Hardie (2001) used general Markov chains to study the linear “recursive projects” in which some activities may be revisited after a later activity is completed. In this paper, we propose that it is better to treat the project as an absorbing chain. This allows us to calculate the expected value and the variance of the project duration.

When the dipolar interaction energy is much larger than the thermal energy, the average length of the chains 〈n〉 becomes much larger than 1. This strongly influences on the magnetic susceptibility χ which is enhanced in comparison to its Langevin value χL by a factor of 2〈n〉.

Value chain analysis is an important tool to assess and enhance the performance of agribusiness. This paper analyzes the empirical application of a conceptual framework known as the Rural Web to evaluate the socioeconomic complexity of a specific agribusiness value chain. This can be used as a complementary approach to traditional value chain analysis. The proposed framework goes beyond linear descriptions of product flows and examines how supply chains are built, shaped and reproduced over time and space, while considering social, cultural, environmental and political aspects. The results demonstrate that the proposed framework is a suitable method for value chain analysis, principally for those whose early stages are based on small and medium-sized rural actors. The Rural Web analysis offers decision-makers a platform to identify key actors not traditionally considered in value chain analysis, as well as the social interrelationships that occur at different dimensions. It also enables the identification of corrective and preventive measures to enhance agribusiness value chains.

The ability to determine the fragility of agribusiness value chains is valuable to agribusines management practitioners and scholars in a context where risk and uncertainty are increasingly pervasive, consequential and unpredictable. The paper argues for determining the fragility of a chain to adverse events rather than trying to predict the probability and impact of such events. The paper specifically proposes a framework to detect and quantify non-linear consequences in response to progressively deteriorating chain fragility factors. The paper’s approach is a novel alternative to the traditional value chain ‘risk assessment’. Application of the framework to the South African lamb chain reveals that a number of specific factors, like quality and safety performance and cash flow position, have consistently high fragility scores throughout the chain while some factors are uniquely localized to a specific role-player or activity, which highlights the techno-economic uniqueness of individual activities in a chain.

Purpose Football is deployed into various segments and consists of a complex value chain, with interrelationships and circularities. It is relevant in various segments and therefore it is important to understand the structure. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to present a model of a football value chain and the managerial implications inherent to this chain. Design/methodology/approach This research used a field study as its methodology, developing a semi-structured questionnaire containing open-ended questions about the representativeness of the football value chain. In-depth interviews with specialists in football were performed to collect data. Findings The results of the interviews indicated that the theoretical model is representative. Furthermore, through validation, the relevance and representativeness of the football value chain was shown, as well as its interrelationships with the other commodity and service segments. In addition, it was found that this segment is relevant and influential in the national and international market, and can be considered a factor of economic and social development. Research limitations/implications This paper provides a view of the actors who make up the football value chain, and also supplies a complementary view to the models of chains presented in the theoretical review, enabling the provision of evidence on the axis with greater added value as a new step. The limitation of this research involves the context approached, because as identified throughout the investigation, this context is complex and dynamic. In this way, the linear approach used to construct this chain led to a reduced view of reality and of present relationships. Practical implications The model shows the presence of the main actors and the structure for the transformation of raw material into a final product, and is useful to understand the existing relationships and the layers of added value. Social implications The evaluation of the conceptual model of football value chain confirms that this is a professionalized chain, which generates a significant number of direct and indirect jobs. Originality/value The authors propose a model of a football value chain which is complementary to the theoretical review developed, exposing a linkage of the players present in this chain and at what stage they are present, and supplies the managerial implications inherent to this.

In the present study, we have found that mono-unsaturated linear-chain fatty acids in the cis configuration with C18 hydrocarbon chains (i.e. oleic acid) strongly inhibited the activity of human telomerase in a cell-free enzymic assay, with an IC50 value of 8.6μM. Interestingly, fatty acids with hydrocarbon chain lengths below 16 or above 20 carbons substantially decreased the potency of inhibition of telomerase. Moreover, the cis-mono-unsaturated C18 linear-chain fatty acid oleic acid was the strongest inhibitor of all the fatty acids tested. A kinetic study revealed that oleic acid competitively inhibited the activity of telomerase (Ki = 3.06μM) with respect to the telomerase substrate primer. The energy-minimized three-dimensional structure of the linear-chain fatty acid was calculated and modelled. A molecule width of 11.53—14.26Å (where 1Å = 0.1nm) in the C16 to C20 fatty acid structure was suggested to be important for telomerase inhibition. The three-dimensional structure of the telomerase active site (i.e. the substrate primer-binding site) appears to have a pocket that could bind oleic acid, with the pocket being 8.50Å long and 12.80Å wide.

