The article focuses on the problems of translation in the field of hermeneutics, understood as a methodology in the activity of an interpreter, the doctrine of the interpretation of texts, as a component of the transmission of information in a communicative aspect. The relevance of the study is caused by the special attention of modern linguistics to the under-researched issues of hermeneutics related to the problems of transmission of foreign language text semantics in translation. The process of translation in the aspect of hermeneutics is regarded as the optimum search and decision-making process, which corresponds to a specific set of functional criteria of translation, which can take many divergent forms. The translator carries out a number of specific translation activities: the choice of linguistic means and means of expression in the translation language, replacement and compensation of nonequivalent units. The search for the optimal solution itself is carried out using the “trial and error” method. The translator always acts as an interpreter. Within the boundaries of a individual utterance, it must be mentally reconstructed as conceptual situations, the mentally linguistic actions of the author, which are verbalized in this text.

This essay addresses the theme of the transmission of knowledge starting from the process of traslatio studiorum. Such phenomenon – which occurred between the ancient Greece and occidental Europe since the medieval period – was intended as the triggering phenomenon of a whole series of transmission processes, persisted untill the Renaissance. It is my intention to propose a double riding, considering the Mediterranean area as a transient space, where different current of thoughts have been screened by speculative and linguistical filters, represented by the overlapping of commentators and translators.
On first place, I intend to identify this phenomenon of knowledge's transmission, understood as transcultural process, taken in his historical connotation, that is as a process that commutes from one century to another. Secondly, considering the Arabic intervention concerning the translation and comment of Aristotelian auctoritates, I would like to analyze the delicate process of transmission and contamination between different systems of thought. Within these coordinates, it is my intention to focus on the contact between two systems of thought that applied such approaches in the Dialectic field, namely Lorenzo Valla's and Pierre de la Ramée's, better known as Petrus Ramus. I will take the cases of Valla and Ramus as examples of this phenomenon of translation: first, in the historical sense, since there is a shift of approach from century to century; secondly, in a geographical sense that affects the Mediterranean area, as both Valla and Ramus dealth with the linguistic problems linked to dialectic received from the Arabic heritage. I argue that these speculative currents might have come into contact, first, as the product of a long process of translatio studiorum, and then, as heirs of a tradition that had been influenced by the transmissions that had taken place in the Mediterranean.
In conclusion, the purpose of this note is to show the preliminary and little debated issue of the possible contact between two paradigms of thought which justified a change in the approach of the study of Dialectic between the major Italian centers of knowledge of the XV century and XVI century Paris. This creates the space for some hints of acclimatization of Valla's dialectic at the Ramus paradigm, thanks to the shifting of attention from the perfectly solid linguistic practice in Valla's logical philological method to the correct procedures of reasoning that were completely detached from the metaphysics dimension and projected towards the institution of the Methodus.

ABSTRACTThis article examines the seemingly dichotomous linguistic processes of transmission and diffusion (Labov, 2007) in the regional variety of French spoken in Béarn, southwestern France. Using a sociophonetic apparent time methodology, an analysis of nasal vowel quality provides evidence for the advancement of linguistic changes from below taking place between successive generations during the transmission process, as well as for change from above taking place in the variety as a result of exposure to diffusing non-local varieties of French. The results address Labov's (2007) assertion that it is rare to investigate incremental changes occurring from below in European dialectological studies and shed light on the transmission–diffusion interface by showing the adoption of an individual change from above to instigate a faithfully-transmitted counterclockwise chain shift in the regional French nasal vowel system.

The article deals with the problem of linguistic reflection and its implementation through the relationship between consciousness and linguistic activity. The problem of linguistic reflection is one of the urgent problems in modern Kazakh linguistics. Consideration of reflection in relation to language forms the basis of the concept of language reflection, and language has been shown to be an important tool in its definition. The materialization or verbalization of information that entered the human mind through language corresponds to the concept of linguistic reflection. The scientific work proposes a model of the process of language reflection. A review of the scientific understanding of the levels of linguistic consciousness was made, and the marking of information by a language unit and the transmission of the speaker's thoughts as an indicator of the connection between language and consciousness was presented by an analysis of an excerpt from A. Kunanbayev's poem. Linguistic units used in speech facts were considered from the point of view of the mental aspect. In the research work, definitions of the terms consciousness, linguistic consciousness, reflection, and reflexive are given and their meaning is revealed. The article uses methods of analysis, synthesis, description, and modeling based on the work of researchers of the concepts of language and consciousness, language, and reflection. The article aims to analyze the relationship between consciousness and language activity in the process of language reflection and present a model of language reflection. Achieving this goal includes the collection of theoretical data related to the use of the term "reflection" in various fields of science, a review of works that study the problem of language reflection, the definition of a model of the process of language reflection and the corresponding analysis of language units.

AbstractThe considerable agreement across languages in the way they categorize the color domain, despite independent historical development, demands an explanation. One option is to postulate a universal innate representation of the color categories, 'hardwired' into each observer's brain. An alternative is that observers internalize their color categories through a process of cultural (linguistic) transmission, constrained by some kind of 'optimality hypothesis' to account for the cross-language agreement. A number of optimality hypotheses are reviewed. It is tempting to believe that the vivid experiential quality of the categories can only be explained if they are determined by innate representations rather than by linguistic imprinting. However, linguistic transmission of color categories – perturbed from their optimal boundaries by special circumstances – fits best with the experience of dichromats. Even for the 'primary hue' categories, where the case for innate representations should be strongest, the evidence is far from convincing.

