most favorable sports for forming correct posture in children are figure skating, artistic gymnastics, and acrobatics. In these groups, the number of children with incorrect posture is the lowest, at 6.6% and 25%, respectively. Children involved in sambo and judo have disorders in 39.9% of cases. A high total percentage of posture disorders has been identified in groups of children engaged in martial arts, such as karate, aikido, and boxing (64.5%), sport dance (78.8%), and game sports and swimming (83.1% and 83.2%, respectively). The data obtained in the study allow us to talk about useful and harmful physical activities for the posture of primary school children. However, the largest number of children with posture disorders (96.6%) has been recorded in the group of children who do not participate in sports clubs and whose physical activity is limited only to school physical education lessons.

Social behaviors are associated with health outcomes in later life. The authors examined relationships among social and physical activities and health in a lifespan sample of adults (N = 771) drawn from the Louisiana Healthy Aging Study (LHAS). Four age groups were compared: younger (21–44 years), middle-aged (45–64 years), older (65–84 years), and oldest-old adults (85–101 years). Linear regression analyses indicated that physical activity, hours spent outside of the house, and social support were significantly associated with selfreported health, after controlling for sociodemographic factors. Number of clubs was significantly associated with objective health status, after controlling for sociodemographic factors. These data indicate that social and physical activities remain important determinants of self-perceived health into very late adulthood. Implications of these data for current views on successful aging are discussed.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyse active level of lifestyle among asthmatic patients and their participation on physical activities and sports. Another goal was to find out whether asthmatic patients are limited when performing physical activities or sports because of the medical condition and how physically active lifestyle influences the medical condition and whether it takes part on improving their quality of life. Methods: A survey was used for data collection. To gather information, our own survey form was developed – a self-reported tool which clinically compares and measures physical activity (such as other standardised and international forms: International Physical Activity Questionnaire and St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire). A questionnaire was distributed to people working with asthmatic patients, to different sports clubs and among university students. The research group consists of 125 respondents. The obtained data was processed into tables and charts via Microsoft Office Word 2016, Microsoft Office Excel 2016 and SPSS program. A verification of hypotheses was carried out according to the results of the survey and the independence test - chi-squared test. Results: According to the chosen data processing methods, the limitation of asthmatic patients in physical activities or sports was not confirmed – physical activities on regular basis perform 100 respondents (80%), 69 respondents (55.2%) stated no limitation within physical activities due to asthma and e.g., in patients with most severe asthma were 66.7% (n = 4) of them without limitation when being active. The positive effect of regular physical activity on reducing clinical manifestations of the asthma, on reducing medication doses and also on improving the quality of life of patients has been confirmed. Physical therapy has proven to be effective, but more emphasis is needed on educating asthmatics by healthcare professionals about this treatment method.

Although coopetition (simultaneous cooperation and competition) has been recognised as a positive driver of performance, the complexities of this association remain under-researched. Consequently, grounded in resource-based theory and the relational view, the purpose of this current study is to examine the moderating roles of inter-firm conflict and competitive intensity in the coopetition–sales performance relationship.Design/methodology/approachAfter undertaking 25 field interviews, survey data were collected from 151 non-mainstream sporting clubs in New Zealand. This setting was ideal, since it hosts high-degrees of cooperativeness and competitiveness. After assessing the statistical data for all major robustness checks (including common method variance and endogeneity bias), the hypothesised and control paths were tested through a hierarchical regression analysis.FindingsCoopetition had a positive relationship with sales performance, but inter-firm conflict yielded a negative interaction effect. Surprisingly, this link was positively moderated by competitive intensity.Practical implicationsUnder-resourced entrepreneurs (like those in many small sports clubs) should consider cooperating with their competitors, as these strategies can assist them to improve their sales performance. However, they should be careful when engaging in such activities due to the considerable risk that rival firms could behave opportunistically, which might harm their performance. That being said, owner-managers are advantaged if they operate in sectors where there are lots of competitors because there is increased scope to collaborate with “complementary” and trustworthy rivals that can help them to achieve mutually-beneficial outcomes. Indeed, sporting governing bodies (including those that operate on a non-profit basis) should encourage their members to engage in coopetition due to these positive financial consequences.Originality/valueThis investigation contributes to the extant literature by evaluating the competitive forces affecting the link between coopetition and sales performance. Specifically, new evidence emerges on the circumstances where coopetition is (and is not) a performance-enhancing entrepreneurial strategy. Further, this investigation provides unique insights regarding coopetition among non-mainstream sporting clubs, adding new knowledge to the sports entrepreneurship literature. Moreover, by infusing resource-based theory with the relational view, stronger arguments feature how owner-managers can navigate the paradoxical forces that drive coopetition activities. This study ends with several practitioner implications, alongside a series of limitations and avenues for future research.