AbstractMonte Carlo simulation is conducted for a strongly coupled one-dimensional confined-particles system. We deal with an infinite chain of positively charged dust particles. The particles interact through the Yukawa screened potential. It is found that a critical value exists for the number of closest neighbors that are involved in the interaction. The inter-particle distance at equilibrium is found. Using these results, we study the dust-acoustic as well as the dust-lattice modes for two situations. In the first we neglect the friction force while in the second situation the presence of an ambient gas in plasma is considered.

Enterprises are the origin of social innovation. Enterprises implement sustainable relations through “people-oriented” social value creation, particularly other economic developments in the post-2020 COVID-19 pandemic no longer show linear development but more diversity. On the one hand, enterprises must face the fast social transformation towards AI and superintelligence. On the other hand, enterprises must cope with green sustainable development, emphasizing corporate social responsibility in innovative research and development. An increasing number of enterprises respond to the service-oriented and green sustainability-based consumer market today by expanding and collaborating between the upstream and downstream relations in supply chains. Therefore, enterprises must construct a healthy and sustainable dynamic value chain through value co-creation. The study analyzes the types of the dynamic brand value chain and the operational conditions that provide enterprises with the direction in searching for and establishing a sustainable partnership. We employ literature review, case analysis, and in-depth interviews to determine the types and causes of the dynamic brand value chain, followed by integrating sustainable design to verify the sustainability in the dynamic brand value chain model. The study findings show that growth in quadrants of culture for the tandem brand value chain acts as the primary motivation to strengthen a sustainable relationship. Subsequently, the development in pursuit of brand value creation will intensify the sustainable relationships and activities of the brand, causing sustainable partnerships to be more intense. The primary motivation for the branch brand value chain lies in the growth in quadrants of culture; the more extensive the development system, the more diverse the participating niche brand, and the brand value innovation of pursuit climbs higher.

Анотація:
The aim of the paper is to present a conceptual exploration on how a newly emerged distribution service business in China is developed, interpreted and modelled. The study draws on a recent case from a fast expanding 3PL company in China and frames the case with a conceptual flow-model and interprets it mathematically by using a linear bi-level programming algorism. It finds that recent advances in the steel bar logistics practices in China have been phenomenal. The emerging business model is set to define the standard for the industrial sector. The logistics process and structure changes were primarily driven by not only the higher returns on investment to the participating members individually, but also by that of the total supply chain. The emerged steel bar logistics service model studied here represents a new business evolution in the 3PL service industry ever seen in China. The application of bi-level programming algorithm in assessing returns on investment and the total supply chain value has been original.

L’étude de la planification entre partenaires coopérant au sein d’une chaine logistique au niveau tactique fait l’objet de cette thèse. Le présent travail se focalise plus particulièrement sur la coordination des processus de planification des activités de transport et de production, autour d’une nouvelle approche fondée sur la théorie des jeux. Deux situations de coopération sont considérées, selon le caractère homogène ou hétérogène des partenaires ; ainsi une première étude est menée sur un ensemble d’opérateurs de transport pour ensuite être étendue à la relation entre l’entreprise manufacturière et les transporteurs qui travaillent avec elle. L’expérimentation s’appuie sur des modèles mathématiques en programmation linéaire pour simuler les processus de planification des différents groupes de partenaires (également appelés coalitions), un protocole de coopération utilisant certaines propriétés liées à la théorie des jeux et sur une répartition équitable des gains / coûts telle que préconisée par la valeur de Shapley. This thesis focuses on the collaboration between partners inside supply chain at the tactical level of planning. This work aims to develop a new approach based on game theory to solve the problem of coordinating processes concerned by production and transportation planning decision making. Two types of coalitions cooperative games are implemented according to the nature of partners: the cooperation between homogeneous partners concerns multiple transport operators while the other case is more on the relationships between heterogeneous partners including one manufacturer and multiple transport operators. The coordination is supported by mathematical models implemented in linear programming which simulate the planning process within the various possible pools of partners, also called “coalitions”. These models are used in a gains/costs sharing protocol between the partners which is based on the Shapley value. Some basic properties are checked in order to verify if the cooperation is valid. The models and the protocol are assessed on theoretical test cases based on realistic data sets