In the article, the linguistic and cultural characteristics of metaphors in the language of Turkish sources are covered based on the work "Qutadg ʼu bilig". The author states that metaphor is a means of shaping the linguistic landscape of the world, like linguistic units that bring nominative and communicative goals closer together. However, this tool, unlike others, serves to create new concepts using pre-existing meanings in the language system. Therefore, metaphor not only serves to ensure the existence of meaning, but is also a mechanism of formation of this meaning and a means of its transmission in the process of communication

The article is devoted to a critical review of modern works of leading Ukrainian and foreign researchers focused on the study of English-language Internet communication. The relevance of the research is determined by the fact that the Internet has given users an unprecedented freedom of communicative action, which did not exist in the former historical forms of communication, which overcomes geographical distances and social differences. A comprehensive analysis of the main characteristics and features of the functioning of Internet communication elements was carried out. Special attention is paid to the phenomenon of multimodality – one of the main features of Internet communication, which involves the use of several means or channels of information transmission. Multimodality describes communication in terms of the textual, audiovisual, linguistic, and spatial modes that are involved in composing and transmitting a message. Multimodal communication uses various semiotic modes, which are aimed at increasing the effectiveness of transmission and reception of messages. The functions of multimodal Internet text are considered, as well as the linguistic features of communication through the Internet, examples are given. While speech is the central code, non-verbal components also play an important role in the process of information transfer. The audiovisual component is a catalyst for the receiver's full perception of the broadcasted information. Multimodal linguistics is just emerging and is beginning to answer the question of the congruence of the functioning of all elements of Internet communication. Without a doubt, it is a necessary and important direction of modern linguistics, which studies the regularities of communication in the network. Some dialect words are shared among geographically distant groups of people without close interaction. Such a pattern may indicate the current or past presence of a cultural centre exerting a strong influence on peripheries. For example, concentric distributions of dialect variants in Japan may be explicable by repeated inventions of new variants at Kyoto, the ancient capital, with subsequent outward diffusion. Here we develop a model of linguistic diffusion within a population network to quantify the distribution of variants created at the central population. Equilibrium distributions of word ages are obtained for idealized networks and for a realistic network of Japanese prefectures. Our model successfully replicates the observed pattern, supporting the notion that a centre–periphery social structure underlies the emergence of concentric patterns. Unlike what has previously been claimed, our model indicates that a novelty bias in linguistic transmission is not always necessary to account for the concentric pattern, whereas some bias in the direction of transmission between populations is needed to be consistent with the observed absence of old words near the central population. Our analysis on the realistic network also suggests that the process of linguistic transmission was not much affected by between-prefecture differences in population size.

The relevance of studying the preservation of the Chechen language is driven by the growing influence of globalization, urbanization, and migration processes, which pose a threat to the linguistic and cultural heritage of the Chechen people. Given the rapid changes in the social environment and everyday life, there is a need for a thorough analysis of mechanisms that contribute to the preservation and transmission of the native language. In this context, the family emerges as a key institution playing a central role in maintaining linguistic identity and cultural traditions. Therefore, this article aims to identify and analyze the role of the family in the process of preserving the Chechen language. To achieve this goal, methods of qualitative analysis of family traditions, oral stories, and customs were used, as well as the observation method of everyday communication in the native language within the family. The article identifies key aspects that contribute to the preservation of the Chechen language in the family environment and analyzes contemporary challenges that may negatively impact its use. Special attention is given to strategies for strengthening the family’s role in maintaining linguistic identity and practical recommendations for raising children in a multilingual environment. The materials presented in the article highlight that the family plays a crucial role in maintaining the linguistic and cultural identity of the Chechen people. The developed recommendations and proposed strategies contribute to enhancing the family’s role in the process of language transmission and preservation of cultural traditions, which is of significant importance for the sustainability of the Chechen language amidst contemporary changes.

In this paper, the concept of studying the specifics of digital communication between the older (analogue) and younger (digital) generations in Russia is proposed. The process of communication opens up the possibility of a perception of communicative and cultural memory by the digital generation, which is in the process of socialization and awareness of cultural identity. We suggest methodological development and the testing of research methods into the transformation of communicative and cultural memory and ways of its transmission from the analogue to the digital generation of Russians. The proposed scientific and practical concept assumes the development of three basic directions. The first is related to the study of the general process of transformation of syncretic communicative and cultural memory in the digital environment. The second involves the study and modelling of media texts. Addressing the strategies of organizing multimedia narration and linguistic and statistical peculiarities of big data makes it possible to identify the language and conceptual markers of communicative and cultural memory in the texts of two different generations. Finally, the third one is related to the identification of the specifics of media consumption by generations, which implies the actualization of the transformation of journalistic competencies to work in the modern digital environment. These directions are developed using several approaches and methods: social-communication, cognitive, structural-semiotic, sociocultural, and linguistic. Such an interdisciplinary approach is necessary for the comprehensive study of intergenerational transmission of communicative and cultural memory.

The article reconsiders the process of teaching linguistic disciplines in the digital environment in the format of contemporary higher philological education. The paper focuses on discussing technological teaching methods that can also be applied in another study field. Based on their own extensive experience in conducting and evaluating the quality of education based on various web-tools, the authors provide a detailed analysis of advanced teaching practices in online and mixed formats, offer authentic methods of instructing students, assessing these methods in terms of current innovations in the technological educational sphere. The authors managed to demonstrate the effects of introducing “digital pedagogy” into the educational process. The term “digital” describes various aspects of information storage and transmission, communication processes between a teacher and students. The methodological principles of teaching related to the development and adaptation of teaching processes to the digital world are systematized. The disciplines of the linguistic cycle are interpreted as an illustrative practical example for the implementation of the basic principles of digital pedagogy. Innovative formats have been identified that provide personalized higher education. It is traced which effective traditional methods can be complemented by technical innovations. The paper analyzes effective ways of conducting online and remote assessment of the learning process and new knowledge of students. The grounds for the rational correlation of distance and mixed education, universal motives and cultural differences in the requirements for these types of education are revealed. The advantages and problems of using social networks and other media for online learning are described. The paper explores how the design of a specific linguistic course can facilitate an online seminar. The importance of not only student-teacher communication in such conditions is emphasized, but also ways to encourage student-peer communication. The article examines the ways advanced technologies can be used to support and expand the teaching of linguistics, as well as the specifics of organizing practical study of linguistics in remote work with students.