There has been a hotspot in sports industry these days that is becoming more and more wide-spread in sports organizations and among managers, namely CSR, that is corporate social responsibility. In the life of geographical regions, towns or villages, professional football clubs play a crucial role. Consequently, clubs tend to take responsibility for these communities in return for their support: whether it is the local population or the authorities, other businesses or the environment, they are ready to stand up for good causes. Nowadays sports centres with their regular events have a significant effect on the environment either regionally or globally. That is the reason why it has become vital in the management of sports facilities to respect environmental principles when designing and using sports facilities and to avoid producing pollution that could harm and deteriorate the environment. The aim of our study was on the one hand, to present the definitional and theoretical evolution of CSR, than the CSR concept in sport, special regard to environmental protection. On the other hand, to analyze what kind of CSR related issues do football clubs (Real Madrid C. F. – RM, Borussia Dortmund – BVB) and how they are addressing issues of environmental sustainability in the context of CSR. According to RM and BVB, we can say that they really try to do efforts to responsible behavior and environmental protection. They have special respect for the society and took big step to use different environmental management tools. It was easy to find information, reports and case studies about these activities. In Australia, local government plays an essential role in emergency management, although not a provider of emergency services. The role of supporting emergency services and the community both during and after emergencies has been a traditional role. Added to this is an increasing responsibility as the focal point for the conduct of local mitigation using risk analysis, prioritization, and treatment under the methodology of emergency risk management. This role is part of a shift in the emphasis of emergency management in Australia away from the strong focus on emergencies and the emergency services, towards an emphasis on the sustainability of the community and its life in the context of the risk of loss posed by natural and other hazards. Models of municipal emergency risk management planning are presented to assist municipalities to connect or even integrate their emergency management planning processes with other similar community safety activities such as crime and injury prevention.

Abstract Ho A Mei, one of the earliest young Chinese to receive a thorough English education in the colony of Hong Kong, spent ten difficult years from 1858 to 1868, striving to make a fortune in the gold rush Australian colony of Victoria. Here he learnt much about modern business practices and ventures and also protested against the racial hostility that the Chinese encountered. Eventually after his retreat back to Hong Kong and Guangdong Province, he was successful partly because of his experiences in the advanced capitalist economy of colonial Victoria. This led him to move beyond the mercantile enterprises and property buying, which were key activities of many Hong Kong Chinese businessmen, into the areas of modern financial and telegraph services and mining ventures. He also spoke out frequently in a provocative manner against the colonial government over injustices and discrimination that limited the rights and freedom of the Chinese in Hong Kong. During the 1880s and 1890s, he was a recognized Chinese community leader, one whose assertiveness on behalf of Chinese interests was not always appreciated by the Hong Kong authorities.

The article examines the early 20th century historical source base on the Siberian student community of the pre-revolutionary period. It argues that the sources complex of the period is heterogeneous in structure, nature, and content. It determines that the life of Siberian students, as depicted in the early 20th century sources from state archives, was recorded principally in the following aspects: approved and regulated university activities (admission, scholarships, training, participation in registered student organizations, fraternities, academic clubs, etc.) and oppositional, political, ideological activities of students prohibited by both central and local authorities and, in some cases, by university administration that followed the instructions. More details on pressing issues of student life (poverty, employment issues, etc.) unfold in the periodicals. There was a series of analytical and op-ed articles in the Sibirskii student (‘Siberian student’) and Sibirskie voprosy (‘Siberian issues’) magazines, in the Sibirskaya zhizn' (‘Siberian life’) and Utro Sibiri (‘The morning of Siberia’), and some others. The article shows that, apart from poverty and domestic issues, the informal student life, as lived outside educational institutions and politics (that is, love, friendship, attitude toward family, marriage, taste and theater preferences, fashion, and so on), went unreported. Some aspects of this life were pictured in fiction, published, for instance, in the Tomsk student press. But although they give some idea of the Siberian students’ view and ways of life, these sources don’t record facts of life.