Purpose The purpose of this master’s thesis is to investigate consumers’ perceptions of the end-of-life stage of a garment. Overall, the objective is to determine influencing factors that impact consumers’ disposal decisions to conceive a better understanding of post-purchase consumer behavior and formulate implications for both business and society. Design/Methodology/Approach The research of this study follows a deductive approach, whereby hypotheses are derived from existing literature and the Theory of Planned Behavior. A single quantitative data collection method is applied to collect primary data, namely, a cross-sectional self-administered online questionnaire. An effective sample size of 398 respondents is statistically analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling. The conducted descriptive research design investigates the causal relationships between the latent variables and the Behavioral Intention. Findings The empirical findings reveal that consumers’ Attitude positively and individuals’ Subjective Norm negatively influences the intention to dispose of garments. The Personal Value of consumers highly negatively impacts the Attitude and therefore indicates an indirect relationship to an individual’s behavioral intention. There is no significant correlation between consumers’ Endeavor to Change to their Attitude towards garment disposal and between Perceived Behavioral Control and an individual’s disposal intention. Implications Fashion enterprises are advised to act as educators to raise awareness of the adverse effects of frequent garment disposal and elucidate lifetime-extension measures, such as creating emotional attachment through customization or co-creation. Furthermore, emphasizing longevity during the production phase is crucial to hinder the influential factor of disposal due to damage. Therefore, policymakers’ importance is decisive in establishing industry-wide standards regarding garment production and lifetime-extension practices. Furthermore, societal education about garment disposal opportunities should be provided, for example, through implementation in the general curriculum of schools and governmental or nongovernmental organizations’ campaigns. Originality/Value By taking the general development toward a throwaway society into account, a connection to the textile industry is drawn in this thesis. When looking at the literature, it is visible that increasing attention is placed on the post-consumer phase. However, the technical constitution and the actual disposal approaches were mostly covered in this context. Therefore, the authors of this thesis examine the particular consumers’ determination of the end-of-life stage of garments to contribute to current circumstances and related literature.

This study investigates the changing television landscape and consumption habits and the effects on the Swedish public service television(SVT). Recent shifts have amplified the ongoing decline of linear television and were marked by increasing migration of viewers to online video consumption and global streaming services. These new competitors escalate the challenges facing national broadcasters and emphasize the role of having a strong independent public service television that can remain relevant to all its audiences. SVT has been a pioneer in shifting to online and launched its video streaming service SVT Play in 2006. But the service is unable to recuperate the viewership bleeding from SVT linear channels, and reaching younger audiences has never been more challenging. The study presents a literature review and background referring to recent general trends in the television market, to put shifts and disruptions in the Swedish market in a larger context. We also present a thorough background on the Swedish television market focusing on the position of SVT and SVT Play. We discussed dynamics and drivers of recent structural and consumption shifts through in-depth interviews with key personnel from SVT as well as with other experts from different areas within the media and telecom industry. We seek to answer what future challenges and opportunities are for SVT Play and how to deal with those challenges and opportunities. The data collected were analyzed and reported in this study. The main findings indicate a new era ahead of public service heralded by the unprecedented decline of SVT broadcast and the increased consumption divergence in 2019. The study found that SVT Play has a central future role of public service television and should be further empowered to remain agile and relevant, through diverse, differentiated, and personalized offerings, but also through constant engagement with audiences and continuous learning of what they value and demand in a constantly changing media landscape.
Denna studie undersöker det föränderliga TV-landskapet och de nya konsumtionsvanornas effekter på svensk public service- TV (SVT). Nyligen har skiftningar intensifierat den pågående minskningen av linjär-TV vilket märkts i den ökande migrationen av TV-tittare till online video-konsumtion och globala streamingtjänster. Dessa nya konkurrenter trappar upp utmaningarna som nationella programföretag ställts inför och betonar vikten av att ha stark och oberoende public service-TV som kan förbli relevant för samtliga målgrupper. SVT har varit pionjärer i övergången till online och lanserade sin streamingtjänst för video, SVT Play, redan 2006. Men tjänsten är oförmögen att hämta upp de förlorade tittarsiffrorna från SVTs linjära TV-kanaler. Samtidigt så har det aldrig tidigare varit svårare att nå de unga målgrupperna. Denna studie presenterar en litteraturgenomgång och bakgrund med referenser till de senaste allmänna trenderna TV-marknad, för att ställa den svenska marknadens förändringar och störningar i ett större sammanhang. Vi presenterar även en grundlig bakgrund av den svensk TV-marknaden med fokus på SVTs och SVT Plays positioner i denna. Vi har resonerat kring dynamiken och drivkrafterna bakom de senaste strukturella förändringarna och förändringarna i konsumtion, genom djupgående intervjuer med nyckelpersoner från SVT samt andra experter inom olika områden av media- och Telecom-industrin. Vi söker svaret till vilka de framtida utmaningarna och möjligheterna för SVT Play är, samt hur man bör handskas med dessa utmaningar och möjligheter. Den insamlade datan har analyserats och rapporteras i denna studie. De huvudsakliga upptäckterna indikerar en ny era för public service, påbörjad av de historiska minskningarna av SVTs sändningar samt den ökande konsumtionsdivergensen under 2019. Studien har funnit att SVT Play besitter en central framtida roll för public service-TV och bör fortsatt vara stärkt i uppgiften att förbli rörlig och relevant, genom varierade, differentierade och personanpassade erbjudanden, men även genom ett konstant engagemang med sin publik och ett kontinuerligt lärande över vad de värderar och önskar i ett ständigt skiftande medielandskap.