In this article we reconstruct the actuation and transmission of a phonological innovation known as prefix reduction within the Kikongo language cluster situated in the wider Lower Congo region of Central Africa. We argue that this change spread from a focal area coinciding with the heartland of the Kongo kingdom as a classical process of dialectal diffusion. Thanks to a unique Kikongo corpus that starts in the 17th century, we can provide diachronic empirical evidence for different phases of the process, which has been otherwise difficult, if not impossible, in Bantu historical linguistics. What is more, and also quite exceptional in African linguistics, we have fairly good insight into the ‘social ecology’ of this language change and argue that political centralization and economic integration within the realm of the Kongo kingdom facilitated such a contact-induced diffusion between closely-related language varieties.

From the 16th to the 18th century, Jesuit missionaries in China pioneered inter-cultural exchange by integrating cultural accommodation with groundbreaking linguistic research. By adopting Confucian scholarly practices and systematically studying the Chinese language, they developed innovative approaches to Chinese phonetics, grammar, lexicography, rhetoric, and teaching. Their linguistic achievements not only facilitated missionary work but also contributed to early modern sinology and cross-cultural communications. This paper examines the Jesuits’ dual strategy of cultural accommodation and linguistic research, demonstrating how their deep engagement with Chinese intellectual traditions enabled them to study the Chinese language successfully, to communicate with local elites smoothly, and to disseminate Christianity effectively. Through the combination of local philological traditions with Western linguistic techniques, they introduced new perspectives on the Chinese language, influencing both Western sinology and China’s linguistic development. Their translations of religious, scientific, and philosophical texts also played a key role in shaping Sino-Western intellectual exchanges. By analyzing the Jesuits’ linguistic activities and the strategies they employed in the process, this study highlights the Jesuits’ impact on Chinese linguistic scholarship, the transmission of Christianity, and their role in cross-cultural communication. Their work also exemplifies how language, culture, and religion can effectively collaborate in cross-cultural encounters, shaping historical narratives and fostering dialogue between civilizations.

In this paper, we show how the development of wh- interrogative clauses in Brazilian Portuguese was affected by an intense process of interlinguistic contact with African languages. Evidence in favor of this hypothesis comes from socio-historical and linguistic facts. Based on the concept of irregular linguistic transmission (Lucchesi; Baxter, 2009) and on some generative assumptions about how to derive wh- questions, our results help to build a broad picture of the diachronic evolution of Brazilian Portuguese. In fact, we reinforce the view that language contact may have been the trigger for the implementation of a series of distinctive characteristics of the contemporary vernacular spoken in Brazil, in contrast both to European Portuguese and older stages of the language.

The present study concerns on exploring how experiential meanings have been constructed through specific linguistic choices in Nadia Hashmi’s novel When the Moon Is Low. The main theoretical framework used for the clause analysis is transitivity model of systemic functional linguistics (SFL) through which the experiential meanings in the novel under study have been studied. The data comprises the novel, ‘When the Moon Is Low’ by Nadia Hashmi. Furthermore, the UAM corpus tool developed by O’Donnell (2009) has been used for the data analysis. The main focus of the research is to explore the transitivity patterns in the novel and explain the experiential meanings through transitivity analysis. Examining the language of a literary text can lead to a fuller understanding of the text and thus appreciation of the writer’s artistic achievement (Leech & Short, 2007). Accordingly, this study considers the relationship between linguistic structures and socially constructed meaning in a literary text. The results of the study reveal that there are total 77235 grammatical units. The results depict the highest frequency of participants is 23618 (30.57%). The processes are 21343 (27.63%), circumstances 13043 (16.88%) and configuration 19232 (24.89%). Among process types, material process has the highest frequency 11219 (63.58%). It shows that the author has portrayed the events of the novels by elaborating what is happening in the material world and what the characters are doing. By analysing When the Moon is Low through transitivity framework, process types in selected texts and their function has been found. Transitivity choices impart a significant role in the transmission of implicit meanings.

Translation is widely regarded as an art that involves retelling an author's story in an entirely different language while preserving the essence and meaning of the original text. The primary significance of translation lies in conveying words and expressions from one language to another without distorting the original meaning. Ideally, there should be minimal addition or omission during the translation process. Furthermore, the translated text should be both highly expressive and accurate. This study examines the extent of cultural and linguistic challenges in translation through a comparative analysis of V. J. James’s Nireeswaran (2014), a highly acclaimed Malayalam novel, and its English translation Nireeswaran (2022) by Ministhy S. The novel, noted for its rich cultural elements and literary significance, poses unique challenges in maintaining equivalence between the source and target texts. The study explores how effectively the translated text conveys the original’s cultural and contextual nuances by analysing translation strategies and the translator's techniques in overcoming linguistic gaps. This work aims to analyse the potential loss of meaning that occurs due to cultural and linguistic challenges through a comparative reading of V. J. James's Sahitya Akademi award-winning 320-page novel, Nireeswaran (2014, 582 pages in Kindle edition 2016) which has already undergone 22 editions, and its English translation Nireeswaran (2022) by Ministhy S. The author, V.J. James grew up in Changanacherry, Kerala, and worked at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre. This debut novel received the DC Silver Jubilee Award (1999), Malayattoor Prize and Rotary Literary Award. Nireeswaran also received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, Basheer Puraskaram and Vayalar Award.