We examined the relationships among the factors of fun, self-esteem, and happiness with a group of 249 players from tennis clubs located in the Seoul capital area, South Korea. Results of analysis showed that fitness and acknowledgment increased positive self-esteem and decreased negative self-esteem. Sociability increased positive self-esteem and both interest and fitness increased happiness. Negative self-perception reduced happiness, but the relationship with positive self-esteem was not statistically significant. Finally, fitness, acknowledgement, and sociability were important antecedent variables that increased happiness through the mediator of self-esteem. We have provided useful information for busy people on how to lead a healthy and meaningful life by having fun and consistently participating in physical activities.

The paper investigates issues of organization of cadets' cultural life, leisure, and everyday life in the Hetman Sahaidachnyi National Army Academy (NAA) in Lviv. It is noted that the system of NAA's patriotic education is based on the idea of the development of Ukrainian statehood as a unifying factor in the development of Ukrainian society and the Ukrainian political nation. It is claimed that the main directions that provide the cultural development of the NAA cadets are: cycles of thematic events dedicated to the formation of cadets' love for the chosen profession and military job; courage lessons during meetings with veterans of World War ІІ, the NAA graduates, awarded state awards during the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) in Eastern Ukraine; events to honor top cadets; involvement of cadets-participants of the ATO for carrying out educational military-patriotic activities for secondary school students; concerts and art competitions among the cadet units; sports celebrations and competitions, including international ones; Remembrance Days, especially in memoriam of the NAA graduates who died during the ATO; chaplains' pastoral counseling for military personnel and members of their families, religious and educational work, pastoral care and charity; using of such opportunities as clubs and libraries, rooms of military traditions, Lviv cultural and historical institutions (theaters, museums, cinemas, scientific and art exhibitions, churches, etc.), including the relevant infrastructure of the NAA, for organizing quality evening time, leisure on holidays and weekends. Background and objective: Dietary habits and patterns have been shown to have strong influence on the mental wellbeing of elderly. Aim of the study: to compare the current nutritional status and independence in instrumental activities of daily life (IADL) in the elderly living in nursing homes and community dwellings. Methods: The study was carried out in nursing homes and elderly clubs in Cairo using descriptive comparative design. It involved a group of 125 institutionalized elderly from six nursing homes in Cairo and a second group (community dwellers) of 250 elderly from social clubs or elderly daycare centers in Cairo. The data collection tools were an interview questionnaire including the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), the IADL, and the 24-hour recall for dietary intake in addition to an inventory checklist for the nursing homes. The data collection lasted from October 2016 to December 2017.Results: The institutionalized elderly had significantly higher median age, more divorced /widows, from urban areas, with higher education, and more insufficient income; they were more obese (p = .02). In MNA 62.0% of those in community dwellings were normal compared to only 17.6% of institutionalized (p < .001), but significantly more institutionalized elders had deficient caloric intake (80.0%) compared to 69.6% of those in community dwellings (p = .03). The IADL were significantly better among those in community dwellings. In multivariate analysis, having recreations was a positive predictor of MNA score, while smoking and institutionalization were negative predictors. As for the IADL score, the level of education was its positive predictor, whereas age and institutionalization were negative predictors. Body mass index (BMI) was positively predicted by female gender, educational level, and having recreations, and negatively predicted by age. For institutionalized elderly, income was a positive predictor of the MNA score, whereas the length of institutionalization was a negative predictor. Conclusion and recommendations: Malnutrition and dependency in IADL are more prevalent among elderly in nursing homes, and are related to the duration and characteristics of the institutionalization. The study recommends improving the dietary services in nursing homes, with training programs for their staff and regular monitoring of food services.