The purpose of this thesis have been to evaluate to what extend the ongoing development of Nato Network Enabling Capabilities Maturity levels, ( NNEC ML) have incorporated the human factor, or if the development is focusing to much on the technological aspects. As a background I have described the NNEC Maturity levels and to central elements; Defence lines of development and NNEC Value chain. In my thesis I point out different areas where the human factor is not taken enough into consideration, and I argue for a shift in focus from technology to the human factor. My conclusion is that it is necessary to shift focus from technology to the human factor in the following development if we shall succeed in bringing NATO and the different nations to the highest maturity level, Coherent. There is no doubt that technology is important, but it seems like the word networked is interpreted to be only a matter of technology. Concerning aspects like cultural understanding and the western linear way of thinking, it is necessary to broaden the meaning of the word networked to include the human factor in a greater sense. NNEC ML 5, Coherent means a maturity level where it is unnatural to operate in any other way than networked. A prerequisite to achieve this maturity level is that the people in the network feel familiar with the system they are operating, and trust their coalition partners. If we shall succeed in bringing the NATO coalition and the different nations to the highest maturity level it is essential that the human factor is prioritized in the following development. For the time being, the human factor is not emphasized enough.

Different methodologies have emerged for effectively planning and controlling a project. The Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) focuses on eliminating the floats from activities and reallocating them into strategic positions on the critical chain. These time positions are known as “buffers”, and serve as a control mechanism of the project. On the other hand, the Linear Schedule Method (LSM) is developed to prevent delays or bottlenecks for construction projects on which similar construction activities are executed. Besides the scheduling approaches, some management strategies have been developed to control a construction project. The Earned Value Management (EVM) is a methodology used to measure the real progress of a project and to integrate the scope, time and cost management. Moreover, the Lean Construction is a methodology designed to produce predictable work flow and rapid learning in scheduling, design, construction and commissioning of projects. The reviewed literature shows that some studies have addressed the integration of criticality concepts of CCPM on LSM to define a final linear schedule in the planning phase. However, there is a further need to develop a cost-time management system framework that can control a linear project is within budget and on schedule. A framework for developing a planning and executing control mechanism for linear construction projects from the point of view of a general contractor is presented. Initially, CCPM and LSM are integrated in order to create a project buffer able to control the development of the project in terms of time. The project buffer is obtained through the reduction of the duration of some activities belonging to the critical chain. Furthermore, a bonus-penalty system and a cost buffer are included within the framework to encourage subcontractors to reduce their activity durations and to ensure continuity of the work, respectively. In addition, this paper incorporates concepts from Lean Construction and EVM for the purposes of (1) managing construction projects with a higher planning reliability and (2) monitoring and controlling the consumption of project buffer and cost buffer according to established consumption criteria. A case study seeks to validate this framework based on demonstrating the way a general contractor can ensure a project is developed under budget and on schedule in all the stages, by controlling and monitoring that subcontractors work as expected.

This chapter enriches the Expanded PHI perspective through the lens of complexity. Current technical health systems and institutional developments, including the increasing inter-connections between them, and the uncertainities associated with both context and goals are enhancing complexity exponentially. Simple linear approaches to design and develop systems can no longer work, as they imply trying to bring order into processes which by definition defy them. Cloud computing and big data are offered as examples to depict this rising complexity, providing rich opportunities to materialize them. Many organizations are adopting outsourcing models as a means to manage this complexity. However, outsourcing comes in multiple hues and shades, from a simple use of third party hardware to the externalization of the whole value chain of activities, including the analysis and use of data. Public health informatics in LMICs, which are population-based and taking place in largely resource-constrained and unstructured settings, are by definition problematic to outsource and should be approached with caution. An incremental approach where a ‘cultivation strategy’ addresses uncertainities, and ‘attractors’ draw in user-participants are more likely to succeed.

AbstractGenomic prediction and selection models (GS) were deployed as part of DataBio project infrastructure and solutions. The work addressed end-user requirements, i.e., the need for cost-effectiveness of the implemented technologies, simplified breeding schemes, and shortening the time to cultivar development by selecting for genetic merit. Our solutions applied genomic modelling in order to sustainably improve productivity and profits. GS models were implemented in sorghum crop for several breeding scenarios. We fitted the best linear unbiased predictions data using Bayesian ridge regression, genomic best linear unbiased predictions, Bayesian least absolute shrinkage and selection operator, and BayesB algorithms. The performance of the models was evaluated using Monte Carlo cross-validation with 70% and 30%, respectively, as training and validation sets. Our results show that genomic models perform comparably with traditional methods under single environments. Under multiple environments, predicting non-field evaluated lines benefits from borrowing information from lines that were evaluated in other environments. Accounting for environmental noise and other factors, also this model gave comparable accuracy with traditional methods, but higher compared to the single environment model. The GS accuracy was comparable in genomic selection index, aboveground dry biomass yield and plant height, while it was lower for the dry mass fraction of the fresh weight. The genomic selection model performances obtained in our pilots are high enough to sustain sorghum breeding for several traits including antioxidants production and allow important genetic gains per unit of time and cost.

