This article analysed the 25–30 years of growth of dipterocarps forests that were logged under the Selective Management System (SMS) at three sites in Peninsular Malaysia to understand how management regimes affected forest stem density and basal area. The management regimes were (1) unlogged, (2) moderately logged forests that logged all dipterocarps ≥ 65 cm diameter at breast height (dbh) and all non-dipterocarps ≥ 60 cm dbh, and (3) intensely logged forests that logged all dipterocarps ≥ 50 cm dbh and non-dipterocarps ≥ 45 cm dbh. Abstract Based on the reality of production forest management so far, logged-over forest improvement activities generally have received less attention, giving rise to the notion that the management of logged-over areas is not being taken seriously. In general, regeneration and maintenance of remaining stands as a component of the silvicultural system has not been carried out. Silviculturists must address these developments and respond to rapidly changing expectations and global paradigm shifts in how forests are viewed. Tropical forests are a major reservoir of biodiversity and carbon (C), playing a pivotal role in global ecosystem function and climate regulation. However, most tropical forests, especially Borneo's forests in Southeast Asia, are under intense pressure and threatened by human activities such as logging, mining, agriculture and conversion to industrial plantations. Selective logging is known to reduce both above- and below-ground biomass by removing selected large trees, while increasing deadwood stocks through collateral logging damage and creating large gaps in the canopy. Nectar in tall forest canopies is a significant, but poorly quantified, resource for Australian fauna, as well as the European Honeybee Apis mellifera. We investigated the impact of logging on nectar production in the canopy of Grey Ironbark Eucalyptus paniculata (Smith) forests in southern Australia. Using cherry-pickers and cranes we measured nectar production in large and small trees in replicate sites in each of recently logged, young regrowth and old regrowth forest over three consecutive years (2004?2006). We studied the response of beaver (Castor canadensis Kuhl), moose (Alces alces L.), and snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus Erxl.) to clear-cutting in three blocks that had been logged 10 years ago. In a previous study, these species had been surveyed in the same blocks 2 years before and 2 years after logging. We also surveyed an uncut block of the initial experimental design that was logged more recently. Abstract Selective logging is an extensive land use in the Brazilian Amazon region. The soil–atmosphere fluxes of nitrous oxide (N2O), nitric oxide (NO), methane (CH4), and carbon dioxide (CO2) are studied on two soil types (clay Oxisol and sandy loam Ultisol) over two years (2000–01) in both undisturbed forest and forest recently logged using reduced impact forest management in the Tapajos National Forest, near Santarem, Para, Brazil. In undisturbed forest, annual soil–atmosphere fluxes of N2O (mean ± standard error) were 7.9 ± 0.7 and 7.0 ± 0.6 ng N cm−2 h−1 for the Oxisol and 1.7 ± 0.1 and

Logging history and population structure of the dry forest tree species Guaiacum coulteri are described for Oaxaca, Mexico. We propose that the species has been adversely affected by selective logging, with large individuals now being uncommon. We argue that the species is likely to have undergone similar changes elsewhere in its range and, following IUCN guidelines, propose that it is categorized as Endangered. Maintenance of G. coulteri as an understorey shrub may be possible given current land use practices in the area but recovery of populations of large individuals may be more difficult.