This study examines language shifts within migrant communities, focusing on the social and cultural implications of adopting a new dominant language while maintaining heritage languages. It explores the impact of these dynamics on community cohesion, identity, and intergenerational communication. The paper also discusses the role of educational and social policies in supporting multilingualism and cultural diversity as assets in the integration process. This paper delves into the multifaceted dynamics of language shifts within migrant populations and examines their profound implications for social integration and cultural preservation. Migrant communities undergo a complex linguistic adaptation process influenced by various factors, including historical contexts, socio-economic conditions, and government policies. The phenomenon of language shift, wherein migrants gradually adopt the dominant language of the host country while potentially losing proficiency in their native language, represents a fundamental aspect of this adaptation process. This paper explores the nuanced interplay between linguistic assimilation and cultural retention among migrants, highlighting the intricate mechanisms through which language shapes their sense of belonging and cultural identity. Language is a gateway to social integration, facilitating interactions with the host society and enhancing access to employment, education, and public services. However, the pursuit of linguistic assimilation often entails challenges such as discrimination, linguistic barriers, and feelings of alienation, posing significant obstacles to migrants' integration efforts. Moreover, the erosion of native languages within migrant communities can engender a sense of loss and disconnection from cultural heritage, raising concerns about preserving linguistic diversity and intergenerational transmission of cultural knowledge. This paper examines the role of language policies and educational initiatives in shaping language dynamics within migrant communities. Government interventions, ranging from language proficiency requirements for citizenship to bilingual education programs, profoundly influence migrants' linguistic trajectories and cultural adaptation experiences. Sign languages make use of the two hands, facial features, the head, and the body to produce multifaceted gestures that are dedicated for linguistic functions. In a newly emerging sign language — Al-Sayyid Bedouin Sign Language — the appearance of dedicated gestures in signers of four age groups or strata reveals that recruitment of gesture for language is a gradual process. Starting with only the hands in Stratum I, each additional articulator is recruited to perform grammatical functions as the language matures, resulting in ever increasing grammatical complexity. The emergence of dedicated gesture in a new language provides a novel context for addressing questions about the relationship between the physical transmission system and grammar and about the emergence of linguistic complexity in human language generally.

The article reveals the peculiarities of transmission of stereotypical images of various cultures in the language of a native speaker. Through a comparative study of the material of languages with different structures (English, Russian and Kabardino-Circassian), the specificity of linguistic explication of ethnocultural stereotypes is analyzed. The analysis of language tools demonstrates that stereotype as an integral part of human thought processes and a conceptual picture of the world is inextricably linked with ethnic culture, acting as an accumulator of collective experience and a regulator of individual’s behavior, and language not only transmits stereotypes of national thinking and projects the human worldview, but also creates reality, forming corresponding images in the minds of communicants. The study of linguistic material of compared languages made it possible 1) to conclude that language reflects the specific perception of surrounding reality by representatives of different linguistic cultures, due to the national mentality; 2) to identify the peculiarities of national thinking in the process of stereotyping; and 3) to determine the function of stereotypes reflected in language in building a constructive intercultural dialogue. The target audience of the study may include university students following linguistic, ethnocultural programs, employees of educational and research institutions, as well as all interested in a comparative study of languages with different structures.

The article explores comic discourse as a multifaceted phenomenon that forms at the intersection of linguistic and cultural aspects. The main purpose of the work is to analyze the specifics of comic utterance in the context of various cultural realities and language systems. Special attention is paid to the influence of cultural peculiarities on the processes of creating and interpreting humor, as well as linguistic tools that ensure the transmission of a comic effect. The analysis of the humorous language is carried out, aimed at studying the mechanisms of the generation and perception of humor within the framework of linguistic and cultural contexts. The key factors determining the originality of a humorous utterance are identified, as well as the interrelationships between linguistic means and cultural features in the process of comic communication are investigated. The results of the study indicate that comic discourse acts as a reflection of cultural traditions and social norms, and also serves as a tool for analyzing the dynamics of intercultural interaction. It is established that the perception of humor is determined not only by linguistic norms, but also by cultural values, stereotypes and contexts in which communication is carried out. Thus, comic discourse is a significant object of study for understanding the interrelationships between language and culture.

The article examines the applicability of the cognitive heuristic translation model proposed by the Russian linguist A.G. Minchenkov in the process of the titles of French films localization of in the Russian-speaking linguistic and cultural space. An important role in the film title competent localization as a film discourse small-format text in another culture is devoted to the preservation or transformation of concepts functioning in the original film title. The subject of the study is the linguistic and cultural concepts that function in the film titles of French films. The main objectives of the study were to analyze the concepts functioning in the original film titles, to consider ways of their transmission in the process of French films titles localization in Russian linguistic culture, as well as the legality of certain localization techniques and methods. As a result of the analysis, we found that the most successful in the process of localization of the film's title (localized target text – LT) can be recognized as a variant in which the concept laid down by the authors when creating the original title (source text) is fully or partially preserved, which, in turn, makes it possible to best realize the localized film title pragmatic potential and the intertextual links of the film title with its genre component or its plot, thereby significantly increasing the box office of the film in another country.