Abstract In this chapter we look at the origins of animal welfare as a societal concern and the interplay between the concept of animal welfare, economics and policy. We firstly propose adjustments to the 'standard view' of the development of animal welfare concerns (which we refer to as the Harrison-Brambell- FAWC (HBF) sequence). For example, we suggest that the role of science in setting animal welfare policy is a more complex process than is sometimes acknowledged. We discuss the application of economics to animal welfare including the analysis of the costs of animal welfare improvements to more recent work on trade-offs relating to animal welfare across the supply chain. Considering this range of uses of economics relating to animal welfare, we identify that the question of how to value animal welfare in economic terms remains unresolved. Lastly, we suggest that the period 1965-2008 may come to be regarded as a 'golden era' for the translation of animal welfare concerns into positive socio-political actions. We discuss a raft of issues which appear to have diminished the position of animal welfare in the policy 'pecking order'. However, societal concern over animal welfare will mean that government and others will need to be cautious of breaching 'red lines'. On a more positive note, the public profile that animal welfare enjoys will continue to provide the opportunity for policy and business innovations to improve animals' lives.

Supply chain management (SCM) as a concept first originated in the manufacturing industry from logistics and just-in-time production. Used to successfully utilize SCM elements and diminish lingering issues in construction, its importance lies in the focus that it gives to plan different features of the supply chain by also involving other parties of the chain in the process. SCM in construction supports firms by aiding in the improvement of competitiveness between firms and the increase of the company's profits and control over projects. Although generic supply chains should be simple and linear, the construction sector is much more complex. These problems are present in different parts of SCM due to interdependence in the organization and supply chain. Through a case study analysis and semi-structured interviews, this chapter aims to identify and better understand the role of SCM, challenges and complications in different levels of the supply chain, and how firms utilize it to create greater value in construction operations, and specifically in Albania.

The sustainability of automotive component suppliers is under threat due to various global challenges. Literature suggests that only the actual personal relationship can differentiate suppliers within supply chains. Literature further encourages more insight into the conceptualization of personal interaction and trust within supply chains. This paper reports on research that tested the importance of trust and its directional linear relationship with personal interaction. Personal interaction revealed a significant correlation with trust, indicating that actions of the Tier 2 supplier during the sourcing process can substantially influence trust with the Tier 1 buyer. It is accordingly crucial for automotive component suppliers to invest in strategies to increase their personal interaction with their buyers in order to promote trust and in turn to promote perceived customer value and customer retention.

Supplier selection is one of the most important decisions within SCM since suppliers have emerged as value adding partners in industrial relationship. In the current study, supplier selection on the basis of information pertaining to quality and delivery time is explained. The cost aspects are taken care while coordinating procurement and distribution in the echelons. The deteriorating nature of the product creates imprecision in demand and fuzziness in different stages of the coordination. A fuzzy bi-objective mixed integer non-linear model is developed, where the first objective minimizes the combined cost of holding, processing, and transportation in all the echelons and the second objective maximizes combination of lot acceptance percentage and on-time delivery percentage. The solution process converts the model into crisp form and solves using a fuzzy goal programming technique.

It is often crucial for successful decision making approaches in multi-stage manufacturing supply chains to explicitly account for non-linear transportation costs. In this article, we have explored this problem by considering a Two-Stage Production-Transportation (TSPT). A two-stage supply chain that faces a deterministic stream of external demands for a single product is considered. A finite supply of raw materials, and finite production at stage one has been assumed. Items are manufactured at stage one and transported to stage two, where the storage capacity of the warehouses is limited. Packaging is completed at stage two (that is, value is added to each item, but no new items are created), and the finished goods inventories are stored which is used to meet the final demand of customers. During each period, the optimized production levels in stage one, as well as transportation levels between stage one and stage two and routing structure from the production plant to warehouses and then to customers, must be determined. The authors consider “different cost structures,” for both manufacturing and transportation. This TSPT model with capacity constraint at both stages is optimized using Genetic Algorithms (GA) and the results obtained are compared with the results of other optimization techniques of complete enumeration, LINDO, and CPLEX.

