This master thesis addresses the issue of inter-plants transfers. Although used as a strategy to increase products availability, manage unanticipated stock-outs, and improve service levels, inter-plant transfers tend to become a burden on companies when inventory management is inefficient and decentralized. Indeed, they generate important costs and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, they must be optimized. In collaboration with an industrial partner in the agricultural sector, this project aims to optimize costs and emissions linked to inter-plant transfers. In order to achieve that, we model and solve an inventory transshipment problem in which the objective function minimises total costs consisting of transshipment, distribution, inventory, and renting costs. Our results show that significant gains can be achieved through centralized inventory management and integration. We observe savings between 36.86% and 99.92% for transshipment costs, 41.33% and 99.98% for emissions linked to transfers, and 0.56% and 92.48% for the total cost. This document is organized as follows. First, a general introduction is presented. Then, data are analyzed in Chapter 1. The optimization problem is solved in Chapter 2. Finally, our conclusions and directions for future work are presented.

The forest industry represents an important part of Quebec’s economic activity and many local communities depend on this sector. In natural forests, the great diversity of tree species and quality brings an added complexity for sorting operations and the flow of resources. Furthermore, the remoteness of the resource implies high transportation costs. Scientific literature demonstrates that sharing transportation capacity can result in important cost reductions (Epstein et al. 2007), but is quite complex to put into place (Frisk et al.2010). Finally, the transition from push systems towards pull type supply chains and the recent difficulties for this industry (decline of the pulp and paper sector, housing crisis of 2008-09, etc.) make it all the more relevant to examine how to better use the wood resource. In this regard, the creation of sort yards, distinct from both the harvesting sites and the mills, offers many opportunities for maximizing value and minimizing costs. Such centers however, represent an important challenge in regards to their daily management and their insertion in the pre-existing logistics network. We therefore hypothesize that for certain economic, logistical and environmental factors, a logistics center comprised of a sort yard and transportation coordination, could generate cost savings, especially through the use of oversize trucks (Chan et al. 2008) and lower sorting costs (as can be deduced from Favreau 1995). We also sense that the sorting activities performed in such a center would also procure an added economic value for companies using its services by limiting the error rate in the classification of the logs, as presented in Sessions (2005). The purpose of this thesis is therefore to identify key factors regarding their impact on the profitability of a regional forest logistics center, combining a specific sort yard and the use of backhauling. Following this, we consider these factors in the development of a profit maximization model for a forest logistics network with the option of using such a sort yard and/or backhauling. This model was first applied to a fictitious but realistic case using generated data in order to estimate the magnitude of potential profit improvements which reached up to $ 0.88 per m3 available for harvest. The model was then applied to optimize a real and complex network to analyze its performance as well as slightly modified versions. A sensitivity analysis was also conducted and revealed that many factors such as distances from the harvesting zones, the number of oversize trucks and the level of stumpage fees had a significant influence on the profitability of such a center. In addition, a dynamic effect between the operation of the yard and the use of backhauling was observed for the real case. The addition of a sort yard allows to reduce the average length of delivery routes by breaking in two the flow of material between the harvesting areas and the production mills. This makes it easier to fit delivery routes within the legal driving time limit. Most importantly, such a yard can serve both as an origin and a destination, therefore opening the door to important reductions in deadheading.

This thesis aims to define and quantify the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission emitted by our industrial partner’s logistics transportation network. Next to that, we detail several possible optimization scenarios in order to reduce its carbon footprint. This is done via mathematical optimization, in which the trips between the company and its various partners, from supply to delivery to the end customer, for different types of products and different carriers with different types of vehicles are considered. More specifically, our purpose is to describe and represent the difference between the current situation and the solution obtained by optimizing the network in terms of distance traveled, GHG emitted, consolidation of deliveries as well as production and stock needed. Following the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the results, we are able to provide numerous suggestions for improvements to the company with regard to the management of its internal and external transport. A number of key performance indicators are also evaluated, most importantly inventory and the number of trips. These are drastically reduced in our optimized scenario. To ensure optimal business results, we propose a two-step resolution model that includes mathematical modeling of the problem followed by manual improvement of the solution. In addition, the calculation methods used to measure GHGs emitted are based on the distance traveled as well as the capacity used of each vehicle, thus assigning vehicle usage to the company (while the remaining vehicle space is to be used by other companies when the carrier consolidates its operation). This allows us to estimate the emissions generated even when the construction of routes of different carriers is not exactly known. The coordination, consolidation and synchronization of the various trips related to the company’s activities allowed us to reduce the GHGs emitted by up to 23%, which translates into 3,438.64 tons of CO2e saved on a yearly basis, or 2,733,354 km. In addition, our observations of the results highlighted a multitude of recommendations regarding the use of carriers, the reduction of inventory and the control of transport flows within the company.