The intent of this study was to examine if length of caregiving was associated with older widowers' adjustment to bereavement and to identify factors, based on principles underlying the Dual Process Model of Bereavement, that might mitigate the potential adverse effects of time spent caring. Two-hundred men over the age of 60 and in the second year of bereavement were identified from death records of older women who had died within a 12-month period. Interviews lasted about 2 hours and focused on widowers' experiences surrounding their wives' deaths along with questions about social support, health, retirement, and other demographic information. The Bradburn Affect Scale was used to measure positive and negative affect. Restoration-oriented coping, such as starting new relationships and activities were measured. These variables included extent of family contact, number of friends, having a confidante, involvement with neighbors, and participation in sports and clubs. Time since death and demographic variables were used as controls. Hierarchical linear regression was conducted on positive and negative affect after which potentially moderating effects were analyzed. Results indicated that the most important influences on negative affect were time since death, ethnicity, and participation in clubs while for positive affect the most significant factors included length of caregiving, number of friends, and having a confidante. Although no interaction effects were significant, patterns emerged. Implications for applying the DPM with older bereaved men are made.

Abstract Studies in developed countries indicate that social activities can make a difference in mental health in later life. Yet, research on potential benefits of social activities for older adults in developing countries, including Mexico, has been scarce. This study uses the two most recent waves (2012, 2015) of the Mexican Health and Aging Study to investigate the impact of social activities on depressive symptoms among older men (n = 4, 749) and women (n = 6,527), aged 50+, in Mexico. The results of Ordinary Least Squares regressions indicate that it is important to differentiate among specific social activities in later life. Particularly, not only group-based but also solitary social activities were predictive of better mental health. Moreover, the findings demonstrate several gender differences and similarities. Participation in clubs, communication with relatives and friends, physical exercise, and watching television were beneficial for mental health among men, whereas volunteering, playing games, and making crafts were associated with fewer depressive symptoms among women. At the same time, reading as well as doing household chores were related to better mental health among older Mexicans, regardless of gender. Furthermore, this study shows that self-reported health, functional limitations, chronic conditions, and frequent pain might shape the implications of social activities for depressive symptoms among older adults in Mexico. The insights from this study can be helpful for intervention programs that are being developed to promote benefits of group-based and solitary social activities for mental health among older men and women with different levels of physical health.

Objective: To describe the characteristics of people under 60 years of age living in residential aged care in Victoria and to examine the occupational participation of younger residents in aged care facilities by measuring their social contact, participation in recreation and community access. Methods: A survey was sent to the Directors of Nursing at all 803 Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care registered aged care facilities in Victoria. Results: The survey had a 78% response rate and information was provided about the characteristics of 330 people under 60 years with high clinical needs residing in aged care facilities. This sample was extremely isolated from peers, with 44% receiving a visit from a friend less often than once per year. Sixteen per cent of residents participated in a recreation activity less than once per month and 21% went outside less than once per month. Of the sample, 34% almost never participated in any community-based activities such as shopping, leisure or visiting friends and family. Conclusion: Over one third of younger people in aged care are effectively excluded from life in our community. Most younger residents are socially isolated and have limited opportunities for recreation. Placement of younger people in aged care facilities is inappropriate, and alternative care models and settings are required.

The purpose of this study is to understand the role of social and digital media on sport marketing and its effect on football in Iraq. This study employed a quantitative approach, with data collected by a questionnaire. Questionnaire was sent to 200 people, and they were all contacted for responses. Most of the respondents use social media (SM) as their favorite over traditional media, which suggests that the influence of SM in the life of Iraqi people is more than traditional media. Maximum respondent use facebook for their social activities through SM. Almost all respondents like, comment or share the SM posts and active on posting messages, watching the ads on SM. SM also helps respondents to get more information and they feel more connected to the brand sponsoring football clubs. Respondents also inspiring SM campaigns of sponsoring football clubs and purchase the product of that company which is promoted by their favourite player or team or club. Thus, SM and digital media plays an important role in sports marketing strategies in Iraq for major retail brands, as it allows consumers to stay update with the latest products as well as their promotions and allows them to engage in a wide range of football events and even hear from their football sport idols