Smart connected industrial products and the Internet of Things (IoT) are transforming the industrial business landscape in a radical way. To reach the full potential of IoT-technologies manufacturing firms are forced to rethink almost every aspect of their value creation process. To utilize this promising digital technology and to cope with the new market conditions of IoT environments, research shows that industrial firms have to make a fundamental shift in value creation logic and break free from the value chain perspective of business. Instead they have to embrace a view where value is co-created within ecosystems in both a vertical and a horizontal manner. By exploring the value creation logic of small and medium sized (SME) Swedish industrial machinery manufacturers, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how manufacturing firms view their value creation processes and how aligned this logic is to the latest research in IoT. The study found that Swedish industrial machine manufacturers do understand the transformative force of IoT-technologies and see great business opportunities to utilize IoT in their business. The study, however, identified a lack of co-creation and difficulties in embracing an ecosystem perspective. While quick to embrace change on a technical level, respondents still adhere to a firm-centric and linear perspective of value creation, with a strong attachment to the value chain concept. The study suggests that it is not a lack of technical proficiency or engineering know-how, but rather an adherence to goods-dominant logic and attachment to the value chain concept that prevent Swedish SME manufacturers from fully embracing the growing market of industrial IoT. Hence, we see an urgent need for both practitioners and academia to shift their attention from the dazzling potential of cutting-edge technologies to the nitty-gritty business of incorporating co-creation and ecosystem-thinking into current business practices.

Linear even-carbon-number alpha-olefins (LAO) with four or more carbon atoms are important compounds of high demand in chemical industry as precursors of a wide range of value-added chemicals [1]. LAO are used as co-monomers for polyethylene production, for the production of alcohols (mainly in detergents and plasticizers) and for synthesis of polyalphaolefins (used in synthetic lubricants). Alpha-olefins (C4, C6, C8 and C10) are mainly used to produce poly(vinyl chloride) plasticizers, high-density and linear low-density polyethylene to impart the stress-crack resistance. C10–C14 alpha-olefins can be used to synthesize linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (synthetic detergents). A conventional route to produce alpha-olefins is oligomerization of ethylene. The process provides production of high quality alpha-olefins but is very costly. If not oligomerization, LAO can be produced by thermal cracking of waxy paraffins but the product is not pure and contains numerous internal olefins, dienes and paraffin impurities. The process is conducted in the vapor phase at relatively low cracking temperatures and needs rapid quenching to prevent side reactions such as isomerization or cyclization. In our previous work [2], we showed that the selectivity to alpha-olefins can be increased considerably via catalytic cracking of n-alkanes under selective MW heating of catalysts. In the present work, the general regularities of MW cracking of n-alkanes are presented. Porous ceramic matrix Al2O3/Al composites (ceramometals) and various carbon materials (CM) having high dielectric losses were studied as supports of the catalysts. MW cracking was conducted with n-C16H34 and n-C28H58. The influence particle size and surface morphology of ceramometals and CM on the structural and group composition of the products was studied. It was established that LAO (C2-C23) and n-alkanes (C2-C26) were the main cracking products under selective MW heating of the used supports. The quantitative analysis of the products demonstrated that the liquid-phase process is more selective to alpha-olefins at the MW catalytic cracking than at the convectional thermal cracking. Silica modification of the surface of CM was shown to suppress spark discharge (usually observed at MW heating of CM); hence, the thermal cleavage of C-C bonds on the CM surface but not in the plasma discharge contributes the most to the formation of radicals. It was shown that the selectivity to liquid alpha-olefin could be more than 85 % under MW heating of cermets in region of the E - field node and decrease considerably in the region of H - field node.

Abstract The adaptive linear programming (ALP) algorithm is an extension of the sequential linear programming algorithm where nonlinear formulations are iteratively approximated as linear formulations linearized about an iteration starting point. In the ALP algorithm, heuristics are used to determine the value of a critical parameter, namely, the reduced move coefficient (RMC). The RMC defines how far to move towards the solution of iteration “n” from the starting point for iteration “n” in specifying the starting point for iteration “n+1”. The RMC choice affects the efficacy of the approximation; however, there is no mechanism of evaluating the algorithm performance with respect to the RMC value so as to improve the design efficiency and effectiveness. This limitation is addressed in this paper. In this paper, we enhance the ALP algorithm with parameter learning (ALPPL) and generalize to make the knowledge gained reusable. We propose a three-step procedure of rule-based parameter learning leading to robust solutions. An industry-inspired problem, the integrated design of a hot rolling process chain for the production of a steel rod, is used to demonstrate the implementation. The three-step procedure could be used to improve other critical parameter determinations, especially when there is a lack of mechanisms for algorithm-performance evaluation, evaluation criteria vary with problems, or heuristics are over-used.