Planning for timber supply in Quebec's public forests represents a complex case of a divergent supply chain (Alayet and al., 2015). The customers of this chain can be numerous. They participate in planning by interacting with the Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks (MFFP) which is the supplier of the plans. Customers also interact with each other to coordinate activities leading to the delivery of different products from a stand or tree to different factories. In general and more particularly in the context under study, alignment of objectives and capacities of stakeholders participating in planning is one of the main factors of success in the supply chain (Lee, 2004; Gunn, 2005; Simatupang and Sridharan, 2005; Fawcett and al., 2008; Cao and Zhang, 2013, Wong and al., 2012). Alignment represents the fit, in terms of objectives, structures and processes internally and between the different functions and stakeholders of a supply chain (Wong and al., 2012). In Quebec, potential timber supply and harvested timber show a historical inadequacy, with 30 % or more of the total annual allowable cut of the public forest not being harvested. In addition, the management strategies leading to the allowable cut calculations take little or no account of the economic aspects, which results in dissatisfaction of industrial customers with the value generated by the supply plans. Finally, planning stakeholders express dissatisfaction with the planning process and the value of plans (Gharbi, 2014). The first part of this research, which consists of a descriptive case study, aims to verify if there is a lack of alignment by studying the current planning process and its alignment mechanisms. The process is compared to a conceptual reference framework developed from theoretical concepts collected in the literature and from the main components of the Supply Chain Council's Supply Chain Organizational Reference model (SCOR). Surveys and interviews with forest planners helped to map, describe and interpret the process, and establish concordances and disagreements with the conceptual framework. Although several sub-processes are comprehensively defined by the MFFP, the study shows that the organization of the planning process is not clearly defined. Roles, responsibilities and tasks are broken down and executed in silos rather than fostering the integration of stakeholder capacities. The hierarchical breakdown of planning does not conform to scientific conventions, leading to inconsistencies between planning levels and difficulties in understanding and communicating among stakeholders. The production and supply objectives are not sufficiently clear and defined. Finally, the use of indicators and dashboards is not widespread, which does not facilitate collaboration, adaptation and adjustment. Thus, the feedback and performance measurement mechanisms are deficient. This research allowed us to verify that there is a lack of alignment and identify the main factors involved. The second part of this research aims to propose and test a strategic level planning process focused on the alignment of objectives and planning capacities for woody material supplies from the principles of the conceptual framework adopted. A project was carried out in action research mode. Planning stakeholders were invited to participate in the development of a Regional Timber Production Strategy (SRPB). They were offered a process that put forward principles for aligning objectives and capacities. This approach demonstrates that it is possible to increase stakeholder satisfaction with the planning process by promoting alignment of goals and capabilities, which answers the research question. Although the project (SRPB) only addresses the strategic level of planning woody material supplies in Quebec public forests, we believe that the results of this research, specifically the conceptual framework supporting the configuration of a process, are transferable at the tactical and operational planning scales as well as in other regional contexts in Quebec and elsewhere. We also believe that these findings may inspire approaches to configuring systems and planning processes in other areas where supply planning involves multiple stakeholders. This research project contributes to filling the gap noted in the literature concerning the field of alignment of objectives and capacities in the planning process of the woody material supply.

How do organizations working in a simultaneously complex, competitive and turbulent environment manage risk ? Most traders buy and sell over a hundred million dollars daily, and there arc more than one hundred operators on a dealing floor. This empirical study draws over three years of participant observation in a trading room and forty interview in Paris, London and Hong Kong. There are three main contributions to this research : 1. The development of concepts guiding the understanding of the unique phenomenon of dealing rooms : the position, the correlation of financial instruments and the desk as a combination of a trading strategy and a product. 2. The building of a model guiding the understanding of organizations. This model is based on three fundamental forms: the hierarchy, the market and the network. We redefine them as ideal types through regulation, coordination and adaptation. 3. These ideal types allow for an analytical charting encompassing risk-management strategies. This makes it possible to draw up a falsifiable hypothesis: are trading rooms plural organizations ? We show the relevance of our ideal types and of their complex interactions. Chinese walls and product lines are explained as an application of this approach. Some distinctive features of dealing rooms are also explained : their perpetual state of transformation and their distinctiveness from other forms of organization. Facing a "crisis of the understanding of organizations", we suggest a new approach to risk- management and bring a contribution to the question of the "nature of the firm". Parallels with other organizations - in simultaneous engineering, control towers and news agencies - are suggested. Teaching of our research also bear on the inadequacy of risk-control strategies in use and suggest ways of improvement

Supply chain management literature is linked with strong relationship modifications amongst supply chain organizations. Multimodal logistic platforms are considered as local and inter-organizational activities playing the role of interface between stakeholders. Within strategy and supply chain management literature, multimodal logistic platforms appear like unavoidable nodes for territories and organizations competitiveness. From that perspective, we attempt to understand the reality of the articulation between organizational architecture of a multimodal logistic platform and its ex-ante competitiveness. In order to apprehend this reality, our work is based on an exploratory qualitative process. The study uses an illustrative case methodology. The empirical perimeter is composed by stakeholder organizations contributing to the competitiveness of Marseille harbor. The results of our study aim at improving our understanding of harbor logistic networks