Cultural evolution is a powerful process shaping behavioural phenotypes of many species including our own. Killer whales are one of the species with relatively well-studied vocal culture. Pods have distinct dialects comprising a mix of unique and shared call types; calves adopt the call repertoire of their matriline through social learning. We review different aspects of killer whale acoustic communication to provide insights into the cultural transmission and gene-culture co-evolution processes that produce the extreme diversity of group and population repertoires. We argue that the cultural evolution of killer whale calls is not a random process driven by steady error accumulation alone: temporal change occurs at different speeds in different components of killer whale repertoires, and constraints in call structure and horizontal transmission often degrade the phylogenetic signal. We discuss the implications from bird song and human linguistic studies, and propose several hypotheses of killer whale dialect evolution.

The article explores compression in English scientific and technical texts, defining it as the process of reducing linguistic elements without sacrificing essential information. Compression is a key feature of this genre, where high accuracy, conciseness, and informational density are paramount. Various linguistic levels of compression are analyzed: phonetic, morphological, lexical, and syntactic. At the phonetic level, compression is achieved through reduction, assimilation, dissimilation, elision, and accommodation, enhancing linguistic economy and speeding up information transmission. Morphologically, the main tools include univerbation, abbreviation, compounding, telescoping, and truncation, all of which reduce linguistic elements while preserving informativeness. Lexical compression employs abbreviations, acronyms, specialized terms, compounding, and borrowings, allowing clarity for specialists by eliminating unnecessary explanations. At the syntactic level, compression uses ellipsis, asyndetic constructions, infinitives, participial and gerundial constructions, and syntactic incompleteness to remove redundancies while maintaining semantic integrity. These techniques contribute to efficient language use and increase informational density, essential for conveying complex technical data. The article also outlines various methods for translating compressed syntactic structures, using examples from English scientific and technical texts in the field of aviation engineering. Compression in the translation of English scientific and technical texts into Ukrainian is examined.

This study explores the travels of a literary anecdote about ten pieces of advice that a mother gave her daughter on the eve of the latter’s marriage. Tracing the various incarnations of the anecdote from its first attestation in ninth-century Arabic works to later versions in Hebrew, Judeo-Arabic, Italian, Catalan, and Yiddish demonstrates the connectivity of the medieval Mediterranean and the porous nature of political, religious, and linguistic borders when it comes to popular ethical literary texts. Studying the changes introduced in each new incarnation allows us to explore the process of translation and adaptation involved in cultural transmission between different linguistic and religious communities. The travels of the anecdote also highlight the commonalities and differences in normative gender roles in different societies across the medieval Mediterranean.

Threats can trigger incidents in information systems (IS) causing damage or intangible material loss to assets. A good selection of safeguards is critical for reducing risks caused by threats. This paper deals with the selection of failure transmission, preventive and palliative safeguards that minimize the maximum risk of an IS for a specified budget. We assume that all the elements in the IS are valuated using a linguistic scale, which is capable of accounting for imprecision and/or vagueness concerning the inputs. Trapezoidal fuzzy numbers are associated with these linguistic terms, and risk analysis and management is consequently based on trapezoidal fuzzy number arithmetic. We model and solve the respective fuzzy optimization problem by means of the simulated annealing metaheuristic and give an example to illustrate the safeguard selection process.

We propose an evolutionary model for the emergence of shared linguistic convention in a population of agents whose social structure is modelled by complex networks. Through agent-based simulations, we show a process of convergence towards a common language, and explore how the topology of the underlying networks affects its dynamics. We find that small-world effects act to speed up convergence, but observe no effect of topology on the communicative efficiency of common languages. We further explore differences in agent learning, discriminating between scenarios in which new agents learn from their parents (vertical transmission) versus scenarios in which they learn from their neighbors (oblique transmission), finding that vertical transmission results in faster convergence and generally higher communicability. Optimal languages can be formed when parental learning is dominant, but a small amount of neighbor learning is included. As a last point, we illustrate an exclusion effect leading to core-periphery networks in an adaptive networks setting when agents attempt to reconnect towards better communicators in the population.

Introduction: Convergence of linguistics and semiotics materializes in the text not only the conceptual content that is expressed through codes, but the message also underlies the realism of the communicative intentions of the issuing agent in a specific context and the value of the interactions of the actors of the communicative act. Methodology: The vision of reality that is established in the collective imaginary must be analyzed from the interpretation of society and culture, the laws of operation and their constituent parts. For this, this research approached two newspapers of national circulation, five general radio channels of national coverage, and two television newscasts of private channels, and through the use of quantitative instruments, the posts, tweets or videos were reviewed in order to analyze the constituent elements of the discourse—text, images, hashtags, or keywords—which are appreciated from the syntactic and semantic perspectives (structural) and pragmatics (functional). Results: The communication process in its social context denotes the intervention of nonlinguistic elements of sociocultural order that demarcate the generation and interpretation of the meanings and senses of linguistic expressions. Discussion: The linguistic structure offers conditions for communication, but any generation and transmission of meanings is a product of the intention of the subjects who use it for specific purposes and in specific communicative situations within a social context. Conclusions: Intensive use of digital technology and social networks naturalized a relationship of proximity and familiarity in the communication process, satisfaction of needs in the multiplicity of information that is created and distributed in the network bundled to mobile devices and the political and social ecosystem of the nation.

AbstractRecently, a growing number of studies have considered the role of language in the social transmission of tool-making skill during human evolution. In this article, I address this question in light of a new theory of language and its evolution, and review evidence from anthropology and experimental archaeology related to it. I argue that the specific function of language—the instruction of imagination—is not necessary for the social transmission of tool-making skill. Evidence from hunter-gatherer ethnographies suggests that social learning relies mainly on observation, participation, play, and experimentation. Ethnographies of traditional stone cultures likewise describe group activities with simple, context-bound interactions embedded in the here and now. Experiments comparing gestural and verbal teaching of tool-making skills also demonstrate that language is not necessary for that process. I conclude that there is no convincing evidence that language played an important role in the social transmission of lithic technology, although the possibility that linguistic instruction was involved as part of the social interactions accompanying tool-making cannot be excluded.