Refurbishing companies receive used products with varying levels of quality. One challenge facing the remanufacturer is the extent to which upgrading should be conducted. An analytical approach is proposed to evaluate the product recovery system with stochastic variability of the quality of the components/parts returned to the remanufacturing environment. The decision process is formulated via a discrete time Markov chain model. Then, a linear program approach is applied to solve the model to determine up to which level a returned product should be upgraded. The effects of different policies (the level of upgrade) on the total expected value are studied and the optimal decision which maximizes expected average revenue is determined. An example of a copy machine is used to illustrate an application of the model. Finally, the results of the model are further investigated applying a systems dynamics approach to determine the effects of the suggested upgrade strategy on the amount of reusable inventory.

The present article presents the fatigue crack growth behavior of new high strength steels designated R4S grade. Eight Compact Tension (CT) specimens with 25 mm thickness were subjected to constant amplitude loading while exposed to seawater without and with cathodic protection. The Cathodic Potential (CP) was set to −890 mV and −1100 mV relative to an Ag/AgCl reference cell. Rates in air are included as a reference. The crack growth parameters were determined from a linear relation between da/dN and δK for a log-log scale. The derived figures are given in the table below. The figures for dry air and cathodic protection are valid for δK between 15 and 30 MPam0.5. Below this range the slope m of the linear relation will change and further investigations have to be carried out for this region. The figures for free corrosion are valid for δK values from 10 to 30 MPam0.5. The threshold value for δK is close to 5 MPam0.5 in this case. The measured growth rates were compared with the rates for medium strength carbon manganese steels found in rules and regulation, i.e. BS7910. The present growth rates are well within the scatter band given for these steels in air and free corrosion. The present growth rates found in seawater with cathodic protection are however substantially lower than the rates given in BS7910. When a cathodic potential of −1100 mV was applied, crack closure was observed at medium levels of δK. The explanation is the formation of calcareous deposit in the wake of the crack front that gives significantly reduced growth rates and finally leads to crack closure. This finding is a surprise for a high strength steel. The results are promising and should be investigated further. Finally, a linear elastic fracture mechanics model was established to study the fatigue behavior in a stud-less link. The model was used to construct S-N curves that are consistent with experimental fatigue lives and the design curve given in the DNV rules. The present growth parameters were used in conjuction with a crack-like initial flaw with depth in the range from 0.12 to 0.20 mm. The difference found between the growth rates in dry air and in free corrosion are in accordance with tested fatigue lives for these two environments.

In the present paper eigenvalue problems for non-selfadjoint linear differential operators smoothly dependent on a vector of real parameters are considered. Bifurcation of eigenvalues along smooth curves in the parameter space is studied. The case of multipleeigen value with Keldysh chain of arbitrary length is considered. Explicit expressions describing bifurcation of eigen-values are found. The obtained formulae use eigenfunctions and associated functions of the adjoint eigenvalue problems as well as the derivatives of the differential operator taken at the initial point of the parameter space. These results are important for the stability theory, sensitivity analysis and structural optimization. As a mechanical application the extended Beck’s problem of stability of an elastic column under action of potential force and tangential follower force is considered and discussed in detail.

In the complicated economic context, will survive only companies who can obtain recognizable products, with higher quality and who are economically efficient by reducing losses of any kind. An example of good practices is represented by SC Fibalco SRL, a footwear company from Craiova, Romania, which emphasizes the development strategy of the Quality Management and the value chain analysis. Fibalco's success is explained by the fact that the value chain analysis is a component of the quality management and the responsibility is distributed pyramidally starting from each employee to the top management. One of the chains in Fibalco's value chain is Industrialization of the new product, which is an element of originality and makes the difference between the theoretical and the practical approaches from the perspective of launching a new product on the market. Due to the Industrialization of the new product chain, in order to make it efficiently reproducible, many risks of failure are eliminated from the design phase, especially those related to the technical execution of the product. The result is a "clean" footwear product with clear lines without unnecessary sophistication. This paper demonstrates that the implementation of quality management and a complex value chain adapted to the company needs leads to brand value and loyalty among consumers.

Abstract Linkages are inherently light, inexpensive, strong, adaptable to high speeds and have little friction. Moreover the class of functions suitable for linkage representation is large. For all these reasons numerous recent works deal with the problem of design mechanisms for robotic applications, but very often in terms of components such as gripper, transmission, balancing. We investigate a new application for linkages, using them to design industrial manipulator. The selected mechanism for this application is a four bar linkage with an adjustable lengh for exact path generation. This adjustment is performed by a track or cam which is substituted to a bar. By this mean, we define a cam-modulated linkage which possess superior accuracy potential and is capable of accomodating of industrial design restrictions. Such a kinematic chain is free from structural error for path generation and the presence of the track introduces the flexibility and versality in the usefull four bar chain. The synthesis technique of cam modulated linkage utilizes loop closure equations, envelop theory to find the centerline and the profile of the track. These techniques provide a systematic approach to the design of mechanism for path generation when extreme accuracy is required. In order to complete an contribution, we take in consideration the static balancing of the synthesized manipulator. To achieve static mass balancing we use the potential energy storage capabilities of linear springs, and integrated it with the non-linear motion of mechanism to provide an exact value of the desired counter loading functions. Examples are worked to demonstrate applications of these procedures and to illustrate the industrial potential of spring balancing and cam-modulated linkage.