In the so-called minimally verbal, a negligible degree of expressing communication behavior is diagnosed, which significantly reduces participation in interaction and reduces the effectiveness of communication. The minimal-verbal communication behaviors of preschool children in interaction are characterized by: sub-competence and transitional competence. With a shortage of linguistic resources, the child has specific communication behaviors, i.e. strategies that involve participation in interaction, the process of receiving and decoding meanings, and to a large extent the production and transmission of a message that is as understandable to the environment as possible. With limited language tools, children entering preschool education either withdraw from communicating or look for any possible means of interaction –both strategies can be observed in both natural and simulated pedagogical situations. The minimum verbosity of pre-school children does not exclude the possibility of interaction with other communication partners. The gradual transition from the level of sub-competency and transitional competence to a higher level requires early therapeutic and pedagogical activities, incentives to use achievement strategies more often, and to build bridges between communicative, linguistic and cultural competences. Without therapy, the strategies used may lead to fossilization, i.e. inhibit communication and the development of linguistic competence.

Language transmission, the passing on of language features such as words between people, is the process of inheritance that underlies linguistic evolution. To understand how language transmission works, we need a mechanistic understanding based on empirical evidence of lasting change of language usage. Here, we analysed 200 million online conversations to investigate transmission between individuals. We find that the frequency of word usage is inherited over conversations, rather than only the binary presence or absence of a word in a person's lexicon. We propose a mechanism for transmission whereby for each word someone encounters there is a chance they will use it more often. Using this mechanism, we measure that, for one word in around every hundred a person encounters, they will use that word more frequently. As more commonly used words are encountered more often, this means that it is the frequencies of words which are copied. Beyond this, our measurements indicate that this per-encounter mechanism is neutral and applies without any further distinction as to whether a word encountered in a conversation is commonly used or not. An important consequence of this is that frequencies of many words can be used in concert to observe and measure language transmission, and our results confirm this. These results indicate that our mechanism for transmission can be used to study language patterns and evolution within populations.

English’s status as the “lingua franca” of science has allowed for the expansion of science communication around the world. However, the remnants of the English educational system from British colonization have also furthered sociocultural disparities on the ground level in countries such as India, which is home to over a dozen national languages that are lost in the process of translating scientific concepts. Analyzing barriers in translating English-based science communication methods into vernacular Indian languages includes assessing linguistic feasibility, breaking down stigma apprehension surrounding topics such as HIV transmission and mental health, combatting the lack of institutional support, balancing time constraints, and understanding cultural context. In doing so, science professionals can embrace linguistic diversity while empowering the general public and promoting wider science accessibility during crucial times such as the current COVID-19 pandemic. Multilingual science approaches will not only be able to strengthen Indian citizens’ connection with science but also set the tone for broader global science communication efforts.

Amidst the deepening tide of globalization, cultural exchange emerges as a pivotal conduit knitting together disparate nations and peoples. The art of dubbing, serving as a significant modality of cultural dissemination, finds its role in intercultural communication increasingly conspicuous. Dubbing transcends mere linguistic conversion; it engenders the transmission and reshaping of cultures, constituting a process of cultural creation in its own right. Consequently, the exploration of intercultural principles in dubbing assumes paramount significance in fostering global cultural exchange. Against the backdrop of globalization, the dubbing of films faces unprecedented challenges and opportunities. On one hand, audiences from diverse cultural backgrounds exhibit varying degrees of comprehension and acceptance towards works, necessitating dubbing to not only ensure linguistic accuracy but also embrace cultural adaptability and innovation. On the other hand, with technological advancements and the application of innovative strategies, the methods and means of dubbing are in constant evolution, offering myriad possibilities for cross-cultural dissemination.

Abstract Olfaction, as a semiotic modality, receives relatively less attention than other sensory modalities. However, chemiosemiosis and semiochemicals are fundamental components of zoosemiosis, occurring across animal taxonomic groups. Indeed, olfaction is thought to be one of the most ancient sensory modalities from an evolutionary perspective and significantly, even unicellular organisms, such as the bacterium Escherichia coli, utilize a form of chemiosemiosis when foraging for nutrients, as part of a process known as ‘chemotaxis’. Further, many taxonomic groups have evolved to produce dedicated ‘semiochemicals’ (often known as pheromones or allomones) which have the sole purpose of being diffused into the environment as a social signal. In this paper, I highlight the importance of Umwelt theory when studying animal communication, by reviewing the less conspicuous and intuitive chemiosemiotic modality, across animal taxa. I then go on to discuss chemiosemiosis within a linguistic framework and argue that complex pattern recognition underpins linguistic theory. Thus, I explore the concept that chemiosemiosis has features in common with language, when the factor of time, in the transmission and decoding of a signal, is taken into account. Moreover, I provide discursive evidence in support of a unified theory of sensory perception, based on structural and functional aspects of signal transmission and cognitive complex pattern recognition. I conclude by proposing a chemosemiotic hypothesis of language evolution.

This study examines the process of alphabetic abbreviation and the extent of its application in some Persian scientific journals. The research data were gathered fromThe Pulse of Economy, Air Industry and Future Trademagazines and were analyzed by the analytical research method. Among the mentioned magazines, the Air Industry had the highest number of alphabetic abbreviations; Future Trade was in the second place and The Pulse of Economy was the third in rank. In this article, the use of alphabetic abbreviation was analyzed in Persian and English languages separately and it was determined that 99 percent of abbreviated words were used in English scientific journals whereas in Persian journals this number was only 1 percent. This indicates the high role of borrowing in Persian texts. An explanation for the higher use of abbreviated elements is the scientific genre, which indicates that message transmission in the least possible time period is the main characteristic of any human communication, especially scientific communication.

The article is written in the framework of cognitive linguistics, discourse analysis and frame theory. A frame is defined as a deep conceptual structure containing information about the world. The transmission of this information is achieved through language, such as words, sentences, texts. This process is known as frame activation. The relation between close notions of frame and concept is discussed. With the help of linguistic analysis of media texts there proposed a typology of six contextual macro frames constituting the media picture of a single city. The classification can be characterized as thematic. Our interest lies in the positioning of the city in the federal media which is the data for our study. It permits to outline a general city image among wide audience. In the course of our work, we compiled a specialpurpose corpus of 9,500 selected news texts from the past twenty years, which helped us to obtain a fairly consistent media picture. The research clarifies that the positioning of a city in the media represents an accentuated ideological communication with a hidden and not strong speech influence where framing is realized as a means of constructing the reality. Framing of social issues is carried out through a wide range of linguistic tools: lexical units with positive or negative connotations, set expressions, metaphors, epithets, syntactical constructions, various expressive and stylistic means. A frame conveys characteristics of a problem, possible reasons, predominant assessment and possible solutions. Framing of the urban social problems results in constructing certain meaning systems and images which are described in this paper. Apart from relevance for linguistics, frame analysis of urban environment is viewed as promising studies to improve journalism as a social institution.

Abstract The similarity between language and genetic information transmission processing has been recognized since molecular genetics was founded. Numerous attempts have been made to use linguistics techniques to decipher protein genes. The modest informational impact of various approaches to decoding the “protein language” was predictable: this type of technique is limited by the processes of encoding and at best helps compile a dictionary of units. However, this technique cannot describe a language and identify the semantic and textual structures that are decisive for communication. Thus, the functions of a large amount of non-coding DNA remain unclear. A text (but not a sign) should be regarded as an artefact of the creation, transmission, conservation and transformation of information. A general theory of text should be capable of describing linguistic texts and the process of their structuring, functioning and transformation. It should also be able to represent the biochemical structure of a genome as a hypertext that consists of an ordered subset of other texts. A text can be considered to be a quasi-organism that possesses memory, creative-cognitive characteristics and communicative force, and a cell can be considered as a quasi-intelligence capable of manipulating abstract semiotic entities. Such an approach requires the construction of a new, multimodal, and text-oriented version of semiotics (next-generation semiotics), in which text and context are the basic concepts and signs and meanings are considered to be context-dependent variables and, simultaneously, context-forming operators.

Two forms of pedagogical interaction are distinguished, respectively: communication, each of which is based on the model of “subject-subject relationship” as their generic commonality. It was revealed that pedagogical interaction in the form of communication presupposes the assignment of the functional and role positions of the participants. It is inserted that the teacher is assigned the functions of purposeful and systematic pedagogical influence, selection and arrangement of educational information, choice of methods and means of its transmission. The contact nature of pedagogical communication is emphasized, the main feature of which in the learning process is the establishment of special relationships between the teacher and the student, the essence of which is dialogue. It has been established that the concept of pedagogical linguistic and communicative competence appears to us in the form of a three-component model, which is based on the humanistic value disposition of the individual. It has been proven that effective forms of language and communication training are socio-psychological training, business games or simulation games, group discussion, seminars, selective components, pedagogical practice. It has been proven that the problem of developing communicative competence integrates three aspects: linguistic and communicative competence of the acquirers, pedagogical linguistic and communicative competence of the acquirer, linguistic and communicative competence of both the teacher and the student.

Tea drinking is a popular art all over the world. China and Sri Lanka are two leading tea- producing countries. Historically, China is considered the homeland of tea. Tea comes to Sri Lanka as an effect of colonization. China has a native heritage and Sri Lanka has a western influence on tea. In the process of learning and teaching Chinese as a foreign language, the topic of tea art can be considered culturally and linguistically very important. Linguists recognize cultural competence as a crucial factor. Cultural proficiency as an additional unit of language measurement has received the attention of scholars, so tea art can be identified as a separate subject area in language teaching. This study explores the development of the art of tea brewing, both in China and Sri Lanka, as a cultural heritage and its cultural value. Primary and secondary data related to the research are collected under qualitative research methodology. In this study, the beginning and development of the art of tea brewing in the two countries, transmission, current status, cultural value, linguistic value, differences in cultural and linguistic values, conclusions, etc. are discussed. This study concludes and highlights that the tea art of the two countries is a sign of linguistic and cultural development.

The transmission of meaning is the main purpose of the language or the unique communication tool. Each single linguistic sign contains a conventional meaning. Perception of meaning is achieved by listening to any utterance or sentence uttered by the speaker in speech and by reading a sentence in reading. The theory of Sphoṭa that was enhanced by Bhartruhari in Vākyapadīya can be identified as the ideal oriental linguistic theory which elaborates the process of perceiving the meaning of a sentence. In this process, the whole sentence is heard and considered rather than its individual elements. The main purpose of this paper which is based on the research problem of “how the meaning of a sentence is perceived” is to explore the semantical process of the perception of sentencial meaning, with reference to the theoretical interpretation of Sphoṭa. In order to investigate the research problem, data analysis of literary sources was carried out following the qualitative research methodology. Through the critical analysis of facts, it was possible to conclude that the Sphoṭa theory reflected in the ancient oriental semantic analysis is ideal and ubiquitous; in terms of that, the meaning of a sentence is perceived not by the individual elements but by listening to the whole sentence, and the Sphoṭa is the concluded feeling or the entire sense which is generated in mind after hearing the entire sentence or utterance.