We aim to establish traceability at calibration and hence to enable a certified flow measurement with a calibrated measurement system. A new calibration method is presented for laser velocimetry. We develop a simple, unique method which establishes traceability of its uncertainty. The device is transportable and calibratable by any users for their own instruments on-site. Our new method requires only a rotating disk and a precision linear stage providing positional information. In former calibration methods, the uncertainty of the orbit radius of a scattering object was dominant due to the difficulty of accessing the true center of the rotation. The diffuculty was solved in our new method. The new method provides an accurate estimate of the orbit radius and hence the velocity of the calibration object through a linear regression. The calibration constant is obtained even without the need of direct access to the absolute value of the rotation radius. The uncertainty budget is examined throughout the calibration procedure. The traceability chain is established once the traceabilities are maintained to the translation stage and the motor used for rotating the calibration disk. The new method has been realized with three different calibration setups and their performances were investigated. We demonstrate that the new calibration method can achieve uncertainty down to 0.1%.

Mooring chains are critical components of off-shore installations. The fatigue assessment of these components often requires complex calculations to determine the loadings in the mooring chains. Traditionally the loadings can be converted into fatigue lives using S-N curves such as the DnV Posmoor curve, or the API RP2 SK curve. Deep water SPARs undergoing vortex-induced-motion (VIM) in loop current conditions may be subject to higher mean/cyclic loadings with considerably lower fatigue life estimates — compared with earlier installations in which fatigue life estimates were so large that fine tuning fatigue prediction methodologies was only of academic interest. In this case a more accurate evaluation of the fatigue performance of mooring chains is needed. In this study the stress concentration factors (SCFs) of a studless 5.25” (133mm) mooring chain were examined in a seven-pocket fairlead. The chain-fairlead system analyzed in this study had a very tight fit (i.e., was not designed for passing connector links), and the results of this study will, in general, not be applicable to other chain-fairlead combinations without additional study. The computed SCFs of the stud-less link interacting with the fairlead pocket were compared to the corresponding SCFs in a chain link away from the fairlead. The study shows that the maximum SCF ratio is 1.15, significantly less than the upper bound 2.5 value recommended by Det Norske Veritas in OS-E301 in lieu of detailed analyses. This has a significant impact, nearly an order of magnitude, on fatigue life prediction of the chain, justifying the analytical effort. The study also found that the SCF of the chain link in the fairlead is a function of the geometry of the chain and the fairlead. As a result some guidance is provided in this paper with respect to the implications of minimum SCFs on other link and fairlead geometries. This study combines computational efforts from NEL and ChevronTexaco in a two-pronged approach where: 1) NEL provided calculations addressing parametric variations of the chain link angles of the mooring line leaving the fairlead and the chain tension levels, and 2) ChevronTexaco validated simplified modelling assumptions done by NEL to make the parametric problem tractable.

This paper carries-out a higher-order, multiple scales perturbation analysis on nonlinear monoatomic and diatomic chains with the intent of predicting invariant waveforms. The chains incorporate linear, quadratic, and cubic force-displacement relationships, and linear dampers. Multi-harmonic results for 1st and 2nd order expansions are reported in closed form, while results for the 3rd order are computed numerically on a case-by-case basis, thus avoiding difficulties associated with large symbolic expressions. Dimensionless parameters are introduced which characterize the amplitude-dependent nonlinear nature of a given chain. Interpretation of the perturbation solutions suggests that the nonlinear chains support certain waveforms which propagate invariantly; i.e., the spectral content does not change significantly over time and space. Numerical simulations confirm this finding using initial conditions corresponding to a specific order of the perturbation solution, and subsequent FFT’s of the response track the growth (or decay) of spatial harmonic content. A variance parameter computes mean fluctuation of the harmonics about their initial values. For a variety of parameter sets, the numerical studies confirm that spectral variance reduces when waves receive 2nd order initial conditions as compared to 1st order ones. Furthermore, chains given 3rd order initial conditions exhibit smaller variance when compared to those given 1st and 2nd order ones. The studies’ results suggest that introducing higher-order multiple scales perturbation analysis captures long-term, non-localized invariant waves (or cnoidal waves), which have the potential for propagating coherent information over long distances.