Implementation of the process of speaking is impossible without communication, that is, the sequence of transmission and reception of information. Approximately half of the doctor's working time is spent on meetings, telephone conversations, communication with patients and colleagues. The ability to speak is his professional duty. A doctor, who knows how to speak creates the impression of an expert in his field, inspires trust in patients, which is a guarantee of successful treatment results.
A high level of development of professional communication skills will largely determine the effectiveness of a doctor's work, his ability to logically and reasonably express his opinions, establish relationships with colleagues, and create a positive social and psychological microclimate in the team. At the same time, mistakes made in professional communication can hinder the effective performance of a doctor's duties and negatively affect his career. The basis of conflicts that reduce the creative potential of medical personnel is a low level of communicative competence caused by the lack of knowledge about communication and the corresponding communicative skills.
The main goal of this work is a comprehensive consideration of the linguistic and communicative aspect of the professional communication of doctors. The methods of work involve the study of the mentioned phenomenon of linguistic and communicative skills of doctors, systematization, and correction of the acquired knowledge.

The role of the teacher of Polish as a second language in language and cultural education. The article discusses the specifics of teaching Polish as a second language in school, based on previous findings in Polish language glottodidactics, to provide recommendations for the role of the teacher, taking into account the language and cultural dimensions of education. The teacher working with students with very different migration experiences, with various levels of knowledge of the Polish language and different motivations, must individualise the teaching process, which in turn requires a high level of pedagogical reflexivity. The authors begin with terminological explanations and considerations of the specificity of Polish as a second language in the context of school teaching. Next, they discuss the characteristic features and diversity of students having experienced migration, as well as, analyse the relationship between language teaching, cultural education and the transmission of culture to outline the necessary competencies and the role of the teacher of Polish as a second language. In summary, linguistic and cultural education is treated as part of the student’s integration process with the school community and not only. Keywords: integration; linguistic and cultural education; students with migration experience; teaching Polish as a second language; the role of a Polish language teacher.

Abstract This paper discusses language use and identity patterns in families set up by deaf partners living in Romania, where at least one of the spouses belongs to the ethnic Hungarian minority. Language use and transmission of identity to children in ethnically homogenous (Hungarian) or heterogeneous (Hungarian–Romanian) families of deaf are explored. The research is based on a survey conducted among members of the ethnic Hungarian Deaf community (including ethnic Romanian spouses), life-path interviews with selected deaf persons and interviews with special school educators. The research results denote that in the case of deaf people living in ethnically homogeneous marriages who graduated from Hungarian language special school the transmission of Hungarian identity, Hungarian sign language/oral language knowledge—combined with the components of Deaf culture—tends to be a natural and usually undisturbed process. However, if one of the spouses is Romanian, the language of communication within the family will probably be the Romanian sign language/oral language. On the other hand, in the families where ethnic minority and ethnic majority family members are present, with typical and atypical hearing, complex, multifaceted linguistic communication models might prevail, favoring specific multicultural modes of intrafamilial identity development and transmission.

In their search for answers to the relevant theoretical questions on importing knowledge in practical ethics, the authors take an instrumental approach to metaphor. This figure of language allows one to compare language and linguistic variants to bioethics and knowledge. As defined by the dictionary, an 'idiom' is the official language of a nation, a 'dialect' is a regional variant of an idiom, and an 'idiolect' is an individual variant of a dialect. The bioethical idiom is thus seen as a linguistic set constituting a 'bioethical nation'. Since it is situated above particular dialects, it exercises more than a regulatory role over the discipline. In this article, in order to focus on the process of transmission of knowledge in bioethics, the authors chose Diego Gracia's work as a paradigmatic reference to the question on the transculturation of dialects and the relations in bioethics which are considered 'peripheral' or 'central'. Although this researcher found the key question pointing to the core of the problem of importing dialects, he is still searching for a proper answer to the cultural/bioethical context/contradiction

Current scholarship on the history of the Hebrew Bible text sees the composition of biblical literature as a long, drawn-out scribal process of rewriting, to which many individuals contributed. This approach is in harmony with the evidence for variability in the scribal transmission of distinctive (less common) linguistic features in non-MT biblical manuscripts and parallel passages in the MT. The Text-Critical paradigm contrasts with the MT-Only paradigm which presupposes the composition of biblical books or identifiable parts of them by single authors at specific dates. This article focuses on the unusually well-attested text MT 2 Kings 25:1–12// LXX 2 Kings 25:1–12// MT Jeremiah 39:1–10// LXX Jeremiah 39:1–10// MT Jeremiah 52:4–16// LXX Jeremiah 52:4–16 where it is discovered that not a single distinctive linguistic feature is shared by all texts. It concludes with suggestions as to how the application of this approach can help reformulate some of the questions scholars ask in their study of ancient Hebrew.

With the requirements of New English Curriculum Standards, English teaching has shifted towards organising content thematically, focusing not only on the transmission of linguistic knowledge but also on the improvement of students’ comprehensive quality during language learning. This evolution undoubtedly raises higher demands on English instruction. Unit-based integrated teaching, as an innovative pedagogical model, is characterised by its holistic, interconnected, progressive, and comprehensive features. It can help students to build a correlated knowledge network facilitates the establishment of connections between disparate pieces of knowledge, deepens students’ understanding and enhances their retention, improves their overall linguistic competence and learning ability, so as to foster the comprehensive development of core literacy. Therefore, this article takes the teaching of English in compulsory education as an example, and explores and elaborates on the design and implementation path of integrated teaching of English units under the new curriculum standards from four aspects: teaching objectives, teaching content, teaching process, and teaching evaluation, in order to provide reference for promoting integrated teaching of English units in compulsory education.
